Electromechanical delay (EMD) values were obtained using a cross-correlation technique for a series of 14 repetitive submaximal dynamic isometric contractions of the vastus lateralis performed by five subjects. To avoid a phase lag, which is introduced with one-way filtering, the EMG was processed with a bi-directional application of a second-order Butterworth filter. A mean EMD value of 86 ms (SD = 5.1 ms) was found. Moreover, contraction and relaxation delays were computed and compared. There was a significant difference between the contraction and relaxation delays (P less than 0.005). The mean contraction delay was 81.9 ms and the mean relaxation delay was 88.8 ms. Despite this significant difference, the computed contraction and relaxation delay values lie in the same range as the total phase lag, calculated with the cross-correlation technique. The magnitude of EMD values found supports the need to account for this delay when interpreting temporal aspects of patterns of intermuscular coordination.  相似文献

Given the existence of powerful multiprocessor client workstations in many client-server object database applications, the performance bottleneck is the delay in transferring pages from the server to the client. We present a prefetching technique that can avoid this delay, especially where the client application requests pages from several database servers. This technique has been added to the EXODUS storage manager. Part of the novelty of this approach lies in the way that multithreading on the client workstation is exploited, in particular for activities such as prefetching and flushing dirty pages to the server. Using our own complex object benchmark, we analyze the performance of the prefetching technique with multiple clients and multiple servers. The technique is also tested under a variety of client host workload levels. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

This paper applies the anatomic concepts and data obtained from our animal experimental studies of the delay phenomenon to a series of clinical cases. Similar clinical results were obtained to those seen in Part I of our study when skin flaps were raised with and without a delay, when a tissue expander was used, and when the delay technique was extended to musculocutaneous flaps. In each instance, the cutaneous perforators were identified with the Doppler probe to facilitate the delay of specific vessels rather than dividing those at random. Intraoperative arteriograms and venograms reveal that the choke arteries dilate and the anatomically unfavorable valved vein segments become regurgitant. The end result is the observation that at least one additional anatomic vascular territory can be added to the length of a flap with safety following a surgical delay.  相似文献

The technique of vascular delay has been used by plastic surgeons for nearly 500 years and has proven useful for reliably transferring tissue and allowing for a greater volume of tissue to be reliably harvested. Delay procedures are an essential plastic surgical tool for a variety of aesthetic and reconstructive procedures. Despite the widespread use of vascular delay procedures, the mechanism by which this phenomenon occurs remains unclear. A number of groups have exhaustively examined microvascular changes that occur during vascular delay. Theories have been proposed ranging from the dilation of choke vessels to changes in metabolism and new blood vessel formation. Inherent in these theories is the concept that ischemia is able to act as the primary stimulus for vascular changes. The purpose of this review is to revisit the theories proposed to underlie the delay phenomenon in light of recent advances in vascular biology. In particular, the participation of bone marrow-derived endothelial progenitor cells in the delay phenomenon is explored. Greater understanding of the role these cells play in new blood vessel formation will be of considerable clinical benefit to high-risk patients in future applications of delay procedures.  相似文献

A technique of continuous filtration of T4-infected Escherichia coli has been devised to study the phenomenon of lysis inhibition. Studies using this technique revealed that the length of the lysis delay caused by superinfection can attain only certain discrete values, which for low average multiplicity of superinfection is thought to be a reflection of the actual number of superinfecting particles per cell. The time interval between primary and superinfection had little effect on the length of lysis delay. With increasing rate of superinfection, the length of lysis delay decreased. In superinfected cells, the concentration of endolysin exceeded the final concentration in nonsuperinfected cells. Superinfection of a lysing culture induced lysis inhibition immediately. Temperature-shift experiments, with cells primarily infected by a temperature-sensitive endolysin mutant, revealed that after the normal latent period superinfection was unable to induce lysis inhibition. Amber-restrictive cells, which were primarily infected by an endolysin negative amber mutant, released adenosine triphosphate (ATP) at the end of the normal latent period although lysis did not occur. Superinfection reduced the loss of ATP markedly. The hypothetical role of the cytoplasmic membrane in lysis inhibition is discussed.  相似文献

The effect of a time delay on the local stability of a host-parasitoid model is analyzed. The delay is between the time of parasitization of the host and the emergence of the parasitoid from the host. Both analytic methods and computer simulations are used in this study. By linearizing and transforming the original equations, sufficient conditions for the local stability are found. In the case of the parameters considered, the results illustrate the destabilizing effect of the time delay. As the lag increases the number of stable points decreases and the points become more scattered in the parameter space. Simulations of the original model are also produced. The region of stability indicated by the simulations is greater than that predicted by the use of the analytic technique. The analysis also reveals the impact of the population parameters upon the stability of the time delay model.The importance of understanding time lags is discussed with reference to population regulation.  相似文献

A technique, using radioactively-tagged microspheres to measure the blood flow in delayed axial pattern flaps in the pig, is presented. The blood flow was significantly (p less than 0.01) increased in the delayed portion of these flaps, reaching maximal levels after 4 to 12 days of delay. Also, the blood flow to these flaps correlated with tissue survival during the first week after the delay (p less than 0.001).  相似文献

We describe a technique for monitoring the kinetics of sickle cell hemoglobin gelation by observing the change in the amplitude and linewidth of the water proton magnetic resonance. The resulting kinetic progress curves are very similar to those obtained by optical birefringence and turbidity methods. The curves consist of a delay, followed by a rapidly accelerating signal change which terminates quickly. From a study of the temperature dependence of the delay time, it is shown that all three techniques see the onset of gelation simultaneously. The origin of the change in physical properties upon gelation is briefly discussed in relation to the component steps of the reaction.  相似文献

A technique for the implantation of a pH electrode into the stomach of the toad, Bufo marinus, is described. The technique permits continuous monitoring of gastric pH for extended periods. Results from continuous monitoring and from acute measurements of gastric pH are compared in fasting and fed toads. Prostaglandin E, given orally with food, caused a dose-related delay in the fall of gastric pH which followed feeding.  相似文献

Preoperative selective embolization of the deep inferior epigastric arteries constitutes a new technique in TRAM flap delay. Whereas surgical ligation of these vessels has proved to be an effective delay procedure in experimental and clinical settings, it requires an additional operative step under general anesthesia. Despite the introduction of the free TRAM leading to improved flap perfusion, this microsurgical technique is not always available because of the requirements of specialized equipment and staff, longer operating hours, and subsequently higher expenses. The search for a minimally invasive, easy, and inexpensive technique to improve perfusion of the pedicled TRAM flap led us to selective embolization of the deep inferior epigastric arteries by an angiographic procedure. After 4 years of experience with this technique, we now present the first clinical results. Breast reconstruction by a delayed pedicled TRAM flap was performed in 40 patients with a mean age of 48.4 years (range, 31 to 66 years). The mean interval between embolization and surgery was 3.6 months. Postoperative data concerning flap survival and complications were available for all patients. Embolization of the deep inferior epigastric arteries was performed bilaterally in 35 patients (87.5 percent) and unilaterally in 5 patients (12.5 percent). Radiotherapy had been applied in 21 patients (52.5 percent) before surgery. Postoperative flap complications consisted of partial necrosis in three (7.5 percent), fat necrosis in one (2.5 percent), impaired wound healing in five (12.5 percent), and postoperative bleeding in two patients (5 percent). Abdominal wound healing complications occurred in six patients (15 percent), abdominal wall weakness in eight (20 percent), and hernia formation in four (10 percent). Surgical corrections were performed at the breast (TRAM flap) in 22 patients (55 percent) and at the abdomen (donor site) in 9 (22.5 percent). Preoperative selective embolization of the deep inferior epigastric arteries constitutes an alternative delay procedure for the pedicled TRAM flap. It is superior to the conventional procedure without delay, offers several advantages compared with surgical ligation of these vessels, and represents an alternative to the free TRAM flap in selected cases.  相似文献

The technique of percentage labeled mitoses was used to compare radiation-induced division delay in 9L rat gliosarcoma cells growing as spheroids or as exponential monolayers. The length of delay induced by each of five X-ray doses was determined as the difference between control and irradiated cultures in the time required to reach the half-height of the first peak of labeled mitoses. Spheroid cells were delayed significantly longer than monolayer cells; the slopes of the dose responses were 32 and 13 min/Gy, respectively. Cells in small spheroids (150 micron diameter) were delayed to the same extent as cells in large spheroids (800 micron diameter). Like the contact effect previously observed as enhanced radiation survival of cells grown as spheroids, the increased radiation-induced delay may be a consequence of the growth of cells in three-dimensional contact.  相似文献

Unit activity in the dorsolateral regions of the prefrontal cortex (s. principalis) of the monkey was analysed by multineuronal recording technique. The sequence during delayed-response alternation included anticipatory stimulus, non-specific expectancy, conditioned cue, delay, trigger stimulus and alternation performance. Food reward completed the sequence. Unit activity in s. principalis was found to be involved in such learning processes as integration of behavioural acts into an accomplished programme and storage of traces in short-term memory. The latter can be observed in successive involvement of neuronal populations during a 10 sec delay as well as in rearrangements of unit activity, the maximum of which shifts to the latest part of the delay period. Unit activity in s. principalis reflects the level of correct response, corresponding correlates of which depend on the level of attention. The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex has structural and functional characteristics for short-term storage of external signals in its neuronal nets according to the level of attention.  相似文献

Skin capillary blood flow and angiogenesis were studied by radioactive microsphere and morphometry technique, respectively, in delayed random skin flaps in the pig. Skin flaps were delayed for 2, 3, 4, 6, or 14 days. Blood flow was measured 6 hours after complete raising of acute and delayed random skin flaps on the opposite flanks of the same pig. It was observed that the capillary blood flow increased significantly (p less than 0.05) within 2 days of delay compared to the acute skin flaps. This capillary blood flow further increased by about 100 percent between days 2 and 3, started to plateau after day 3, and remained unchanged between days 4 and 14 of delay. This increase in capillary blood flow was mainly in the distal portion of the delayed skin flaps. There was no indication of an increase in the density of arteries in all delay periods studied. Our observations did not support the hypotheses that the delay phenomenon involves angiogenesis or long-term adaptation to ischemia, as have been hypothesized previously. The possible mechanism of delay is discussed.  相似文献

Smart grid (SG) application is being used nowadays to meet the demand of increasing power consumption. SG application is considered as a perfect solution for combining renewable energy resources and electrical grid by means of creating a bidirectional communication channel between the two systems. In this paper, three SG applications applicable to renewable energy system, namely, distribution automation (DA), distributed energy system-storage (DER) and electrical vehicle (EV), are investigated in order to study their suitability in Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. To compensate the weakness in the existing scheduling algorithms, a novel bandwidth estimation and allocation technique and a new scheduling algorithm are proposed. The technique allocates available network resources based on application’s priority, whereas the algorithm makes scheduling decision based on dynamic weighting factors of multi-criteria to satisfy the demands (delay, past average throughput and instantaneous transmission rate) of quality of service. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed mechanism achieves higher throughput, lower delay and lower packet loss rate for DA and DER as well as provide a degree of service for EV. In terms of fairness, the proposed algorithm shows 3%, 7 % and 9% better performance compared to exponential rule (EXP-Rule), modified-largest weighted delay first (M-LWDF) and exponential/PF (EXP/PF), respectively.  相似文献

A dynamic end-tidal forcing technique for producing step changes in end-tidal CO2 with end-tidal O2 held constant independent of the ventilation response or the mixed venous return is introduced for characterizing the human ventilation response to end-tidal CO2 step changes for both normoxic (PAO2 = 125 Torr) and hypoxic (PAO2 = 60 Torr) conditions. The ventilation response approaches a steady state within 5 min. In normoxia, the on-transient is faster than the off-transient, presumably reflecting the action of cerebral blood flow. The hypoxic step response is faster than the normoxic response presumably reflecting the increased contribution from the carotid body. The delay in the ventilation response after the change in end-tidal CO2 is less in hypoxia than in normoxia and reflects the action of a transport delay and that of a virtual delay. These delays are interpreted with respect to the high-frequency phase shift data for the same subject, generated using sinusoidal end-tidal forcing. The methods of others for experiments utilizing step changes in inspired CO2 are considered with respect to our methods.  相似文献

The delay procedure is known to augment pedicled skin or muscle flap survival. In this study, we set out to investigate the effectiveness of vascular delay in two rabbit muscle flap models. In each of the muscle flap models, a delay procedure was carried out on one side of each rabbit (n = 20), and the contralateral muscle was the control. In the latissimus dorsi flap model, two perforators of the posterior intercostal vessels were ligated. In the biceps femoris flap model, a dominant vascular pedicle from the popliteal artery was ligated. After the 7-day delay period, the bilateral latissimus dorsi flaps (based on the thoracodorsal vessels) and the bilateral biceps femoris flaps (based on the sciatic vessels) were elevated. Animals were divided into three groups: part A, assessment of muscle flap viability at 7 days using the tetrazolium dye staining technique (n = 7); part B, assessment of vascular anatomy using lead oxide injection technique (n = 7); and part C, assessment of total and regional capillary blood flow using the radioactive microsphere technique (n = 6). The results in part A show that the average viable area of the latissimus dorsi flap was 96 +/- 0.4 percent (mean +/- SEM) in the delayed group and 84 +/- 0.7 percent (mean +/- SEM) in the control group (p < 0.05, n = 7), and the mean viable area of the biceps femoris flap was 95 +/- 2 percent in the delayed group and 78 +/- 5 percent in the control group (p < 0.05, n = 7). In part B, it was found that the line of necrosis in the latissimus dorsi flap usually appeared at the junction between the second and third vascular territory in the flap. Necrosis of the biceps femoris flap usually occurred in the third territory, and occasionally in both the second and the third territories. In Part C, total capillary blood flow in delayed flaps (both the latissimus dorsi and biceps femoris) was significantly higher than that in the control flaps (p < 0.05). Increased regional capillary blood flow was found in the middle and distal regions, compared with the control (p < 0.05, n = 6). In conclusion, ligation of either the dominant vascular pedicle in the biceps femoris muscle flap or the nondominant pedicle in the latissimus dorsi muscle flap in a delay procedure 1 week before flap elevation improves capillary blood flow and muscle viability. Vascular delay prevents distal flap necrosis in two rabbit muscle flap models.  相似文献

The distribution of murine bone marrow cells in regard to cell cycle was examined using flow cytometry technique. In normal NIH mice the percentage of cells being into phases G1/0, S and G2 + M constitutes 78, 15 and 7%, respectively. In mice subjected to X-irradiation (2, 12 Gy), the thermal burn, and X-irradiation plus the burn the proportion of G2 + M-cells increased, which may be presumably due to their delay on stage G2 of the cell cycle.
