Sex differences in aging occur in many animal species, and they include sex differences in lifespan, in the onset and progression of age‐associated decline, and in physiological and molecular markers of aging. Sex differences in aging vary greatly across the animal kingdom. For example, there are species with longer‐lived females, species where males live longer, and species lacking sex differences in lifespan. The underlying causes of sex differences in aging remain mostly unknown. Currently, we do not understand the molecular drivers of sex differences in aging, or whether they are related to the accepted hallmarks or pillars of aging or linked to other well‐characterized processes. In particular, understanding the role of sex‐determination mechanisms and sex differences in aging is relatively understudied. Here, we take a comparative, interdisciplinary approach to explore various hypotheses about how sex differences in aging arise. We discuss genomic, morphological, and environmental differences between the sexes and how these relate to sex differences in aging. Finally, we present some suggestions for future research in this area and provide recommendations for promising experimental designs.  相似文献

At the present time, many AIDS clinical trials compare drug therapies by a time-to-event primary endpoint that measures the durability of suppression of HIV replication. For such studies, survival differences tend to occur early and/or late in the follow-up period due to drug differences in initial potency and/or durability of efficacy, and detecting these differences is of primary interest. We propose a weighted log-rank statistic that emphasizes early and/or late survival differences. We also consider some versatile tests that also emphasize these differences but are sensitive to a wider range of alternatives. The performances of the new tests are evaluated in numerical studies. For the alternatives of interest, the new tests show greater power and flexibility than commonly used weighted log-rank tests and related versatile tests. When the main interest is in detecting early and/or late survival differences, these tests may be preferable to the other versatile and weighted log-rank tests that have been studied.  相似文献

Maternal reproductive investment includes both the energetic costs of gestation and lactation. For most humans, the metabolic costs of lactation will exceed those of gestation. Mothers must balance reproductive investment in any single offspring against future reproductive potential. Among mammals broadly, mothers may differentially invest in offspring based on sex and maternal condition provided such differences investment influence future offspring reproductive success. For humans, there has been considerable debate if there are physiological differences in maternal investment by offspring sex. Two recent studies have suggested that milk composition differs by infant sex, with male infants receiving milk containing higher fat and energy; prior human studies have not reported sex‐based differences in milk composition. This study investigates offspring sex‐based differences in milk macronutrients, milk energy, and nursing frequency (per 24 h) in a sample of 103 Filipino mothers nursing infants less than 18 months of age. We found no differences in milk composition by infant sex. There were no significant differences in milk composition of mothers nursing first‐born versus later‐born sons or daughters or between high‐ and low‐income mothers nursing daughters or sons. Nursing frequency also showed no significant differences by offspring sex, sex by birth order, or sex by maternal economic status. In the Cebu sample, there is no support for sex‐based differences in reproductive investment during lactation as indexed by milk composition or nursing frequency. Further investigation in other populations is necessary to evaluate the potential for sex‐based differences in milk composition among humans. In many instances, there are large sex differences in mutation rates, recombination rates, selection, rates of gene flow, and genetic drift. Mutation rates are often higher in males, a difference that has been estimated both directly and indirectly. The higher male mutation rate appears related to the larger number of cell divisions in male lineages but mutation rates also appear gene- and organism-specific. When there is recombination in only one sex, it is always the homogametic sex. When there is recombination in both sexes, females often have higher recombination but there are many exceptions. There are a number of hypotheses to explain the sex differences in recombination. Sex-specific differences in selection may result in stable polymorphisms or for sex chromosomes, faster evolutionary change. In addition, sex-dependent selection may result in antagonistic pleiotropy or sexually antagonistic genes. There are many examples of sex-specific differences in gene flow (dispersal) and a number of adaptive explanations for these differences. The overall effective population size (genetic drift) is dominated by the lower sex-specific effective population size. The mean of the mutation, recombination, and gene flow rates over the two sexes can be used in a population genetics context unless there are sex-specific differences in selection or genetic drift. Sex-specific differences in these evolutionary factors appear to be unrelated to each other. The evolutionary explanations for sex-specific differences for each factor are multifaceted and, in addition, explanations may include chance, nonadaptive differences, or mechanistic, nonevolutionary factors.  相似文献

Siblings within the same family often differ dramatically in phenotype. Some differences are attributable to initial maternal handicaps (birth or hatching asynchrony, differences in egg or neonate size and hormonal or antioxidant titre); but differences among siblings may also arise from differences in the brood-rearing environment that offspring experience. Here, I use a model system--a long-term study of nestlings in an altricial bird--to study how an initial maternal handicap, hatching asynchrony, regulates the effective social environment of siblings in the same family as measured by offspring survival. The interaction of family size and structure generated wide differences in the effective environments of siblings living in the same physical space (a nest), and reared by the same parents, in the same family structure. Social rank was the key component of the unshared environment of contemporary siblings, and was alone sufficient to generate near-maximal differences in offspring performance. Nestlings sitting side-by-side effectively lived in different worlds.  相似文献

Geographic or ethnic differences in the occurrence of disease often provide insights into causes of disease and possible opportunities for disease prevention. Persons in China appear to have a consistently lower prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia than persons in the United States and Europe; reasons for these prevalence differences might include genetic differences, differences in environmental exposures or a combination of both. With increasing obesity, gout is becoming endemic in China. Finally, symptomatic knee osteoarthritis is extremely common in China and constitutes a major public health problem there.  相似文献

Sex differences in cardiovascular disease and cardiac physiology have been reported in humans as well as in animal models. Premenopausal women have reduced cardiovascular disease compared to men, but the incidence of cardiovascular disease in women increases following menopause. Sex differences in cardiomyocytes likely contribute to the differences in male–female physiology and response to disease. Sex differences in the heart have been noted in electrophysiology, contractility, signaling, metabolism, and cardioprotection. These differences appear to be due, at least in part, to differences in gene and protein expression as well as in posttranslational protein modifications. This review will focus primarily on estrogen-mediated male–female differences in protein expression and signaling pathways in the heart and cardiac cells. It should be emphasized that these basic differences are not intrinsically beneficial or detrimental per se; the difference can be good or bad depending on the context and circumstances.  相似文献

Gender-related differences in EEE coherence were studied in young male and female university students during performance of Stroop task, in which color and word could be congruent or incongruent and spatially integrated or separated. The most clear-cut gender-related differences in the EEG coherence were revealed in the alpha2 and beta frequency bands. In the alpha2 band, gender-related differences in the interhemispheric coherence were associated with spatial characteristics of stimuli: left or right presentation and features of mutual localization of relevant and irrelevant stimuli. These differences were observed when information was addressed to the left hemisphere. Gender-related differences associated with spatial organization of stimuli were also observed for intrahemispheric beta1 coherence. Under conditions of the spatial separation of relevant and irrelevant stimuli, only females demonstrated enhancement of coherence in response to the right-side stimulus presentation as compared to the left-side presentation. It was shown that, during the differentiation of the semantic meaning of verbal stimuli, gender-related differences were caused by the features of integration of beta2 oscillators in the posterior cortical regions. The results are indicative of qualitative gender-related differences in organization of both frontoparietal and lateral attention systems in actualization of selective processes.  相似文献

We have characterized the impact of strain-based genetic differences on the efficiency of the intravenous cationic liposome-DNA complex (CLDC)-based gene transfer and expression in mice. We also investigated what steps in the gene delivery and expression pathway appeared responsible for these strain-related differences and whether such differences could be compensated for either by agents that alter host pathways important in CLDC-mediated gene transfer and expression, or by changes in CLDC formulation. We found that different mouse strains can exhibit different expression levels and/or differences in the amount of plasmid DNA delivered to the organs where the DNA is expressed. Furthermore, drug pretreatment or reformulation of the CLDC could improve DNA delivery and/or gene expression in a strain-specific fashion. We conclude that genetic factors critically modify both the tissue deposition and the expression of genetic materials delivered by CLDC. Because manipulation of either the host or the CLDC could at least partially compensate for these strain-related differences, such strategies may be required to effectively use non-viral gene transfer approaches in genetically diverse populations.  相似文献

Summary This study examines the hypothesis that intersexual differences in habitat use by small mammals is an adaptive strategy. Specifically, I evaluate the occurrence of sexual differences in habitat by Peromyscus and Microtus, and test possible adaptive mechanisms which may lead to such differences.White-footed mice and meadow voles were live-trapped and microhabitat quantified in four habitats. Sexual differences in microhabitat use were found in three of 12 comparisons. These differences may be related to density dependent resource subdivision and habitat heterogencity, but neither of these can account completely for the observed patterns. Sexual differences in habitat do not appear to be an evolutionary strategy maximizing reproductive effort by females, or reducing predation. These sexual differences may reduce intraspecific resource overlap, or may simply reflect reproductive constraints limiting female habitat use to suitable nesting areas.  相似文献

Risk of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is high in west Africans compared with Europeans, and risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is high in Native Americans compared with Europeans. These differences are not accounted for by differences in allele or haplotype frequencies in the human leucocyte antigen (HLA) region or any other loci known to influence risk of rheumatic disease. Where there has been admixture between two or more ethnic groups that differ in risk of disease, studies of the relationship of disease risk to proportionate admixture can help to distinguish between genetic and environmental explanations for ethnic differences in disease risk and to map the genes underlying these differences.  相似文献

Many metabolomics studies aim to find ‘biomarkers’: sets of molecules that are consistently elevated or decreased upon experimental manipulation. Biological effects, however, often manifest themselves along a continuum of individual differences between the biological replicates in the experiment. Such differences are overlooked or even diminished by methods in standard use for metabolomics, although they may contain a wealth of information on the experiment. Properly understanding individual differences is crucial for generating knowledge in fields like personalised medicine, evolution and ecology. We propose to use simultaneous component analysis with individual differences constraints (SCA-IND), a data analysis method from psychology that focuses on these differences. This method constructs axes along the natural biochemical differences between biological replicates, comparable to principal components. The model may shed light on changes in the individual differences between experimental groups, but also on whether these differences correspond to, e.g., responders and non-responders or to distinct chemotypes. Moreover, SCA-IND reveals the individuals that respond most to a manipulation and are best suited for further experimentation. The method is illustrated by the analysis of individual differences in the metabolic response of cabbage plants to herbivory. The model reveals individual differences in the response to shoot herbivory, where two ‘response chemotypes’ may be identified. In the response to root herbivory the model shows that individual plants differ strongly in response dynamics. Thereby SCA-IND provides a hitherto unavailable view on the chemical diversity of the induced plant response, that greatly increases understanding of the system.  相似文献

Males and females differ physiologically, but they also do different things. Thus, we when we note sex differences in average rates of parasite prevalence, incidence or intensity of infection, or in clinical outcome, we may attribute such differences either to the different physiology, or to different activities, or to some combination of differences between the sexes. Hence the subject of this month's debate-to explore the question of ‘why do certain males or females have higher or lower incidence or prevalence or severity of parasitic infection?’ Don Bundy opens with a discussion of the epidemiological patterns, while Jim Alexander and Bill Stimson explore some of the physiological effects of sex and sex hormones on the host's immune response to infection.  相似文献

The approaches used in studying status systems (or systems of prestige or social honor) can be classified as either materialist or nonmaterialist, and the essential differences between them reflect differences in assumptions about human motivations. It is argued that the materialist approach is untenable. The nonmaterialist approaches also differ among themselves in motivational assumptions, and these differences in turn lead to very different views about the nature of status systems. Three nonmaterialist approaches are analyzed, and it is suggested that one of them is more compelling than the others.  相似文献

Meiotic recombination is sexually dimorphic in most mammalian species, including humans, but the basis for the male:female differences remains unclear. In the present study, we used cytological methodology to directly compare recombination levels between human males and females, and to examine possible sex-specific differences in upstream events of double-strand break (DSB) formation and synaptic initiation. Specifically, we utilized the DNA mismatch repair protein MLH1 as a marker of recombination events, the RecA homologue RAD51 as a surrogate for DSBs, and the synaptonemal complex proteins SYCP3 and/or SYCP1 to examine synapsis between homologs. Consistent with linkage studies, genome-wide recombination levels were higher in females than in males, and the placement of exchanges varied between the sexes. Subsequent analyses of DSBs and synaptic initiation sites indicated similar male:female differences, providing strong evidence that sex-specific differences in recombination rates are established at or before the formation of meiotic DSBs. We then asked whether these differences might be linked to variation in the organization of the meiotic axis and/or axis-associated DNA and, indeed, we observed striking male:female differences in synaptonemal complex (SC) length and DNA loop size. Taken together, our observations suggest that sex specific differences in recombination in humans may derive from chromatin differences established prior to the onset of the recombination pathway.  相似文献

Folk psychology advocates the existence of gender differences in socio-cognitive functions such as 'reading' the mental states of others or discerning subtle differences in body-language. A female advantage has been demonstrated for emotion recognition from facial expressions, but virtually nothing is known about gender differences in recognizing bodily stimuli or body language. The aim of the present study was to investigate potential gender differences in a series of tasks, involving the recognition of distinct features from point light displays (PLDs) depicting bodily movements of a male and female actor. Although recognition scores were considerably high at the overall group level, female participants were more accurate than males in recognizing the depicted actions from PLDs. Response times were significantly higher for males compared to females on PLD recognition tasks involving (i) the general recognition of 'biological motion' versus 'non-biological' (or 'scrambled' motion); or (ii) the recognition of the 'emotional state' of the PLD-figures. No gender differences were revealed for a control test (involving the identification of a color change in one of the dots) and for recognizing the gender of the PLD-figure. In addition, previous findings of a female advantage on a facial emotion recognition test (the 'Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test' (Baron-Cohen, 2001)) were replicated in this study. Interestingly, a strong correlation was revealed between emotion recognition from bodily PLDs versus facial cues. This relationship indicates that inter-individual or gender-dependent differences in recognizing emotions are relatively generalized across facial and bodily emotion perception. Moreover, the tight correlation between a subject's ability to discern subtle emotional cues from PLDs and the subject's ability to basically discriminate biological from non-biological motion provides indications that differences in emotion recognition may - at least to some degree - be related to more basic differences in processing biological motion per se.  相似文献

Significant differences in susceptibility of 23 bean cultivars were found after natural infection by a single-pustule isolate of bean rust in field trials over three seasons. These differences were not related to differences in the number of adaxial or abaxial acicular leaf hairs, latent period in primary leaves or a difference in pustule size. Forty-five large-seeded bean lines with partial resistance to a single-pustule isolate were developed by recurrent selection for commercial evaluation.  相似文献
