There are major quantitative and qualitative changes in the milk lipids during lactation in the tammar wallaby, Macropus eugenii. The crude lipid content of the milk is relatively low during the first 10 weeks of lactation; between 10 and 26 weeks post partum the lipid content increases gradually but after that it increases rapidly. The triglyceride fraction of the lipid at early stages of lactation contains a large amount of palmitic acid and relatively little oleic acid whereas mature milk exhibits little palmitic and much oleic acid. In the early stages of lactation fat represents 15% of the total solids and carbohydrate 55%; around 26-30 weeks post partum the carbohydrate moiety falls sharply to a level less than 2% of the solids while lipids increase to c. 60% of the solids. These changes coincide with increases in milk solids, emergence of the young from the pouch, ingestion of herbage, and fermentation of cellulose in the stomach.  相似文献

1. Twenty one sequential milk samples from an American marsupial (Monodelphis domestica) were analyzed. 2. The solids fraction was relatively low initially (10% w/w) and then increased to about 30% at mid-lactation where it remained until lactation ceased. 3. During the first 50 days of lactation the relative proportions of protein, fat and carbohydrate were 36, 28 and 34%, respectively, of the solids fraction. 4. Sodium and magnesium concentrations were constant; however levels of potassium and magnesium varied substantially. 5. The milk of M. domestica exhibits a similar pattern of quantitative and qualitative changes to that seen in Australian marsupials.  相似文献

The intake of milk components (total solids, carbohydrate, protein, lipid, energy) by suckling tammar wallabies ( Macropus eugenii ), from peak lactation to independence, was measured using a double-isotope dilution technique and chemical analysis of milk samples. The time of peak intake of milk solids (day 256 of lactation or 1126 g of offspring weight) was similar to that for whole milk. Peak intake of carbohydrate occurred earlier than this (235 days) and peak intakes of protein and lipid occurred later (262 days and 266 days, respectively). Intake of gross energy peaked at 262 days and represented a maternal yield of about 207 KJ.Kg-0.75.d-1. This is much lower than peak lactational energy yields in most other mammals, but the duration of lactation is longer in tammars than in other mammals. Total output of energy in milk by tammar mothers was 63 MJ, and this would require an intake of about 98 MJ of metabolizable energy in food. This requirement, which is equivalent to 21 MJ/kg of maternal weight, is similar to those calculated for sheep and cattle, suggesting that there are not large differences between marsupial and placental herbivores in terms of weight-related allocation of energy to reproduction. We suggest that a strategy of minimizing the peak energetic demand of lactation may be an important adaptation for a small, primarily grazing mammal due to size-related physiological constraints on elevating herbage intake and the increasing risk from predators when grazing time is increased.  相似文献

Milk yield and composition of major milk constituents were measured in captive, nursing reindeer. Registration of milk production was performed during two successive lactations (2001 and 2002). The milk yield was significantly affected by week of lactation (P<0.001) and by individual (P<0.001). The lactation curve had an asymmetrical peak 3 weeks postpartum and the milk yield at peak lactation was 983 g/day (range 595-1239). The length of lactation varied from 24 to 26 weeks and average total milk production was 99.5 kg. From peak lactation the milk production decreased linearly (P<0.001) until milk production was terminated. Mean values for content of major milk constituents were 15.5% fat, 9.9% protein and 2.5% lactose. The content of fat and protein increased markedly with the lactation stage (P<0.001), while lactose showed a slight decrease (P<0.001). The milk composition was significantly affected by stage of lactation (P<0.001). There was a marginally significant decrease in protein:fat ratio (P=0.06) as protein was substituted by fat with stage of lactation. The caloric value of the milk averaged 8.7 kJ/g and increased significantly with the stage of lactation (P<0.001). The overall increase in milk gross energy content during lactation was 67.6%. The energy output averaged 7996 kJ/day at peak lactation and decreased significantly during the course of lactation (P=0.002).  相似文献

The milk constituents of Dasyurus viverrinus, a carnivorous marsupial, exhibited major quantitative and qualitative changes during the course of lactation. The milk produced in the early stages of lactation was dilute, about 13-16% (w/w) solids before 3 weeks with carbohydrate representing the major fraction. In the latter stages of lactation the milk was concentrated, around 30% solids, and lipid was the predominant fraction. Palmitic acid was the major fatty acid present in early-stage milk but oleic acid became predominant in milk after 10 weeks post-partum. The changes in milk composition in D. viverrinus were similar to those described for the milks of herbivorous marsupials which therefore suggests that this pattern may be uniform throughout the Marsupialia.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To compare importance of rate of initial weight loss for long term outcome in obese patients and to compare efficacy of two different weight maintenance programmes. DESIGN: Subjects were randomised to either rapid or slow initial weight loss. Completing patients were re-randomised to one year weight maintenance programme of ad lib diet or fixed energy intake diet. Patients were followed up one year later. SETTING: University research department in Copenhagen, Denmark. SUBJECTS: 43 (41 women) obese adults (body mass index 27-40) who were otherwise healthy living in or around Copenhagen. INTERVENTIONS: 8 weeks of low energy diet (2 MJ/day) or 17 weeks of conventional diet (5 MJ/day), both supported by an anorectic compound (ephedrine 20 mg and caffeine 200 mg thrice daily); one year weight maintenance programme of ad lib, low fat, high carbohydrate diet or fixed energy intake diet (< or = 7.8 MJ/day), both with reinforcement sessions 2-3 times monthly. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Mean initial weight loss and proportion of patients maintaining a weight loss of > 5 kg at follow up. RESULTS: Mean initial weight loss was 12.6 kg (95% confidence interval 10.9 to 14.3 kg) in rapid weight loss group and 12.6 (9.9 to 15.3) kg in conventional diet group. Rate of initial weight loss had no effect on weight maintenance after 6 or 12 months of weight maintenance or at follow up. After weight maintenance programme, the ad lib group had maintained 13.2 (8.1 to 18.3) kg of the initial weight loss of 13.5 (11.4 to 15.5) kg, and the fixed energy intake group had maintained 9.7 (6.1 to 13.3) kg of the initial 13.8 (11.8 to 15.7) kg weight loss (group difference 3.5 (-2.4 to 9.3) kg). Regained weight at follow up was greater in fixed energy intake group than in ad lib group (11.3 (7.1 to 15.5) kg v 5.4 (2.3 to 8.6) kg, group difference 5.9 (0.7 to 11.1) kg, P < 0.03). At follow up, 65% of ad lib group and 40% of fixed energy intake group had maintained a weight loss of > 5 kg (P < 0.07). CONCLUSION: Ad lib, low fat, high carbohydrate diet was superior to fixed energy intake for maintaining weight after a major weight loss. The rate of the initial weight loss did not influence long term outcome.  相似文献

Food intake and digestion were investigated at four stages in the first 218 days of lactation in tammar wallabies ( Macropus eugenii ) carrying litters of one, and in non-lactating females as a control. This period of lactation in tammars, which includes the phase of exponential growth of the young, is comparable to gestation plus early lactation in ruminant placentals. Food and energy intakes by mothers remained at the non-lactating level while rate of growth of young was slow (up to Day 105 of lactation) but then rose as the growth rate of young increased, keeping pace with the predicted requirements for milk synthesis and export. There was no indication of the energy deficit seen in late gestation and early lactation in many herbivorous placental mammals. The gross efficiency of utilization of ME for growth of offspring was estimated as 13–15%, which is at least as high as values for placentals during gestation. The mean intake of metabolizable energy (ME) at 218 days was 603 kJ.kg-0.75.d-1, which represented 136% of ME intake by nonlactating females, or an increment of 159 kJ.kg-0.75.d-1. It was estimated that ME intake may rise to 773 kJ.kg-0.75.d-1 at peak lactation, which would be 174% of the non-lactating level or an increment of 329 kJ.kg-0.75. d-1. This allometrically-scaled increment is similar to values for some ruminants that use body reserves extensively to offset peak lactational food requirements. These and previously-reported trends suggest that ecologically comparable herbivorous marsupials and placentals utilize different physiological strategies to minimize demands on food resources during reproduction, but that both daily and overall demands can be similar.  相似文献

The milk energy intakes and growth rates of suckling young at peak lactation of 62 mammalian species and subspecies, all measured using either the weigh–suckle–weigh, the isotope dilution or the isotope transfer method, were evaluated. The mean daily gross energy intakes (GEI) were as low as 12 kJ in a small rodent (mouse) to as high as 249 MJ in a phocid seal (hooded seal Cystophora cristata ), while the daily growth rates at peak lactation ranged from 0.4 to 5.9 kg. Several allometric equations were calculated to explore the relationships between gross energy intake via milk and body weight (BW), growth rate and BW, as well as between gross energy intake via milk and growth rate. The results suggest that both GEI via milk and growth rates are proportional to BW to the power of 0.82. Accordingly, the metabolic weight of suckling mammalian young should be expressed as BW0.82. The predictive values of the calculated equations indicate that suckling young at peak lactation consume c . 883 kJ day−1 kg−1 BW0.82 and have growth rates of 32 g day−1 kg−1 BW0.82. However, large deviations for some species and few outliers were found. These equations could be used to predict values for species that have not been studied, provided that the BW falls within the range of weights used to derive the equations.  相似文献

Milk collected from the red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) between day 100 and 260 of lactation showed major changes in milk composition at around day 200 of lactation, the time at which the pouch young begins to temporarily exit the pouch and eat herbage. The carbohydrate content of milk declined abruptly at this time and although there was only a small increase in total protein content, SDS PAGE analysis of milk revealed asynchrony in the secretory pattern of individual proteins. The levels of alpha-lactalbumin, beta-lactoglobulin, serum albumin and transferrin remain unchanged during lactation. In contrast, the protease inhibitor cystatin, and the putative protease inhibitor whey acidic protein (WAP) first appeared in milk at elevated concentrations after approximately 150 days of lactation and then ceased to be secreted at approximately 200 days. In addition, a major whey protein, late lactation protein, was first detected in milk around the time whey acidic protein and cystatin cease to be secreted and was present at least until day 260 of lactation. The co-ordinated, but asynchronous secretion of putative protease inhibitors in milk may have several roles during lactation including tissue remodelling in the mammary gland and protecting specific proteins in milk required for physiological development of the dependent young.  相似文献

Milk was collected at various stages of lactation from a group of tammar wallabies, M. eugenii, in which parturition had been synchronized. The milk carbohydrate was determined by a phenol-sulfuric acid method which had been modified to give equal colour yields for galactose and glucose. The mean carbohydrate content increased gradually during the first 6 months of lactation to a peak of 13 g hexose/100 ml of milk, but then fell rapidly to much lower values, over the following 2 months. Throughouth lactation, galactose was the predominant monosaccharide constituent of acid hydrolysates of the milk carbohydrate. Glucose, glucosamine, galactosamine and sialic acid were the only other monosaccharides present. Qualitative changes were investigated by gel filtration and thin-layer chromatography. During the first 6 months post partum the milk carbohydrate was composed of a variety of oligosaccharides including lactose, but from 8 months onwards it consisted mainly of free monosaccharides. Between 6 and 8 months an intermediate pattern was observed, i.e. a mixture of lower oligosaccharides and free monosaccharides. In two animals which suckled both a new-born pouch young and a young at foot, the mammary gland supplying the new-born secreted milk which was rich in oligosaccharides, whereas that supplying the young at foot produced milk in which the carbohydrates were mainly free monosaccharides, and which had a much lower carbohydrate content.  相似文献

Common marmosets, one of the smallest anthropoid primates, have a relatively high reproductive rate, capable of producing twins or triplets twice per year. Growth and development of infants is relatively rapid, and lactation is relatively short at less than 3 months. Although mean values for the proximate composition (dry matter, protein, fat and sugar) of captive common marmoset milks fall within anthropoid norms, composition is highly variable among individual samples, with concentrations of milk fat ranging from below 1 to over 10%. To examine the extent to which this variation might be a consequence of captive conditions, we collected milk samples from wild common marmosets freely living on a farm in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The proximate composition of the milk samples was assayed using identical techniques as used for the captive marmoset milks. The composition of the milk of wild common marmosets was also variable, but tended to be lower in dry matter, fat, protein and gross energy, and higher in sugar than milks from captive animals. Interestingly, the percentage of estimated gross energy from the protein fraction of the milks was relatively constant in both wild and captive marmosets and did not differ between wild and captive animals: 1 kcal of common marmoset milk contains on average (+/-SEM) 0.035+/-.001 g of protein regardless of the gross energy content of the milk or whether the milk was from a wild or captive animal. In contrast, in 1 kcal of low-energy milks, the amount of sugar was significantly higher and the amount of fat significantly lower than in 1 kcal of high-energy milks. Thus, common marmoset milk exhibits axes of variability (especially fat concentration) as well as a significant stability in the relative amount of protein.  相似文献

Specific changes in milk composition during lactation in the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii) were correlated with the ages of the developing pouch young (PY). The present experiment was designed to test the hypothesis that the sucking pattern of the PY determines the course of mammary development in the tammar wallaby. To test this hypothesis, groups of 60-day-old PY were fostered repeatedly onto one group of host mothers so that a constant sucking stimulus on the mammary gland was maintained for 56 days to allow the lactational stage to progress 42 days ahead of the age of the young. Analysis of the milk in fostered and control groups showed the timing of changes in the concentration of protein and carbohydrate were essentially unaffected by altering the sucking regime. The only change in milk protein secretion was a small delay in the timing of down-regulation of the secretion of whey acidic protein and early lactation protein in the host tammars. In addition, the rates of growth and development of the foster PY were significantly increased relative to those of the control PY because of ingesting more milk with a higher energy content and different composition than normal for their age. The present study demonstrates that the lactating tammar wallaby regulates both milk composition and the rate of milk production and that these determine the rates of PY growth and development, irrespective of the age of the PY.  相似文献

Human milk provides infants with proteins that aid in the prevention of infections and facilitate the digestion and absorption of other nutrients. Maternal diet is not believed to affect the protein concentration of breast milk. However, the maternal factors that regulate the expression of genes for specific milk proteins are not well characterized. We hypothesized that nutrition could be one of the factors. We fed Sprague-Dawley rats five diets representing common nutrient deficiencies and energy deficiency during pregnancy and lactation: low-zinc (Zn; 7 microg/g), low-iron (Fe; 6 microg/g), low-protein (12.5% albumin), pair-fed control diet (lactation only, 20% less kcal) and control diet (Zn, 25 microg/g; Fe, 100 mug/g; protein, 21%) ad libitum. At day 10 of lactation, the mammary gland was removed for RNA extraction. Northern blots of mRNA from the different groups were performed by hybridization with beta-casein and whey acidic protein (WAP) cDNA probes. The expression of beta-casein mRNA in rat mammary gland was significantly (P<.005) increased in the pair-fed group when compared to the control group. The expression of WAP mRNA was also significantly (P<.005) increased in the pair-fed group as well as in the low-Fe group when compared to the control group. The concentration of beta-casein in milk was significantly higher for the low-zinc and the pair-fed groups only. The concentration of WAP in milk was not different among groups. These results suggest that compromised maternal nutrition can affect the expression of two individual milk proteins and may have functional implications with regard to bioactive proteins in milk.  相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of water restriction on lactation performance in Aardi goats. The experiment divided into 3 periods each of 6 days; control, water restriction and rehydration. Nine lactating Aardi goats in early lactation were divided into two groups. One group (n = 5) received 50% and the other group (n = 4) received 25% restriction of drinking water relative to their consumed water during control period. Both groups exhibited a fall in dry matter intake with almost a similar rate. Live weight loss during water restriction was similar in both groups (8 and 6% in 50 and 25% water restriction, respectively). Milk production was also reduced by 20 and 18% with 50 and 25% water restriction, respectively. Milk fat percentage was lower in goats that received 25% restriction while it was maintained unchanged in the 50% restriction group. Total solids of milk tended to decrease in goats with 25% water restriction without any change in milk osmolality. Whereas, milk osmolality increased without any alterations in total solids of milk with 50% water restriction. It could be concluded that lactating Aardi goats possess a high capacity of withstanding water restriction when it was coupled with higher environmental temperature.  相似文献

Changes in the yield and chemical composition of milk, together with those in the nipple preferences and suckling behavior of infants, were followed in three lactating Japanese monkeys rearing single infants under laboratory conditions at monthly intervals for six months after their paturition. Milk accumulating in the mammary glands during a 4-hr separation of the infant was collected by milking under anesthesia with the aid of a physiological dose of oxytocin. The stage of full lactation appeared to last for about two or three months after parturition. The milk at this stage contained 14.0% of total solids, 4.2% of lipids, 1.6% of proteins, and 6.2% of lactose, and the concentrations of Na, Cl, and K in the milk water were 7.4, 15.1, and 5.9 mM, respectively. From the 9th or 13th week of lactation onwards, according to the individual, the milk composition changed appreciably and the time during which the young left hold of the mother's nipple also increased. The weaning of young in the Japanese monkey appears to begin during the 3rd or 4th month of age. The milk production then wanes and almost ceases by the end of the 6th month. The nipple preference of the young was generally established completely by the 3rd, or the 8th at latest, week of age. However, no difference in either the yield or composition of the milk secreted was found between the mammary glands of the preferred and non-preferred sides. Without regard to the apparent nipple preference, infants seem to ingest milk from the mother's breasts of both sides. Accurate estimation of the rate of milk production could not be achieved, but the rate was expected to be 150–200 g/day at the height of lactation based on the relation between the mother's body weight and the milk production rates of other primate species. A disparity was noted between the observed and estimated values for the milk yield, and a diurnal fluctuation in the milk secretion of the Japanese monkey was inferred. Effects of food restriction on the length of lactational diestrus in rats   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
The effect of food restriction (60% of an ad lib ration) for the first 14 days postpartum on serum progesterone levels and the duration of lactational diestrus was determined in rat dams nursing litters of eight pups. Food restricted dams showed a longer period of lactational diestrus than ad lib fed dams. Food restriction also caused an increase in progesterone levels that was maintained beyond the period of food restriction itself. Treatment with the dopamine agonist bromocryptine mesylate (0.5 mg/day) either from Day 1 or Day 9 postpartum onward induced early termination of lactational diestrus in both ad lib and food restricted dams but the effect was more rapid in the ad lib fed than in the food restricted females. In both cases, however, the effects of bromocryptine administration on milk delivery showed a similar time course providing indirect evidence that prolactin suppression was equivalent under both diet conditions. These data suggest that food restriction during lactation results in increased progesterone levels that most likely result from increased prolactin release. Further, while prolactin suppression in food restricted dams reduces the duration of lactational diestrus, the latency to do so is somewhat longer than that seen in ad lib fed females, suggesting that some other mechanism may also be operating to suppress ovulation in the food restricted female.  相似文献

The generalization that anthropoid primates produce dilute milks that are low in protein and energy is based primarily on data from large monkeys of the families Cebidae and Cercopithecidae, as well as humans. The marmosets and tamarins (Callitrichidae) are not only much smaller in body size, but also typically raise multiple offspring during a relatively brief lactation. We hypothesized that selection for small body size and high reproductive rate might favor secretion of milk of higher energy and protein concentrations. To test this hypothesis, 46 milk samples collected from 10 common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus, ca. 350 g) were assayed for dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), fat, and sugar; and gross energy (GE) was calculated from these constituents. We also assayed five samples collected from three golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia, ca. 700 g) and six samples collected from a single pygmy marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea, ca. 150 g) over two lactation periods. All samples were collected between days 10 and 57 post partum, representing mid lactation for these species. The milks of these three species were similar, containing 14.0%, 16.1%, and 13.7% DM; 2.7%, 2.6%, and 2.9% CP; 3.6%, 5.2%, and 3.7% fat; 7.4%, 7.2%, and 7.8% sugar; and 0.76, 0.90, and 0.82 kcal/g for common marmosets, golden lion tamarins, and the pygmy marmoset, respectively. These species produced milks with energy values that were within the range reported for large anthropoids, albeit with slightly higher protein concentration. However, milk composition did vary substantially among individual common marmoset females, especially in the proportion of milk energy derived from fat. In contrast, CP as expressed as a percent of GE was remarkably constant among common marmoset females. Callitrichid milk appeared to be similar to that of larger anthropoid primates in GE, but was higher in CP and in the proportion of GE from CP. However, the small sample sizes for the golden lion tamarin and the pygmy marmoset, and the wide variation in milk composition found among common marmoset females cautions against definitively characterizing the milks of callitrichids from these data.  相似文献

The energetics of lactation in grey seal females and their pups was investigated using labelled water methods. Average total energy output (maternal maintenance energy expenditure plus milk energy output), from the estimated change in total body gross energy, of 15 females was 99.8 MJ/d (S.E. 2.5), which was nearly 30% lower than previously published estimates. In seven females, energy output was partitioned into milk energy output plus maternal maintenance energy expenditure. Average investment in milk was 69.7MJ/d (S.E. 5-0), and lactation costs accounted for 70% of total maternal energy output. Average daily maternal maintenance energy expenditure (heat output) of the same seven females was 30.0MJ/d (S.E. 5.0), which was equivalent to 2.3 times the basal metabolic rate predicted from Kleiber's (1975) allometric equation. In seven pups, milk consumption rates were measured isotopically and these averaged 3.0kg/d (S.E. 0.2). In four pups energy expenditure, measured using doubly-labelled water, averaged 13.5MJ/d (S.E. 1.2), equivalent to 3.7 times the basal metabolic rate predicted from Kleiber's (1975) equation. All females were in negative water balance during lactation which was associated with loss of tissue during fasting. Mean water efflux was 3966ml/d (S.E. 286) and mean water influx was 2677ml/d (S.E. 245), but there was no evidence that females are dehydrated during lactation.  相似文献

Energy intake and milk production were measured in 12 mink dams raising litters of 3, 6 and 9 kits one to four weeks post partum by means of balance experiments and measurements of milk intake of the kits by the water isotope dilution technique. The dams were fed ad libitum on a conventional wet mink diet (DM: 323 g/kg; CP: 173 g/kg; ME: 4.4 MJ/kg). Milk samples collected from dams with corresponding litter sizes and lactation weeks, and body composition of kits nursed by these dams, were analysed for content of DM, ash, N and fat. The ME and drinking water consumption were higher in dams nursing 9 kits than in dams nursing 3 kits. The N and water balances as well as the live weight of dams were not affected by litter size. Daily milk production was higher in dams nursing 9 kits than in dams nursing 3 kits. The DM, N and fat content of the milk increased during lactation, but were not affected by litter size. Individual kit live weight was higher in litters of 3 than in litters of 6 and 9 kits four weeks post partum. The DM and fat content of the kits were lowest in kits from litters of 9 kits, whereas these kits had the highest protein content. Daily ME for maintenance of kits and the efficiency of utilisation of ME in milk for body gain were estimated to 356 kJ/kg0.75, kp ≈0.53 and kf ≈0.71, respectively. In conclusion, daily milk production increased with increasing litter size, but not in proportion to the number of kits, indicating that milk production limits the growth rate of the young. In the fourth week of lactation, milk production was not different between dams nursing 6 or 9 kits, indicating a maximum capacity.  相似文献

Alcohol and acetaldehyde were measured in milk and peripheral blood in chronic alcoholic rats, at 5 and 15 days of lactation. Ethanol in blood increased throughout lactation and the levels of acetaldehyde were much higher than in nonlactating alcoholic rats. The concentration of acetaldehyde in milk was always ca. 50% of that in blood, whereas that of ethanol varied within the range of 44-80% of the blood levels. Blood alcohol levels in the corresponding sucking pups were much lower than in maternal blood and increased throughout lactation. The time course of ethanol and acetaldehyde concentration in blood and milk were determined in normal lactating rats after cyanamide (40 mg/kg) and ethanol administration (2 or 4 g/kg). Milk alcohol reached higher concentrations than in blood within the first hour of ethanol administration, decreasing and remaining constant thereafter at ca. 65% of those in blood. Acetaldehyde levels in milk were always 35-45% lower than in blood. No alcohol dehydrogenase activity was found in homogenates of mammary tissue; however there was some aldehyde dehydrogenase activity. A significant decrease in mammary tissue aldehyde dehydrogenase was found in chronic alcoholic rats. The role of this enzyme is discussed.  相似文献
