Species-specific differences in the assimilation of atmosphericCO2 depends upon differences in the capacities for the biochemicalreactions that regulate the gas-exchange process. Quantifyingthese differences for more than a few species, however, hasproven difficult. Therefore, to understand better how speciesdiffer in their capacity for CO2 assimilation, a widely usedmodel, capable of partitioning limitations to the activity ofribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase, to the rateof ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate regeneration via electron transport, and to the rate of triose phosphate utilization was used toanalyse 164 previously published A/Ci, curves for 109 C3 plantspecies. Based on this analysis, the maximum rate of carboxylation,Vcmax, ranged from 6µmol m–2 s–1 for the coniferousspecies Picea abies to 194µmol m–2 s–1 forthe agricultural species Beta vulgaris, and averaged 64µmolm–2 s–1 across all species. The maximum rate ofelectron transport, Jmax, ranged from 17µmol m–2s–1 again for Picea abies to 372µmol m–2 s–1for the desert annual Malvastrum rotundifolium, and averaged134µmol m–2 s–1 across all species. A strongpositive correlation between Vcmax and Jmax indicated that theassimilation of CO2 was regulated in a co-ordinated manner bythese two component processes. Of the A/Ci curves analysed,23 showed either an insensitivity or reversed-sensitivity toincreasing CO2 concentration, indicating that CO2 assimilationwas limited by the utilization of triose phosphates. The rateof triose phosphate utilization ranged from 4·9 µmolm–2 s–1 for the tropical perennial Tabebuia roseato 20·1 µmol m–2 s–1 for the weedyannual Xanthium strumarium, and averaged 10·1 µmolm–2 s–1 across all species. Despite what at first glance would appear to be a wide rangeof estimates for the biochemical capacities that regulate CO2assimilation, separating these species-specific results intothose of broad plant categories revealed that Vcmax and Jmaxwere in general higher for herbaceous annuals than they werefor woody perennials. For annuals, Vcmax and Jmax averaged 75and 154 µmol m–2 s–1, while for perennialsthese same two parameters averaged only 44 and 97 µmolm2 s–1, respectively. Although these differencesbetween groups may be coincidental, such an observation pointsto differences between annuals and perennials in either theavailability or allocation of resources to the gas-exchangeprocess. The temperature dependence of C3 photosynthesis is known to vary with growth environment and with species. In an attempt to quantify this variability, a commonly used biochemically based photosynthesis model was parameterized from 19 gas exchange studies on tree and crop species. The parameter values obtained described the shape and amplitude of the temperature responses of the maximum rate of Rubisco activity (Vcmax) and the potential rate of electron transport (Jmax). Original data sets were used for this review, as it is shown that derived values of Vcmax and its temperature response depend strongly on assumptions made in derivation. Values of Jmax and Vcmax at 25 °C varied considerably among species but were strongly correlated, with an average Jmax : Vcmax ratio of 1·67. Two species grown in cold climates, however, had lower ratios. In all studies, the Jmax : Vcmax ratio declined strongly with measurement temperature. The relative temperature responses of Jmax and Vcmax were relatively constant among tree species. Activation energies averaged 50 kJ mol?1 for Jmax and 65 kJ mol?1 for Vcmax, and for most species temperature optima averaged 33 °C for Jmax and 40 °C for Vcmax. However, the cold climate tree species had low temperature optima for both Jmax(19 °C) and Vcmax (29 °C), suggesting acclimation of both processes to growth temperature. Crop species had somewhat different temperature responses, with higher activation energies for both Jmax and Vcmax, implying narrower peaks in the temperature response for these species. The results thus suggest that both growth environment and plant type can influence the photosynthetic response to temperature. Based on these results, several suggestions are made to improve modelling of temperature responses.  相似文献

Growth and nitrate uptake kinetics in vegetatively growing barley(Hordeum vulgare L., cvs Laevigatum, Golf, and Mette) were investigatedin solution culture under long-term limitations of externalnitrogen availability. Nitrate was fed to the cultures at relativeaddition rates (RA) ranging from 0.02 to 0.2 d–1. Therelative growth rate (RG, calculated for total plant dry weight)correlated well with RA in the range 0.02 to 0.07 d–1.In the RA range from 0.07 to 0.2 d–1 RG continued to increase, but an increasing fraction of nitrogen, added and absorbed, was apparently stored rather than used for structural growth. The RG of the roots was less affected by RA. Vmax, for net nitrateuptake increased with RA up to 0.11 d–1, but decreasedat higher RA. The decline in Vmax coincided with a build-upof nitrate stores in both roots and shoots. Vmax, expressedper unit nitrogen in the plants (the relative Vmax, was higherthan required for maintenance of growth (up to 30-fold) at lowRA, whereas at higher RA the relative Vmax decreased. Kineticpredictions of steady-state external nitrate concentrationsduring N-limited growth ranged from 0.2 to 5.0 mmol m–3over the RG range 0.02 to 0.11 d–1. It is suggested thatthe nitrate uptake system is not under specific regulation atlow RA, but co-ordinated with root protein synthesis and growthin general. At RA higher than 0.11 d–1, however, specificregulation of nitrate uptake, possibly via root nitrate pools, become important. The three cultivars showed very similar growthand nitrate uptake characteristics. Key words: Barley, growth, nitrogen limitation, nitrate uptake, kinetics  相似文献

Vernalization is an important determinant of the growth, development, and yield of biennial and perennial crops. Accurate simulationof its response to temperature is thus an important componentof successful crop systems modelling. Vernalization has a lowoptimum temperature compared to other temperature responsesof plants, and thus may be difficult to treat using expressionsthat are appropriate for other plant processes. This paper examinesthe application of a simple equation that has been used forother processes. It reads as v=Vmax(Tmax-TTmax- Topt ) (TTopt)ToptTmax-Topt, where v is thedaily rate of vernalization progress at temperature T, ToptandTmaxare the optimum and maximum temperatures for vernalization, respectively, andVmax is the maximum daily rate of vernalization(the inverse of the minimum number of days required to completevernalization), which occurs at Topt. The model was appliedto published vernalization data for wheat and carrot. The fitsto data were good (adjusted R2for wheat of 0.94, for carrot0.98), with estimatedTopt and Tmaxbeing 5.7±0.5 and 21.3±1.4°C, respectively, for wheat ‘Norin 27’ and 6.6±0.2and 14.1±0.3 °C for carrot ‘ Chantenay RedCored’. The estimated parameters, in particular the highTmaxfor wheat, were close to those reported using differentanalytical approaches. It was suggested that the function wouldbe useful for summarizing vernalization data, and that its usewould avoid the abrupt changes that are inevitable when differentlinear relationships are used for part of the overall response. It was also suggested the high Tmaxshould be taken into accountwhen interpreting data obtained with wheat grown under warmconditions. Phosphorus and nitrogen uptake capacities were assessed during36–58 d drying cycles to determine whether the abilityof sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.) to absorb these nutrientschanged as the roots were subjected to increasing levels ofwater stress. Water was withheld from mature plants in large(6 I) containers and the uptake capacity of excised roots insolution was determined as soil water potentials decreased from–0.03 MPa to –5.0 MPa. Phosphorus uptake rates of excised roots at given substrateconcentrations increased as preharvest soil water potentialsdecreased to –5.0 MPa. Vmax and Km also increased as soilwater potentials declined. Declining soil water potentials depressednitrogen uptake at set substrate concentrations, but uptakecapacity, calculated as the sum Vmax for both NH+4+NO3,did not change significantly with drying. The sum Vmax correlatedwith root nitrogen concentration. Root uptake capacity for nitrogen and phosphorus was extremelystable under severe water stress in this aridland shrub. Maintenanceof uptake capacity, coupled with a previously demonstrated abilityto conduct hydraulic lift, may enable A. tridentata better tomaintain nitrogen and phosphorus uptake as soil water availabilitydeclines. These mechanisms may be important in the ability ofA. tridentata to maintain growth, complete reproduction, andgain an advantage against competitors late in the season whenthe soil layers with higher nutrient availability are dry. The Km(CO2) ancl Vmax of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylaseand its protein ratio to total soluble protein from Oryza speciesincluding cultivars (25 varieties) and wild types (11 species,21 strains) were surveyed. Their variabilities among cultivarsof O. sativa were very small. The averages of the Km(CO2) andVmax values and the ratio of carboxylase to soluble protein, and their standard errors were 10.2?1.0µM, 1.72?0.13units.mg–1(pH 8.0 and 25?C) and 52?2%, respectively. However, some differencesseemed to exist based on genome constitution in the Oryza genus.RuBP carboxylases from the species with the AgAg genome, O.graberrima and O. breviligulate, exhibited low Km(CO2) values(8.0?0.8 µM). High Vmax was associated with the CC genome,O. eichingeri and O. officinalis (2.08?0.15 units.mg–1).A higher ratio of RuBP carboxylase protein to soluble proteinwas found for the AA genome, O. sativa and O. perennis. Barley (Hordeum vulgare L., cvs Golf, Mette, and Laevigatum)was grown under nitrogen limitation in solution culture untilnear maturity. Three different nitrogen addition regimes wereused: in the ‘HN’ culture the relative rate of nitrate-Naddition (RA) was 0·08 d–1 until day 48 and thendecreased stepwise to, finally, 0·005 d–1 duringgrain-filling; the ‘LN’ culture received 45% ofthe nitrogen added in HN; the ‘CN’ culture was maintainedat RA 0·0375 d–1 throughout. Kinetics of net nitrateuptake were measured during ontogeny at 30 to 150 mmol m–3external nitrate. Vmax (which is argued to reflect the maximuminflux rate in these plants) declined with age in both HN andLN cultures. A pronounced transient drop was observed just beforeanthesis, which correlated in time with a peak in root nitrateconcentration. Similar, but less pronounced, trends were observedin CN. The relative Vmax (unit nitrogen taken up per unit nitrogenin plants and day) in all three cultures declined from 1·3–2·3d–1 during vegetative growth to 0·1–0·7d–1 during generative growth. These values are in HN andLN cultures 15- to more than 100-fold in excess of the demandset by growth rates throughout ontogeny. Predicted balancingnitrate concentrations (defined as the nitrate concentrationrequired to support the observed rate of growth) were below6·0 mmol m–3 in HN and LN cultures before anthesisand then decreased during ontogeny. In CN cultures the balancingnitrate concentration increased during grain-filling. Apartfrom the transient decline during anthesis, most of the effectof ageing on relative Vmax can be explained in terms of reducedcontribution of roots to total biomass (R:T). The loss in uptakeper unit root weight is largely compensated for by the declinewith time in average tissue nitrogen concentrations. The quantitativerelationships between relative Vmax and R:T in ageing plantsare similar to those observed for vegetative plants culturedat different RAs. The data support the contention that the capacity for nitrateacquisition in N-limited plants is under general growth control, rather than controlled by specific regulation of the biochemicalpathway of nitrate assimilation. Pacemaker potentials were recorded in situ from myenteric interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC-MY) in the murine small intestine. The nature of the two components of pacemaker potentials (upstroke and plateau) were investigated and compared with slow waves recorded from circular muscle cells. Pacemaker potentials and slow waves were not blocked by nifedipine (3 µM). In the presence of nifedipine, mibefradil, a voltage-dependent Ca2+ channel blocker, reduced the amplitude, frequency, and rate of rise of upstroke depolarization (dV/dtmax) of pacemaker potentials and slow waves in a dose-dependent manner (1–30 µM). Mibefradil (30 µM) changed the pattern of pacemaker potentials from rapidly rising, high-frequency events to slowly depolarizing, low-frequency events with considerable membrane noise (unitary potentials) between pacemaker potentials. Caffeine (3 mM) abolished pacemaker potentials in the presence of mibefradil. Pinacidil (10 µM), an ATP-sensitive K+ channel opener, hyperpolarized ICC-MY and increased the amplitude and dV/dtmax without affecting frequency. Pinacidil hyperpolarized smooth muscle cells and attenuated the amplitude and dV/dtmax of slow waves without affecting frequency. The effects of pinacidil were blocked by glibenclamide (10 µM). These data suggest that slow waves are electrotonic potentials driven by pacemaker potentials. The upstroke component of pacemaker potentials is due to activation of dihydropyridine-resistant Ca2+ channels, and this depolarization entrains pacemaker activity to create the plateau potential. The plateau potential may be due to summation of unitary potentials generated by individual or small groups of pacemaker units in ICC-MY. Entrainment of unitary potentials appears to depend on Ca2+ entry during upstroke depolarization. pacemaker activity; slow waves; gastrointestinal motility; calcium channel  相似文献

The myosin heavy chain (MHC) andmyosin light chain (MLC) isoforms in skeletal muscle of Ranapipiens have been well characterized. We measured theforce-velocity (F-V) properties of single intact fast-twitchfibers from R. pipiens that contained MHC types 1 or 2 (MHC1or MHC2) or coexpressed MHC1 and MHC2 isoforms. Velocities weremeasured between two surface markers that spanned most of the fiberlength. MHC and MLC isoform content was quantified after mechanicsanalysis by SDS-PAGE. Maximal shortening velocity(Vmax) and velocity at half-maximal tension(VP 50) increased with percentage of MHC1(%MHC1). Maximal specific tension (Po/CSA, wherePo is isometric tension and CSA is fiber cross-sectional area) and maximal mechanical power (Wmax) alsoincreased with %MHC1. MHC concentration was not significantlycorrelated with %MHC1, indicating that the influence of %MHC1 onPo/CSA and Wmax was due to intrinsicdifferences between MHC isoforms and not to concentration. TheMLC3-to-MLC1 ratio was not significantly correlated withVmax, VP 50,Po/CSA, or Wmax. These data demonstrate the powerful relationship between MHC isoforms and F-V properties of the two most common R. pipiensfiber types.

We used a reconstituted fiber formed when 3T3fibroblasts are grown in collagen to characterize nonmusclecontractility and Ca2+ signaling. Calf serum (CS) andthrombin elicited reversible contractures repeatable for >8 h. CSelicited dose-dependent increases in isometric force; 30% produced thelargest forces of 106 ± 12 µN (n = 30), whichis estimated to be 0.5 mN/mm2 cell cross-sectionalarea. Half times for contraction and relaxation were 4.7 ± 0.3 and 3.1 ± 0.3 min at 37°C. With imposition of constant shortening velocities, force declined with time, yieldingtime-dependent force-velocity relations. Forces at 5 s fit thehyperbolic Hill equation; maximum velocity(Vmax) was 0.035 ± 0.002 Lo/s.Compliance averaged 0.0076 ± 0.0006 Lo/Fo. Disruption of microtubules with nocodazole in a CS-contracted fiber had no net effects on force, Vmax, or stiffness; force increased in 8, butdecreased in 13, fibers. Nocodazole did not affect baselineintracellular Ca2+ concentration([Ca2+]i) but reduced (~30%) the[Ca2+]i response to CS. The force afternocodazole treatment was the primary determinant of stiffness andVmax, suggesting that microtubules were not amajor component of fiber internal mechanical resistance. Cytochalasin Dhad major inhibitory effects on all contractile parameters measured butlittle effect on [Ca2+]i.

Millhouse, J. and Strother, S. 1987. Further characteristicsof salt-dependent bicarbonate use by the seagrass Zostera muelleri.—J.exp. Bot. 38: 1055–1068. The contribution of HCO3to photosynthetic O2 evolutionin the seagrass Zostera muelleri Irmisch ex Aschers. increasedwith increasing salinity of the bathing seawater when the inorganiccarbon concentration was kept constant. K1/2 (seawater salts)for HCO3 -dependent photosynthesis was 66% of seawatersalinity. Both short- and long-term pretreatment at low salinitiesstimulated photosynthesis in full strength seawater. Twentyfour hours pre-incubation of seagrass plants in 3·0 molm–3 NaHCO3 resulted in increased photosynthesis at allsalinities, apparently due to stimulation of HCO3 use(K1/2 (seawater salts) = 26%). Vmax (HCO3) was not affectedby low salinity pretreatment. The kinetics of HCO3 stimulationby the major seawater cations was investigated. Ca2+ was themost effective cation with the highest Vmax (HCO3) andwith K1/2(Ca2+) = 14 mol m–3. Mg2+ was also very effectiveat less than 50 mol m–3 but higher concentrations wereinhibitory. This inhibition cannot be accounted for solely byprecipitation of MgCO3. Na+ and K+ were both capable of stimulatingHCO3 use. Stimulation was in two distinct parts. Up to500 mol m–3, both citrate and chloride salts gave similarresults (K1/2(Na+) 81 mol m–3, Vmax(HCO3) 0·26µmol O2 mg–1 chl min–1), but use of citratesalts above 500 mol m–2 caused a second stimulation ofHCO3 use (K1/2(Na+) 830 mol m–3, Vmax(HCO3)0·68 µmol O2 mg–1 chl min–1). Vmax(HCO3)for the second-phase Na+ or K+ stimulation was of the same orderas for Ca2+-stimulated HCO3 use. To further characterizesalt-dependent HCO3 use, the sensitivity of photosynthesisto Tris and TES buffers was investigated. The effects of Trisappear to be due to the action of Tris+ causing stimulationof HCO3 -dependent photosynthesis in the absence of salt, but inhibition of HCO3 use in saline media. TES has noeffect on photosynthesis. External carbonic anhydrase, althoughimplicated in salt-dependent HCO3 use in Z. muelleri, could not be detected in whole leaves. The chemomechanicalcoupling mechanism in striated muscle contraction was examined bychanging the nucleotide substrate from ATP to CTP. Maximum shorteningvelocity [extrapolation to zero force from force-velocity relation(Vmax) andslope of slack test plots (V0)], maximumisometric force (Po), power, andthe curvature of the force-velocity curve[a/Po(dimensionless parameter inversely related to the curvature)] weredetermined during maximumCa2+-activated isotoniccontractions of fibers from fast rabbit psoas and slow rat soleusmuscles by using 0.2 mM MgATP, 4 mM MgATP, 4 mM MgCTP, or 10 mM MgCTPas the nucleotide substrate. In addition to a decrease in the maximumCa2+-activated force in both fibertypes, a change from 4 mM ATP to 10 mM CTP resulted in a decrease inVmax in psoasfibers from 3.26 to 1.87 muscle length/s. In soleus fibers,Vmax was reduced from 1.94 to 0.90 muscle length/s by this change in nucleotide. Surprisingly, peak power was unaffected in either fiber type by thechange in nucleotide as the result of a three- to fourfold decrease inthe curvature of the force-velocity relationship. The results areinterpreted in terms of the Huxley model of muscle contraction as anincrease in f1and g1 coupled toa decrease in g2(where f1 is therate of cross-bridge attachment and g1 andg2 are rates ofdetachment) when CTP replaces ATP. This adequately accounts for theobserved changes in Po,a/Po,and Vmax. However, the two-state Huxley model does not explicitly reveal thecross-bridge transitions that determine curvature of the force-velocityrelationship. We hypothesize that a nucleotide-sensitive transitionamong strong-binding cross-bridge states followingPi release, but before the release of the nucleotide diphosphate, underlies the alterations ina/Po reported here.

The aims of this paper was to modify the photosynthesis model of Farquhar, von Caemmerer and Berry (FvCB) to be able to predict light dependency of the carboxylation capacity (Vc) and to improve the prediction of temperature dependency of the maximum carboxylation capacity (Vcmax) and the maximum electron transport rate (Jmax). The FvCB model was modified by adding a sub-model for Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (Rubisco) activation and validating the parameters for temperature dependency of Vcmax and Jmax. Values of parameters for temperature dependency of Vcmax and Jmax were validated and adjusted based on data of the photosynthesis response to temperature. Parameter estimation was based on measurements under a wide range of environmental conditions, providing parameters with broad validity. The simultaneous estimation method and the nonlinear mixed effects model were applied to ensure the accuracy of the parameter estimation. The FvCB parameters, Vcmax, Jmax, α (the efficiency of light energy conversion), θ (the curvature of light response of electron transport), and Rd (the non-photorespiratory CO2 release) were estimated and validated on a dataset from two other years. Observations and predictions matched well (R2 = 0.94). We conclude that incorporating a sub-model of Rubisco activation improved the FvCB model through predicting light dependency of carboxylation rate; and that estimating Vcmax, Jmax, α, θ, and Rd requires data sets of both CO2 and light response curves.  相似文献

Temperature dependence of two parameters in a photosynthesis model   总被引:7,自引:2,他引:5
The temperature dependence of the photosynthetic parameters Vcmax, the maximum catalytic rate of the enzyme Rubisco, and Jmax, the maximum electron transport rate, were examined using published datasets. An Arrehenius equation, modified to account for decreases in each parameter at high temperatures, satisfactorily described the temperature response for both parameters. There was remarkable conformity in Vcmax and Jmax between all plants at Tleaf < 25 °C, when each parameter was normalized by their respective values at 25 °C (Vcmax0 and Jmax0), but showed a high degree of variability between and within species at Tleaf > 30 °C. For both normalized Vcmax and Jmax, the maximum fractional error introduced by assuming a common temperature response function is < ± 0·1 for most plants and < ± 0·22 for all plants when Tleaf < 25 °C. Fractional errors are typically < ± 0·45 in the temperature range 25–30 °C, but very large errors occur when a common function is used to estimate the photosynthetic parameters at temperatures > 30 °C. The ratio Jmax/Vcmax varies with temperature, but analysis of the ratio at Tleaf = 25 °C using the fitted mean temperature response functions results in Jmax0/Vcmax0 = 2·00 ± 0·60 (SD, n = 43).  相似文献

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) varieties differed in their raponseto [K+]0, in terms of their utilization efficiencies (UE = freshweight. concentration of [K+]1–1). At low [K+]0, Compana,an efficient-non-responder demonstrated superior utilizationof absorbed K+. On the other hand, at high [K+]0, Fergus (anefficient responder) and BT 334 (an inefficient responder) hadhigher UE values for K+ than Compana which performed poorlyat this [K+]0. Kinetic parameters for K+ activation of the enzyme pyruvatekinase from 12 barley varieties, representing a range of UEvalues, were determined. Varieties showed substantial differencesin their Vmax values (P<0·01). Compana, an efficientvariety, had the highest Vmax (31 µmol g–1 freshwt. h–1) which was about 50% higher than that of Mingo,an inefficient variety. By contrast, Km values for the enzymeswere not significantly different among varieties The mean valuesfor all varieties (3·9±0·15 mol m–3K+) is far below the estimated cytoplasmic [K+] (100-200 molm–3). It is, therefore, unlikely that differences in theutilization of K+ by these varieties can be explained on thebasis of differential requirements for (K+) activation of theseenzymes. Alternative possibilities for differences in the utilizationof K+ are discussed. Key words: K+ utilization efficiency, Pyruvate kinase, Barley varieties  相似文献

The lacustrine blue-green alga (= Cyanobacterium) Oscillatoriarubescens D.C. was cultured in chemostats with temperature andlight intensity as the only limiting factors. The experimentswere carried out under combinations of three temperatures 10,20 and 30°C and three irradiances 6, 18 and 30 µEm–2 s–1. Dilution rate, photosynthesis rate anda large number of abiotic and cellular factors were regularlymeasured to determine steady-state periods and the level ofthe associated variables. Various mathematical models were fittedwith series of data by a non-linear regression method derivedfrom Marquardt's method. Four models for calculation of specificgrowth rate and photosynthesis rate are presented. The lastone computes growth rate from calculated photosynthesis: µ= µmax pmaxI/[KpKi + I(Kp + Pmax)], with Pmax =100 + 257Tand K1 = 300/chl a. Values of adjusted parameters are discussed. One conclusion confirms that values of maximal growth ratesand half-saturation constants frequently considered in the literatureas absolute species characteristics should always be consideredas relative to associated prevalent growth conditions.  相似文献

Responses of photosynthesis (A) to intercellular CO2 concentration (ci) in 2-year-old Pinus radiata D. Don seedlings were measured at a range of temperatures in order to parametrize a biophysical model of leaf photosynthesis. Increasing leaf temperature from 8 to 30°C caused a 4-fold increase in Vcmax, the maximum rate of carboxylation (10.7–43.3 μol m?2 s?1 and a 3-fold increase in Jmax, the maximum electron transport rate (20.5–60.2 μmol m ?2 s?1). The temperature optimum for Jmax was lower than that for Vcmax, causing a decline in the ratio Jmax:Vcmax from 2.0 to 1.4 as leaf temperature increased from 8 to 30°C. To determine the response of photosynthesis to leaf nitrogen concentration, additional measurements were made on seedlings grown under four nitrogen treatments. Foliar N concentrations varied between 0.36 and 1.27 mol kg?1, and there were linear relationships between N concentration and both Vcmax and Jmax. Measurements made throughout the crown of a plantation forest tree, where foliar N concentrations varied from 0.83 mol kg?1 near the base to 1.54 mol kg?1 near the leader, yielded similar relationships. These results will be useful in scaling carbon assimilation models from leaves to canopies.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the acclimation of photosynthesis in a boreal grass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) grown in controlled environment chambers under elevated temperature (ambient + 3.5°C) and CO2 (700 μmol mol−1) with varying soil water regimes. More specifically, we studied, during two development stages (early: heading; late: florescence completed), how the temperature response of light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (P sat), maximum rate of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase activity (V cmax) and potential rate of electron transport (J max) acclimatized to the changed environment. During the early growing period, we found a greater temperature-induced enhancement of P sat at higher measurement temperatures, which disappeared during the late stage. Under elevated growth temperature, V cmax and J max at lower measurement temperatures (5–15°C) were lower than those under ambient growth temperature during the early period. When the measurements were done at 20–30°C, the situation was the opposite. During the late growing period, V cmax and J max under elevated growth temperature were consistently lower across measurement temperatures. CO2 enrichment significantly increased P sat with higher intercellular CO2 compared to ambient CO2 treatment, however, elevated CO2 slightly decreased V cmax and J max across measurement temperatures, probably due to down-regulation acclimation. For two growing periods, soil water availability affected the variation in photosynthesis and biochemical parameters much more than climatic treatment did. Over two growing periods, V cmax and J max were on average 36.4 and 30.6%, respectively, lower with low water availability compared to high water availability across measurement temperatures. During the late growing period, elevated growth temperature further reduced the photosynthesis under low water availability. V cmax and J max declined along with the decrease in nitrogen content of leaves as growing period progressed, regardless of climatic treatment and water regime. We suggest that, for grass species, seasonal acclimation of the photosynthetic parameters under varying environmental conditions needed to be identified to fairly estimate the whole-life photosynthesis.  相似文献

A key weakness in current Earth System Models is the representation of thermal acclimation of photosynthesis in response to changes in growth temperatures. Previous studies in boreal and temperate ecosystems have shown leaf‐scale photosynthetic capacity parameters, the maximum rates of carboxylation (Vcmax) and electron transport (Jmax), to be positively correlated with foliar nitrogen (N) content at a given reference temperature. It is also known that Vcmax and Jmax exhibit temperature optima that are affected by various environmental factors and, further, that N partitioning among the foliar photosynthetic pools is affected by N availability. However, despite the strong recent anthropogenic influence on atmospheric temperatures and N deposition to forests, little is known about the role of foliar N contents in controlling the photosynthetic temperature responses. In this study, we investigated the temperature dependencies of Vcmax and Jmax in 1‐year‐old needles of mature boreal Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine) trees growing under low and high N availabilities in northern Sweden. We found that needle N status did not significantly affect the temperature responses of Vcmax or Jmax when the responses were fitted to a peaked function. If such N insensitivity is a common tree trait it will simplify the interpretation of the results from gradient and multi‐species studies, which commonly use sites with differing N availabilities, on temperature acclimation of photosynthetic capacity. Moreover, it will simplify modeling efforts aimed at understanding future carbon uptake by precluding the need to adjust the shape of the temperature response curves to variation in N availability.  相似文献
