We assessed patterns of new queen recruitment in a polygyne(multiple
queens per nest) population of the fire ant Solenopsisinvicta in its
introduced range. Newly recruited queens wereidentified using four
physiological markers, and genotypic datafrom nuclear and mitochondrial
markers were used to estimaterelatedness of new nest mate queens to each
other and to theolder nest mate queens. In total, 1.7% of the queens
collectedin late spring and early summer were deemed to be new recruits. The
relatedness of these queens to each other and to the olderqueens within nests
was not significantly different from zero, suggesting that newly recruited
queens represent a random sampleof potential reproductive queens in the
population. Moreover, the number of new queens recruited within nests was not
correlatedwith the number of older queens present and did not differ
significantlyfrom a Poisson distribution. Thus, queen recruitment in this
populationof S. invicta appears to occur at random with respect to
thenumber of older queens present within nests. 相似文献

Supercolonies of the red fire ant Solenopsis saevissima (Smith) develop in disturbed environments and likely alter the ant community in the native range of the species. For example, in French Guiana only 8 ant species were repeatedly noted as nesting in close vicinity to its mounds. Here, we verified if a shared set of biological, ecological, and behavioral traits might explain how these 8 species are able to nest in the presence of S. saevissima. We did not find this to be the case. We did find, however, that all of them are able to live in disturbed habitats. It is likely that over the course of evolution each of these species acquired the capacity to live syntopically with S. saevissima through its own set of traits, where colony size (4 species develop large colonies), cuticular compounds which do not trigger aggressiveness (6 species) and submissive behaviors (4 species) complement each other. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Trophallactic behaviour of temporal subcastes in Solenopsis invicta Buren colonies was studied in two separate experiments. First, radiolabeled honey was presented to small colonies containing larvae, queens and marked workers; radioactivity in the head, thorax and abdomen of each ant was measured after 0.25, 1, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h. The quantity of honey per subcaste was dependent on the total amount of honey collected. As more honey entered the colony, the quantity in foragers, queens and reserves increased more rapidly than that in nurses or larvae. The internal distribution of radioactivity in the head, thorax or abdomen indicated that differences between subcaste members in either the rate of food exchange or digestion existed. In a second experiment behavioural observations were made on marked workers in colonies before and after the presentation of honey. Reserves spent significantly more time engaged in trophallaxis than either foragers or nurses, both as active donors and active receivers. Based on number of encounters, nurses were more likely to receive honey while reserves and foragers were more likely to donate honey. The duration of encounters involving nurses tended to be shorter than those involving reserves or foragers. 相似文献

The red imported fire ant,Solenopsis invicta, modifies predation at the soil surface and in cotton foliage 下载免费PDF全文
Red imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta, are generalist predators that can have major impacts on foliar arthropod communities in agricultural systems; however, their effects as predators at the soil surface have not been adequately characterized. We examined the contribution of fire ants to predation at the soil surface and in cotton foliage at two sites and over the course of two field seasons in Georgia, using egg masses of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua. To assess interactions between fire ants and other arthropod species, we also measured the densities of edaphic predators and honeydew‐producing hemipterans at both sites. The sites occurred in different growing regions (Piedmont and Coastal Plain), and allowed us to characterize the importance of fire ants as predators under different climatic and soil conditions. Fire ant suppression decreased egg predation at both field sites, and predation by fire ants at the soil surface was equal to if not greater than that in cotton foliage. However, the impact of fire ants on predation varied between sites, likely due to differences in climate and the composition and activity of the extant arthropod communities. Our study also indicates that fire ant suppression is associated with decreases in the density of honeydew‐producing insects, and increasing abundance of whiteflies on the plants coincided with a decrease in egg predation at the soil surface. This finding suggests the mutualism between ants and whiteflies may lead to a shift in predation intensity from edaphic towards plant‐based food webs. 相似文献

Colonies of the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, can survive flood conditions by forming a raft of ants that floats on the water’s surface until the flood recedes or higher
ground is found. Having been forced from the protection of their subterranean nests, rafting colonies are totally exposed
and are without retreat. I tested the hypothesis that rafting S. invicta colonies would compensate for their elevated vulnerability by increasing their defensiveness. I measured defensiveness using
the amount of venom workers delivered per sting (venom dose), since the repellent effects (i.e., pain and tissue damage) of
fire-ant venom are dose-dependent. In the laboratory I assayed colony defensiveness before and after flooding colonies from
their nests with water. Colonies were consistently and significantly more defensive while rafting (i.e., each colony’s workers
delivered higher venom doses when their colony was rafting than they did when it was assayed pre-flood). The larger venom
doses of rafting colonies may reduce their chances of being damaged by encounters with other animals by reducing the duration
of such encounters through increased repellency. Encounters with S. invicta during flood conditions have the potential to be unusually dangerous; large concentrations of workers are exposed and available
for defense, and they deliver significantly larger venom doses when they sting.

Intraspecific variation in social organization is common, yet the underlying causes are rarely known. An exception is the fire ant Solenopsis invicta in which the existence of two distinct forms of social colony organization is under the control of the two variants of a pair of social chromosomes, SB and Sb. Colonies containing exclusively SB/SB workers accept only one single queen and she must be SB/SB. By contrast, when colonies contain more than 10% of SB/Sb workers, they accept several queens but only SB/Sb queens. The variants of the social chromosome are associated with several additional important phenotypic differences, including the size, fecundity and dispersal strategies of queens, aggressiveness of workers, and sperm count in males. However, little is known about whether social chromosome variants affect fitness in other life stages. Here, we perform experiments to determine whether differential selection occurs during development and in adult workers. We find evidence that the Sb variant of the social chromosome increases the likelihood of female brood to develop into queens and that adult SB/Sb workers, the workers that cull SB/SB queens, are overrepresented in comparison to SB/SB workers. This demonstrates that supergenes such as the social chromosome can have complex effects on phenotypes at various stages of development. 相似文献

Behaviour of worker subcastes in the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, in response to proteinaceous food
ABSTRACT. The effects of division of labour on response behaviour to food in the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, were examined to determine if caste members differ in amount of food taken, in rate of food transfer, or in internal distribution of food; and to see if food availability, time, or temporal subcaste pairing affect feeding behaviour. To measure differences in behaviour we fed radioiodinated albumin mixed with egg yolk to colonies containing larvae, queens, and (a) foragers and nurses, or (b) foragers and reserves, or (c) nurses and reserves. Samples were taken over a 72-h period and radioactivity in the head, thorax and abdomen of each worker was determined. There were significant differences between nurses, foragers and reserves in quantity of food consumed, rate of transfer, and internal distribution of radioactivity. These differences were related to their respective roles of foraging, food storage and transfer, and brood tending. The quantity of food taken per subcaste was dependent on the total amount of food in the colony, with transfer rates differing between subcastes as the quantity of food in the colony increased. The rate at which protein was transferred between subcastes was slower in the reserves than that in either foragers or nurses. Therefore, reserves may serve as a temporary store of protein for the colony. 相似文献

In this study, conducted in French Guiana, a part of the native range of the fire ant Solenopsis saevissima, we compared the cuticular hydrocarbon profiles of media workers with previous results based on intraspecific aggressiveness tests. We noted a strong congruence between the two studies permitting us to delimit 2 supercolonies extending over large distances (up to 54 km), a phenomenon known as unicoloniality. Solenopsis geminata workers, taken as an out‐group for cluster analyses, have a very different cuticular hydrocarbon profile. Because S. saevissima has been reported outside its native range, our conclusion is that this species has the potential to become invasive because unicoloniality (i.e., the main attribute for ants to become invasive) was shown at least for the Guianese population. 相似文献

Effects of Wolbachia on mtDNA variation in two fire ant species 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Wolbachia are endosymbiotic bacteria that infect arthropods. As they are maternally transmitted, the spread of Wolbachia variants within host populations may affect host mtDNA evolution. We sequenced a portion of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene from numerous individuals of two Wolbachia-infected fire ant species, Solenopsis invicta and S. richteri, to determine how these bacteria influence patterns of mtDNA variation. As predicted, there was a strong association between Wolbachia strain and host mtDNA lineage within and between these fire ant species. However, there was no consistent association between the presence of Wolbachia and a reduction in mtDNA diversity. Moreover, patterns of mtDNA variation within Wolbachia-infected populations did not differ consistently from neutral expectations, despite our prediction that strong positive selection acting on Wolbachia influences the evolutionary dynamics of other cytoplasmic genomes. Specifically, while values of Tajima's D consistently were less than zero for all six samples of fire ants harbouring Wolbachia, MacDonald-Kreitman tests suggested that the patterns of variation were different from those expected under neutrality in only two of the samples. We conclude that these neutrality tests do not unambiguously reveal a clear effect of Wolbachia infection on patterns of mtDNA variation and substitution in fire ants. Finally, consistent with an earlier study, our data revealed the presence of two divergent mtDNA haplotype lineages and Wolbachia strains within S. invicta. Recognition of these two lineages has important consequences for interpreting patterns of mtDNA evolution and genetic differentiation between conspecific social forms of this species. 相似文献

Alternative models of territoriality are based on contrastingassumptions about the behavioral processes determining territorysize. In a series of controlled field experiments on the fireant Solenopsis invicta, I tested whether territory size is affectedby the availability of food, as predicted by most economic models, and whether territory size is affected by fighting ability,as predicted by models of competition among neighbors. Abundantfood was offered for 3035 days to selected colonies eitherimmediately next to the nest (experiment 1) or at peripheralsites near the territory boundary (experiment 2). These foodsupplements had no detectable effect on territory size. Furthermore, food placed near the periphery of the territory did not significantlyalter local boundary positions. During both experiments, largecolonies lost more territory than did small colonies, reflectingtemporary declines in worker number due to the seasonal productionof reproductives. Such losses by large colonies during the summermonths create opportunities for newly founded colonies to expandterritories. In a third experiment, colonies from which workerswere removed lost significantly more territory than did unmanipulatedcontrols. These results show that territory areas in S. invictaare strongly affected by the relative fighting ability of neighboringcolonies but provide no evidence that colonies adjust territoryarea in response to short-term changes in the availability offood. 相似文献

Abstract.— Recent studies of the introduced fire ant Solenopsis invicta suggest that introduced polygyne (with multiple queens per nest) populations are strongly influenced by male-mediated gene flow from neighboring monogyne (single queen per nest) populations and selection acting on a single locus, general protein-9 (Gp-9) . This investigation formally tests this hypothesis and determines if these processes can account for the genotypic structure of polygyne S. invicta . To increase the statistical power of this test, we considered the genotypes of polygyne queens and workers at both Gp-9 and the closely linked, selectively neutral locus Pgm-3 . We then constructed and analyzed a novel mathematical model to delimit the effects of monogyne male gene flow and selection on the joint genotypes at the Pgm-3/Gp-9 superlocus. Using this framework, a hierarchical maximum-likelihood method was developed to estimate the best-fitting gene flow and selection parameters based on the fit of our model to data from both the current study and an earlier one of the same population. In each case, selection on polygyne queens and workers alone, with no monogyne male gene flow, provides the most parsimonious explanation for the observed genotype frequencies. The apparent discrepancy between this result and the empirical evidence for monogyne male gene flow indicates that undocumented factors, such as other forms of selection in polygyne males or workers, are operating in introduced polygyne S. invicta . 相似文献

The fire ant Solenopsis invicta exists in two social forms, one with colonies headed by a single reproductive queen (monogyne form) and the other with colonies containing multiple queens (polygyne form). This variation in social organization is associated with variation at the gene Gp-9, with monogyne colonies harboring only the B allelic variant and polygyne colonies containing b-like variants as well. We generated new Gp-9 sequences from 15 Solenopsis species and combined these with previously published sequences to conduct a comprehensive, phylogenetically based study of the molecular evolution of this important gene. The exon/intron structure and the respective lengths of the five exons of Gp-9 are identical across all species examined, and we detected no evidence for intragenic recombination. These data conform to a previous suggestion that Gp-9 lies in a genomic region with low recombination, and they indicate that evolution of the coding region in Solenopsis has involved point substitutions only. Our results confirm a link between the presence of b-like alleles and the expression of polygyny in all South American fire ant species known to possess colonies of both social forms. Moreover, phylogenetic analyses show that b-like alleles comprise a derived clade of Gp-9 sequences within the socially polymorphic species, lending further support to the hypothesis that monogyny preceded polygyny in this group of fire ants. Site-specific maximum likelihood tests identified several amino acids that have experienced positive selection, two of which are adjacent to the inferred binding-pocket residues in the GP-9 protein. Four other binding-pocket residues are variable among fire ant species, although selection is not implicated in this variation. Branch-specific tests revealed strong positive selection on the stem lineage of the b-like allele clade, as expected if selection drove the amino acid replacements crucial to the expression of polygyne social organization. Such selection may have operated via the ligand-binding properties of GP-9, as one of the two amino acids uniquely shared by all b-like alleles is predicted to be a binding-pocket residue. 相似文献

We have characterized 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci in the invasive ant Solenopsis invicta. Primer pairs were evaluated on fire ants collected from monogyne mounds in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. The observed and effective number of alleles ranged from two to six and from 1.31 to 2.64, respectively. The observed and expected heterozygosity values ranged from 0.1613 to 0.7826 and from 0.1491 to 0.6242, respectively. The polymorphism information content of the microsatellites ranged from 0.1482 to 0.6208. Probability tests indicated significant deviations from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium at three loci. Pairwise tests did not detect linkage disequilibrium between any pair of loci. 相似文献

Protein, carbohydrate and lipid amounts were determined for several rotifer species collected directly from the field. Brachionus calyciflorus was the most abundant species; therefore making possible more data for it. An increase in protein content of this species occurred when its concentration in food (µg protein/ml) also increased. Keratella tropica showed a similar pattern, but Asplanchna brightwelli did not.Carbohydrate proved to be the main form of storage in rotifers. In Brachionus calyciflorus females bearing no egg, 8% of the total biomass was carbohydrate; in females bearing one egg, 15% carbohydrate was found. Lipid does not appear to be used for storage since no increase in the amount of lipid was detected in females bearing eggs or embryos. This suggests that lipid has a structural function. Finally, a relationship between rotifer body volume and protein content at a given food concentration was obtained. The cladoceran Daphnia magna follows the same pattern. 相似文献

Newly produced queens from monogyne (single-queen) coloniesof the ant Solenopsis invicta usually initiate reproductionindependently, that is, without worker assistance. However, some recently mated queens attempt to bypass this risky phaseof new colony foundation by entering established nests to reproduce, although it is unclear how often these queens are successfulin natural populations. We surveyed a mature monogyne populationof S. invicta in both 1995 and 1996 for colonies headed by queensincapable of independent colony founding (diploid-male-producingqueens) in order to estimate the frequency of colonies thatare headed by queens that initiated reproduction within establishednests (adopted queens). Using the frequency of diploid-male-producingqueens among the recently mated queens in this population, weestimated that the overall rate of queen replacement by adoptedqueens is about 0.7% per colony per year. Although theory suggeststhat a change to a novel queen reproductive tactic could beassociated with a fundamental change in social organization(queen number), this does not appear to be the case in monogyneS. invicta. However, the evolution of nest-infiltrating reproductivetactics by queens in a monogyne population and the evolutionof multiple-queen societies may result from similar ecologicalpressures facing newly mated queens. We therefore incorporatethis strategy into an existing theoretical framework that wasdeveloped to explain the evolution of alternative social organizationsin ants, providing testable predictions regarding the distributionand frequency of queen adoption in other single-queen ant societies. 相似文献

Intraspecific usurpation of incipient fire ant colonies 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Brood raiding, or reciprocal stealing of brood, is common amongincipient colonies of the fire ant Solenopsis invicta. Paradoxically, workers from a colony that loses its brood during a raid oftenabandon their nest and join the winning colony. Queens abandonedby their workers may then migrate from their original nest siteand attempt to forcefully usurp another incipient colony bydisplacing that colony's queen or queens. This study examinedfactors that influence the success of usurpation attempts. Queensattempting to usurp a nearby colony after laboratory brood raidswere successful in less than 30% of trials. Usurpation attemptswere more successful if workers familiar to the migrating queenwere present in the nest, as would happen if a queen were tofind the colony to which her workers had moved. Cross-fosteringexperiments showed that this effect was due to familiarity ratherthan relatedness. Usurpation attempts were less successful ifthey were delayed by 16 h. The probability of usurpation successwas not reduced by doubling the number of defending workersin the invaded colony. However, colonies founded by three queenswere almost always able to resist usurpation attempts. Theseresults support the hypothesis that workers abandon their natalcolony after losing a brood raid to increase the likelihoodthat their queen can usurp the colony to which they migrate. These results also provide the first evidence that coloniesof ants founded by several queens are better able to resistusurpation attempts than colonies founded by a single queen 相似文献

Management of imported fire ant species has evolved since their accidental introduction into the United States and currently uses integrated pest management concepts to design, implement, and evaluate suppression programs. Although eradication is the management goal in certain isolated infestation sites, localized goals vary dramatically in larger infestations where reinvasion of treated areas is likely. These goals are influenced by regulatory policies, medical liabilities, ecological impact, and/or economic considerations. Tactics employed in fire ant management programs presented here include cultural and biological control options along with judicious use of site‐specific insecticide products. In addition, program design considerations that include management goal(s), action level(s), ant form (monogyne or polygyne), presence of nontarget ant species, size of treatment area, seasonality, implementation cost, and environmental impact are also presented. Optimally, elegant IPM programs are target specific, threshold driven, environmentally friendly and cost‐effective. 相似文献
