The biology of the arrhenotokous autoparasitoid,Encarsia pergandiella Howard, was studied in the laboratory on the silverleaf whitefly,Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring. Egg to adult development of parasitoid females averaged ca. 14 days at about 25.3+0.2?C regardless of whether the whitefly host was reared on tomato, eggplant or squash. While all instars ofB. argentifolii were accepted for primary parasitization, a greater percentage of third and fourth instars were parasitized. Mortality of whitefly nymphs in the absence of parasitization did not differ among instars and averaged about 35%. Second instar to pupal parasitoid females were accepted for secondary parasitization although a greater percent of pupal females were parasitized. About 40% of immatureE. pergandiella females more than 4 days old died in the absence of secondary parasitization when exposed to adultE. pergandiella females.  相似文献

Abstract. A new species in the cephalaspidean family Diaphanidae, Toledonia warenella n. sp., is described from New South Wales, Australia. Three-dimensional, computer-aided reconstructions of the anatomy, based on serial histological sections, show that T. warenella n. sp. has some features in common with other diaphanids, including lack of jaws, gizzard plates, or an operculum. A gill was not detected in the mantle cavity, which is dominated by large, triangular, opposed ciliary bands and a kidney with lobed edges. The buccal mass is large with thick, muscular walls, perhaps indicative of a suctorial feeding behavior. Comparison with other diaphanid genera was hindered by lack of detailed published anatomical data, but shell and radula morphology suggests a close relationship between the new species and the polar genera Toledonia and Bogasonia (members of Toledoniinae), and for this reason, it is provisionally included in Toledonia. The systematics of Diaphanidae are addressed in the light of the anatomical data presented here.  相似文献

Hummingbird pollination is documented for a natural population ofStenorrhynchos lanceolatus Aublet. L. C. Rich. occurring in Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil. At the study site the plants are pollinated byPhaethornis eurynome (Phaethorninae),Thalurania glaucopis (females only) andLeucochloris albicollis (Trochilinae). The plants offer nectar as a reward and the pollinaria become stuck to the surface of the hummingbird's bill while it is probing the flowers. The orchid population received a few (0–4) hummingbird visits per day, with about 83% of the flowers being pollinated. In spite of the low frequency of visits, the granular structure of the pollinarium plus the behaviour of the most frequent pollinators, which tend to visit all the fresh-looking flowers of each inflorescence, a very high fruiting success was promoted. Experimental evidence suggests that the pollinaria may remain up to 6.30 hours on the hummingbird's bill, enhancing the chances of cross-pollination and long-distance pollen flow.  相似文献

Hylema sp. 5 females oviposit on the undersides of sepals of developing buds of both Ipomopsis aggregata and Polemonium foliosissimum. Eggs deposited on the latter are significantly more likely to be fully protected by the sepal than are eggs deposited on the former. Unexposed eggs have a significantly greater likelihood of successfully developing to the larval stage than do exposed eggs. The difference in frequency of egg exposure on the two plant species can be attributed to differences in sepal morphology: I. aggregata sepals are significantly narrower than those of P. foliosissimum. The hypothesis that females preferentially oviposit on larger flowers was unconfirmed by a manipulative choice experiment. Plants differing in the size of their flowers were potted together and presented to Hylemya in arrays in the field. Flowers of the larger-flowered pair were no more likely to be oviposited on than flowers of the smaller-flowered pair. However, there were significant negative correlations between the corolla length and the percentage of flowers laid on per day at each of two sites. There was also a significant positive correlation between the corolla width and the percentage of flowers laid on at one site. Thus females appear to be using some measure of flower morphology, or a correlated trait, in making oviposition decisions. The degree to which Hylemya is making suboptimal choices between host plant species is discussed and requires further examination.  相似文献

The entire life cycle of the Brazilian Echinostoma luisreyi n. sp., of the 37-collar spine E. revolutum group, has been observed under experimental conditions. The snail Physa marmorata serves as its first natural intermediate host. This species and the planorbid Biomplalaria glabrata act as experimental second intermediate hosts. The worm recovery rate was 51.3 and 0.6% for mice and hamsters, respectively, but the infection did not develop in the quail Coturnix coturnix. The natural vertebrate host is not known. The most important morphological character of the new species separating it from the other Echinostoma species studied is the oral corner spines that increase in size from the latero-oral to the ventro-oral regions. The ratio of the sizes of the smaller oral spines and the larger aboral ones was 1.7:1.0. Also, the excretory pore is radially wrinkled and dorsally subterminal. Images obtained by scanning electron microscopy confirmed the characters that differentiate the new species and the most closely related species.  相似文献

Heliconema minnanensis n. sp. is described from the Chiloscyllium plagiosum south of the Minnan-Taiwan Bank Fishing Ground, Taiwan Strait. It is characterized by having the following combination of features. There are no longitudinal ridges in the posterior part of the body; the male has 4 pairs of precloacal papillae and 6-7 pairs of postcloacal papillae. The right spicule averages 0.2 mm long (1.1% of body length), and the left spicule averages 1.2 mm long (5.6% of body length), making an average spicule ratio of 1:5.2. The female has a vulva located on the left side of a thick membrane and 56-65% of the body length from the anterior end. Raphidascaris trichiuri (Yin and Zhang, 1983) comb. n., known previously from males only, is transferred from Cloeoascaris and redescribed, including material of both sexes from Muraenesox cinereus from the type locality.  相似文献

The role of mussels in cycling phosphorus in Lake St. Clair during the May–October period was examined by measuring concentrations in the water column and in mussel tissue, and by measuring rates of biodeposition and excretion. Mean rates of biodeposition and excretion for Lampsilis radiata siliquoidea, the most abundant species, were 6.3 µg P (g shell-free dry wt)-1 h-1 and 1.3 µg P (g shell-free dry wt)-1 h-1, respectively; body tissue phosphorus content was 2.7 percent of dry wt. Seasonal changes in excretion rates appeared to be related to the gametogenic cycle of the organism, but seasonal changes in biodeposition rates were not apparent. Phosphorus assimilation efficiency for this species was about 40 percent. Overall, the mussel population in Lake St. Clair filtered about 210 MT of phosphorus, or about 13.5 percent of the total phosphorus load for the May–October study period. Of this amount, about 134 MT was sedimented to the bottom via biodeposition. Mussel biodeposition may be an important source of nutrients to other biotic components in the lake such as macrophytes and invertebrate deposit-feeders.  相似文献

Observations on the mating system of the midge,Tokunagayusurika akamusi, revealed mating to occur both in the air by swarming and on the ground by searching. At the shores of Lake Biwa, midges appeared from November to early December. Newly emerged adults arrived at the resting place, lakeside vegetation, in the morning, during which time a number of males also walked about in search of mates. Many copulating pairs were observed at the resting place. Huge swarms occurred chiefly before sunset but the frequency of copulation observed in the swarm was extremely low. It is likely that, in the Lake Biwa population, the proportion of females inseminated by searching males at the resting place was much larger than that by swarming males in the air. Furthermore, by searching, males copulated with younger females than by swarming. The differences between the searching and swarming tactics are discussed.  相似文献
