A quantitative comparison was conducted on the foliage development during sporophyte development of three allopatric ferns in cool temperate and subalpine regions of Hokkaido and Tirol, European Alps. The foliage development ofDryopteris crassirhizoma, D. coreano-montana andD. filix-mas was quantitatively described by the leaf development (NV, number of veins); NV correlates the leaf-shape complexity from a circle (DI, L/2(3.14×S)1/2). Nearly similar patterns were detected on frequency distribution of fertile leaves, fertility increase and number of leaves in threeDryopteris ferns which exhibit funnel-shaped foliage arrangements in mature sporophyte. No difference was found in number of leaves, maximum NV, fertility rate and leaf-shape parameters among three ferns. A positive difference was found only on changes in order of pinnae with maximum number of costa branches (NVP) and the DI of outline of pinnae betweenD. crassirhizoma andD. filix-mas. These allopatricDryopteris ferns seem to have a similar foliage structure, in spite of some sympatricDryopteris ferns capable of producing putative hybrids (D. austriaca andD. amurensis; D. tokyoensis andD. monticola) having different foliage structures in Hokkaido. Seven species ofArachniodes from Japan and the Philippines were examined for phloroglucinol derivatives and glandularity of rhizome and petiole bases. For comparison 3 species ofDryopteris, 2 species ofNothoperanema, 3 species ofPolystichum, 1 species ofAcrophorus and 2 species ofCtenitis were investigated as well. Phloroglucinol derivatives were detected for the first time in the following taxa:Arachniodes assamica, A. cavalerii, A. tripinnata, A. yasu-inouei, Dryopteris pulvinulifera, D. cochleata, Polystichum rigens, Acrophorus nodosus, Ctenitis setosa andC. subglandulosa. The phloroglucinols ofDryopteris, Arachniodes andPolystichum are structurally related in agreement with the taxonomic relationships of these genera. On the other hand, the less related generaAcrophorus andCtenitis contain several unknown phloroglucinols not identical with those occurring in the former genera. The phloroglucinol containing species ofArachniodes, Polystichum, Acrophorus andCtenitis contain external glands, whereasDryopteris pulvinulifera andD. cochleata have both internal and external glands. The species of the genusNothoperanema seem to completely lack phloroglucinols and glands. The phloroglucinol composition of most taxa investigated is almost constant except for that inArachnoides amabilis and its varieties,A. aristata (A. exilis) andPolystichum tsus-simense. An intra-species comparison of the life history of various populations ofPolystichum tripteron was undertaken in Hokkaido and Honshu in Japan with respect to some leaf-size characters and fertility during sporophyte development. The developmental process of sporophytes was quantitatively estimated by counting the number of venation (NV: number of midrib branches of the leaf). The mean NV of the fertile leaves decreased slightly with increasing altitude on Mt. Teine near Sapporo and with increasing latitudes from Honshu to Hokkaido. The blade length was longer at any NV in Hokkaido populations than in those of southern Honshu. Longer blade (BL) and pinna length (PL) and lesser number of pinnules of the lowest pinna (NPLP) versus NV were observed in leaf populations from Hokkaido than in those from southern Honshu. The maximum values of lowest pinna length (LPL), NV, number of costa branches (NVLP) and number of pinnule (NPLP) were larger in southern Honshu than in Hokkaido. In the course of leaf-shape formation represented by the ratio of PL to BL versus NV, the Kyoto population seemed to be more differentiated into long-lanceolate fronds than did the Hokkaido population. Initiation of fertility in the sporophyte development and the maximum NV seemed to decrease with increasing altitudes and latitudes in Japan. We studied the initial regenerative processes ofDistylium racemosum andPersea thunbergii, major canopy species, in an old-growth evergreen broad-leaved forest, Kagoshima, southwestern Japan. Although the two species coexisted, the patterns of seed production, seedling emergence, and sapling survival were different between them. During the observation (1989–1991),P. thunbergii produced large numbers of seeds in alternate years, whileD. racemosum had no mast year. The density of established seedlings was high and increased with mass seed production forP. thunbergii, but was fairly low forD. racemosum. The mortality of seedlings and saplings ofP. thunbergii was higher than that ofD. racemosum. In a closed stand, the sapling bank was maintained by dense seedling supply forP. thunbergii, and by extremely low mortality of individuals germinated before the beginning of observation forD. racemosum. Since saplings ofD. racemosum showed continuous height growth beneath the closed canopy, the possibility of recruitment into the upper layer seems to be high. The strategy ofP. thunbergii might be to wait for suitable conditions favoring sapling growth on various site by means of frequent and large seed productivity and wide dispersal of seeds. We describe 11 new pteridophyte species belonging to various families from Bolivia: Dennstaedtiaceae:Hypolepis, scandens, Hypolepis minima; Pteridaceae:Cheilanthes glutinosa, Eriosorus angustus, E. ascendens, E. madidiensis; Tectariaceae:Tectaria jimenezii; and Woodsiaceae:Athyrium latinervatum. Diplazium bipinnatum, D. bolivianum, D. yuyoense. The following new combinations are proposed:Anemia australis, Diplazium andicola, D. andinum, andD. petiolulatum.Polystichum maximum is proposed as a new name forPolystichum giganteum.  相似文献

TwoApium graveolens var.rapaceum (L.) cultivars that differ in their suitability for the survival and growth ofSpodoptera exigua (Hübner) andTrichoplusia ni (Hübner) were used to examine the effect of genetic and seasonal environmental variation in host plant suitability on the efficacy ofBacillus thuringiensis subsp.kurstaki (Berliner). The effects of host plant genotype andB. thuringiensis were generally independent, so thatB. thuringiensis efficacy was greatest on the resistant host plant cultivar. Host plant suitability varied within growing season for both insect species but, while host plant suitability decreased with increasing plant age forT. ni, the response ofS. exigua to plant age was not as clear. Within season variation in host plant suitability affectedB. thuringiensis efficacy and the interaction betweenB. thuringiensis and host plant cultivar forS. exigua but not forT. ni. Soluble protein and Folin-Denis phenolic concentrations of host plant tissue were not correlated with changes in host plant suitability to either insect species.  相似文献

The temperate fernsPolystichum craspedosorum, P. retroso-paleaceum, P. tripteron, P. braunii andP. microchlamys are distributed widely in Hokkaido: on 13 Hokkaido mountains their average altitudinal distributions are 450, 479, 570, 689 and 964 m above sea level, respectively. The developmental stage of the sporophytic leaf is expressed by the “number of venation” (NV, the number of veins branching from the midrib of the leaf), which, inPolystichum ferns, is itself a qualitative expression of the phase-change from sterile to fertile leaf production and is more discriminatory than leaf area, length or dry weight. Usually, the developmental stage structure of the fertile leaf expressed by NV in the fivePolystichum ferns showed a normal distribution. Among the fourPolystichum ferns that grow in the forest understory of Hokkaido's cool temperate regions, a good correlation was found between the mean altitude of vertical distribution and the maximum NV of the leaf (r=−0.993) and the initiation of maturity in the relative developmental stage (r=0.991) of the ferns.Polystichum craspedosorum found on cliffs, however, matures at much earlier stage and has the smallest maximum NV. In the developmental stage expressed by the NV, the initiation of fertility and maximum NV seem to be correlated with altitudinal distribution and habitat in populations ofPolystichum ferns in Hokkaido. Summary This article gives a survey of nucleus-associated structures and inclusions in a diverse range of characean algae includingChara braunii Gm.,Chara corallina Klein ex Willd., em. R.D.W.,Nitella cristata A.Br., em. R.D.W.,Nitella flexilis (L.) Ag.,Nitella furcata (Roxb. ex Bruz.) Ag. em. R.D.W.,Nitella hyalina (DC.) Ag.,Nitella pseudoflabellata A.Br., em. R.D.W.,Nitella pseudoflabellata var.imperialis T.F.A.,Nitella translucens var.axillaris (A.Br.) R.D.W. andNitellopsis obtusa (Desv. in Lois.) J.Gr. Lampbrushchromosome-like structures were found in nuclei ofNitella flexilis andNitellopsis obtusa and seem to be involved in the distribution of genetic material during nuclear fragmentation. Intranuclear tubular crystals of unknown protein composition were present in all species, especially in young, elongating cells, and could be important for establishing the main axis of the nuclei. Spindle-shaped protein crystals that originate in the nucleus and are released into the cytoplasm upon nuclear degeneration were observed in branchlet internodal cells of one population ofNitella flexilis. Perinuclear microtubules were present in all species, but perinuclear actin fibrils were hitherto only found in mostNitella species and inNitellopsis obtusa. None of these nucleus-associated structures seems to be responsible for the formation of constrictions leading to nuclear fragmentation. These constrictions were perpendicular to the main axis of the nucleus and symmetrical in theNitella species but asymmetric inC. braunii, C. corallina, and inNitellopsis obtusa. Summary A new species ofPseudoarachniotus P. marginosporus, is described and illustrated. The developmental morphology of this new ascomycete is discussed. On a standard medium such as YpSs,P. marginosporus can be distinguished from other species of the genus by colonial coloration which varies from ochre-rust to very pale yellow at different stages of maturation. The colony ofP. roseus is red, red-orange or orange-yellow;P. citrinus is lemon yellow to brownish yellow in age;P. reticulatus is red orange andP. hyalinosporus is yellowish and usually with a great deal of green pigmentation in the mycelium and in the medium. Furthermore ascospores ofP. marginosporus are oblate, small and thin-walled, measuring 2.2–3.0×4.0–4.4 µ, with a minute elevated rim around the long axis, while ascospores ofP. reticulatus are globose and reticulate, and those ofP. roseus andP. citrinus are large and thick-walled, measuring about 4.4×7.7 µ. Ascospores ofP. hyalinosporus are similar in size and shape to those ofP. marginosporus, but lack a rim or other markings.  相似文献

The influence of feeding and temperature on life table parameters ofEuseius stipulatus (Athias-Henriot) andTyphlodromus phialatus Athias-Henriot was determined in laboratory tests. Both phytoseiids developed and reproduced readily when fed onCarpobrotus edulis (L.) pollen andPanonychus citri (McGregor) Intrinsic rates of increase (r m ) at 25°C forE. stipulatus andT. phialatus were 0.197 and 0.126, and, when fed onP. citri, 0.129 and 0.144, respectively.Tetranychus urticae Koch offered as prey allowed normal development and oviposition ofT. phialatus, but no eggs were laid byE. stipulatus when fed on this spider mite. Eggs and honeydew ofAleurothrixus floccosus Mask. furnished sufficient nutrition for development of immatures ofE. stipulatus. Larvae ofPlanoccocus citri Risso, and honeydew and eggs ofA. floccosus, allowed adult survival but no egg-laying of the predaceous mites.Lorryia formosa Cooreman was not a favoured prey species.Life tables were calculated forE. stipulatus fed on pollen andT. phialatus fed onP. citri at constant temperatures of 18, 25, and 32°C. Maximum development was reached at 32°C, withr m values of 0.225 forE. stipulatus and 0.179 forT. phialatus. In general, both phytoseiids showed medium to high total number of eggs per female and long oviposition periods when compared with other phytoseiid species.When mating took place at 32°C,E. stipulatus females were not able to lay eggs, thus suggesting an interference of high temperatures with fertilization in this species. No hatching was observed in eggs of either species when kept at relative humidities of 50% or lower. Seedling establishment ofPolygonum cuspidatum (Seib. et Zucc.) andPolygonum weyrichii (F. Schmit) var.alpinum (Maxim.), dominant early-successional species in a volcanic gravel area on Mt Fuji, Japan, was compared for current-year seedlings at 2500 m a.s.l. The rate of survival in the first winter after germination at 2500 m was 2% and 24% forP. cuspidatum andP. weyrichii seedlings, respectively, and correlated with the upper distribution limit of each (2500–2600 m forP. cuspidatum; 3200–3300 m forP. weyrichii). The critical size for survival was 12 mg dry weight for overwintering current-year seedlings of both species. At 2500 m, the percentage of seedlings that attained the critical size for survival at the end of the first growing season was 19% and 85% forP. cuspidatum andP. weyrichii, respectively. Growth curves indicated that the larger-seeded characteristic ofP. weyrichii contributed to larger end-of-season size and resulted in higher rate of seedling survival at 2500 m, compared with smaller-seededP. cuspidatum. Current-year seedlings ofP. weyrichii, at least up to 3250 m, attained the first year annual growth critical for overwintering and therefore for successful seedling establishment, due to the large-seeded characteristic. At the top (3770 m) beyond the upper distribution limit ofP. weyrichii, most seedlings raised artificially failed to attain the critical size for survival in the first growing period due to the reduced growing period. Failure of seedling establishment would thus appear to restrict the distribution of the species at altitudes higher than 3300 m.  相似文献

To understand the life history characteristic for expanding the distributional area to colder climates, developmental age structure of population ofCyrtomium falcatum was observed along southwestern coasts of Hokkaido at the natural northern boundary of its distribution, with reference to the alternation of generations. The length and number of pinna of fertile leaves ofCyrtomium falcatum decrease towards the northern part of Japan. In southwestern Hokkaido, typically dwarf fertile leaves and gametophytes were observed growing together on cliffs nearby the sea. To estimate the developmental ages of small and dwarf leaves, the number of venation (NV: branching number of vein from midrib) of leaves was counted on each sporophyte. The sporophyte with leaves at the simple pinna stage ranging from 0–25NV, is predominant in the population of southwestern coasts of Hokkaido. The fertility of the sporophyte seems to be achieved more than five years after the germination. The gametophytes were also observed at the location to be almost equal in number to sporophytes. The number of gametophytes and sporophytes decreases with advancement of developmental stages. In the same location at Okushiri Isl. with slight gradiency of humidity, the gametophyte is predominant on the drier cliff, while the sporophyte is predominant on the humid hole. The population ofCyrtomium falcatum at the natural northern boundary in Hokkaido, seems to have the life history characteristic with alternation of generations. Moxalactam (LY127935), a novel beta-lactam antibiotic, was compared with semisynthetic penicillins, cephalosporins, and aminoglycosides by the agar dilution method against 5,317 recent clinical isolates of facultative and anaerobic bactria. At 0.5 μg/ml, moxalactam inhibited 90% of all Gram-negative bacilli tested except forPseudomonas aeruginosa (81% inhibited by 32 μg/ml) andAcinetobacter calcoaceticus (88% inhibited by 32 μg/ml). More than 90% ofBacteroides fragilis andStaphylococcus aureus were inhibited by 4 μg/ml and 8 μg/ml, respectively. Moxalactam was at least 16-fold more active by weight than cephalothin, cefamandole, and cefoxitin forEscherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, andEnterobacter species, and 2- to 4-fold more active than cefoxitin forB. fragilis. Moxalactam was 4-fold less active than cefamandole and cephalothin forS. aureus and 2- to 4-fold less active than piperacillin forP. aeruginosa. Moxalactam was as active or more active than the aminoglycosides for all facultative Gram-negative bacilli except forP. aeruginosa. Moxalactam was inhibitory (minimal inhibitory concentration <16 μg/ml) for 20/27 gentamicin-resistant isolates and 8/13 amikacin-resistant organisms. Moxalactam’s in vitro activity against Gram-negative bacilli is markedly superior to presently available cephalosporins and, except forP. aeruginosa, is comparable to the aminoglycosides.  相似文献

The influence of environmental parameters on mycelial linear growth ofPleurotus ostreatus, P. eryngii, P. pulmonarius, Agrocybe aegerita, Lentinula edodes, Volvariella volvacea andAuricularia auricula-judae was determined in two different nutrient media in a wide range of temperature, forming the basis for the assessment of their temperature optimaV. volvacea grew faster at 35°C,P. eryngii at 25°C,P. ostreatus andP. pulmonarius at 30°C,A. aegerita at 25 or 30°C andA. auricula-judae at 20 or 25°C depending on the nutrient medium used andL. edodes at 20 or 30°C depending on the strain examined. The mycelium extension rates were evaluated on seven mushroom cultivation substrates: wheat straw, cotton gin-trash, peanut shells, poplar sawdust, oak sawdust, corn cobs and olive press-cake. The mycelium extension rates (linear growth and colonization rates) were determined by the ‘race-tube’ technique, and were found to be the highest on cotton gin-trash, peanut shells and poplar sawdust forPleurotus spp. andA. aegerita. Wheat straw, peanut shells and particularly cotton gin-trash supported fast growth ofV. volvacea, whereas wheat straw was the most suitable substrate forL. edodes andA. auricula-judae. Supplemented oak sawdust and olive press-cake were poor substrates for most species examined, white almost all strains performed adequately on corn cobs.  相似文献

The 2C DNA content and base composition of five Pinus (2n=24) species and two Pinus subspecies from the Balkan region have been estimated by flow cytometry. P. heldreichii (five populations) and P. peuce (one population) were assessed for the first time, as also were subspecies of P. nigra (three populations—two of subspecies nigra and one of subspecies dalmatica) along with P. sylvestris, and P. mugo from the same region. The 2C DNA values of these Pinus ranged from 42.5 pg to 54.9 pg (41.7–53.8×109 bp), and the base composition was quite stable (about 39.5% GC). Significant differences were observed between two subspecies of P. nigra and even between two populations of subsp. nigra. The two other species (P. sylvestris and P. mugo) had 2C values of 42.5 pg and 42.8 pg, respectively, while that of P. peuce was 54.9 pg. These genome sizes are in accordance with published values except for P. sylvestris, which was 20% below estimates made by other authors.Communicated by M. Beckert  相似文献

Aspergillus chevalieri andPenicillium steckii grew best at 30°C and at pH of 6.5–7.5. Among the carbon sources employed, sucrose supported maximum growth ofA. chevalieri while glucose was best forP. steckii. Growth of both organisms was optimal on ammonium tartrate as the sole source of nitrogen.A. chevalieri andP. steckii grew in synthetic media containing, respectively, soluble or insoluble cellulose as the sole carbon source, releasing a cellulolytic enzyme into the medium. The enzymes from each organism were separated and partially purified by molecular exclusion and ion-exchange chromatography into two components. There was synergism between the components of enzymes from each organism in that they together released more glucose units from insoluble cellulose than could be predicted from their activities alone. The molar mass of the enzymes estimated from the elution volume on Sephadex was approximately 110 kg/mol forA. chevalieri and 94 kg/mol forP. steckii.  相似文献

The foliage development ofDryopteris crassirhizoma Nakai was quantitatively estimated by measurements of shape and size of leaves from different developmental stages of sporophytes, to lead to an understanding of the life history characteristics of the species. The number of midrib branches (NV, number of veins) of the leaf corresponds to the leaf-shape complexity (DI, dissection index; shape complexity from a circle) and length of leafblade (BL). Some quantitative characters, such as leaf uniformity (decrease in NV variation), changes in shape and increase in number of leaves, vary progressively during foliage formation. The sequence of foliage development can be quantified using the parameter NV: for example, 15-NV for leaf uniformity, 30-NV for leaf-shape change from triangular to oblanceolate, 60-NV for increase in leaf number and leaf fertility in the course of sporophyte ontogeny. To elucidate the quantitative and qualitative expression of fern development, various features of leaf-size and morphology were examined on leaves ofPolystichum tripteron (Aspidiaceae) in Japan. Among ten parameters, the number of branches of the leaf midrib (NV) proved to be the most successful for discrimination between fertile and sterile leaf populations. In the phase-change from sterile to fertile leaves, the NV parameter also gave the strongest correlation, increasing with fertility (r = 0.983), and is therefore a useful tool for research into the life history characteristics of ferns.Contribution no. 2751 from the Institute of Low Temperature Science, Hokkaido University.  相似文献

C-band patterns are described for 20Lilium spp. distributed across six sections. All species have a similar basic karyotype (n = 12) but C-bands differ markedly between them. The patterns are characterized by a dispersed scattering of thin intercalary bands as well as centric and NOR bands. Only one species,L. canadense, shows a clear equilocal pattern with intercalary C-bands occurring proximally in all of the longer chromosome arms. Comparing species, similar patterns are revealed forL. regale andL. sulphureum, forL. formosanum andL. longiflorum (all in sect.Leucolirion) and to a lesser extent forL. hansonii, L. martagon, andL. tsingtauense (sect.Martagon). The pattern forL. henryi (previously classed in sect.Sinomartagon) matches those ofL. regale andL. sulphureum quite well and its transfer to sect.Leucolirion is proposed. This is consistent with results from interspecies hybrids betweenL. henryi andL. regale (and related species) which are reportedly fertile. No other clear similarities in C-band patterns were seen across species. It seems that C-band patterns change rapidly inLilium and hence their usefulness in classification will be restricted to identifying closely related species.Dedicated to Prof.D. G. The responses of 3 phytoseiid mite speciesPhytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot,Phytoseius finitimus Ribaga andAmblyseius gossipi Elbadry to allelochemics emitted by prey mite speciesTetranychus urticae Koch,Brevipalpus pulcher (Canestrini & Fanzago) andEriophyes dioscoridis Soliman & Abou-Awad were studied using a test of two-choice assays. The repellent effect elicited by the tenuipalpid mite,B. pulcher and the eriophyid mite,E. dioscoridis againstP. persimilis could be an evidence for the existence of allomones produced by these 2 prey species. The negative response ofP. persimilis to the different stadia ofB. pulcher and the attraction ofP. finitimus toward the same prey suggest that the volatile semiochemicals produced by this prey act as kairomones forP. finitimus and as allomones forP. persimilis. The strong attraction ofP. finitimus andA. gossipi to the different stadia ofT. urticae and the considerable attraction of either predator toB. pulcher compared to the neutral response toE. dioscoridis reveal that both predators show a hierarchy of preference for the kairomones of the 3 prey species studied.   相似文献
