In 1986 in Western Australia, cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) infection was widespread in breeders' selections of narrow-leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius), and in collections of lupin cvs and wild L. angustifolius lines. When seed of some of these selections and cvs was sown, seed-borne CMV was detected in seedlings. Infection of F1 progenies was traced to use of infected parent plants. CMV was also widespread in 25 seed crops of the new lupin cv. Wandoo but not in 42 seed crops of the new cv. Danja. When samples of the seed sown in 1986 were tested, CMV was detected in 3 - 34% of seedlings of cv. Wandoo but in none of cv. Danja. Following intensive roguing of symptom-bearing plants in the 1986 seed crop of new lupin cv. Gungurru, the level of seedling infection with CMV in seed samples after harvest was 0·1-0·2%. CMV was detected in 6 - 8%, 0·6-5% and 0 - 18% of seedlings from seed samples of established lupin cvs Chittick, Yandee and Illyarrie respectively. Highest levels of seed transmission were in seed from crops grown in high rainfall areas. When a sample of cv. Wandoo seed was graded for size by sieving, CMV was detected in seedlings grown from seed in all grades, but the smallest grade contained the highest level of infection. When seed was collected from pods at different positions on plants in a CMV-infected crop of cv. Illyarrie, seed from primary pods transmitted the virus to seedlings at a 3% rate, seed from first order lateral pods at 8% while seed from second and third order lateral pods transmitted at 13%. Examination of CMV-infected lupin crops indicated that seed-infected plants competed poorly and tended to be shaded out in dense crops but to survive in sparse crops. In 1987 during drought conditions after seeding, plant mortality was greater with seed-infected seedlings than with healthy seedlings despite wide plant spacing. An isolate of CMV from subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) induced severer symptoms in lupins than four isolates from lupin; only the subterranean clover isolate prevented seed production. In tests at one lupin breeding site, CMV was found in 15 species of weeds and volunteer legumes. Fumaria officinalis, Stachys arvensis and volunteer lupins were most frequently infected.  相似文献

Four field experiments were sown with AMV‐infected or healthy seed of burr medic (Medicago polymorpha) and grazed by sheep; two were sown with cv. Circle Valley and two with cv. Santiago. Seed‐infected plants acted as primary sources for virus spread by naturally occurring aphids. Insecticides and admixture with annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum), a non‐host of AMV, suppressed virus spread to different extents in the plots sown with infected seed. Effects of the different amounts of virus spread obtained on overall concentration of the oestrogenic compound coumestrol (dihydroxycoumestan) in dry stems and pods, and on seed production were measured in the medic. With cv. Santiago, stem and pod coumestrol concentration values for plots sown with healthy seed were significantly smaller than those for all plots sown with infected seed regardless of whether they were sprayed. With cv. Circle Valley, the coumestrol values for stems from plots sown with healthy seed were significantly smaller than those for unsprayed plots sown with infected seed but not than those for sprayed plots or ones with grass admixtures, and there were no significant differences with pods. There was always a significant positive relationship between concentration of coumestrol in medic stems and percentage AMV infection of swards; this was also so with pods in two experiments. A linear model best fitted this relationship with cv. Circle Valley but a logarithmic model did so with cv Santiago. In glasshouse grown plants, the coumestrol content of dried medic shoots was increased 11 (cv. Circle Valley) and five (cv. Santiago) times by AMV infection. AMV increased mean coumestrol concentrations up to 256 ppm (field) and 237 ppm (glasshouse) in stems and 223 ppm in pods (field). Sowing healthy seed in new pasture swards was an effective strategy for minimising coumestrol accumulation in burr medic swards. Two, but not single, applications of a newer generation pyrethroid insecticide to swards in which AMV was spreading significantly diminished coumestrol accumulation but applying organophosphorus insecticide twice and carbamate insecticide repeatedly did not. Medic seed yields and individual seed weights were sometimes significantly increased by the treatments, suppression of AMV spread by regular carbamate sprays being sufficient to increase seed yield by 55%.  相似文献

The kinetics of Breinlia booliati infection in 3 inbred rat strains (Lewis, Wistar and Sprague Dawley) were investigated. One group of rats was infected as neonates (less than 24 hours of age) with third-stage larvae of B. booliati and the other group was infected as juveniles (4 weeks of age). The results showed that infection in the neonates were significantly different from the infection in the juveniles. The 60 rats infected as neonates, when necropsied between 8 to 10 months postinfection, yielded adult worms. The 2 neonatal infection groups of Lewis and Wistar strains showed highest susceptibility to the infections. The mean prepatent period was 85 days. Ninety to 95% of the infected rats were patent with microfilaraemia and a large percentage (33 to 47%) of them had high microfilaraemia counts exceeding 3000 mff/20 mm3 of blood and larger sizes (mean 157.11 mm for female adult worms and 61.88 mm for male adult worms. The adult worms were distributed equally in both the pleural (57%) and peritoneal cavity (43%). In most aspects, the neonatal infection group of the Sprague-Dawley strain was intermediate in susceptibility between the 2 neonatal infection groups of the Lewis and Wistar strains and the 3 juvenile infection groups. In contrast to neonatal infection groups, the 3 juvenile infection groups exhibited low infection rates (37%, 58% and 47% for the Lewis, Wistar and Sprague Dawley strains respectively), longer prepatent periods (mean 101 days), lower recovery rates (2 to 4%), lower adult worm loads (mean 0.4 to 0.8 female worms, and 0.2 to 0.8 male worms per rat), and smaller sizes (mean 141.24 mm for female adult worms and 53.75 mm for male adult worms). Forty-four to 57% of these infected rats harboured either single male or single female adult worms in the body cavity. Most (92%) of the adult worms recovered from the juvenile infection groups resided in the pleural cavity and the remaining 8% were recovered from the peritoneal cavity. Microfilaraemia could be detected in only 3/20 Lewis rats, 5/20 Wistar rats and 5/20 Sprague Dawley rats. The mean peak microfilaraemia of the 3 pooled juvenile infection groups was 632 mff/20 mm3 of blood, ranging from 7 mff/20 mm3 to 1856 mmf/20 mm3. Our results indicate that the susceptibility to B. booliati infection in white rats is both genetic and age-associated. The responses of the 2 distinct infection groups to B. booliati infections are discussed.  相似文献

The production of ethanol from carob pods by Saccharomyces cerevisiae in solid-state fermentation was investigated. The maximal ethanol concentration (160±3 g/kg dry pods), ethanol productivity (6.7 ± 0.2 g/kg per hour), ethanol yield (40 ± 1.8%), biomass concentration (7.5 ± 0.4 x 108 cells/g carob pulp) and fermentation efficiency (80 ± 2%) were obtained at an inoculum amount of 3%, a particle size of 0.5 mm, a moisture level of 70%, a pH of 4.5 and a temperature of 30°C. Under the same fermentation conditions both sterilized and non-sterilized carob pods pulp gave the same maximum ethanol concentration.  相似文献

Wild plants of Brassica oleracea (wild cabbage) are commonly infected with turnip mosaic poty virus (TuMV), turnip yellow mosaic tymovirus (TYMV) and several other viruses. A field experiment in which plants were inoculated either with TuMV or TYMV showed that virus infection significantly reduced survival, growth and reproduction. Relative to water inoculated-controls, plants infected with TYMV had greater mortality, were shorter, had a smaller leaf area and number, showed a greater amount of damage from herbivory and chlorosis, were less likely to flower and produced fewer pods and lower total seed output. Plants infected with TuMV did not appear to be adversely affected at first; however, mortality after 18 months was higher than control plants. Although TuMV infection had no effect on the number of plants flowering, the infected plants did produce fewer pods and a lower total seed output. We conclude that both viruses can significantly affect vegetative and reproductive performance of wild cabbage and hence that introgression of virus resistance (particularly when conferred by a major gene or a transgene) from a crop might increase plant fitness in natural populations of this species. Ecological risk assessments of virus resistance transgenes must do more than survey adult plants in natural populations for the presence of the target virus. Failure to detect the virus could be due to high mortality on infection with the virus.  相似文献

东北黑土区上坡汇流对坡面土壤侵蚀有重要影响,因此辨析降雨和汇流对黑土区坡面土壤侵蚀的影响对农田土壤侵蚀防治有重要意义。通过设计不同降雨强度和汇流速率以及二者组合的模拟降雨及上方汇流试验,分析了降雨和汇流对黑土坡面侵蚀的影响及其贡献。试验处理包括两个降雨强度(50 mm/h和100 mm/h)、两个汇流速率(50 mm/h和100 mm/h,即:10 L/min和20 L/min)、以及4种不同降雨强度和汇流速率的组合((50+50)mm/h、(50+100)mm/h、(100+50)mm/h和(100+100)mm/h)。结果表明,在50 mm/h和100 mm/h上方汇流引起的坡面侵蚀量仅分别是50 mm/h和100 mm/h降雨引起坡面侵蚀量的1.9%和0.6%;当降雨强度和坡上方汇流速率分别由50 mm/h增加至100 mm/h时,降雨试验处理下的坡面侵蚀量增加6.1倍,汇流试验处理下的坡面侵蚀量增加3.2倍,说明降雨对坡面土壤侵蚀的影响显著大于汇流的作用。在降雨和汇流组合试验中,总供水强度(降雨强度+汇流速率)为150 mm/h时,降雨强度为100 mm/h和汇流速率为50 mm/h组合试验的坡面侵蚀量是降雨强度为50 mm/h和汇流速率为100 mm/h组合试验坡面侵蚀量的7.9倍。在相同汇流条件下,降雨强度由50 mm/h增加到100 mm/h时,降雨强度的增加对坡面侵蚀量的贡献率为89.6%-99.5%;而在相同降雨条件下,坡面汇流速率由50 mm/h增加100 mm/h时,汇流速率的增加对坡面侵蚀量的贡献率为17.2%-78.7%,说明在东北黑土区防治坡面汇流对坡面土壤侵蚀影响也尤为重要。  相似文献

Inoculation of cocoa with basidiospores of the witches' broom fungus Crinipellis perniciosa showed that stem, petiole and pulvinus tissues of unhardened flushes and also exposed wound surfaces were susceptible to infection in addition to the growing tip. Inoculation of flower cushions and young pods showed that carrot-shaped pods were usually the result of fertilisation of systemically infected flowers. In the absence of fertilisation such flowers produced parthenocarpic pods or chirimoyas. Transmis-sion of the fungus via infected beans was demonstrated and this may be a potent method of long-distance dispersal.  相似文献

Observations made in Mali strongly suggest that Rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV) is spread by weaverbirds (Quelea quelea) below and around baobab trees (Adansonia digitata) in which they nest. Rice leaves in bird nests appeared to be infected. In Spain, an infection of Southern bean mosaic virus (SBMV) in string (climbing) beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) was apparently introduced and spread by sparrows (Passer domesticus) judging from the damage caused on flowers and bean pods. Damaged leaves and pods on SBMV‐infected plants were also found in a screenhouse visited by sparrows and bulbuls (Pycnonotus barbatus) in Morocco. These observations showed that both viruses could be spread by birds when either collecting infected leaves for nesting or feeding on infected plants.  相似文献

Analysis of time trends in newly diagnosed HIV-1 infected patients in Slovenia over a 10-year period (1996-2005) showed an increase in the number of newly diagnosed HIV-1 infected patients in 2004 and 2005 as well as increase in the number of newly diagnosed patients with primary/early HIV-1 infection. A retrospective analysis was performed in order to evaluate the clinical, epidemiological, laboratory and virological parameters of primary/early HIV-1 infection presenting with or without acute retroviral syndrome (ARS). Primary/early HIV-1 infection was diagnosed in 33 (19.5%) out of 169 newly diagnosed HIV-1 infected patients during the 10-year period. Most patients experienced ARS, the most commonly reported symptoms being fever, malaise and pharyngitis, followed by rash and lymphadenopathy. Median CD4 cell count was 415 cells/mm3, median CD8 cell count was 865 cells/mm3 and median HIV-1 viral load at the time of diagnosis was 5.1 loglo copies/mL. The increase in the number of newly diagnosed HIV-1 infected patients may be in part due to increased awareness among clinicians of the possibility of ARS, and the possibility of increased awareness of symptoms of ARS among persons at high risk of infection.  相似文献

Sixty-seven splenectomized Aotus azarae boliviensis were infected with strains of Plasmodium vivax from Southeast Asia (2), New Guinea (2), North Korea (1), and Central America (3). Maximum parasitemias varied among the different strains, with the mean maximum parasitemia for the primary infection period being 16,200 per mm3. Animals previously infected with Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium malariae produced maximum parasitemias of 30,200 and 11,900 per mm3, respectively. Gametocytes infective to Anopheles freeborni mosquitoes were produced with 7 of the 8 strains examined.  相似文献

Mature pods from three clones ofTheobroma cacaoL., differingin their susceptibility toPhytophthora megakaryaBra. and Grif.,were infected with the fungal mycelium. Variations of the contentsin carbohydrates, ketohexoses, amino acids, phenols and flavonol,and hydroxycinnamic derivatives were followed in the cortexfor 4d. After pod infection, the amount of carbohydrates decreasedmore rapidly in the clone SNK10 (highly susceptible) than inthe clones SNK413 (low susceptibility) and ICS95 (mildly susceptible),suggesting their utilization by the fungus. At the same time,the amount of ketohexoses decreased by 22% in the clone SNK10,remained almost constant in the clone SNK413, and increasedby 53% in the clone ICS95. The content of amino acids increasedwith time in the pods of the three clones. The results suggestthat the amino acid variation is related to pod aging and tothe infection. Four days after treatment, an increase in phenolicswas measured in all cases. The increase in flavonol and hydroxycinnamicderivatives was related to the wounding and to the infectionof the pods. DuringPhytophthorablack pod development, variationsof the contents in the biochemicals studied herein were genotype-dependent,and the patterns of the changes could be related, at least inpart, to the susceptibility of the genotype toP. megakarya. Epidemiological studies of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides disease of cocoa   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The intensities of foliar infection (leaf blight and shot hole) and pod rot, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, were recorded from a cocoa-areca mixed garden and a cocoa-monocrop garden during 2 years. The intensity of pod rot was recorded from both the gardens. The intensities of leaf blight and shot hole gradually increased from July, reached a peak during September-November, decreased thereafter and reached the lowest level during April-June. Increase in leaf infection was associated in both plantings and in both years with the period of rain (June-November). The phylloplane population of C. gloeosporioides also increased during June-November when the temperature tended to be low and constant with high rainfall and relative humidity. During this period there were few susceptible stages of pods (cherelles and young pods) and pod infection was very low. Nearly mature pods were free from infection. I n both years, pod infection was more in the cocoaareca mixed garden than' in the cocoa-monocrop; it was observed during January-May, when the susceptible stages were mostly prevalent but when the C. gloeosporioides population was low and the climatic factors appeared to be relatively unfavourable. This may be one reason for the lesser incidence of pod rot when compared to foliar disease.  相似文献

Individuals infected with HIV frequently develop cytopenias and suppressed hematopoiesis. The role of direct HIV infection of hematopoietic progenitor cells in this process has not been defined. In this study, purified CD34+ bone marrow progenitor cells from 74 Zairian and American patients were studied by both coculture viral isolation and polymerase chain reaction for evidence of HIV infection. A total of 36.5% of Zairian and 14% of American patients had HIV infection of the CD34+ cell subset, with as many as 1 in 500 CD34+ cells infected. Most of the Zairian patients in this study had advanced HIV infection and markedly decreased CD4/CD8 T lymphocyte ratios (mean 0.160 +/- 0.08), and no laboratory value predicted the presence of infection in the CD34+ subset of a given Zairian individual. In contrast, American patients with CD34+ cell infection had total CD4 cells less than 20/mm3 and a greater decrease of the CD4/CD8 T lymphocyte ratio compared to seropositive Americans without CD34+ cell infection (p = 0.003). Hematopoiesis, studied by methylcellulose colony assays, was depressed in all seropositive patients studied with no significant further suppression when CD34+ cells were infected. Thus, CD34+ bone marrow progenitor cells are infected in vivo in a subset of seropositive individuals and may serve as an additional reservoir of virus in HIV-infected individuals.  相似文献

The infection dynamics of the gill monogeneans Cichlidogyrus tilapiae and C. sclerosus on Oreochromis niloticus with respect to habitat type (reservoir, stream, ponds and cages), host sex, size and seasons was determined between January and November 2008. During the study period, 45.2% of the 650 fish examined were infected with Cichlidogyrus spp. The infected hosts harboured an average of 8.6 ± 3.4 parasites/fish. Across habitat types, the proportion of infected fish was not statistically different. In contrast, the number of parasites recorded on infected fish from different habitat types differed significantly. The highest parasite number was recorded in reservoir-dwelling fish and lowest in stream-dwelling hosts. Concerning sex, more female O. niloticus were infected and harboured a high number of parasites than male and sexually undifferentiated fish. A weak negative relationship was found between rainfall and monthly parasite infections. However, a higher number of parasites and proportion of infected hosts were found during dry than in wet seasons, except in ponds. Results of this study show that differential exposure due to changes in fish behaviour associated with habitat modification and sex may account for the infection difference across the sampled sites. Meanwhile, rainfall and the associated hydrological events are important factors regulating monogenean infections in tropical aquatic environments. The continuous presence of Cichlidogyrus spp. in fish provides evidence of possible parasite outbreaks, indicating the application of biosecurity measures as crucial for the success of intensive fish farming.  相似文献

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that is neurotropic in humans, birds, and other animals. While adaptive immunity plays an important role in preventing WNV spread to the central nervous system (CNS), little is known about how alpha/beta interferon (IFN-alpha/beta) protects against peripheral and CNS infection. In this study, we examine the virulence and tropism of WNV in IFN-alpha/beta receptor-deficient (IFN- alpha/betaR-/-) mice and primary neuronal cultures. IFN-alpha/betaR-/- mice were acutely susceptible to WNV infection through subcutaneous inoculation, with 100% mortality and a mean time to death (MTD) of 4.6 +/- 0.7 and 3.8+/- 0.5 days after infection with 10(0) and 10(2) PFU, respectively. In contrast, congenic wild-type 129Sv/Ev mice infected with 10(2) PFU showed 62% mortality and a MTD of 11.9 +/- 1.9 days. IFN-alpha/betaR-/- mice developed high viral loads by day 3 after infection in nearly all tissues assayed, including many that were not infected in wild-type mice. IFN-alpha/betaR-/- mice also demonstrated altered cellular tropism, with increased infection in macrophages, B cells, and T cells in the spleen. Additionally, treatment of primary wild-type neurons in vitro with IFN-beta either before or after infection increased neuronal survival independent of its effect on WNV replication. Collectively, our data suggest that IFN-alpha/beta controls WNV infection by restricting tropism and viral burden and by preventing death of infected neurons.  相似文献

以上海市中心城区典型排水区域为研究对象,基于SWMM模型连续模拟2009—2011年降雨径流,分析区域235场降雨及地表径流特征.结果表明: 该区域发生频率较高的降雨具有雨量小、强度低的特点,雨量为0~10 mm、平均降雨强度为0~5 mm·h-1、降雨峰值为0~10 mm·h-1的降雨发生频率最大,分别占所有研究降雨场次的66.4%、88.8%和79.6%,这对于该区域应用低影响开发措施削减小雨量或低强度降雨下的径流和面源污染具有重要意义;径流量总体随着降雨量增大而增大,区域降雨产流临界值不仅与降雨量有关,还与平均降雨强度和降雨历时有关,2 mm以下的降雨基本不产流;2~4 mm的降雨如降雨强度在1.6 mm·h-1以下,产流量不到1 mm,当降雨量在4 mm以上、平均降雨强度大于1.6 mm·h-1时,区域基本产流.基于SWMM径流模拟结果,建立适合该区域的径流量与降雨因子的回归方程,其调整R2均大于0.97,能较好反映该区域径流量与降雨因子的关系.研究结果可为该区域更好地规划低影响开发措施和削减排水系统溢流污染提供计算基础,并为类似区域的径流研究提供参考.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted to determine the effects of a rainwater-harvesting furrow/ridge system (RHFRS) on water use efficiency (WUE) and grain yield of spring com in different simulated rainfall treatments. Our results showed that when rainfall supply ranged between 230 and 440 mm, the rainwater-harvesting furrow/ridge system increased surface temperature by 0.7–1°C at the depth of 10 cm and increased soil water storage by 5%–12% in the soil layer of 0–120 cm compared with the control. Emergence was also more rapid in the furrow-ridge system. Spring corn yield in the rainwater-harvesting furrow/ridge system was 83% higher in the 230 mm rainfall treatment, 43% higher in the 340 mm rainfall treatment, and 11% higher in the 440 mm rainfall treatment compared with the control. Similarly, WUE was 77% higher in the 230 mm rainfall treatment, 43% higher in the 340 mm treatment, and 10% higher in the 440 mm treatment than those of the control under the corresponding rainfalls. In summary, results from this study indicate that 440 mm rainfall during the spring corn growing season is the upper limit for which the rainwater-harvesting furrow/ridge system should be adopted.  相似文献

Yield reduction of pea (Pisum sativum) due to various types of infections by Mycosphaerella pinodes on pods was assessed. A range of disease severities was created on pods of pea plants grown in the glasshouse, by painting the pods with different concentrations of spore suspensions, at three different pod development stages: lag phase, the beginning of seed filling (BSF) and mid-filling of the seeds. Seed number at harvest was reduced only if the pods were infected before BSF, as shown previously for whole plant infections. Pod infections led to individual seed weight (ISW) losses from zero (for late infections, at mid-filling) to 20% (for earlier infections and severe disease). Infection during the lag phase affected ISW by reducing seed growth rate, whereas infection at BSF tended to reduce the duration of seed filling. There was a linear relationship between the area under the disease progress curve and the percentage decrease in ISW. This model should be complemented by the effect of leaves and stem infections, in order to predict ISW losses in diseased crop conditions, in which epidemics occur on all aerial parts of the pea plant.  相似文献

We describe the use of a murine model to evaluate resistance against subsequent challenge following a primary infection with oncospheres of Echinococcus granulosus. Mice (Kunming strain) were infected with hatched oncospheres of Echinococcus granulosus; 21 days later a second challenge was given by a different route of infection. A primary infection by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection stimulated 100 and 90.5% protection in terms of reduced cyst numbers against a secondary infection given subcutaneously (s.c.) or intravenously (i.v.), respectively. A primary infection given s.c. followed by i.p. or i.v. challenge resulted in 84.0 and 100% protection, respectively. Intravenous infection followed by i.p. or s.c. challenge resulted in 98.5 and 69.4% protection, respectively. With the i.v. route of infection, almost all resultant cysts were present in the lungs. The data show that a primary infection with oncospheres can induce total or a high degree of protection against a subsequent challenge and confirms that natural (concomitant) immunity can be stimulated in the intermediate host as the result of a primary infection. This may explain the decline in hydatid infection in sheep older than 2 years in hyper-endemic areas such as those found in Xingjiang, China. These older sheep may have been earlier infected and have subsequently self-cured, with the primary infection stimulating an immune response that protects the intermediate host animals from further infection.  相似文献
