The southern African pholcid spiders previously assigned to Pholcus and Spermophora are revised and their phylogenetic position within Pholcidae is analysed cladistically. Two distinct groups are recognized: the first is restricted to the Cape region and probably correctly placed in Spermophora ; it includes Spermophora peninsulae Lawrence and four new species. The second is more widely distributed in southern and eastern South Africa, and reaches as far north as Cameroon, Congo (Democratic Republic) and Uganda; it is assigned generic status ( Quamtana gen. nov .), and includes two species transferred from Pholcus [ Q. leptopholcica (Strand), Q. ciliata (Lawrence)] as well as 23 new species. A key to the pholcid spiders of South Africa is presented. The winter‐rainfall region of southern Africa, covered largely by the fynbos and succulent karoo biomes, harbours the world's greatest concentration of geophyte species. Species diversity is greatest in the south‐west, where more than 500 species co‐occur in one quarter‐degree square; in the south‐east the values are generally around 100, and in the arid north‐west, always less than 50 (more often less than 10). In at least three species‐rich genera (Moraea, Eriospermum and Oxalis), the size of storage organs (bulbs, corms, tubers) varies inversely, with the largest average values occurring in the species‐poorer areas — both in the north‐western, and in the south‐eastern parts of the region. This negative correlation between average storage organ size and species diversity is, however, only observed at relatively large spatial scales, which suggests that there is no direct relationship between storage organ size and species diversity. More likely, both these measures are driven by winter rainfall amount and reliability, both of which peak in the south‐western Cape. We suggest that reliable winter rainfall makes large storage organs unnecessary and depresses extinction rates, thus leading to the accumulation of species.  相似文献

Arctotis debensis R.J.McKenzie, a new species from the Albany Centre of Floristic Endemism, South Africa, is described and illustrated. It grows almost exclusively in grassland on kommetjies, a distinctive landform of depressions and mounds associated with giant earthworms, in a restricted area west of King William's Town, Eastern Cape Province. It is the first plant taxon reported to be endemic or near-endemic to this unusual habitat. The new species appears to have been collected rarely and previous collections examined have remained undetermined to species level. The new species is distinguished from closely allied species by the combination of its usually larger dimensions in all parts, prostrate habit, coriaceous leaves that are green, scabrous, and eglandular on the adaxial surface and densely lanate on the abaxial surface, and involucral-bract morphology.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 151 , 581–588.  相似文献

Questions

The degree to which renosterveld shrublands are fire‐dependent is currently unclear. To address this issue, the following questions were asked: (1) does smoke stimulate germination of soil‐stored seeds in renosterveld; (2) does recently‐burned renosterveld display changed composition and higher diversity than unburned vegetation; and (3) how do the species compositions of renosterveld soil seed banks and standing vegetation compare?

Location

Swartland, Cape Floristic Region, South Africa.

Methods

Soil seed bank samples from a north‐ and south‐facing slope were smoke‐treated and germinated to test for smoke‐stimulated germination. Burned standing vegetation was surveyed 16 months post‐fire, as was unburned vegetation on the same slopes. Seed bank species richness and density were compared between smoke‐treated and untreated samples within and between slopes. Burned and unburned standing vegetation were compared within and between slopes in terms of species richness, abundance and aerial cover. Compositional similarity of the seed banks and standing vegetation was assessed.

Results

Seed banks were dominated by annuals and graminoids. Smoke treatment had no effect, except for driving significantly higher species richness and seedling density in south‐facing slope perennial shrubs. Species richness and seedling density were significantly higher in seed banks on the south‐facing slope compared to the north‐facing slope. Burned standing vegetation exhibited significantly higher diversity than unburned vegetation. Annuals and graminoids displayed significantly higher species richness and aerial cover in burned renosterveld. The north‐facing slope contained less than half the number of species/m2 compared to the south‐facing slope. The seed banks and standing vegetation showed low to intermediate similarity (Sørensen = 31%–53%), but grouped close together on an NMDS plot, suggesting intermediate similarity overall.

Conclusions

Elevated germination of perennial shrubs in smoke‐treated seed bank samples and increased diversity of post‐fire standing vegetation suggest the renosterveld in this study shows elements of a fire‐driven system. Certain species only recruited in burned sites, suggesting fire‐stimulated germination. Aspect had a major influence on plant community composition, with the mesic south‐facing slope being more diverse than the xeric north‐facing slope. The similarity between the seed banks and standing vegetation was higher than previously shown for renosterveld, and appears to be higher than for fynbos.  相似文献

Scanning and electron microscopic studies of the pollen grains of several species of the sub-Saharan African and Madagascan genus Aristea of c . 50 species, supplement data from an earlier study and enable us to include these species in a phylogenetic analysis. TEM examination of a range of pollen grains of representative pollen types in Aristea makes it possible to reinterpret past SEM results so that apertures covered with exine masses and previously called sulculate, are now seen to be either zonasulculate or dizonasulculate. Revised and expanded data are combined in a matrix together with new data for seed morphology in the genus, which like the capsules is remarkably diverse, including angular seeds with reticulate sculpturing, lamellate or triangular-columnar seeds with smooth or reticulate surfaces and with smooth or papillate or areolate margins. This new phylogenetic analysis suggests that Aristea should remain treated as comprising three subgenera. In subgenus Eucapsulares we add a new section Latifolieae for A. latifolia , which seems an isolated relic restricted to the mountains of the Cape Region of South Africa, an area of winter rainfall. Species with similar unspecialized capsule and seed morphology occur only in eastern south and tropical Africa and Madagascar, but they have derived pollen morphology whereas the pollen of A. latifolia is plesiomorphic. This species appears to be the closest living ancestor of the genus. In subgenus Aristea we continue to recognize three sections, sect. Racemosae , sect. Singulares and sect. Aristea. Nesting of subgenus Pseudaristea within section Racemosae of subgenus Aristea is probably an artefact of the analysis and does not receive bootstrap support, and hence we continue to recognize this group of species at subgeneric rank.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 144 , 41–68.  相似文献

Biodiversity is spatially unevenly distributed and so is the information on its spatial patterns. This uneven distribution of information on species occurrences is an important impediment to the conservation of biodiversity. Based on 185 427 collection records of 5873 plant species in sub-Saharan Africa, we analyse the availability of distribution data suitable for the GIS-based mapping of plant diversity patterns at a one-degree resolution. Using the bioclimatic model GARP, distribution ranges for each species were modelled. In order to identify data-deficient areas, the documented and modelled diversity patterns were compared. Only for a few, well-known centres of plant diversity are there comparatively many data collection records available. For several of the areas with very few collection records, such as the Guinean montane forests, the north-western Congolian lowland forests, and the southern Albertine Rift montane forests, the model predicts a species richness much higher than currently documented. In many of the data deficient areas, difficult conditions for scientific research appear to have limited collection activities for decades. Only strategic field collections can fill these gaps. Another cause of data deficiency is that data collected and digitized do not match the quality requirements for GIS-based work at the super-regional scale. In particular, regional databases documenting partial ranges of species are rarely connected. In order to investigate continental-scale patterns of plant species richness and rarity, distribution maps of 3661 plant species were digitized into a one degree grid of sub-Saharan Africa using the WORLDMAP computer programme. Cells with high species richness were also likely to be those containing the greatest number of species of restricted range, but areas such as the South African Cape and the Eastern Arc mountains were found to have more restricted-range species than predicted from their richness scores. The two environmental predictors which had the strongest individual relationships with both species richness and range-size rarity were absolute maximum annual temperature and mean monthly potential evapotranspiration. However, correlative predictive powers of these variables were low, with R =−0.58 and R =−0.54, respectively ( P  < 0.01). Multiple regression also failed to produce a strong explanatory model for observed continental-scale patterns of diversity. Spatial variability analysis showed that this was likely to be because different environmental parameters predicted different centres of richness and rarity. The distribution maps of a total of 3563 species, which represent 8.9% of the known African angiosperm flora, were entered into cells representing a one-degree latitude–longitude grid of Sub-Saharan Africa. The computer programme WORLDMAP was used to explore continental scale patterns of biodiversity. The maps were used to assess the use of higher taxa as a surrogate measure for predicting patterns of species richness. Genera were found to predict species richness distributions most closely, with higher taxa (families, orders, subclasses) exhibiting progressively worse correlations. However in two areas, the Cape Region of South Africa and coastal Cameroon, there was a higher species to genus ratio than in other areas of Africa. In the Cape Region this meant that generic richness failed to predict species richness. Hotspots, defined as the 5% of grid cells with the highest scores for richness and range-size rarity, were identified for species and higher taxa. Whilst a high percentage of species richness hotspots were predicted by higher taxa, there were important exceptions like the Cape Region. Species range-size rarity hotspots were not well predicted by higher taxa. Hotspots of higher taxa (families and orders) do not therefore accurately predict the location of species hotspots. Higher taxa appear to provide a powerful and accurate tool that can be used to predict large scale patterns of species biodiversity in Sub-Saharan Africa. However care must be taken when using taxa higher than genera, especially if selecting areas of highest conservation priority. Species-rich, winter-rainfall, microphyllous Renosterveld vegetation in the Western Cape Province of South Africa has largely been transformed for production of wheat and wine. Remaining fragments thus have high conservation value. Abandoned old fields adjacent to natural vegetation fragments could potentially be restored as corridors and habitat for indigenous flora and fauna. We hypothesised that indigenous antelope maintained in a matrix of natural vegetation and abandoned field could play a role in restoration of Renoserveld via seed dispersal.We collected dung of indigenous ungulates in an abandoned field at various distances from natural Renosterveld vegetation, in order to assess the potential of large herbivores to contribute to restoration of plant diversity through seed dispersal. Emerged seedlings from the collected dung represented 29 forb, 13 grass, four sedge, four geophyte and one shrub species. The most abundant emerging seedlings were lawn grass Cynodon dactylon (38%), alien pasture grasses (31%) and indigenous geophyte Romulea rosea (12%). Whereas seeds of annual forbs and grasses were dispersed, only one shrub species was dispersed at very low density. We concluded that large herbivores could retard the rate of recovery of Renosterveld vegetation because viable seeds of herbaceous plants, particularly alien annual grasses and lawn-grasses were more abundant in the dung than the shrub, geophyte or perennial tussock grass species that characterise this vegetation type.  相似文献

A taxonomic revision of broad-leaved Potamogeton species ascribed to the ' P. schweinfurthii–thunbergii complex' occurring in Africa and on surrounding islands is presented. Three species, P. nodosus , P. richardii and P. schweinfurthii , are recognized in the African mainland. The widespread species P. nodosus has been widely overlooked in sub-Saharan Africa. It is recorded here for the first time from eight countries of tropical and southern Africa and from six surrounding islands. The distribution of P. richardii is critically revised and the species is recorded for the first time from Cameroon, Swaziland and Madagascar. P. schweinfurthii is recorded for the first time from Algeria, Tunisia, Burkina Faso and Niger. The nomenclature of all three species is revised. Lectotypes are designated for six names. All original material of the name P. thunbergii Cham. et Schltdl. actually belongs to P. nodosus Poir. The correct name for the East and southern African species called ' P. thunbergii ' is P. richardii Solms. The lectotype of P. schweinfurthii designated by Dandy proved to be P. nodosus . A new type is therefore proposed for the species generally named P. schweinfurthii and the name itself is proposed for conservation. The morphology and stem anatomy of P. nodosus , P. richardii and P. schweinfurthii are described. In spite of some overlaps in the morphological variation in their vegetative characters, a detailed analysis of the variation patterns and instructions for reliable identification are given. The distributions of all three species are described, based solely on reliably identified specimens, many of which were also examined anatomically. Klasea , traditionally treated as a section in Serratula , is now widely accepted at the generic level. A classification of the genus is presented here, accommodating the 46 species in ten sections based on nuclear ribosomal DNA external and internal transcribed spacer sequence data and morphology. New combinations for five species and ten subspecies are published, and a new hybrid species is described. The genus ranges from the Iberian Peninsula and north Africa through southern and eastern Europe, west and central Asia to the Himalayas, and the Far East of Russia and China. The ancestral area is in west Asia, most probably eastern Anatolia and northern and western Iran. In this region, representatives of all sections are present. The largest section Klasea diversified most likely in the mountains of central Asia. The monsoon affected mountains of the southern Arabian Peninsula harbour in climatically favoured refugia vegetation elements of palaeo-African origin. To understand better the temporal and spatial differentiation of these refugia, chloroplast variation in Justicia areysiana Deflers (Acanthaceae), a shrub species endemic to the Yemeni and Omani mountains close to the Arabian Sea, was studied using PCR-RFLP and chloroplast microsatellite diversity. Eleven haplotypes were characterized and show a distinct geographical distribution pattern with a deep split between populations from south Yemeni fog oases and those from Hawf Mountains/Dhofar region in east Yemen and south Oman. Very limited haplotype diversity within populations (hS = 0.15) and a high level of population differentiation (GST = 0.81) demonstrate the strong genetic isolation of populations from each other. Gondwanan biogeography has fascinated zoologists and botanists for over a century, but most biogeographical work has used continent-scale areas as analytical units. More finely resolved patterns, as can be obtained from small invertebrates with limited dispersal abilities, will be obscured in those studies. A common case is treating Australia as a single biogeographical region. In the present study, the necessity of splitting Australia into multiple microareas is demonstrated using centipedes as an example. The lithobiomorph centipede Paralamyctes is distributed on fragments of Gondwana, with species in southern Africa, Madagascar, southern India, Patagonia, eastern Australia, and New Zealand. A cladogram for Paralamyctes is based on morphology and sequences for four molecular markers for 30 terminals that sample 20 of 26 known ingroup species and four outgroups. Analysis with direct optimization across a range of indel costs and transversion : transition cost ratios identifies two main clades: Paralamyctes ( Paralamyctes ) unites species from southern Africa, Madagascar, tropical and warm temperate Australia, and New Zealand. The other group includes the temperate Australian/New Zealand Paralamyctes ( Haasiella ) and Paralamyctes ( Thingathinga ) and a Chilean clade. Subtree analysis finds that different parts of Australia have closest affinities to other Gondwanan fragments, and some of these relationships (such as that between north Queensland and New Zealand) are based on taxonomically stable clades. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) was used to characterize genetic diversity of the endangered Burnt Orchid, Neotinea (formerly Orchis ) ustulata . Fingerprinting of Estonian and British populations revealed surprisingly little genetic differentiation between populations but larger amounts of diversity within populations, especially in Britain. The resulting mean F st value of 0.51 is unusually high for an orchid species. Much of the variation follows a west–east cline across Europe, whereas the much-discussed early- and late-flowering taxa of N. ustulata are considered insufficiently distinct to be viewed as separate subspecies. The later flowering N. ustulata var. aestivalis probably evolved independently on two or three occasions, each time diverging from the earlier flowering nominate race. The identity of the genes underpinning phenology in the species, and the potential selective advantages of phenological divergence, merit further study. Chromosome study of the fern genus Cyrtomium (Dryopteridaceae)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Cyrtomium (Dryopteridaceae) is an Asiatic genus comprising about 40 species characterized by having anastomosing veins that form areolae with included veinlets. Twelve chromosome counts representing 11 taxa were made in the present study. The chromosome numbers of six species endemic to China are reported for the first time: C. uniseriale , 2 n  = 164; C. guizhouense , 2 n  = 82; C. shingianum , n  = 82, 2 n  =  c .164; C. chingianum , 2 n  = 164; C. urophyllum , 2 n  = 82 and C. aequibasis , 2 n  = 123. The results were used to show that (1) C. uniseriale should be reduced to varietal status under C. balansae ; (2) subseries Balansana is not closely related to any other Cyrtomium species and should be separated from Cyrtomium ; and (3) C. guizhouense and C. lonchitoides are basal groups when subseries Balansana is not considered. These results were also supported by morphology. A high level of differentiation is a distinct characteristic in Cyrtomium . The genus has two reproductive types: sexual and apogamous. Sexual species are distributed mostly in China. Southwestern China is a modern diversity centre of Cyrtomium , with 80.6% of known species occurring there. Many species are endemic, most of which are sexual tetraploids or apogamous triploids.
