  • 1 Freshwater fish assemblages were sampled quantitatively before, during, and after naturally produced conditions of elevated pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) that occurred for 2–6h in two dense macrophyte beds. Field observations were followed by 3–4-h laboratory behavioural experiments in which banded killifish (Fundulus diaphanus), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), and striped bass (Morone saxatilis) were exposed to gradually increasing levels of: (i) pH; (ii) DO; and (iii) pH and DO.
  • 2 Field results indicated that the macrophyte bed dominated by Hydrilla verticillata had a higher fish density than the mixed-species (H. verticillata and Vailisneria americana) bed, but beds did not differ significantly in fish species richness or biomass. Within beds, diel changes in fish species composition, richness, density and biomass were minor.
  • 3 In the laboratory, avoidance of pH levels exceeding 9.5 was exhibited by all species tested. No significant response was observed to either DO increase treatments, or to pH and DO increase treatments.
  • 4 Results suggest fishes do not avoid areas, such as dense macrophyte beds, when high pH levels (9.5–10.0) are accompanied by high DO levels (200–260% saturation).

Gymnotiform electric fish assemblage structure is strongly correlated to dissolved oxygen (DO) availability, which exhibits considerable heterogeneity among Amazonian aquatic systems. DO is known to influence the respiratory morphology of gymnotiform fishes, and yet species-level variation among congeners endemic to alternative DO regimes has not been examined. We describe the DO environment experienced by four congeneric species of gymnotiforms (Brachyhypopomus) and correlate this to quantitative variation in a suite of gill metrics. Whitewater floodplain lakes flanking nutrient-rich whitewater rivers are seasonally hypoxic, exhibiting oxygen concentrations close to 0 mg/l from late April until September. In contrast, DO levels in blackwater floodplain lakes and in terra firme forest stream habitats remain high throughout the year. Two common species of Brachyhypopomus restricted to periodically anoxic whitewater floodplain exhibited a substantially greater gill size than two common species restricted to the perpetually well-oxygenated waters of blackwater floodplain lakes and terra firme stream systems. Discriminant Function Analysis (DFA) based on gill metrics separated the species that live in seasonally anoxic whitewater floodplain species from those that live in perpetually-well oxygenated habitats. Our observations suggest a history of adaptive divergence in the gill morphology of Brachyhypopomus associated with oxygen availability.  相似文献

Resistance to Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, Amblyomma variegatum and Amblyomma hebraeum was investigated in the laboratory by infesting rabbits with adults of each of the three species followed by homospecific or heterospecific secondary infestations. Significantly lower female engorged weights and egg mass weights were taken as evidence of protective immunity. Following a single infestation with adults, rabbits developed homospecific protective immunity (resistance) to only R. appendiculatus and A. hebraeum; primary infestation with A variegatum did not protect against secondary infestation with the same species. There was no cross-resistance (heterospecific protective immunity) between the species except for one-way protection between R. appendiculatus and A. variegatum; primary infestation with R. appendiculatus protected against secondary infestation with A. variegatum, but not vice versa. The results from ELISA did not indicate any correlation between serum antibodies to soluble antigens from salivary gland extracts and protective immunity. Post-infestation sera from rabbits infested with each of the three species reacted strongly to their respective salivary gland extracts. Despite the high reactivity of A. variegatum serum with salivary gland antigens from all three species, A. variegatum-infested rabbits did not show any homospecific or heterospecific immunity; on the other hand, although R. appendiculatus serum did not react positively to A. variegatum antigens, infestation with R. appendiculatus protected against a subsequent A. variegatum infestation.  相似文献

The rate of oxygen consumption (OC) of 9 species of freshwater mussels was measured under declining dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. The effects of temperature for some species also was investigated. The pattern of the OC vs. DO curve for each species was used in a hyperbolic model to compare abilities to regulate OC under low oxygen conditions. At 24.5 °C, Pyganodon grandis (from lakes), Amblema plicata and Quadrula pustulosa (from mud or sand in large rivers), Elliptio complanata (from pool areas in rivers), and Elliptio fisheriana and Elliptio lanceolata (from bank margins of rivers) were better able to maintain OC under low DO than were Villosa iris and Villosa constricta (which inhabit riffles) and Pleurobema cordatum (found in rivers with moderate flow). Villosa iris was especially sensitive to low oxygen conditions. The ability to maintain normal OC at low DO was improved considerably at 16.5 °C for V. iris, P. grandis and E. complanata. It is concluded that oxygen regulation ability appears to be related to the degree of hypoxia a species normally experiences in its habitat type, and it is enhanced at low temperature. The measurement of OC vs. DO may be a useful technique for estimating DO water quality criteria for endangered species because it is noninvasive.  相似文献

The odonate larval communities in three small rivers in Penang Island were studied. More species of dragonflies were found in the Botanical Garden and Titi Teras rivers (13 and 11 respectively) of relatively similar environmental parameters. Fewer (nine) dragonfly species were collected from the Youth Park River which has a lower dissolved oxygen (DO) and a higher biological oxygen demand (BOD), conductivity and turbidity. A mixture of sand, gravel and pebble substrate of Botanical Garden River with dense growth of submerged Hydrilla, grasses and Cladias (Araceae) provided suitable habitats for the dragonflies. The sandy substrate and relatively fast flowing water of Titi Teras River was highly preferred by gomphids. In the Youth Park River, the small community of dragonfly larvae was dominated by tolerant Pseudagrion rubriceps, P. microcephalum, Orthetrum chrysis and Crocothemis servilia. Based on the larval instar distribution of Ictinogomphus decoratus and O. chrysis, very asynchronous populations of these dragonflies occurred in each river. Young larvae were continuously introduced into the populations resulting in undulating growth rate curves. The growth rates of these two species were higher in the Titi Teras River when compared to those in other rivers. Density-dependent mortality, asynchronous cannibalism and fish predation could play important roles in regulating the larval dragonfly population in these rivers.  相似文献

Summary During the rapid growth phase ofStreptomyces clavuligerus in a 10 litre fermentor, the level of dissolved oxygen (DO) was found to drop to almost zero for a period of approximately 10 h, delaying the appearance of and lowering the production of the antibiotic cephamycin C. Controlling the DO at either 50% or 100% throughout the fermentation did not significantly alter the specific growth rate of the culture, but did elevate final antibiotic levels two- and three-fold respectively. The improved oxygen availability affected antibiotic production both by increasing the rate of specific cephamycin C bisosynthesis and by maintaining this higher rate throughout the production period. These results demonstrate that controlling dissolved oxygen levels close to saturation during periods of rapid growth markedly improves the efficiency and duration of cephamycin C biosynthesis inS. clavuligerus.  相似文献

Chinese oak silkworm (Antheraea pernyi) and mulberry silkworm (Bombyx mori) are economically important insects used for silk production and food resource. Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) from the families of Steinernematidae and Heterorhabditidae are beneficial organisms currently considered in biological control. In this paper, we evaluated survival of two silkworm species exposed to four Steinernema species which are widely applied in pest control. The results showed that among four Steinernema species, S. bicornutum and S. feltiae did not have an effect on the larval survival to the two silkworm species, whereas S. carpocapsae and S. glaseri did have an effect. Each Steinernema species poses no threat to hatchability of eggs, pupation rate, larval durations and cocoon shell ratio.  相似文献

In lakes that experience seasonal ice cover, understanding of nitrogen–oxygen coupling and nitrification has been dominated by observations during open water, ice-free conditions. To address knowledge gaps about nitrogen–oxygen linkages under ice, we examined long-term winter data (30 + years, 2–3 sample events per winter) in 7 temperate lakes of forested northern Wisconsin, USA. Across lakes and depths, there were strong negative relationships between dissolved oxygen (DO) and the number of days since ice-on, reflecting consistent DO consumption rates under ice. In two bog lakes that routinely experience prolonged winter DO concentrations below 1.0 mg L?1, nitrate accumulated near the ice surface mainly in late winter, suggesting nitrification may depend on biogenic oxygen from photosynthesis. In contrast, within five oligotrophic-mesotrophic lakes, nitrate accumulated more consistently over winter and often throughout the water column, especially at intermediate depths. Exogenous inputs of nitrate to these lakes were minimal compared to rates of nitrate accumulation. To produce the nitrate via in-lake nitrification, substantial oxygen consumption by ammonium oxidizing microbes would be required. Among lakes and depths that had significant DO depletion over winter, the stoichiometric nitrifier oxygen demand ranged from 1 to 25% of the DO depletion rate. These estimates of nitrifier-driven DO decline are likely conservative because we did not account for nitrate consumed by algal uptake or denitrification. Our results provide an example of nitrification at temperatures < 5 degrees C having a substantial influence on ecosystem-level nitrogen and oxygen availability in seasonally-frozen, northern forested lakes. Consequently, models of under-ice dissolved oxygen dynamics may be advanced through consideration of nitrification, and more broadly, coupled nitrogen and oxygen cycling.  相似文献

Biofilm‐related research using 96‐well microtiter plates involves static incubation of plates indiscriminate of environmental conditions, making oxygen availability an important variable which has not been considered to date. By directly measuring dissolved oxygen concentration over time we report here that dissolved oxygen is rapidly consumed in Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilm cultures grown in 96‐well plates irrespective of the oxygen concentration in the gaseous environment in which the plates are incubated. These data indicate that depletion of dissolved oxygen during growth of bacterial biofilm cultures in 96‐well plates may significantly influence biofilm production. Furthermore higher inoculum cell concentrations are associated with more rapid consumption of dissolved oxygen and higher levels of S. epidermidis biofilm production. Our data reveal that oxygen depletion during bacterial growth in 96‐well plates may significantly influence biofilm production and should be considered in the interpretation of experimental data using this biofilm model. 采用高通量测序-分子鉴定分级技术于2019年对长山群岛全海域真核微藻粒级结构进行了研究。结果发现,春季以中(47%)、小粒级(41%)为主,夏季以小(39%)、大粒级(38%)为主,秋季以大粒级(60%)为主,春、夏、秋季小、中、大粒级微藻比例为42:47:11、39:23:38、22:18:60。小粒级微藻优势种为细小微胞藻(Micromonas pusilla)、融合微胞藻(Micromonas commoda)和金牛微球藻(Ostreococcus tauri),中粒级微藻优势种为剧毒卡尔藻(Karlodinium veneficum)、大粒级微藻优势种为柔弱几内亚藻(Guinardia delicatula)、平野亚历山大藻(Alexandrium hiranoi)、多纹膝沟藻(Gonyaulax polygramma),综合整个真核微藻群落,春季由中粒径的剧毒卡尔藻占据优势(23.9%),夏季由大粒径的平野亚历山大藻占据优势(29.4%),秋季由大粒径的多纹膝沟藻占据优势(66.8%),有毒甲藻在该海域中占有绝对优势,贝毒累积风险较高,小粒径微藻中金牛微球藻和抑食金球藻曾在渤海引发褐潮,潜在威胁该海域贝类养殖业。虾夷扇贝对小粒级和大粒级微藻的选择性较低,对中粒级微藻的选择性较高,尤其对水体中优势种剧毒卡尔藻一直表现出主动选择。光学需氧量、无机氮、溶解氧、石油类及部分重金属Cd、As、Hg影响着整个长山群岛海域真核微藻粒级结构时空演变。  相似文献

Summary Using the method of equi-inocular synchronized comparative fermentation (EISCF) the cultivation of Sorangium cellulosum So ce 10 and production of the polyketide antibiotic ambruticin S was compared in stirred-tank and air-lift reactors of different geometry. This method requires that inocula originate from the same pre-culture and cultivation parameters are synchronized to similar values. Similar ambruticin yields were obtained from both reactor systems provided that the concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) was maintained above a certain value (ca. 40%). For cultivation of S. cellulosum it is the DO level rather than the oxygen transfer rate which presents the proper criterion for scale-up and comparative reactor studies. Offprint requests to: W.-D. Habitat selection is a shared process among animals where individuals choose areas that differ in biotic and abiotic characteristics to maximize individual fitness. We used manipulative laboratory mesocosm choice experiments to examine hierarchical and interactive relationships influencing this habitat selection process of estuarine fishes. We assessed selection among substrate, dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, food availability, and predation risk using two common juvenile estuarine fish species, pinfish (Lagodon rhomboides) and Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus). For both species oxygen concentration greatly influenced selection patterns; fishes strongly avoided low DO conditions, while in higher levels of DO factors such as substrate or food influenced selection patterns. However, both species strongly avoided predators even when alternative habitat was severely oxygen limited. These results suggest that predation risk may be the greatest determinant of habitat selection of the factors considered. Expansion of low DO areas in the world’s oceans is a major anthropogenic disturbance and is rapidly increasing. Assessing impacts of hypoxia on habitat usage of mobile organisms is critical as changes in environmental metrics including predator distribution and DO levels may alter habitat selection patterns disrupting critical ecosystem processes and trophic interactions. Our results indicate that juvenile fishes may forgo emigration from hypoxia due to predation risk. If similar patterns occur for juvenile fishes in estuaries they may potentially suffer from reduced growth, reproductive output, and survivorship.  相似文献

The amount of energy available to larvae during swimming, location of a suitable recruitment site, and metamorphosis influences the length of time they can spend in the plankton. Energetic parameters such as swimming speed, oxygen consumption during swimming and metamorphosis, and elemental carbon and nitrogen content were measured for larvae of four species of bryozoans, Bugula neritina, B. simplex, B. stolonifera, and B. turrita. The larvae of these species are aplanktotrophic with a short free-swimming phase ranging from less than one hour to a maximum of about 36 hours. There is about a fivefold difference in larval volume among the four species, which scales linearly with elemental carbon content and, presumably, with the amount of endogenous reserves available for swimming and metamorphosis. Mean larval swimming speeds (in centimeters per second) were similar among species. Specific metabolic rate and larval size were inversely related. For larvae of a given species, respiration rates remained similar for swimming and metamorphosis; however, because metamorphosis lasts about twice as long as a maximal larval swimming phase, it was more energetically demanding. Larger larvae expended more energy to complete metamorphosis than did smaller larvae, but in terms of the percentage of larval energy reserves consumed, swimming and metamorphosis were more "expensive" for smaller larvae. A comparison of the energy expended during larval swimming calculated on the basis of oxygen consumption and on the basis of elemental carbon decrease suggests that larvae of Bugula spp. may not use significant amounts of dissolved organic material (DOM) to supplement their endogenous energy reserves.  相似文献

1. The gradient in pond canopy cover strongly influences freshwater species distributions. This study tested the effects of canopy cover on the performance of two species of larval anurans, a canopy cover generalist (Rana sylvatica, the wood frog) and an open‐canopy specialist (R. pipiens, the leopard frog), and tested which factors co‐varying with canopy cover mediate these effects. 2. A field transplant experiment demonstrated that canopy cover had negative performance effects on both species. However, leopard frogs, which grow faster than wood frogs in open‐canopy ponds, were more strongly affected by closed‐canopy pond conditions. 3. Closed‐canopy ponds had lower temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and food nutritional quality as indicated by carbon‐to‐nitrogen ratio (C : N) analysis of field‐sampled food types, and of gut contents of transplanted larvae. 4. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that higher temperature and food quality but not DO substantially increased larval growth. However, only food quality increased growth rates of leopard frogs more than wood frogs. 5. The strong correlation of growth rates to gut content C : N in the field, and the similarity of growth curves as a function of resource quality in the field and laboratory, strongly suggest that resources are of primary importance in mediating intraspecific, and especially interspecific differences in performance across the canopy cover gradient.  相似文献

The growth kinetics, sporulation, and toxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis were evaluated through the analysis of batch cultures with different dissolved oxygen (DO) profiles. Firstly, DO was maintained constant at 5%, 20%, or 50% throughout fermentation in order to identify the most suitable one to improve the main process parameters. Higher biomass concentration, cell productivity, and cell yield based on glucose were obtained with 50% DO. The higher aeration level also resulted in higher spore counts and markedly improved the toxic activity of the fermentation broth, which was 9-fold greater than that obtained with 5% DO (LC50 of 39 and 329 mg/L, respectively). Subsequently, using a two-stage oxygen supply strategy, DO was kept at 50% during the vegetative and transition phases until the maximum cell concentration was achieved. Then, DO was changed to 0%, 5%, 20%, or 100% throughout sporulation and cell lysis phases. The interruption of oxygen supply strongly reduced the spore production and thoroughly repressed the toxin synthesis. On the contrary, when DO was raised to 100% of saturation, toxic activity increased approximately four times (LC50 of 8.2 mg/L) in comparison with the mean values reached with lower DO levels, even though spore counts were lower than that from the 50% DO assay. When pure oxygen was used instead of normal air, it was possible to obtain 70% of the total biomass concentration achieved in the air assays; however, cultures did not sporulate and the toxin synthesis was consequently suppressed.  相似文献

Forecasts from climate models and oceanographic observations indicate increasing deoxygenation in the global oceans and an elevated frequency and intensity of hypoxic events in the coastal zone, which have the potential to affect marine biodiversity and fisheries. Exposure to low dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions may have deleterious effects on early life stages in fishes. This study aims to identify thresholds to hypoxia while testing behavioral and physiological responses of two congeneric species of kelp forest fish to four DO levels, ranging from normoxic to hypoxic (8.7, 6.0, 4.1, and 2.2 mg O2/L). Behavioral tests identified changes in exploratory behavior and turning bias (lateralization), whereas physiological tests focused on determining changes in hypoxia tolerance (pCrit), ventilation rates, and metabolic rates, with impacts on the resulting capacity for aerobic activity. Our findings indicated that copper rockfish (Sebastes caurinus) and blue rockfish (Sebastes mystinus) express sensitivity to hypoxia; however, the strength of the response differed between species. Copper rockfish exhibited reduced absolute lateralization and increased escape time at the lowest DO levels, whereas behavioral metrics for blue rockfish did not vary with oxygen level. Both species exhibited decreases in aerobic scope (as a function of reduced maximum metabolic rate) and increases in ventilation rates to compensate for decreasing oxygen levels. Blue rockfish had a lower pCrit and stronger acclimation response compared to copper rockfish. The differences expressed by each species suggest that acclimatization to changing ocean conditions may vary, even among related species that recruit to the same kelp forest habitat, leading to winners and losers under future ocean conditions. Exposure to hypoxia can decrease individual physiological fitness through metabolic and aerobic depression and changes to anti‐predator behavior, with implications for the outcome of ecological interactions and the management of fish stocks in the face of climate change.  相似文献

The golden mussel Limnoperna fortunei is a freshwater bivalve that adheres to water intake facilities, leading to problems of several kinds. Biofouling problems have been increasing recently in East Asia and South America, and the planktonic stage of this species is considered to play an important role in its dispersal. We investigated the larval dynamics of L. fortunei in two reservoirs, Lake Ohshio and Lake Takenuma, which are connected by a headrace channel. An aeration system for water quality conservation was present in the former reservoir but not in the latter. Larval density in Lake Ohshio was more than 10,000 individuals/m3 with a maximum of 80,000 individuals/m3 in summer. The density in Lake Takenuma was much lower, with a maximum of around 200 individuals/m3. Water temperature (WT) and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration were almost uniform regardless of water depth in Lake Ohshio because of destratification due to continuous aeration. Summer WT and DO in the lake were considered to be suitable for survival and reproduction of L. fortunei. On the other hand, stratification was found for WT and DO in Lake Takenuma throughout the summer. The low WT and DO found in the deep areas of the lake in summer were considered to be not suitable for survival and reproduction of this species. Thus, the population of L. fortunei larvae differed widely even in two adjoining lakes, and WT and DO are considered to be critical factors, especially for reproduction.  相似文献

Long-term changes in the macrofauna of the Pomeranian Bay were studied by comparing survey data from the 1950s, 1980s, and 1990s. The study area has undergone significant eutrophication during the period of investigation. Biomass of filter-feeding bivalves increased significantly. Spatial distribution patterns of several species have changed. Strong decreases in species richness were caused by oxygen depletion at stations deeper than 15 m.Saduria entomon, Monoporeia affinis, andPontoporeia femorata vanished entirely between 1981 and 1993. Although a causal relationship between simultaneous increases of nutrient levels and macrobenthic biomass cannot be verified, eutrophication is proposed to be the major process affecing changes in macrofauna assemblages. In addition, changes in hydrography and climate increased frequency and severity of oxygen depletion events in the Pomeranian Bay since the mid 1980s.  相似文献

ATP-citrate lyase (ACL) is the key cytoplasmic enzyme which supplies acetyl-CoA for fatty acids in oleaginous yeast. Although it has been suggested that fatty acid and carotenoid biosynthesis may have a common source of acetyl-CoA in Phaffia rhodozyma, the source for carotenoids is currently unknown. The purpose of this work was to analyze the development of ACL activity during batch cultures of P. rhodozyma under ammonium-limited and nonammonium-limited conditions and study its possible relationship with carotenoid synthesis. Every experiment showed carotenoid accumulation linked to an increasing ACL activity. Moreover, the ACL activity increased with dissolved oxygen (DO), i.e., ACL responded to DO in a similar way as carotenoid synthesis. Additionally, in the ammonium-limited culture, ACL activity increased upon ammonium depletion. However, the contribution to carotenoid accumulation in that case was negligible. This suggests that P. rhodozyma has developed two components of ACL, each one responsive to a different environmental stimulus, i.e., DO and ammonium depletion. The role of each component is still unknown; however, considering that the former responds to DO and the known role of carotenoids as antioxidants, it may be a provider of acetyl-CoA for carotenoid synthesis.  相似文献

Three low molecular weight compounds were found in hexane: diethyl ether extracts of fed males of the African ticks,Amblyomma variegatum (tropical bont tick) andA. hebraeum (bont tick), namely,o-nitrophenol, methyl salicylate and 2,6-dichlorophenol. These same compounds were also found in a rinse of fedA. variegatum males, but were absent or present in only trace amounts in a rinse of fedA. hebraeum males.o-Nitrophenol and methyl salicylate were present in much higher concentrations (i.e., amounts/tick) inA. variegatum than inA. hebraeum. 2,6-Dichlorophenol was also more abundant inA. variegatum than inA. hebraeum, but the differences were not as great as with the former two compounds. Extraction in hexane over a 3-week period revealed four additional compounds, benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, benzothiazole and nonanoic acid. The first three compounds were found in males of both species; nonanoic acid was found only inA. hebraeum males. Published reports consistently show strong attraction byo-nitrophenol and methyl salicylate for both sexes of the two bont tick species; 2,6-dichlorophenol and benzaldehyde have been reported to be attractive to both sexes ofA. hebraeum.
