Introgressive hybridization poses a threat to the genetic integrity of black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou) and blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) populations in South Africa. Black wildebeest is endemic to South Africa and was driven to near extinction in the early 1900s due to habitat destruction, hunting pressure and disease outbreaks. Blue wildebeest on the other hand are widely distributed in southern and east Africa. In South Africa the natural distribution ranges of both species overlap, however, extensive translocation of black wildebeest outside of its normal distribution range in South Africa have led to potential hybridization between the two species. The molecular identification of pure and admixed populations is necessary to design viable and sustainable conservation strategies, since phenotypic evidence of hybridization is inconclusive after successive generations of backcrossing. The aim of this study was to assess levels of hybridization in wildebeest using both species-specific and cross-species microsatellite markers. Black wildebeest (157) and blue wildebeest (122) from provincial and national parks and private localities were included as reference material, with 180 putative hybrid animals also screened. A molecular marker panel consisting of 13 cross-species and 11 species-specific microsatellite markers was developed. We used a Bayesian clustering model to confirm the uniqueness of blue- and black wildebeest reference groups, assign individuals to each of the two clusters, and determine levels of admixture. Results indicated a clear partition between black wildebeest and blue wildebeest (the average proportions of membership to black wildebeest and blue wildebeest clusters were QI?=?0.994 and QI?=?0.955 respectively). From the putative hybrid samples, only five hybrid individuals were confirmed. However, high levels of linkage disequilibrium were observed in the putative hybrid populations which may indicate historical hybridization. Measures of genetic diversity in the black wildebeest populations were found to be lower than that of the blue wildebeest. The observed lower level of genetic diversity was expected due to the demographic history of the specie. This study will make a significant contribution to inform a national conservation strategy to conserve the genetic integrity of both species.  相似文献

The blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) is distributed throughout southern and east Africa while the black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou) is endemic to South Africa and was driven to near extinction in the early 1900s due to hunting pressure and disease outbreaks. Extensive translocation of both species throughout South Africa is threatening the genetic integrity of blue and black wildebeest. To effectively manage these species, genetic tools that can be used to detect hybrid individuals, identify genetically unique subpopulations and determine the levels of genetic diversity are required. In this study, 11 microsatellite markers were developed for wildebeest through next-generation sequencing. The microsatellite loci displayed 2.00–4.14 alleles, unbiased heterozygosity values ranged from 0.32 to 0.60 and observed heterozygosity values ranged from 0.26 to 0.52. The comparatively high level of polymorphism observed in the microsatellite markers indicates that these markers can contribute significantly to our knowledge of population genetic structure, relatedness, genetic diversity and hybridization in these species.  相似文献

We recorded the body axis orientation of free-living black wildebeest relative to incident solar radiation and wind. Observations were made on three consecutive days, on six occasions over the course of 1 year, in a treeless, predominantly cloudless habitat. Frequency of orientation parallel to incident solar radiation increased, and perpendicular to incident solar radiation decreased, as ambient dry-bulb temperature or solar radiation intensity increased, or wind speed decreased. We believe these changes were mediated via their effect on skin temperature. Parallel orientation behavior was more prominent when the wildebeest were standing without feeding than it was when they were feeding. We calculate that a black wildebeest adopting parallel orientation throughout the diurnal period would absorb 30% less radiant heat than the same animal adopting perpendicular orientation. Parallel orientation was reduced at times when water was freely available, possibly reflecting a shift from behavioral to autonomic thermoregulatory mechanisms. The use of orientation behavior by black wildebeest is well developed and forms part of the suite of adaptations that help them to maintain heat balance while living in a shadeless, often hot, environment.  相似文献

The feeding ecology of the spotted hyena Crocuta crocuta was studied in the central and eastern part of the Etosha National Park, Namibia. Hyenas mainly hunted migratory ungulates such as springbok Antidorcas marsupialis, zebra Equus burchelli, and blue wildebeest Connochaetes taurinus, but also resident species such as the greater kudu Tragelaphus strepsiceros and gemsbok Oryx gazella. There were, however, major differences in the species most frequently killed by hyenas in central and eastern Etosha. The preferred prey species of spotted hyenas in central Etosha was springbok, whereas regarding the abundance of zebra and wildebeest, these two species were rather avoided. In contrast, the prey species preferred by hyenas in eastern Etosha was kudu. Zebra and gemsbok were taken in proportion to their abundance, whereas wildebeest and springbok seemed to be rather avoided. Differences in prey selection and preferences were also reflected in differences in hunting group sizes. In eastern Etosha, where spotted hyenas frequently hunted larger prey, hunting group sizes were significantly larger compared to those in the center of the park.  相似文献

The nychthemeral activity patterns of a population of female black wildebeest inhabiting a shadeless environment were surveyed periodically over 1 year. The wildebeest fed mostly at night, with the proportion of feeding at night increasing when ambient conditions were hotter. Inactive periods were spent mostly lying during cooler weather but standing as days became hotter. We suggest that the entire suite of behavioural adjustments is beneficial to heat exchange with the environment. Behaviour patterns were markedly different during one warm weather survey, from the other warm weather surveys, when an 8-month dry spell had just been broken. We suggest that this may reflect the availability of water for autonomic thermoregulation, a consequent decreased reliance on behavioural thermoregulation, and a release of the thermal constraints on foraging. Our results help to explain the ability of black wildebeest to maintain body core temperature within a very narrow range despite being exposed to an environment with large nychthemeral variations in thermal conditions and offering little in the way of microclimate selection.  相似文献

Rumen contents from four blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) and six black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou) were collected from two locations during two winter culling seasons. A total of 16 species of protozoa were found in blue wildebeest with Dasytricha ruminantium, Opisthotrichum janus and Ostracodinium gracile occurring in all four animals. In black wildebeest, 23 species of protozoa were observed with only Diplodinium bubalidis (caudal spine morphotype) and Ostracodinium damaliscus being present in all animals. In the blue wildebeest, the total number of species in an individual animal varied from 9 to 11 and in the black wildebeest, the number ranged from 4 to 14. Concentrations of cells per ml ranged from 1110 to 5880 in the blue wildebeest and 3120 to 6240 in the black wildebeest. This study is the first report on protozoa species in the blue and black wildebeest. A new species of Entodinium is described, Entodinium taurinus n. sp., observed in the rumen contents of three blue wildebeest. Several physical parameters of the digestive tract were also measured, including distribution, pH and density of gastrointestinal contents in different sections of the total tract. In vitro gas production was estimated for rumen, cecum and colon contents.  相似文献

Many ungulates, including wildebeest, seek shade and orient their bodies relative to incoming solar radiation in order to reduce environmental heat loads. Blue (Connochaetes taurinus) and black wildebeest (Connochaetes gnou), which co-exist artificially in some reserves in South Africa, are thought to adopt different thermoregulatory behaviors to mitigate high environmental heat loads. However, whether or not blue and black wildebeest use different behaviors to reduce heat loads in regions where they co-occur has never previously been examined. We compared the shade seeking and solar orientation behavior of free-ranging blue and black wildebeest in summer at three locations in South Africa where both species co-occur. We found that blue wildebeest exhibited more shade seeking behavior than did black wildebeest at all times of day, at all study sites. Black wildebeest remained in the sun but were more likely than blue wildebeest to orient their bodies parallel to the sun at all study sites, a behavior which reduces the amount of surface area exposed to incoming radiation. Black wildebeest were most likely to employ parallel solar orientation during the hottest times of the day when the sun was not directly overhead (i.e., solar noon ± 1 hour). We thus demonstrate that co-occurring blue and black wildebeest use different thermoregulatory behaviors to reduce high heat loads. It is possible that the lack of shade in the historical distribution of black wildebeest led to selective pressure for reliance on solar orientation. Differences in thermoregulatory behavior can affect species-specific heat loads, habitat use, body mass, fitness and grazing activity. Such differences may also allow blue and black wildebeest to inhabit separate microclimates within the same habitat, provided there is sufficient heterogeneity in vegetation structure, potentially facilitating reproductive isolation.  相似文献

Most Malagasy primate communities harbor a diverse assemblage of omnivorous species. The mechanisms allowing the coexistence of closely related species are poorly understood, partly because only preliminary data on the feeding ecology of most species are available. We provide an exemplary feeding ecology data set to illuminate coexistence mechanisms between sympatric gray and Madame Berthe’s mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus, M. berthae). We studied their feeding ecology in Kirindy Forest/CFPF, a highly seasonal dry deciduous forest in western Madagascar. Between August 2002 and December 2007, we regularly (re-)captured, marked, and radiotracked females of both species. A combination of direct behavioral observations and fecal analyses revealed that both Microcebus species used fruit, arthropods, gum, insect secretions, and small vertebrates as food sources. However, Microcebus berthae and M. murinus differed in both composition and seasonal variation of their diets. Whereas the diet of Microcebus murinus varied seasonally and was generally more diverse, M. berthae relied mainly on insect secretions supplemented by animal matter. The differences were also reflected in a very narrow feeding niche of Microcebus berthae and a comparatively broad feeding niche of M. murinus. Resource use patterns of Madame Berthe’s and more so of opportunistic gray mouse lemurs broadly followed resource availability within the strongly seasonal dry forest. Feeding niche overlap between the 2 sympatric species was high, indicating that food resource usage patterns did not reflect niche partitioning, but can instead be explained by constraints due to food availability.  相似文献

The feeding habits and trophic ecology of Mustelus lunulatus and Mustelus henlei in the central coast of the Colombian Pacific were evaluated and compared to determine whether there was trophic niche overlap or resource partitioning between these two sympatric shark species. A total of 59 prey items were identified and grouped into 10 taxonomic categories. Mustelus lunulatus fed in large proportion on Stomatopoda and Brachyura, whereas M. henlei fed almost exclusively on Teleostei. Dendrobranchiata, Cephalopoda, Anomura and Polychaeta complemented the diets of both species. There were significant differences in diet between the two species, and there was an ontogenetic diet shift in Mustelus lunulatus, with Stomatopoda being the main prey item of juveniles and Brachyura the main prey item of adults. Dietary overlap (by sex and size) was low between species, but it was high for each species, with significant overlap between juveniles and adults of M. lunulatus and M. henlei, and between males and females of M. henlei. There were differences in the trophic levels of the species, sexes and sizes. This study suggests there is food resource partitioning, and differing ecological function of the two Mustelus species in the food web of the study area.  相似文献

Impacts of invasive species may manifest most strongly if these organisms are highly distinct functionally from the native species they often replace. Yet, should we expect functional differences between native and invasive species of generalist organisms like freshwater crayfish? Some existing evidence has pointed to native and invasive crayfish species as ecologically equivalent. We contribute to this literature by comparing the trophic niches of the globally invasive crayfishes Pacifastacus leniusculus and Procambarus clarkii, by applying carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses to replicated allopatric (alone) and sympatric (together) lake populations in western Washington State, USA, where P. clarkii has been recently introduced and P. leniusculus is presumed native. Our study corrected for potential inherent differences in lake food webs as a consequence of lake abiotic or biotic characteristics using random effects in linear mixed effects models. We found that although overall trophic niche size or area of these species was not significantly different, P. leniusculus was significantly higher in trophic position than P. clarkii when also accounting for the effects of body size, sex, and lakes as random effects. This pattern of increased trophic position of P. leniusculus over P. clarkii was conserved over time in one sympatric lake for which we had data over multiple years. Cumulatively, our findings point to trophic differences between the globally cosmopolitan crayfishes P. leniusculus and P. clarkii, particularly when accounting for the ways that ecosystem context can affect food web structure of communities and the trophic resources available to these consumers.  相似文献

We investigated colony foundation behavior of three species of the Lasius claviger group, L. latipes, L. interjectus and L. claviger, using field observations and laboratory experiments. Laboratory studies included observing gyne behavior prior to interaction with host colonies (e.g. grouping, overwintering, feeding) and experiments in which gynes were introduced to putative host colonies. Observations of gyne parasitic behavior immediately after mating flights in the field and the discovery of mixed colonies both confirm the parasitic behavior of these species and point toward a wide host species range including two cases of hyperparasitism. L. interjectus and L. latipes enter the host colony immediately after the nuptial flight, while L. claviger may hibernate and enter in the spring. Laboratory experiments showed that L. interjectus gynes prefer to group and suffer lower mortality when in a group, which is consistent with field observations of L. interjectus gynes entering host colonies in large numbers. Fecundity and feeding of two introduced sibling biological control species, Galerucella calmariensis and G. pusilla (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) on purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria L. (Lythraceae) were compared at constant temperatures of 12.5, 15, 20, 25, and 27.5 °C. Larval feeding was also carried out at 30 °C, but at this temperature, larvae developed only to the L2 stage and none pupated. Thus, data for this temperature were not used in the analysis. There were significant species × temperature interactions in fecundity. Of the two species, Galerucella pusilla laid more eggs. Although egg production of both species was lowest at 12.5 °C and increased to 20 °C, at higher temperatures, the two species reacted differently. From 25 to 27.5 °C, egg production decreased for G. pusilla, but G. calmariensis fecundity peaked at 27.5 °C. Significant temperature × species × life-stage interactions were also observed in feeding. For each species, the amount of feeding varied with temperature and stage of development. Galerucella pusilla adults consumed more foliage at 15, 20, and 27.5 °C. However, at 12.5 °C G. calmariensis adults fed more than G. pusilla. G. pusilla larvae consumed an average of 25% less foliage than G. calmariensis. The lower larval consumption of G. pusilla suggests that when food is limited, G. pusilla larvae may have a higher survival rate because of its ability to complete larval development with less food and produce more progeny due to its greater fecundity. When food is not limited neither species would have a competitive advantage and both species could coexist temporally and spatially. However, since G. calmariensis larvae consumed more leaf material, the larval stage of this species would have a greater impact on purple loosestrife than G. pusilla.  相似文献

Genes involved in the reproductive isolation are particularly useful as molecular markers in speciation studies. Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae), a putative species complex, is a vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Latin America. We isolated from this species a fragment homologous to cacophony, a Drosophila gene that encodes features of the lovesong, an acoustic signal that is important in the sexual isolation of closely related species and known to vary considerably among L. longipalpis putative siblings species. Using an intron of the sandfly cacophony as a marker, we analyzed the molecular variation and sequence divergence among five populations of L. longipalpis from Brazil, three allopatric (Jacobina, Lapinha and Natal) and two putative sympatric sibling species from the locality of Sobral. A high level of polymorphism was found and analysis of the data indicates that very little gene flow is occurring among the populations of Jacobina, Lapinha, and Natal. A high level of differentiation was also observed between the two putative sympatric species of Sobral, one of which seems to be the same sibling species found in Natal, while the other is somewhat more related to Jacobina and Lapinha. However, the amount of estimated gene flow among the Sobral siblings is about seven times higher than the previously estimated for period, another lovesong gene, perhaps indicating that introgression might be affecting cacophony more than period. The results suggest that L. longipalpis is not a single species in Brazil, but it is yet not clear whether the different populations studied deserve species status rather than representing an incipient speciation process.  相似文献

Interspecific differences in diet of the two sympatric fish species of the subfamily Aphyocharacinae were investigated. Both were sampled monthly (March 2000 to February 2001) during the rainy and dry season in North region of the Pantanal. Aphyocharax anisitsi was an invertivorous/insectivorous species, feeding mainly on aquatic insects during the rainy season and terrestrial insects in the dry season. Aphyocharax dentatus remained a piscivorous regardless of the hydrological season. Low feeding-overlap values, 0.079 in the dry season and no overlap in the rainy season were observed. The diet-breadth values for each species were low (less than 0.1) except for A. anisitsi in the lake during the dry season (0.4). A detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) summarized the diet similarity patterns: in DCA 1, it was observed that fish prey grouped A. dentatus in the lower scores, and insect prey grouped A. anisitsi in the higher scores. A two-way ANOVA showed that the diets differed significantly between the species. Our results show a clear trophic segregation between these species, supporting the niche concept that presumes that differences between sympatric species must exist, to allow their coexistence. Besides extreme segregation, it was clear that A. dentatus is a piscivorous fish, despite its low size (until 72 mm). This finding counteracts the current view about food web structure that poses a direct and positive relationship between body size and trophic position.  相似文献

Summary Direct observations have suggested that the closely related wood ants Formica polyctena and F. rufa represent different social organizations, with high queen number in F. polyctena and a high frequency of monogynous nests in F. rufa. We examined social organization and genetic population structure in a setup where populations of the two species are sympatric and gene flow between the species is possible. Our aim was to compare social organization in the species, and study evolutionary relationships between them. The observed relatedness among colony workers suggested that the difference in the level of polygyny is quantitative rather than qualitative, with a higher queen number in F. polyctena. The observed difference in polygyny was not accompanied by a difference in spatial genetic differentiation which was weak in both species. The genetic distance between the species is consistent with limited interspecific gene flow. Identification of a few possible F. rufa migrants in F. polyctena populations suggests potential interspecific gene flow. Thus, reproductive isolation of the species may not be complete when they are sympatric.Received 14 March 2003; revised 10 October 2003; accepted 20 October 2003.  相似文献

In the present study, we analyzed the coexistence pattern of the Lusitanian pine vole (Microtus lusitanicus) and the Mediterranean pine vole (Microtus duodecimcostatus) in a potential area of sympatry in a Mediterranean landscape (Portugal). We also determined the relative contribution of local, landscape, and spatial factors explaining the differences in the distribution patterns of the two species in the region. Using a kriging interpolation method, we obtained a map of sympatric and allopatric areas of species occurrence. The estimated sympatry area corresponded to a northwest–southeast belt representing 11.3% of the study area. Habitat niche differences were assessed with binomial GLMs followed by a variance partitioning. At a local scale, higher altitude, higher cover of shrubs, lower clay content in the soil, and lower cover of tree canopy were the most important factors distinguishing M. lusitanicus presence sites from those with M. duodecimcostatus. At a larger scale, the presence of forest landscape units and the low abundance of “montado” units were the most influencing landscape factors in the identification of M. lusitanicus occurrence sites when compared to M. duodecimcostatus. Our results suggested that local coexistence of M. lusitanicus and M. duodecimcostatus in the field is a rare event. The differences in distribution patterns of the two pine vole species were mostly explained by fine-scale environmental factors and by shared spatial effects.  相似文献

We have compared the species composition and diversity of the diets of black bream, Acanthopagrus butcheri, in three normally closed estuaries on the central south coast of Western Australia, which vary markedly in the extents to which they become hypersaline during dry periods. Although black bream was caught seasonally in Stokes Inlet during this 3-year study, it was obtained from the Hamersley and Culham inlets only during the earlier seasons because salinities in those two estuaries subsequently rose to levels that caused massive mortalities of this sparid. Although a wide range of taxa, including macrophytes, polychaetes, molluscs, crustaceans, insects and teleosts, were ingested by A. butcheri in each estuary, the frequencies of ingestion and volumetric dietary contributions of these taxa varied greatly among the fish in these three estuaries. Thus, for example, in comparison with other estuaries, relatively greater contributions were made to the diet by polychaetes and crustaceans in Stokes Inlet, by macrophytes in Hamersley Inlet, and by insects (mainly chironomid larvae) in Culham Inlet. The relatively greater contribution of teleosts to the diets of black bream in the Hamersley and Culham inlets than in Stokes Inlet, and also differences in the main teleost species ingested in the first two estuaries, are consistent with differences in the densities of fish overall and of the main fish species in those estuaries. The diversity of the diet was far greater in Stokes Inlet than in the other two far more variably saline estuaries, presumably reflecting a greater diversity of food. The dietary compositions of black bream in upstream pools in the tributary of Culham Inlet, which offer refuge when salinities increase markedly in the main body of the estuary, differ from those in those downstream regions, further emphasising the opportunistic nature of the feeding behaviour of black bream. The dietary compositions of black bream underwent size-related changes, but the taxa contributing most to those changes varied greatly among estuaries. Size-related changes would be particularly beneficial in reducing intraspecific competition for food in the two estuaries that vary greatly in salinity and would thus be likely to contain a less diverse range of prey.  相似文献

Nicotiana section Alatae contains eight species with variable flower sizes and morphologies. Section members readily hybridize in the glasshouse, but no hybrids have been observed in natural sympatric and parapatric populations. To investigate interspecific crossing relationships with respect to mechanisms preventing hybridization, all members of section Alatae were intercrossed in a complete diallel. We found positive correlation between the pistil length of the pollen donor and interspecific seed set relative to the conspecific cross. Pollen tube growth rate and pollen donor pistil length were positively correlated as well. Furthermore, pollen from short-pistil members of section Alatae could only grow a maximum distance proportional to, but greater than, their own pistil lengths. Our results show that pollen tube growth capacity (i.e., rate and distance), provides a hybridization barrier in long-pistil species × short-pistil species crosses. We also found another hybridization barrier not specifically related to pollen tube growth capacity in short-pistil species × long-pistil species. Taken together, these barriers can generally be described by a ‘pistil-length mismatch’ rule; in section Alatae, pollen has the most success fertilizing ovules from species with pistil lengths similar to their own. This rule could contribute to hybridization barriers in Section Alatae because the species display dramatically different pistil lengths. The spatial distribution of two marmot species Marmota baibacina and M. sibirica in a zone of coexistence was studied by using their alarm call as a diagnostic trait. It was found that M. baibacina prefers to inhabit bouldery screes, whereas M. sibirica inhabits all suitable biotopes. The difference in biotopic distribution of these species could be explained by M. sibirica forcing M. baibacina out of optimum habitats. Cases of coexistence of both species in one family group sites were registered, which might contribute to the appearance of hybrids.  相似文献
