The objective and subjective indexes of sound stimulus discrimination have been studied in order to get insight into individual stages of signal processing in the human brain. The experiment employed two methods: electrophysiological (mismatch negativity or MMN recording) and psychophysical (two-alternative forced choice). Two types of spatial sound stimuli simulated gradual and abrupt sound motion from the head midline. The subjective discrimination between the gradual and abrupt motions was estimated as a function of the stimulus trajectory length. MMN as an objective index of spatial discrimination has been obtained in response to the subthreshold and the suprathreshold levels of psychophysical discrimination. An increase in the angular displacement of the moving stimuli resulted in an increase in both the MMN amplitude and the subjective discrimination, although their correlation remained below the significance level. The results obtained are discussed from the point of view of preconscious perception of auditory spatial information.  相似文献

We consider the problem of identifying differentially expressed genes in microarray data in a Bayesian framework with a noninformative prior distribution on the parameter quantifying differential expression. We introduce a new rule, tail posterior probability, based on the posterior distribution of the standardized difference, to identify genes differentially expressed between two conditions, and we derive a frequentist estimator of the false discovery rate associated with this rule. We compare it to other Bayesian rules in the considered settings. We show how the tail posterior probability can be extended to testing a compound null hypothesis against a class of specific alternatives in multiclass data.  相似文献

Smoking behavior is a complex, which includes multiple stages in the progression from experimentation to continued use and dependence. The experience of subjective effects, such as dizziness, euphoria, heart pounding, nausea and high, have been associated with varying degrees of persistence and subsequent abuse/dependence of marijuana, cocaine, tobacco and alcohol ( Grant et al. 2005 , Wagner & Anthony 2002 ). Previous studies have reported associations between neuronal nicotinic receptor (CHRN) genes and subjective effects to nicotine. We sought to replicate and expand this work by examining eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in a sample of adult smokers (n = 316) who reported subjective effects following cigarette smoking in a controlled laboratory environment. Two SNPs each in the CHRNB2, CHRNB3, CHRNA6 and CHRNA4 genes were examined. A significant association was found between two SNPs and physical effects reported after smoking the first experimental cigarette. SNP rs2072658 is upstream of CHRNB2 (P‐value = 0.0046) and rs2229959 is a synonymous change in exon 5 of CHRNA4 (P value = 0.0051). We also examined possible functional relevance of SNP rs2072658 using an in vitro gene expression assay. These studies provided evidence that the minor allele of rs2072658 may lead to decreased gene expression, using two separate cell lines, P19 and SH‐SY5Y (18% P < 0.001 and 26% P < 0.001 respectively). The human genetic study and functional assays suggest that variation in the promoter region of CHRNB2 gene may be important in mediating levels of expression of the β2 nicotinic receptor subunit, which may be associated with variation in subjective response to nicotine.  相似文献

The authors used testimonies of students on the dominant motives of joining a higher education institution as the behavioral model that prefers a high probability of the attainment of a goal or its subjective value. They compared the features of the motivation sphere related to the choice of profession with the psychophysiological data of 38 students of a sports higher education institution. The motivation of this choice was determined using a test questionnaire that permitted the authors to measure the subjective value (importance) and accessibility (probability of attainment) of the selected profession. The psychophysiological features were evaluated on two levels, i.e., formal dynamic (temperamental characteristics) and physiological (frequency and amplitude characteristics of EEG). The athlete students’ motivating factor of the choice of profession was shown to form under the influence of individual and typological features, which manifest themselves in psychomotor activity and total ergicity (working capacity), while accessibility experiences a negative influence of the temperamental characteristics in the intellectual sphere, as well as the total ergicity level. The background EEG was more activated in those who chose sports as their profession because of deeming it more valuable. In students who were attracted by the accessibility of this field, a lower cerebral activation level was observed, especially in the frontal zones of the left hemisphere.  相似文献

It has often been argued that gene-duplication events are most commonly followed by a mutational event that silences one member of the pair, while on rare occasions both members of the pair are preserved as one acquires a mutation with a beneficial function and the other retains the original function. However, empirical evidence from genome duplication events suggests that gene duplicates are preserved in genomes far more commonly and for periods far in excess of the expectations under this model, and whereas some gene duplicates clearly evolve new functions, there is little evidence that this is the most common mechanism of duplicate-gene preservation. An alternative hypothesis is that gene duplicates are frequently preserved by subfunctionalization, whereby both members of a pair experience degenerative mutations that reduce their joint levels and patterns of activity to that of the single ancestral gene. We consider the ways in which the probability of duplicate-gene preservation by such complementary mutations is modified by aspects of gene structure, degree of linkage, mutation rates and effects, and population size. Even if most mutations cause complete loss-of-subfunction, the probability of duplicate-gene preservation can be appreciable if the long-term effective population size is on the order of 10(5) or smaller, especially if there are more than two independently mutable subfunctions per locus. Even a moderate incidence of partial loss-of-function mutations greatly elevates the probability of preservation. The model proposed herein leads to quantitative predictions that are consistent with observations on the frequency of long-term duplicate gene preservation and with observations that indicate that a common fate of the members of duplicate-gene pairs is the partitioning of tissue-specific patterns of expression of the ancestral gene.  相似文献

Gene expression profiles of 14 common tumors and their counterpart normal tissues were analyzed with machine learning methods to address the problem of selection of tumor-specific genes and analysis of their differential expressions in tumor tissues. First, a variation of the Relief algorithm, “RFE_Relief algorithm” was proposed to learn the relations between genes and tissue types. Then, a support vector machine was employed to find the gene subset with the best classification performance for distinguishing cancerous tissues and their counterparts. After tissue-specific genes were removed, cross validation experiments were employed to demonstrate the common deregulated expressions of the selected gene in tumor tissues. The results indicate the existence of a specific expression fingerprint of these genes that is shared in different tumor tissues, and the hallmarks of the expression patterns of these genes in cancerous tissues are summarized at the end of this paper.  相似文献

Summary The influence of a variety of parameters was investigated on polyethylene glycol (PEG)-mediated transient nptII and gus gene expression in mesophyll protoplasts of Arabidopsis thaliana ecotype, Estland, in order to develop a suitable transient gene expression system. The investigation revealed that a combination of 20% PEG, incubation time of 15 min, 20–30 μg plasmid concentration per ml along with 50 μg carrier DNA m/l, and inclusion of calcium and magnesium ions during transfection followed by a culture period of 24 h registered maximum NPTII activity. Of the various promoters used for driving expression of the gus gene, the ubiquitin promoter from A. thaliana was the most efficient followed by 35S promoter of the CaMV and the actin promoter of rice. For comparison, similar studies in protoplasts of rice, wheat, and Brassica also revealed the differences in strength of these promoters. Arabidopsis ubiquitin promoter was the most effective in Brassica, and the rice actin1 promoter was the most effective in rice and wheat.  相似文献
