In this study, we measured, under laboratory conditions, the direct and indirect effects of insecticides on mealybug destroyer, Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), and parasitoid Leptomastix dactylopii Howard (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), natural enemies of citrus mealybug, Planococcus citri (Risso) (Homoptera: Pseudococcidae). The adult stages of both natural enemies were exposed to sprays of the insecticides buprofezin, pyriproxyfen, flonicamid, acetamiprid, dinotefuran, and clothianidin at label-recommended rates to assess direct mortality after 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. The effects of the insecticides on L. dactylopii parasitization rate and percentage of parasitoid emergence also were monitored using the label and 4x the recommended label rate. Dinotefuran was extremely detrimental to the adult parasitoid at the label rate with 100% mortality after 24 h. Buprofezin, pyriproxyfen, and flonicamid were not harmful to L. dactylopii when applied at the label rate. At 4x the recommended label rate, dinotefuran, acetamiprid, and clothianidin were all harmful to the parasitoid with 100% mortality 72 h after application. Both buprofezin and flonicamid were not toxic to L. dactylopii with 100% adult survival after 72 h. Pyriproxyfen and flonicamid, at both the label and 4x the recommended label rate, did not negatively affect L. dactylopii parasitization rate or percentage of parasitoid emergence. Acetamiprid, dinotefuran, and clothianidin were toxic to C. montrouzieri adults with 100% mortality after 48 h, whereas buprofezin, pyriproxyfen, and flonicamid demonstrated minimal (10-20% mortality after 48 h) harmful effects to the predator. Based on the results from our study, the indirect effects of the insect growth regulator (IGR) buprofezin were not decisive; however, the IGR pyriproxyfen and the insecticide flonicamid were not directly or indirectly harmful to the predator C. montrouzieri and parastioid L. dactylopii, indicating that these insecticides are compatible with both natural enemies when used together for control of citrus mealybug in greenhouses and conservatories.  相似文献

The citrus mealybug Planococcus citri was found in large numbers on lemon and acid lime in 1991 around Bangalore. It was attacked by two encyrtid parasitoids, the exotic Leptomastix dactylopii and the indigenous Coccidoxenoides peregrinus. L. dactylopii was recovered 7 years after a release in 1984 around Bangalore. However C. peregrinus was more abundant, and was responsible for the decline of P. citri both on lemon and acid lime. No other primary or hyper‐parasitoid or predator of P. citri was recorded in these citrus orchards during the study.  相似文献

Leptomastidea abnormis (Girault) and Leptomastix dactylopii (Howard) [Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae] are the two parasitoid species frequently used for biological control of the citrus mealybug Planococcus citri (Risso) [Homoptera: Pseudococcidae]. As part of a programme to determine the best control practice, host size selection and sex allocation were studied in L. abnormis, and compared with those of L. dactylopii. L. abnormis showed a preference for the second size class, but also attacked third and fourth size class and adult mealybugs, while in previous studies L. dactylopii was found to prefer the third and fourth size class and adults, and never attacked second size class mealybugs. Female L. abnormis reared from parasitized mealybugs had a higher mean body mass than males, as is predicted by Charnov's theory on sex allocation. However, sex ratios of emerging L. abnormis did not differ between mealybug size classes. These results imply possibile coexistence of the two parasitoids. As field evidence suggests a more complex interaction between the two species, studying direct competition would be a useful next step.  相似文献

Anagyrus pseudococci (Girault) , a koinobiont endoparasitoid , is a potential biological control agent of the citrus mealybug Planococcus citri (Risso) . This paper examines the effect of host stage of the mealybugs on the parasitoid preference , development , survival and sex ratio of the offspring . Host susceptibility and preference tests showed that the parasitoid had a significant preference for the older host instars . Percentage parasitization increased 4.8 - fold in the adult stage , compared with the second - instar host , although the parasitoid developed and emerged successfully from all stages . Mean developmental time for male parasitoids was faster than for the females . There was some evidence of delayed development of males in young hosts . Higher percentage emergence of parasitoid was observed from older mealybugs . A. pseudococci exhibited maternal adjustment of sex ratio as a function of host size with an increased proportion of females with the increasing host size . Females maximized their fitness by adjusting offspring sex ratio in response to host size without evaluating the future host quality . This information is important for mass rearing of A. pseudococci and for evaluating it in a biological control programme for P. citri.  相似文献

Susceptibility of the lepidopteran parasitoid Hyposoter didymator (Thunberg) to seven modern insecticides, azadirachtin, diflubenzuron, halofenozide, methoxyfenozide, pyriproxyfen, tebufenozide, and spinosad, was tested in the laboratory. Pupae were exposed to different doses of each compound by direct topical application. At the field recommended doses, methoxyfenozide and tebufenozide had no effect on H. didymator. Halofenozide had a low effect on both adult emergence and adult survival but the progeny size and parasitism capacity were not affected. Diflubenzuron was moderately toxic to the parasitoid, while azadirachtin, pyriproxyfen and spinosad were very toxic, affecting all its life parameters. In the pyriproxyfen and spinosad treatments, no progeny was obtained. As a second approach of this study, we determined the rate of penetration through the pupal cocoon and absorption in the parasitoid body as pharmacokinetic parameters important for toxicity. Most of the radioactivity was retained in the silken cocoon, indicating a low accumulation in the parasitoid body. Among all compounds tested, diflubenzuron exhibited the highest absorption in the parasitoid body, followed by pyriproxyfen. For halofenozide, methoxyfenozide and tebufenozide, low absorption (<2%) was found. In addition, we tested for the presence of molting hormone receptors in Hyposoter tissues using a monoclonal antibody 9B9. Our data suggest that the use of diflubenzuron azadirachtin, pyriproxyfen, halofenozide, and spinosad in combination with H. didymator in integrated pest management (IPM) programs should be carefully evaluated. Methoxyfenozide and tebufenozide could be considered safe for this parasitoid.  相似文献

The repellent and acaricidal effects of some essential oils from the most typical wild plant species of northern Patagonia, Argentina, on Varroa destructor Anderson & Trueman were evaluated using a complete exposure test. Honey bees, Apis mellifera L., and mites (five specimens of each per dish) were introduced in petri dishes having different oil concentrations (from 0.1 to 25 micro per cage). Survival of bees and mites was registered after 24, 48, and 72 h. An attraction/repellence test was performed using a wax tube impregnated with essential oil and another tube containing wax only. The lowest LD50 values for mites were registered for Acantholippia seriphioides (A. Gray) Mold. (1.27 microl per cage) and Schinus molle L. (2.65 microl per cage) after 24 h, and for Wedelia glauca (Ortega) O. Hoffm. ex Hicken (0.59 microl per cage) and A. seriphioides (1.09 microl per cage) after 72 h of treatment. The oil with the highest selectivity ratio (A. mellifera LD50/V. destructor LD50) was the one extracted from S. molle (>16). Oils of Lippia junelliana (Mold.) Troncoso, Minthostachys mollis (HBK) Grieseb., and Lippia turbinata Grieseb. mixed with wax had repellent properties. None of the oils tested had attractive effects on Varroa mites.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were carried out to compare the toxicity of seven foliar insecticides to four species of adult beneficial insects representing two families of Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae (Aphytis melinus Debach, Eretmocerus eremicus Rose & Zolnerowich, and Encarsiaformosa Gahan) and Mymaridae (Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault) that attack California red scale, Aonidiella aurantii (Maskell); sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (both E. eremicus and E. formosa); and glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar), respectively. Insecticides from four pesticide classes were evaluated using a petri dish bioassay technique across a range of concentrations to develop dosage-mortality regressions. Insecticides tested included acetamiprid (neonicotinoid); chlorpyrifos (organophosphate); bifenthrin, cyfluthrin, and fenpropathrin (pyrethroids); and buprofezin and pyriproxyfen (insect growth regulators [IGRs]). Chlorpyrifos was consistently the most toxic pesticide to all four species of beneficial insects tested based on LC50 values recorded 24 h posttreatment compared with 48-h LC50 values with the neonicotinoid and pyrethroids or 96 h with the IGRs. Among the three pyrethroids, fenpropathrin was usually less toxic (except similar toxicity to A. melinus) than was cyfluthrin, and it was normally less toxic (except similar toxicity with E. formosa) than was bifenthrin. Acetamiprid was generally less toxic than bifenthrin (except similar toxicity with G. ashmeadi). The IGRs buprofezin and pyriproxyfen were usually less toxic than the contact pesticides, but we did not test for possible impacts on female fecundity. For all seven pesticides tested, A. melinus was the most susceptible parasitoid of the four test species. The data presented here will provide pest managers with specific information on the compatibility of select insecticides with natural enemies attacking citrus and cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., pests.  相似文献

Development time, mummification, pupal mortality, host feeding and sex ratio of a Norwegian strain of Aphelinus varipes Förster parasitizing the cotton aphid, Aphis gossypii Glover were studied at 20, 25 and 30°C in controlled climate cabinets. Petri dishes with cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L) leaves on agar were used as experimental units. Cotton aphids in different larval instars and as adults, reared at the three different temperatures, were presented to A. varipes in a `no-choice' situation for 6 h. These presentations were done at 25°C in each experiment to avoid an influence of temperature on parasitization rate. More first instar aphids were parasitized than third and fourth instars among the aphids reared at 20°C. Pupal mortality of the parasitoid was not influenced by temperature. It was lower in aphids parasitized as adults than in aphids parasitized in second instar. The sex ratio of A. varipes was female-biased, and varied between 92% females developed from aphids reared at 25°C and 70% from aphids reared at 20°C. The sex ratio was not significantly influenced by host stage. The development time of A. varipes ranged from 17.5 days at 20°C to 9.8 days at 30°C.  相似文献

We report and discuss effects of four insect growth regulators: buprofezin, fenoxycarb pyriproxyfen and chlorfluazuron, at concentrations recommended for agricultural use on six species of natural enemies of homopteran pests. Dipping in buprofezin had no appreciable effect on adult mortality, oviposition and development ofComperiella bifasciata (Howard), (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae). When exposed to hosts treated with buprofezin, percentage mortality of adultEncyrtus infelix Embleton (Encyrtidae) was low; buprofezin had some detrimental effect on immature stages ofE. infelix when applied prior to parasitization, but not when introduced after parasitization. Buprofezin had a slight effect on the immature stages ofCryptochaetum iceryae Williston (Diptera: Cryptochaetidae), while fenoxycarb and pyriproxyfen had marked detrimental effects on parasitization and/or development of the parasitoid fly. None of the larvae ofRodolia cardinalis Mulsant (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) developed into adults after application of buprofezin, fenoxycarb or pyriproxyfen. Buprofezin and chlorfluazuron completely prevented egg hatch ofChilocorus bipustulatus L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Buprofezin did not adversely affect egg hatch and larval development ofElatophilus hebraicus Pericart (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae); fenoxycarb or pyriproxyfen applied either before or after oviposition on pine needles caused total suppression of egg hatch.  相似文献

Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) transmits the causal agent of Huanglongbing, a devastating disease of citrus trees. In this study we measured behavioral responses of D. citri to combinations of visual, olfactory, and gustatory stimuli in test arenas. Stimuli were presented to the psyllids in droplets or lines of an emulsified wax formulation in two different arena types in no-choice tests. First, when placed on a colored ring situated halfway between the center and perimeter of a petri dish, D. citri spent more time on yellow versus gray rings; however, this response disappeared when either gray or yellow wax droplets were applied. When the psyllids were presented with droplets scented with terpenes, the response to both scent and color was increased. The addition of a dilute (?0.1 M) sucrose solution to the wax droplets increased the magnitude of D. citri responses. Next, groups of D. citri were placed on plastic laboratory film covering a sucrose solution, to mimic a leaf surface. Test stimuli were presented via two 'midribs' made from lines of emulsified wax formulation. Probing levels were measured as a function of color saturation and scent composition, and concentration. The test scents were based on qualitatively major volatiles emitted by Murraya paniculata (L.) Jack, Citrus aurantifolia (Christm.) Swingle, and C. sinensis (L.) Osbeck. The highest probing response was observed on the middle concentration (20-μl scent/10 ml wax formulation) of the C. aurantifolia-scented wax lines. Results indicate that there are interactive effects between the different sensory modalities in directing host-plant assessment behavior.  相似文献

The compatibility of five insect growth regulators (IGRs), buprofezin, pyriproxyfen, fenoxycarb, pymetrozine, and kinoprene, were tested in the laboratory for compatibility with the whitefly parasitoid Eretmocerus eremicus Rose and Zolnerowich (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae). The survivorship of adult parasitoids foraging on poinsettia leaves with residues 6, 24, and 96 h of age was determined. The toxicity of Bemisia argentifolii Bellows and Perring (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) patches treated with IGRs presented to female parasitoids 24 and 96 h posttreatment was quantified. Survivorship of immature E. eremicus developing within B. argentifolii nymphs was determined by treating whitefly nymphs with IGRs 5 and 13 days postoviposition by female parasitoids. Finally, behavioral observations of female parasitoids foraging on IGR-treated and untreated B. argentifolii patches presented simultaneously were quantified to determine whether IGR residues had a repellant effect toward E. eremicus. Averaging ranks for IGRs based on their compatibility with E. eremicus and their ability to kill B. argentifolii nymphs produced the following parasitoid compatibility order: buprofezin > fenoxycarb > pymetrozine = pyriproxyfen > kinoprene. Further work in greenhouses assessing the efficacy of buprofezin with E. eremicus for B. argentifolii control on poinsettias is recommended.  相似文献

In this research, for the first time, compatibility of imidacloprid and pyriproxyfen was assayed with both pupa and adult stages of Encarsia inaron Walker parasitizing Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood. First, the insecticides were sprayed on bean plants containing the parasitoid pupae, thenceforth, survival of the adult parasitoid was evaluated 24 h post-exposure to fresh, 1-, 4-, 7-, 14-, and 21-day-old residues of them on bean leaflets in Petri dishes. Both insecticides significantly reduce E. inaron adult emergence. Mortality of the parasitoid pupa in treatment with imidacloprid (69.7%) was significantly higher than mortality with pyriproxyfen (28.6%). Pyriproxyfen was non-toxic to the adult parasitoid when residues were dried in fresh and aged through the experiment, while in the same condition, imidacloprid significantly killed the adult parasitoids up to 7 days after application. Results have been discussed on the potential compatibility of the insecticides with E. inaron in an integrated pest management (IPM) approach.  相似文献

To minimize the risk that introduced entomophagous biological control agents may pose to native and beneficial insect species, identification of likely nontarget hosts is required before release is considered. A novel technique, in which the parasitoid acts as a vector of a bacterium pathogenic to potential hosts, has been used as an indicator of parasitoid ovipositional activity even when subsequent development of the parasitoid egg within the 'host' does not occur. In this study the application of this technique was examined in relation to container type using the facultative bacterium Serratia marcescens in association with the parasitoid Microctonus hyperodae. Two permissive host weevil species, Listronotus bonariensis and Irenimus aequalis , were exposed for 72 h to M. hyperodae treated with either distilled water or S. marcescens suspension in either Petri dishes or cages. Weevil septicaemia was significantly higher when exposed to S. marcescens -treated parasitoids than water-treated parasitoids (P < 0.001), with no difference in mortality between weevil species. Septicaemia was significantly higher in the Petri dishes than in cages (P < 0.001). This was attributed to improved survival of S. marcescens in the Petri dishes compared with cages. Total parasitoid activity (combined septicaemia and parasitism) for I. aequalis was higher in Petri dishes than in cages and far exceeded field parasitism. Petri dishes provide an environment for constant interaction between parasitoid and target host and thereby provide a conservative indication of parasitoid host range. However, cages may be more suitable to conduct host range studies because the ability to manipulate the environment. Potential refinements to the parasitoid-bacteria technique include methodology that enhances viability of the bacterium under cage conditions.  相似文献

In the aphid parasitoid Aphidius ervi Haliday, the incidence of diapause around the critical photoperiod was dependent on temperature. At a photoperiod of 12 h light:12 h dark, a significantly higher proportion of diapausing individuals was found at 12 degrees C than at 15 degrees C. The second larval stage of the parasitoid was most sensitive to photoperiod and localised-illumination experiments showed that the parasitoid responded independently of the aphid host. The sex ratio of the population which emerged after rearing in short-days and/or after diapause was male biased. Topical application of the juvenile hormone-mimic, pyriproxyfen, before or during diapause delayed emergence of Aphidius ervi but did not induce diapause or influence its termination. The ecdysteroid mimic RH 5849 induced diapause in a few treated individuals but did not affect diapause termination.  相似文献

A bubble contact angle method was used to determine interfacial free-energy characteristics of polystyrene substrata in the presence and absence of potential surface-conditioning proteins (bovine glycoprotein, bovine serum albumin, fatty acid-free bovine serum albumin), a bacterial culture supernatant, and a bacterial exopolymer. Clean petri dish substrata gave a contact angle of 90°, but tissue culture dish substrata were more hydrophilic, giving an angle of 29° or less. Bubble contact angles at the surfaces exposed to the macromolecular solutions varied with the composition and concentration of the solution. Modification by pronase enzymes of the conditioning effect of proteins depended on the nature of both the substratum and the protein, as well as the time of addition of the enzyme relative to the conditioning of the substratum. The effects of dissolved and substratum-adsorbed proteins on the attachment of Pseudomonas sp. strain NCMB 2021 to petri dishes and tissue culture dishes were consistent with changes in bubble contact angles (except when proteins were adsorbed to tissue culture dishes before attachment) as were alterations in protein-induced inhibition of bacterial attachment to petri dishes by treatment with pronase. Differences between the attachment of pseudomonads to petri dishes and tissue culture dishes suggested that different mechanisms of adhesion are involved at the surfaces of these two substrata.  相似文献

Aphid-infested cereal trap plants were used to detect the effects of aphid sex pheromone components on aphid parasitoid activity in arable field margins. The presence of aphid sex pheromones significantly increased parasitization levels by aphid parasitoids on the plants. By placing plants alongside and at varying distances away from a pheromone-releasing vial, the technique was used to measure the distance over which a point source of aphid sex pheromone could increase parasitization levels. Pheromone-releasing vials significantly increased parasitization by the generalist parasitoid Praon volucre on plants adjacent to vials and on plants placed 20 cm away. When the distance between pheromone-releasing vials and aphid-infested plants was increased to 1 m, parasitization by P. volucre was increased only on the plant adjacent to the vial, whereas parasitization by the specialist parasitoid Aphidius rhopalosiphi was also increased on plants placed 1 m away. This indicates a possible difference between the parasitoids in their foraging behaviour in response to semiochemical cues during host selection. When the experiment was repeated with some trap plants placed 3 m away from the pheromone-releasing vial, parasitization was again concentrated on plants directly alongside the vial, but only P. volucre appeared to be active in the field at the time of this experiment, so the effect on A. rhopalosiphi could not be assessed. The results are encouraging for the prospects of using aphid sex pheromones to manipulate parasitoids in order to improve aphid population control.  相似文献

Abstract:  We investigated, by means of topical, residual and field assays, the toxicity of four insecticides ( Bacillus thuringiensis , azadirachtin, flufenoxuron and ethofenprox) to adult, larvae and eggs of the Eucalyptus snout-beetle Gonipterus scutellatus and their side-effects on the adults of the solitary egg parasitoid Anaphes nitens , its natural enemy. In the topical toxicity experiment, both flufenoxuron and ethofenprox severely affected G. scutellatus , causing 100% adult mortality after 7 days, and 75 and 100% larval mortality, respectively. Ethofenprox also caused 93% larval pre-eclosion mortality and 100% parasitoid mortality. In the residual experiment, azadirachtin acted as an effective larvicide when ingested (73% mortality after 7 days). Ethofenprox showed the highest toxicity, with 100% mortality of adults and larvae of G. scutellatus after 24 h. On the day 7 of observation, flufenoxuron resulted in 93% adult mortality and 100% larval mortality. After contact with residuals, only ethofenprox and flufenoxuron had adversely affected A. nitens (98% mortality after 48 h). Bacillus thuringiensis exhibited only a slight activity against the pest or the parasitoid. The field experiment was carried out on three localities, with a preliminary sampling, and three samplings after the applications of the products, on days 7, 14 and 30. We evaluated the parasitism rate, parasitoid sex ratio, parasitoid pre-eclosion mortality, the abundance of G. scutellatus adults, larvae and egg capsules, the pre-eclosion mortality rate of weevil eggs and larvae and the foliar damage. Only fluenoxuron and ethofenprox reduced the pest population and the foliar damages, but ethofenprox also significantly decreased the rate of parasitism (17%) after 7 days. Given our experimental results, we suggest that flufenoxuron and azadirachtin could be used in association with the natural enemy.  相似文献

The population density of mealybug species in some South African citrus orchards has increased to pest status in recent years. The characterization of the natural enemy complex and quantification of their contribution to the control of Planococcus citri (Risso), Pseudococcus longispinus (Targioni-Tozzetti) and Pseudococcus calceolariae (Maskell) on Citrus limon (L.) and Citrus reticulata (Blanco) was investigated through intensive sampling. Eight primary and four secondary parasitoids, and two predator species were identified from P. citri and P. calceolariae. Anagyrus pseudococci (Girault) and Coccidoxenoides peregrinus (Timberlake) were the most common species, accounting for 44% and 21% of the total. Of the five primary parasitoids reared from P. longispinus, A. pseudococci and Anagyrus sp. were predominant, comprising 41% and 30%. Nymphal and adult parasitism (range = 0-26% vs. 0-66%) and predation (range = 0-5.6% vs. 0-4.1%) varied significantly between host trees and mealybug species (P < 0.001). The numbers of nymphal instars and adult stages of P. calceolariae and P. longispinus and the nymphal stage of P. citri that were parasitized and killed by predators correlated significantly with the total number of hosts on which they acted (P < 0.01), suggesting a density-dependent association. Laboratory bioassay of nine contact insecticides (methidathion, methomyl, methyl-parathion, parathion, profenofos and prothiofos) against C. peregrinus indicated that all were highly toxic, causing 98-100% mortality in < 6 h of treatment. The IGRs fenoxycarb and triflumuron did not cause significant parasitoid mortality (P > 0.05). However, a mixture of pyriproxyfen and mineral oil caused a marginally significant mortality (P < 0.05).  相似文献

The effects of azadirachtin/Neemazal on adults, emergence, and life table parameters of Trichogramma cacoeciae Marchal were studied. The adults were exposed to fresh residues of the insecticide applied on glass plates. Based on the dose-response study, the LC50 value was 1330 ppm or 13.3 microg (AI)/ml. The effect of Neemazal on three developmental stages of the parasitoid was tested by dipping parasitized Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) and Cydia pomonella (L.) eggs at the field-recommended concentration 3, 6, and 9 d after parasitization corresponding to larval, prepupal, and pupal stages. The emergence of adult parasitoids was adversely affected in both hosts, but the adverse effect was more in S. cerealella eggs compared with C. pomonella. The adult emergence was reduced by 73.3 and 33.76% in Sitotroga and Cydia eggs compared with controls, respectively. Longevity and progeny production of the emergent adults did not differ significantly from control. Neemazal affected stable population parameters (r(m), T, and DT) significantly. The intrinsic rate of increase for the control and Neemazal-exposed populations was 0.340 and 0.335 female offspring per female per day, respectively. Because some of postemergence life table parameters of adults were significantly reduced by the insecticide treatment, emergence rate of the parasitoid from treated eggs is not an adequate measure of ecological selectivity, and field studies are needed to determine the actual impact of neem on T. cacoeciae.  相似文献

Older instars of the leafminer hostChromatomyia syngenesiae Hardy (Diptera: Agromyzidae) at parasitization resulted in larger female adults of the larval-pupal endoparasitoidDacnusa sibirica Telenga (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). The sex ratio in the parasitoid offspring became increasingly female biased and development period decreased with increasing age of the host at parasitization. Older host instars were therefore considered to produce a fitter parasitoid.  相似文献
