Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces carlsbergensis were grown in batch culture with and without oxygen control. The concentrations of A-, B- and C-type cytochromes of both yeasts were dependent on the oxygen concentration during growth as well as on the initial glucose concentration of the growth medium. S. cerevisiae cytochromes were maximal after growth in low glucose and low oxygen; S. carlsbergensis cytochromes were maximal after growth in low glucose and high oxygen. Except when glucose was in very low concentration, its catabolism by S. carlsbergensis was directed predominantly towards ethanolic fermentation regardless of the oxygen concentration. Growth rate, total cell mass and yield were maximal, and anabolism was closely balanced with catabolism, when glucose and oxygen of S. carlsbergensis cultures were both high. Under these conditions neither catabolism, respiratory or ethanolic, nor glucose uptake were maximal.  相似文献

Summary The genetic diversity of two wild diploid wheat species, Triticum monococcum var. boeoticum and T. urartu, was assessed using starch gel electrophoresis. Genetic diversity is uniformly low in both species. Number of alleles per locus was very low with a mean of 1.22 for T. monococcum var. boeoticum and 1.19 in T. urartu. Percentage of polymorphic loci was also low, with a mean of 19.71 for T. monococcum var. boeoticum and a mean of 18.35 for T. urartu. Mean gene diversity was low with a mean of 0.052 in populations of T. monococcum var. boeoticum and a mean of 0.040 in populations of T. urartu. Genetic affinities of the species and of populations were computed using Nei's identity index (NI). Overall genetic affinities of the two species are NI=0.697. The genetic affinities of different populations of a species are uniformly high with NIs ranging from 0.894 to 1.000 in T. monococcum var. boeoticum and from 0.898 to 1.000 in T. urartu.Research supported by the California Agricultural Experiment Station and the International Board of Plant Genetic Resources  相似文献

采用土培的方法,研究了磷(P)胁迫对雷公藤(Tripterygium wilfordii Hook.f.)1年生和3年生幼苗在一个生长季内形态指标及生物量的影响。结果表明:低P处理显著抑制了雷公藤幼苗地上部分的增长,而对地下部分的影响较小,导致根冠比的增加,在相同P水平处理下,3年生雷公藤的根冠比高于1年生的;低P胁迫显著影响了雷公藤的生物量积累及分配,雷公藤幼苗总生物量及1年生雷公藤细根生物量占根系生物量的比例下降,根系生物量在总生物量中的比例及3年生雷公藤细根生物量在根系生物量中的比例上升。这表明3年生雷公藤对P逆境有更好的适应机制,对低P林地套种雷公藤的苗龄选择有参考价值;雷公藤幼苗的株高、最长枝均与生物量呈显著的正相关,可作为耐低P雷公藤良种选育中优良性状的指标。中轻度的P胁迫不显著影响根系生物量的积累,维持较大比例的根系是雷公藤适应低P胁迫的主要策略。  相似文献

Self-incompatibility in Brassica campestris c.v. Arlo is controlled by a single locus sporophytic system. The identity and expression of the S alleles were determined in eight inbred and two hybrid families. It was found that co-dominance of alleles is more frequent in the stigma, whereas dominance relations between pairs of alleles predominate in the pollen. A linear order of dominance was established between six S alleles and alleles high, intermediate and low in the dominance series were recognized.In considering the variation in the expression of compatibility and the segregation ratios in inbred, F1, F2 and backcross progenies, the presence of a specific S allele conditioning self-fertility, or a single dominant self-compatibility factor independent of the S locus could not be established. Instead, self-compatibility in this cultivar was ascribed to the segregation of a polygenic complex which is capable of modifying the incompatibility reaction to the point of self-fertility, or to a reduction in the strength of the reaction due to the presence of S alleles low in the dominance series.  相似文献

Summary The investigation was carried out in order to ascertain whyAtriplex hastata, previously recorded as a nitrophilous plant, can colonise fly ash which has a low nitrogen content.Sinapis arvensis, a weed which does not grow on fly ash, was selected as a control plant. Solution-culture experiments showed that the two species differed in their responses to high and low levels of nitrogen, the growth rate ofS. arvensis being much more severely affected by low levels of 0 to 50 ppm.A. hastata was found to make very efficient use of its nitrogen supply. Both species grew better with nitrate than with ammonium nitrogen. InA. hastata, uptake of nitrogen was not influenced by pH when only nitrate was present. Where both nitrate and ammonium were available, nitrate was absorbed preferentially at low pH and ammonium at high pH. Some properties of fly ash which render it a suitable medium for growth ofA. hastata are discussed.  相似文献

The relationships of diatom species to dissolved heavy metals in the streams of the Uintah Basin of Utah were studied through four seasons of 1977–1978. Niche center gradient analysis, cluster analysis and correlation analysis were performed.Achnanthes minutissima, Cyclotella meneghiniana, Cymbella minuta, Gomphonema parvulum, Navicula secreta var.apiculata, Nitzschia frustulum, Nitzschia frustulum var.perminuta, Nitzschia frustulum var.perpusilla, Nitzschia palea, andSynedra ulna appear to be indicator species of high or low heavy metal concentrations. Utricularia reniformis is an endemic Brazilian carnivorous plant, most common in high‐altitude grasslands. Knowledge of the reproductive biology of U. reniformis is essential for planning conservation strategies, but it is currently poorly understood. Thus, we studied the floral morphology, floral biology, breeding system and pollination of this species. U. reniformis produces and stores nectar in the flower spur, a classic feature of bee‐pollinated flowers, and we recorded Xylocopa sp. and Bombus sp. as pollinators. Moreover, although it is self‐compatible it is an obligate animal‐pollinated species, as the sensitive stigma avoids self‐pollination. However, in natural conditions reproductive success is low due to the rarity of visits from pollinators. We suggest that the low reproductive success caused by a deficit of pollinators may affect gene flow, causing loss of genetic diversity in U. reniformis.  相似文献

Background: Prescribed burning in peatlands is controversial due to concerns over damage to their ecological functioning, particularly regarding their key genus Sphagnum. However, empirical evidence is scarce.

Aims: The aim of the article is to quantify Sphagnum recovery following prescribed burns.

Methods: We completed nine fires at a raised bog in Scotland, achieving a range of fire severities by simulating drought in some plots. We measured Sphagnum cover and chlorophyll fluorescence Fv/Fm ratio (an estimate of photosynthetic capacity) up to 36 months post-fire.

Results: Cover of dominant Sphagnum capillifolium was similar in unburnt and burnt plots, likely due to its high moisture content which prevented combustion. Burning decreased S. capillifolium Fv/Fm 5 months after fire from 0.67 in unburnt plots to 0.44 in low fire severity plots and 0.24 in higher fire severity (drought) plots. After 22 months, Fv/Fm in burnt plots showed a healthy photosynthetic capacity of 0.76 and no differences between severity treatments. Other Sphagnum species showed similar post-fire recovery though their low overall abundance precluded formal statistical analysis.

Conclusions: S. capillifolium is resilient to low–moderate fire severities and the same may be true for a number of other species. This suggests that carefully applied managed burning can be compatible with the conservation of peatland ecosystem function.  相似文献

In the order C. microphylla — C. intermedia — C. korshinskii, compensation irradiance, saturation irradiance, and optimum temperature for photosynthesis increased, net photosynthetic rate (P N) at low irradiance and low temperature decreased, optimum air humidity decreased, and P N at low air humidity increased. Daily cumulative value of P N increased while daily cumulative value of transpiration (E) decreased, and hence water use efficiency (WUE =P N/E) increased. Diurnal course of P N of C. microphylla was a double-peak curve, but the second peak in the curves of C. intermedia and C. korshinskii was not visible. These physiological characteristics are biological basis for the geographical distribution of these three Caragana species, and are in relation to water conditions of their habitats and distinctiveness in leaf hair of plant.  相似文献

Abstract

In the present study the effect of flavonoid compounds on the germination and fungal growth of the soil-borne tomato pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici was studied. Out of 12 flavonoid compounds only myricetin and luteolin exhibited a low stimulating activity on microconidia germination of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici, whereas the other flavonoids tested were inactive when applied at five different concentrations. In our study the tested flavonoids affect fungal growth differently to microconidia germination. Individual flavonoid concentrations resulted in a small increase of fungal growth, but the lowest flavonoid concentrations showed an inhibiting effect on fungal growth for all flavonoids tested. There is evidence to suggest, that low flavonoid concentrations exhibit slight antimicrobial properties against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici.  相似文献

Antagonistic Bacillus spp. displaying in vitro production of siderophore, chitinase, and β-1,3-glucanase were identified from dual culture assays. In independent greenhouse studies, seed bacterization and soil application of Bacillus atrophaeus S2BC-2 challenge inoculated with Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici (FOL) and Alternaria solani (AS) recorded low percent disease index of 25.3 and 28.7, respectively, over nonbacterised pathogen control (44.3 and 56.4). The low disease incidence corroborated with tomato growth promotion with high vigor index (8,041.2) and fresh plant weight (82.5 g) on challenge inoculation with FOL. Analysis of root and leaf samples in rhizobacterial treatment challenged with FOL and AS revealed maximum induction of chitinase (1.9 and 1.7 U/mg of protein, respectively) and β-1,3-glucanase (23.5 and 19.2 U/mg of protein, respectively). In native gel activity assays, the rhizobacterial treatment on challenge inoculation strongly expressed three high intensity PO isoforms along with one low intensity isoform. In studies on genetic diversity of the Bacillus strains by repetitive extragenomic palindromic-polymerase chain reaction (REP-PCR) and amplified rDNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) patterns, ARDRA was more highly discriminant than REP-PCR and allowed grouping of the strains and differentiation of the antagonistic strains from other isolates.  相似文献

The effects of applying nitrogen to a perennial ryegrass sward were studied in relation to the size and nature of populations of dipterous stem-bores. Two levels of both ammonium sulphate and calcium nitrate were applied to the sward. Larvae were more numerous in the plots treated with high levels of nitrogen regardless of the form applied. Also, there were more larvae in the plots treated with ammonium sulphate than in those treated with calcium nitrate. A limited range of stem-borer species predominated. These were Oscinella vastator, two forms of O. frit and Geomyza tripunctata. Stem-borer species were distributed differently between plots receiving high and low nitrogen levels; G. tripunctata occurred almost exclusively on plots receiving high nitrogen applications while O. vastator was more frequent in those receiving low levels of nitrogen.  相似文献

Summary Pure and mixed cultures of the dicotyledons Atriplex hortensis L. (C3 plant) and Amaranthus retroflexus L. (C4 plant) were maintained under open air conditions in standard soil at low and high nitrogen supply levels.A comparison of shoot dry weight and shoot length in the various series shows that the growth of the aboveground parts of both species was severely reduced under low N conditions. In both pure and mixed cultures the differences resulting from low N vs. high N conditions was less pronounced with Atriplex (C3 plant) than with Amaranthus (C4 plant). The root dry weight of the two species was not reduced so much under low N conditions as was the shoot dry weight. The low N plants were found to contain a larger proportion of their biomass in the roots than did the high N plants. In general the root proportion of Atriplex was greater than that of Amaranthus. The contents of organic nitrogen and nitrate and the nitrate reductase activity (NRA) per g dry weight of both species decreased continually throughout the experiments. With the exception of young plants, the low N plants always had tower contents of organic nitrogen and nitrate and nitrate reductase activities than did the high N plants. The highest values of NRA were measured in the leaf laminae. The eaves also exhibited the highest concentrations of organic nitrogen. The highest nitrate concentrations, however, were observed in the shoot axis, and in most cases the lowest nitrate values were found in the laminae. At the end of ne growing season this pattern was found to have been reversed with Atriplex, but not with Amaranthus. Thus Atriplex was able to maintain a higher NRA in the laminae than Amaranthus under low N conditions.The transpiration per leaf area of the C4 plant Amaranthus during the course of a day was substantially lower than that of the C3 plant Atriplex. There were no significant differences in transpiration between the low N and high N series of Amaranthus. The low N plants of Atriplex, however, clearly showed in most cases higher transpiration rates than the corresponding high N plants. These different transpiration rates of the high N and the low N Atriplex plants were also reflected in a distinct 13C discrimination.The sum of these results points to the conclusion that the C3 plant Atriplex hortensis can maintain a better internal inorganic nitrogen supply than the C4 plant Amaranthus retroflexus under low N conditions and an ample water supply, due to the larger root proportion and the more pronounced and flexible transpiration of the C3 plant.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. Karl Mägdefrau, Deisenhofen, on the ocasion of his 80th birthday  相似文献

Reproductive isolation among biological strains can be detected by analyzing reproductive barriers between populations. The Anastrepha fraterculus Wiedemann (Diptera: Tephritidae) cryptic species complex comprises eight morphotypes defined by morphometric characteristics. The present study analyzed the existence of pre‐ and post‐zygotic isolation among populations of A. sp.1 aff. fraterculus (A. sp.1) and A. sp.3 aff. fraterculus (A. sp.3) determined by tests of sexual compatibility, analyses of the temporal pattern of calling behavior, and the reproductive performance of the offspring of homotypic and heterotypic crosses. Pre‐zygotic tests indicated asymmetric matings with preferences for homotypic crosses. The A. sp.3 population demonstrated distinct characteristics, including low copulation percentages and a high proportion of homotypic copulations under crowded conditions. The females of the A. sp.1 population demonstrated lower copulation latency. The analyzed morphotypes demonstrated two peaks in pheromone emission activity, at the beginning and at the end of the morning and were differentiated in the abundance of males. The calling behavior of the hybrids between A. sp.1 male and A. sp.3 female crosses had an intermediate pattern compared to either parental type. Post‐zygotic compatibility tests indicated low viability of the cross between A. sp.3 males and A. sp.1 females. Pronounced asymmetries were found in the sex ratios of the offspring of heterotypic crosses, and only hybrids from A. sp.1 male vs. A. sp.3 female crosses produced descendants. The observed pre‐ and post‐zygotic incompatibilities reflect the probable occurrence of incipient speciation between A. sp.1 and A. sp.3. A more adequate taxonomic classification of this species complex that considers the distinct characteristics of each morphotype will be needed to improve environmentally wise control methods against this insect pest.  相似文献

The karyotypes of 24 species of the tribe Pipisini (Diptera: Syrphidae) are described and illustrated. Nearly all the species of Neocnemodon, Pipiza and Pipizella have 2n=8 chromosomes consisting of a short telocentric XY pair and three metacentric pairs increasing in relative length from long to very long. Pair II chromosomes in several Pipiza species have high metacentric to low submetacentric arm ratios. One Parapenium species is tentatively reported as having five pairs and another five or six pairs. The karyological evidence favours placing the tribe Pipizini in the subfamily Syrphinae rather than in the subfamily Milesiinae.  相似文献

Cytological studies were carried out on two wild species (L. hirsutum and L. pennellii) and the cultivated species (L. esculentum) of tomato and their F1 hybrids. Both parents and hybrids show a diploid chromosome number of 2n=24. The meiotic behaviour of the cultivated species showed a high degree of chromosome homology resulting in a high level of chiasmata frequency per bivalent. In contrast, the two wild species showed a slight increase in uniyalent frequency and a decrease in bivalent formation and chiasmata frequency. The meiotic behaviour of the hybrids showed a high level of univalents and low levels of bivalents as well as trivalents. Highly significant decreases in chiasmata frequency and increases in meiotic abnormalities, especially in the L. esculentum X L. pennellii hybrid, also were detected. The high meiotic irregularity and low chiasmata frequency recorded in the second hybrid indicated the disharmony and difference between its parental genomes and also served to predict its sterility. With regard to degree of pairing recorded in the hybrids, there is a possibility that sterility in such cases may refer to genetic factors in addition to the previously mentioned reasons. Pollen fertility showed no great difference between L. esculentum and L. hirsutum and their F1 hybrid, but a significant decrease was recorded in the L. esculentum X L. pennellii hybrid, which was clearly associated with high meiotic irregularity, low chiasmata frequency and chromosome association.  相似文献

Calotropis procera (Ait.) R.Br. (Apocynaceae), an invasive woody milkweed, has expanded its range in northern Australia affecting rangeland and pastoral productivity. While self‐compatibility should enhance the species range expansion, spread of C. procera is limited by the availability of larger wasp and bee species that are able to vector its solid pollinia. Pollination efficiency is thus likely dependent on both pollinator abundance and plant density. Calotropis procera flowers year round in Australia but fruiting is limited to the warm months of the year when pollinators are most abundant, indicating that seasonal regulation of reproduction may be due to pollinator limitation. We examine the propositions that C. procera reproduction is regulated by the interaction between plant population density and pollinator pressure and that low pollinator pressure causes low per capita plant fecundity. All pollinators belonged to Order Hymenoptera and pollinator composition was similar at six of the seven sites. Fruit production per plant (fecundity) was lower above and below intermediate densities (350–550 plants ha?1) of flowering plants with evidence of a weak Allee effect at lower plant density. Pollinator visitation rates per plant were low at high and low plant densities, and greatest at intermediate densities, while pollen supplementation experiments showed that C. procera is pollen limited (Pollen Limitation Indexfruit = 0.9) even at intermediate densities. Pollen limitation caused by low pollinator pressure at low plant densities and pollinator satiation at high plant densities may account for these fruit production trends. Management should be conducted in the colder months when pollinator pressure is low and plants are not reproducing. In addition, where stand eradication cannot be achieved in one attempt, management should reduce flowering plants to below intermediate densities where the fecundity per plant is low.  相似文献

Only two genera in the Rhodomelaceae share the morphological character of transverse division of periaxial cells into two or more tier cells in which the pit connection is retained between the lower cell and the axial cell: Bostrychia and Rhodolachne. One species, Rhodolachne radicosa Itono, has been reported from mangroves, a common habitat for Bostrychia. Many collections of an entity similar to Rhodolachne radicosa have been made from localities around the Indo‐Pacific. Culture observations show a Polysiphonia‐type sexual life history in Malaysia and New Caledonia isolates that produce self‐compatible bisexual gametophytes. The New Caledonia isolate also has unisexual gametophytes. An isolate from New South Wales (Australia) reproduces asexually through successive generations of tetrasporophytes. The Thailand isolate has successive generations of mixed‐phase tetrasporophytes. The tetrasporangial stichidia also bear male spermatangial sectors, but female structures are lacking. Western Australia and Madagascar isolates do not reproduce in culture. Molecular evidence, based on sequencing of the rbcL and the large subunit ribosomal RNA genes, shows that these isolates belong to the genus Bostrychia. Low molecular weight carbohydrate analysis reveals high levels of digeneaside in all isolates. The sugar hexitol sorbitol, an osmolyte characteristic of Bostrychia, occurs in all isolates, whereas the Madagascar and New Caledonia isolates have very low levels of dulcitol. Molecular, low molecular weight carbohydrate and morphological evidence show that Rhodolachne radicosa belongs within the genus Bostrychia. Leaf stomatal density and index of Ginkgo biloba L. were both significantly (P<0.05) reduced after 3 years growth at elevated CO2 (560 ppm), with values comparable to those of cuticles prepared from Triassic and Jurassic fossil Ginkgo leaves thought to have developed in the high CO2 'greenhouse world' of the Mesozoic. A reciprocal transfer experiment indicated that reductions in stomatal density and index irreversibly reduced stomatal conductance, particularly at low leaf-to-air vapour pressure deficits and low internal leaf CO2 concentrations (Ci). These effects probably contributed to the high water-use efficiency of Ginkgo spp. in the Mesozoic relative to those of the present, as determined from carbon isotope measurements of extant and fossil cuticles.Keywords: Stomata, gas exchange, elevated CO2, fossils.   相似文献
