The objective was to examine changes in trace elements due to thyroid cancer in humans. Serum levels and tissue contents of trace elements (Zn, Cu, Mn, Mg, Fe and Se) were measured in 43 patients with thyroid cancer before and 4 days after surgery were compared to normal values. The serum levels of zinc in cancer patients were lower than those of normal subjects. Surgical removal of the cancer resulted in the restoration of these levels. Although serum Cu levels in patients were not different from normal, but post-operatively these levels rose significantly (p < 0.001). Levels of Fe, Mg and Mn were significantly lower (p < 0.001) post-operatively. There was no significant change in Serum Se levels. The thyroid tissue contents of these trace elements did not show a difference between the normal (Juxta-tumor) thyroid tissue and the cancerous lesion. Out of the six trace elements examined, the decrease of serum levels of zinc in cancer patients may be linked to the disease condition. It is suggested that this change: (a) may be used to demonstrate successful cancer surgery and (b) may have implications for a long-term follow-up of thyroid cancer patients. 相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between trace elements and the incidence of cervical cancer. Tissue
and serum levels of six elements (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ca, and Se) and the Cu/Zn ratio in 40 cases of patients with cervical cancer,
30 cases of uterine myoma, and 50 healthy subjects were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry; the selenium content
was determined by atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The results showed that the tissue contents of Zn, Se, and Ca were significantly
lower and the Cu and Fe concentrations and Cu/Zn ratio were significantly higher in cervical cancer tissue than that for paired
nonlesion tissue (p<0.02 and p<0.001, respectively). The serum levels of Zn, Se, Ca, and Fe were lower and Cu and Mn levels and Cu/Zn ratio were higher
in patients with cervical cancer than in healthy subjects (p<0.01 and p<0.001, respectively) and in the uterine myoma group compared with healthy subjects (p< 0.05–0.001). There are no significant differences in the contents of six elements and the Cu/Zn ratio between uterine myoma
tissue and paired nonlesion tissue. The results showed also that the Fe level and Cu/Zn ratio were significantly higher and
the Zn and Se levels were significantly lower in cervical cancer tissue than in uterine myoma tissue (p<0.01 and p<0.001, respectively). The serum Cu level and Cu/Zn ratio were significantly higher in the cervical cancer group than the
uterine myoma group (p<0.01). Data were also analyzed using multivarate logistic regression. After adjustment for age, occupation, life habit, and
other covariates for the development of cervical cancer, the odds ratios were 22.64 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 5.64–90.88,
p=0.001) for Cu, 0.11 (95% CI: 0.034–0.373; p=0.005) for Zn, and 0.60 (95% CI: 0.36–0.99, p=0.01) for Se. Thus, the serum and tissue levels of Cu increase and the deficiency of Zn and Se may be risk factors for the
development of cervical cancer. 相似文献

Background Trace elements are involved in many key pathways involving cell cycle control. The levels of trace metals such as iron, copper,
and zinc in colorectal liver metastases have not previously been assessed. Methods The trace element content in snap-frozen cancerous liver tissue from patients who underwent liver resection for colorectal
liver metastases was compared with the normal surrounding liver (distant from the cancer) using X-ray fluorescence (XRF).
Results X-ray fluorescence was performed on a total of 60 samples from 30 patients. Of these 29 matched pairs (of cancer and normal
liver distant from cancer from the same patient) were eligible for univariate analysis. Iron (0.00598 vs. 0.02306), copper
(0.00541 vs. 0.00786) and zinc (0.01790 vs. 0.04873) were statistically significantly lower in the cancer tissue than the
normal liver. Iron, copper, and zinc were lower in the cancer tissue than in the normal liver in 24/29 (82.8%), 23/29 (79.3%),
and 28/29 (96.6%) of cases respectively. Multivariate analysis of the 60 samples revealed that zinc was the only trace element
decreased in the cancer tissue after adjusting for the other elements. Zinc levels were not affected by any of the histopathological
variables. Conclusion Iron, copper, and zinc are lower in colorectal liver metastases than normal liver. An investigation into the pathways underlying
these differences may provide a new understanding of cancer development and possible novel therapeutic targets. 相似文献

The concentrations of trace elements are closely related to tumor genesis, progression, and therapy. In order to establish the extent to which trace elements apply to lung cancer, 15 trace elements were determined in 60 lung tissue samples from residents of Xuanwei and Fuyuan, two counties with extremely high lung cancer incidences in Yunnan province, China. The results indicated that the levels of V, Fe, Zn, Cd, Ni, Cu, Se, and Pb in the lung cancer tissues were significantly different from those in benign tissues. Among the eight elements, the levels of V, Fe, Zn, and Cd in the lung cancer tissues were lower than those in the benign tissues, while those of Ni, Cu, Se, and Pb were higher. Multiple conditional logistic regression showed that among the 15 elements, Cu, Pb (β > 0, OR > 1), and Zn (β < 0, OR < 1) were closely related to the lung cancer. Cu and Pb were classified as risk factors for local lung cancer and Zn was identified as a protective factor. The results obtained will provide dietary suggestions in terms of how to reduce lung cancer risks by appropriately balancing the intakes of certain trace elements especially for individuals who are from those two counties. 相似文献

It has become evident over the last two decades that there is an intimate relationship between the trace elements and cancer.
Some trace elements have been shown to be carcinogens, others appear to provide protection against cancer. Profound changes
in trace element concentrations and distribution occur in patients with cancer, but most changes remain undefined.
A review of a number of studies of trace element changes in patients with cancer demonstrates that simple correlations of
trace element levels in disease are of only limited use. Such reports underscore the need for large-scale studies that consider
the many variables of malignancies and of trace element chemistry. The variables that must be considered for cancer include
tissue of origin; histologic, pathologic and clinical staging; nutritional status as reflected by serum levels of calcium,
iron, magnesium, phosphorus, the electrolytes, pH, albumen, and globulin; endocrine balance, effects of previous and concurrent
therapies such as surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal manipulation, immunotherapy, and radiotherapy; history of exposure to toxic
agents; and the presence of other disease.
Similarly, trace element studies entail variables that must be considered and controlled prospectively, including timing and
techniques of sampling, storage, and analysis, and simultaneous measurement of at least the majority of possibly interrelated
elements rather than studying one element at a time.
The various national cooperative oncology groups such as ECOG, SWOG, and SEOG now offer unusually well-studied groups of cancer
patients who are managed according to carefully and prospectively defined protocols in participating institutions. With present
knowledge, it is now time to approach these groups with a proposal to incorporate trace element studies in their protocols.
A potential protocol will be discussed. 相似文献

BackgroundConsidering the affecting role of environmental factors including trace elements and heavy metals on the upper gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, there is paucity of empirical research in tissue evaluations.ObjectivesThe present study aimed to measure the tissue content of some trace elements and heavy metals such as zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), tin (Sn), copper (Cu), aluminum (Al), lead (Pb), and iron (Fe) in esophagus and gastric cancerous tissues compared to the adjacent healthy tissues.MethodsIn a cross-sectional study, the aforementioned trace elements and heavy metals were evaluated among patients with esophagus and gastric cancers. During endoscopy, multiple samples were taken from cancerous lesions and the adjacent healthy tissues. The classic flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) method was employed as the study framework.ResultsFifty patients with the mean age of 53.92 ± 8.73 were enrolled in the current study. Thirteen patients suffered from esophageal cancer and thirty-seven patients were afflicted with gastric cancer. The results revealed significant differences in the median concentrations of Zn, Cr, Sn and, Cu (P < 0.05) between the two groups. Although there were no significant changes in the tissue content in the esophageal samples, in the median concentrations of Zn, Cr and, Sn (P < 0.05) in gastric tissues, significant differences were observed. Further, the results indicated that gender enacted an affecting role in the level of some trace elements and heavy metals.ConclusionThe tissue contents of some elements were altered in gastric and esophageal cancers; this difference may reflect the underlying mechanism of cellular changing during the tumorigenesis or direct exposure of these elements. It seems that under the shade of other coexisting risk factors, larger cohort studies are suggested to be conducted to investigate other probable aspects in this area of interest. 相似文献

Cervical cancer is a leading cause of death by cancer among women worldwide. It is necessary to develop and refine cervical cancer models to more accurately reflect human tumor type. The relevance of cervical cancer to trace element was studied in this paper. By means of quantitative trace element analysis in models and patients with cervical cancer, the tissue and serum levels of trace elements in papillomaviruses-induced cancer models were more similar to that of patients than the levels in models induced by HeLa cell and methylcholanthrene. The results reflect papillomaviruses model most accurately mimic in vivo carcinogenesis of patients with cervical cancer. It will have a superior predictive value over HeLa cell and methylcholanthrene models in pre-clinical trials. The papillomaviruses-induced cervical cancer can provide more reliable models for testing the efficacy of drugs in treating human cancers. 相似文献

Testicular zinc, copper and iron concentrations in male rats exposed to subacute and subchronic formaldehyde gas inhalation. 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The level of trace elements such as Zn, Cu and Fe in testicular tissue is an indication of the condition of the tissue as these elements take over important tasks. Zinc and copper are the prosthetic groups of several metalloenzymes including superoxide dismutase (SOD) which is an important antioxidant enzyme in the cellular protection from reactive oxygen species. If concentrations of these trace elements decrease significantly, SOD cannot detoxify harmful oxygen species. In this study, adult male rats (wistar-albino) were exposed to formaldehyde at different periods (subacute and subchronic) and concentrations (0; 12.2; 24.4 mg.L-1). Body and testis weights were recorded and compared with control groups. The metals described above were determined in rat testicular tissue by atomic absorption spectrometry by using wet ashing. We conclude that subacute or subchronic exposure to formaldehyde have caused growth retardation and altered levels of trace elements, including copper, zinc and iron, in testicular tissue, and may induce further oxidative damage on testicular tissue leading to spermatozoal abnormalities. 相似文献

Trace elemental analysis was carried out in the biological samples of cancer-afflicted intestine using the particle-induced
X-ray emission technique (PIXE). A 2-MeV proton beam was employed to excite the samples. From the present results, it can
be seen that the concentration of the elements Cr, Fe, and Ni are higher in the cancerous tissue of the intestine than those
observed in the normal tissue, whereas the concentration levels of the element Zn is slightly lower in the cancer tissue of
intestine than that observed in the normal tissue. The concentrations of S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Co, and Cu in the cancer tissue
of the intestine are in agreement with those observed in the normal tissues within standard deviations. The present results
support the previous observations that Ni and Cr are carcinogenic agents. The observed slightly low levels of zinc in the
cancer tissue of the intestine suggest that zinc could possibly inhibit the tumor growth and development of neoplastic transformation.
For correctly assessing the role played by the trace elements in initiating, promoting, or inhibiting cancer in various organs,
there is a need for the acquisition of more data by trace elemental analysis from several investigations of this type undertaken
in different regions. 相似文献

Multielement analysis in serum of thyroid cancer patients before and after a surgical operation 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Concentrations of trace elements Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mg, and Sr in the serum of 50 thyroid cancer patients and 50 healthy controls
were analyzed comprehensively by Pattern Recognition Analysis Method. Based on the Principal Component Analysis Method, Zn,
Cu, and Sr were found to be the principal elements with significant variations between patients and healthy controls. According
to the Mahalanolis Distance Decision and Nonlinear Mapping Methods, the trace elements levels in the serum of cancerous patients
were found significantly different from that of controls.
For 16 thyroid malignant tumor patients who underwent surgery, sample points of patients after surgery were directional away
from corresponding points before surgery. However, an overlapping was found and separation between two groups of points was
not complete. This finding suggests that there may be a latency period for the restoration of trace element levels after removal
of the malignant tumorous tissue. 相似文献

The pathogenesis of some heart diseases has been associated with changes in the balance of certain trace elements. However, whether blood trace element changes exist that are related to changes in the cardiovascular system are, in most cases, unknown. In this study, blood trace element levels were analysed in 46 patients with non-rheumatic aortic valve sclerosis that were previously shown to have a disturbed trace element balance in their valve tissue, including 11/15 elements. Results showed significant changes of blood levels of 8/15 trace elements in these patients when compared with blood levels in 46 healthy controls. Of these elements, Cd and Mg were the only elements that increased in both blood and valves. Cu and Se were increased in blood but decreased in valves, whereas Co and Zn were decreased in blood but increased in valves. Several elements (As, Ca, Fe, Pb, and V) were unchanged in blood although changed in valves. Although Mn and Hg showed changes in blood, this was not evident in the valves. Al and Ag were the only elements that did not change in both blood and valves. Significant covariation in blood and valve levels was only observed for Al and Pb. The recorded pattern of trace element changes indicates a complex competition/exchange between body compartments in this disease, where the increased blood Cu/Zn ratio suggests an ongoing infectious/inflammatory process. 相似文献

Pattern recognition has been used in this paper to analyze trace element levels in patients diagnosed with nasal-pharynx cancer (NPC) and in healthy control subjects. Trace elements such as Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Mg have been tested in samples of hair and whole blood. Through Mahalanobis Distance Decision analysis, we have achieved good classification effects in whole blood samples: Efficiency for distinguishing patients is 96% and that of healthy controls is 90%. Classification hair samples is inferior to whole blood: Decision accuracy for patients is 58% and healthy controls is 90%. These results are also shown in a nonlinear mapping figure. At the same time, we have also determined 5 trace element levels in 16 other cancer patients' nonneoplastic and cancerous tissue, with no significant difference between them: Decision accuracy of cancerous tissue is 63%, and in nonneoplastic tissue is 50%, hence, we cannot identify them. It can be inferred that there is no idiosyncratic change of trace elements in cancer patients' neoplastic tissue, the change of a cancerous person may occur in the whole body. 相似文献

A change in the normal concentration of essential trace elements in the human body might lead to major health disturbances.
In this study, hair samples were collected from 115 human subject, including 55 healthy people and 60 patients with prostate
cancer. The concentrations of 20 trace elements (TEs) in these samples were measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry.
A support vector machine was used to investigate the relationship between TEs and prostate cancer. It is found that, among
the 20 TEs, 10 (Mg P, K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe. Cu, Zn, and Se) are related to the risk of prostate cancer. These 10 TEs were used
to build the prediction model for prostate cancer. The model obtained can satisfactorily distinguish the healthy samples from
the cancer samples. Furthermore, the cross-validation by leaving-one method proved that the prediction ability of this model
reaches as high as 95.8%. It is practical to predict the risk of prostate cancer using this model in the clinics 相似文献

In studies of trace elements in biological tissue, it is imperative that sample handling does not substantially change element
concentrations. In many cases, fresh tissue is not available for study, but formalin-fixed tissue is. Formalin fixation has
the potential to leach elements from the tissue, but few studies have been published in this area. The concentrations of 19
elements were determined by high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in formalin in which human and rat
brain samples had been stored for different time durations ranging from weeks up to several years. Additional analysis was
carried out in fixed brain samples. There was substantial leaching of elements from the tissue into the formalin, and the
leaching varied considerably between different elements. For example, formalin concentrations of As, Cd, Mg, Rb, and Sb increased
more than 100-fold upon long-term (years) storage, while for Ni and Cr, the leaching was negligible. The degree of leaching
was strongly time-dependent. In conclusion, formalin fixation and storage of biological tissue has the potential to leach
substantial fractions of several trace elements from the tissue. The potential of leaching must be critically considered when
using formalin-fixed biological tissue in trace metal analysis. 相似文献

The present study aims to examine the changes in the serum levels of trace elements before and after the operation in thyroid cancer patients. The study registered 50 individuals, of whom 25 were female and 25 were male. The patients were allocated to four groups: group 1: male thyroid cancer patients group (n = 15), group 2: female thyroid cancer patients group (n = 15), group 3: male control group (n = 10), group 4: female control group (n = 10). The subjects in groups 1 and 2 were the patients who were post-operatively diagnosed with a pathological malignancy in the thyroid tissue samples. Blood samples were collected from all subjects before the operation, immediately after the operation, and on the post-operative day 15. Additionally, thyroid tissue samples were taken from all subjects post-operatively. Some elements in the blood and tissue samples were determined using the atomic emission method. Zinc and selenium levels of groups 1 and 2 in the pre- and post-operative measurements were significantly lower than those in the control groups (p < 0.05), but were higher in the thyroid tissue (p < 0.05). Serum zinc and selenium levels measured in the subjects on the post-operative day 15 were similar to those measured in the controls. Our study show that changes in the serum and thyroid tissue levels of trace elements like zinc and selenium, which play a critical role in thyroid function, might be associated with the pathogenesis of thyroid cancer. 相似文献

Xuanwei and Fuyuan, located in the Yunnan province in southwest of China, are known to have a strikingly high incidence of
lung cancer. Among the many factors that have been explored, the association between lung cancer and trace elements has not
received enough attention. In this study, dietary samples were collected from 60 families of the lung cancer and control groups
and abundances of 14 trace elements were determined using inductively coupled–plasma mass spectroscopy. Accuracy and sensitivity
of the method were demonstrated by analyzing national standard reference materials. The results showed that the dietary intake
of the trace elements contributed 96.6% of total intake. Among the 14 elements tested, cadmium and titanium were found to
be present at a significantly higher level in the food consumed by the cancer group than by the control group. The intake
of selenium by the population living in the areas is much lower than what it should be, with the people in the cancer group
experiencing even more severe selenium deficiency. In addition, in both groups, the intakes of several essential elements
(iron, copper, and zinc) from food and the drinking water were found to be significantly lower than required according to
the Chinese Dietary Reference Intakes. The present study of the relationship between trace element intakes of lung cancer
cases and controls provides important information urgently needed for the assessment of lung cancer risk of healthy subjects.
The study also gives rational dietary suggestions to local residents which is important to the early diagnosis and pretreatment
of lung cancer. 相似文献

The changes in the concentrations of a number of trace elements have been determined by neutron activation analysis in a solid tumor model, blood and its host liver, following 5-fluorouracil administration. Studies have also been carried out for non-tumor bearing animals after 5-fluorouracil. The changes in some of the trace elements parallel destructive changes found in the tumor. Studies are in progress to determine if changes in the urinary concentrations of these trace elements parallel the time sequence of the destructive changes found in the tumor. The potential clinical usefulness of these trace elements are being evaluated along with other biological markers which may eventually be utilized to assess the therapeutic effectiveness of different treatment modalities as well as monitor the patient for possible reoccurrence of the cancer following treatment. 相似文献

BackgroundTrace elements have important influence on body function primarily because of the vital role they have in many physiological processes. Their alterations have been found in many disorders, including cancer. It has been well known for decades that disturbances in elemental concentration may lead to cell damaging, DNA injuries and imbalance in oxidative burden. Our study tried to determine the difference of trace elements concentrations between colorectal adenocarcinoma and adjacent healthy intestinal tissue.Methods59 subjects participated in this study. Healthy colon mucosa samples and colon tumor tissue samples were obtained from patients previously diagnosed with colon carcinoma by standard diagnostic procedures. Analysis of the elements was performed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).ResultsThe results showed that Na, K, Mg, Ca, Cu, Zn, Se, Mn, Cd, Cr and Hg significantly differ between malignant tissue of colorectal cancer (CRC) and adjacent healthy bowel tissue. We have, also, found that Cu/Zn tissue ratio was significantly higher in CRC compared to a healthy tissue and that patients with higher CRC stages had also significantly higher ratio.ConclusionsSince this is the first such study in Balkan region, we assume that results of our study could be a good indicator of elemental alterations in colorectal cancer of Balkan population, due to similarity in lifestyle, dietary intake, pollution and exposure to toxic elements. 相似文献

Selenium is an essential trace element with antioxidative, antimutagenic, antiviral and anticarcinogenic properties. There is increasing evidence that the dietary selenium intakes are sub-optimal in the populations of many countries and that human cancer mortalities would significantly decline if additional selenium was made available either through supplementation or the fortification of certain foods. An important property of selenium is its interaction with other elements that may be present in foods, the water, the workplace and the environment, e.g. As, Cu, Ni, Co, Cr, Mn, Zn, Cd, Sn, Pb, Hg, Bi, Mo, Ag, Au, etc. The sequestration of elements by selenium represents an efficient natural detoxification mechanism for some of these elements but also results in the physiological inactivation of selenium. Animal experiments confirm that the chronic exposure to low levels of these elements abolishes the cancer-protective effect of selenium. Human cancer is likewise significantly determined by the interactions of selenium with other elements, as evidenced by epidemiological, ecological and case-control studies. Cadmium, for example, is a key risk-increasing element for prostate cancer; for breast cancer, Cd, Cr, Zn are mainly contributing; for bronchial cancer (in smelter workers), Cd, As, Cr, Sb, Co, La, all these elements are in a reciprocal relationship with Se. While selenium remains the key cancer-protective trace element, the interpretation of its mode of action necessitates consideration of the effects of selenium antagonistic elements. 相似文献
