Several million dollars are lost in the United States each year as a result of post harvest diseases of crops. Claim costs to railroads alone in 1958 amounted to $11 million. This work demonstrates that it is possible to extend the shelf-life of fresh fruits and vegetables at room as well as at refrigeration temperatures by gamma radiation, by surface pasteurization, sprout inhibition, and also by retarding the ripening processes. The information presented should be useful to researchers, shippers, packers, and processors.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Body weight is at least partly controlled by the choices made by a human in response to external stimuli. Changes in body weight are mainly caused by energy intake. By analyzing the mechanisms involved in food intake, we considered that molecular diffusion plays an important role in body weight changes. We propose a model based on Fick's second law of diffusion to simulate the relationship between energy intake and body weight. RESULTS: This model was applied to food intake and body weight data recorded in humans; the model showed a good fit to the experimental data. This model was also effective in predicting future body weight. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, this model based on molecular diffusion provides a new insight into the body weight mechanisms.  相似文献

We tested whether long-term administration of voglibose (VO) prevents diet induced obesity in addition to hypoglycemic effects in high fat fed mice and further investigated the underlying mechanisms by which voglibose exerts its weight lowering effect. Male C57BL/6 mice were fed ad libitum for 12 weeks with the control diet (CTL), high-fat diet (HFD) or the HFD with VO supplementations. Blood lipid profile, plasma leptin levels and hepatic triglyceride content, as well as expressions of genes involved in appetite and mitochondrial function were examined. The results showed that VO significantly reduced body weight, fat mass and energy intakes in high fat fed mice. VO showed improved metabolic profiles including blood glucose, triglyceride and free fatty acid. Elevated levels of plasma leptin in HFD were significantly reduced with the VO, furthermore, VO modulated the hypothalamic expressions of leptin receptors and appetite related genes. VO showed the upregulated expressions of PGC-1 in the liver and epididymal adipose tissue. In conclusion, VO may exert antiobesity properties through reductions in energy intake and improvement in mitochondrial function, indicating that VO has potential therapeutic use in patients with obesity, type 2 diabetes, and related complications.  相似文献

Prolactin, which induced significant gain in body weight and in the weight of the cervical and abdominal fat deposits had no effect on daily total food intake in spotted munia. The hormone changed the feeding pattern from a modal type to almost continuous feeding, increased whole body oxygen consumption of the birds, and had no effect on total hopping index. Prolactin-induced fattening, therefore seems due to neither an increased caloric intake, nor a decreased metabolic expenditure, but probably reflects better utilization of food.  相似文献

The effects of chronic central administration of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) on food intake, body weight, and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical hormones were investigated in rats. The infusion of ovine CRF at doses of 0.3 and 1.0 microgram/h continuously induced decrease in food intake and a suppression of body-weight gain for 7 days. The inhibition of body weight gain induced by CRF could not be accounted for solely by a decreased food intake since the suppression of body-weight gain in CRF-infused rats was significantly greater than that observed in rats which received the same amount of food as the CRF-infused rats. The content of proopiomelanocortin (POMC) -derived peptides in the anterior lobe of the pituitary as well as the plasma levels of ACTH and corticosterone (B) were significantly elevated in CRF-treated rats, and the CRF content in the hypothalamus was significantly decreased. These results suggest that chronic intracerebroventricular (icv) administration of CRF stimulates the synthesis and secretion of POMC-related peptides in the pituitary and suppresses food intake accompanied by inhibition of body weight gain. The results are similar to clinical and laboratory findings observed in patients with stress-induced anorexia.  相似文献

The evidence for a major gene for body mass index (BMI) was investigated using complex segregation analysis (POINTER) in 1691 individuals belonging to 432 nuclear families residing in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, India. Since the BMI is significantly correlated with energy intake (EI) and energy expenditure of activity (EEA), the effects of each were removed from the BMI using regression analysis, and the segregation analysis was repeated on the energy-adjusted BMI. For BMI, a putative major locus could not be ruled out, and the effect (q = 0.25, accounting for 37% of the phenotypic variance) was remarkably similar to that reported in Western populations. After adjusting the BMI for EI and EEA, however, no evidence in support of a major gene could be observed, suggesting either that EI and EEA mediate the expression of the major gene effect on BMI, or that the same major gene may influence both traits. The pleiotropy hypothesis was further explored using a simple bivariate familial correlation model, in which the significance of familial cross-trait correlations (e.g., BMI in parents with BMI as predicted from the energy variables in the offspring) was examined. The cross-trait resemblance between the two measures was significant for all biological relatives, verifying the presence of shared heritable determinants (i.e., the same gene[s] and/or familial environments) accounting for 58% of the covariation. The significant cross-trait spouse correlations further suggested that at least part of the cross-trait resemblance may be due to shared environmental factors. Therefore, we conclude that there is strong evidence for shared genetic effects between BMI and the energy variables.  相似文献

Energy homeostasis is controlled by a complex neuroendocrine system consisting of peripheral signals like leptin and central signals, in particular, neuropeptides. Several neuropeptides with anorexigenic (POMC, CART, and CRH) as well as orexigenic (NPY, AgRP, and MCH) actions are involved in this complex (partly redundant) controlling system. Starvation as well as overfeeding lead to changes in expression levels of these neuropeptides, which act downstream of leptin, resulting in a physiological response. In this review the role of several anorexigenic and orexigenic (hypothalamic) neuropeptides on food intake and body weight regulation is summarized.  相似文献

The polyhydroxylated nortropane alkaloids called calyste-ginesoccur in many plants of the Convolvulaceae, Solanaceae, andMoraceae families. Certain of these alkaloids exhibit potentinhibitory activities against glycosidases and the recentlydemonstrated occurrence of calystegines in the leaves, skins,and sprouts of potatoes (Solatium tuberosum), and in the leavesof the eggplant (S.melongena), has raised concerns regardingthe safety of these vegetables in the human diet. We have surveyedthe occurrence of calystegines in edible fruits and vegetablesof the families Convolvulaceae, Solanaceae, and Moraceae byGC-MS. Calystegines A3, B1, B2, and C1 were detected in allthe edible fruits and vegetables tested; sweet and chili peppers,potatoes, eggplants, tomatoes, Physalis fruits, sweet potatoes,and mulberries. Calystegines B1 and C1 were potent competitiveinhibitors of the bovine, human, and rat β-glucosidaseactivities, with K1 values of 150, 10, and 1.9 µM, respectivelyfor B1 and 15,1.5, and 1 µM, respectively, for C1. CalystegineB2 was a strong competitive inhibitor of the -galactosidaseactivity in all the livers. Human β-xylosidase was inhibitedby all four nortropanes, with calystegine C1 having a K1 of0.13 µM. Calystegines A3 and B2 selectively inhibitedthe rat liver β-glucosidase activity. Food intake, food retrieval, and body weight changes were measured in female Syrian hamsters maintained under long and short photoperiods, and in animals sustaining pinealectomy or sham surgery. Animals maintained under short photoperiods gained more weight, ingested more food, and brought more food from more distant compartments into their nest compartments than did animals maintained under long photoperiods. Pinealectomy prevented the short-day elevations in body weight and food retrieval during the period of gonadal recrudescence, but it did not produce significant changes during the period of gonadal regression; in contrast, pinealectomy prevented the short-day increases in food intake only during initial weeks of the period of gonadal regression: The effects of photoperiod or pinealectomy were not evident for any of the dependent measures during pregnancy. The role of the pineal gland in mediating short-day effects is discussed.  相似文献

Artificial sweeteners are widely used all over the world. They may assist in weight management, prevention of dental caries, control of blood glucose of diabetics, and also can be used to replace sugar in foods. In the animal experimentation mice were given oral doses of water solutions of table top artificial sweeteners (saccharin, cyclamate based, acesulfame-K based, and aspartame) the amount of maximum Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) ad libitum. The controls received only tap water with the same drinking conditions as the treated groups. The mice were fed chow ad libitum.We measured food intake and body weight once a week, water and solutions of artificial sweeteners intake twice a week. The data were analysed by statistical methods (T-probe, regression analysis).Consumption of sweeteners resulted in significantly increased body weight; however, the food intake did not change.These results question the effect of non-caloric artificial sweeteners on weight-maintenance or body weight decrease.  相似文献

beta-Chlornaltrexamine (beta-CNA) is a non-equilibrium opioid receptor antagonist which alkylates and inactivates opioid receptors. Because opioid peptides are thought to contribute to the regulation of food intake, we examined the effects of intracerebroventricular (icv) injections of beta-CNA on the food intake and body weight of male rats. We also tested the ability of beta-CNA to block food intake stimulated by selective agonists of kappa, mu and delta opioid receptors: dynorphin A2 (DYN), Tyr-D-Ala-Gly-(Me)Phe-Gly-ol (DAGO), and [(D-Ser2,Leu5]-enkephalin-Thr6 (DSLET). Treatment with beta-CNA caused a long-term (2-4 days) reduction in daily food intake and a concomitant reduction in body weight. An additional experiment indicated that the weight loss after beta-CNA treatment could be completely accounted for by the reduction in intake. beta-CNA treatment also abolished or greatly attenuated the feeding effects of DAGO, DSLET and DYN, even when these peptides were tested 26 hours after beta-CNA administration. The long duration of the effects of beta-CNA suggests that this compound will be a useful pharmacological tool in further study of the opioid feeding system.  相似文献

We have previously demonstrated that running-wheel access normalizes the food intake and body weight of Otsuka Long-Evens Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rats. Following 6 wk of running-wheel access beginning at 8 wk of age, the body weight of OLETF rats remains reduced, demonstrating a lasting effect on their phenotype. In contrast, access to a high-fat diet exacerbates the hyperphagia and obesity of OLETF rats. To determine whether diet modulates the long-term effects of exercise, we examined the effects of high-fat diet on food intake and body weight in OLETF rats that had prior access to running wheels for 4 wk. We found that 4 wk of running exercise significantly decreased food intake and body weight of OLETF rats. Consistent with prior results, 4 wk of exercise also produced long-lasting effects on food intake and body weight in OLETF rats fed a regular chow. When running wheels were relocked, OLETF rats stabilized at lower levels of body weight than sedentary OLETF rats. However, access to a high-fat diet offset these effects. When OLETF rats were switched to a high-fat diet following wheel relocking, they significantly increased food intake and body weight, so that they reached levels similar to those of sedentary OLETF rats fed a high-fat diet. Gene expression determination of hypothalamic neuropeptides revealed changes that appeared to be appropriate responses to the effects of diet and running exercise. Together, these results demonstrate that high-fat diet modulates the long-lasting effects of exercise on food intake and body weight in OLETF rats.  相似文献
