Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) were first found in the Ebro River (Spain) in Ribaroja reservoir, in the summer of 2001. This paper reports a study to detect parasites in this bivalve species. From September 2003 to August 2004, a total of 1380 zebra mussels were collected and dissected or sectioned in paraffin and haematoxylin and eosin staining. We observed the presence of Phyllodistomum folium (Olfers, 1816) in two hosts (prevalence 0.14%). Sporocysts containing metacercariae were located within the gill lamellae. One of the mussels was collected in January and the other one in July. In both cases the shell length was >2 cm. P. folium had not been previously reported in Spain and D. polymorpha is its only known intermediate host. It represents a new invasive species in this river basin, presumably introduced together with the zebra mussels.  相似文献

The most frequently used antimitotic agent in cytogenetic studies is colchicine. We investigated whether the initial treatment of trematodes for karyological analysis with colchicine would have mutagenic or degradational effect on rDNA sequences. Dreissena polymorpha is the intermediate host of Phyllodistomum folium and Bucephalus polymorphus, and the sporocyst stage of these trematode species develop, respectively, in the gills and gonads of this mussel. Sporocysts of P. folium and B. polymorphus were obtained from D. polymorpha collected from waterbodies in Belarus and in Lithuania. 5.8S and 28S rDNA genes, ITS1 and ITS2 of P folium and B. polymorphus were sequenced and compared, and no nucleotide sequence differences between colchicine treated and untreated trematodes were found. Based on these results, we conclude that colchicine treatment for 3-5 h has no mutagenic or degradational effect on rDNA sequences. During the course of this investigation, two genetically different P. folium samples were noted in Belarus.  相似文献

Samples of cyprinid fishes from Esthwaite Water, Westmorland, have been examined and identified as roach ( Rutilus rutilus ), rudd ( Scardinius erythrophthalmus ), with a high degree (37%) of hybridization between these species. The distinguishing features of roach and rudd are discussed in the light of the difficulty of distinguishing the roach x rudd hybrid from the roach. It is concluded that the only reliable characters are the number and external morphology of the pharyngeal teeth.  相似文献

The occurrence of hybrids between chub, Leuciscus cephalus , and roach, Rutilus rutilus , from three rivers in England is reported. The hybrids are described and illustrated, and means of identification are indicated. Chub X roach hybrids, like those between other leuciscine cyprinid species, can be positively identified by the number and form of the pharyngeal teeth.  相似文献

The ecology of roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.), and dace, Leuciscus leuciscus (L.), populations from different regions of the R. Exe catchment was studied. Dace were the predominant cyprinid in the middle reaches whilst roach dominated in the slow-flowing lower reaches. Each species showed maximum growth rate and reproductive effort in its preferred habitat, i.e. where it dominated the fish community. The diet of roach consisted mainly of vegetable material, whilst dace were omnivorous. Although each species had a characteristic diet, there was considerable overlap. There was little evidence that variability between regions in growth rates of each species resulted from competition for food.  相似文献

The obligate fish ectoparasite Argulus coregoni is strictly specific to salmonids and is very rarely found on other fish species. The ability of the parasite to grow and complete its life cycle on a cyprinid host, Rutilus rutilus, was compared with that on a typical salmonid host, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Rearing experiments were run for 42 d with newly hatched metanauplii in flow-through tanks. Body length and sex of the parasites were recorded every 5 d. Growth rates on O. mykiss exceeded those on R. rutilus from the age of 2 wk, at which time the parasites reached a length of about 3.5 mm. Males grew faster than females at the beginning of the experiment up to a length of 2.5 to 3.0 mm; thereafter, a faster growth rate was observed in females. In another experiment, association of parasites with the hosts was monitored and residence time defined as the period between attachment and first detachment from the host. Longer residence time was observed on O. mykiss than on R. rutilus; female parasites stayed on both fish species longer than did males. Faster growth of parasites could be associated with longer uninterrupted periods of attachment to hosts, since frequent detachment means higher energy losses and less time available for feeding. Despite its slower growth on R. rutilus, A. coregoni matured and laid egg clutches, but took 5 d longer than on O. mykiss. The potential of A. coregoni to complete its life cycle on cyprinids could have important ecological consequences, creating an infection reservoir when the main salmonid hosts are rare or temporarily missing.  相似文献

Genome sizes (nuclear DNA contents) from 200 individuals representing 20 species of North American cyprinid fishes (minnows) were examined spectrophotometrically. The distributions of DNA values of individuals within populations of the 20 species were essentially continuous and normal; the distribution of DNA values among species was continuous and overlapping. These observations suggest that changes in DNA quantity in cyprinids are small in amount, involve both gains and losses of DNA, and are cumulative and independent in effect. Significant heterogeneity in mean genome size occurs both between individuals within populations of species and among species. The former averages maximally around 6% of the cyprinid genome and is nearly the same as the amount of DNA theoretically needed for the entire cyprinid structural gene component. The majority of the DNA content variation among the 20 species is distributed above the level of individuals within populations. Comparisons of average genome size difference or distance between individuals drawn from different levels of taxonomic organization indicate that considerably greater divergence in genome size has occurred in the extremely speciose cyprinid genus Notropis as compared with other North American cyprinid genera. This may suggest that genome size change is concentrated in speciation episodes. Finally, no associations were found between interspecific variation in genome size and five life-history characters. This suggests that much of the variation in genome size within and among the 20 species may be phenotypically inconsequential.  相似文献

Base compositions and differential melting rate profiles of genomic DNAs from twenty species of North American cyprinid fishes were generated via thermal denaturation. Base pair composition expressed as % GC values ranged among the twenty species from 36.1–41.3%. This range is considerably broader than that observed at comparable taxonomic levels in other vertebrate groups. Both the range and average difference in base pair composition between species in the diverse and rapidly evolving genus Notropis were considerably greater than those between species in other North American cyprinid genera. This may indicate that genomic changes at the level of base pair composition are frequent and possibly important events in cyprinid evolution. Compositional heterogeneity and asymmetry values among the twenty species were uniform and low, respectively, suggesting that most of the species lacked DNA components in their genomes which differed substantially from their main-band DNAs in base pair composition. The melting rate profiles revealed a prominent and distinct heavy or GC-rich DNA component in the genomes of three species belonging to the subgenus Cyprinella of Notropis. These and other data suggest that the heavy melting component may reflect a large, comparatively GC-rich family of highly repeated or satellite DNA sequences common to all three genomes.  相似文献

Infection of certain species of cyprinid fish with the plerocercoid larva of the cestode Ligula intestinalis is accompanied by a host tissue response.
The tissue reaction is evident in roach Rutilus rutilus as young as three months. An initial cellular infiltration is followed by the laying down of sheets of connective tissue. A case of calcification is described in a single infected rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus .  相似文献

Marteilia refringens is recognized as one of the most significant pathogens of bivalve molluscs. The nucleotide sequence of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene of Marteilia refringens is used to elucidate the phylogenetic position of the phylum Paramyxea. Genomic DNA was extracted from sporangia of Marteilia, purified from infected blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, and flat oysters, Ostrea edulis. The sequences obtained from Marteilia species purified from both oysters and mussels were identical. The sequence identity was confirmed by in situ hybridization using a DNA probe targeted to a variable region of the ribosomal DNA. The small subunit ribosomal RNA gene sequence of M. refringens is very different from all known sequences of eukaryotic organisms, including those of myxosporeans and haplosporeans. Therefore, the phylum Paramyxea should continue to be recognized as an independent eukaryotic phylum.  相似文献

Three measures (gape, tip and tooth row) of pharyngeal bones from 13 Eurasian cyprinid fish species caught in north-eastern Germany were used to establish species specific bone measurelength relationships for reconstruction of prey fish length. Left and right bones were symmetrical in the case of gape, tip and length of tooth row in 69, 46 and 8%, respectively. Gape and tip showed significantly lower maximum values of relative error than the tooth row measure. A comparison of bone measures established for roach Rutilus rutilus (L.) and bream Abramis brama (L.) from north-eastern and from southern Germany showed significant differences. Left and right bone measure-length relationships are not generally identical. Gape and tip measures allow more accurate back-calculation of length than tooth row measures and locality specific relationships should be established.  相似文献

Predators may induce changes in prey feeding that indirectly influence both the impact of prey on resource abundances and their interactions with other species in their community. We evaluated whether clearance and excretion (faeces plus pseudofaeces) of phytoplankton by zebra mussels were affected by the presence of predatory cues from roach, Rutilus rutilus, and signal crayfish, Pasifastacus leniusculus . We found that non-lethal effects of predators can alter zebra mussel clearance rate and thus the impact of zebra mussels on phytoplankton. Risk cues released by both predators had similar negative effects on clearance rate of zebra mussels and cascading positive indirect effects on phytoplankton resources. Predation risk had a stronger effect on zebra mussels' clearance rate of cyanobacteria and diatoms than cryptophytes and chrysophytes. The presence of predators did not significantly affect the rate at which zebra mussels expelled and excreted phytoplankton, although there was a tendency for more chlorophyll to be expelled and excreted in the presence of predators. Our results contribute to the growing evidence that predators indirectly affect resource dynamics and food web structure through their non-lethal effects on consumers. Our results suggest that exotic species such as zebra mussels can show behavioural responses to both native (e.g. roach) and exotic (e.g. crayfish) predators.  相似文献

The Jordan reservoir, Czechoslovakia, was constructed in 1492 and the last full drainage and fish removal was in 1830. In this 'mature' fish community of 20 species (plus three hybrids), the roach, Rutilus rutilus (L.) (1446 fish ha–1) and beam, Abramis brama (L.) (1074 fish ha–1) dominated the fish stock (total of all species = 3628 fish ha–1). Predatory species made a small contribution to the total (maximum 7.7%, obligatory predators 2%). The contribution (12%) by perch, Perca fluviatilis L., was also low, and its numbers in successive age-groups showed a steady decrease. The high variability and time-synchronization in the year-class strengths of the principal cyprinid species may indicate unstable environmental conditions or intra-community cycles. The growth rates of non-predatory species were low. There was a high fishing rate on predatory species but there was little impact by fishery management on the whole 'mature' community. Intensive eutrophication from both communal waters and agriculture probably caused the high biomass level (all species) and the low abundance of zander, Stizostedion lucioperca (L.).  相似文献

The shell morphology of zebra mussels, Dreissena polymorpha, was analyzed to determine if alterations in shell shape and asymmetry between valves were related to its infection status, i.e. infected or not by microparasites like ciliates Ophryoglena spp. or intracellular bacteria Rickettsiales-like organisms (RLOs), and by macroparasites like trematodes Phyllodistomum folium and Bucephalus polymorphus. For microparasites, two groups of mussels were observed depending on shell measurements. Mussels with the more concave shells were the most parasitized by ciliates. This could be more a consequence than a cause and we hypothesized that a modification of the water flow through the mantle cavity could promote the infection with a ciliate. There were more RLOs present in the most symmetrical individuals. A potential explanation involved a canalization of the left-right asymmetry as a by-product of the parasite infection. Trematode infections were associated with different responses in valve width. Females infected by P. folium displayed significantly higher symmetry in valve width compared with non-infected congeners, whereas the infection involved an opposite pattern in males. B. polymorphus was also linked to a decrease in valve width asymmetry. This study suggested that a relationship exists between parasitism and shell morphology through the physiological condition of host zebra mussels.  相似文献

Most freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionoida) require a host, usually a fish, to complete their life cycle. Most species of mussels show adaptations that increase the chances of glochidia larvae contacting a host. We investigated the evolutionary relationships of the freshwater mussel tribe Lampsilini including 49 of the approximately 100 extant species including 21 of the 24 recognized genera. Mitochondrial DNA sequence data (COI, 16S, and ND1) were used to create a molecular phylogeny for these species. Parsimony and Bayesian likelihood topologies revealed that the use of an active lure arose early in the evolution of the Lampsiline mussels. The mantle flap lure appears to have been the first to evolve with other lure types being derived from this condition. Apparently, lures were lost independently in several clades. Hypotheses are discussed as to how some of these lure strategies may have evolved in response to host fish prey preferences.  相似文献

The structure of gyrodactylid assemblages in individual fishes of two species of cyprinid was determined. A total of 100 specimens of minnow, Phoxinus phoxinus, and 137 specimens of roach, Rutilus rutilus, were investigated for presence of gyrodactylids. Host specificity, specialists vs. generalists, was noted in each host fish. A nested pattern was recorded in parasite assemblages of minnow, the host with a dominant number of specialist gyrodactylids. A non-nested pattern was observed in parasite assemblages of roach, the host with a dominant number of generalist gyrodactylids. The host specificity appears to be a meaningful factor that determines the pattern of gyrodactylid assemblages of both fish hosts.  相似文献

A molecular phylogeny is presented for marine mussels of the genus Perna, based on nuclear (ITS1,ITS2) and mitochondrial (COI) DNA sequence data. The three generally recognised species (Perna viridis, Perna perna and Perna canaliculus) and one putative species (Perna picta) were each sampled from several locations within their known geographic distributions. A range of phylogenetic analyses was used to investigate the current taxonomic assignments, evolutionary relationships and the biogeographical history of the genus. The different analyses produced similar, well supported topologies and verified the monophyly of the genus with respect to five mytilid outgroup species. P. perna (Atlantic), P. viridis (Indo-West Pacific), and P. canaliculus (New Zealand) each formed distinct clades, confirming their specific status. Putative P. picta from North Africa clustered within the P. perna clade and is not regarded as a separate species. P. perna and P. canaliculus were the most closely related of the three species. Possible biogeographic explanations for the present species distributions are evaluated.  相似文献

Deep-sea mussels of the genus Bathymodiolus (Bivalvia: Mytilidae) harbor symbiotic bacteria in their gills and are among the dominant invertebrate species at cold seeps and hydrothermal vents. An undescribed Bathymodiolus species was collected at a depth of 3,150 m in a newly discovered cold seep area on the southeast Atlantic margin, close to the Zaire channel. Transmission electron microscopy, comparative 16S rRNA analysis, and fluorescence in situ hybridization indicated that this Bathymodiolus sp. lives in a dual symbiosis with sulfide- and methane-oxidizing bacteria. A distinct distribution pattern of the symbiotic bacteria in the gill epithelium was observed, with the thiotrophic symbiont dominating the apical region and the methanotrophic symbiont more abundant in the basal region of the bacteriocytes. No variations in this distribution pattern or in the relative abundances of the two symbionts were observed in mussels collected from three different mussel beds with methane concentrations ranging from 0.7 to 33.7 microM. The 16S rRNA sequence of the methanotrophic symbiont is most closely related to those of known methanotrophic symbionts from other bathymodiolid mussels. Surprisingly, the thiotrophic Bathymodiolus sp. 16S rRNA sequence does not fall into the monophyletic group of sequences from thiotrophic symbionts of all other Bathymodiolus hosts. While these mussel species all come from vents, this study describes the first thiotrophic sequence from a seep mussel and shows that it is most closely related (99% sequence identity) to an environmental clone sequence obtained from a hydrothermal plume near Japan.  相似文献

The infection nature of Clonorchis sinensis metacercariae (CsMc) in freshwater fish hosts is closely related to the transmission of human clonorchiasis. This article reviewed the infection characteristics of CsMc in freshwater fish in the Republic of Korea (Korea). The status of CsMc infection was examined in a total of 17,792 cyprinid fish of 49 species in 9 water systems, which included Hantan-/Imjin-gang, Han-gang, Geum-gang, Mangyeong-gang, Yeongsan-gang, Tamjin-gang, Seomjin-gang, Nakdong-gang, and streams in the east coastal areas from 2010 to 2020. The infection status of CsMc was examined according to cyprinid fish species and water systems, after which analyzed by endemicity and susceptibility index. The high endemicity was shown in the cyprinid fish from 3 regions (6.1%) in the upper reaches of Nakdong-gang, such as Banbyeon-cheon (stream), Yongjeon-cheon, and Wi-cheon. The moderate levels were observed in fishes from 8 regions (16.3%), and low endemicity was shown in fishes from 20 regions (40.8%). No CsMc were detected in fish from 18 regions (36.7%). The susceptibility of CsMc in index fish, Puntungia herzi, was found to be a reliable index without examination of other fish species. CsMc infection rates were closely related to subfamily groups in the cyprinid fish hosts in a highly endemic area. In Korea, a total of 58 fish species in 10 families has been listed as the second intermediate hosts for C. sinensis. This review provides several novel features of CsMc infection and clarifies the species of second intermediate freshwater fish host in Korea.  相似文献
