Eucalyptus nitens plantations are generally established for pulpwood production but an increasing area is being managed for solid wood. Genetic variation in, and correlations among, three Kraft pulpwood traits (diameter at breast height, basic density and near-infrared-predicted cellulose content) and three 12-mm wood-core shrinkage traits (recoverable collapse, net shrinkage and gross shrinkage) were examined, utilising data from two 9-year-old first-generation progeny trials in Tasmania. These trials contained approximately 400 open-pollinated families (over 100 of which were sampled for wood properties) representing three central-Victorian E. nitens races. Significant genetic variation at the race and/or within-race level was identified in all traits. Within races, relative levels of additive genetic variation were higher for shrinkage traits, although narrow-sense heritabilities were lower and the expression of genetic variation less stable across sites than for other wood property traits. Heterogeneous intertrait genetic correlations were identified across sites between growth and some wood property traits. However, where significant, genetic correlations indicated that within-race selection for growth would adversely affect core basic density and all core shrinkage traits. Furthermore, results based on cores suggested that within-race selection for higher basic density would favourably impact on cellulose content and collapse but selection for either higher basic density or cellulose content would adversely affect net shrinkage. Most within-race genetic variation in gross shrinkage appeared to be due to genetic variation in collapse. The implications of these results for sawn timber breeding will depend on the strength of genetic correlations between core traits and rotation-age objective traits and objective trait economic weights.  相似文献

Genetic variation and co-variation among the key pulpwood selection traits for Eucalyptus globulus were estimated for a range of sites in Portugal, with the aim of improving genetic parameters used to predict breeding values and correlated response to selection. The trials comprised clonally replicated full-sib families (eight trials) and unrelated clones (17 trials), and exhibited varying levels of pedigree connectivity. The traits studied were stem diameter at breast height, Pilodyn penetration (an indirect measure of wood basic density) and near infrared reflectance predicted pulp yield. Univariate and multivariate linear mixed models were fitted within and across sites, and estimates of additive genetic, total genetic, environmental and phenotypic variances and covariances were obtained. All traits studied exhibited significant levels of additive genetic variation. The average estimated within-site narrow-sense heritability was 0.19 ± 0.03 for diameter and 0.29 ± 0.03 for Pilodyn penetration, and the pooled estimate for predicted pulp yield was 0.42 ± 0.14. When they could be tested, dominance and epistatic effects were generally not statistically significant, although broad-sense heritability estimates were slightly higher than narrow-sense heritability estimates. Averaged across trials, positive additive (0.64 ± 0.08), total genetic (0.58 ± 0.04), environmental (0.38 ± 0.03) and phenotypic (0.43 ± 0.02) correlation estimates were consistently obtained between diameter and Pilodyn penetration. This data argues for at least some form of pleiotropic relationship between these two traits and that selection for fast growth will adversely affect wood density in this population. Estimates of the across-site genetic correlations for diameter and Pilodyn penetration were high, indicating that the genotype by environment interaction is low across the range of sites tested. This result supports the use of single aggregated selection criteria for growth and wood density across planting environments in Portugal, as opposed to having to select for performance in different environments.  相似文献

Summary Successive annual height increments (AHIs) are considered to be elements of a time series. Empirical data in Maritime pine (Pinus pinaster Ait.) show that genetic correlations between successive AHIs (serial correlation) decrease when the lag between corresponding growing seasons increases. When separated by more than 13 years AHIs are no longer genetically correlated. It is shown that age-age correlations between total heights depend on three components: the serial correlation structure between AHIs, the genetic coefficient of variation of AHIs, and the phenotypic growth curve of AHIs. Age-age correlations are computed in various combinations of the three components. Serial correlation structure and the genetic coefficient of variation had the more pronounced effect on age-age correlations. The genetic correlation between height at age 10 and height at age 50 varies between 0.764 and -0.136 according to the different combinations. Results obtained by simulations are comparable to those issued from previous empirical methods. mplications on early selection procedures and on optimal selection age are discussed.  相似文献

The fungal pathogen Quambalaria pitereka can cause significant damage to spotted gum (Corymbia sp.) plantations in Australia. A series of seven progeny trials, involving seed from a range-wide collection from 527 individuals within 25 native populations of Corymbia citriodora sub-species variegata, were assessed for height growth and damage from Quambalaria around 1 year after planting. Infection at this young age has been found to detrimentally impact growth, form, and wood quality for many years. Genetic variance was found to be significant at both the provenance and family level. However, selection of families within provenances should lead to greater levels of genetic gain than what can be realized from selecting among provenances as estimates of additive genetic variance were consistently greater than estimates of variance among populations. Strong relationships between height and Quambalaria shoot blight (QSB) damage assessments in these trials were evidenced by very high genetic correlations between the traits; therefore, selection for any of these traits could be used to identify more productive and QSB-tolerant populations. While both provenances and families were found to interact with the trial environments at a similar level across traits, genetic correlations indicated that rankings for growth were be less stable than rankings for QSB tolerance across environments. Genetic parameter estimates derived from general and generalized linear models were very similar and either analytical method could be used to evaluate fungal damage.  相似文献

Summary Growth traits, stem form and branch characteristics in three series of well-replicated trials, comprising open-pollinated families of Pinus elliottii Engelmann, were analysed to investigate whether the absolute value of the component of variance for family effect and its relative value (which is equivalent to one-quarter of heritability on individual values) were related, with trial averages of the traits studied taken as productivity indices of the sites tested. The first series, called the foreign selection series, consisted of four trials comprising open-pollinated families from single clones from a Florida seed orchard and from selected trees in Queensland, Australia. Two trials were established in the eastern Transvaal, at Tweefontein and Frankfort State Forests (SF), and two in Zululand, at Dukuduku and KwaMbonambi SF. The second series, called the Zululand selection series, consisted of open-pollinated families from single trees selected in Zululand that were compared in three trials: in the eastern Transvaal at Wilgeboom SF, in Zululand at Dukuduku SF and in the southern Cape at Lottering SF. The third series, called the South African selection series, consisted of open-pollinated families from single trees selected in the different forest areas of South Africa and compared in four trials: two trials in the eastern Transvaal at Tweefontein and Mariti SF and two in the Natal province at Dukuduku and Weza SF. Some positive and linear relationships between absolute sizes of the variance component for family and trial average for all traits studied, except stem form, were discernible for the foreign selections and for the Zululand selections. The South African selections presented a more erratic pattern of variation. However, when the origin of the genetic material was disregarded, the positive trends were undeniable. Curvilinear relationships between relative values and site averages were discernible, when the origin of the genetic material was disregarded. Further research is needed in order to confirm the suggested effect of site on genetic expressivity of open-pollinated families of slash pine grown in South Africa.  相似文献

Heterozygosity and hybrid performance in larch   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Random Amplified Polymorphic DNAs (RAPD) were used for estimating genetic distances between 12 European larches (Larix decidua) and 12 Japanese larches (L. kaempferi) that were the parents in a factorial mating design. One hundred and eleven fragments were used for establishing genetic distances based on Jaccard's coefficient between parents. Thirteen fragments differentiated the larch species. The genetic distance between individuals of the same species (D J =0.39 in the Japanese larch and 0.45 in the European larch) was lower than the genetic distance between species (D J =0.72). A UPGMA dendrogram based on genetic distances clearly clustered each larch species, confirming the speciation at a molecular level. Correlations between genetic distances of the parents and performances of the hybrid families were established for various quantitative traits. Significant values were found for growth characters and branch insertion angle, which suggested an effect of general heterozygosity level on hybrid traits. These correlations also evolved with tree age: the maximal correlation was noticed on 6-year-old trees for height. The lack of correlation between parental genetic distances and hybrid performances for the other quantitative traits suggested that these characters were controlled by fewer genes. The results of this study show that crosses between genetically distant parents produce hybrids with excellent growth performances; this represents a potential selection criterion of the genitors.  相似文献

Growth and form traits from a series of three provenance trials of Pinus radiata D. Don planted in New Zealand and Australia were analysed at age 9 years from planting. The trials included selections from three mainland California natural populations—A?o Nuevo, Monterey and Cambria. Monterey and Cambria performed better than A?o Nuevo at two New Zealand sites, but Monterey and A?o Nuevo were almost identical in growth, whereas Cambria grew less vigorously at the Australian site. We detected significant provenance differences for diameter at breast height (DBH) growth and stem straightness across countries (p < 0.001). Estimated heritability for DBH ranged from 0.19 to 0.26 within sites, while heritability estimates for stem straightness and branching frequency ranged from 0.10 to 0.24. Estimated type B genetic correlations for DBH were always higher between the two trials in New Zealand trials than between pairs of trials in New Zealand and the Australian site. The genetic coefficient of variation (CVA) for DBH was around 8–10% compared to ca. 5% for the current breeding population. These results suggested that there is appreciable genetic variation in the native populations, and infusion of these materials would increase the genetic variation in current breeding populations. Ten unrelated parents ranked above control seedlots from the older open-pollinated seed orchard stock for DBH growth and would be potential candidates for infusion. The promising performance of the Cambria material is an important result because the genetic base of the present Australian and New Zealand plantations is principally derived from A?o Nuevo and Monterey.  相似文献

Unfavorable genetic correlations between growth and wood quality traits are one of the biggest challenges in advanced conifer breeding programs. To examine and deal with such correlation, increment cores were sampled at breast height from 5,618 trees in 524 open-pollinated families in two 21-year-old Norway spruce progeny trials in southern Sweden, and age trends of genetic variation, genetic correlation, and efficiency of selection were investigated. Wood quality traits were measured on 12-mm increment cores using SilviScan. Heritability was moderate (~0.4–0.5) for wood density and modulus of elasticity (MOE) but low (~0.2) for microfibril angle (MFA). Different age trends were observed for wood density, MFA, and MOE, and the lower heritability of MFA relative to wood density and MOE in Norway spruce contrasted with general trends of the three wood quality traits in pine. Genetic correlations among growth, wood density, MFA, and MOE increased to a considerably high value from pith to bark with unfavorable genetic correlations (?0.6 between growth and wood density, ?0.74 between growth and MOE). Age–age genetic correlations reached 0.9 after ring 4 for diameter at breast height (DBH), wood density, MFA, and MOE traits. Early selections at ring 10 for diameter and at ring 6 or 7 for wood quality traits had similar effectiveness as selection conducted at reference ring 15. Selection based on diameter alone produced 19.0 % genetic gain in diameter but resulted in 4.8 % decrease in wood density, 9.4 % decrease in MOE, and 8.0 % increase in MFA. Index selection with a restriction of no change in wood density, MOE, and MFA, respectively, produced relatively lower genetic gains in diameter (16.4, 12.2, and 14.1 %, respectively), indicating such index selection could be implemented to maintain current wood density. Index selection using economic weights is, however, recommended for maximum economic efficiency.  相似文献

Genetic variability in 10 natural Tunisian populations of Medicago laciniata were analysed using 19 quantitative traits and 12 polymorphic microsatellite loci. A large degree of genetic variability within-populations and among-populations was detected for both quantitative characters and molecular markers. High genetic differentiation among populations for quantitative traits was seen, with Q ST = 0.47, and F ST = 0.47 for microsatellite markers. Several quantitative traits displayed no statistical difference in the levels of Q ST and F ST . Further, significant correlations between quantitative traits and eco-geographical factors suggest that divergence in the traits among populations may track environmental differences. There was no significant correlation between genetic variability at quantitative traits and microsatellite markers within populations. The site-of-origin of eco-geographical factors explain between 18.13% and 23.40% of genetic variance among populations at quantitative traits and microsatellite markers, respectively. The environmental factors that most influence variation in measured traits among populations are assimilated phosphorus (P205) and mean annual rainfall, followed by climate and soil texture, altitude and organic matter. Significant associations between eco-geographical factors and gene diversity, H e , were established in five-microsatellite loci suggesting that these simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are not necessarily biologically neutral.  相似文献

Interspecific hybrids of Populus species are known for their superior growth. In this study, we examined the effect of the genetic background and contrasting environmental conditions on growth and searched for quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting growth traits. To this end, two hybrid poplar families resulting from controlled crosses, Populus deltoides ‘S9-2’ × P. nigra ‘Ghoy’ (D × N, 180 F1) and P. deltoides ‘S9-2’ × P. trichocarpa ‘V24’ (D × T, 182 F1), were grown at two contrasting sites, Northern Italy and Central France. At the end of the second growing season, tree dimensions (stem height, circumference, and volume) were assessed. The performances of both families significantly differed within and between sites. Tree volume was significantly larger at the Italian site as compared to the French site. Genotype by environment interactions were significant but low for both families and for all growth traits. Tight correlations among the individual growth traits indicated that there may be a common genetic mechanism with pleiotropic effects on these growth traits. In line with previous studies, linkage groups I, VII, IX, X, XVI, XVII, and XIX appeared to have genomic regions with the largest effects on growth traits. This study revealed that (1) both families have high potential for selection of superior poplar hybrids due to the pronounced heterosis (hybrid vigor) and the large genetic variability in terms of growth and (2) the choice of site is crucial for poplar cultivation. Dillen and Storme contributed equally to the work. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

Teak (Tectona grandis Linn. f.) has been planted extensively in the tropics for its highly valued timber. We analysed data from a 3.5-year-old teak progeny test with clonal replication located in northern Australia. Additive and non-additive genetic variances were estimated for commercially important traits. Trees originating from seedlings were on average 2% taller and 4% straighter than those of the same genotype originating from cuttings. Non-additive genetic variance represented 35–50% of total genetic variance for growth traits and 63% of total genetic variance for incidence of flowering. Narrow-sense heritability was 0.22 for diameter, 0.18 for height and volume, 0.07 for stem straightness, 0.05 for insect defoliation, 0.03 for epicormic sprouts and 0.30 for incidence of flowering (estimated on an assumed underlying continuous scale). Broad-sense heritability was 0.37 for diameter, 0.28 for height, 0.35 for volume, 0.12 for stem straightness, 0.06 for insect defoliation, 0.12 for epicormic sprouts and 0.71 for incidence of flowering. Positive correlations were found between tree volume and flowering and between tree volume and stem straightness. The presence of sizeable non-additive variance supports the selection and deployment of clones to capture the full extent of genetic variation in commercially important traits.  相似文献

Growth and form traits data were obtained from eight provenance trials of radiata pine (Pinus radiata D. Don) planted across the radiata pine plantation estate in southeast Australia. The genetic pool included 466 open-pollinated families collected from A?o Nuevo, Monterey and Cambria provenances on the Californian mainland coast in the USA and from Guadalupe and Cedros islands off the coast of Baja California in Mexico. Early survival of all provenances was around 90%, except for Cedros (<60%). Monterey and A?o Nuevo were the best performers at almost all sites. However, good growth performance of Cambria and good stem straightness of Guadalupe on some sites are important results, because the genetic base of the present Australian plantations evidently originated from only Monterey and A?o Nuevo. The average estimated single-site heritability for diameter at breast height was 0.22 and 0.32 at juvenile and mature ages, respectively. Heritability estimates for stem straightness and branching ranged from 0.23 to 0.55. Genetic correlation estimates between diameter at breast height (DBH) at juvenile and rotation ages were all >0.80. Estimates of between-site genetic and provenance correlations for DBH were often low, indicating high genotype by environment interaction across trials, consistent with previous Australian studies. However, there was minimal G × E among trials on high-altitude high-rainfall sites and among trials on low-altitude, low-rainfall sites.

We have investigated the relationship between phenotypic and genetic correlations among a large number of quantitative traits (36) in three different environments in order to determine their degree of disparity and whether phenotypic correlations could be substituted for their genetic counterparts whatever the environment. We also studied the influence of the environment on genetic and phenotypic correlations. Twenty accessions (full-sib families) ofMedicago luPulina were grown in three environments. In two of these two levels of environmental stress were generated by harvesting plants at flowering and by growing plants in competition with barley, respectively. A third environment, with no treatment, was used as a control with no stress. Average values of pod and shoot weight indicate that competition induces the highest level of stress. The genetic and phenotypic correlations among the 36 traits were compared. Significant phenotypic correlations were obtained easily, while there was no genetic variation for 1 or the 2 characters being correlated. The large positive correlation between the genetic and phenotypic correlation matrices indicated a good proportionality between genetic and phenotypic correlations matrices but not their similarity. In a given environment, when only those traits with a significant genetic variance were taken into account, there were still differences between genetic and phenotypic correlations, even when levels of significance for phenotypic correlations were lowered. Consequently, it is dangerous to substitute phenotypic correlations for genetic correlations. The number of traits that showed genetic variability increased with increasing environmental stress, consequently the number of significant genetic correlations also increased with increasing environmental stress. In contrast, the number of significant phenotypic correlations was not influnced by the environment. The structures of both phenotypic and genetic matrices, however, depended on the environment, and not in the same way for both matrices.  相似文献

Seven innate immune parameters were investigated in 64 full-sib families (the offspring of 64 sires and 45 dams) from two year-classes of farmed rohu carp (Labeo rohita). Survival rates were also available from Aeromonas hydrophila infection (aeromoniasis) recorded in controlled challenge tests on a different sample of individuals from the same families. Due to strong confounding between the animal additive genetic effect and the family effects (common environmental + non-additive genetic), reliable additive (co)variance components and hence heritabilities and genetic correlations could not be obtained for the investigated parameters. Therefore, estimates of the association of challenge test survival with the studied immune parameters were obtained as product moment correlations between family least square means. These correlations revealed statistically significant (p < 0.05) negative correlations of survival with bacterial agglutination titre (−0.48), serum haemolysin titre (−0.29) and haemagglutination titre (−0.34); and significant positive correlation with ceruloplasmin level (0.51). The correlations of survival to aeromoniasis with myeloperoxidase activity, superoxide production and lysozyme activity were found to be not significantly different from zero (p > 0.05). Assuming that the negatively correlated candidate traits are not favourable as indirect selection criteria, the results suggest that ceruloplasmin level could potentially be a marker for resistance to aeromoniasis in rohu. The use of this immune parameter as an indirect selection criterion for increased resistance to aeromoniasis in rohu will, however, require that the parameter shows significant additive genetic variation and a significant genetic correlation with survival. Further studies are therefore needed to obtain a reliable heritability estimate for ceruloplasmin and its genetic correlation with survival from aeromoniasis.  相似文献

Summary Three species of Phlox (Polemoniaceae) were grown in 6 greenhouse treatments. A variety of traits were recorded and the correlations among them were computed for each treatment. The phenotypic correlations between characters are significantly altered when plants are grown under different environmental conditions. These changes in correlation structure result from the differential phenotypic plasticity of traits. Partial correlations between flower production and other traits are also environment-dependent. Such changes can alter the intensity of, and possibly the response to, selection on traits correlated with fitness in natural plant populations.  相似文献

Total height, diameter, index volume, stem straightness, apical dominance, and survival were assessed at 8 years from seed in an open-pollinated progeny test of 36 families of European chestnut (Castanea sativa Miller) established at two sites in the Atlantic area of Galicia, Spain. Iterative spatial analysis was applied to eliminate the effect of the spatial dependence in the original data and to estimate accurately genetic parameters for evaluating the potential for selection of the measured trees. Spatial analysis was very beneficial for growth traits and survival, but less so if at all for form traits. Estimated individual heritabilities ranged from moderate to high for growth traits ([^(h)]i2 = 0.29 - 0.42 \widehat{h}_i^2 = 0.29 - 0.42 ) and stem straightness ([^(h)]i2 = 0.24 - 0.42 \widehat{h}_i^2 = 0.{24} - 0.{42} ). High coefficients of additive genetic variance were obtained for volume ( [^(\textC)]\textV\textA = 36.5 - 41.5% \widehat{\text{C}}{{\text{V}}_{\text{A}}} = {36}.{5} - {41}.{5}\% ) and straightness ( [^(\textC)]\textV\textA = 44.26 - 53.84% \widehat{\text{C}}{{\text{V}}_{\text{A}}} = {44}.{26} - {53}.{84}\% ). Phenotypic and estimated genetic correlations between growth traits were very high, and correlations between sites indicated that there was no important family × site interaction. No adverse correlations between traits were evident. The results indicate the ample potential for selection in the current progeny trial, where responses to within-family and combined selection for growth traits may be high. Accordingly, three selection scenarios were addressed with the aim to initiate the selection of individuals for implementing the Forest Breeding Plan of Galicia for European chestnut.  相似文献

To better understand the genetic control of growth traits (tree height, dbh, and stem volume) and wood properties (basic wood density and fiber length) in triploid hybrid clones of Populus tomentosa, genetic relationships among selected wood properties with growth traits were examined in 5-year-old clonal field trials located in Yanzhou, Gaotang, and Xiangfen, northern China. In total, 180 trees from 10 clones were sampled from the three sites. The site had a moderate effect on basic wood density (BWD), stem wood dry weight (DWT), and tree growth and had a highly significant effect on fiber length (FL) (P?<?0.001). Clonal effects were also significant (P?<?0.05) for all studied traits (except for diameter at breast height (DBH) and stem volume (SV)). Clone × site interaction was significant for all the studied traits except for FL. The estimated repeatability of clonal means for FL (0.91) was higher than for BWD (0.71), DWT (0.62), tree height (0.62), DBH (0.61), and SV (0.55). Intersite genetic correlation estimates indicated that wood properties were more stable than growth traits. Phenotypic correlation estimates between SV and BWD ranged from ?0.29 to ?0.10.  相似文献
