In order to study the ability of fish to perceive and distinguish textures visually, bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) were trained to discriminate between pairs of artificial texture patterns. Random dot patterns with different statistical dot distributions were presented to the fish as artificial texture patterns. The results indicate that bluegills have the ability to discriminate many pairs of patterns with different statistical features of dot distributions which have different appearance in texture. This suggests that texture could be one of the important visual features bluegill sunfish recognize and utilize.  相似文献

Due to the limited computational capacity of visual systems and the limited capacity to perform several mental operations at once, animals only select a small proportion of the stimuli available at any one time. It remains to be clarified how this process is related to the spatio-temporal dynamics of cell assemblies in the brain. By employing the flight simulator, selective visual attention behavior is studied in Drosophila. It has been found that for the visual objects presented, the tethered fruitflies display various attention patterns. Specifically, the learning memory mutants dunce and amnesiac possess attention patterns totally different from that of the wild-type fly. To explain these results from the viewpoint of dynamic cell assemblies, a neural network has been developed in which a possible link between the activity of cell assemblies, encoding of sensory information, and selective attention in Drosophila is proposed. Perception is generally thought to occur centrally in the nervous system as a result of information which flows unidirectionally through a hierarchy of sensory processors. Such a view is in conflict with recent experimental evidence for a centrifugal control capable of enhancing particular features of the sensory input. Certain phenomena in human perception, resembling order-disorder transitions in physics, also suggest the existence of a positive feedback mechanism in the sensory pathway. A mechanism of perception is proposed in which unstructured feedback can accomplish the desired feature-specific enhancement of the input. The principle used here — the Alopex principle — is one that was devised in this laboratory for the experimental determination of visual receptive fields. The biological requirements for the operation of the principle are discussed, and a possible site in the thalamic relay nuclei is suggested.  相似文献

The Genetic Code appears to be a non-random triplet code in which both the position of a nucleotide within a codon, as well as its physicochemical nature, contribute to the identity of the expressed amino acid. The non-randomness of the code is manifested in apparent patterns in the mapping from codon to amino acid; some of the patterns seem quite clear, while other more subtle patterns are less obvious or certain. Discussion in the literature has been largely qualitative in nature. In this study, we employ evolution similarity data, widely employed in the field of bioinformatics, to explore the patterns relating nucleotide features to amino acids. The results support a hierarchical order based on position and physicochemical features proposed by Jimenez-Montaño et al., [“The Hypercube Structure of the Genetic Code Explains Conservative and Non-Conservative Amino Acid Substitutions in vivo and in vitroBiosystems (1996) 39, pp. 117–125]. The method also provides a quantitative approach to testing the importance of other putative patterns.  相似文献

Variations in visual field topography among birds have been interpreted as adaptations to the specific perceptual challenges posed by the species’ foraging ecology. To test this hypothesis we determined visual field topography in four bird species which have different foraging ecologies but are from the same family: Puna Ibis Plegadis ridgwayi (probes for prey in the soft substrates of marsh habitats), Northern Bald Ibis Geronticus eremita (surface pecks for prey in dry terrestrial habitats), African Spoonbill Platalea alba and Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia (bill‐sweeps for prey in shallow turbid waters). All four species employ tactile cues provided by bill‐tip organs for prey detection. We predicted that the visual fields of these species would show general features similar to those found in other birds whose foraging is guided by tactile cues from the bill (i.e. bill falling outside the frontal binocular field and comprehensive visual coverage of the celestial hemisphere). However, the visual fields of all four species showed general features characteristic of birds that take food directly in the bill under visual guidance (i.e. a narrow and vertically long binocular field in which the projection of the bill tip is approximately central and with a blind area above and behind the head). Visual fields of the two spoonbills were very similar but differed from those of the ibises, which also differed between themselves. In the spoonbills, there was a blind area below the bill produced by the enlarged spatulate bill tip. We discuss how these differences in visual fields are related to the perceptual challenges of these birds’ different foraging ecologies, including the detection, identification and ingestion of prey. In particular we suggest that all species need to see binocularly around the bill and between the opened mandibles for the identification of caught prey items and its transport to the back of the mouth. Our findings support the hypothesis that sensory challenges associated with differences in foraging ecology, rather than shared ancestry or the control of locomotion, are the main determinants of variation in visual field topography in birds.  相似文献

This study compared competition capacity and dominance relations between arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). Experiments were carried out in semi-natural earthen floor enclosures using farm-bred colour types of both species (blue fox and silver fox) as subjects. Results of the dominance scoring and open field behaviour after weaning in August-September showed that blue foxes dominated over silver foxes. Thereafter, the situation gradually became reversed and silver foxes were dominant during the breeding and whelping seasons. Housing both species together from weaning produced more curious animals as compared to when these species were placed in common quarters after the autumn equinox. In the case of blue foxes, the male dominated highly over all females. In silver foxes, the difference in dominance between the sexes was, however, less pronounced. The most dominant individuals in the study groups were typically among the heaviest. Breedings and whelpings succeeded better in silver than in blue foxes. However, none of litters born survived more than one week. The present results support the conclusion that when both fox species are housed together, Vulpus vulpus tends to dominate over Alopex lagopus. Two models for visual pattern recognition are described; the one based on application of internal compensatory transformations to pattern representations, the other based on encoding of patterns in terms of local features and spatial relations between these local features. These transformation and relational-structure models are each endowed with the same experimentally observed invariance properties, which include independence to pattern translation and pattern jitter, and, depending on the particular versions of the models, independence to pattern reflection and inversion (180° rotation). Each model is tested by comparing the predicted recognition performance with experimentally determined recognition performance using as stimuli random-dot patterns that were variously rotated in the plane. The level of visual recognition of such patterns is known to depend strongly on rotation angle. It is shown that the relational-structure model equipped with an invariance to pattern inversion gives responses which are in close agreement with the experimental data over all pattern rotation angles. In contrast, the transformation model equipped with the same invariances gives poor agreement to the experimental data. Some implications of these results are considered.  相似文献

The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has a sophisticated visual system and exhibits complex visual behaviors. Visual responses, vision processing and higher cognitive processes in Drosophila have been studied extensively. However, little is known about whether the retinal location of visual stimuli can affect fruit fly performance in various visual tasks. We tested the response of wild-type Berlin flies to visual stimuli at several vertical locations. Three paradigms were used in our study: visual operant conditioning, visual object fixation and optomotor response. We observed an acute zone for visual feature memorization in the upper visual field when visual patterns were presented with a black background. However, when a white background was used, the acute zone was in the lower visual field. Similar to visual feature memorization, the best locations for visual object fixation and optomotor response to a single moving stripe were in the lower visual field with a white background and the upper visual field with a black background. The preferred location for the optomotor response to moving gratings was around the equator of the visual field. Our results suggest that different visual processing pathways are involved in different visual tasks and that there is a certain degree of overlap between the pathways for visual feature memorization, visual object fixation and optomotor response.  相似文献

Statistical methods are discussed, which are used in the analysis of point patterns. Special attention has been paid to their application in ecological research. Some new procedures are presented, which seem to be better compatible with the needs of the ecologist.It is pointed out that patterns can usually be described in terms of an appropriate trend surface as well as in terms of mutual interactions. This circumstance restricts the value of the analysis of point patterns for ecological research in tracing the mechanisms which are connected with the distribution of individuals.After having discussed the current sampling designs with respect to point patterns, the, estimation of the local intensity is treated. Although the so-called distance-method has got considerable attention in this respect, it is stated that this method is not very appropriate for this purpose. For two sampling designs, it is illustrated how to estimate functions, which describe density variation in the field.Further, a procedure is proposed which estimates the covariance curve, as well as the total amount of interaction in the pattern. The relation of the statistic with the covariance curve has been pointed out. An improvement has been proposed of the well-known Greigh-Smith method, i.e. the estimation of the variance curve.The estimation procedures proposed have been illustrated by three examples from the field, i.e. dispersal patterns of barnacles, anemones and glassworts, all belonging to low structured communities. Summary Recently, a neural model of visual pattern discrimination for stimulus-specific habituation was developed, based on previous behavioral studies which demonstrated that toads exhibit a dishabituation hierarchy for different worm-like stimuli. The model suggests that visual objects are represented by temporal coding and predicts that the dishabituation hierarchy changes when the stimulus/background contrast direction is reversed or the stimulus size is varied. The behavioral experiments reported in this paper were designed to test these predictions, (1) For a pair of stimuli from the contrast reversal prediction, the experimental results validated the theory. (2) For a pair of stimuli from the size reduction prediction, the experimental results failed to validate the theory. Further experiments concerning size effects suggest that configurai visual pattern discrimination in toads exhibits size invariance. (3) Inspired by the Groves-Thompson account of habituation, we found that dishabituation by a second stimulus has a separate process from habituation to a first stimulus. For species which bear unique markings, such as natural spot patterning, field work has become increasingly more reliant on visual identification to recognize and catalog particular specimens or to monitor individuals within populations. While many species of interest exhibit characteristic markings that in principle allow individuals to be identified from photographs, scientists are often faced with the task of matching observations against databases of hundreds or thousands of images. We present a novel technique for automated identification of manta rays (Manta alfredi and Manta birostris) by means of a pattern‐matching algorithm applied to images of their ventral surface area. Automated visual identification has recently been developed for several species. However, such methods are typically limited to animals that can be photographed above water, or whose markings exhibit high contrast and appear in regular constellations. While manta rays bear natural patterning across their ventral surface, these patterns vary greatly in their size, shape, contrast, and spatial distribution. Our method is the first to have proven successful at achieving high matching accuracies on a large corpus of manta ray images taken under challenging underwater conditions. Our method is based on automated extraction and matching of keypoint features using the Scale‐Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) algorithm. In order to cope with the considerable variation in quality of underwater photographs, we also incorporate preprocessing and image enhancement steps. Furthermore, we use a novel pattern‐matching approach that results in better accuracy than the standard SIFT approach and other alternative methods. We present quantitative evaluation results on a data set of 720 images of manta rays taken under widely different conditions. We describe a novel automated pattern representation and matching method that can be used to identify individual manta rays from photographs. The method has been incorporated into a website (mantamatcher.org) which will serve as a global resource for ecological and conservation research. It will allow researchers to manage and track sightings data to establish important life‐history parameters as well as determine other ecological data such as abundance, range, movement patterns, and structure of manta ray populations across the world.  相似文献

Social preferences for specific colour patterns learned in early development, termed imprinting, may influence social and mating decisions. Imprinting has been demonstrated in both birds and fish and has been proposed to play a role in speciation. We raised wild‐type zebrafish, Danio rerio, either with individuals of the same colour pattern, an alternative colour pattern (leopard), or a closely related, unpatterned species, D. albolineatus. We also cross‐reared individual ‘leopard’D. rerio and D. albolineatus with wild‐type D. rerio. We tested the prediction that Danio would prefer to shoal with fish of the colour pattern with which they had been raised, irrespective of their own appearance. Rearing condition affected shoaling preferences between D. rerio and D. albolineatus, with individuals of both colour patterns preferring to associate with shoals of the colour pattern with which they had been raised. The more subtle distinction between the wild‐type and ‘leopard’D. rerio colour patterns did not elicit a shoaling preference. Thus, zebrafish exhibit shoaling preferences based on visual cues, the effect being stronger when patterns are more distinct. There is a strong learned component to these preferences, although the extent to which they may influence mating decisions is unclear.  相似文献

A new computerised technique has been devised for measuring the distribution of chiasmata along diplotene bivalents. The method involves the introduction into the field of view of the microscope, of a fine light spot which can be accurately manipulated along the chromosomes of each bivalent. The data recorded include (a) the positions of the chiasmata along the bivalent in terms of their relative distances from the centromere and (b) the individual bivalent and cellular chiasma frequencies. — The method has been applied to the analysis of chiasma distribution patterns in the two known species of the genus Caledia, C. species nova 1 and C. captiva and in two chromosomal races of the latter. Statistical tests indicate that within bivalents at least 40% of the comparative distribution patterns of chiasmata between races and species are significantly different. Similar comparisons between populations within races reveal only 18% significant differences. — The observed distribution patterns of chiasmata in this genus suggest that chiasma formation is sequential from centromere to telomere. — The variation in the frequency and distribution of chiasmata between races and species suggests that the interference distances between successive chiasmata are, at least partially, independent of chiasma frequency and position. — The interracial and interspecific differences in chromosome structure are correlated with changes in chiasma pattern.  相似文献

Primary visual coding can be characterized by the receptive field (RF) properties of single neurons. Subject of this paper is our search for a global,second coding step beyond the RF-concept that links related features in a visual scene. In recent models of visual coding, oscillatory activities have been proposed to constitute such linking signals. We tested the neurophysiological relevance of this hypothesis for the visual system. Single and multiple spikes as well as local field potentials were recorded simultaneously from several locations in the primary visual cortex (A17 and A18) using 7 or 19 individually advanceable fibermicroelectrodes (250 or 330 m apart).Stimulusevoked (SE)-resonances of 35–85 Hz were found in these three types of signals throughout the visual cortex when the primary coding channels were activated by their specific stimuli. Stimulus position, orientation, movement direction and velocity, ocularity and stationary flicker caused specific SE-resonances.Coherent SE-resonances were found at distant cortical positions when at least one of the primary coding properties was similar. Coherence was found1) within a vertical cortex column,2) between neighbouring hypercolumns, and3) between two different cortical areas. We assume that the coherence of SE-resonances is mediated by recurrent excitatory intra- and inter-areal connections via phase locking between assemblies that represent the linking features of the actual visual scene. Visually related activities are, thus, transiently labelled by a temporal code that signalizes their momentary association.  相似文献

The electrophoretic pattern of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) was studied in 60 intergeneric fox hybrids (Alopex lagopus × Vulpes vulpes), 33 females and 27 males. It is shown that the structural gene for G6PD, designated Gpd, is located on the X chromosome in both Arctic and silver foxes. Analysis of G6PD patterns in the erythrocytes of hybrid females demonstrated that the phenotypic expression of parental alleles at the Gpd locus varied considerably: from 1:1 to the hemizygous manifestation of an allele of either the Artic or the silver fox. The expression of the parental allels at this locus is different in the various tissues of single female hybrids. It is suggested that the variable quantitative expression of the alleles at the Gpd locus in hybrid females is related to the presence of two cell populations having in an active state either the X chromosome of the Arctic fox or that of the silver fox. It is also proposed that the size of the two cell populations is largely affected by the different relationships between cells having different activated X-chromosomes among initiator (stem) cells from which various definitive organs and tissues develop. The number of initiator cells for erythroid tissue has been calculated to be five or six.  相似文献

One of the most striking features of cave fishes is their pronounced ocular regression. They are, however, perfectly adapted since they multiply and display the behaviour patterns which are biologically important in their surroundings. It is therefore of interest to study the relative role of visual factors in the corresponding behaviour patterns in related epigean species.Other authors have previously demonstrated the dominant role of chemical stimuli in the releasing of sexual behaviour patterns in M. sphenops, of which some forms are cavernicolous. In M. velifera and M. latipinna, on the contrary, visual factors seem more important. The releasers of the aggressive behaviour patterns of these three species seem to be predominantly visual. In the present study, the importance of visual factors has been verified experimentally in M. velifera by comparing the observed behavioural differences in experimentally blinded individuals and normal controls.The results of the pre-experimental phase show that there is no difference between these two groups before blinding, neither in the frequency of the patterns, nor in their numerical values.The results of the first experimental phase confirm the importance of visual releasers in the sexual behaviour patterns of M. velifera. Thus, sexual approaches, mouth—abdomen contacts and copulation attempts are totally absent in blinded pairs. Sexual motivation however is still present since the gonopodal flexions are equally frequent in both groups. On the other hand, it seems that aggressive behaviour patterns are maintained in blinded individuals but only when the partners are very close to each other or when an actual contact has taken place.The comparison of pairs in which only one of the partners is blinded (second experimental phase), as well as results of the first phase, suggest that experimental blinding does not cause hormonal changes liable to influence the observed patterns. In addition to this, the role of the ♀ in courtship has been specified. When a ♀ individual is intact and receptive, it will initiate courtship when it is placed in the company of an inactive blinded partner.  相似文献

Classification of visual patterns, a differentiating sign of which is the position of the longer axis of an oval and the principal part of the image, was studied. Stimuli were presented at random to the left (LVF) or right (RVF) visual fields in two situations:same (preceding imageS 1 was of the same form and presented to the same visual field as the current imageS 2) anddifferent (S 1 differed fromS 2 by both form and location). Classification ofdifferent images was less effective compared with that ofsame images during stimulation of LVF and showed no dependence on the preceding image during stimulation of RVF. The matching of event-related potentials (ERP) in response toS 2 and differential curvesS 2S 1 revealed the processes related to accessing the information on the preceding stimulus and processing of the current stimulus, which simultaneously occur during the initial 50 ms in both hemispheres and in the 160–180 ms interval in the right hemisphere. Both processes were more expressed during stimulation of the contralateral visual field. In the 190–310 ms interval, discrimination of thesame anddifferent images was determined by processing of information about the current stimulus on the basis of the results of the preceding stage of analysis. This process was more expressed in the occipital, parietal and temporoparietooccipital regions of the right hemisphere independently of the stimulated visual field. The involvement of frontal regions at this stage of information processing was observed only at stimulation of RVF. The dependence of differences of ERP to thesame anddifferent images on the stimulated visual field was revealed for the 320–500-ms interval (N 400 and late positive complex) in the occipital regions.  相似文献

Hand raised nightingales were alternatively confronted with different series of songs which permitted labeling of particular learning situations and allowed detection of specific consequences of diverse learning conditions. We found that visual contact with a tutor affected both quality and quantity of acquired patterns. Without visual contact the birds acquired only song sections consisting of repeated vocal units', which proved to be relevant for species recognition. With visual contact the birds learnt every presented song type completely (→ song type sharing between tutor and learner). Furthermore, the birds developed additional song types individually: by distinct parameter variation, or by recombination of particular tutor song units (Fig. 1; Table 1). Background

In ecological situations, threatening stimuli often come out from the peripheral vision. Such aggressive messages must trigger rapid attention to the periphery to allow a fast and adapted motor reaction. Several clues converge to hypothesize that peripheral danger presentation can trigger off a fast arousal network potentially independent of the consciousness spot.

Methodology/Principal Findings

In the present MEG study, spatio-temporal dynamics of the neural processing of danger related stimuli were explored as a function of the stimuli position in the visual field. Fearful and neutral faces were briefly presented in the central or peripheral visual field, and were followed by target faces stimuli. An event-related beamformer source analysis model was applied in three time windows following the first face presentations: 80 to 130 ms, 140 to 190 ms, and 210 to 260 ms. The frontal lobe and the right internal temporal lobe part, including the amygdala, reacted as soon as 80 ms of latency to fear occurring in the peripheral vision. For central presentation, fearful faces evoked the classical neuronal activity along the occipito-temporal visual pathway between 140 and 190 ms.

Conclusions

Thus, the high spatio-temporal resolution of MEG allowed disclosing a fast response of a network involving medial temporal and frontal structures in the processing of fear related stimuli occurring unconsciously in the peripheral visual field. Whereas centrally presented stimuli are precisely processed by the ventral occipito-temporal cortex, the related-to-danger stimuli appearing in the peripheral visual field are more efficient to produce a fast automatic alert response possibly conveyed by subcortical structures.  相似文献

Abstract

An interactive computer system using a dot matrix approach has been developed and used to determine potentially significant features due to distortions in the B-DNA helix as a result of variations of purine and pyrimidine patterns. Sequences were compared using matrices which were generated using the Calladine-Dickerson rules (C.R. Calladine, J. Mol. Biol. 161, 343–352, 1982 and R.E. Dickerson, J. Mol. Biol. 766, 419–441, 1983). Having control over various parameters to enhance different aspects of the visual appearance of these matrices was helpful in discovering patterns that were not known a priori. Specifically, it was found that a pattern of alternating doublets of purines and pyrimidines appear to exist in regulatory regions. This event is shown to be beyond probabilistic expectation.  相似文献
