Abstract. 1. In a low-speed wind tunnel, male as well as female moths of Hadena bicruris responded to floral odours with positive anemotaxis. Hitherto, such orientation has only been demonstrated for male moths in response to pheromones.
2. H.bicruris had a maximum flight speed of 4.5–5.4ms-1 and stopped its flower visiting at a wind speed of 2.5–2.8 m s-1.
3. Deilephila elpenor had a similar maximum flight speed (4.5— 5.1 ms-1), but it continued visiting flowers up to wind speeds of 3.0–5.0 ms-1.
4. Apart from mechanical resistance during flight and flower visits, wind might have adverse effects on the energy budget and on evaporative water loss.  相似文献

The diet, habitat use and mercury concentration of the small fish species, the straight fin barb Barbus paludinosus , were studied in Lake Awassa, Ethiopia, for a period of 1 year from February 2003 to January 2004. Stable isotope signatures of nitrogen and carbon in different total length ( L T) classes were used to determine trophic positions and organic carbon sources, respectively. Barbus paludinosus mainly occupied the protected benthic habitats (littoral and profundal) of the lake. The δ13C values were in the range from −24 to −19‰, indicating that the carbon source for B. paludinosus was benthic, as well. Small individuals (≤ 60 mm L T) mainly preyed upon ostracods, intermediate sizes (60–100 mm) on aquatic insects and gastropods, while a tiny cyprinodont fish Aplocheilichthys antinorii dominated the diet of large individuals (100–160 mm). The progressively increase in δ15N with increasing L T also indicated a diet shift towards piscivory in larger individuals. The mercury concentration ranging from 0·02 to 0·74 mg kg−1 wet mass (wm), was unexpectedly high in this small species, and was significantly positively related to L T, as well as to δ15N. Some large individuals had mercury concentrations < 0·1 mg kg−1 wm, and low δ15N, indicating substantial variations in diet between individuals of same size. The study suggests that other piscivorous species which include B. paludinosus in their diet may have a high mercury intake risk.  相似文献

This study compares the results of three studies and assesses the effects of seasonal changes in the environment on populations of small mammals at three altitudes in Malawi (Zomba Plateau [1900 m], Liwonde National Park [550 m] and Lengwe National Park [100 m]). Zomba Plateau had a higher annual rainfall (mean 2244 mm), longer wet season, shorter dry season, cooler temperatures and smaller water deficit than either Liwonde NP or Lengwe NP (which had similar climates). Maximum grass biomass (and fluctuation index) was 814 g/m2 (1.7) on Zomba Plateau, 1066 g/m2 (2.7) at Liwonde, and 854 g/m2 (30.5) at Lengwe. Sixteen species of rodents were recorded, 7–9 at each study area; the species on Zomba Plateau did not occur at the lower altitudes, and the lower altitude species did not occur on Zomba Plateau. Percentage Similarity and Coefficients of Community showed that there was considerable similarity between Liwonde and Lengwe, but no similarity between either of them and Zomba Plateau. Mean population densities of small rodents (range, fluctuation index) were 23/ha (15–35, 2.3) on Zomba Plateau, 12.6 (2.7–19.1, 7.1) at Liwonde, and 14.5 (0.9–30.9, 33.9) at Lengwe. Stability of the environment tends to confer stability in demographic characteristics. Reproduction was mainly confined to the wet season (December to April) at all altitudes. Comparison of the proportion of new individuals each month, and the duration of residence by individuals, suggests that turnover of the population was slowest on Zomba Plateau and fastest at Lengwe. There was no evidence for reduced litter size, reduced opportunity for reproduction, or increased age to maturity at the highest altitude compared with the lower altitudes as has been recorded in temperate environments.  相似文献

The mid-latitude biodiversity ridge in terrestrial cave fauna   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
The world's obligate cave-dwelling fauna holds considerable promise for biogeographic analysis because it represents a large number of independent evolutionary experiments in isolation in caves and adaptation to subterranean life. We focus on seven north temperate regions of at least 2000 km2, utilizing more than 4300 records of obligate cave-dwelling terrestrial invertebrates. In North America, highest diversity was found in northeast Alabama while in Europe highest diversity was found in Ariège, France, and in southeast Slovenia. Based on these regions as well as more qualitative data from 16 other regions, we hypothesize that a ridge (ca 42°–46° in Europe and 34° in North America) of high biodiversity occurs in temperate areas of high productivity and cave density. This may reflect a strong dependence of cave communities on long term surface productivity (as reflected in actual evapotranspiration), because the subterranean fauna relies almost entirely on resources produced outside caves. This dependence may explain the unique biodiversity pattern of terrestrial cave invertebrates.  相似文献

Alveolinella quoyi , the largest living fusiform foraminifer, can be used to infer the paleobiology of extinct fusulinids and alveolinids. We measured test plus organic material weight, test weight, and test volume for A. quoyi , allowing the calculation of test density under various conditions. Tests have an average of 43% chamber space, and an average density of 1.5 gcm-3. Living individuals can only fill an average of 39% of their chamber space with protoplasm. If they fill the remaining space with sea water, average effective test density is 0.953 gcm-3, if the space is filled with a gas the density is 0.671 gcm-3. Living individuals can withstand current velocities of 3–4 m sec-1, velocities greater than commonly occur in A. quoyi's habitat. Dead tests have lower effective densities than many carbonate sedimentary particles (0.508 g cm-3 if the chamber space is gas filled, 0.953 g cm-3 if it is sea water filled), making their settling velocities slow relative to similarly shaped and sized particles. Their large size and high traction velocities (>0.2m sec-1) makes them unaffected by gentle currents which can remove 100–200 μ sized particles from the sediment. Their low settling velocity will tend to concentrate A. quoyi tests during subsequent resuspension, creating a layer of tests near the sediment-water interface. To assess if cuticular transpiration could contribute significantly to the high rates of water loss often observed in micropropagated plants after transfer to the nursery, it was tested whether adaxial cuticular water permeance (P) of leaves grown in vitro was higher than that of leaves grown ex vitro. For four species of micropropagated plants with hypostous leaves ( Delphinium elatum hybrid, Doronicum hybrid, Hosta sieboldiana var. elegans, Rodgersia pinnata ), P was determined with two independent techniques which gave similar results. Minimum adaxial overall conductance was measured with the same methods for a Heuchera hybrid which had amphistomatous leaves. Leaves of all species except Heuchera lost 36–65% of their original weight within 25 min after excision. Detached leaves whose abaxial surfaces had been coated lost only 25–38% of their original weight within 5–9 h. Permeances (P) were between 1 × 10−5 m s−1 and 1 × 10−4 m s−1, which was within the range of typical values found with leaves grown ex vitro. From these results and a critical assessment of the literature it is concluded that there is no evidence that P of micropropagated plants was high enough to contribute significantly to the desiccation problem at the transfer stage.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Arboreal and terrestrial ants were exposed to 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 (control)% r.h., at 30oC. Desiccation resistance increased with body size (as dry weight0.55), but not as quickly as expected from the consequences of the surface area and volume relationship (as dry weight0.67). Arboreal ants took 8 times longer to die than terrestrial ants of comparable size. Even after size effects were removed, desiccation resistance differed between various terrestrial species and showed a correlation with foraging patterns.
Arboreal and terrestrial ants whose waterproofing epicuticular lipids were removed by chloroform: methanol extraction had equally high water loss rates at 0% r.h. Unextracted arboreal ants had water loss rates half those of unextracted terrestrial ants, suggesting that differences between them were based on differences in epicuticular lipids. The lower water loss rates of arboreal ants contributed significantly to their longer survival under desiccation. Arboreal ants also had greater total rectal pad area than terrestrial ants, suggesting that they may be able to reclaim faecal water more effectively. There were no differences in the minimum viable water content between the two groups of ants. Both had water loss tolerances comparable with those of arthropods adapted to xeric environments. Initial water loss rates could not account for all of the differences in desiccation resistance between arboreal and terrestrial ants. Other adaptations to desiccation stress by arboreal ants are likely.
Comparisons of water loss rates and desiccation resistance between arboreal and desert ants suggest that the arboreal habitat is at least as stressful as the desert habitat.  相似文献

Abstract. Boundary-layer resistances of aquatic bryophytes for CO2 diffusion in water were estimated from wind tunnel measurements of evaporation of aniline in air, using the principle of dynamic similarity. The results indicated resistances at water velocities between 0.02 and 0.2 m s −1 ranging from about 35 to 5 s mm−1 and 70 to 9 s mm−1, respectively, for the mat-forming liverworts Nardia compressa and Scapania undulata , measured on a projected area (canopy) basis. Over a range of velocities from 0.01 to 0.2 m s−1 the estimated CO2 boundary-layer resistance of the streamer-like shoots of the moss Fontinalis antipyretica is between about 180 and 15 s mm−1. Comparison with experiments on photosynthetic 14CO2-uptake at a range of water velocities suggests that boundary-layer resistance limits photosynthesis at velocities below about 0.01 m s−l in Fontinalis and below about 0.1 m s−1 in the mat-forming species. It is suggested that high leaf-area index allows the mat growth form more effectively to exploit the low boundary-layer resistance at high velocities while remaining relatively invulnerable to drag. By contrast, the streamer form allows Fontinalis to maximize surface area under conditions where boundary-layer resistance is limiting.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Studies of factors influencing avian biodiversity yield very different results depending on the spatial scale at which species richness is calculated. Ecological studies at small spatial scales (plot size 0.0025–0.4 km2) emphasize the importance of habitat diversity, whereas biogeographical studies at large spatial scales (quadrat size 400–50,000 km2) emphasize variables related to available energy such as temperature. In order to bridge the gap between those two approaches the bird atlas data set of Lake Constance was used to study factors determining avian species diversity at the intermediate spatial scales of landscapes (quadrat size 4–36 km2). At these spatial scales bird species richness was influenced by habitat diversity and not by variables related to available energy probably because, at the landscape scale, variation in available energy is small. Changing quadrat size between 4 and 36 km2, but keeping the geographical extension of the study constant resulted in profound changes in the degree to which the amount of different habitat types was correlated with species richness. This suggests that high species diversity is achieved by different management regimes depending on the spatial scale at which species richness is calculated. However, generally, avian species diversity seems to be determined by spatial heterogeneity at the corresponding spatial scale. Thus, protecting the diversity of landscapes and ecosystems appears to ensure also high levels of species diversity.  相似文献

Abstract. The influence of sapwood water content on the conductivity of sapwood to water was measured on stem sections of Pinus contorta. A reduction in relative water content from 100 to 90% caused permeability to fall to about 10% of the saturated value.
Pressure–volume curves of branchwood and stem sapwood of Pinus contorta and Picea sitchensis have been analysed to definè the tissue capacitance and the time constant and resistance for water movement between stored water and the functional xylem as functions of tissue water potential. Three phases in water loss were discernible. In the initial phase at high water potentials (> –0.5 MPa), the capacitance was large, the time constant long and the resistance to flow large in comparison with intermediate water potentials (−0.5 to −1.5 MPa). At still lower water potentials (−1.5 to −3.0 MPa), the time constant and resistance declined still further but the capacitance had a tendency to increase again, especially in the stemwood of Sitka spruce. Typical values in the second phase were for the time constant 5 s, for the resistance 4 × 10−13 N s m−5 and for the capacitance (change in relative water content per unit change in potential) 1×10−11 m3 Pa−1. These parameters define the availability of stored water and are being used in a dynamic model of water transport in trees.  相似文献

Documenting within species group size variation is important to completely understand social organization within species and to interpret variation among species. Here, I investigated group size of African buffalo Syncerus caffer over 2 years in a heterogeneous landscape. African buffalo use closed continuous forest and vast open savannas, and anecdotal observations suggest that habitat type influences their social structure. While the Cape buffalo Syncerus caffer caffer is well studied, few data exist for the forest-dwelling Syncerus caffer nanus . I observed forest buffalo at Lopé National Park, Gabon, and examined variation of group size. Eighteen forest buffalo herds used the study area with an estimated population of 342 individuals (∼5 buffalo km−2). The mean group size for the 18 herds was 12 ± 2 (range of means=3–24), considerably smaller than Cape buffalo herds. For eight radiocollared forest buffalo, the mean group size was stable, varying little with time of day, across seasons, or between savanna and marsh habitat. However, herd size varied widely across herds, from fewer than 10 individuals in the smallest herds to more than 20 buffalo in the largest. Large herd size is associated with home ranges that contain substantial areas of open habitat, and thus more food resources than forested habitats.  相似文献

1. Population characteristics (density, size, reproductive patterns) of the predatory cladoceran Bythotrephes cederstroemii in south-east Lake Michigan were monitored at an offshore station (110 m) in 1995–98 and at a nearshore station (45 m) in 1997–98.
2. The mean density of B. cederstroemii at the offshore station was generally highest in July–September (145–914 m−2) and at the nearshore station in October–November (168–1625 m−2). In 1995 and 1998, density was also high at the offshore station in November (211–284 m−2). Fish predation may limit B. cederstroemii in nearshore regions in the summer. The maximum annual densities of B. cederstroemii for 1995–98 were generally similar to those reported from the late 1980s, when the species arrived in Lake Michigan.
3. Body size increased rapidly each year to a maximum in August. Thereafter, body size declined and converged for stage-2 and 3 individuals, suggesting food scarcity or size-selective fish predation was affecting large individuals.
4. Most reproduction occurred asexually (90%), and by stage 2 or 3 females (99%). Asexual brood size was highest when B. cederstroemii first appeared each year, and decreased in August, when larger neonates were produced. There appeared to be differences in reproductive mode for stage 2 and 3 females, with a higher percentage of stage 2 females reproducing sexually.  相似文献

Territorial defence by Brazilian damselfish Stegastes fuscus was studied in north-east Brazil through underwater observations. The fish mostly fed on Gellidium sp. and strongly defended a territory with a mean size of 2 m2 (range 1·27–3·07 m2); its mean ± s.d. feeding rate was 8·73 ± 2·44 bites min−1. Stegastes fuscus responded similarly to all intruding fish species, with aggressive behaviour becoming more pronounced only with an increase in the number of fishes in the sampled area. Analysis of attacks elicited by different fish species placed within S. fuscus ' territory, however, showed that it launched more attacks on conspecifics than on other fishes.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1 The vertical distribution of invertebrates (>0.053 mm) was studied in a sandy-bottomed, first-order stream on the Coastal Plain of Virginia, U.S.A. Invertebrate species composition, abundance and bio-mass were determined monthly over one year at sediment depth intervals of 0–1, 1–5, 5–15,15–30 and 30–40 cm.
2. The subsurface community was numerically dominated by species of Chironomidae, Nematoda and Crustacea, while much of the biomass was due to early instars of several species of Trichoptera.
3. Invertebrate density and biomass decreased significantly with depth in the substrate (ANOVA; P <0.05). Annual mean density decreased from 1,346,844 individuals m−3 at the surface to 13,578 individuals m−3 at 15–30 cm. Annual mean biomass decreased from 66.30 g m−3 at the surface to 0.44 g m−3 at 15–30 cm.
4. Dissolved oxygen decreased markedly from the surface to the 5 cm depth in the substrate, anaerobic conditions often occurring below 10 cm. Density and biomass both showed a significant positive relationship with dissolved oxygen concentration (Linear regression; P <0.05).

The Cape golden mole, Chrysochloris asiatica is an insectivore which excavates superficial foraging burrows as it searches for its food. It has a mean (±S.D.) resting metabolic rate (RMR) when newly captured of 1–17±0.17 cm3 O2g-1 h-1 ( n = 14), within the thermoneutral zone (TNZ) of 30–32°C.
The body temperature (Tb) of the mole in the TNZ is low 32.9 ± 0.36 ( n = 14) and remains stable at ambient temperatures (Tas) from 28–32°C. Above 32°C (range 34–37°C), Tb increases albeit slightly to 36 ± 1.75°C ( n = 14). The conductance is high 0.27 ± 006cm3 O2g-1 h-l°C-1 ( n = 46) at the lower limit of thermoneutrality. The mean RMR at 9°C (the lowest Ta tested) was 4.82±11 cm3 O2g-1h-1, which is 4.1 times that of the RMR in the TNZ.
At an ambient temperature of 9°C, three of the golden moles entered a state of torpor where the RMR was reduced from 5.9±0.56 to 10 1.0 ± 0.69cm3O2g-1h-1.  相似文献

Samples from a natural population of pike (Esox lucius L.) from the River Danube were used in a 12-month study to determine seasonal variations in biochemical parameters of pike blood sera, hepatosomatic index (HSI) and gonadosomatic index (GSI). The ranges of enzyme activities for sample means were: aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) 252.0–583.8 U 1−1, alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) 4.9–11 -2 U1 and alkaline phosphatase (AP) 39.5–91.8 U1−1. The ranges of other parameters analysed in serum were total protein 27.7–40.1 g 1 1, urea 0.57–l.52 mmol 1 1 and creatinine 21.2–118.6 μmol 1 1. The range of sample means for HSI and GSI were 1.28–4.16 and 0.07–20.2 respectively. Temperature ranged from 4.5 to 23.5°C. The activity of serum AP was positively correlated to water temperature in males only, while urea and creatinine showed a positive correlation to water temperature in individuals of both sexes. GSI was correlated significantly with HSI in females. Total protein reached the lowest values during the spawning period, while creatinine levels depended on both the sex and season.  相似文献

Results of a study of the fish community of the leaf litter banks in the lower reaches of the Taruma-Mirim, a small central Amazonian stream is presented. The Taruma-Mirim is an acidic, blackwater, forest stream which flows through igapo forest and enters the Rio Negro close to Manaus. The commonly held view that these blackwaters hold an impoverished ichthyofauna is challenged. The studied litter banks hold about 20 species of fish, all of which were found to live within distinct subregions of the habitat. Average fish density was about 100 individuals m−2. Absolute population sizes were found to be remarkably small; within a 200 m2 area the most abundant species had a population size of about 104 and the least abundant <102 individuals. It is argued that high species richness linked to specialized habitat requirements and small population size indicates considerable population stability. The factors leading to the evolution of such species richness are discussed.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were carried out to assess the tolerance and behaviour of the southern African spirostreptid millipede Alloporus uncinates (Attems) to moisture and temperature stress. Rates of water loss in dry air were 0–026 mg H20 cm-2 hour-1 for females and 0021 for males and remained relatively constant with an increase in temperature from 20 to 30°C but at higher temperatures there was a rapid increase in water loss, especially for females. In dry laboratory conditions at 30°C all individuals died within 30 days, whilst at 20°C at least 90% of individuals survived this period. Aggregation appeared to have no significant effect on survivorship but small body size conferred a survivorship advantage. Females burrowed earlier and to a greater depth than males, and initial moisture content of soil had a significant effect on mean burrow depth. Alloporus uncinatus , like other spirostreptid millipedes, appears to have considerable tolerance to dry conditions but the wide geographic and habitat range of this species may mean that the intensity of selection for tolerance to moisture stress may vary.  相似文献

The effects of light and temperature on cell size and cellular composition (chlorophyll, protein, carbohydrate) of two freshwater cryptophytes were studied with batch cultures. Neither of the species had a constant cell size but the size varied with growth conditions. At each temperature the smallest cells were recorded at the lowest experimental photon flux density. The smallest cells of Cryptomonas 979/67 had an average volume of 232 μm3 and the largest ones 1 020 μm3. In Cryptomonas 979/62 the smallest and largest cells measured 4 306 μm3 and 12 450 μm3. Both species increased their cellular chlorophyll content when PFB dropped below 110–120 μmol m-2 s-1. The highest and lowest chlorophyll contents of 979/67 were 7.45 fg μm-3 and 0.55 fg μm-2 respectively. For 979/62 the corresponding values were 10.23 fg μm-3 and 0.93 fg μm-3. In both species the protein content remained stable at PFDs higher than 110–120 μmol m-2 S-1. The highest content of protein measured in 979/67 was 638 fg μm-3 and the lowest 147 fg μm-3. For 979/62 these values were 1 036 fg μm-3 and 148 fg μm-3 respectively. The carbohydrate results were less clear and no pattern either in response to photon flux density or temperature was obvious. The lowest and highest contents recorded for 979/67 were 62 fg μm-3 and 409 fg μ-3 and for 979162, 36 fg μm-3 and 329 fg μm-3  相似文献

The population parameters (morphometrics, population size and biomass) were determined for leopard and angulate tortoises in the Thicket Biome, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Leopard tortoises had a mean total length of 306.47mm (SD = 94.65mm, range 59–496mm, n = 89). Males were smaller (mean total length 277.31mm, SD = 71.85mm, range 73–377mm, n = 36) than females (mean total length = 332.33mm, SD = 97.64mm, range 59–496mm, n = 53). Angulate tortoises had a mean total length of 155.17mm (SD = 33.89mm, range 59–194mm, n = 18). Males were larger (mean total length = 186mm, SD = 8.40mm, range 174–194mm, n = 5) than females (mean total length = 143.31mm, SD = 32.48mm, range 59–178mm, n = 13). The estimated population density for leopard tortoises was 0.85 tortoises ha−1 with an estimated biomass of 6.02kg −1. Angulate tortoise population density was estimated at 0.12 tortoises ha−1 with a mean biomass of 0.06kg ha−1. The possible consequences of this high density and biomass are discussed.  相似文献
