Objective: To determine whether interpersonal stress reduces youths’ motivation to exercise in a laboratory setting. Research Methods and Procedures: Physical activity and sedentary behavior were measured in boys and girls across a control day, after reading children's magazines, and on a stress day, after giving a videotaped speech. For one analysis, children were divided into low (n = 12) and high (n = 13) heart‐rate reactivity groups based on changes in heart rate to stress. In a second analysis, children were divided into low and high perceived level of stress based on changes in perceived stress. To determine differences in choice of exercise or sedentary behavior across the control and stress conditions, subjects chose either to exercise for progressively longer periods to earn a monetary reinforcer or to engage in a high‐rated sedentary behavior. Results: The choice to exercise was influenced by stress reactivity differently in the stress and control conditions. Low heart‐rate reactive children participated in similar (p > 0.50) amounts of exercise on the stress and control days, but high heart‐rate reactive children participated in less (p < 0.01) exercise (22.0 ± 2.5 vs. 26.3 ± 2.2 minutes) on the stress than control days. When grouped by change in perceived stress, there were no group differences, but subjects exercised longer (p < 0.01) on the control day than the stress day. Discussion: Interpersonal stress decreased exercise in children susceptible to interpersonal stress. Stress‐induced alterations in health behaviors may lead to weight gain in children.  相似文献

Objective: To investigate the effects of rosiglitazone (RSG) on insulin sensitivity and regional adiposity (including intrahepatic fat) in patients with type 2 diabetes. Research Methods and Procedures: We examined the effect of RSG (8 mg/day, 2 divided doses) compared with placebo on insulin sensitivity and body composition in 33 type 2 diabetic patients. Measurements of insulin sensitivity (euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp), body fat (abdominal magnetic resonance imaging and DXA), and liver fat (magnetic resonance spectroscopy) were taken at baseline and repeated after 16 weeks of treatment. Results: There was a significant improvement in glycemic control (glycosylated hemoglobin −0.7 ± 0.7%, p ≤ 0.05) and an 86% increase in insulin sensitivity in the RSG group (glucose-disposal rate change from baseline: 17.5 ± 14.5 μmol glucose/min/kg free fat mass, p < 0.05), but no significant change in the placebo group compared with baseline. Total body weight and fat mass increased (p ≤ 0.05) with RSG (2.1 ± 2.0 kg and 1.4 ± 1.6 kg, respectively) with 95% of the increase in adiposity occurring in nonabdominal regions. In the abdominal region, RSG increased subcutaneous fat area by 8% (25.0 ± 28.7 cm2, p = 0.02), did not alter intra-abdominal fat area, and reduced intrahepatic fat levels by 45% (−6.7 ± 9.7%, concentration relative to water). Discussion: Our data indicate that RSG greatly improves insulin sensitivity in patients with type 2 diabetes and is associated with an increase in adiposity in subcutaneous but not visceral body regions.  相似文献

Objective: Levels of estrogen, androgen, and prolactin have been related to risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. However, the determinants of these hormone concentrations are not established. The purpose of this study was to examine correlates of endogenous sex hormones. Research Methods and Procedures: Associations among adiposity, physical activity, and diet and concentrations of estradiol, free estradiol, estrone, testosterone, free testosterone, sex hormone‐binding globulin (SHBG), androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, and prolactin were evaluated in 267 postmenopausal women randomly selected from the Women's Health Initiative Dietary Modification Trial. Results: In multiple regression analyses on log‐transformed hormones, BMI was positively associated with estrone (β = 0.031, p < 0.001), estradiol (β = 0.048, p < 0.001), free estradiol (β = 0.062, p < 0.001), free testosterone (β = 0.017, p = 0.02), and prolactin (β = 0.012, p = 0.02) and negatively associated with SHBG (β = ?0.02, p = 0.001). Total physical activity (metabolic equivalent tasks per week) was negatively associated with concentrations of estrone, estradiol, and androstenedione (β = ?0.006, ?0.007, and ?0.005, respectively, all p ≤ 0.05). Using a composite variable of BMI and physical activity dichotomized by median values, women with high BMI/low physical activity had a mean estrone concentration of 28.8 pg/mL, compared with 24.1, 19.9, and 18.4 pg/mL for women with high BMI/high physical activity, low BMI/low physical activity, and low BMI/high physical activity, respectively (p trend < 0.001). Similar trends were observed for estradiol and free estradiol and, in inverse, for SHBG. Discussion: These associations may, in part, explain the positive associations between overweight/obesity and a sedentary lifestyle on breast cancer risk.  相似文献

Objective: Animal models suggest that fetal exposure to glucocorticoids can program adiposity, especially central adiposity, later in life. We examined associations of maternal corticotropin‐releasing hormone (CRH) levels in the late 2nd trimester of pregnancy, a marker of fetal glucocorticoid exposure, with child adiposity at age 3 years. Research Methods and Procedures: We analyzed data from 199 participants in Project Viva, a prospective cohort study of pregnant women and their children, At age 3 years, the main outcomes were age‐sex‐specific BMI z score and the sum of subscapular (SS) and triceps (TR) skinfold thicknesses to represent overall adiposity, and ratio of SS to TR (SS:TR) to represent central adiposity. Results: Mean (standard deviation) maternal 2nd trimester log CRH was 4.94 (0.56) pg/mL. At age 3, mean (standard deviation) for BMI z score was 0.52 (1.02); for SS + TR, 16.51 (3.94) mm; and for SS:TR, 0.67 (0.17). Log CRH was mildly inversely correlated with birth weight (r = ?0.08), chiefly because of its association with length of gestation (r = ?0.21) rather than fetal growth (r = ?0.004). After adjustment for sociodemographic factors, maternal smoking, BMI, and gestational weight gain, fetal growth, length of gestation, breastfeeding duration, and (for SS:TR only) child's 3‐year BMI, each increment of 1 unit of log CRH was associated with a reduction in BMI z score [?0.43; 95% confidence interval (CI), ?0.73, ?0.14; p = 0.004] and possible reduction in SS + TR (?1.10; 95% CI, ?2.33, 0.14; p = 0.08). In contrast, log CRH was associated with higher SS:TR (0.07; 95% CI, 0.02, 0.13; p = 0.007). Discussion: Fetal exposure to glucocorticoids, although associated with an overall decrease in body size, may cause an increase in central adiposity.  相似文献

Objective: Abdominal fat and myocyte triglyceride levels relate negatively to insulin sensitivity, but their interrelationships are inadequately characterized in the overweight. Using recent methods for measuring intramyocyte triglyceride, these relationships were studied in men with a broad range of adiposity. Research Methods and Procedures: Myocyte triglyceride content (1H‐magnetic resonance spectroscopy of soleus and tibialis anterior muscles and biochemical assessment of vastus lateralis biopsies), regional fat distribution (DXA and abdominal magnetic resonance imaging), serum lipids, insulin action (euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp), and substrate oxidation rates (indirect calorimetry) were measured in 39 nondiabetic men (35.1 ± 7.8 years) with a broad range of adiposity (BMI 28.6 ± 4.1 kg/m2, range 20.1 to 37.6 kg/m2). Results: Relationships between insulin‐stimulated glucose disposal and regional body fat depots appeared more appropriately described by nonlinear than linear models. When the group was subdivided using median total body fat as the cut‐point, insulin‐stimulated glucose disposal correlated negatively to all regional body fat measures (all p ≤ 0.004), serum triglycerides and free fatty acids (p < 0.02), and both soleus intramyocellular lipid (p = 0.003) and vastus lateralis triglyceride (p = 0.04) in the normal/less overweight group. In contrast, only visceral abdominal fat showed significant negative correlation with insulin‐stimulated glucose disposal in more overweight men (r = ?0.576, p = 0.01), some of whom surprisingly had lower than expected myocyte lipid levels. These findings persisted when the group was subdivided using different cut‐points or measures of adiposity. Discussion: Interrelationships among body fat depots, myocyte triglyceride, serum lipids, and insulin action are generally absent with increased adiposity. However, visceral abdominal fat, which corresponds less closely to total adiposity, remains an important predictor of insulin resistance in men with both normal and increased adiposity.  相似文献

Objective: In the present study, we undertook a two‐step fine mapping of a 20‐megabase region around a quantitative trait locus previously reported on chromosome 15q26 for abdominal subcutaneous fat (ASF) in an extended sample of 707 subjects from 202 families from the Quebec Family Study. Research Methods and Procedure: First, 19 microsatellites (in addition to the 7 markers initially available on 15q24‐q26; total = 26) were genotyped and tested for linkage with abdominal total fat, abdominal visceral fat, and ASF assessed by computed tomography and with fat mass (FM) using variance component‐based approach on age‐ and sex‐adjusted phenotypes. Second, 16 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped and tested for association using family‐based association tests. Results: After the fine mapping, the peak logarithm of odds ratio (LOD) score (marker D15S1004) increased from 2.79 to 3.26 for ASF and from 3.52 to 4.48 for FM, whereas for abdominal total fat, the peak linkage (marker D15S996) decreased from 2.22 to 1.53. No evidence of linkage was found for abdominal visceral fat. Overall, for genotyped SNPs, three variants located in the putative MCTP2 gene were significantly associated with FM and the three abdominal fat phenotypes (p ≤ 0.05). The major allele and genotype of rs1424695 were associated with higher adiposity values (p < 0.004). The same trend was found for the two other polymorphisms (p < 0.05). None of the other SNPs was associated with adiposity phenotypes. The linkage for FM became non‐significant (LOD = 0.84) after adjustment for the MCTP2 polymorphisms, whereas the one for ASF remained unchanged. Discussion: These results suggest that the MCTP2 gene, located on chromosome 15q26, influences adiposity. Other studies will be needed to investigate the function of the MCTP2 gene and its role in obesity.  相似文献

Objective: To determine whether physical activity, sedentary activities, and/or cardiorespiratory fitness are related to waist circumference in adolescents, as previously reported in adults. Research Methods and Procedures: The study subjects were a representative sample of Spanish adolescents (N = 2859; 1357 boys, 1502 girls; age, 13 to 18.5 years), all of whom were involved in the AVENA (Food and Assessment of the Nutritional Status of Adolescents) study. BMI, waist circumference, pubertal maturation status, and cardiorespiratory fitness were measured in all. Leisure‐time physical activity, sedentary activities, active commuting to school, and socioeconomic status were assessed by self‐reported questionnaires. Results: No relationship was found between leisure‐time physical activity and BMI or waist circumference. In contrast, and in both boys and girls and after adjustment for confounding variables, cardiorespiratory fitness was found to be inversely associated with waist circumference and BMI, independent of sedentary activities or physical activity (p ≤ 0.001). The maximum oxygen consumption explained 13% of the variance in waist circumference in boys and 16% in girls. Sedentary activities were independently and directly related to waist circumference in both boys and girls (p ≤ 0.05) and to BMI in boys (p ≤ 0.05). Sedentary activities explained 10% of the variance in waist circumference in boys and 18% in girls. The BMI‐adjusted waist circumference was inversely correlated with cardiorespiratory fitness in overweight‐obese boys (p ≤ 0.05) and showed a trend toward significance in girls (p ≤ 0.1). Discussion: Both moderate to high levels of cardiorespiratory fitness and sedentary activities, but not physical activity, are associated with lower abdominal adiposity, as measured by waist circumference.  相似文献

Objective: The role of leptin in the association between body mass, central adiposity, and blood pressure (BP) is controversial. This study evaluated the relationship between leptin and BP in relation to body mass index (BMI) and fat distribution in a large sample of untreated male adults. Research Methods and Procedures: The study population was made up of 457 untreated male employees of the Olivetti factory in Naples. Plasma leptin, complete anthropometry, BP, and relevant biochemical variables were measured. Results: Log‐transformed plasma leptin levels were directly associated with BMI (r = 0.661, p < 0.001) and waist circumference (r = 0.630; p < 0.001). Leptin also correlated with systolic (r = 0.258) and diastolic (r = 0.277) BP (p < 0.001). The association between leptin and BP was maintained after accounting for age, BMI (or waist circumference), log‐insulin, and serum creatinine (p < 0.01); this association was stronger than that with BMI. Logistic regression analysis showed that an increased prevalence of hypertension (BP ≥ 140 and/or 90 mm Hg) was associated with high plasma leptin levels when controlling for age and waist circumference (odds ratio, 1.99; 95%CI, 1.06 to 3.72) or for age and BMI (odds ratio, 1.92; 95%CI, 1.02 to 3.61). Discussion: A graded positive relationship between plasma leptin levels and BP was observed in this sample of untreated male adults. This association was independent of age, BMI, abdominal adiposity, and fasting plasma insulin. Moreover, elevated plasma leptin concentrations were associated with greater probability of hypertension, again independently of potential confounders.  相似文献

Objective: The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of a 10‐month after‐school physical activity (PA) program on body composition and cardiovascular (CV) fitness in young black girls. Research Methods and Procedures: Subjects were 8‐ to 12‐year‐olds recruited from elementary schools. Body composition was measured using anthropometrics {waist circumference and BMI, DXA [percentage body fat (%BF)] and bone mineral density (BMD)}, and magnetic resonance imaging [visceral adipose tissue (VAT)]. CV fitness was measured using a graded treadmill test. The intervention consisted of 30 minutes homework/healthy snack time and 80 minutes PA (i.e., 25 minutes skills instruction, 35 minutes aerobic PA, and 20 minutes strengthening/stretching). Analyses were adjusted for age, baseline value of the dependent variable, and sexual maturation (pediatrician observation). Results: Mean attendance was 54%. Compared with the control group, the intervention group had a relative decrease in %BF (p < 0.0001), BMI (p < 0.01), and VAT (p < 0.01) and a relative increase in BMD (p < 0.0001) and CV fitness (p < 0.05). Higher attendance was associated with greater increases in BMD (p < 0.05) and greater decreases in %BF (p < 0.01) and BMI (p < 0.05). Higher heart rate during PA was associated with greater increases in BMD (p < 0.05) and greater decreases in %BF (p < 0.005). Discussion: An after‐school PA program can lead to beneficial changes in body composition and CV fitness in young black girls. It is noteworthy that the control and intervention groups differed in change in VAT but not waist circumference. This suggests that changes in central adiposity can occur in response to PA, even in young children, but that waist circumference may not be a good indicator of central adiposity.  相似文献

Objectives: In ideopathic obesity, there is evidence that enhanced cortisol regeneration within abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue may contribute to adiposity and metabolic disease. Whether the cortisol regenerating enzyme, 11β‐hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11βHSD1), or glucocorticoid receptor (GRα) levels are altered in other adipose depots remains uncertain. Our objective was to determine the association between 11βHSD1 and GRα mRNA levels in four distinct adipose depots and measures of obesity and the metabolic syndrome. Research Methods and Procedures: Adipose tissue biopsies were collected from subcutaneous (abdominal, thigh, gluteal) and intra‐abdominal (omental) adipose depots from 21 women. 11βHSD1 and GRα mRNA levels were measured by real‐time polymerase chain reaction. Body composition, fat distribution, fat cell size, and blood lipid, glucose, and insulin levels were measured. Results: 11βHSD1 mRNA was highest in abdominal subcutaneous (p < 0.001) and omental (p < 0.001) depots and was positively correlated with BMI and visceral adiposity in all depots. Omental 11βHSD1 correlated with percent body fat (R = 0.462, p < 0.05), fat cell size (R = 0.72, p < 0.001), and plasma triglycerides (R = 0.46, p < 0.05). Conversely, GRα mRNA was highest in omental fat (p < 0.001). GRα mRNA was negatively correlated with BMI in the abdominal subcutaneous (R = ?0.589, p < 0.05) and omental depots (R = ?0.627, p < 0.05). Omental GRα mRNA was inversely associated with visceral adiposity (R = ?0.507, p < 0.05), fat cell size (R = ?0.52, p < 0.01), and triglycerides (R = ?0.50, p < 0.05). Discussion: Obesity was associated with elevated 11βHSD1 mRNA in all adipose compartments. GRα mRNA is reduced in the omental depot with obesity. The novel correlation of 11βHSD1 with omental fat cell size, independent of obesity, suggests that intracellular cortisol regeneration is a strong predictor of hypertrophy in the omentum.  相似文献

A study was conducted to assess the biological ability of Malpura rams to counter heat stress challenges and its impact on the productive performance in a semi-arid tropical environment. The eighteen adult Malpura rams (average body weight 55.0 kg) were divided into two groups, GI (n = 9; Control) and GII (n = 9; heat stress). The study was conducted for a period of 60 days. The results showed that body weight, body condition score, heart girth and feed intake were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in GII as compared to GI rams. The physiological responses i.e. respiration rate, pulse rate, rectal temperature and sweating rate (body and scrotum) were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in rams exposed to heat stress. Among the endocrine parameters, plasma T3, T4 and testosterone concentrations were significantly (p < 0.05) lower in GII rams, while cortisol concentration was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in GII rams. In addition, heat stress significantly (p < 0.05) reduced semen volume, total sperm motility, sperm concentration and progressive sperm motility in GII rams. The results indicated that Malpura rams adapted to the heat stress condition, however, while doing so their production performances were compromised.  相似文献

Objective: Adiposity rebound occurs when the ratio of the velocities of log(weight) to log(height) changes from <2 to >2. This study examined the timing of adiposity rebound in the context of the velocities of weight and height in early childhood because it is not known whether faster weight gain or slower gain in stature is the more important determinant. Research Methods and Procedures: This was a longitudinal study of 406 boys and 397 girls born in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1972 and 1973. Each child's height and weight were measured at 3 years of age and at least twice more as part of their two yearly assessments until 11 years of age. Results: The mean age of adiposity rebound was 6.6 ± 1.10 years (SD) for boys and 6.0 ± 1.21 years for girls. After adjusting for sex, the correlations between the timing of rebound and z‐scores for BMI, weight, and height at rebound were ?0.35, ?0.30, and ?0.14, respectively. Correlations between the timing of rebound and estimated values of weight and height velocities at 3 years were ?0.48 and ?0.00. The correlations with BMI and waist girth at 26 years were ?0.39 and ?0.35. Discussion: Children with an earlier adiposity rebound were heavier and had above average BMIs. Early rebound is the result of higher rates of weight gain, measured in percentage terms, rather than slower than average accrual of stature. This suggests that restraining weight gain could delay adiposity rebound and prevent obesity in early adulthood.  相似文献

Objective: To compare the expression of the metabolic syndrome in Spain and San Antonio, TX, two populations with major differences regarding their cardiovascular risk profile. Research Methods and Procedures: Cross‐sectional analysis of population‐based, epidemiological surveys using the metabolic syndrome definition of the National Cholesterol Education Program. In San Antonio, we limited our analysis to non‐Hispanic whites because non‐Hispanic whites are largely of European ancestry (n = 1339 in San Antonio and 2947 in Spain) Results: In men, increased central adiposity was more prevalent in San Antonio than in Spain (29.7 vs. 23.0%, p < 0.0001); in women, it was less prevalent in San Antonio than in Spain (40.2 vs. 66.4%, p < 0.0001). The metabolic syndrome followed that same pattern: more prevalent in men (28.9 vs. 20.8%, p = 0.019) and less in women from San Antonio (27.1 vs. 30.9%, p < 0.0001). In subjects with the metabolic syndrome, most women had increased central adiposity (92.6% in San Antonio and 97.5% in Spain), and most men had either increased central adiposity or blood pressure (99.2% in San Antonio and 95.0% in Spain). Discussion: Contrary to men, the metabolic syndrome is more prevalent in Spanish women than in women from San Antonio with differences that mirror differences in central adiposity. Central adiposity and blood pressure may be used to exclude the metabolic syndrome. Considering recent secular trends in obesity, we predict there will be an increase in the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in both populations in the coming years.  相似文献

Objective: Excess abdominal adiposity is a known risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Computed tomography can be used to examine the visceral (VAT) and subcutaneous (SAT) components of abdominal adiposity, but it is unresolved whether single‐slice or multi‐slice protocols are needed. Research Method and Procedures: Nine computed tomography scans were obtained in the lumbar spine region of 24 adults. The nine slices were obtained at three intervertebral positions (L2–L3, L3–L4, and L4–L5) and at 7 mm above and below these locations. Intra‐site and inter‐site differences in SAT, VAT, total adipose tissue, and the VAT/SAT ratio were examined using ANOVA and confidence intervals for pairwise differences between means. Results: Intervertebral SAT values increased from 103.1 ± 50.9 (standard deviation) cm2 at L2–L3 to 153.3 ± 68.8 cm2 at L4–L5, whereas the corresponding VAT values decreased from 164.3 ± 125.4 to 126.0 ± 82.7 cm2. The VAT/SAT ratio was not constant, decreasing from 1.8 ± 1.4 to 0.9 ± 0.7. Repeated‐measures ANOVA indicated significant inter‐ and intra‐site differences (p ≤ 0.02) for SAT, VAT, and the VAT/SAT ratio at L3?L4 and L4?L5 (p < 0.001). Discussion: These differences show the limitation of using a single‐slice assessment of abdominal fat distribution, both for a subject and between subjects. Furthermore, the sizeable differences in the intra‐site scans indicate that precise repositioning is needed for longitudinal studies. In summary, our findings suggest that a multi‐site imaging protocol may provide a more complete assessment of abdominal fat stores and distribution than use of a single site.  相似文献

Objective: To explore a quantitative trait locus (QTL) on human chromosome 1q affecting BMI, adiposity, and fat‐free mass phenotypes in the Quebec Family Study cohort. Research Methods and Procedures: Non‐parametric sibpair and variance component linkage analyses and family‐based association studies were performed with a dense set of chromosome 1q43 microsatellites and single‐nucleotide polymorphism markers in 885 adult individuals. Results: Linkage was observed between marker D1S184 and BMI (p = 0.0004) and with body fat mass or percentage body fat (p ≤ 0.0003), but no linkage was detected with fat‐free mass. Furthermore, significant linkages (p < 0.0001) were achieved with subsamples of sibpairs at both ends of phenotype distributions. Association studies with quantitative transmission disequilibrium tests refined the linkage to a region overlapping the regulator of G‐protein signaling 7 (RGS7) gene and extending to immediate upstream gene loci. Discussion: The present study indicates that the QTL on chromosome 1q43 specifically affects total adiposity and provides a genetic mapping framework for the dissection of this adiposity locus.  相似文献

Objective: To evaluate the interplay among abdominal adipose tissue distribution, the cortisol axis, the autonomic nervous system, and insulin resistance. Research Methods and Procedures: Two age‐, sex‐, and BMI‐matched groups were studied. Fifteen subjects were first‐degree relatives of patients with type 2 diabetes (R), and 15 had no family history of diabetes (controls, C). A hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp, cortisol measurements, and analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) were performed. Computed tomography was performed in a subgroup (n = 9 + 9) to determine abdominal adipose tissue distribution. Results: R tended to be less insulin‐sensitive than C (M value 9.2 ± 1.0 vs 10.3 ± 0.7 mg/kg per minute, not significant). Stimulation with tetracosactin or corticotropin releasing hormone yielded lower peak serum cortisol levels in R (p = 0.03 and p = 0.06, respectively). The amount of visceral abdominal fat (VAT) tended to be greater in R. In all subjects, VAT was negatively correlated to insulin sensitivity (r = ?0.93, p < 0.001). There was a positive association between VAT and resting heart rate (r = 0.70, p = 0.003) and sympathetic/parasympathetic ratio in HRV assessment after tilt (r = 0.53, p = 0.03). Subcutaneous abdominal tissue was not associated with insulin sensitivity or any of the hormonal or HRV assessments. Discussion: Subjects genetically predisposed for type 2 diabetes had a tendency toward a larger amount of VAT and to lower insulin sensitivity compared with control subjects. The amount of visceral fat was strongly associated with insulin resistance and signs of a high ratio of sympathetic vs. parasympathetic reactivity. A large amount of visceral fat may act in concert with sympathetic/parasympathetic imbalance to promote the development of insulin resistance, and this may be partly independent of genetic background.  相似文献

Objective: We examined whether the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and insulin sensitivity (IS)/secretion is independent of adiposity in healthy African‐American (n = 65) and white (n = 57) youth. Research Methods and Procedures: IS and β‐cell function were evaluated by a 3‐hour hyperinsulinemic‐euglycemic and a 2‐hour hyperglycemic (12.5 mM) clamp, respectively. Total fat was measured by DXA and abdominal fat with computed tomography. CRF (peak volume of oxygen) was measured using a graded maximal treadmill test. Results: Independent of race, CRF was inversely (p < 0.05) related to total and abdominal fat, fasting insulin and first phase insulin secretion, and positively (p < 0.05) related to IS. When subjects were categorized into low (≤50th) and high (>50th) CRF groups, IS was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the high compared with the low CRF group independently of race. Furthermore, first and second phase insulin secretion were lower (p < 0.05) in the high CRF group in comparison with the low CRF group in both races. However, in multiple regression analyses CRF was not (p > 0.05) an independent predictor of IS and acute insulin secretion after accounting for total adiposity. Discussion: Our findings demonstrate that low CRF is associated with decreased IS compensated by higher insulin secretion in both African‐American and white youth. However, this relationship disappears after adjusting for differences in adiposity, suggesting that the association between fitness and IS is mediated, at least in part, through fatness.  相似文献

Objective: Prior studies have reported ethnic differences in adiponectin and ghrelin, but few have assessed the role of body size in normoglycemic women. We compared fasting adiponectin and ghrelin concentrations in normoglycemic 40‐ to 80‐year‐old Filipino, African‐American, and white women. Methods: Participants included women from the Rancho Bernardo Study (n = 143), the University of California‐San Diego Filipino Women's Health Study (n = 136), and the Health Assessment Study of African‐American Women (n = 212). A 2‐hour oral glucose tolerance test was administered; glucose, insulin, lipid, and anthropometric measurements were obtained. Fasting adiponectin and ghrelin were measured by radioimmunoassay. Results: Whites and Filipinas had similar BMI (23.7 and 24.3 kg/m2, respectively), waist girth (75.6 and 77.2 cm, respectively), and total body fat (27.4 and 28.5%, respectively); African‐Americans had significantly larger BMI (28.8 kg/m2), waist girth (86.3 cm), and body fat (39.6%, p < 0.0001). Adiponectin was lower in Filipinas (8.90 µg/mL) and African‐Americans (9.67 µg/mL) compared with whites (15.6 µg/mL, p < 0.001) after adjusting for age, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA‐IR), and waist‐to‐hip ratio. Compared with whites, Filipinas (β = ?5.06, p < 0.0001) and African‐Americans (β = ?6.85, p < 0.0001) had significantly lower adiponectin levels after adjusting for age, waist‐to‐hip ratio, HOMA‐IR, triglycerides, high‐density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, exercise, and alcohol use. Ghrelin was significantly lower in Filipinas compared with African‐Americans (1146.9 vs. 1412.2 pg/mL, p < 0.001), and this observation persisted in multivariable analysis (β = ?245.4, p < 0.0001). Ghrelin levels did not differ between whites (1356.9 pg/mL) and either ethnic group. Discussion: Normoglycemic Filipino and African‐American women had significantly lower adiponectin concentrations than white women, and Filipinas had lower ghrelin levels than African‐Americans, independently of body size or indices of insulin resistance or lipids.  相似文献

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate physical characteristics, nutrient intake, physical activity level, and body image in white (CC), African‐American (AA), and Hispanic‐American (HA) female adolescents. Research Methods and Procedures: High school volunteers were solicited for this study. Self‐reported information was used to determine subject characteristics, family income, physical activity, body image, and nutrient intake. Physical evaluations were used to determine body mass index, percent body fat, fat distribution, resting heart rate, and blood pressure (BP). Results: Results showed that AA girls displayed significantly higher diastolic BP than HA girls (p = 0.029). CC adolescents showed greater physical activity (p = 0.010) and lower adiposity than HA adolescents (p = 0.048), as well as lower subscapular skinfold than AA adolescents (p = 0.018). AA adolescents selected a higher ideal body size than CC girls (p = 0.038). There was also a significant difference in percentage carbohydrates (p < 0.034) and cholesterol consumed (p < 0.016) among groups, with CC girls showing the highest values for carbohydrates and lowest values for cholesterol intake among groups. Discussion: Given our findings of higher adiposity and lower physical activity levels in HA adolescents and greater diastolic BP levels and subscapular skinfold in AA adolescents, more interventions should be targeted toward improving health‐related variables among minority populations.  相似文献
