1. Using two‐ and three‐dimensional video recordings, we examined the steps involved in predation that lead to the differential vulnerability of three sympatric rotifer sibling species (Brachionus plicatilis, B. ibericus and B. rotundiformis) to a co‐occurring, predatory, calanoid copepod (Arctodiaptomus salinus). 2. Brachionus rotundiformis, the smallest prey tested, was the most vulnerable with the highest encounter rate, probability of attack, capture and ingestion, and the lowest handling time. 3. Comparison of our results with those of a previous study shows that A. salinus is a more efficient predator than a co‐occurring cyclopoid copepod (Diacyclops bicuspidatus odessanus) feeding on these same rotifer species. However, despite its higher capture rates, A. salinus seems to be less selective than D. b. odessanus based on attack distances and prey handling times. 4. The differential vulnerability to both calanoid and cyclopoid copepod predation can help explain the coexistence and seasonal succession of these co‐occurring rotifer species.  相似文献

Interspecific interactions in the marine rotifer microcosm   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Copepods and protozoans often co-exist in marinerotifer mass cultures. Interspecific interactionbetween the rotifer Brachionus rotundiformisTschugunoff and eight other zooplankton species, namely Brachionus plicatilis O. F. Müller (rotifer),Diaphanosoma celebensis Stingelin (cladoceran),Tigriopus japonicus Mori, Acartia sp. (copepod),Euplotes sp., Vorticella sp., an unidentifiedprotozoan species (P1 strain) (protozoan) and Artemiasp. (anostracan) at two developmental stages (nauplii –0.95 mm, 0 days old; adults – 3.3 mm, 19 days old) wereinvestigated in the laboratory. There was no contaminating species that contributedto an increase in rotifer population growth during theexperiments. Four types of interspecific interactionswere seen between B. rotundiformis and otherco-existing zooplankton species. These include effectson population growth: (1) both species declined, (2) onespecies is promoted while the other is not influenced,(3) one species is declined while the other is notinfluenced and (4) one species is promoted while theother declined. The first type was exhibited by B. rotundiformis vs B. plicatilis, B. rotundiformis vsD. celebensis and B. rotundiformis vs Artemia sp. The second type was exhibited by B. rotundiformis vsVorticella sp. and the third type by B. rotundiformisvs Euplotes sp. and B. rotundiformis vs T. japonicus. The fourth type was exhibited by B. rotundiformis vs Acartia sp. and B. rotundiformis vs P1 strain.  相似文献

The work of Kazutsugu Hirayama over the past 25 yearspromoted the wide use of the marine rotifer Brachionusplicatilis as an experimental model in zooplanktonecology. His reports about the nature of geneticvariation in the B. plicatilis complex stimulated usto investigate how mate recognition maintains speciesboundaries. For the past several years, we haveexamined chemical communication between female andmale B. plicatilis. Here we report on the comparativebinding of polyclonal antibody against the materecognition pheromone (MRP) to three B. plicatilisstrains and three B. rotundiformis strains.Quantification of anti-MRP binding permitsinvestigation of how the female mating signal differsamong closely related Brachionus species and strains.Antibody binding reflects differentiation independentof the male receptor which has been describedelsewhere. Anti-MRP bound to females of all sixstrains and was localized in the corona. Antibodybinding greatly reduced mating in all three B. plicatilis strains. However, antibody bindingsignificantly reduced mating in only one of the B. rotundiformis strains. The MRP of both species has asimilar molecular weight, but the differential bindingsuggests that the mate recognition pheromone onfemales has differentiated in B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis.  相似文献

Prey characteristics affecting vulnerability of a number of rotifer species to the predator Acanthocyclops robustus were investigated. Body volume was the main feature affecting the probability of attack after encounter and, with the exception of Polyarthra major, capture after attack. The lorica provided protection against predation in some species and a skipping escape response reduced the likelihood of capture in Polyarthra major.  相似文献

1. Interactions were observed between three morphotypes of the predatory rotifer Asplanchna silvestrii and six different prey (Brachionus plicatilis, B. rotundiformis, B. pterodinoides, B. satanicus, Hexarthra jenkinae and copepod nauplii) to understand the differences in feeding abilities among morphotypes that may have led to the evolution of this predator polymorphism. The outcome of predation events was affected significantly, both by predator morphotype and prey type. Predator morphotypes also interacted differently with different prey types. 2. The two smaller morphotypes, the saccate and the cruciform, responded similarly to prey overall, except that the smallest morphotype (saccate) was unable to ingest the most mobile prey (nauplii) and less able to ingest relatively large prey (B. plicatilis). The largest morphotype, the campanulate, had the highest encounter rate with prey, but the lowest probability of attack after encounter, so that it consumed far fewer prey per feeding bout than did the smaller morphotypes. This may have been because campanulates prefer larger prey than used in this study. 3. Highly mobile prey (H. jenkinae and copepod nauplii) were much less susceptible to predation than the less mobile Brachionus species. While evasiveness reduced attacks by saccates and cruciforms, campanulates did not have a significantly lower attack rate on H. jenkinae and copepod nauplii than on less evasive prey. Large body size moderately defended B. plicatilis against ingestion by saccates only. The short-spined B. satanicus was the only prey that was rejected after capture, resulting in lower ingestion probabilities for B. satanicus than other brachionid prey.  相似文献

gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) have been shown to increase the reproduction of the Brachionus plicatilis (NH3L strain). In the present study, the endogenous presence of GABA and 5-HT in the rotifers B. plicatilis (NH3L and Kamiura strains) and Brachionus rotundiformis (Langkawi strain) were confirmed by dot blot immunoassay and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). HPLC showed that GABA and 5-HT concentrations in the three rotifer strains range from 71 to 188 pmol/mg and from 12 to 64 pmol/mg, respectively. A total of 33 amino acids were also detected in B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis, with glutamic acid, serine, glycine, taurine, threonine, alanine, arginine, proline, valine and isoleucine in high concentrations relative to other amino acids.  相似文献

In many shallow, eutrophic subtropical ponds, brachionid rotifers are common prey of the predatory copepod Mesocyclops thermocyclopoides. The predatory rotifer Asplanchna intermedia, which is itself a potential prey of the copepod, also feeds preferentially on brachionids. We studied in the laboratory the population dynamics of two mutually competing prey species, Brachionus angularis and B. calyciflorus, in the presence of the two predators A. intermedia and M. thermocyclopoides. The experimental design included separate population dynamics studies with one prey–one predator, two prey–one predator, one prey–two predator, and two prey–two predator systems. These combinations were compared with controls, in which both the prey species (B. angularis and B. calyciflorus) were grown separately and in combination with each other. In the absence of any predator, B. angularis generally eliminated the larger B. calyciflorus. Selective predation by the copepod allowed B. calyciflorus to persist longer in competition with B. angularis. Feeding by M. thermocyclopoides on A. intermedia reduced the predation pressure on B. calyciflorus. However, given enough time, the cyclopoid copepod was able to eliminate both the brachionids as well as the predatory Asplanchna.  相似文献

The accumulation of evidence during the last decade led to thesplitting of the Brachionus plicatilis complex (Rotifera) intotwo morphologically recognizable species: B. plicatilis Müllerand B. rotundiformis Tschugunoff, previously referred to asL- and S-type B. plicatilis (s.l.), respectively. However, recentpopulation genetics and molecular studies have revealed thateach of these taxa concern cryptic species complexes. In particular,in Torreblanca Marsh, a wetland on the Mediterranean coast ofSpain, three genetically distinct groups in this rotifer complexhave been shown to co-occur. Differences in genetic markers, ecological preferences, mixis responses, mating behaviour andno evidence of gene flow between them have led to the conclusionthat they must be considered as three different biological species. In this study we present a detailed comparative analysis usinglight and scanning electron microscopy of laboratory strainsenabling a morphological characterization of the three species.Fine morphology and morphometry revealed taxonomic charactersconstant enough to recognize three well-defined morphologies, which always correspond with the respective biological speciesidentified. Since no type material of both B. plicatilis andB. rotundiformis is available, we designed our Spanish clonesas neotypes, which would allow further comparative work. Furthermore,B. ibericus n. sp. is described. This study sets the first stepfor a complete characterization of the biological diversitycontained within this economically important species complex.  相似文献

We tested the outcome of predation by juvenile roach on the calanoid copepod Eudiaptomus gracilis and the similar sized cyclopoid copepod Cyclops vicinus in laboratory experiments with mixed and single-prey. When ovigerous females and adult non-ovigerous females of the calanoid copepod and the cyclopoid copepod were offered in equal numbers to the fish in the mixed-prey experiments, the cyclopoid copepods were significantly more heavily preyed upon than the calanoids. Between 14 and 16 females of the cyclopoid copepod and only between 2 and 4 calanoids had been consumed after the observation period of two hours. The single-prey experiments revealed that the conspicuousness of the calanoid vs the cyclopoid depended on sex and gravidity. Ovigerous females of the cyclopoid copepod were slightly earlier detected by the fish than ovigerous females of the calanoid, probably a result of the highly visible egg-sacs carried by the cyclopoid females. Females without eggs and males of the cyclopoid copepod were recognized later by the predator than females without eggs or males of the calanoid, probably a result of the different behaviours of the different copepod taxa. Cyclopoids frequently congregated near the aquarium bottom while calanoids were closer to the water surface where they were better visible. The calanoid copepod could better escape the fish's attacks than the cyclopoid copepod. Egg-bearing females of both the calanoid and the cyclopoid copepod could significantly better escape than non-ovigerous females or males. Probably ovigerous females react very early to water disturbances caused by the predator. Activity measurements showed that the cyclopoid copepod displayed 2 to 4 times more hops per time unit than the calanoid. Probably the high number of jerky movements displayed by the cyclopoid attracted attention of the predator and contributed to its greater vulnerability.  相似文献

We used mesocosms to analyze predation impacts on the prey populations and prey community structures by two cyclopoid copepod species, the larger Mesocyclops pehpeiensis and the smaller Thermocyclops taihokuensis, who coexist with small-sized herbivorous zooplankton species in a fish-abundant lake. The overall predation impact on the prey populations was stronger for Mesocyclops than for Thermocyclops. Mesocyclops had a strong and less selective impact on the rotifer community but a selective impact on the crustaceans. In contrast, Thermocyclops had a selective predation impact on rotifers but a weak and less selective impact on the crustacean community. As a result, the former predator reduced the diversity of the crustacean community but not the rotifer community, while the latter had an opposite impact on the diversities of the two communities. It has been suggested that fish induce development of a zooplankton community dominated by the small-sized zooplankton species in fish-abundant lakes. Our results demonstrated that cyclopoid copepods altered species composition and diversity of the small-sized zooplankton community in such lakes. Thus, the results have given an important suggestion on the role of the invertebrate predator cyclopoid copepods, which often coexist with fish, that they determine population dynamics and community structures of small-sized zooplankton in fish-abundant lakes.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The hypothesis that size-selective predation and species-specific prey behaviours facilitate the coexistence between larvae of invasive Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and U.S.A.-native Ochlerotatus triseriatus (Say) was tested experimentally with the predator Corethrella appendiculata (Grabham).
2. Larval behaviours associated with a higher risk of predation were identified, and prey behavioural responses were tested in either the physical presence of predators or in water containing predation cues. Larvae that thrashed on container bottoms had a higher risk of being captured by fourth instar C. appendiculata than did larvae resting on the water surface. Ochlerotatus triseriatus , but not A. albopictus , adopted low-risk behaviours in response to water-borne cues to predation. Both prey species reduced risky behaviours in the physical presence of the predator, but O. triseriatus showed a stronger response.
3. The vulnerability of 2nd and 3rd instar prey to predation was compared, and behavioural responses were correlated with prey vulnerability. Second instars of both species were more vulnerable to predation by C. appendiculata than were 3rd instars, and the 3rd instar A. albopictus was more vulnerable than O. triseriatus of the same stage. All instars of O. triseriatus showed a similar reduction of risky behaviours in response to the presence of C. appendiculata despite 4th instar prey being relatively invulnerable to size-selective predation.
4. Weaker predator avoidance, coupled with superior competitive ability, of invasive A. albopictus is likely to contribute to its coexistence with O. triseriatus in containers of the south-eastern U.S.A., where C. appendiculata can be abundant.  相似文献

Condensed suspension of Chlorellavulgaris was used for the food of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and B. rotundiformis inplace of Nannochloropsis oculata. Thisreport describes the characteristics of C. vulgaris as arotifer food in comparison with N. oculata and thepresent status of this field. The cell components of C. vulgarissuch as protein content, amino acids, minerals andvitamins are generally similar to those of N. oculata. However, the taxonomic status of thesealgal species are different. Based on thesimilarity of cell components, the dietary value ofC. vulgaris is equal in value to that of N. oculata for rotifer growth. Dietary value ofC. vulgaris can be improved by addition ofvitamin B12. This improved C. vulgaris is currently widely used as an indispensable food organism for rotifer culture. Recent investigationshave shown that the use of the condensed suspensionof C. vulgaris makes it possible tosignificantly increase the rotifer density atharvest. Application of condensed C. vulgaris has made rotifer culture quite easy because theculture of N. oculata is no longer required, and intensive rotifer production in aquaculture cannow be realized.  相似文献

The predation cycle (encounter, attack, capture and ingestion or survival) by adult female Acanthocyclops robustus was observed for four crustacean prey types. The chief defense of A. robustus nauplii was escape response ability, reducing the probability of capture after attack, and, most likely, attack after encounter. The most important feature reducing the vulnerability of Ceriodaphnia and Daphnia species was large body size, decreasing the probability of capture after attack. Escape response ability and carapace strength/integrity further reduced vulnerability. Carapace strength/integrity was an effective defense for Bosmina longirostris, reducing the probability of ingestion after capture. The predation cycle by juvenile A. robustus was examined for three prey types. All three prey types seemed to be readily attacked. Due to their possession of loricae, Keratella cochlearis and Pompholyx sulcata were seldom eaten, while the illoricate Synchaeta kitina was highly vulnerable.Egg vulnerability after attack by the adult female predator was analysed. The eggs of Brachionus calyciflorus, Pompholyx sulcata and Filinia longiseta were rarely eaten, although the adults of the latter were usually ingested (thus causing the eggs to float free). Out of three attacks recorded on Keratella Quadrata, the eggs were eaten (or destroyed) twice.Handling times by the adult female predator were measured for a number of prey types. The shortest mean handling time was for Synchaeta kitina (less than one second), while the longest was on Ceriodaphnia species (716 seconds). Results were quite variable. Handling time was significantly positively related to prey body volume, while exoskeletal strength/integrity also increased this time. No effect of temperature on handling time was found for Synchaeta pectinata or Polyarthra major between 15 and 26.5 °C.  相似文献

We quantified the predation of Acanthocyclops americanus from the shallow Mediterranean lake Albufera, using gut contents from field collections and laboratory feeding tests. For functional response studies, we used Brachionus plicatilis (at 6 concentrations, 400–4000 ind. 40 ml−1) and Diaphanosoma mongolianum (at 2–20 ind. 40 ml−1). Copepod feeding rates were also estimated using different proportions of rotifer prey and lake seston (0–67.5% of seston + 40 individuals of B. plicatilis). Prey selection studies were conducted using five zooplankton species: Brachionus angularis, Brachionus plicatilis, Keratella tropica, Daphnia magna and Diaphanosoma mongolianum. Gut contents of field-collected adult Acanthocyclops contained filamentous algae and cyanobacteria and 16 zooplankton species (Keratella cochlearis, unspined and spined forms, K. tropica, Brachionus plicatilis, Brachionus calyciflorus, Brachionus angularis, Brachionus variabilis, Asplanchna girodi, Polyarthra vulgaris, Synchaeta pectinata, Lepadella rhomboides, unidentified bdelloids, Alona rectangula, Chydorus sphaericus, Bosmina longirostris, D. magna, Ceriodaphnia dubia and copepod nauplii). When fed B. plicatilis or D. mongolianum, female A. americanus had higher prey consumption rates than males. Increased proportion of lake seston caused reduced consumption of brachionid prey. Our data suggest that A. americanus is omnivorous in nature.

In order to estimate predation risk in nature, two basic components of predation need to be quantified: prey vulnerability, and density risk. Prey vulnerability can be estimated from clearance rates obtained from enclosure experiments with and without predators. Density risk is a function of predator density, and the spatial and temporal overlap of the predator and prey populations. In the current study we examine the importance of the vertical component of overlap in making accurate estimates of predation risk from the invertebrate predator Mesocyclops edax on rotifer versus crustacean prey. The results indicate that assumptions of uniform predator and prey densities cause a significant underestimation of predation risk for many crustacean prey due to the coincident vertical migration of these prey with the predator. The assumption of uniformity is more reasonable for estimating predation risk for most rotifer prey.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. We analysed the vulnerability of a number of cladoceran species ( Bosmina longirostris , B. fatalis , Diaphanosoma brachyurum , Ceriodaphnia reticulata , Daphnia ambigua and D. pulex ) to predation by Mesocyclops leuckarti in the laboratory.
2. The prey species represented a wide range of body size, morphology, and swimming behaviour. To compare vulnerability, we measured the efficiency of capture and ingestion of each prey species by Mesocyclops . We also measured the rate at which prey were damaged in attacks by Mesocyclops .
3. Mesocyclops preyed effectively on Diaphanosoma and small juvenile Ceriodaphnia but not on Bosmina or Daphnia . Observations suggested that various defence mechanisms, including protruding structures and swimming behaviour and speed, are important in determining prey vulnerability.
4. The body size of Daphnia and Ceriodaphnia seems to be important, because larger animals were better able to escape Mesocyclops attacks. Attacks by Mesocyclops often caused fatal damage, however, even to large Daphnia .  相似文献

1. We have studied the numerical and functional responses of campanulate morphs of Asplanchna intermedia fed five species of rotifer ( Brachionus rubens , B. patulus , B. calyciflorus , Hexarthra mira and Filinia longiseta ). The vulnerability of the prey varied with their morphology and mode of swimming.
2. To test the numerical and functional responses, prey species differing in their morphology and mode of swimming were provided. Responses were also tested with mixtures of evasive and non-evasive prey provided in three different ratios.
3. A. intermedia showed a type II functional response to all the prey species provided.
4. The population growth rate of A. intermedia on the various prey species provided ranged from a minimum of –0.24 to a maximum of 0.68. There was a significant correlation between the capturability of a prey species and the population growth rate of the predator feeding on it. The capturability of a prey species also has a significant influence on the maximal predator density but not on the time taken to reach it.
5. Observations from a field study undertaken over a 10-month period to study the prey preferences of A. intermedia in nature were corroborated by the laboratory findings.  相似文献

1. Introduced or invading predators may have strong impacts on prey populations of the recipient community mediated by direct and indirect interactions. The long-term progression of predation effects, covering the invasion and establishment phase of alien predators, however, has rarely been documented.
2. This paper documents the impact of an invasive, specialized planktivorous fish on its prey in a subarctic watercourse. Potential predation effects on the crustacean plankton, at the community, population and individual levels, were explored in a long-term study following the invasion by vendace ( Coregonus albula ).
3. Over the 12-year period, the density and species richness of zooplankton decreased, smaller species became more abundant and Daphnia longispina , one of the largest cladocerans, was eliminated from the zooplankton community.
4. Within the dominant cladocerans, including Daphnia spp., Bosmina longispina and Bosmina longirostris , the body size of ovigerous females and the size at first reproduction decreased after the arrival of the new predator. The clutch sizes of Daphnia spp. and B. longirostris also increased.
5. Increased predation pressure following the vendace invasion induced many effects on the crustacean zooplankton, and we document comprehensive and strong direct and indirect long-term impacts of an introduced non-native predator on the native prey community.  相似文献

1. Predation on livestock is one of the main reasons for low tolerance against large carnivores in many parts of the world. Measures to reduce the conflicts have been developed, but resources for using them are often scarce. If wildlife managers as well as farmers learn more about when the risk of predation on livestock is higher, they will be able to make more effective use of resources for reducing predation.
2. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the risk of predation on livestock immediately after an attack is higher on the affected farm compared with other farms in the same area. Data on sheep predation by brown bear Ursus arctos , lynx Lynx lynx and wolf Canis lupus in Sweden 1998–2006 were used in the analysis.
3. On depredated farms there was approximately a 55 times higher risk for a repeat predation event within 12 months compared to any other farm in the same area. During the first 5 weeks, 63%, 60% and 50% of the repeat attacks had occurred.
4. We suggest that the main mechanism behind repeat attacks on livestock is that carnivores return to the kill site to feed on carrion. Where livestock are still present and unprotected at the kill site when the carnivore returns, the farms will suffer a higher likelihood of a further attack compared to livestock on other farms. This study uses data from Sweden but we argue that the pattern will be the same in any part of the world where the ranges of livestock and large carnivores overlap.
4. Synthesis and applications . As the risk of an attack is higher directly after an initial attack, it will be more cost-effective to implement measures designed to reduce livestock predation by large carnivores at that time, i.e. within the following 5 weeks. Temporary proactive measures are usually simpler and cheaper than permanent deterrents and we recommend their use wherever resources are limited.  相似文献
