The influence of weather and egg contamination on the dynamics of herbage contamination with infective larave of Cooperia oncophora was investigated on artificially contaminated grass plots and in a grazing experiment with 24 first-year grazing calves from May to October 1987 in Lower Saxony, Germany. On the experimental plots the larval translation was highest at the beginning of July and in the second part of September, following high mean weekly temperatures. Between July and September peak recovery of larvae from herbage occurred 4 weeks after contamination. A seasonal pattern of larval translation similar to that on the experimental plots could be demonstrated on the grazed pastures when the number of larvae per m2 of pasture had been adjusted to the previous egg output by means of a contamination index. The resulting 'relative larval density' is regarded as a good indicator for larval development on pasture. From July to September the larval population on pasture resulted mainly from the egg contamination 2-3 weeks earlier. The short persistence of the infective larvae on herbage was probably due to the frequent and heavy rainfall throughout the season, causing a passive washout of larvae into the soil. On single pastures the larval density started to increase within 1 week after the calves had first contact with these fields. The impact of the calves on the distribution of larvae is discussed.  相似文献

Compared to continuous grazing (CG), rotational grazing (RG) increases herbage production and thereby the resilience of grasslands to intensive grazing. Results on feed intake and animal performance, however, are contradictory. Hence, the objective of the study was to determine the effects of RG and CG on herbage mass, digestibility of ingested organic matter (dOM), organic matter intake (OMI) and live weight gain (LWG) of sheep in the Inner Mongolian steppe, China. During June–September 2005–2008, two 2-ha plots were used for each grazing system. In RG, plots were divided into four 0.5-ha paddocks that were grazed for 10 days each at a moderate stocking rate. Instead, CG sheep grazed the whole plots throughout the entire grazing season. At the beginning of every month, dOM was estimated from faecal crude protein concentration. Faeces excretion was determined using titanium dioxide in six sheep per plot. The animals were weighed every month to determine their LWG. Across the years, herbage mass did not differ between systems (p = 0.820). However, dOM, OMI and LWG were lower in RG than in CG (p ≤ 0.005). Thus, our study showed that RG does not improve herbage growth, feed intake and performance of sheep and suggests that stocking rates rather than management system determine the ecological sustainability of pastoral livestock systems in semi-arid environments.  相似文献

The effect on the pasture contamination level with infective trichostrongylid larvae by feeding the nematode-trapping fungus, Duddingtonia flagrans at two dose levels to first time grazing calves was examined in Lithuania. Thirty heifer-calves, aged 3-6 months, were divided into three comparable groups, A, B and C. Each group was turned out on a 1.07 ha paddock (a, b and c). The paddocks were naturally contaminated with infective trichostrongylid larvae from infected cattle grazing the previous year. Fungal material was fed to the animals daily during a two month period starting 3 weeks after turnout. Groups A and B were given 10(6) and 2.5x10(5) chlamydospores per kg of live weight per day, respectively, while group C served as a non-dosed control group. Every two weeks the heifers were weighed and clinically inspected. On the same dates, faeces, blood and grass samples were collected. From mid-July onwards, the number of infective larvae in grass samples increased markedly (P<0.05)on paddock c, whereas low numbers of infective larvae were observed on paddocks a and b grazed by the fungus treated groups. However, the results indicate that administering fungal spores at a dose of 2.5x10(6)chlamydospores per kg live weight per day did not significantly prevent parasitism in calves, presumably due to insufficient suppression of developing infective larvae in the faeces. In contrast, a dose of 10(6) chlamydospores per kg lowered the parasite larval population on the pasture, reduced pepsinogen levels (P<0.05), and prevented calves from developing parasitosis.  相似文献

In the Inner Mongolian steppe, China, sheep generally graze during daytime and are kept in yards overnight. Hence, nutrients are not returned to the grassland, which might reduce its long-term productivity. Furthermore, the restricted grazing time may limit forage intake and thus the performance of sheep. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the impact of continuous 24-h grazing (CG) v. the common daytime grazing (DG) on herbage mass (HM), feed quality, feed organic matter intake (OMI) and live weight gain (LWG) of sheep in the Inner Mongolian steppe. Experiments were carried out from July to September, between 2005 and 2007 on two 2-ha plots per grazing treatment. Each month, the external faecal marker titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) was orally administered to six sheep per plot on 10 consecutive days. Faecal grab samples were obtained from day 6 to 10 and analysed for CP concentrations to estimate digestibility of organic matter (dOM). Faecal TiO(2) concentrations were used to determine the total faecal output and hence OMI of sheep. Concomitant to faeces collection, HM and quality, as well as LWG of the animals were measured. HM and herbage quality did not differ between treatments. However, as the season progressed, concentrations of NDF, ADF and ADL increased, whereas HM and CP concentrations declined. HM and herbage quality parameters differed between years according to the annual precipitation. dOM was similar in CG (0.577) and DG (0.572) sheep, but it decreased from July (0.583) to September (0.558) and differed between years. Accordingly, the OMI of sheep was similar for both treatments across the entire grazing season and all study years. Although mean LWG differed between months and years, it was identical in CG (101.5 g/day) and DG sheep (101.8 g/day). Additional time on pasture during night does not increase feed intake or animal performance. Positive effects of a nutrient reflux on grassland productivity and herbage quality when animals remained on the plots overnight were not found, most likely because of the fact that sheep crowded together in one corner of the plots during darkness and faecal and urinary excretions were thus not evenly distributed across the entire pasture. Considering the risk of animal theft as well as the importance of sheep manure as fuel, the common penning of sheep at night seems to be an adequate management practice for pastoralists in the Inner Mongolian steppe.  相似文献

The peri-parturient period is crucial for controlling worms as the acquired immunity of ewes is disrupted, resulting in an increase in faecal worm egg counts. Two hypotheses were tested in this experiment - that ewes bred for worm resistance would have lower faecal worm egg counts than unselected control ewes, during late pregnancy and lactation, under similar but separate grazing areas; and also that numbers of infective nematode larvae would be lower on pastures grazed by resistant ewes than pastures grazed by unselected control ewes. Faecal samples were collected from resistant and unselected ewes in late pregnancy and early lactation, during the winter rainfall season, and analysed for numbers of Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Teladorsagia circumcincta. Pasture samples were taken 1 week before and 7 weeks after lambing started and analysed for infective larvae. In all sheep, worm egg counts rose 2 weeks prior to lambing and continued into lactation. Worm egg counts were significantly lower in the resistant ewes from 1 week before lambing to 2 weeks after lambing. There were no differences in egg counts between single- and twin-bearing ewes in the resistant line. However, twin-bearing control ewes had significantly higher egg counts than single-bearing control ewes. Following lactation, plots grazed by resistant ewes had substantially less contamination with T. colubriformis larvae, but there were no differences in numbers of T. circumcincta larvae. Our results demonstrate that sheep bred for worm resistance has lower worm burdens during the peri-parturient phase and that lambs born to resistant ewes face a lower larval challenge during their introduction to grazing. In our environment, selection for low worm egg counts has produced sheep highly resistant to T. colubriformis, but has had less impact on resistance towards T. circumcincta.  相似文献

Although stocking rate is a key management variable influencing the structure and composition of pastures, only few studies have simultaneously analysed the seasonal patterns of pasture use by cattle, and the adjustments the animals make to maintain intake of a high-quality diet over the grazing season. Therefore, over a 3-year study, we recorded diet selection, plot use and impact of heifers on sward structure and quality under three different stocking rates (0.6, 1.0 and 1.4 livestock units (LU) per ha) in a species-rich mountain pasture of central France. Measurements were made on three occasions between early June and the end of September each year. Overall, heifers selected for bites dominated by legumes or forbs, and against reproductive grass, whatever the stocking rate or season. Selection for tall mixed (P < 0.05), short mixed (P < 0.05) and short pure grass bites (P < 0.01) was more pronounced in plots grazed at the lowest stocking rate. Although heifers' selection for short patches decreased at the end of the season (P < 0.001), they continued to graze previously grazed areas, thus exhibiting a typical 'patch grazing' pattern, with the animals that grazed at the lowest stocking rate tending to better maintain their selection for short patches in September (treatment × period: P = 0.078). Neither diet quality nor individual animal performance were affected by the different stocking rate treatments despite high variability in the quantity and quality of herbage offered and differences in diet selection. However, at the 1.4 LU per ha stocking rate, the quantity of forage available per animal at the end of the season, 0.79 t dry matter (DM) per ha of green leaves with the median of sward height at 4.6 cm, approached levels limiting cattle's ability to compensate for the effects of increasing stocking rate. In plots grazed at 0.6 LU per ha, the total herbage biomass remained higher than 3 t DM per ha with more than 30% of plot area still covered by reproductive grass patches at the end of the grazing season, which in the medium term should affect the botanical composition of these pastures. Sward heterogeneity was high in plots grazed at 1.0 LU per ha, with sufficient herbage availability (1.1 t DM per ha of green leaves) to maintain animal performance, and more than 15% of plot area was kept at a reproductive stage at the end of the grazing season. Hence, it could represent the optimal balance to satisfy both livestock production and conservation management objectives.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the consequences of short-term grazing on bioactive forages on (i) the viability and fecundity of established adult Teladorsagia circumcincta population and (ii) the establishment and development of incoming T. circumcincta infective larvae. Forty-eight, parasite naive, 3-month old, grazing lambs were artificially infected with 8000 infective larvae of T. circumcincta on day 1 of the experiment. On day 21 p.i., lambs were allocated to one of three bioactive forage grazing treatments; chicory (Cichorium intybus), sulla (Hedysarum coronarium), lotus (Lotus pedunculatus), and the control grass/clover (Lolium perenne/Trifolium repens) forage. On day 28 of the experiment a second dose of 8000 T. circumcincta infective larvae was administered to the lambs to investigate the effects of forages on the ability of infective larvae to establish within the host. All animals were slaughtered for worm recovery on day 35, while liveweight gain, feacal egg counts (FEC) and total worm egg output were monitored regularly throughout the experiment. Although FEC or total egg output were similar among the groups, adult worm burdens at slaughter were significantly affected (P<0.05) by forage treatment during the 2 week grazing period. Lambs grazing chicory had the lowest adult worm burdens and significantly lower numbers of male worms compared to those grazing on grass/clover (P<0.01), while the lambs grazing on sulla or lotus had similar adult populations to grass/clover fed animals. The results from the worm recoveries of the second dose (immature worm burdens) were affected by physiologically and/or immunologically mediated mechanisms, which reduced larval establishment in all treatments. Nevertheless, immature worm burdens at slaughter were similar between chicory, sulla and grass/clover group, while the immature worm recoveries from the lotus group were significantly higher (P<0.05) compared to those from lambs grazing grass/clover. Overall, the results of the present study support the view that chicory can be a promising candidate species in pasture management practices to control T. circumcincta burdens.  相似文献

Epidemiology of ruminant helminths is the foundation on which strategic parasite control programmes are designed. Without this information one is not able to use anthelmintics to provide the optimal benefits for controlling both the adult worm and the pasture larval populations. The absence of strategic programmes generally results in using anthelmintics at the convenience of the producer, which may have little if any impact on parasite populations. The design of a strategic parasite control programme requires a knowledge of the dynamics of egg shedding from the host and the resulting pasture larval populations. It is important to know if larvae are available when animals are turned out onto pasture, when larval populations reach their maximal numbers and when they are induced to become hypobiotic. The goal is to keep pasture larval populations as low as possible. The use of pasture rotation adds another dimension to control programmes. The longer a pasture is allowed to remain fallow, the lower the pasture larval burden will be when it is grazed next. However, when we use intensive rotational grazing, animals may return to the pasture about 28 days later, when the larvae resulting from the eggs shed in the previous grazing are infective. This practice forces cattle to eat all of the forage available, including the grass closest to the faecal pat, where most of the infective larvae are available. If we treated cattle before turning them onto a clean rotationally grazed pasture, we should be able to control parasitism. Using a long-acting anthelmintic should enhance helminth control in rotationally grazed pastures and actually help to clean the pastures. Another grazing management practice is to alternately graze different species. This programme with the strategic use of anthelmintics should reduce parasitism in both host species.  相似文献

In heterogeneous pastures, groups of sheep may have to alter their social behaviour in order to graze patches of preferred vegetation. In this event, patch size, inter-patch distance and the contrast between patch and background vegetation are likely to affect behaviour. In this experiment, groups of five female Scottish Blackface sheep grazed for 2-h periods in 0.1ha grass plots containing seven 1.5mx1.5m patches of improved vegetation, with inter-patch distances of 1.5, 6 or 11.5m. Background vegetation was of either medium or poor quality. Control plots contained no patches. On average, sheep spent 44% of the time grazing patches, although patches comprised only 1.6% of the total plot area. Inter-patch distance did not affect accumulated time spent grazing patches during the first 30min, but patch residence time and the number of sheep on a patch increased with inter-patch distance. The distribution of nearest neighbour distances was altered when patches were 6 or 11.5m apart, compared to no patches. Accumulated time spent grazing patches and the number of sheep on a patch were greater with poor than medium backgrounds. Sheep visited patches frequently and for short periods and it is suggested that sheep often moved off patches as a result of competition. The results provide evidence that sheep make trade-offs between social and foraging behaviour and demonstrate the importance of interactions between social spacing and the size and spacing of vegetation patches, when sheep forage in heterogeneous pastures.  相似文献

The annual herbage dry matter yield, herbage P concentrations and quantities of P, K, Mg and Ca cycled by grazing sheep were calculated for a 37 year-old grazed pasture supplied with superphosphate at rates of 0, 188 and 376 kg ha-1 annually. The amount and distribution of inorganic and organic P and exchangeable K, Mg and Ca in the soil below the three grazed treatments was also measured and compared with that below a wilderness area which had not been used for agriculture. Increasing rates of superphosphate increased herbage dry matter yield, herbage P concentrations and thus the amounts of P ingested and, in turn, excreted by the grazing sheep. Annual quantities of K, Mg and Ca cycled back to the pasture in the form of excreta were also increased. The increased cycling of K by animals induced by increasing superphosphate applications resulted in greater losses of K and consequently concentrations of exchangeable and non-exchangeable ‘fixed’ K in soil decreased in the order wilderness > control > 188 > 376. Differences were evident to a depth of 20 cm. Some losses of Mg during cycling also occurred and concentrations of exchangeable Mg followed the order: wilderness > control >188=376. Concentrations of exchangeable Ca increased with pasture development due to additions of Ca in lime and superphosphate. Concentrations of total soil organic P (0–4 cm) increased in the order: wilderness < control <188<376 but for inorganic P and total P the control had a lower content than wilderness indicating losses of P during cycling in the grazed control treatment. Phosphorus fractionation suggested that with increasing superphosphate rates inorganic P primarily accumulated in a form adsorbed to Al hydrous oxides and as calcium phosphate compounds whilst organic P accumulated in both labile forms and forms associated with humic compounds. In the fertilised sites both inorganic and organic P accumulated in the soil profile to a depth of 20 cm.  相似文献

Faecal egg outputs and subsequent herbage larval contamination with third stage larvae (L3) of Ostertagia spp. and Oesophagostomum spp. from a herd of naturally infected sika deer Cervus nippon were examined in the same pasture in 2001/2002 in Lithuania. Sika deer were infected with Ostertagia circumcincta, O. kolchida, O. spiculoptera, Oesophagostomum radiatum, O. columbianum and O. venulosum. Faecal egg output in adult deer peaked in the spring during the periparturient period and also in late August, compared with a peak in egg output in calves during September to November. Herbage contamination with L3 of Ostertagia spp. peaked in June but larvae were not present on pastures from the end of September. Hence the highest risk of infection was in early born calves grazed on pastures in July. Infective larvae of Oesophagostomum spp. did not survive during the winter, but the nematodes were reintroduced onto the pastures by adult deer in the spring.  相似文献

Five complimentary studies were undertaken with the overall aim to examine the ability of free-living stages of Haemonchus contortus to over-winter and tolerate cold stress. Two studies deal with the development and long-term survival of eggs and infective larvae of two geographically different isolates (Kenya and Sweden). Eggs and larvae were monitored in climatic chambers at temperatures that fluctuated daily between -1 degrees C and 15 degrees C, or at constant temperatures of 5 degrees C and 15 degrees C. The development from egg to larvae was dependent on temperatures over 5 degrees C. The long time survival was favoured at lower temperatures. Furthermore, the overwintering capacity of the free-living stages of these isolates was estimated under Swedish field conditions. Two groups of lambs were experimentally infected with different isolates, and kept separated on previously ungrazed plots. In early May the following year, two parasite-naive tracer lambs were turned out on each of the plots to estimate the pick up of overwintered larvae. This experiment was replicated in central and southern Sweden. In addition, two experiments were performed in 2003 on pasture previously grazed by naturally infected sheep. One trial was on a pasture in southern Sweden grazed by a commercial flock, where extreme numbers of H. contortus were found towards the end of the grazing season 2002. The other study was on a pasture plot in central Sweden grazed by a hobby flock in 2002, where three of six lambs died due to haemonchiasis. Overwintered H. contortus was recorded on three of four experimental sites. Worm burdens were in all instances extremely low. No differences in development and survival were found between the isolates. Consequently, overwintering on pasture is of no practical significance in the transmission of H. contortus between grazing-seasons in Sweden.  相似文献

Between December and June, six paddocks that had been contaminated naturally with infective larvae of nematode parasites of cattle, were each subjected to one of six grazing treatments. The effects of these treatments on the infectivity of the pastures were assessed by slaughter and total worm counts of calves which subsequently grazed the paddocks, and by counts of larvae on pasture samples. Grazing by sheep during autumn resulted in reduced populations of Ostertagia ostertagi and Trichostrongylus axei, both in calves and on the pasture for up to 12 months after treatment. Similar effects were noted on pasture grazed by cattle repeatedly dosed with anthelmintics, and on ungrazed pasture. There was little effect of any treatment on numbers of Cooperia oncophora. It was concluded that the level of autumn contamination was of importance in determining the numbers of O. ostertagi in the following spring and summer.  相似文献

Wild ungulates often adjust spatial behaviour where they coexist with livestock. In European mountains, chamois Rupicapra rupicapra or R. pyrenaica commonly avoid alpine pastures used by domestic sheep. Mechanisms leading to competitive losing out of the wild species are not well understood, but mostly, resource competition is inferred and sometimes demonstrated. We hypothesised that chamois need to minimise the risk of intestinal parasite uptake and therefore would avoid pastures contaminated with sheep dung. We tested this in two experiments by contaminating feeding patches of wild and captive chamois with (parasite-free) sheep faeces. Wild chamois did not avoid grazing sites or plots on which sheep dung had been placed at a (low) density representing the commonly encountered situation in the Swiss Alps. Captive chamois strongly reduced browsing time on small trees given for food when the surroundings of the trees were sprayed with a watery faecal solution. We concluded that the odour signalled a potential high risk of parasite infection to the captive chamois, whereas the density of sheep dung on the grazing site of wild chamois was not high enough to be perceived as a risk. The need to minimise endoparasite uptake from faeces may therefore play a role in driving spatial behaviour of wild ungulates and could result in competitive imbalance between wild and domestic ungulates.  相似文献

The development and survival of free-living stages of gastro-intestinal nematodes of small ruminants are influenced by several abiotic and biotic factors. Within the abiotic factors, most important are the environmental temperature and humidity. They regulate the development of larvae from eggs dispersed on the pasture by the animals faeces. Each parasite species that infect ruminants requires a different time to development, depending on temperature and humidity. Among trichostrongylids, Ostertagia, Teladorsagia and Nematodirus show a strong adaptation to low temperatures. Nematodirus larvae are able to survive to winter inside the egg shell. Temperature and humidity influence the distribution and survival of larvae on pasture. The larval third stage can migrate from faeces to pasture vegetation and they accumulate at the basis of vegetation where stay during the day or in the soil to avoid the desiccation. The forage species affects the migration of larvae on herbage too. Many biological factors contribute to disperse the larvae on the pasture. Dung burying beetles, coprophagous beetles and earthworms can greatly reduce the larvae of some trichostrongylids on pasture. They contribute to the spread of the faecal material on the pasture and allow the larval death as a consequence of drying.  相似文献

Lambs born in pens with slatted floor were brought out at 2–5 weeks of age on pastures heavily grazed by sheep the previous years. About 16 days later the oocyst output of the lambs rapidly increased to high levels. Lambs on pastures which never had been grazed by sheep earlier, had moderate oocyst counts. Between 11 and 25 days after the beginning of grazing there were significantly more lambs with diarrhoea on permanent pastures compared with pastures never grazed by sheep earlier. It was found that lambs were heavily infected during the first 2 days on permanent pastures. Thirteen housed lambs were given 10–50 g of soil from a permanent pasture as a water suspension by a stomach tube. Fifteen days later there was a steep rise in the oocyst output in most of them, and 11 of the 13 lambs developed diarrhoea and 2 died. None of 10 lambs given uninfected soil and none of 12 untreated controls showed diarrhoea and the oocyst output remained on a moderate level. It is concluded that oocysts which have survived the winter in the pasture are the main source of infection with Eimeria spp. in lambs with this kind of management. Soil-eating is the most likely source of infection during the first days on pasture.  相似文献

Weaner sheep that had been hand-fed on diets containing increasing concentrations of protein for a 9-week period (when uninfected, or infected with Haemonchus contortus) were studied during the next 69 weeks when put on to pasture as a single, unsupplemented flock. During the 9-week period, groups of 12 sheep (six infected, six uninfected) were offered one of five iso-energetic (9.0 MJ kg(-1)) diets containing 10, 13, 16, 19 or 22% crude protein. All sheep were treated with anthelmintic at the end of the 9 weeks and then put out to pasture for 69 weeks, where they were all subject to the same environmental variables including nematode larval challenge. During the grazing period, animals that had previously received the higher protein diets consistently had higher live-weight gain and wool production, higher antibody responses to both H. contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis antigenic challenge in vitro, and lower faecal nematode egg counts than did the lambs previously offered the lower protein diets. Faecal egg counts of the grazing sheep that had been artificially infected with H. contortus while being hand-fed were similar to those of the uninfected sheep and there was no interaction between previous infection and dietary protein concentration. We conclude that short periods of enhanced post-weaning nutrition can have long-term and perhaps life-long effects on production.  相似文献

Foraging host individuals can defend against fecal–orally transmitted parasites by avoiding feces‐contaminated patches, which has been widely documented among ungulates. However, it remains unclear whether smaller‐sized hosts (e.g., mice), with their high metabolism and constant needs for energy acquisition, can afford the same behavioral strategy. In this study, we used laboratory and field experiments to test whether feces‐contaminated patches are avoided by the Taiwan field mice Apodemus semotus. In the laboratory experiment, wild‐caught mice whose parasitic infection was not manipulated were given two options to forage from feces‐contaminated and uncontaminated patches. These naturally infected mice spent less time in feces‐contaminated than uncontaminated patches. In the field experiment, we reduced gastrointestinal parasite load of randomly chosen mice via anthelmintic treatment. Whereas the untreated mice did not discriminate among food patches with different levels of parasitism risk (i.e., high‐ or low‐risk patches containing conspecific feces of high or low parasite egg counts, no‐feces patches containing no feces), the treated mice spent less time in feces‐contaminated patches than in no‐feces patches. Similar to the larger‐sized ungulates, we demonstrated here that small mammals can also exhibit fecal‐avoidance foraging. Furthermore, such behavior may be influenced by both environmental parasitism risk and host infection status, which has implications in host–parasite transmission dynamics, namely the selective use of uncontaminated patches by the less‐infected (treated) mice may drive parasites to aggregate within the infected portion of a host population.  相似文献

When cultured alone or concurrently with Trichostrongylus colubriformis in sheep faeces, Ostertagia circumcincta produced fewer infective larvae per 100 eggs than did T. colubriformis. Averaged over five trials 60% of T. colubriformis eggs were recovered as infective larvae while for O. circumcincta the figure was only 39%. This result was observed for two strains of O. circumcincta and was independent of when larvae were harvested from culture (days 6-10 at 25 degrees C). The mortalities of both species occurred at the first and second larval stages. These observations are of concern when using larval differentiation from faecal culture to make quantitative estimates of worm egg numbers for each species present. Species such as T. colubriformis which have a low mortality during culture are likely to have their egg numbers overestimated when cultured with a species, like O. circumcincta, that suffers high mortality in culture.
