The acanthocephalan parasite, Corynosoma enhydri, uses sea otters (Enhydra lutris) as definitive host. Despite high prevalence and abundance in southern sea otters (E. l. nereis), sublethal impacts of infection on otter health are unknown. Parasites are an integral part of ecosystem structure and functioning. Many affect host behavior, reproduction, predation, or prey preference. Parasites can suppress host immune response, facilitate secondary bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections, and influence concurrent microbial infection. Acanthocephalan infections can have significant effects on host metabolism, digestion, nutrient absorption, and energetics. Because high metabolic expenditures and resource limitations are known to affect southern sea otter populations, even subtle effects of infection could negatively impact individual health and population recovery. In this review we summarize reports of host–parasite-environmental interactions for helminth infections and discuss how these same attributes could manifest in southern sea otters and coastal food web dynamics. Based on these data, investigation of potential sublethal impacts of C. enhydri is warranted. We recommend expanding understanding of the significance of parasites in marine ecosystems beyond associated mortality. Future investigation into the ecological implications of sublethal effects are essential to fully grasp parasite impacts on host populations, and predict potential additive effects with climate change in ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

  • 1.1. The carotenoids of S. dröbachiensis ovaries and eggs were echinenone, β-carotene, zeaxanthin, isocryptoxanthin, and small amounts of a fucoxanthin isomer. The major carotenoids of the gut wall and gut contents were fucoxanthin, mainly isomerized, β-carotene and zeaxanthin. Echinenone was detectable but isocryptoxanthin was not.
  • 2.2. Seasonal variation in ovarian carotenoids was studied. Echinenone constituted between 79 and 85% of the total, except in spawned out ovaries where it fell to 50%, reflecting preferential incorporation of echinenone into eggs.
  • 3.3. Evidence is presented for the synthesis of echinenone from β-carotene via isocryptoxanthin in the ovary rather than in the gut wall.
  • 4.4. The possible significance of the degree of oxidation of animal carotenoids is discussed briefly.

The most dramatic gradient in global biodiversity is between marine and terrestrial environments. Terrestrial environments contain approximately 75-85% of all estimated species, but occupy only 30 per cent of the Earth's surface (and only approx. 1-10% by volume), whereas marine environments occupy a larger area and volume, but have a smaller fraction of Earth's estimated diversity. Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain this disparity, but there have been few large-scale quantitative tests. Here, we analyse patterns of diversity in actinopterygian (ray-finned) fishes, the most species-rich clade of marine vertebrates, containing 96 per cent of fish species. Despite the much greater area and productivity of marine environments, actinopterygian richness is similar in freshwater and marine habitats (15 150 versus 14 740 species). Net diversification rates (speciation-extinction) are similar in predominantly freshwater and saltwater clades. Both habitats are dominated by two hyperdiverse but relatively recent clades (Ostariophysi and Percomorpha). Remarkably, trait reconstructions (for both living and fossil taxa) suggest that all extant marine actinopterygians were derived from a freshwater ancestor, indicating a role for ancient extinction in explaining low marine richness. Finally, by analysing an entirely aquatic group, we are able to better sort among potential hypotheses for explaining the paradoxically low diversity of marine environments.  相似文献

ESS models of biological signaling have shown that costly signals can provide honest information. In the context of parent-offspring conflict over the allocation of resources by parents to their young, the theory explains costly offspring solicitation behavior as an accurate signal of offspring need to parents who cannot assess offspring condition directly. In this paper, we provide a simple but general characterization of the honest signaling of need in models of parent-offspring conflict: the offspring's signaling cost is proportional to the parent's fitness loss from satisfying the offspring's resource requirement. The factor of proportionality is given by a measure of the extent of parent-offspring conflict that depends only on coefficients of relatedness. These results hold for interbrood conflict with uniparental investment even if the relationship between offspring condition and resource requirement is not monotonic, and extend to cases of biparental care, uncertainty concerning the parent's condition, and intra-brood conflict. Gaia theory, which describes the life-environment system of the Earth as stable and self-regulating, has remained at the fringes of mainstream biological science owing to its historically inadequate definition and apparent incompatibility with individual-level natural selection. The key issue is whether and why the biosphere might tend towards stability and self-regulation. We review the various ways in which these issues have been addressed by evolutionary and ecological theory, and relate these to 'Gaia theory'. We then ask how this theory extends the perspectives offered by these disciplines, and how it might be tested by novel modelling approaches and laboratory experiments using emergent technologies.  相似文献

Abstract

The Group of 77 favors the establishment of a strong International Sea‐Bed Authority with powers to regulate and control all the activities of exploration and exploitation of the “common heritage of mankind,”; referred to in the draft articles as “the Area.”; The Authority itself is to be composed of an Assembly as the supreme policy‐making organ in which the Contracting Parties are to be represented on the basis of sovereign equality; a Council as the executive organ implementing the policies emanating from the Assembly, to be composed of at least 36 states elected to ensure representation of clearly defined special interests and the principle of equitable geographical distribution, and to eschew any form of veto mechanism in its decision‐making process; the Enterprise as the operational organ through which the Authority is to undertake direct exploitation of the Area along with the other entities given access to the Area; and a Secretariat as well as certain subsidiary bodies of the Council.

The Group of 77 takes the position that the Convention itself and the Basic Conditions governing the entire process of exploration and exploitation of the Area must leave the Authority an appreciable margin of discretion in managing the Area for the benefit of mankind as a whole. Thus, a limited category of judicially reviewable decisions of the Authority is envisaged so long as such review does not challenge the legislative powers and resource policy decisions of the Authority. A Sea‐Bed Tribunal is no longer necessary as an organ of the Authority, since the work of such a Tribunal could be done by the special Sea‐Bed Disputes Chamber of the Proposed Law of the Sea Tribunal dealing with disputes arising under the Convention as a whole.  相似文献

The ciliary band is a distinct region of embryonic ectoderm that is specified between oral and aboral ectoderm. Flask-shaped ciliary cells and neurons differentiate in this region and they are patterned to form an integrated tissue that functions as the principal swimming and feeding organ of the larva. TGFβ signaling, which is known to mediate oral and aboral patterning of the ectoderm, has been implicated in ciliary band formation. We have used morpholino knockdown and ectopic expression of RNA to alter TGFβ signaling at the level of ligands, receptors, and signal transduction components and assessed the differentiation and patterning of the ciliary band cells and associated neurons. We propose that the primary effects of these signals are to position the ciliary cells, which in turn support neural differentiation. We show that Nodal signaling, which is known to be localized by Lefty, positions the oral margin of the ciliary band. Signaling from BMP through Alk3/6, affects the position of the oral and aboral margins of the ciliary band. Since both Nodal and BMP signaling produce ectoderm that does not support neurogenesis, we propose that formation of a ciliary band requires protection from these signals. Expression of BMP2/4 and Nodal suppress neural differentiation. However, the response to receptor knockdown or dominant-negative forms of signal transduction components indicate signaling is not acting directly on unspecified ectoderm cells to prevent their differentiation as neurons. Instead, it produces a restricted field of ciliary band cells that supports neurogenesis. We propose a model that incorporates spatially regulated control of Nodal and BMP signaling to determine the position and differentiation of the ciliary band, and subsequent neural patterning.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to examine patients in adolescent crisis at the beginning of treatment and after a period of 12 months in order to evaluate the relative diagnostic and therapeutic validity. The study included 153 Split University students in adolescent crisis; 90 of them were treated by counseling and 63 served as controls. For diagnosis, Hampstead index and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) multiaxial evaluation were used, allowing a wider insight into personal functioning. The study sample was split in 7 significantly different diagnostic subgroups. The counseling-treated examinees had better personality functioning after 12 months, but did not differ significantly from the control group. Some of their single functions were more severely disturbed at the very beginning. Counseling is a valuable therapeutic and diagnostic tool for adolescent crisis. The assessment must evaluate the entire person, because looking at only one aspect, due to different development and its place, a wrong conclusion may be reached. The "adolescents crisis" entity is clinically relevant.  相似文献

Why are there about 5000 species of phytoplankton in the sea?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The relative abundances of phytoplankton taxa conform approximatelyto a finite geometric series in which there are 20–25species per decade of ranked abundance. Such series can contain160–400 species between the commonest (1022–1026cells) and the rarest (1010–1014 cells). Thus, between12 and 31 such series are needed to explain the observed diversity,5x103 species, of marine phytoplankton. The number of seriesis similar to the number (20–25) of upper-ocean watermasses defined by dilution time scale of order 101–102years. Interpretations of this coincidence are discussed.  相似文献

Both isotopic and microelectrode studies reveal a significant Ca2+ influx at fertilization which if freely distributed in the cytoplasm would equal 1–2 × 10−5 M. The role, if any, of this influx is disputed. We have attempted to reevaluate contradictory findings by others on this role. Our results with Strongylocentrotus purpuratus and Lytechinus pictus eggs, assessing fertilization with acrosome-reacted sperm in EGTA-buffered media (free [Ca2+], 4.4 × 10−8 M) indicate that exogenous Ca2+ is not required for fertilization and subsequent cleavage. The contradictory findings by others may have resulted from reduced fertilizability in Ca2+-free seawater, which can be circumvented by higher sperm concentration and by a sensitivity to temperature in Ca2+-free medium, which can be bypassed by carrying out fertilization at lower temperature. Also consistent with the absence of a requirement for this Ca2+ influx, we found that Ca2+ uptake can be induced in eggs by depolarizing the membrane with high [K+], but there is no resultant activation of egg metabolism. Under our conditions for fertilization in Ca2+-free media, there is no effect on the block to polyspermy but the initiation of the cortical reaction may be delayed. The data support the hypothesis that sperm induce release of Ca2+ from intracellular stores, perhaps by affecting an equilibrium between Ca2+ sequestration and Ca2+ release.  相似文献

Aim of this study was to determine whether there are any differences between coastal and inland Dalmatia in incidence rates and clinical characteristics of thyroid cancer. Data on 651 persons who suffer from and have undergone surgery for thyroid cancer have been analysed. All patients lived in Dalmatia between 1997 and 2006. Data were collected via surveys, insight into medical histories and results of histopathological analysis. In Dalmatia, in the overall sample, there are no statistically significant differences in incidence between coastal and inland areas (chi2=3.03; df=1; p=0.082). Somewhat higher overall incidence has been recorded in the inland (8.5%000) than in the coastal Dalmatia (7.3%000). In the overall sample, in Dalmatia, women make up 81.4% of patients and papillary cancer accounts for 80.0% of all thyroid cancers. The ratio of papillary to folicullar cancer is 7.8:1 in coastal and 4.2:1 in inland Dalmatia. Papillary and medullary types are more common in the coastal area and follicular and anaplastic cancer types in the inland area and the differences are statistically significant (p>0.033). Epidemiological characteristics of thyroid cancer in coastal Dalmatia are in accordance with the characteristics of this cancer as described in iodine-sufficient areas: the most common type is papillary cancer, and the ratio of papillary to follicular is 7.8:1. Sex-wise, the coastal area records a higher ratio of male patients (1:3.8) than the inland area (1:7.1). There are no statistically significant differences in thyroid cancer incidence rates between coastal and inland Dalmatia. Epidemiological characteristics of thyroid cancer in inland Dalmatia are in some ways more similar to those of continental Croatia. This result could be the consequence of previous iodine insufficiency in inland Dalmatia.  相似文献

Abstract

The Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea is addressing problems that involve all of mankind. Yet there are parts of mankind, non‐independent states and special sovereignties, that are not directly represented at the conference, even though their interests will be directly affected by the decisions taken.

There currently arc around 75 non‐independent states and special sovereignties at different stages of political development and with varying forms of association to a metropolitan power. This can create problems of conflicting jurisdiction over ocean space in two areas particularily: the South Pacific and the Caribbean.

The Conference has attempted”; to deal with the problem of the Law of the Sea and non‐independent states in three ways: by granting observer status to national liberation movements and associated states; through the Transitional Provision; and through the Definitional and Final Clauses. However, a universal formula that would guarantee to these states the resource rights recognized in the proposed Treaty has yet to emerge.  相似文献
