We present a biologically motivated architecture for object recognition that is capable of online learning of several objects based on interaction with a human teacher. The system combines biological principles such as appearance-based representation in topographical feature detection hierarchies and context-driven transfer between different levels of object memory. Training can be performed in an unconstrained environment by presenting objects in front of a stereo camera system and labeling them by speech input. The learning is fully online and thus avoids an artificial separation of the interaction into training and test phases. We demonstrate the performance on a challenging ensemble of 50 objects.  相似文献

A small (2.5-cm-wide) vertical (10-cm-high) white object influenced the sex pheromone-mediated flight and landing behaviors of maleEpiphyas postvittana. When the vertical object was positioned on a horizontal surface to the side (3–5 cm) and upwind of a pheromone source (in the middle of the surface), the distribution of landing positions of males on the surface was different from that when the object was not present; males tended to land in positions skewed toward the side of the source that the object was on. The closer the object was positioned to the source, the greater the number of males that landed on the object (rather than on the horizontal surface). This difference in landing positions (when the object was present) corresponded with changes in the flight tracks; the tracks of males flying to the surface with an object were skewed toward the object and had higher amplitude intertrack reversal distances than the tracks of males flying to a surface without a vertical object. Positioning of a vertical object progressively upwind of the source resulted, apparently, in decreased effects on the landing (and presumably flight) behavior of males. The effect of the vertical object on the flight and landing behaviors of males corresponded largely with changes in pheromone plume structure (visualized with smoke) induced by the extra turbulence in the airflow over the source. Thus it appears that the vertical object influences the behavior of maleE. postvittana largely through the olfactory sensory modality. However, when a clear, Mylar object, in place of the white object, was placed on the surface, more males landed on the Mylar object (than did on the white object), suggesting that the vertical object may also influence the behavior of males through the visual modality.  相似文献

This study investigated attentional processes in a sample of captive gibbons. An initial aim of the research was to examine subjects' ability to co-orient with photographic images of both conspecific and human models. The gibbons' expectancies about the focus of another's attention was then also assessed, with an expectancy violation paradigm revealing subjects' sensitivity to an incompatibility between visual orientation and the position of a target object. The gibbons were exposed to two conditions; consistent sequences in which the stimulus individual directed attention towards a target object, and inconsistent sequences in which the model's attentional focus was incompatible with the location of this article. Analyses of the subjects' responses were made according to the direction of gazes and the time spent inspecting the depicted model in each of these conditions. The results reveal a tendency for visual co-orientation with both conspecific and human models, suggesting that gibbons are competent in detecting the visual orientation of other species as well as their own. Furthermore, the subjects' tendency to look longer and check back to the depicted model in response to violations in the relationship between an agent and object (target appearing in an opposite direction to model's gaze), suggests that they possess some knowledge of how visual gaze direction relates to external stimuli.  相似文献

Summary It was noticed that the blind Mexican Cave Fish repeatedly passes along objects new to it at a short distance. Observations and experiments are reported which support the hypothesis that water movements occurring between the stationary object and the fish as it passes by convey information about the location and possibly the shape of the object, which is detected by the lateral line organ of the fish. Water movements of the expected type were recorded with the help of a model fish equipped with a mechano-electric analogue of a free neuromast.This research was supported by DFG Grant Ca 34/4The technical devices were developed together with the master precision-instrument makers Mr. F. The sequential presentation of two distinct stimulus objects to the visual system will, under certain conditions, induce an apparentmotion effect, called beta motion, in which the first object appears to smoothly transform into the second. This study is concerned with the kinds of paths selected by the visual system in effecting beta motion in which the metric structure of the object is preserved throughout. Two schemes are advanced according to which the visual system might operate. The first concentrates upon the manifold M in which the object appears to transform and the second upon the group G of transformations of M onto itself in which the particular transformation describing this motion lie. Under the identification of M with the 2-sphere S 2, each scheme specifies the action-minimizing curves in the rotation group SO(3) for a particular “natural” Riemannian metric. An experiment is described in which a determination is made of the actual paths taken by an object under-going various rigid-motion beta motions. The results obtained indicate that the visual system behaves more in accordance with the second scheme than with the first. A generalization of this result is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Abstract  The palm pest Scapanes australis has been the object of considerable recent research to develop control measures that target male reproductive behaviour. This study investigated horn size scaling relationships and frequency distributions in two subspecies of S. australis for evidence of alternative male reproductive strategies. Indeed, a sigmoidal horn size allometry in both populations was detected as a significant vertical discontinuity by a piece-wise regression model, which indicates that distinct minor and major male phenotypes are expressed in both taxa. A non-linear regression algorithm showed that these subspecies differ significantly in two modelled parameters of horn allometry. A likelihood model was used for probabilistic discrimination of the alternative male phenotypes by estimating their ratios across the bimodal frequency distribution. The latter is intended to aid field investigation of the reproductive biology of S. australis by statistically discriminating the alternative male phenotypes on the basis of easily measured parameters in live samples.  相似文献

Over the last ten years the population of the Mediterranean island of Sardinia has been object of numerous studies in the fields of anthropology and population genetics. Its insularity, central position in the Mediterranean area and rich historical past have made the island a veritable laboratory for the study and understanding of those interacting evolutionary mechanisms which determine a population's genetic structure. Indeed, from work performed at different levels on genetic structure analysis there emerges an extremely complex picture of the relationships between Sardinian and other Italian and Mediterranean populations, but also of relationships within the Sardinian population itself The diversification from Mediterranean and Italian populations can be explained by Sardinia's historical and demographic past. Internal heterogeneity can be attributed, in part, to strict isolation and the accompanying high levels of endogamy and inbreeding, and in part to the endemic presence of malaria which exerted a strong selective pressure on some characteristics; determining, for example, the differentiation between the plains and the mountain areas. Finally, an influence on Sardinia's biological history not to be neglected could be attributed to the demographic events, which triggered off phenomena of genetic drift and to cultural factors.  相似文献

Social object play (SOP), i.e., social play using portable object(s), among young Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata; 0-4 years old) in the Arashiyama E troop was studied using a modified sequence sampling method from July to October 2000. SOP was a relatively common activity for most of the young macaques and often continued for long periods. Participants used many kinds of object, including edible natural objects and artificial objects, such as plastic bottles, but they never used provisioned food or wild fruit in SOP bouts. An analysis of long bouts (>/=0.5 min) revealed the following interactive SOP features: (1) at any given time, participants used only one object, and only one participant held the object; (2) during SOP play-chasing, the object holder was likely to be chased by others; (3) during long bouts, the object changed hands frequently; and (4) agonistic competition for an object among young macaques was rare. Combinations of sexes, ages, relative ranks, or matrilines of the object holder and non-holder did not affect the tendency that the holder was chased by non-holder(s) during play-chasing. Even when there was a change in object holders, the repetitiveness of this interactive pattern, i.e., that the holder would be chased during SOP bouts, distinguished the SOP structure from that of other types of social play without object(s). General proximate social play mechanisms, such as self-handicapping or role taking, were associated with SOP. Other mechanisms that affected SOP included the following: (1) young macaques treated an object as a target in play competition, and (2) 'being the holder of a target object' was associated with the 'role of the chasee.'  相似文献

Theoretical and simulational evidence, as well as experimental indications, are accumulating that quantum associative memory and imaging are possible. We compare these data with biological evidence, since we find them to a significant extent compatible. This paper presents a computationally implementable integrative model of appearance-based viewpoint-invariant recognition of objects. The neuro-quantum hybrid model incorporates neural processing up to V1 and quantum associative processing in V1, achieving together an object-recognition result in V2 and ITC. Results of our simulation of the central quantum-like parts of the bio-model, receiving neurally pre-processed inputs, are presented. This part contains our original simulated storage by multiple quantum interference of image-encoding Gabor wavelets done in a Hebbian way, especially using the Griniasty et al. pose-sequence learning rule.  相似文献

A detailed model for the crystal structure of the fibrous polysaccharide chitin is proposed. The structure determination has been carried out by using an optical analogue instrument which proved to be an adequate and rapid tool for the derivation of Fourier transforms, signs of amplitudes and the production of optical Fourier syntheses. The new model of chitin accounts properly for known chemical and physical properties, including the infrared absorption as well as for x-ray data, but because of the limited resolution of the diffraction patterns it can only be regarded as a good approximation. The stereochemical configuration of the polysaccharide chains has certain implications for the structure of cellulose.  相似文献

Summary Organisms react to objective properties of bodies in their visual field instead of to the perpetually changing retinal images of those bodies. We show how such a faculty can be mechanized. The organism synthesizes an internal model of the external object, that is a bundle of expectations of how the visual input will transform in response to the organism's exploratory movements. We deduce the necessary structure of the internal model and we show how the organism can extract this structure from the invariant features of the sensory input transformations. With this internal model it is possible to predict the subsequent aspects (contours) of the visual object as the spatial relations of organism and object change.  相似文献

Two male Japanese monkeys were trained to use a mirror to reach an object that could not be seen directly. Training to use a mirror in this way proceeded, step-by-step, from reaching a piece of apple to key-tracking. In Experiment 1 the monkeys were trained to use the mirror to locate a desired object, a piece of apple in a box facing the mirror, which could be seen only by looking into the mirror. The apple, once located, however, could be grasped without further reference to the mirror. This behavior is referred to as mirror mediated object discrimination. In subsequent experiments the monkeys could not reach the goal object except by observing it and his hand movement in the mirror. In Experiment 2 the target was a piece of apple visible in the mirror, in Experiment 3 an illuminated key and in Experiment 4 a series of keys which were illuminated sequentially. Mirror guided behavior such as shown in Experiment 2, 3, and 4 has not previously been demonstrated in monkeys.  相似文献

The plasma membrane dose-dependent damage of UV(B)-irradiated mouse peritoneal macrophages was investigated using laser interference microscopy (LIM). LIM is a method which allows one to estimate morphological and functional parameters of a cell without dyeing or introduction of other substances which can affect the cell condition. This makes it possible to reduce and accelerate the procedure of counting the damaged cells as compared with the methods using different dyes. The value of optical path difference (OPD)--a variable proportional to the object thickness and the difference in the refractive indices of the object and the surrounding medium was used for estimation of the cell damage. Also compared was usability of LIM and microfluorimetry assay in investigations of the UV(B)-irradiated macrophage plasma membrane.  相似文献

Harmothoë imbricata is able to locate sources of vibration in the water and this response is an important part of the animal's prey‐capture mechanism. Animals having either palps, tentacular cirri, dorsal cirri or ventral cirri intact are able to locate a source of vibrations successfully. If none of these types of sensory appendage remain intact then the animals are unresponsive until regeneration of the appendages has occurred. The structure of the sensory appendages and the types of sensory endings which they carry have been described. After an object has been located there is a period of contact exploration by the animal's palps. The palps provide the animal with chemical information as to whether the object is suitable as prey and also about its exact position relative to the animal. Attack involves the rapid eversion of the proboscis which has four terminal jaws. The vibration source location response disappears after an animal has fed to satiation.  相似文献

We recorded the responses of the members of a captive group of wedge-capped capuchins to novel and familiar objects placed in different parts of their cage in a study of the spatial dependency of activity with objects. We focused on behavioral pattern variability across subjects and across object location. Results show that, according to the location of the object, a great deal of within-subject response variability exists. The dominant male was slow to interact physically with objects and presented social-like behaviors—essentially grooming—towards objects in only one site. Implicit to the ethological approach is the assumption that consistent spatial location is irrelevant or, at best, of little importance to the definition of stimuli. Nevertheless, stimuli would be best considered as perturbations insofar as the significance of an object or event depends on where and when it is encountered. In order to evaluate how monkey cognition operates, it seems essential to investigate the role of the primate's own spatial structure. As a working hypothesis, we introduce the processes of spatial facilitation and inhibition and suggest that they affect how an individual interacts with objects and events.  相似文献

Syntax use by non-human animals remains a controversial issue. We present here evidence that a dog may respond to verbal requests composed of two independent terms, one referring to an object and the other to an action to be performed relative to the object. A female mongrel dog, Sofia, was initially trained to respond to action (point and fetch) and object (ball, key, stick, bottle and bear) terms which were then presented as simultaneous, combinatorial requests (e.g. ball fetch, stick point). Sofia successfully responded to object-action requests presented as single sentences, and was able to flexibly generalize her performance across different contexts. These results provide empirical evidence that dogs are able to extract the information contained in complex messages and to integrate it in directed performance, an ability which is shared with other linguistically trained animals and may represent a forerunner of syntactic functioning.  相似文献

DNA (cytosine-5-)-methyltransferase was purified as a single polypeptide (190 kDa by SDS-PAGE) from mouse P815 mastocytoma cells. This enzyme transfers methyl groups to unmethylated as well as to hemimethylated DNA sites with a strong preference for the hemimethylated substrate. A structural analysis of the isolated enzyme by electron microscopical techniques was undertaken. On the basis of the results obtained, we propose a model for the enzyme structure. This model describes the enzyme as a hemi-elliptical globular structure with dimensions of 5.4-6.7 nm for the height h and 10.3-10.8 nm for the diameter d, respectively; this globular structure bears a small appendix at the flat side. A molecular mass of 235-250 kDa is calculated from the measured dimensions. Limited trypsin digestion of the enzyme led to a 160-kDa fragment which preserved the gross morphology of the original material. The possible structure function relationships are discussed.  相似文献

The Joint Model of the Contractile System of Muscle is a theoretical construction and the question is whether it may express adequately some aspects of the biological original. In addition to the previous results which presented preliminary calculations, simulation experiments have been performed with a dynamic version of the model. The relations found between the variables studied (length, shortening velocity, isotonic contraction load, shortening heat production rate and excess of effective activity), did not essentially differ from those established by preliminary calculations; the choice of appropriate parameter values and the introduction of some additional features in the system made it possible to obtain a better approximation of relations known from measurements on the biological object. The model discloses some relevant general aspects of the contractile system of "independent" generators of force and thus contributes to a specification of the relationships between molecular and macroscopic levels of contraction phenomena. Future development or correction of the concepts under consideration depend on more suitable empirical data and further simulation experiments.  相似文献

Dynamic touching is effortful touching. It entails deformation of muscles and fascia and activation of the embedded mechanoreceptors, as when an object is supported and moved by the body. It is realized as exploratory activities that can vary widely in spatial and temporal extents (a momentary heft, an extended walk). Research has revealed the potential of dynamic touching for obtaining non-visual information about the body (e.g. limb orientation), attachments to the body (e.g. an object's height and width) and the relation of the body both to attachments (e.g. hand's location on a grasped object) and surrounding surfaces (e.g. places and their distances). Invariants over the exploratory activity (e.g. moments of a wielded object's mass distribution) seem to ground this 'information about'. The conception of a haptic medium as a nested tensegrity structure has been proposed to express the obtained information realized by myofascia deformation, by its invariants and transformations. The tensegrity proposal rationalizes the relative indifference of dynamic touch to the site of mechanical contact (hand, foot, torso or probe) and the overtness of exploratory activity. It also provides a framework for dynamic touching's fractal nature, and the finding that its degree of fractality may matter to its accomplishments.  相似文献
