The morphology of vitellogenic oocytes and the batch fecundity of five tropical forage species belonging to the family Characidae, were studied in 104 late‐maturing ovaries. Significant morphological differences between vitellogenic oocytes and ovarian follicles were found. The lowest batch fecundity values were recorded in Hemigrammus marginatus (480 ± 163) and Orthospinus franciscensis (1701 ± 562), which were the smaller species in terms of total length, body weight and oocyte diameter. The highest batch fecundity value was observed in Tetragonopterus chalceus (8384 ± 3944) having the highest GSI and oocyte diameter. Batch fecundity and gonad weight was highly correlated followed by body weight and total length. Relative fecundity was estimated per unit total length, body weight and gonad weight. The wide variation in fecundity observed between the specimens and the species analysed is possibly related to the multiple spawning reproductive strategy of these fishes. Since T. chalceus have higher values of batch and relative fecundity, it is concluded that this species has a higher reproductive potential than the other forage species studied.  相似文献

Variation in fecundity and other reproductive traits in freshwater mussels   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. Life histories of the highly diverse and endangered North American freshwater mussel fauna are poorly known. We investigated reproductive traits of eight riverine mussel species in Alabama and Mississippi, U.S.A.: Amblema plicata, Elliptio arca, Fusconaia cerina, Lampsilis ornata, Obliquaria reflexa, Pleurobema decisum, Quadrula asperata and Q. pustulosa, and compare our results with existing life history information for other species. 2. These eight species had reproductive traits characteristic of large, outcrossing populations: hermaphrodites were rare, we found no evidence of protandry, and sex ratios were even or slightly male‐biased. 3. Age at sexual maturity varied among species, ranging from <1 to 2 years for L. ornata to 3–9 years for Q. asperata. In all species, most mature females participated in reproduction and fertilisation success was high. 5. Fecundity was related positively to both length and age, but length was the best predictor. In six species, fecundity increased exponentially with increasing size; in two species the rate of increase in fecundity declined in larger animals. In four species, fecundity declined in older animals. These latter results indicate weak reproductive senescence; however, in all species, older individuals continued to produce large numbers of offspring. Mean annual fecundity differed widely among species ranging from 9647 to 325 709. Within‐species differences in fecundity were found among rivers and among populations within a river. 6. The wide variation in reproductive traits among species indicates the existence of widely divergent life history strategies in freshwater mussels.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to characterize the population biology (sex ratio, size structure, relative growth of reproductive characters and realised fecundity) of the crab Microphrys bicornutusfrom Isla Margarita, Venezuela. Nearly 100 crabs were collected and fixed monthly during 1998. In the laboratory, crabs were sexed and measured: maximum carapace length, chelae length, chelae and abdomen width for females and first pleopod length for males. Additionally, 96 ovigerous females were collected to determine fecundity. The following measurements were taken for each female: body wet weight (BWW), body dry weight (BDW), egg wet weight (EWW), egg dry weight (EDW) and number of eggs (NE). The following determinations were made: relative fecundity (RF) = NE/BDW and reproductive output (RO) = (EDW/ BDW) × 100. Relative size at the onset of maturity (RSOM) was calculated as minimum ovigerous female/female's maximum size. The results indicate that the sex ratio is nearly 1:1 during the entire year. Ovigerous females and moulted males and females were observed throughout the year. Size frequency distribution and size at the onset of sexual maturity, estimated by relative growth of the sexual secondary characters and RSOM value, differed from those estimated in studies done in Jamaica and Buchuaco, Venezuela.  相似文献

The reproductive biology and breeding cycle of a tropical cyprinid, Thynnichthys thynnoides (Bleeker), from Chenderoh Reservoir, Malaysia was studied from June 1991 to November 1992. A total of 329 and 246 mature females and males and 167 immature females were sampled during the study. Three breeding cycles were observed and the cycles coincided with high reservoir water level which resulted in the floodings of the littoral zone. Five and four gonad developmental stages were observed for females and males, respectively. Oocyte diameter distribution study indicated the species was a total spawner although clutches of ripe oocytes might be released over an extended time period. Fecundity was related to body weight and both absolute and relative fecundity increased with body size. Absolute fecundity ranged from 26962 ± 1484 to 173520 ± 127420 eggs fish–1, whereas relative fecundity ranged from 121 ± 53 to 451 ± 259 eggs g–1 body weight, respectively.  相似文献

Fecundity of four species of catfishes, namely, Mystus seenghala (Sykes), Mystus cavasius (Ham), Wallagonia attu (Bloch) and Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch), was studied. The fecundity of Mystus seenghala and Mystus cavasius varied between 20064 to 46443 and 3314 to 63135 respectively. In Wallagonia attu and Heteropneustes fossilis it varied between 66070 to 453148 and 1375 to 46737 respectively. In all the four species fecundity has a linear relationship with body weight and gonad weight, and a parabolic relationship with length in all the fishes excepting Mystus seenghala, where it is linear. By subjecting the data to multiple regression analysis, it is observed that the fecundity of each species can be most accurately determined by taking two variables together. In all the fishes studied the relative fecundity (Egg/body wt.) does not change significantly either with length or body weight.  相似文献

This study concerns the reproductive strategy of the freshwater fish, Leporinus piau, native to the Brazilian semi‐arid region. The hypothesis of this work predicts that the species would spawn during the rainy season, presenting a seasonal reproductive strategy. The study investigated the structure of total body length and body mass, sex ratio, body size at first sexual maturity, developmental stages of gonads, fecundity, gonadosomatic index (GSI), condition factor (K) and the spawning season of L. piau. Twelve monthly samplings (mean n = 18) were carried out in 2009 and environmental parameters such as rainfall, temperature, pH, electrical conductivity and concentration of dissolved oxygen of water were registered. The sampled population of L. piau (n = 211) showed a slight predominance of males (55%), but with larger and heavier females. First sexual maturation in males occurred earlier (16.5 cm total length) than in females (20.5 cm total length). The species is a total spawner with an average fecundity of 55 000 mature oocytes. Rainfall (225 ± 7.2 mm) and concentration of dissolved oxygen (8.5 ± 0.2 mg L?1) acted as influential factors during the spawning season. The monthly GSI shows that spawning starts when the rainy season is at its maximum and ends synchronously (females r = 0.91; males r = 0.89) with the end of the rainy season. L. piau presents a seasonal reproductive strategy with high reproductive output, providing a population increase and exploitation of the environmental resources.  相似文献

Length‐weight and length‐length relationships were estimated for four native fish species from the Yalong River and its tributaries, China. A total of 976 specimens were collected monthly using trap nets and electric fishing in May 2013 and July 2015 to February 2016. This study presents the first references on LWRs (length–weight relationships) and LLRs (length–length relationships) for three species (Gymnocypris firmispinatus, Paracobitis variegatus and Euchiloglanis kishinouyei). Moreover, maturation length, absolute fecundity and predominant food items for the four species were also described in the study.  相似文献

This study provided new knowledge on reproductive traits of the unique mudskipper Periophthalmodon septemradiatus that is also a potential aquarium pet. Fish specimens were obtained by using fishing rods at the muddy flat in tributaries of the Hau River from August 2017 to July 2018. Data analysis of a collection of 1,504 individuals (930 males and 674 females) showed that the sex ratio of this species was significantly different from the ratio 1:1. As mature gonads were found monthly during the study period, it is suggested that P. septemradiatus is an iteroparous species releasing eggs for a year-round cycle. The fish length at first mature (Lm) showed an increase from estuary to upstream areas. Male P. septemradiatus had higher Lm values than that of females. Likely, the batch fecundity increased from estuary region (5,916 ± 312 SEM eggs) towards upstream area (11,451 ± 953 SEM eggs). The fish total length and weight values had strong positive relationships with batch fecundity, as shown by high determination values (r2), suggesting that batch fecundity increased with fish size. This study provided more information on reproductive biology of P. septemradiatus, which can be utilized for fish population conservation and artificial reproductive study.  相似文献

Fundamental information on the reproductive biology of the lessepsian fish Reticulated leatherjacket Stephanolepis diaspros from the Gulf of Gabes (Eastern Mediterranean Sea) was considered in this study. The study was carried out on a sample of 1,053 specimens of the Reticulated leatherjacket caught by trawlers and were monthly collected from May 2003 to December 2005. The length frequency distribution indicated that males are taller than females. The sex-ratio was 0.87:1 which significantly deviated from the hypothetical distribution of 1:1. The size and the season have an effect on this sex-ratio. Gonadosomatic Index (GSI%) values were highest in July for both sexes and this species accumulates energy reserves in the liver to be spent during the maturity of gonads and the spawning. First maturation occurred at 7.96 cm for females and 10.58 cm (L50) for males. The fecundity of S. diaspros ranged from 28,250 to 218,000 with a mean of 100,778.76 ± 17,702.1. The relationships between absolute fecundity and total length, eviscerated weight and weight of gonads were will described and the correlation coefficients calculated between fecundity and each of these independent variables, are judged to be either significant (R2 > 0.8) indication of a very good model for the fecundity study.  相似文献

Aspects of the reproductive biology of the two species of clupeids known to occur in Lake Kainji, Pellonula afzeliusi Johnels and Sierrathrissa leonensis Thys Van Den Audenaerde were studied for a period of twenty eight months. Mature individuals were found in both species all the year round but with a prolonged peak of activity from December to May, more distinct in P. afzeliusi than in S. leonensis. There were no significant length differences between mature males and females in both species. The smallest mature individuals were 28 mm standard length female; 27 mm standard length male in P. afzeliusi, while the corresponding figures for S. leonensis were 18 mm standard length female and 19 mm standard length male.No sexual dimorphism was observed. There was a simple correlation between fecundity and fish standard body length as well as weight in both species.  相似文献

A major goal of studies on social animals is to understand variation in reproduction within and between groups. We used hierarchical regressions to analyze oviposition rates in the neotropical termite Nasutitermes corniger, a species with both monogynous and polygynous colonies. Queen fecundity was a non-linear, saturating function of queen weight. Greater queen weight was associated with larger nest size and with lower numbers of queens per nest, suggesting competition among queens for resources acquired by the colony. The collective egglaying rate of pairs of queens exceeded that of single queens, but further increases in queen number did not raise total fecundity. Skew in oviposition rates, as quantified by Morisita’s index I δ, averaged 1.2, indicating inequalities in reproductive rates that are only moderately greater than expected for random apportionment. The leveling off of oviposition with increasing queen weight suggests that it is costly for individual females to produce eggs at high rates, which could favor tolerance of reproduction by other females, reducing reproductive skew. We hypothesize that the incentive to tolerate reproduction by other females is especially pronounced for heavier queens, because these queens are close to the limit of their own reproductive capacity. Consistent with this hypothesis, skew in oviposition rates was inversely related to the mean weight of queens within a nest. We investigate extra- and intracellular osmoregulatory capability in two species of hololimnetic Caridea and Anomura: Macrobrachium brasiliense, a palaemonid shrimp, and Aegla franca, an aeglid anomuran, both restricted to continental waters. We also appraise the sharing of physiological characteristics by the hololimnetic Decapoda, and their origins and role in the conquest of fresh water. Both species survive salinity exposure well. While overall hyperosmoregulatory capability is weak in A. franca and moderate in M. brasiliense, both species strongly hyporegulate hemolymph [Cl] but not osmolality. Muscle total free amino acids (FAA) increase slowly but markedly in response to the rapid rise in hemolymph osmolality consequent to hyperosmotic challenge: 3.5-fold in A. franca and 1.9-fold in M. brasiliense. Glycine, taurine, arginine, alanine and proline constitute ≈85% of muscle FAA pools in fresh water; taurine, arginine, alanine each contribute ≈22% in A. franca, while glycine predominates (70%) in M. brasiliense. These FAA also show the greatest increases on salinity challenge. Muscle FAA titers correlate strongly (R = 0.82) with hemolymph osmolalities across the main decapod sub/infraorders, revealing that marine species with high hemolymph osmolalities achieve isosmoticity of the intra- and extracellular fluids partly through elevated intracellular FAA concentrations; freshwater species show low hemolymph osmolalities and exhibit reduced intracellular FAA titers, consistent with isosmoticity at a far lower external osmolality. Given the decapod phylogeny adopted here and their multiple, independent invasions of fresh water, particularly by the Caridea and Anomura, our findings suggest that homoplastic strategies underlie osmotic and ionic homeostasis in the extant freshwater Decapoda.  相似文献

Parameters of equations relating wet and dry body weight to length have been calculated for four species of caprellids from the Japan Sea (Possjet Bay), specifically Caprella cristibrachium, C. kroyeri, C. penantis, and C. bispinosa. A common equation was obtained for oxygen consumption rate in relation to body weight. It was shown that within the Order Amphipoda the metabolic rate of caprellids is 1.5 times lower than that of gammarids. The differences in the fecundity of gravid females of four species and females of one species in the spring and summer, respectively, are shown. At the same time the relationship between number of eggs per female and wet body weight of female is approximated by one equation. The equation obtained shows that caprellids represent an ecologically homogeneous group.  相似文献

Reproductive biology of blue sucker in a large Midwestern river   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Efforts to protect or rehabilitate depressed blue sucker Cycleptus elongatus populations require an understanding of life‐history characteristics and reproductive biology to provide fisheries managers with the tools required for science‐based management. The objective of this study was to examine the reproductive biology of blue sucker in the Wabash River, Indiana, during March and April 2006. A total of 105 reproductively mature blue sucker (53 males, 52 females) was collected using boat electrofishing to examine size‐at‐maturity, absolute fecundity, gonadosomatic index (GSI), relative fecundity, and estimated egg size. Size‐at‐maturity was estimated at 515 mm total length (TL) for males and 568 mm TL for females. Mean absolute fecundity of females captured during the study was 150 704 eggs per female (range, 26 829–267 471 eggs per female) and was positively related to both TL (r2 = 0.66) and wet weight (r2 = 0.77). Mean GSI was 6.4% (range, 2–9.3%) for males and 17.2% (range, 4.3–23.4%) for females. Relative fecundity ranged from 15 331 to 65 887 eggs kg?1 body weight (mean = 46 946 eggs kg?1 body weight) and was strongly correlated with GSI (r2 = 0.87). Mean estimated egg size was 278 eggs g?1 (range, 229 364 eggs g?1) and exhibited an inverse relationship to GSI (r2 = 0.42). The results of our study provide information on the reproductive biology of blue sucker which can be used to aid in the identification of potential recovery threats for depressed populations.  相似文献

We studied the female reproductive pattern of Callinectes sapidus, which was introduced to the Mediterranean in the 20th century. We assessed female size at first maturity, fecundity, and fecundity relationship to size in Iskenderun Bay, eastern Mediterranean, Turkey. Samples were collected between July 2014 and June 2015 using bottom trawling at depths ranging from 1 to 50 m. A total of 322 crabs were caught of which 308 (95.7%) were females including 116 ovigerous ones. The minimum carapace width of the mature females was 39.1 mm and the mean carapace width 123.8 mm. The carapace width of ovigerous females varied between 95.1 and 144.5 mm, with a mean of 120.3 mm. The highest number of ovigerous females was observed in July and August. Mean fecundity was 1.91 million (667,950–4,669,853) eggs per female. A weak positive linear relationship between fecundity and carapace width was noted, as well as a high correlation with total egg weight. In the eastern Mediterranean, maturity sizes of females were smaller than those in the native region of the species.  相似文献

1. Fecundity of a Dikerogammarus villosus population at Spitz was studied in the Austrian Danube during the 3‐year period 2002–2004. Ovigerous females were absent in October and November, and extremely scarce in December when the reproductive season started again slowly. From January to September pre‐copulatory pairs and egg‐carrying females were present. The reproductive cycle lasted for 9–10 months. 2. Various pigmentation phenotypes of D. villosus have been described in the literature. However, no significant differences were found between the reproductive variables studied here and several colour morphs. Mating was size‐assortative; mean body length of males was about 1.3 times greater than that of their potential mates, and the wet weight was approximately twice as heavy. 3. The relationship between the number of embryos per clutch and the wet weight of females was described by a 3‐parameter power equation. The population mean was 43 eggs with a range of five to 194 eggs. Eighty‐two specimens from 1359 D. villosus females had more than 100 eggs: the smallest of these females was 12 mm long (30 mg) wet weight, and the largest, which was 18 mm long (91 mg), had 194 eggs in embryonic development stage 4. 4. Numbers of embryos in developmental stages 2 (early egg stage) and 7 (newly hatched neonates) differed significantly with body wet weight of ovigerous females (P < 0.05). For an average female in the range 10–12 mm (20–30 mg) the number of juveniles in the brood pouch was 74% of the number of stage 2 eggs. This value can be interpreted as the survival rate of eggs. 5. The overall mean egg volume (EV, ±95% CL) of stage 2 eggs of D. villosus was 0.05 ± 0.001 mm3, and EV increased significantly at each stage of development. At stage 6, egg volume had increased by a factor of 2.6, and averaged 0.13 ± 0.001 mm3. In comparison, G. fossarum and G. roeseli had significantly larger eggs in all developmental stages. 6. Mean egg size of D. villosus (0.063 mm3) was maximal in January. For D. villosus (and G. roeseli) the minimum mean egg size occurred in September. In contrast to G. fossarum and G. roeseli, a second peak in egg size was not observed for D. villosus, and egg size fell more or less successively from January to September. 7. A simple index of fecundity was calculated from the number of stage 2 eggs divided by the female's wet weight. The highest values were observed in April and May, when females from the overwintering generation grew to their maximum body size. Thus the release of a large number of neonates corresponds with the availability of plentiful food and rising water temperatures for juvenile growth in the spring. The lowest value occurred in December. In June the small females of a summer generation appeared, with a naturally low fecundity. 8. The relationship between brood development time and water temperature was studied in the laboratory at a series of constant temperatures. At 16 °C, mean brood development time was 14 days for D. villosus, compared with about 3 weeks for the indigenous species. At 10 °C, mean brood development time was 24 days in D. villosus, compared with 40 days in G. fossarum and 44 days in G. roeseli. At 4 °C it was 1.8 and 3.5 times longer in G. fossarum and G. roeseli. 9. The number of offspring produced by a single clutch from a large female D. villosus is considerably higher than the total numbers produced by the indigenous freshwater gammarids, such as G. fossarum, G. roeseli and G. pulex, during their life‐spans of 1.5–2 years in seven to nine successive broods. Only one or two large ovigerous D. villosus would probably be enough to start a new population. A potentially high reproductive capacity, comparatively small eggs, optimal timing to release the maximum number of neonates per female in April/May, and a long reproductive cycle, together with rapid development of eggs, rapid growth to sexual maturation, short life span, tolerance to a wide range of environmental conditions, and exceptional predatory capabilities, all give the invasive Ponto‐Caspian gammarid an opportunity to become globally distributed in freshwater ecosystems of the temperate climate zone.  相似文献

Understanding elasmobranch reproductive biology is necessary for species conservation. Multiple paternity (MP) has been reported for elasmobranchs, and this study investigates the reproductive aspects and mating system (paternity genetic analyses) for Squalus albicaudus. Thirteen pregnant females were analysed concerning reproductive parameters, and the mating system was assessed for nine females and their litters. The study found a mean fecundity of 2.84 pups per litter without correlation between total female length and the number of embryos per litter. One litter showed evidence of MP, indicating the presence of polyandrous behaviour of the species.  相似文献

Hemiculter leucisculus are multiple spawners with indeterminate fecundity, although previous fecundity estimates have assumed a determinate spawning pattern. Batch fecundity and spawning frequency of H. leucisculus were studied in Erhai Lake, China, in which the fish, as an exotic species, has become a successful colonizer. Spawning frequency was 16.05 %, as determined from the percent of females with postovulatory follicles 12 to 36 h old during the peak reproductive period (from May 27 to August 8). The average interval between spawning was 6.2 days and there were more than 16 total spawning batches during the peak reproductive period. The average batch fecundity (mean ± SD) was 11,934?±?5,921 hydrated oocytes in 40 females (standard length or SL: 9.1–14.4 cm), while relative batch fecundity was 560?±?137 eggs g?1 wet weight. The total potential annual fecundity was approximately 190,944 oocytes over the whole spawning season and was much higher than the estimated standing stock (31,585 oocytes) of yolked oocytes (36 females, SL: 9.5–16.2 cm) at the beginning of the spawning season in April 2010. This high annual fecundity is likely to have contributed to successful invasion of Erhai Lake by H. leucisculus.  相似文献

Knowledge of the main reproductive parameters of a species is fundamental for comprehension of the reproductive behavior of a species within its habitat. To evaluate the reproductive biology of curimbatá, Prochilodus argenteus, an important species for commercial fisheries of the São Francisco River basin, Brazil, 153 females and 174 males were captured during 1999–2000 in the São Francisco River. The females (maximum total length 71.2 cm and maximum weight 7.8 kg) were larger than the males (65.0 cm and 4.3 kg). The weight–length ratio indicated isometric growth for females (b = 3.15) and for males (b = 3.04). Prochilodus argenteus presented total spawning from October to January. Increase in rainfall was the main triggering factor for reproduction, showing a positive correlation with the gonadosomatic index (r = 0.84 females; r = 0.95 males). Size at gonadal maturation of females and males was 31.0 and 25.5 cm, respectively. This study provides information to aid in future implementation of captive breeding and management practices that intend to reduce the ongoing depletion of natural stocks.  相似文献
