Daily light exposure in morning-type and evening-type individuals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Morning-type individuals (M-types) have earlier sleep schedules than do evening types (E-types) and therefore differ in their exposure to the external light-dark cycle. M-types and E-types usually differ in their endogenous circadian phase as well, but whether this is the cause or the consequence of the difference in light exposure remains controversial. In this study, ambulatory monitoring was used to measure 24-h light exposure in M-type and E-type subjects for 7 consecutive days. The circadian phase of each subject was then estimated in the laboratory using the dim-light melatonin onset in saliva (DLMO) and the core body temperature minimum (Tmin). On average, M-types had earlier sleep schedules and earlier circadian phases than E-types. They also showed more minutes of daily bright light exposure (> 1000 lux) than E-types. As expected, the 24-h patterns of light exposure analyzed in relation to clock time indicated that M-types were exposed to more light in the morning than E-types and that the reverse was true in the late evening. However, there was no significant difference when the light profiles were analyzed in relation to circadian phase, suggesting that, on average, the circadian pacemaker of both M-types and E-types was similarly entrained to the light-dark cycle they usually experience. Some M-types and E-types had different sleep schedules but similar circadian phases. These subjects also had identical light profiles in relation to their circadian phase. By contrast, M-types and E-types with very early or very late circadian phases showed large differences in their profiles of light exposure in relation to their circadian phase. This observation suggests that in these individuals, early or late circadian phases are related to relatively short and long circadian periods and that a phase-delaying profile of light exposure in M-types and a phase-advancing profile in E-types are necessary to ensure a stable entrainment to the 24-h day.  相似文献

As heart-rate variability (HRV) is under evaluation in clinical applications, the authors sought to better define the interdependent impact of age, maximal exercise, and diurnal variation under physiologic conditions. The authors evaluated the diurnal changes in HRV 24-h pre- and post-maximal aerobic exercise testing to exhaustion in young (19–25 yrs, n?=?12) and middle-aged (40–55 yrs, n?=?12) adults. Subjects wore a portable 5-lead electrocardiogram holter for 48?h (24?h prior to and following a maximal aerobic capacity test). Time-, frequency-, time-frequency-, and scale-invariant-domain measures of HRV were computed from RR-interval data analyzed using a 5-min window size and a 2.5-min step size, resulting in a different set of outputs every 2.5?min. Results were averaged (mean?±?SE) over four prespecified time periods during the morning, afternoon, evening, and night on Day 1 and Day 2. Diurnal changes in HRV in young and middle-aged adults were compared using a two-way, repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). Young adults demonstrated higher HRV compared to middle-aged adults during periods of wakefulness and sleep prior to maximal exercise stress testing (i.e., high-frequency power during Day 1: young adults: morning 1862?±?496?ms2, afternoon 1797?±?384?ms2, evening 1908?±?431?ms2, and night 3202?±?728?ms2; middle-aged adults: morning 341?±?53?ms2, afternoon 405?±?68?ms2, evening 469?±?80?ms2, and night 836?±?136?ms2) (p < .05). Exercise resulted in reductions in HRV such that multiple measures of HRV were not significantly different between age groups during the afternoon and evening periods. All measures of HRV demonstrated between-group differences overnight on Day 2 (p < .05). Young adults are associated with higher baseline HRV during the daytime. Sleep increases variability equally and proportionally to daytime variability. Given the higher baseline awake HRV and equal rise in HRV during sleep, the change in HRV from sleep to morning with exercise is greater in younger subjects. These physiologic results have clinical significance in understanding the pathophysiology of altered variability in ill patients. (Author correspondence: )  相似文献

In order to study the cognitive function rhythm related to the auditory frequency system for people who prefer to be active in the morning and at night, we conducted an experiment during morning (09:00), evening (17:00) and late-night (01:00) periods. On the basis of a morningness/eveningness questionnaire, six moderately morning-type subjects (M-types) and seven evening-type subjects (E-types) were selected. Diurnal variation of event-related potential (ERP) were assessed under low-frequency (250/500 Hz) and high-frequency (1000/2000 Hz) condition using an oddball task. M-types were tested during the morning (09:00) and evening (17:00) periods, and E-types were tested during the evening (17:00) and midnight (01:00) periods. Subjects were asked to press a button when the target stimulus was detected. We found that the P300 amplitude at 09:00 was significantly greater than that at 17:00 for M-types, was significantly greater at 17:00 than that at 01:00 for E-types. A significant difference of P300 latency and P300 amplitude was observed at 17:00 between M-types and E-types. The P300 amplitude obtained after a low-frequency stimulus was significantly greater than that after a high-frequency stimulus at 09:00 for M-types, and at 01:00 for E-types. These results revealed that stimulus frequency had effects on the diurnal changes of human cognitive function, and circadian typology had a direct effect on the diurnal change of human cognitive function. This study has extended the previous findings of auditory P300 studies on diurnal variations in terms of circadian typology and stimulus parameter.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of Ramadan fasting on anaerobic performances and their diurnal fluctuations. In a balanced and randomized study design, 12 subjects were measured for maximal power (Pmax; force‐velocity test), peak power (Ppeak), and mean power (Pmean) with the Wingate test at 07:00, 17:00, and 21:00 h on four different occasions: one week before Ramadan (BR), the second week of Ramadan (SWR), the fourth week of Ramadan (ER), and two weeks after Ramadan (AR). There was an interval of 28 h between any two successive tests. Oral temperature was measured before each test. Under each condition, the results showed a time‐of‐day effect on oral temperature. Analysis of variance revealed a significant (Ramadan×time‐of‐day of test) interaction effect on Pmax. This variable improved significantly from morning to evening before Ramadan (1.1±0.2 W · kg?1), during the second week of Ramadan (0.6±0.2 W · kg?1), and two weeks after the end of Ramadan (0.9±0.2 W · kg?1). However, daily fluctuations disappeared during the fourth week of Ramadan. For Ppeak and Pmean, there was no significant Ramadan×test‐time interaction. These variables improved significantly from morning to evening before Ramadan ([1±0.3 W · kg?1] for Ppeak and [1.7±1.6 W · kg?1] for Pmean) and in the second week of Ramadan ([0.9±0.6 W · kg?1] for Ppeak and [1.7±1.5 W · kg?1] for Pmean). However, they were not affected by time‐of‐day in the fourth week of Ramadan. Considering the effect of Ramadan on anaerobic performances, in comparison with before Ramadan, no significant difference was observed during Ramadan at 07:00 h. The variables were significantly lower in the second week of Ramadan and in the fourth week of Ramadan at 17:00 h and 21:00 h. Pmean was not affected during the second week of Ramadan. In conclusion, the time‐of‐day effect on anaerobic power variables tends to disappear during Ramadan. In comparison with the period before Ramadan, anaerobic performances were unaffected in the morning but impaired in the evening during Ramadan.  相似文献

The adequate time to perform physical activity (PA) to maintain optimal circadian system health has not been defined. We studied the influence of morning and evening PA on circadian rhythmicity in 16 women with wrist temperature (WT). Participants performed controlled PA (45?min continuous-running) during 7 days in the morning (MPA) and evening (EPA) and results were compared with a no-exercise-week (C). EPA was characterized by a lower amplitude (evening: 0.028?±?0.01?°C versus control: 0.038?±?0.016?°C; p?<?0.05) less pronounced second-harmonic (power) (evening: 0.41?±?0.47 versus morning: 1.04?±?0.59); and achrophase delay (evening: 06:35?±?02:14?h versus morning: 04:51?±?01:11?h; p?<?0.05) as compared to MPA and C. Performing PA in the late evening might not be as beneficial as in the morning.  相似文献

The stress response of Oncorhynchus mykiss in high‐altitude farms in central Mexico was investigated over two seasons: the cool (9·1–13·7° C) dry winter season, and the warmer (14·7–15·9° C), wetter summer season. Fish were subjected to an acute stress test followed by sampling of six physiological variables: blood cortisol, glucose, lactate, total antioxidant capacity, haemoglobin concentration and per cent packed cell volume (VPC%). Multivariate analyses revealed that lactate and total antioxidant capacity were significantly higher in the summer, when water temperatures were warmer and moderate hypoxia (4·9–5·3 mg l?1) prevailed. In contrast, plasma cortisol was significantly higher in the winter (mean ± s.e .: 76·7 ± 4·0 ng ml?1) when temperatures were cooler and dissolved oxygen levels higher (6·05–7·9 mg l?1), than in the summer (22·7 ± 3·8 ng ml?1). Haemoglobin concentrations (mg dl?1) were not significantly different between seasons, but VPC% was significantly higher in the summer (50%) than in the winter (35%). These results suggest that in summer, effects of high altitude on farmed fish are exacerbated by stresses of high temperatures and hypoxia, resulting in higher blood lactate, increased total antioxidant capacity and elevated VPC% levels.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to examine levels of energetic arousal (EA), tense arousal (TA), and hedonic tone (HT) in individuals with different circadian preferences. Subjects were males with extreme either morning (M-type) or evening (E-type) preferences (N=31), selected using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire cutoff points derived from the Polish population norms. They completed the UWIST Mood Adjective Check List every 1.5 h between 08:00 to 20:00 h in laboratory conditions. The obtained data showed higher levels of TA and lower levels of HT in E-types over the whole day as compared to M-types. As for EA, M-types showed higher levels than E-types between 08:00 to 17:00 h, but the two groups showed no differences during the later hours of the day. Both groups were found to exhibit similar diurnal patterns in TA and HT, and dissimilarity between M-types and E-types appeared in the daily course of EA. The results show the three-dimensional model of mood is more advantageous in M-types than in E-types during the hours of typical human activity.  相似文献

Platelet activation state changes by exercise. The effect of exercise time on platelet activation state and formation of platelet–neutrophil aggregates are not known yet. In this study the effect of exercise and time of day were examined on platelet activity with platelet–neutrophil aggregates. Ten moderately active males aged 27± 1.63 (mean±S.D.) years completed sub-maximal (70% VO2max) exercise trials for 30 min. Blood pressure (BP) was recorded. Venous blood samples were obtained at rest, immediately post-exercise and after 30 min of recovery. Whole blood was analysed for haematocrit (Hct), haemoglobin (Hb), platelet count (PC), mean platelet count (MPV) and platelet aggregation (PA). Platelet–neutrophil aggregates and beta-thromboglobulin (β-TG) levels were assayed. Platelet count showed significant increase after morning exercise ((236± 32)×109 l−1 versus (202± 34)×109 l−1 baseline, p < 0.05). Exercise resulted in significantly lower MPV after the evening exercise (9.16± 0.5 fl versus 9.65± 0.36 fl, p < 0.05). Platelet aggregation by adenosine diphosphate (ADP) decreased after morning exercise and the recovery aggregation levels were significantly different at two different times of the day (68± 20% a.m. versus 80± 12% p.m., p < 0.05). It was also showed that platelet–neutrophil aggregates increased significantly from baseline after both exercises. Exercise-induced platelet–neutrophil aggregates were higher in the evening (10.7± 1.3% p.m. versus 6.4± 1.8% a.m., p < 0.0001). It is therefore concluded that besides platelet–platelet aggregation, exercise can cause platelet– neutrophil aggregates. In addition, time of day has an effect on platelet activation related events. Circadian variations of physiological parameters may have an effect on thrombus formation by platelet activation. (Mol Cell Biochem xxx: 119–124, 2005)  相似文献

Zinc and salinity effects on membrane transport in Chara connivens   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Pressure-probe measurements showed that the pressure relaxation of internodal cells of the freshwater alga Chara connivens slowed considerably when 1–5 mol m?3 Zn2+, or more especially Zn2+ and 75 mol m?3 NaCl, were present in the medium for periods of 1 h or longer. These results indicate that the water permeability of the Chara membrane is decreased by Zn2+, and that this effect is enhanced by 75 mol m?3 NaCl. Specific values taken after 375 min exposure were: 5 mol m?3 Zn2+ and 75 mol m?3 NaCl caused the half-time for bulk water movement to increase from 7·8±2·3 to 79·5±5·4s, corresponding to a decrease in the hydraulic conductivity (Lp) from (13·0±3·3) × 10?7 m s?1 mPa?1 to (1·25±0·23) × 10?7 m s?1 MPa?1 (mean±S.D., n= 10). These changes are not seen in the presence of NaCl alone, and to a reduced extent in the presence of 5 mol m?3Zn2+ alone (after 375 min, Lp was (2·4±0·1) × 10?7 m s?1 MPa?1, mean±S.D., n = 6). Ca2+ cannot substitute for Zn2+, but seems to competitively inhibit Zn2+. There was another, kinetically distinct effect of Zn2+: the ingress of Na+ within 15 min of exposure to 75 mol m?3 NaCl is halved by the presence of 1–5 mol m?3 Zn2+, although internal osmolality is little changed by Zn2+. In spite of this, Zn2+ does not exert the long-term protection against NaCl that has been reported for Ca2+. Depending on the concentration of Zn2+ and the duration of the exposure, the effects on water permeability were fully or partly reversible within 24–48 h. The mechanism of these changes is difficult to identify. One possibility is a zinc-induced restriction of trans-membrane channels to give single-file channels which can be blocked by salt.  相似文献

Two simple, rapid, sensitive and precise spectrophotometric and spectrofluorimetric methods were developed for the determination of indacaterol maleate in bulk powder and capsules. Both methods were based on the direct measurement of the drug in methanol. In the spectrophotometric merthod (Method I) the absorbance was measured at 259 nm. The absorbance‐concentration plot was rectilinear over the range 1.0–10.0 µg mL?1 with a lower detection limit (LOD) of 0.078 µg mL?1 and lower quantification limit (LOQ) of 0.238 µg mL?1. Meanwhile in the spectrofluorimetric method (Method II) the native fluorescence was measured at 358 nm after excitation at 258 nm. The fluorescence‐concentration plot was rectilinear over the range of 1.0–40.0 ng mL?1 with an LOD of 0.075 ng mL?1and an LOQ of 0.226 ng mL?1. The proposed methods were successfully applied to the determination of indacaterol maleate in capsules with average percent recoveries ± RSD% of 99.94 ± 0.96 for Method I and 99.97 ± 0.81 for Method II. In addition, the proposed methods were extended to a content uniformity test according to the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) guidelines and were accurate, precise for the capsules studied with acceptance value 3.98 for Method I and 2.616 for Method II. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of time of day on stroke parameters and motor organization in front-crawl swimmers. In a randomized order, fourteen regional swimmers (age: 18.7 ± 1.6 years) performed maximal front crawls over 12.5 m during two experimental sessions; the morning sessions were conducted between 07:00 and 09:00 h and the evening experiments were conducted between 17:00 and 19:00 h. Stroke parameters (swim velocity, stroke rate [SR], and stroke length), motor organization (arm stroke phases and arm coordination) were calculated from aerial and underwater side-view cameras. Arm coordination was quantified in terms of an index of coordination (Idc). Results showed that oral temperature was significantly higher in the evening 36.8 ± 0.2 °C than in the morning 36.1 ± 0.2 °C (p < 0.001), with a morning–evening difference of ?0.7 ± 0.1 °C. Performance was also higher in the evening (7.4 ± 0.6 s) than in the morning (8.0 ± 0.8 s) (p < 0.001), with a morning–evening difference of 0.55 ± 0.30 s. Likewise, values of swim velocity and SR were higher in the evening than in the morning (p < 0.001) with morning–evening differences of ?0.10 ± 0.04 m s?1 and ?3.99 ± 2.91 cycles min?1, respectively. Percentage Idc increased significantly (p < 0.01) between the morning (?5.1 ± 6.5%) and evening (?1.6 ± 7.0%). It is concluded that maximal swimming trials are performed better in the evening than the morning, and that this might be explained by better stroke parameters and motor organization at this time.  相似文献

The recovery of oxygen uptake to the standard metabolic rate (SMR) following exhaustive chasing exercise in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar parr occurred in three phases (rapid, plateau and slow). The initial recovery phase lasted 0·7 h and contributed 16% to the total excess post‐exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). It was followed by a longer plateau phase that contributed 53% to the total EPOC. The slow recovery phase that completed recovery of SMR, which has not been reported previously, made a 31% contribution to the total EPOC. The plasticity of EPOC was demonstrated in exercise‐trained fish. Exercise training increased EPOC by 39% when compared with control fish (mean ± S.E., 877·7 ± 73·1 v . 629·2 ± 53·4 mg O2 kg?1, d.f. = 9, P <  0·05), with the duration of the plateau phase increasing by 38% (4·7 ± 0·58 v . 3·4 ± 0·16 h, d.f. = 9, P <  0·05) and the contribution of the slow phase to the total EPOC increasing by 80% (173·9 ± 23·9 v . 312·5 ± 50·4 mg O2 kg?1, d.f. = 9, P  < 0·05). As a result, the combination of the plateau and slow phases of exercise‐trained fish increased by 47% compared with control fish (756·6 ± 71·4 v . 513·6 ± 43·1 mg O2 kg?1; d.f. = 9, P  = 0·01). To substantiate the hypothesis that the plateau and slow recovery phase of EPOC was related to general metabolic recovery following exhaustive exercise, the time‐course for recovery of SMR was compared with previously published metabolite recovery profiles. The final phase of metabolic recovery was temporally associated with the final phases of gluconeogenesis, lactate oxidation and muscle intracellular pH regulation. Therefore, the plasticity of the latter phase of EPOC agreed with the known effects of exercise training in fishes.  相似文献

BackgroundAn acute bout of exercise can improve endothelial function and insulin sensitivity when measured on the day following exercise. Our aim was to compare acute high-intensity continuous exercise (HICE) to high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) on circulating endothelial microparticles (EMPs) and insulin sensitivity in overweight/obese men and women.MethodsInactive males (BMI = 30 ± 3, 25 ± 6 yr, n = 6) and females (BMI = 28 ± 2, 21 ± 3 yr, n = 7) participated in three experimental trials in a randomized counterbalanced crossover design: 1) No exercise control (Control); 2) HICE (20 min cycling @ just above ventilatory threshold); 3) HIIE (10 X 1-min @ ∼90% peak aerobic power). Exercise conditions were matched for external work and diet was controlled post-exercise. Fasting blood samples were obtained ∼18 hr after each condition. CD62E+ and CD31+/CD42b- EMPs were assessed by flow cytometry and insulin resistance (IR) was estimated by homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR).ResultsThere was a significant sex X exercise interaction for CD62E+ EMPs, CD31+/CD42b- EMPs, and HOMA-IR (all P<0.05). In males, both HICE and HIIE reduced EMPs compared to Control (P≤0.05). In females, HICE increased CD62E+ EMPs (P<0.05 vs. Control) whereas CD31+/CD42b- EMPs were unaltered by either exercise type. There was a significant increase in HOMA-IR in males but a decrease in females following HIIE compared to Control (P<0.05).ConclusionsOverweight/obese males and females appear to respond differently to acute bouts of high-intensity exercise. A single session of HICE and HIIE reduced circulating EMPs measured on the morning following exercise in males but in females CD62E+ EMPs were increased following HICE. Next day HOMA-IR paradoxically increased in males but was reduced in females following HIIE. Future research is needed to investigate mechanisms responsible for potential differential responses between males and females.  相似文献

A microtitre plate indirect enzyme‐linked immunoassay (ELISA) was developed for measuring plasma cortisol levels in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, gilthead sea bream Sparus auratus sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax and Senegalese sole Solea senegalensis. Covalink microplates pretreated with disuccinimidyl suberate were coated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) conjugated to cortisol‐3‐carboxymethyl oxime. After blocking with BSA, competition was started by addition of plasma samples and anti‐cortisol antibody raised in rabbit. Goat anti‐rabbit IgG conjugated‐peroxidase was added as second antibody and then incubated with orthophenylenediamine as substrate. Reaction was stopped with 0·1 M HCl and absorbance was read at 450 nm in an automatic plate reader. The standard curve was linear from the lower limit of sensitivity of the assay (c. 0·3 ng ml?1) to c. 3000 ng ml?1. Dose‐response inhibition curves using serially diluted plasma samples of four species consistently showed parallelism with the standard curve using cortisol. The ELISA satisfied the strictest criteria of specificity (cross‐reactivity of anti‐cortisol antibody with testosterone, progesterone and 17ß‐oestradiol was negligible, cross‐reactivity with cortisone, corticosterone and 11‐deoxycortisol, was 1·5, 1 and 0·1%, respectively), reproducibility (interassay CV <6%), precision (intra‐assay CV <4%), and accuracy (average recovery >98%). Plasma cortisol concentration in rested fishes was in the range of 5–30 ng ml?1. To physiologically validate the technique, changes in plasma cortisol concentrations were also measured in plasma of rainbow trout and gilthead sea bream following an acute 15 min chasing or 3 min air‐exposure stress, respectively. In both species plasma concentrations of cortisol, glucose and lactate rose significantly with respect to controls, showing concentrations similar to those reported previously for these species under similar stress conditions. Furthermore, gilthead sea bream chronically stressed by maintaining for 14 days under increased stocking density conditions also showed increased concentrations of plasma cortisol and glucose. These results validate the indirect ELISA technique developed for use in the evaluation of plasma cortisol concentration of at least four fish species.  相似文献

Injection of somatostatin‐14 (SS‐14) at 5 ng g?1 body mass (BM) into rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss decreased (P < 0·05, cubic, r2 = 0·54) levels of growth hormone (GH) (1·5 ± 0·9 ng ml?1v. 6·6 ± 0·6 ng ml?1) over time when compared to controls. Somatostatin‐14 at 50 ng g?1 BM also decreased (P = 0·064, quadratic; r2 = 0·30) levels of GH (3·6 ± 2·1 ng ml?1v. 6·6 ± 0·6 ng ml?1) over time compared to controls. In a second study, passive immunization against SS‐14 (1 : 25 dose) increased (P = 0·10, cubic, r2 = 0·12) levels of GH (11·0 ± 4·8 ng ml?1v. 5·2 ± 1·4 ng ml?1) over time. Passively immunizing against SS‐14 (1 : 50 dose) increased (P < 0·05, cubic, r2 = 0·10) levels of GH (8·2 ± 2·3 ng ml?1v. 5·2 ± 1·4 ng ml?1) over time compared to controls. Overall, in the active immunization study there was no difference (P > 0·10) in specific growth rate (G) or feed conversion ratio (FCR) between the three treatment groups during the 9 weeks of the study. Only four of the fish immunized against SS‐14, however, developed antibody titres against SS. Compared to controls, these fish exhibited a G of 0·89 ± 0·09 v. 0·56 ± 0·09% per 3 weeks and FCR of 0·80 ± 0·04 v. 1·20 ± 0·05 g g?1. In SS‐14 immunized fish, levels of GH decreased (P < 0·05) by day 63 while levels of insulin like growth factor‐I (IGF‐I) increased (P < 0·05) by day 42 and 63. These results indicate the hypothalamic hormone SS‐14 regulates GH secretion similarly in rainbow trout as it does in mammals. Active immunization against SS‐14 could improve growth performance in rainbow trout but enhanced G and FCR is dependent upon generation of antibody titres.  相似文献

Groups of mature (5+ year old) Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus held in sea water were exposed for 34 days to either a high (mean ±s.e . 0·15 ± 0·01 sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis g?1 fish mass) (HI), medium (0·07 ± 0·00 sea lice g?1 fish mass) (MI) or no [control (C)] sea‐lice infection during early stages of gonad development (June to July). Infection with sea lice resulted in increased plasma cortisol concentrations and this was related to intensity of infection; females tended to have higher cortisol concentrations than males at high infection intensities (HI group: female c. 130 ng ml?1; male c. 80 ng ml?1). Plasma osmolality (C c. 330, MI c. 350 and HI c. 415 mOsm) and chloride concentrations (C c. 135, MI c. 155 and HI c. 190 mM) increased significantly with infection intensity, indicating osmoregulatory problems in infected fish. A strong positive relationship between plasma osmolality and cortisol concentration was recorded. Plasma sex‐steroid concentrations were influenced negatively by sea‐lice infection, particularly in the HI group, and were inversely related to plasma cortisol concentrations. The most heavily infected fish postponed the initiation of reproductive development until exposed to fresh water and timing of ovulation tended to be delayed in these fish. Growth rate and condition were negatively influenced by sea‐lice infection and growth rate was inversely related to plasma cortisol concentrations. Sea‐lice infection resulted in mortality among females in the HI group, and the proportion of maturing females was lower in the MI group (46%) than in the controls (85%). Egg production in the MI and HI groups was c. 50 and 30% of the C group. Egg size, embryonic survival and fry mass did not differ across groups. Sea lice influence reproductive development and egg production in S. alpinus, and consequently these parasites may influence populations via sublethal effects on broodfish, affecting growth and condition, and their reproductive output.  相似文献

Myosmine is a minor tobacco alkaloid with widespread occurrence in the human diet. Myosmine is genotoxic in human cells and is readily nitrosated and peroxidated yielding reactive intermediates with carcinogenic potential. For biomonitoring of short-term and long-term exposure, analytical methods were established for determination of myosmine together with nicotine and cotinine in plasma, saliva and toenail by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Validation of the method with samples of 14 smokers and 10 non-smokers showed smoking-dependent differences of myosmine in toenails (66?±?56 vs 21?±?15?ng?g?1, p?<0.01) as well as saliva (2.54?±?2.68 vs 0.73?±?0.65?ng ml?1, p <0.01). However, these differences were much smaller than those with nicotine (1971?±?818 vs 132?±?82?ng g?1, p <0.0001) and cotinine (1237?±?818 vs <35?ng?g?1) in toenail and those of cotinine (97.43?±?84.54 vs 1.85?±?4.50?ng ml?1, p <0.0001) in saliva. These results were confirmed in plasma samples from 84 patients undergoing gastro-oesophageal endoscopy. Differences between 25 smokers and 59 non-smokers are again much lower for myosmine (0.30?±?0.35 vs 0.16?±?0.18?ng?ml?1, p <0.05) than for cotinine (54.67?±?29.63 vs 0.61?±?1.82?ng ml?1, p <0.0001). In conclusion, sources other than tobacco contribute considerably to the human body burden of myosmine.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of time‐of‐day on both maximal sprint power and repeated‐sprint ability (RSA). Nine volunteers (22±4 yrs) performed a RSA test both in the morning (07:00 to 09:00 h) and evening (17:00 to 19:00 h) on different days in a random order. The RSA cycle test consisted of five, 6 sec maximal sprints interspersed by 24 sec of passive recovery. Both blood lactate concentration and heart rate were higher in the evening than morning RSA (lactate values post exercise: 13±3 versus 11±3 mmol/L?1, p<0.05). The peak power developed during the first sprint was higher in the evening than morning (958±112 vs. 915±133 W, p<0.05), but this difference was not apparent in subsequent sprints, leading to a higher power decrement across the 5×6 sec test in the evening (11±2 vs. 7±3%, p<0.05). Both the total work during the RSA cycle test and the power developed during bouts 2 to 5 failed to be influenced by time‐of‐day. This suggests that the beneficial effect of time‐of‐day may be limited to a single expression of muscular power and fails to advantage performance during repeated sprints.  相似文献

This study was designed to examine time-of-day effects on markers of cardiac functional capacity during a standard progressive cycle exercise test. Fourteen healthy, untrained young males (mean?±?SD: 17.9?±?0.7 yrs of age) performed identical maximal cycle tests in the morning (08:00–11:00?h) and late afternoon (16:00–19:00?h) in random order. Cardiac variables were measured at rest, submaximal exercise, and maximal exercise by standard echocardiographic techniques. No differences in morning and afternoon testing values at rest or during exercise were observed for oxygen uptake, heart rate, cardiac output, or markers of systolic and diastolic myocardial function. Values at peak exercise for Vo2 at morning and afternoon testing were 3.20?±?0.49 and 3.24?±?0.55?L min?1, respectively, for heart rate 190?±?11 and 188?±?15?bpm, and for cardiac output 19.5?±?2.8 and 19.8?±?3.5?L min?1. Coefficients of variation for morning and afternoon values for these variables were similar to those previously published for test-retest reproducibility. This study failed to demonstrate evidence for significant time-of-day variation in Vo2max or cardiac function during standard progressive exercise testing in adolescent males. Muscle force production and power output in active males, regardless of the site of measurement (hand, leg, or back), are higher in the evening than the morning. This diurnal variation is attributed to motivational, peripheral, and central factors and higher core and, possibly, muscle temperatures in the evening. This study investigated whether decreasing evening resting rectal temperatures to morning values, by immersion in a water tank, leads to muscle force production and power output becoming equal to morning values in motivated subjects. Ten healthy active males (mean?±?SD: age, 22.5?±?1.3 yrs; body mass, 80.1?±?7.8?kg; height, 1.72?±?0.05?m) completed the study, which was approved by the local ethics committee of the university. The subjects were familiarized with the techniques and protocol and then completed three sessions (separated by at least 48?h): control morning (07:30?h) and evening (17:30?h) sessions (with an active 5-min warm-up on a cycle ergometer at 150?W) and then a further session at 17:30?h but preceded by an immersion in cold water (~16.5?°C) to lower rectal temperature (Trec) to morning values. During each trial, three measures of grip strength, isokinetic leg strength measurements (of knee flexion and extension at 1.05 and 4.19?rad?s?1 through a 90° range of motion), and three measures of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) on an isometric dynamometer (utilizing the twitch-interpolation technique) were performed. Trec, rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and thermal comfort (TC) were also measured after the subjects had reclined for 30?min at the start of the protocol and prior to the measures for grip, isokinetic, and isometric dynamometry. Muscle temperature was taken after the warm-up or water immersion and immediately before the isokinetic and MVC measurements. Data were analyzed using general linear models with repeated measures. Trec values were higher at rest in the evening (by 0.37?°C; p?<?0.05) than the morning, but values were no different from morning values immediately after the passive pre-cooling. However, Trec progressively decreased throughout the experiments, this being reflected in the subjects’ ratings of thermal comfort. Muscle temperatures also displayed significant diurnal variation, with higher values in the evening (by 0.39?°C; p?<?0.05). Right grip strength, isometric peak power, isokinetic knee flexion and extension for peak torque and peak power at 1.05?rad?s?1, and knee extension for peak torque at 4.19?rad?s?1 all showed higher values in the evening (a range of 3–14%), and all other measures of strength or power showed a statistical trend to be higher in the evening (0.10?>?p?>?0.05). Pre-cooling in the evening significantly reduced force or power variables towards morning values. In summary, effects of time of day were seen in some measures of muscle performance, in agreement with past research. However, in this population of motivated subjects, there was evidence that decreasing evening Trec to morning values by coldwater immersion decreased muscle strength to values similar to those found in the morning. It is concluded that diurnal changes in muscle performance are linked to diurnal changes in Trec. (Author correspondence: B.J.Edwards@ljmu.ac.uk)  相似文献
