Nikoides schmitti is widely distributed along the Atlantic coast of the Americas, from North Carolina to Bahia, Brazil and Cuba and Guadeloupe; however, the knowledge about their reproductive biology is poorly known. In this study, data such as sex ratio, fecundity, size and volume of the embryos, and brood loss of material collected in July 1997 from Mahahual, Quintana Roo, Mexico is provided. The sample of 728 specimens had a sex ratio of 0.40 males per female. Fecundity (N = 31) of ovigerous females (Stage I) varied from 219 to 817, with an average of 432 ± 177 embryos. The newly extruded embryos of N. schmitti were small (0.41 ± 0.030 mm) and similar in size to those reported for other species of the genus. The mean volume of the embryos changed significantly during development, increasing 60.9% from stages I to III. Embryo loss during incubation was estimated in 32.9%. This study provides baseline information about the reproduction of N. schmitti and contributes to a better knowledge of this species little studied.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe the population structure and some reproductive traits of Urocaris longicaudata collected in Laguna de Términos, Campeche, Mexico in October and December 2009, and February and April 2010. A total of 2977 specimens were collected of which 1596 were females (including 276 ovigerous) and 1381 were males. Females were larger than males (2.03 ± 0.63 vs. 1.97 ± 0.44 mm carapace length (CL), respectively). The overall sex-ratio differed significantly from 1:1. The reproductive period was apparently continuous, with most ovigerous females recorded from December 2009 to April 2010. The estimated size at sexual maturity in females was 2.90 ± 0.64 mm CL. A significant and positive linear relationship between CL and realised fecundity was estimated. The number of embryos ranged from 33 to 320. The average volume of newly spawned embryos was 0.038 ± 0.009 mm3 and that of those near hatching was 0.062 ± 0.012 mm3, representing a 63.15% increase throughout embryogenesis. The females lost on average 27.6% of the initially produced embryos during the incubation period, which favoured the survival of the remaining embryos. This is the first report on any biological trait of U. longicaudata along the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.  相似文献

To provide updated information on life history for improved fishery management, the reproductive cycle of the finetooth shark Carcharhinus isodon from Northwest Atlantic (NWA) populations was investigated by examining temporal changes in morphology and histology of reproductive organs. Changes in plasma concentrations of gonadal sex hormones in relation to reproductive stage were also examined. Increases in testis width, epididymis head width, plasma testosterone concentrations and occurrence of mature spermatozoa were observed in male sharks between December and April, suggesting a seasonal pattern in reproduction that culminates with copulatory activity in May. Increases in maximum follicular diameter, oviducal gland width, plasma 17β-estradiol concentrations and occurrence of vitellogenic follicles were observed in non-pregnant female sharks during the same time period along with the occurrence of newly pregnant females in May, demonstrating strong synchronicity between male and female reproductive cycles. Pregnant females bearing full-term embryos were also observed in May, indicating that parturition occurs between mid-May and early June and gestation requires 12 months. Only transient temporal changes in follicle size and oviducal gland width were observed in pregnant females, indicating that reproductive periodicity is biennial; nonetheless, a single female exhibiting signs of concurrent vitellogenesis and pregnancy was observed. Mean brood size ± S.D. was 3.9 ± 0.9 offspring/female. Fecundity was not significantly correlated with female size, in part due to an unexpectedly high rate of early embryo mortality, which occurred in 11% of pregnant females, and was more common in larger individuals. Changes in ovarian activity during mid-pregnancy were observed, suggesting possible roles for the ovary in regulating some aspects of early to mid-gestation. This study confirms that earlier characterizations of the reproductive cycle and fecundity in NWA finetooth sharks remain valid for use in fishery management. This study also highlights unusual features of finetooth shark pregnancy (e.g., early embryo death, mid-pregnancy changes in ovarian function) that may have broader relevance to understanding elasmobranch reproduction.  相似文献

Individuals of the F5 and FM2 cytotypes of the Sceloporus grammicus complex form a narrow zone of parapatric hybridization near Tulancingo, Hidalgo, Mexico. Reproductive parameters were examined among chromosomally parental and hybrid females to assess the degree to which reduced clutch size is correlated with the level of chromosomal heterozygosity. Although clutch size in the two parental groups was highly correlated with female body size, this was not the case for females with intermediate karyotypes. These females displayed increased levels of infertility manifested as smaller clutches and as inviable embryos. F1 females produced the smallest average clutches and suffered the most precipitous fecundity loss (up to 75%). The number of heterozygous marker chromosomes and heterozygosity at chromosome 2 had significant effects on the number of viable embryos. Analysis of embryo karyotypes revealed the production of triploid offspring and an excess number of embryos heterozygous at chromosome 1. Differences in viability, among females heterozygous for the same number of chromosomes, suggest that genetic background of the female and/or sire may be an important factor in determining reproductive success.  相似文献

Hermit crabs are soft-abdomen decapods. They depend upon gastropod shells for protection, with the latter influencing growth rate, mortality and reproduction. The present work aims to provide information about the biology and reproduction of Pagurus brevidactylus in a conservation area in Brazilian southeastern littoral. The material was sampled through active searching by SCUBA diving and refuge traps. We analyzed population structure, fecundity, reproductive output (RO), reproductive periodicity and shell utilization for P. brevidactylus. In total, 54 males, 18 non-ovigerous females, 34 ovigerous females and 10 juveniles were sampled. The females had a fecundity of 69.5 ± 65 eggs, which was lower than that compared to other populations from different localities. The RO ranged from 1.48% to 63.04%, with a mean of 26.75 ± 18.23%. There was a positive relationship between egg number and female size. The animals had continuous reproduction, but they reached smaller maximum sizes when compared with other populations. The shell occupation pattern was also different from other localities, the shells of Phrontis alba being the most occupied; this shell has a smaller size when compared to others that P. brevidactylus occupies in other localities. Therefore, P. alba could have had limited the growth and reproduction of P. brevidactylus.  相似文献

A dearth of basic biological information for wahoo, Acanthocybium solandri, currently hinders the ability of scientists and managers to assess population sustainability and appropriately manage the dramatically increasing global catch. This study examined the gonads of 382 wahoo collected off eastern Australia during 2008–2011 to quantify their reproductive biology in the region. The overall sex ratio of the sample was 3.2:1 (females:males), however this differed significantly among fishing sectors and areas. The estimated fork length at which 50 % of female wahoo reach maturity was 1,046 mm. Similar to the Atlantic Ocean, female wahoo have a protracted summer spawning season during October-February. The mean spawning frequency of female wahoo was uncertain but may be approximately 2–3 days, with evidence of fish actively spawning on consecutive days. Batch fecundity of females was positively correlated with fish size and estimates ranged between 0.65 and 5.12 million oocytes. Relative fecundity was estimated at 122.0 (±9.7) oocytes per gram of ovary free body weight and did not differ with fish size or throughout the spawning season. Estimation of reproductive parameters such as size- and age-at-maturity may facilitate the construction of per-recruit stock assessments of wahoo in the region.  相似文献

A full analysis of the reproductive biology of the isopod Excirolana braziliensis Richardson 1912 was conducted in a sandy beach of Uruguay, located at the southernmost edge of its distributional range in the Atlantic Ocean. Reproductive and recruitment periods of E. braziliensis were concentrated in austral summer. Females with oostegites appeared in November, whereas total biomass, individual sizes and fecundity of ovigerous females peaked between December and January. These concurrent traits were responsible for the significant peak of juveniles in January. The size at maturity was 9.88 mm. Four embryonic developmental stages were described and identified: mean length linearly increased from stages I to III, whereas dry weight exponentially decreased from stages I to IV. The high reproductive output (0.41–0.58), reported for the first time in this isopod, exceeds the rates documented for other isopods. Reproduction of E. braziliensis at the southern edge of its range is semelparous: females produce one brood during the reproductive season, exhaust their energy reserves during incubation, and probably die at the end of the reproductive season. A macroscale comparison suggests that E. braziliensis at the southern edge of its range counteracts its narrow reproductive period by a short incubation period with larger individual mature female and embryo sizes, higher fecundity and a higher percentage of ovigerous females than in subtropical and tropical populations. These extreme reproductive indicators could be attributed to the internal retention of embryos that assures offspring survival, coupled with a high adaptation capability to environmental variations across its range.  相似文献

Hemiculter leucisculus are multiple spawners with indeterminate fecundity, although previous fecundity estimates have assumed a determinate spawning pattern. Batch fecundity and spawning frequency of H. leucisculus were studied in Erhai Lake, China, in which the fish, as an exotic species, has become a successful colonizer. Spawning frequency was 16.05 %, as determined from the percent of females with postovulatory follicles 12 to 36 h old during the peak reproductive period (from May 27 to August 8). The average interval between spawning was 6.2 days and there were more than 16 total spawning batches during the peak reproductive period. The average batch fecundity (mean ± SD) was 11,934?±?5,921 hydrated oocytes in 40 females (standard length or SL: 9.1–14.4 cm), while relative batch fecundity was 560?±?137 eggs g?1 wet weight. The total potential annual fecundity was approximately 190,944 oocytes over the whole spawning season and was much higher than the estimated standing stock (31,585 oocytes) of yolked oocytes (36 females, SL: 9.5–16.2 cm) at the beginning of the spawning season in April 2010. This high annual fecundity is likely to have contributed to successful invasion of Erhai Lake by H. leucisculus.  相似文献

1. Fecundity of a Dikerogammarus villosus population at Spitz was studied in the Austrian Danube during the 3‐year period 2002–2004. Ovigerous females were absent in October and November, and extremely scarce in December when the reproductive season started again slowly. From January to September pre‐copulatory pairs and egg‐carrying females were present. The reproductive cycle lasted for 9–10 months. 2. Various pigmentation phenotypes of D. villosus have been described in the literature. However, no significant differences were found between the reproductive variables studied here and several colour morphs. Mating was size‐assortative; mean body length of males was about 1.3 times greater than that of their potential mates, and the wet weight was approximately twice as heavy. 3. The relationship between the number of embryos per clutch and the wet weight of females was described by a 3‐parameter power equation. The population mean was 43 eggs with a range of five to 194 eggs. Eighty‐two specimens from 1359 D. villosus females had more than 100 eggs: the smallest of these females was 12 mm long (30 mg) wet weight, and the largest, which was 18 mm long (91 mg), had 194 eggs in embryonic development stage 4. 4. Numbers of embryos in developmental stages 2 (early egg stage) and 7 (newly hatched neonates) differed significantly with body wet weight of ovigerous females (P < 0.05). For an average female in the range 10–12 mm (20–30 mg) the number of juveniles in the brood pouch was 74% of the number of stage 2 eggs. This value can be interpreted as the survival rate of eggs. 5. The overall mean egg volume (EV, ±95% CL) of stage 2 eggs of D. villosus was 0.05 ± 0.001 mm3, and EV increased significantly at each stage of development. At stage 6, egg volume had increased by a factor of 2.6, and averaged 0.13 ± 0.001 mm3. In comparison, G. fossarum and G. roeseli had significantly larger eggs in all developmental stages. 6. Mean egg size of D. villosus (0.063 mm3) was maximal in January. For D. villosus (and G. roeseli) the minimum mean egg size occurred in September. In contrast to G. fossarum and G. roeseli, a second peak in egg size was not observed for D. villosus, and egg size fell more or less successively from January to September. 7. A simple index of fecundity was calculated from the number of stage 2 eggs divided by the female's wet weight. The highest values were observed in April and May, when females from the overwintering generation grew to their maximum body size. Thus the release of a large number of neonates corresponds with the availability of plentiful food and rising water temperatures for juvenile growth in the spring. The lowest value occurred in December. In June the small females of a summer generation appeared, with a naturally low fecundity. 8. The relationship between brood development time and water temperature was studied in the laboratory at a series of constant temperatures. At 16 °C, mean brood development time was 14 days for D. villosus, compared with about 3 weeks for the indigenous species. At 10 °C, mean brood development time was 24 days in D. villosus, compared with 40 days in G. fossarum and 44 days in G. roeseli. At 4 °C it was 1.8 and 3.5 times longer in G. fossarum and G. roeseli. 9. The number of offspring produced by a single clutch from a large female D. villosus is considerably higher than the total numbers produced by the indigenous freshwater gammarids, such as G. fossarum, G. roeseli and G. pulex, during their life‐spans of 1.5–2 years in seven to nine successive broods. Only one or two large ovigerous D. villosus would probably be enough to start a new population. A potentially high reproductive capacity, comparatively small eggs, optimal timing to release the maximum number of neonates per female in April/May, and a long reproductive cycle, together with rapid development of eggs, rapid growth to sexual maturation, short life span, tolerance to a wide range of environmental conditions, and exceptional predatory capabilities, all give the invasive Ponto‐Caspian gammarid an opportunity to become globally distributed in freshwater ecosystems of the temperate climate zone.  相似文献

The neotropical amphidromous shrimp Macrobrachium acanthurus is one of various freshwater crustaceans heavily exploited in the southwestern Atlantic. Fecundity (nº early embryos female?1) was examined during 2007 at four different localities (Iguape, Registro, Sete Barras, and Eldorado) along a stretch of river extending over 85?km (Ribeira de Iguape, São Paulo State, Brazil). Also, fertility (nº hatched larvae female?1) was examined at one locality (Registro) during 2009–2010. Fecundity (mean?±?SD: 5191?±?2635; range: 1086–13,014 embryos female?1) did not vary throughout the segment of river studied. Fecundity increased with female body size (carapace length, CL). However, fecundity scaled negatively with shrimp body size; females produce disproportionably fewer eggs with a unit increase in CL. The conditions explaining the negative allometric relationship between fecundity and female body size in M. acanthurus remain to be addressed. Nevertheless, natural food constraints limiting the ability of large but not small females to acquire enough resources to produce and fill their gonads with oocytes represents a plausible explanation for the negative scaling of fecundity with body size. Fertility varied between 545 and 12,465 hatched larvae female?1 with an average (±SD) of 3981 (± 2693) and increased isometrically with a unit increase in female body size. M. acanthurus has an average fecundity and fertility that represents one of the extremes regarding the trade-off between fecundity/fertility and egg-size reported for caridean shrimps. All of this information needs to be considered in assessing shrimp stocks and establishing a sustainable management plan for this exploited species in the southwestern Atlantic.  相似文献

The maturity and reproduction of the Atlantic angel shark Squatina dumeril were assessed using 77 females (29·2–110·4 cm total length; LT) and 269 males (58·7–108·2 cm LT) harvested by artisanal gillnetters off Venezuela. The biased sex ratio implied segregation or sex‐specific gear selectivity. Based on the development of the reproductive tract, 50% LT at sexual maturity (LT50, mean ± s.e .) for females and males were estimated at 86·14 ± 0·64 and 81·55 ± 0·12 cm, respectively. Uterine fecundity ranged between one and six and with a maximum embryo size of 25·7 cm LT. Gravid females were observed from August to December, including those close to parturition and while the gestation period was not confirmed, the size of ovarian follicles among some specimens implied protraction. The low fecundity of the species supports close monitoring of catches.  相似文献

Effects of polyandry versus monogamy were assessed for the beetle Phoracantha semipunctata (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) by comparing measures of female reproductive success, including fecundity, egg viability, time until eclosion, and clutch size. The effect of intermittent presence or absence of a male was also evaluated. Polyandry was detrimental to female reproductive success in comparison to monogamy. Fecundity, egg viability, and clutch size were lower, and time to eclosion were increased for eggs from females with multiple mates compared with monogamous females. Intermittent presence of males had no effect on female reproductive success. Possible explanations for the decreased fecundity experienced by females with multiple mates include sperm competition intensity, costs of male harassment, and exceeding the optimal mating frequency. Females may reduce costs associated with polyandry by spending less time on host logs where mating occurs.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of Odontostilbe pequira was studied aiming to determining differences in population structure, reproductive tactics and correlating the reproductive period with rainfall, temperature and level of the Paraguay River, in the southern Pantanal, Brazil. Data were obtained for 623 individuals (366 females and 257 males), and of these, 253 females and 126 males were dissected for reproductive analysis. No significant variation was observed in the distribution of standard length and total weight between the sexes. The sex ratio was 1.42:1 (female: male), but the ratio did not differ over most months and between most length classes. The reproductive period was long (10 months). No correlation was found between the gonadosomatic index (GSI) of both sexes with water temperature and rainfall over the months analyzed. Males showed no significant association between the GSI and river level, but a marginally significant correlation was observed for females. Moreover, an effect of the mean historical river level on GSI was observed in both sexes, indicating that the flooding regime drive the reproductive activity, which proportions spawnings even when rainfall and temperature levels are low. Length at first maturity of the females was 24.2 mm and of the males 22.2 mm, with a significant difference between the sexes. The mean absolute fecundity was 181.4 oocytes/female, while mean relative fecundity was 0.544 oocytes/mg. Absolute fecundity was positively related to total weight, gonad weight and standard length. The mean diameter of the mature oocytes was 0.46 mm and the frequency distribution of the diameters showed various modes, indicating a multiple spawning. Thus, the reproductive tactics of O. pequira was characterized as “opportunistic strategist”, with reproductive activity strongly associated with the flood pulse.  相似文献

In adult animals, the significance of circadian clocks in the regulation of physiology is well established. However, the physiological roles of embryonic clock genes on early embryo development, implantation and perinatal survival are still unclear. In the present study, using genotyping, embryo culture and transfer, the early embryo development, implantation, and perinatal survival of Bmal1+/+, Bmal1+/? and Bmal1?/? embryo were studied. At cleavage stage, the genotype ratio of Bmal1+/+, Bmal1+/? and Bmal1?/? embryo was 1:1.97:0.95, respectively (p > 0.05). Morula or early blastocyst developmental ratio was 83.8 ± 14.3, 87.1 ± 9.2 and 88.7 ± 14.5%, respectively (p > 0.05). After transferring of the three types of embryos to pseudopregnant wild-type mice, the implantation sites 4 days later was 7.7 ± 0.9, 7.2 ± 1.2 and 7.5 ± 0.5 (n = 4, F = 0.265, p = 0.773). Mean litter size of the mice after transferring with the three types of embryos was 5.5, 6.0, and 3.0 (n = 3, F = 30.3, p = 0.001). The development of Bmal1 null embryos was not impaired in preimplantation and early implantation stages, but the litter size had a trend to decrease.  相似文献

We studied the shrimp Exhippolysmata oplophoroides in southeastern Brazil (Macaé, 22º37″S; Ubatuba, 23º55″S; and Cananéia, 25º53″S) to test the hypotheses that (1) females should have the same reproductive output and fecundity at the regional scale, and (2) these reproductive parameters can vary among regions. Maximum carapace length (Macaé = 13.1 mm, Ubatuba = 12.8, Cananéia = 16), fecundity, and reproductive output differed among regions (Ancova, p < 0.05). Females in Cananéia exhibited the highest reproductive output/fecundity (18.6%/5230 embryos), followed by those in Macaé (16.0%/4365 embryos) and Ubatuba (12.6%/1206 embryos). We found that fecundity/reproductive output varies inversely with the length of the reproductive season, i.e. a considerable amount of energy is allocated during seasonal spawning periods in subtropical regions such as Cananéia. Previous studies have proved that E. oplophoroides is able to reproduce continuously in Ubatuba, with probably minor but continuous energy investment in reproduction occurring in this tropical region. In contrast, although Macaé is located at tropical latitude, it is under the influence of Cabo Frio upwelling that alters the water’s physical properties via cold water intrusion. This process may be a determining factor in the spawning seasonality of Macaé’s shrimp population, justifying the higher reproductive output recorded here than in Ubatuba.  相似文献

The fecundity and life table parameters of Campoletis sonorensis females were measured using thirty 4-day-old Trichoplusia ni larvae daily at 24°C, 60% RH and a photoperiod of 12 h L:12 h D. The mean longevity was 34.5±2.8 days, the mean oviposition period was 22.7±1.9 days, and the mean constant oviposition period and the mean post-oviposition period were 15.9±1.3 and 11.9±2.2 days, respectively. The mean realised fecundity and the mean fertility differed significantly at 66.9±7.8 and 60.4±7.8 parasitoids per female, respectively. The mean sex ratio for the mean oviposition period (23 days) was 0.13±0.07, indicating a highly female biased ratio. The life table parameters were: intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m), 0.135 female/day; gross reproductive rate (GRR), 50.30; net reproductive rate (R o), 49.96; finite capacity for increase (λ), 1.14 female/day; mean generation time (T), 28.97 days; doubling time (DT), 5.13; capacity for increase (r c), 0.33; and cohort generation time (T c), 11.69. Campoletis sonorensis may be a suitable candidate for a biocontrol program of T. ni populations mostly because the primary selection criterion, rm , obtained for this parasitoid can be similar to or larger than the rate obtained for T. ni.  相似文献

Based on the gross anatomic examination of 218 adult female reproductive tracts, we characterised the reproductive biology of the wild collared peccary in the Northeastern Peruvian Amazon. Collared peccary apparently breed year round in the Northeastern Peruvian Amazon and the number of pregnant females was 92 (42.2%). Estimations suggest 1.12 births/year and a yearly reproductive production of 1.98 piglets per pregnant female. Collared peccary females presented a mean ovulation rate of 2.25 ± 0.58 CLs, a litter size of 1.77 ± 0.48 embryos or foetuses and a reproductive wastage of 0.45 ± 0.65 (21.3%) oocytes or embryos per pregnant female. A phenomenon of embryo migration was observed in 31.8% of pregnant females. This study provides reproductive information that should be taken into account in management plans.  相似文献

The ability of any species to support high hunting pressures depends on its reproductive efficiency. Based on the gross anatomic examination of 208 adult female reproductive tracts, we characterised the reproductive biology of the wild white-lipped peccary in the northeastern Peruvian Amazon. White-lipped peccary apparently bred year round in the northeastern Peruvian Amazon, and the number of pregnant females was 80 (38.4%). Mean ovulation rate was 2.09 ± 0.47 CLs, and litter size was 1.60 ± 0.49 embryos or foetuses per pregnant female. A phenomenon of embryo migration was observed in the 27.5% of pregnant females. Estimations suggest 0.89 births per year and a yearly reproductive production of 1.42 piglets per pregnant female. Females in the late pregnancy stage showed a higher hunting vulnerability that could be an important restrictive factor for the reproductive efficiency of the wild white-lipped peccary populations in the Peruvian Amazon.  相似文献

The magnitude of variations in reproductive traits of Palaemon macrodactylus females throughout a breeding season was studied in a non-native population at Mar del Plata harbor, Argentina. Fecundity, egg size, reproductive output, weight and elemental composition of eggs, and larvae were analyzed in females collected at the beginning, in the mid point, and near the end of a reproductive season and designated as early, middle season, and late females. The highest reproductive output was observed in early females, while the highest fecundity and egg volume occurred in middle season females. Eggs and larvae showed larger body mass in early than in late females. Embryos from early females contained and consumed more carbon during development than embryos from late females, and they also used part of the available nitrogen. Differences in reproduction were observed among the three groups of females. On the one hand, late females matured early but had a poor first reproduction, with few embryos and high egg loss; however, they had longer reproductive life and an enhanced reproductive output in the following season when they became early females. On the other hand, females collected at the midpoint in the reproductive season matured later and had the highest fecundity and egg volume. In addition, larvae with different characteristics resulted from each type of female and were presumably well adapted to the conditions prevailing at the moment they hatched. The extended reproductive period and the diversity of embryos and larvae produced may favor the invading ability of the species.  相似文献
