We have studied the pattern of association between the season of conception and cytosolic low molecular weight phosphotyrosine phosphatase (ACP1) genetic polymorphism in 329 consecutively newborn infants from the population of Penne and 361 consecutively newborn infants from the population of Rome. In addition, 329 mothers were studied in the population of Penne. A concordant, highly significant association was observed in the two populations between ACP1 parameters and the season of conception of newborn infants. The total activity of ACP1 shows a minimum in infants conceived in January–February and a maximum in those conceived at the end of the solar year. Analysis of the joint mother-newborn ACP1 distribution in relation to the season of fertilisation has shown that among mothers carrying ACP1*A (the allele showing the lowest activity), the proportion of newborns carrying this allele is higher in those conceived in the first months of the year than in those conceived subsequently. Since ACP1 probably functions as a phosphotyrosine phosphatase and as a flavin mononucleotide phosphatase, low activity could enhance the metabolic rate and would be advantageous in a cold environment. The cycle of variation of ACP1 in infants follows the cycle of solar illumination. It is possible that individuals who have a genetic background allowing them to adapt easily and readily to seasonal demand are more successful in reproducing themselves. The population of zygotes conceived in a given season would therefore reproduce the pattern of gene combination more fit for that season. Received: 15 June 1997 / Accepted: 31 July 1997  相似文献

Many temperate insects take advantage of longer growing seasons at lower latitudes by increasing their generation number or voltinism. In some insects, development time abruptly decreases when additional generations are fit into the season. Consequently, latitudinal ‘sawtooth’ clines associated with shifts in voltinism are seen for phenotypes correlated with development time, like body size. However, latitudinal variation in voltinism has not been linked to genetic variation at specific loci. Here, we show a pattern in allele frequency among voltinism ecotypes of the European corn borer moth (Ostrinia nubilalis) that is reminiscent of a sawtooth cline. We characterized 145 autosomal and sex‐linked SNPs and found that period, a circadian gene that is genetically linked to a major QTL determining variation in post‐diapause development time, shows cyclical variation between voltinism ecotypes. Allele frequencies at an unlinked circadian clock gene cryptochrome1 were correlated with period. These results suggest that selection on development time to ‘fit’ complete life cycles into a latitudinally varying growing season produces oscillations in alleles associated with voltinism, primarily through changes at loci underlying the duration of transitions between diapause and other life history phases. Correlations among clock loci suggest possible coupling between the circadian clock and the circannual rhythms for synchronizing seasonal life history. We anticipate that latitudinal oscillations in allele frequency will represent signatures of adaptation to seasonal environments in other insects and may be critical to understanding the ecological and evolutionary consequences of variable environments, including response to global climate change.  相似文献

Many short‐lived organisms pass through several generations during favorable growing seasons, separated by inhospitable periods during which only small hibernating or estivating refugia remain. This induces pronounced seasonal fluctuations in population size and metapopulation structure. The first generations in the growing season will be characterized by small, relatively isolated demes whereas the later generations will experience larger deme sizes with more extensive gene flow. Fluctuations of this sort can induce changes in the amount of genetic variation in early season samples compared to late season samples, a classical example being the observations of seasonal variation in allelism in New England Drosophila populations by P.T. Ives. In this article, we study the properties of a structured coalescent process under seasonal fluctuations using numerical analysis of exact state equations, analytical approximations that rely on a separation of timescales between intrademic versus interdemic processes, and individual‐based simulations. We show that although an increase in genetic variation during each favorable growing season is observed, it is not as pronounced as in the empirical observations. This suggests that some of the temporal patterns of variation seen by Ives may be due to selection against deleterious lethals rather than neutral processes.  相似文献

We present a comprehensive dataset of hourly, daily, and monthly measurements of carbon isotope measurements of CO2 in canopy air from a temperate deciduous forest with the aim to identify the relevance of short-term variations in the isotopic signature of ecosystem respiration (13CR) and to understand its underlying physiological processes. We show that during daytime low vertical mixing inside the canopy can lead to decoupling of the air in the lower and upper canopy layer resulting in large spatial variation of 13C in CO2 of canopy air. Intercept of Keeling Plots also showed large temporal variation (3.8) over the course of the day demonstrating that intercepts can differ between day and night and suggesting that choosing the right time for sampling is essential to capture the isotopic signature of ecosystem respiration (13CR). 13CR as obtained from night-time measurements showed large variation of up to 2.65 on a day-to-day basis, which was similar to the observed variation of 13CR over the seasonal cycle (3.08). This highlights the importance of short-term physiological processes within ecosystems for the isotopic composition of CO2 in the atmosphere, not reflected by bulk plant and soil organic samples. At daily and monthly time scales, 13CR increased with increasing ratio of vapour pressure deficit to photosynthetically active radiation, measured 4–5 days before. This suggests that ecosystem respiration was isotopically linked to assimilation. Furthermore, assimilates recently fixed in the canopy seem to form a labile carbon pool with a short mean residence time that is respired back to the atmosphere after 4–5 days.  相似文献

Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase has been studied in 5267 consecutive newborn infants from Sardinian population during a four years period. The proportion of G-6-PD deficient female infants is much higher in those conceived in the winter-spring than among those conceived in summer-autumn, resulting in a lower sex ratio among G-6-PD deficient infants conceived in winter-spring as compared to G-6-PD deficient infants conceived in the summer-autumn. The overall frequency of the gene for G-6-PD deficiency is much lower in infants conceived in the summer period than in infants conceived in the other seasons. A greater reproductive efficiency of G-6-PD deficient males in the winter-spring season and/or some effect at post zygotic level favouring the survival of heterozygous G-6-PD deficient females conceived in the winter-spring period could contribute to the pattern described. Fresh vegetables containing oxidative substances are more abundant in the spring time. These substances may interact with seasonal reproductive cycles influencing reproduction efficiency of G-6-PD deficient males and/or the relative survival rate of heterozygous female embryos.  相似文献

The present work reports a study of nine genetic polymorphic systems in the area of the Po Delta where malaria was endemic since the XIV century. Our data confirm some characteristics of this population already reported by other authors such as the high prevalence of thalassemia, the low prevalence of the rh (d) gene and the presence of G-6-PD deficiency. Among the other systems studied, i.e., AP, PGM1 ADA and AK, only AP frequencies of Po Delta population are significantly different from those of other continental Italian populations, the PC allele showing the lowest frequency so far observed.  相似文献

The method used by Fisher and Ford (1947) to study the spread of a gene in a natural population has been modified to analyze the variation in allele frequencies from generation to generation in a common experimental procedure. A further analysis has been developed that is more sensitive to directional trends in the allele frequency over generations, and its use in detecting the action of directional selection on gene frequency at a locus is discussed. The power of each of these statistical tests is calculated for a number of cases, and the tests are applied to sets of isozyme data from Drosophila pseudoobscura and Zea mays.  相似文献

In Newfoundland, babies with anencephaly are conceived most often in January, and those with spina bifida in August. These and previous observations suggest that (1) seasonal fluctuations are greatest when the population frequency is neither very high nor very low, and that (2) the peak season for conception of anencephalic babies may occur in any season except August-November in various populations, whereas for spina bifida seasonal peaks are confined almost exclusively to May-August.  相似文献

1. Here we examine how sex ratio variation in house sparrow broods interacts with other demographic traits and parental characteristics to improve the understanding of adaptive significance and demographic effects on variation in sex ratio. 2. The sex ratio in complete broods did not deviate significantly from parity (54.9% males). 3. There was sex-specific seasonal variation in the probability of recruitment. Male nestlings that hatched late in the breeding season had larger probability of surviving than early hatched males. 4. An adaptive adjustment of sex ratio should favour production of an excess of males late in the breeding season. Accordingly, the proportion of male offspring increased throughout the breeding season. 5. A significant nonlinear relationship was present between sex ratio and age of the female. However, there was no relationship between parental phenotype and standardized hatch day that could explain the observed seasonal change in sex ratio. 6. The sex-specific number of offspring recruited by a pair to subsequent generations was closely related to the brood sex ratio. 7. These results indicate an adaptive adjustment of sex ratio to seasonal variation in environmental conditions that affects the offspring fitness of the two sexes differently. Our results also suggest that such a sex ratio variation can strongly influence the demography and structural composition of small passerine populations.  相似文献

In the course of developing strategies to obtain a mutation in the aspartate semialdehyde dehydrogenase (asd) gene of Mycobacterium smegmatis, an efficient transposon trap was constructed which may be generally useful for the identification of transposable elements in mycobacteria. A DNA fragment containing the asd gene was replaced with an aminoglycoside phosphotransferase gene (aph) to generate a delta asd::aph allele. Attempts to replace the wild-type asd gene with the delta asd::aph allele were unsuccessful, suggesting that this deletion was lethal to the growth of M. smegmatis. The plasmid, pYUB215, which contains beta-galactosidase expressed from a mycobacteriophage promoter and delta asd::aph, was integrated into the chromosome of M. smegmatis by a homologous, single-crossover, recombination event. Visual screening for inactivation of the beta-galactosidase gene in the resulting strain allowed the isolation of a novel mycobacterial insertion element from M. smegmatis. This insertion element, which is unique to M. smegmatis, was designated IS1096 and transposes at a frequency of 7.2 x 10(-5) per cell in an apparently random fashion. IS1096 is 2,275 bp in length and contains two open reading frames which are predicted to encode proteins involved in transposition. This insertion element exhibits several characteristics that suggest it may be a useful tool for genetic analysis of mycobacteria, possibly including the study of mechanisms of pathogenesis.  相似文献

It has been recently reported that the prevalence of mutations associated with chloroquine resistance declined during the dry season. Fitness costs of drug resistance were suggested to be responsible for reduced survival of mutant parasites, and only parasites surviving chronic infections were transmitted at the onset of the rainy season. This implies that during seasonal transmission, significant changes can occur in allele frequency over the course of months, rather than years. The practical consequences of these findings for monitoring dynamics of drug-resistance markers are: (i) in areas of seasonal transmission, the sampling date matters; (ii) fluctuations in mutation frequencies might be explained by seasonality; and (iii) a much-awaited experimental determination of fitness costs of drug resistance becomes within reach.  相似文献

The striped fruit fly, Zeugodacus scutellata, exhibits generation overlap due to its relatively long lifespan. This study clarified the fly generations by age-grading technique and traced migration of local populations using genetic markers. Male adults were monitored using Cue-lure in two different places (Andong and Guri) of mainland Korea during the entire host cultivating period. They showed two occurrence peaks (from late July to early August and from mid-August to mid-October). A developmental model of Z. scutellata using rate summation method predicted four generations during this period. Pterin amounts in fly heads increased with adult age and indicated at least 3 cycles of age variation during the occurrence period with an additional adult generation after the third cycle. The additional peak was supported by field monitoring using protein diet supplemented with terpinyl acetate, which showed an additional occurrence peak during October. These seasonal populations were monitored through their migration by gene flow analysis using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. In each locality, three seasonal populations at July, August, and September were discrete. Although local populations were genetically discrete at July, they were not separate at late seasons except for Jeju populations. These results indicate the usefulness of the head pterin quantification in age-grading of adult populations and suggest that Z. scutellata occurs at least four generations a year. In addition, gene flow analysis using RAPD suggests frequent movements among local populations along with season progression.  相似文献

The 32-base pair deletion on the C–C chemokine receptor 5 gene (CCR5-delta32) is known as a protective allele against immune system disorders. We have studied this variation in Iranian multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and healthy controls. DNA samples were prepared from the whole blood of 254 patients with MS and 380 healthy controls. We amplified the fragment including the CCR5-delta32 polymorphism and visualized the products in a documentation system after agarose gel electrophoresis. Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA and Fisher’s exact tests with SPSS-v13 and STATA-v8 software. The delta32 allele was more frequent in MS patients when compared with controls (OR = 2.3, P < 0.0001). Also, we found a significant difference in the frequency of the delta32/delta32 genotype among patients and controls (OR = 7.4, P < 0.001). The mean age at onset and progression index was not significantly different between patients with various genotypes. According to our study, the delta32 allele of the CCR5 gene might be a predisposing factor for MS development in the Iranian population. However, there were no associations between this polymorphism and the clinical course of the disease in this study.  相似文献

A method is presented for estimating the age of an allele by use of its frequency and the extent of variation among different copies. The method uses the joint distribution of the number of copies in a population sample and the coalescence times of the intraallelic gene genealogy conditioned on the number of copies. The linear birth-death process is used to approximate the dynamics of a rare allele in a finite population. A maximum-likelihood estimate of the age of the allele is obtained by Monte Carlo integration over the coalescence times. The method is applied to two alleles at the cystic fibrosis (CFTR) locus, deltaF508 and G542X, for which intraallelic variability at three intronic microsatellite loci has been examined. Our results indicate that G542X is somewhat older than deltaF508. Although absolute estimates depend on the mutation rates at the microsatellite loci, our results support the hypothesis that deltaF508 arose < 500 generations (approximately 10,000 years) ago.  相似文献

BackgroundTo facilitate the interpretation of meningococcal meningitis epidemiology in the “African meningitis belt”, we aimed at obtaining serogroup-specific pooled estimates of incidence, carriage and case-carrier ratios for meningococcal meningitis in the African meningitis belt and describe their variations across the endemic, hyperendemic and epidemic context.MethodsWe conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies reporting serogroup-specific meningococcal meningitis monthly incidence and carriage in the same population and time period. Epidemiological contexts were defined as endemic (wet season, no epidemic), hyperendemic (dry season, no epidemic), and epidemic (dry season, epidemic).FindingsEight studies reporting a total of eighty pairs of serogroup-specific meningococcal meningitis incidence and carriage estimates were included in this review. For serogroup A, changes associated with the transition from endemic to hyperendemic incidence and from hyperendemic to epidemic incidence were 15-fold and 120-fold respectively. Changes in carriage prevalence associated with both transitions were 1-fold and 30-fold respectively.
For serogroup W and X, the transition from endemic to hyperendemic incidence involved a 4-fold and 1•1-fold increase respectively. Increases in carriage prevalence for the later transition were 7-fold and 1•7-fold respectively. No data were available for the hyperendemic-epidemic transition for these serogroups. Our findings suggested that the regular seasonal variation in serogroup A meningococcal meningitis incidence between the rainy and the dry season could be mainly driven by seasonal change in the ratio of clinical cases to subclinical infections. In contrast appearance of epidemic incidences is related to a substantial increase in transmission and colonisation and to lesser extent with changes in the case-carrier ratio.ConclusionSeasonal change in the rate of progression to disease given carriage together with variations in frequency of carriage transmission should be considered in models attempting to capture the epidemiology of meningococcal meningitis and mainly to predict meningitis epidemics in the African meningitis belt.  相似文献

A critical seasonal event for anadromous Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) is the time at which adults migrate from the ocean to breed in freshwater. We investigated whether allelic variation at the circadian rhythm genes, OtsClock1a and OtsClock1b, underlies genetic control of migration timing among 42 populations in North America. We identified eight length variants of the functionally important polyglutamine repeat motif (PolyQ) of OtsClock1b while OtsClock1a PolyQ was highly conserved. We found evidence of a latitudinal cline in average allele length and frequency of the two most common OtsClock1b alleles. The shorter 335 bp allele increases in frequency with decreasing latitude while the longer 359 bp allele increases in frequency at higher latitudes. Comparison to 13 microsatellite loci showed that 335 and 359 bp deviate significantly from neutral expectations. Furthermore, a hierarchical gene diversity analysis based on OtsClock1b PolyQ variation revealed that run timing explains 40.9 per cent of the overall genetic variance among populations. By contrast, an analysis based on 13 microsatellite loci showed that run timing explains only 13.2 per cent of the overall genetic variance. Our findings suggest that length polymorphisms in OtsClock1b PolyQ may be maintained by selection and reflect an adaptation to ecological factors correlated with latitude, such as the seasonally changing day length.  相似文献

Lactation has been proposed as the main proximate mechanism regulating female fertility among non–seasonally breeding mammals. Less is known about the effects of lactation upon fertility among seasonal species, where photoperiodic control of reproduction is widely believed to have an overriding influence. In neither case is it clear which of the different components of lactation influence fertility and in which ways. In this paper, the links between suckling patterns and the likelihood of conception during the following breeding season are examined. Data were collected at the Madingley rhesus colony, where reproduction is strictly seasonal. It is shown that fertility was depressed in lactating females when compared to non–lactating ones. Within the lactating group, mothers who suckled their infants frequently, and with a great number of independent nipple contacts in each bout, failed to conceive during the following breeding season. It is suggested that early differences in suckling patterns might reflect differences in maternal condition; and that differences during the breeding season may affect the quality of the ovulations. A considerable decrease in both the frequency of suckling and the number of nipple contacts per bout seemed to be required for conception to occur. On the other hand, neither the duration of the suckling bouts, nor the duration of the intervals between bouts, were found to be associated with the likelihood of conception.  相似文献

Drosophila ananassae, a desiccation and cold sensitive species, is abundant along the latitudinal gradient of the Indian subcontinent. Analysis of seasonally varying wild-caught flies showed two independent patterns of melanisation: (1) narrow to broad melanic stripes on three anterior abdominal segments only; (2) a novel body color pattern (dark vs. light background). We investigated the degree to which these two melanisation systems vary; first with latitude and secondly among seasons. There is a shallow latitudinal cline for percent striped melanisation as well as for frequency of body color alleles during the rainy season. The frequencies of body color alleles vary significantly across seasons in the northern populations i.e. the light allele occur abundantly (>0.94) during the rainy season while the frequency of the dark allele increases (0.22–0.35) during the dry season causing steeper clines during the dry season. By contrast, the low variations in abdominal stripes showed non-significant changes and the cline was similar across seasons. Furthermore, both types of melanisation patterns showed no plasticity with respect to temperature. The present study also investigated clines related to desiccation, heat and cold stress in D. ananassae females across seasons (rainy and dry) from nine latitudinal populations. The clines for stress related traits changes to steeper and non-linear during the dry season. Thus, latitudinal populations of D. ananassae differ in slope values of clines for stress related traits across seasons. This study reports seasonal changes in latitudinal clines of stress resistance traits as seen in a changing frequency of body color alleles of D. ananassae in northern locality, while in southern localities it remains constant. This is presumably the result of only minor seasonal changes in humidity and temperature in the South, whereas in the North seasonal climatic variability is much higher.  相似文献

Many species of songbirds exhibit dramatic seasonal variation in song output. Recent evidence suggests that seasonal changes in auditory processing are coincident with seasonal variation in vocal output. Here, we show, for the first time, that frequency selectivity and temporal resolution of the songbird auditory periphery change seasonally and in a sex-specific manner. Male and female house sparrows (Passer domesticus) did not differ in their frequency sensitivity during the non-breeding season, nor did they differ in their temporal resolution. By contrast, female house sparrows showed enhanced frequency selectivity during the breeding season, which was matched by a concomitant reduction of temporal resolution. However, males failed to show seasonal plasticity in either of these auditory properties. We discuss potential mechanisms generating these seasonal patterns and the implications of sex-specific seasonal changes in auditory processing for vocal communication.  相似文献

采用Hedley连续浸提法对三江平原湿地小叶章草甸土壤磷形态的季节动态进行研究,分析生长季土壤磷形态之间的相互转化及其可能的驱动机制。结果表明:小叶章草甸土壤有机磷(TPo)总量高于无机磷(TPi),NaOH溶液浸提的无机磷(NaOH-Pi)和有机磷形态(NaOH-Po)分别占总无机磷(TPi)和总有机磷(TPo)比重最大。各无机磷形态均有明显的季节变化,Resin-P和Conc.HCl-Pi季节变异性大,生长结束后含量较初期降低,其他形态无机磷含量有不同程度的升高。有机磷组分中NaOH-Po的季节波动最明显,生长季末期较初期含量降低,其他有机磷形态和Residual-P生长季初、末期含量变化不大,波动也相对较小。TP、TPo季节变化整体趋势相似,二者含量变化达到极显著相关。各无机磷形态变化主要受植物生长节律影响;水分、热量等环境条件也是磷的形态转化的重要驱动因子,并可能间接通过影响土壤动物、微生物等的活性推动土壤磷的循环。小叶章草甸土壤有机磷矿化释放的无机磷通常都首先被土壤金属氧化物固定,再经过无机磷之间的转化过程为生物利用,因此三江平原湿地土壤磷大量释放的可能性很小。  相似文献
