The relationship between otolith accretion and resting metabolic rate in juvenile Atlantic salmon during a change in temperature 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study confirmed earlier evidence for a correlation between otolith increment width and resting metabolic rate in the absence of somatic growth in Atlantic salmon parr. However, increment width responded more conservatively to a change in temperature than did resting metabolic rate. Consequently, the study demonstrated that although increment width varied with temperature the process governing accretion rate was not simply related to resting metabolic rate. 相似文献

The connection between standard metabolic rate ( R S ) and parasite-induced cataract was investigated in this study. Oxygen consumption rate and cataract of 1 year-old fish in three Atlantic salmon Salmo salar stocks: Lake Saimaa, River Neva and River Teno reared at the same fish farm were examined. The measurements were carried out in winter, in spring before transporting the fish to the outside raceways and in autumn after the raceway period. Fish were exposed to natural Diplostomum spp. infection especially during the raceway period. The prevalence of cataract-bearing fish and cataract intensities ( I C ) differed between the populations. Most cataract-bearing individuals were found in the Saimaa stock and, in addition, the Saimaa stock had higher I C than Neva and Teno stocks. These findings support the theory of a parasite being most infective to local population. The R S , however, differed also between the stocks, the Teno stock had higher values compared to the Neva stock in winter. Furthermore, R S and cataract intensity had a statistically significant positive correlation in autumn. Therefore, the results also reveal a possibility that parasite infection affects R S of the fish. 相似文献

Aggression and growth depression in juvenile Atlantic salmon: the consequences of individual variation in standard metabolic rate 总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10
In aquaculture, competitive interactions for food are a major source of growth rate variation, since they result in aggressive individuals acquiring a disproportionate amount of food and growing faster. Consequently, such competition increases the variance and skew of the size distribution of fish. In Atlantic salmon Salmo salar acquaculture, rearing is often initiated with juveniles of uniform size. However, the initial factors allowing fish to out-compete others of the same size is unclear. This study shows that individual differences in standard metabolic rate (SMR) may contribute to differences in aggression between juvenile Atlantic salmon. Fish were segregated into three holding tanks on the basis of differences in relative SMR aggression was highest in the tank containing high SMR fish, and lowest in a low SMR group. However, there were no significant differences in mean growth between the three treatments, although the skew of the size distribution was much less in the low SMR group than in the high SMR group. Therefore, although mean growth was not improved in the low SMR group by excluding high SMR fish, their growth subsequently showed less variability, possibly as a consequence of fewer despotic individuals gaining disproportionate access to food. 相似文献

Heart rate as an indicator of metabolic rate and activity in adult Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
M. C. Lucas 《Journal of fish biology》1994,44(5):889-903
Telemetered heart rate (fH) was examined as an indicator of activity and oxygen consumption rate (VO2) in adult, cultivated, Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. Heart rate was measured during sustained swimming in a flume for six fish at 10° C [mean weight, 1114 g; mean fork length (f. l.), 50·6 cm] and seven fish at 15° C (mean weight, 1119 g; mean f. l., 50·7 cm) at speeds of up to 2·2 body lengths/s. Semi–logarithmic relationships between heart rate and swimming speed were obtained at both temperatures. Spontaneously swimming fish in still water exhibited characteristic heart rate increases associated with activity. Heart rate and Vo2 were monitored simultaneously in a 575–1 circular respirometer for six fish (three male, three female) at 4° C (mean weight, 1804 g; mean F. L., 62· cm) and six fish (three male, three female) at 10° C (mean weight, 2045 g; mean f. l., 63·2 cm) during spontaneous but unquantified activity. Linear regressions were obtained by transforming data for both fH and Vo2 to log values. At each temperature, slopes of the regressions between fH and Vo2 for individual fishes were not significantly different, but in some cases elevations were. All differences in elevation were between male and female fish. There were no significant differences in regression slope or elevation for fish of the same sex at the two temperatures and so regressions were calculated for the sexes, pooling data from 4 and 10° C. There was no significant difference in the mean ± S. D. Vo2 between the sexes at 4° C (male, 66·0 ± 59·6 mgO2 kg?1 h?1; female, 88·0 ± 60·1 mgO2 kg?1 h?1) or 10° C (male, 166·2 ± 115·4 mgO2 kg?1 h?1; female, 169·2 ± 111–1 mgO2 kg?1h?1). Resting Vo2 (x?± s. d.) at 4°C was 36·7 ± 8.4 mgO2 kg?1 h?1, and 10° C was 72·8 ± 11·9 mgO2 kg?1 h?1. Maximum Vo2 (x?± S. D.) at 4° C was 250·6 ± 40·2 mgO2 kg?1 h?1, and at 10° C was 423·6 ± 25·2 mgO2 kg?1 h?1. Heart rate appears to be a useful indicator of metabolic rate over the temperature range examined, for the cultivated fish studied, but it is possible that the relationship for wild fish may differ. 相似文献

The influence of metabolic rate on otolith increment width in Atlantic salmon parr, Salmo salar L. 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
P. J. Wright 《Journal of fish biology》1991,38(6):929-933
The influence of metabolic rate on otolith accretion in Atlantic salmon parr was investigated by comparing oxygen consumption rate and increment width in fast and slow growing individuals. Increment width was found to be positively correlated to mean daily oxygen consumption in both fast growing (S1) and slow growing (S2) parr. The results support previous suggestions that a process related to metabolic rate, rather than somatic growth, governs the rate of otolith accretion. 相似文献

Diel feeding rhythms and daily food consumption of juvenile Atlantic salmon in the River Alta, northern Norway 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Atlantic salmon fry (0+) sampled from the River Alta exhibited only minor differences in stomach content weights and feeding rates throughout diel periods, but feeding rates were generally lowest at night. In contrast, salmon parr (1+ to 3+) had large diel fluctuations in stomach content weight, with the largest weights usually being recorded during the night and early morning. Accordingly, their feeding rates were highest at night. This nocturnal feeding pattern was consistent throughout all sampling occasions, and appeared to reflect a persistent feeding periodicity in the salmon parr. The daily food consumption rates of both fry and parr were highest during midsummer and decreased towards autumn. 相似文献

The effects of initial length and body curvature on shrinkage of juvenile Atlantic salmon during freezing 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Fork length was measured in two groups of salmon parr (32–139 mm, frozen in a straight posture and frozen in a curved posture) before (L1 ) and after (L2 ) freezing and thawing. All the fish shrank. The decrease in length was significantly greater in the curved fish than the straight fish. The absolute reduction in length (L1 –L2 ) was related directly to L1 , whereas the percentage reduction in length [(L1 –L2 )/L1 × 100] was related inversely to L1 . 相似文献

The feeding behaviour of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in the Sainte‐Marguerite River, Quebec, Canada, varied with the characteristics of turbulent flow. Simulations indicated that juveniles would decrease their swimming costs during attacks by 19·8% in low and by 31·1% in high turbulent conditions by initiating movements in low‐speed flow events. The real swimming costs did not differ from the swimming costs estimated for a situation where fish initiate their movements at randomly selected flow velocities. The juvenile Atlantic salmon did not seem to prefer low‐speed flow events when initiating their movements. The proportion of time used for movements by fish decreased with an increase in the mean and the s . d . of the flow velocity. 相似文献

The influence of life-history strategy on lipid metabolism in overwintering juvenile Atlantic salmon 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
From November to May, the lipid mass in the viscera and carcass of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar that were undergoing smolt transformation prior to seaward migration ('early migrants') were significantly greater than those of their siblings that would delay migration for at least a further year. During winter (November-February), the depletion of lipid associated with the viscera was significantly greater in early migrants, whilst lipid depletion in the remaining carcass was greater in delayed migrants. Early migrants continued to deplete both lipid compartments in spring (February-May), whereas delayed migrants depleted visceral lipid but replenished carcass lipid over the same period. Fatty acid accumulation rates (a measure of storage lipid synthesis rates) were two to six times greater in visceral than in carcass lipid throughout the study, suggesting that lipid turnover is much more rapid in the viscera. There were no differences in fatty acid accumulation rates between migrant groups in November, despite the much lower food consumption rate of delayed migrants at that time, suggesting that these fish allocated a larger proportion of their nutritional resources to lipid synthesis. In the carcass lipid of early migrants, and in both the visceral and carcass lipid of delayed migrants, the fatty acid accumulation rate was negatively correlated with lipid mass. Fatty acid accumulation rates increased from November to February in both visceral and carcass lipid in the two migrant groups. The fatty acid accumulation rate in carcass lipid was significantly higher in delayed migrants than in early migrants in February, but not in May. These results support the hypothesis that life history strategies involving rapid growth will result in a relatively low allocation of resources to lipid reserves. 相似文献

Within smolt ages there was a strong negative correlation between pre- and post-smolt growth in wild three-sea-winter female Atlantic salmon Salmo salar . This indicates that trait values providing, or resulting from, increased growth in one environment may cause growth to decrease in the other, potentially constraining growth rate evolution. 相似文献

Migratory behaviour of post-smolt Atlantic salmon during initial stages of seaward migration 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The movements of 24 hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts, with miniature acoustic transmitters (pingers) implanted surgically, were determined after release in the coastal waters of Passamaquoddy Bay (mean tide range 6 m), New Brunswick, Canada, to describe the first stages of seaward migration. Automated pinger detection at fixed sites, and pinger location and tracking by boat were used. Post-smolts left the release area rapidly, and the majority moved to open waters of the bay within several tidal cycles. Initially, post-smolts moved with a seaward orientation on ebb tides and held positions on flood tides. Their movements into open waters were diurnal, and the timing corresponded with the state of the tide during which they moved through a narrow channel. Post-smolts moved preferentially through this passageway with the aid of the tidal stream. Successful movements out through the channel occurred during ebb tides and any movements back in were during flood tides. Ground speed of fish moving through the channel was 4·2 body lengths s−1 and faster than the tidal stream velocities in the channel. The relative velocity of fish swimming through the channel was 2 body lengths s−1 . Post-smolt movement was indicative of active, directed swimming with a reliance on ebb-tide transport for migration through a coastal area with strong tidal currents. Some post-smolts moved seaward directly with no apparent period of acclimation for the transfer to the marine environment, whereas others delayed their departure. These differences in behaviour were probably related to asynchrony in smolting when fish were released. 相似文献

During the ice-free season in three subarctic rivers in northern Norway and Finland, Atlantic salmon parr Salmo salar exhibited significant diel fluctuations in stomach content weights in August and September, the largest weights being recorded consistently at 0300 hours. Accordingly, the feeding rate of the parr was highest during the night and lowest in daytime, whereas during the other periods of the ice-free season, no pronounced diel fluctuations in food intake occurred. The consistent nocturnal feeding periodicity in early autumn in subarctic rivers may be associated with benthic feeding and an increased availability of benthic prey at night. 相似文献

Standard metabolic rate ( R S ), specific growth rate ( G ) and aggressiveness were investigated in three Finnish populations of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (Neva, Saimaa and Teno), which were reared in identical hatchery conditions. The populations differed in their geographical origin and native habitat. There was a significant difference between populations in R S : the southernmost Neva population had higher values in R S than the northernmost Teno population. No difference was found in G or aggressiveness between the populations. G was found to have a significant positive association with aggressiveness and R S among the three populations, however, these results were not statistically significant after correction for multiple tests. There was no significant association between R S and aggressiveness. Higher metabolic rate of the most southern population Neva is suggested to be an adaptation to the more abundant food sources of the southern stream. 相似文献

Previously biomass predictions have been derived from simple weight—length relationships. This study measured a variety of truss and conventional dimensions covering the lateral body profile of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and, using regression analysis, developed a series of multifactor weight—lateral dimension relationships. Single-factor regression equations proved inadequate for predicting weight with percentage errors between real and estimated values ranging from −1.2±6.8% to 72.5 ± 225.6%. Fifty-two multifactor regression equations were generated that predicted accurately the weight of individual fish to within ±2% using combinations of conventional and truss measurements. Regression coefficients were found to be significantly different ( P <0.05) between Scottish and Norwegian strains, indicating morphological differences between the genetic groups. Norwegian fish were generally heavier for a given length compared to Scottish strains. This suggests that morphologically different strains of S. salar would require individual weight: lateral dimension relationships to be developed in order to predict biomass accurately to within commercially acceptable levels. 相似文献

Juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar subjected to three weeks of cooler temperatures were 8·5% smaller than controls at the end of the temperature manipulation, but had caught up in size 20 weeks later. The behavioural means is examined by which this catch-up or compensatory growth is achieved. While on average compensating fish did not spend more time feeding, dominant fish within each group gained more exclusive access to the feeding area during periods of catch-up growth. Therefore the extent to which compensatory growth could be achieved was dependent on both the social status of the individual and the dominants' ability to monopolize the food patch. 相似文献

It is well documented that prior residence confers advantagesin
territorial disputes, but its impact on other aspects ofbehavior and fitness
is less understood. We tested how priorresidence influences the subsequent
feeding behavior and growthperformance of dispersing Atlantic salmon fry
(Salmo salar)using experimental manipulations of residence in a
seminaturalstream tank. In replicated trials, groups of seven
"primary"fish were released into the stream tank 3 days ahead of
seven"secondary" fish. Standardized behavioral observations were
madeon each fish over the following 14 days, after which all fishwere
removed and measured. Primaries and secondaries were initiallythe same size
and body condition and exhibited the same degreeof site fidelity. However,
primaries darted higher into thewater column to intercept prey items, fed at
a higher rate, and subsequently grew faster. Larger fish (in terms of body
length)tended to be more dominant, and dominants grew faster than
subordinates. However, there was no difference in dominance between primaries
andsecondaries. These results suggest that the well-documentedadvantage of
early-emerging salmon fry over late-emerging frycannot be completely
attributed to intrinsic differences andthat the advantage is partly mediated
via a prior residenceeffect. Furthermore, prior residents gain foraging
advantageswithout necessarily becoming more dominant. 相似文献

In fry, 1- and 2-year old juvenile Atlantic salmon, relatively small superficial red muscle fibres staining well for glycogen and succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) but with little myofibrillar ATPase, were evident on either side of the lateral line, in June. Well differentiated relatively large white fibres contained lower concentrations of glycogen than the red fibres, higher ATPase and no SDH, except traces in the larger 1- and 2-year-olds. Intermediate size pink fibres, which were also intermediate between red and white fibres in their staining properties, occurred in a thin diffuse layer along the red-white boundary, thickest at the apex near the vertebral column, and most evident in the younger fish. 相似文献

Excavation of stranded redds revealed differences in spawning behaviour between farmed and wild Atlantic salmon. The redd of a farmed fish contained more egg pockets (nine v . average of two) and fewer eggs per pocket (averages: 459 v . 707). No other pocket measures differed. 相似文献
