Artificial lighting allows humans to be active at night, but has many unintended consequences, including interference with ecological processes, disruption of circadian rhythms and increased exposure to insect vectors of diseases. Although ultraviolet and blue light are usually most attractive to arthropods, degree of attraction varies among orders. With a focus on future indoor lighting applications, we manipulated the spectrum of white lamps to investigate the influence of spectral composition on number of arthropods attracted. We compared numbers of arthropods captured at three customizable light-emitting diode (LED) lamps (3510, 2704 and 2728 K), two commercial LED lamps (2700 K), two commercial compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs; 2700 K) and a control. We configured the three custom LEDs to minimize invertebrate attraction based on published attraction curves for honeybees and moths. Lamps were placed with pan traps at an urban and two rural study sites in Los Angeles, California. For all invertebrate orders combined, our custom LED configurations were less attractive than the commercial LED lamps or CFLs of similar colour temperatures. Thus, adjusting spectral composition of white light to minimize attracting nocturnal arthropods is feasible; not all lights with the same colour temperature are equally attractive to arthropods.  相似文献

Artificial light at night can be harmful to the environment, and interferes with fauna and flora, star visibility, and human health. To estimate the relative impact of a lighting device, its radiant power, angular photometry and detailed spectral power distribution have to be considered. In this paper we focus on the spectral power distribution. While specific spectral characteristics can be considered harmful during the night, they can be considered advantageous during the day. As an example, while blue-rich Metal Halide lamps can be problematic for human health, star visibility and vegetation photosynthesis during the night, they can be highly appropriate during the day for plant growth and light therapy. In this paper we propose three new indices to characterize lamp spectra. These indices have been designed to allow a quick estimation of the potential impact of a lamp spectrum on melatonin suppression, photosynthesis, and star visibility. We used these new indices to compare various lighting technologies objectively. We also considered the transformation of such indices according to the propagation of light into the atmosphere as a function of distance to the observer. Among other results, we found that low pressure sodium, phosphor-converted amber light emitting diodes (LED) and LED 2700 K lamps filtered with the new Ledtech’s Equilib filter showed a lower or equivalent potential impact on melatonin suppression and star visibility in comparison to high pressure sodium lamps. Low pressure sodium, LED 5000 K-filtered and LED 2700 K-filtered lamps had a lower impact on photosynthesis than did high pressure sodium lamps. Finally, we propose these indices as new standards for the lighting industry to be used in characterizing their lighting technologies. We hope that their use will favor the design of new environmentally and health-friendly lighting technologies.  相似文献

Effects of different conditions of environmental lighting on the appearance of the muricidal behaviour in male Wistar rats have been studied. The animals were kept under different conditions of environmental lighting: 1) natural day light alternated with the dark of the night; 2) sodium, continuous light emitted by a sodium steam lamp; 3) neon, continuous light emitted by fluorescent neon tubes. The continuous sodium steam light increased the percentage of animals becoming muricide when compared to animals bred in a natural environment with a normal succession of day-night lighting. On the contrary, this percentage decreased if the rats of the same group are exposed to continuous light emitted by fluorescent neon tubes. As the exposure of rats to an environment under continuous light causes a reduction of the cerebral content of serotonin, the muricidal behaviour provoked in naturally non-muricide rats by this type of lighting could be related to this depletion.  相似文献

Summary The effects of light spectral quality on the growth of in vitro nodal cuttings of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars Norland, Superior, Kennebec, and Denali were examined. The different light spectra were provided by Vita-Lite fluorescent (VF) (a white light control), blue fluorescent (BF), red fluorescent (RF), low-pressure sodium (LPS), and a combination of low-pressure sodium plus cool-white fluorescent lamps (LPS/CWF). For all cultivars, stem lengths after 4 wk were longest under LPS, followed by RF, LPS/CWF, VF, and BF (in descending order). Microscopic studies revealed that cells were shortest when cultured in BF or VF environments, and were longest in RF or LPS lamp environments. The highest number of axillary branches occurred on plantlets grown with LPS or LPS/CWF, whereas the lowest number occurred with BF. No leaf or stem edema (callus or gall-like growths) occurred with LPS or LPS/CWF lighting, and no edema occurred on cv. Norland plantlets, regardless of lighting. Results suggest that shoot morphologic development of in vitro grown potato plants can be controlled by controlling irradiant spectral quality.  相似文献

In growth chambers, low pressure sodium (LPS) plus incandescent (Inc) lamps and fluorescent cool-white (FCW) plus Inc lamps were used to determine their effects on growth of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and on the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+. Cotton plants grown under LPS + Inc light developed chlorosis and grew poorly, whereas plants grown under FCW + Inc lights were green. The chlorophyll concentration and top and root weights of cotton grown under LPS + Inc were lower than those under FCW + Inc. In solution, FCW + Inc lamps reduced about eight times more Fe3+ to Fe2+ than did LPS + Inc lamps. Fe3+ is transported to plant tops as Fe3+ citrate and if we assume that FCW + Inc light reduces Fe3+ to Fe2+ in plant foliage as it did in the solutions, then reduction of Fe3+ by the light environment will make Fe2+ in the tops more available for biochemical reactions.  相似文献

Plants cultivated in growth chambers under such artificial illumination as fluorescent tubes show certain characteristic differences from plants grown in nature or under incandescent lamps. The plants grown under fluorescent light are shorter and more darkly pigmented; they also show different daylength requirements for certain photoperiodic responses. It was assumed that these effects were caused by the relative deficiency of far red irradiation (λ= 700–750 nm) in the emission from the fluorescent lamps. This assumption was tested on such light sensitive phenomena as stem elongation, flowering, the formation of resting organs, chlorophyll synthesis, and production yield in several plant genera. In all cases the plants were grown under long days (16 h). Six common types of growth chamber illumination were tested for their efficacy for long-day induction. The spectral energy distribution of the lamps was measured. The emission from the various lamp types showed only small differences within the region of visible light (λ: 400–750 nm), but much larger diversity in the ratio of visible to infrared radiation (λ: 750–1000 nm). A strong correlation exists between the relative emission of infrared radiation and the photomorphogenetic efficacy of the lamps. Under fluorescent light the long-day effect was weak or missing, but increased with increasing infrared emission. High infrared emission was also favourable for high production yield.  相似文献

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv Fremont) grown in hydroponic culture under 24-hour continuous irradiation at 560 to 580 micromoles per square meter per second from either metalhalide (MH), high pressure sodium (HPS), or low pressure sodium (LPS) lamps reached maturity in 70 days. Grain yields were similar under all three lamps, although LPS-grown plants lodged at maturity. Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and a tyrosine ammonia lyase (TAL) with lesser activity were detected in all extracts of leaf, inflorescence, and stem. Ammonia-lyase activities increased with age of the plant, and plants grown under the LPS lamp displayed PAL and TAL activities lower than wheat cultured under MH and HPS radiation. Greenhouse solar-grown wheat had the highest PAL and TAL activities. Lignin content of LPS-grown wheat was also significantly reduced from that of plants grown under MH or HPS lamps or in the greenhouse, showing a correlation with the reduced PAL and TAL activities. Ratios of far red-absorbing phytochrome to total phytochrome were similar for all three lamps, but the data do not yet warrant a conclusion about specific wavelengths missing from the LPS lamps that might have induced PAL and TAL activities in plants under the other lamps.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the impact of light applied during preharvest culture on the subsequent senescence of cut rose flower and to analyse the possible involvement of abscisic acid (ABA). The longevity of cut rose flowers was longer when rose plants were previously grown under high pressure sodium lamps than under metal halide lamps. A change in light source did not lead to a change in leaf ABA content but significantly affected the petal ABA content. The relationship between ABA level and flower longevity, previously reported for differences of genetic origin, was again observed for culture-induced differences: the higher the ABA level at harvest, the shorter the vase-life observed.  相似文献

Exposure to solar radiation is increasingly being associated with a risk of cutaneous melanoma, and some risk has also been attributed to exposure to fluorescent lights. The risk of cutaneous melanoma associated with exposure to some sources of artificial ultraviolet radiation was examined in a case-control study in a Scottish population with fairly low exposure to natural ultraviolet radiation. The risk was not significantly or consistently raised for exposure to fluorescent lights at home or at work. The use of ultraviolet lamps and sunbeds, however, was associated with a significantly increased risk (relative risk = 2.9; 95% confidence interval 1.3 to 6.4), and the risk was significantly related to duration of use. The risk was particularly raised among people who have first used [corrected] ultraviolet beds or lamps more than [corrected] five years before presentation (relative risk = 9.1; 95% confidence intervals 2.0-40.6), in whom it was significantly related to cumulative hours of exposure. The risks associated with exposure to ultraviolet lamps and sunbeds remained significant after adjustment for other risk factors for melanoma.  相似文献

Vascular smooth muscle cell contraction and endothelium-dependent relaxation was evaluated in aortic rings isolated from weaned, 5-mo-old Sprague-Dawley rats fed a normal (NS; 0.8% NaCl) or high (HS; 8% NaCl) sodium diet. Arterial pressure was 140 +/- 6 (NS) and 145 +/- 6 mmHg (HS). In endothelium-denuded rings, the response to phenylephrine (PE) was not modified by the sodium diet, while that of depolarizing agent KCl and intracellular calcium releasing agent caffeine increased in the HS group. When endothelium was preserved, PE-evoked contraction was reduced in both NS and HS groups, the contraction being yet lower in the HS group. This effect was partially obliterated by addition of N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), independently of the sodium diet. Relaxation to ACh in intact rings and to sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and 8-bromoadenosine 3'5' cyclic guanosine monophosphate (8-BrcGMP) in the absence of endothelium was enhanced in rings isolated from HS rats. In addition, the dose-response curve to 8-BrcGMP was shifted to the right in the presence of iberiotoxin, an inhibitor of large conductance, voltage-dependent, and calcium-sensitive potassium channel (BK(Ca)). However, shift was more marked in rings from HS rats. Present results provide evidence that response of vascular smooth muscle cell to nitric oxide/cGMP-related compounds is increased in HS rings and is associated with a greater activation of the repolarizing BK(Ca) channels. Such changes might counterbalance enhanced contractile response to membrane depolarization and thus participate in maintenance of arterial pressure in the present model of early and long-term HS feeding in rats.  相似文献

Although terrestrial CO2 concentrations, [CO2] are not expected to reach 1000 micromoles mol-1 for many decades, CO2 levels in closed systems such as growth chambers and glasshouses, can easily exceed this concentration. CO2 levels in life support systems in space can exceed 10000 micromoles mol-1 (1%). Here we studied the effect of six CO2 concentrations, from ambient up to 10000 micromoles mol-1, on seed yield, growth and gas exchange of two wheat cultivars (USU-Apogee and Veery-l0). Elevating [CO2] from 350 to 1000 micromoles mol-1 increased seed yield (by 33%), vegetative biomass (by 25%) and number of heads m-2 (by 34%) of wheat plants. Elevation of [CO2] from 1000 to 10000 micromoles mol-1 decreased seed yield (by 37%), harvest index (by 14%), mass per seed (by 9%) and number of seeds per head (by 29%). This very high [CO2] had a negligible, non-significant effect on vegetative biomass, number of heads m-2 and seed mass per head. A sharp decrease in seed yield, harvest index and seeds per head occurred by elevating [CO2] from 1000 to 2600 micromoles mol-1. Further elevation of [CO2] from 2600 to 10000 micromoles mol-1 caused a further but smaller decrease. The effect of CO2 on both wheat cultivars was similar for all growth parameters. Similarly there were no differences in the response to high [CO2] between wheat grown hydroponically in growth chambers under fluorescent lights and those grown in soilless media in a glasshouse under sunlight and high pressure sodium lamps. There was no correlation between high [CO2] and ethylene production by flag leaves or by wheat heads. Therefore, the reduction in seed set in wheat plants is not mediated by ethylene. The photosynthetic rate of whole wheat plants was 8% lower and dark respiration of the wheat heads 25% lower when exposed to 2600 micromoles mol-1 CO2 compared to ambient [CO2]. It is concluded that the reduction in the seed set can be mainly explained by the reduction in the dark respiration in wheat heads, when most of the respiration is functional and is needed for seed development.  相似文献

Wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.) were grown at the same photosynthetic photon flux (PPF), 200 micromoles per square meter per second, but with phytochrome photoequilibrium ([unk]) values of 0.81, 0.55, and 0.33. Plants grown at [unk] values of 0.55 and 0.33 tillered 43 and 56%, less compared with plants grown at [unk] of 0.81. Main culm development (Haun stage) was slightly more advanced at lower values of [unk], and leaf sheaths, but not leaf lamina, were longer at lower [unk]. Dry-mass accumulation was not affected by different levels of [unk]. Three levels of PPF (100, 200, and 400 micromoles per square meter per second) and two lamp types, metal halide and high pressure sodium, were also tested. Higher levels of PPF resulted in more dry mass, more tillering, and a more advanced Haun stage. There was no difference in plant dry mass or development under metal halide versus high pressure sodium lamps, except for total leaf length, which was greater under high pressure sodium lamps (49.5 versus 44.9 centimeters, P < 0.01).  相似文献

The human and murine diurnal rhythms are out of phase. Consequently in conventionally-lit mouse houses the mice's deep sleep is often disrupted, the daily welfare monitoring of the mice is limited by their inactivity, and scientific data obtained from the mice model the sleeping rather than awake human. Sodium light is bichromatic, with both wavelengths being in the human visual field but at the margin of murine vision. We report here that sodium lamps can be used to light mouse houses to a level that is comfortable for humans, but still sufficiently dull to permit nocturnal behaviour in mice. The response of mice to sodium light was initially monitored by recording the locomotory activity of BALB/c mice. The movement of mice in their cages greatly increased at the start of the nocturnal phase. Alterations in the white light cycle caused an acute change in the onset of nocturnal behaviour. In contrast, sodium light did not suppress the onset of nocturnal locomotory behaviour, even though the lighting was sufficiently bright for humans to read without light adaptation. The sodium lighting was then used to observe the nocturnal behaviour of over 150 mice of various strains, for over 1.5 years. Mice were invariably awake and alert during the nocturnal/sodium light phase. All exhibited high locomotory activity, except for nursing mothers. Some tasks, such as cage cleaning and minor surgery, were more easily done under white than sodium lighting. We therefore adjusted the timing of the light cycles to provide white light in the morning and sodium light (nocturnal phase) in the afternoon. This provided for easy operation of the mouse house, while yielding both animal welfare and scientific advantages.  相似文献

The present experiments were designed to evaluate vascular reactivity to angiotensin II in rats with experimental cirrhosis of the liver (induced with CCl4 and phenobarbital) before ascites appearance. The systemic pressor response to angiotensin II in conscious animals and the contractile effect of angiotensin II in isolated femoral arteries were studied. In addition, the effect of high sodium intake on these parameters was also analyzed. Both renin and aldosterone plasma concentrations were similar in control and cirrhotic rats on the normal or on the high sodium diet. Basal mean arterial pressure was higher in control rats than in cirrhotic rats on the normal sodium (116 +/- 4 vs. 101 +/- 4 mmHg (1 mmHg = 133.3 Pa), p less than 0.05) or on the high sodium diet (118 +/- 7 vs. 98 +/- 6 mmHg). No differences in plasma renin activity or plasma aldosterone were found between control and cirrhotic rats. Upon injection of angiotensin II, control rats show a dose-dependent increase in mean arterial pressure which is higher in high sodium than in normal sodium rats. Cirrhotic rats showed a lower hypertensive response to angiotensin II than their corresponding control rats. In addition, no difference between pressor responses to angiotensin II was observed when normal sodium and high sodium cirrhotic rats were compared. On application of angiotensin II, femoral arteries of control and cirrhotic rats exhibited a dose-dependent contraction. A growth analysis was made of ultraviolet-B (UV-B)-sensitive (Poinsett) and insensitive (Ashley) cultivars of Cucuumis satives L. grown in growth chambers at 600 μmol m−2 s−1 of photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) provided by red- and far-red-deficient metal halide (MH) or blue- and UV-A-deficient high pressure sodium/deluxe f HPS/DX) lamps. Plants were irradiated 6 h daiiy with 0.2 f-UV-B) or 18.2 C+UV-B) kJ m−2 day−1 of biologically effective UV-B for 8 or 15 days from time of seeding. In general, plants given supplemental UV-B for 15 days showed lower leaf area ratio (LARs, and higher specific leaf mass (SLM) mean relative growth rate (MRGR) and net assimilation rate (NAR) than that of control plants, but they showed no difference in leaf mass ratio (LMR), Plants grown under HPS/DX lamps vs MH lamps showed higher SLM and NAR. lower LAR and LMR. hut no difference in MRGR. LMR was the only growth parameter affected by cultivar: at 15 days, it was slightly greater in Poinsett than in Ashley. There were no interactive effects of UV-B. PPF source or cultivar on any of the growth parameters determined, indicating that the choice of either HPS/DX or MH lamps should not affect growth response to UV-B radiation. This was true even though leaves of UV-B-irradiated plants grown under HPS/DX lamps have been shown to have greater chlorosis than those grown under MH lamps.  相似文献

Summary Bean and marigold plants were grown to maturity under several kinds of fluorescent lamps to evaluate the effects of spectral differences on development and reproduction. Six kinds of lamps were tested including five lamps that were used in closely related experiments on tomato seedling growth (Thomas and Dunn, 1967). Evaluation was by fresh- and dry-weight yields of immature and mature pods, and of vegetative tops of plants for bean; and by flowering and fresh-and dry-weight yields for marigold.Bean plants grown under two experimental lamps, Com I and IR III produced significantly higher fresh- and dry-weight yields of both mature and total pods than under Warm-white lamps. This effect could be attributed largely to the considerable energy emitted by the experimental lamps in the red and far-red, as compared to a larger emission in the green and blue for the Warm-white lamps. The differences in the yields for immature pods and vegetative portions of the mature tops were not significant.In a comparison of the effects of three experimental lamps with those of three commercial lamps on growth response of bean plants, the yields were in general higher for the experimental lamps, except for immature pods. The yields of vegetative tops were significantly greater for the 78/22 lamp over the yields for all other lamps. The larger proportion of red and far-red light emitted by the experimental lamps is again the probable cause of the higher yields with these lamps.Two sets of experiments on growth and flowering of marigold under various experimental and commercial lamps were largely inconclusive although there was some indication of beneficial effects by the experimental lamps.In general, the results with bean agree with those for tomato (Thomas and Dunn, 1967), in that best growth was obtained with a lamp high in red light emission, a moderate amount in the far-red, and very little in the blue part of the spectrum.This research was submitted by the senior author in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the M.S. degree in Botany at the University of New Hampshire.Published with the approval of the director of the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station as Scientific Contribution No. 398. UV-B-sensitive (Poinsett) and -insensitive (Ashley) cultivars of cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L.) were grown in growth chambers at 600 μmol m−2s−1 of photosynthetically active radiation provided by metal halide (MH) or high pressure sodium/deluxe (HPS/DX) lamps. Plants were irradiated 15 days from seeding for 6 h per day under 18. 2 kJ m−2 day−1 of biologically effective UV-B (UV-BBE) radiation. One of the most pronounced effects of UV-B was a 27 to 78% increase in phenylalanine ammonialyase (PAL) activity. UV-B also increased total polyamines. Catalase and superoxide dismutase varied greatly in their response to UV-B. There were no interactive effects on PAL or catalase activity, or total polyamines. There was a UV × PAR source interaction for superoxide dismutase activity. UV-B increased chlorosis and decreased height, dry weight and leaf area. Stem elongation, biomass production, leaf enlargement and chlorosis were greater under HPS/DX lamps than under MH lamps. Chlorosis was greater in Poinsett than in Ashley and in lower leaves than in upper ones. Aside from chlorosis, there were no interactive effects of UV-B, PAR source or cultivar on any of the growth parameters measured, suggesting that the growth response of cucumber seedlings to UV-B is unaffected by PAR source or cultivar. Similarly, except for SOD activity, the biochemical response to UV-B was also not influenced by PAR source or cultivar.  相似文献

Plasma corticosterone was determined by radioimmunoassay in 6-7-week-old male broiler type chicks, reared under several carefully controlled lighting regimes. When subjects were grouped by photoperiod of rearing, chicks reared in darkness had significantly lower hormone levels than diurnal controls, or than subjects reared in continuous light. Around-the-clock sampling revealed a diurnal corticosterone rhythm, with high daytime levels and lower night-time levels. This rhythm appeared to be retained in constant light, although phase shifted or free running. Neither analysis by light intensity level nor by lights on/lights off status at the time of blood sampling revealed differences in plasma corticosterone between the experimental groups which could be attributed to these factors.  相似文献

The behavioral response of Biomphalaria straminea to light was evaluated in terms of location of the snail in a Y-shaped aquarium in a situation of selection and of the rate (cm/hour) and direction of locomotion under homogeneous (vertical) or differential (horizontal) lighting upon only one arm of the aquarium. The light source consisted of daylight fluorescent lamps with a spectrum close to that of natural light, with illumination varying from 2.8 to 350 lux. Analysis of the data showed that all animals, whether in groups or isolated, were attracted to light, although the time needed to approach the light source was 50% shorter for the former than for the latter. The rate of locomotion of B. straminea was 35% higher than that observed in B. glabrata and 51% higher than that observed in B. tenagophila studied under similar conditions. The results are discussed in terms of social factors and geographical distribution of the three species.  相似文献

In Sprague-Dawley rats kept under 14L:10D (lights on 05:00-19:00 h), parturition occurred during the light phase on Day 23, and the pre-partum decrease in progesterone concentrations was observed between 07:00 and 15:00 h during the light period on Day 22. When the rats were transferred to reversed light-dark regimen (lights on 17:00-07:00 h) on Day 7, the progesterone decrease and parturition still occurred during the light period on Day 21 and 22-23, respectively. However, when rats were kept in constant darkness from Day 7, parturition occurred independently of the time of day between Day 22 and 24. A gradual decline of progesterone concentrations was randomly observed in individual rats. In Wistar rats kept under the usual light-dark regimen, parturitions were biphasic, occurring during the light periods on Day 22 and 23. The progesterone decrease occurred at the usual time even when the lighting regimen was changed only on the day of the expected progesterone decrease. However, treatment with pentobarbitone sodium at 15:00, 19:00 or 21:00 h, but not at 12:00 or 23:00 h, on Day 21 resulted in a delay of progesterone decrease and of parturition. Complete lesion of the suprachiasmatic nucleus on Day 13 or 14 led to advancement and random distribution of the time of birth. These results suggest that the time of parturition and of pre-partum progesterone decrease may be closely associated with an endogenous circadian system, and a luteolytic factor involving the nervous system may be present during a limited period before parturition.  相似文献
