Summary Total body weight and skeletal weight, from clean and dry bones, were measured in 61 common dolphins, Delphinus delphis of known ages (age determinations using both growth lines in the jaw, and growth layer groups in dentine). The relative skeletal weight in adults, expressed as a percentage of total body weight, is notably less than that of any cetaceans previously described. Appearently, this ratio is also smaller than that for any other vertebrate. In particular, skeletons of delphinids tend to be proportionally lighter than those of bony fishes. Classical hypotheses concerning the effect of buoyancy on the mass of supportive tissues can only partially explain such a relative reduction of skeletal weight.  相似文献

The neotropical cichlid fish Cichlasoma citrinellum is polymorphic in the structure of its pharyngeal jaw apparatus and external morphology. The pharyngeal jaws are either gracile and bear slender, pointed teeth (papilliform) or robust with strong, rounded teeth (molariform). Molariform morphs have a ‘benthic’, and papilliform morphs a ‘limnetic’ body form. Furthermore, this species is also polychromatic, with yellow and black morphs. The molariform morphology of the pharyngeal jaw apparatus adapts the fish for cracking and feeding on snails. Based on analysis of stomach contents, 94% of the molariform morph ate snails whereas only 19%, of the papilliform morph did so. This result suggests that the morphs occupy different ecological niches. The morphology of the pharyngeal jaw apparatus does not correlate significantly with sex, but it does with body colouration (P<0.005). Cichlasoma citrinellum mate assortatively with their own colour; therefore a mating preference for colour may lead to genetic isolation of trophic morphs. The frequency of the molariform morph differs strikingly among populations of five Nicaraguan lakes and its abundance is correlated with the abundance of snails, the fishes' principal prey item. Among populations the frequency of molariform morphs decreases in the dry season. Morphology possibly changes reversibly within particular individuals between seasons. These results suggest that phenotypic plasticity and polymorphisms may be an adaptive characteristic of cichlid fishes. Patterns of intraspecific morphological variation match patterns of interspecific morphological diversification which suggests that universal developmental mechanisms canalize the possible expressions of morphology. The ability to respond morphologically to environmental shifts, in conjunction with genetically determined trophic polymorphisms and sexual selection via mate choice, could be the basis for speciation through intermediate stages of polymorphism of the impressive adaptive radiation of cichlid fishes.  相似文献

Trematomus newnesi is a common inshore species with a circum-Antarctic distribution. It provides the only known example of phenotypic plasticity in Antarctic notothenioid fish, existing as populations of typical, large mouth and intermediate morphs that can be difficult to identify. Using specimens from both Potter Cove, King George/25 de Mayo Island, and from McMurdo Sound, we found that the morphometric measurements gape width/head length (HL), upper jaw length/HL and, to a lesser extent, orbit diameter/HL reliably separated the morphs. For use in a key, we converted the ratios into the qualitative characters head shape, head width and upper jaw length relative to middle of the eye. To increase the reliability of the key, we also assessed intra-morph variability in these characters. The key is supplemented with colour photographs illustrating the distinctive features for separation of the morphs. We discovered that, in the case of the specimens from Potter Cove, each morph had a distinct pattern of colouration: typical—trunk blotched, with yellow or orange-brown predominating especially on pectoral and caudal fins; large mouth—trunk blotched, with green predominating especially in pectoral and opercular regions; and intermediate—trunk less blotched, with homogeneous dark brown-grey on trunk, pectoral and caudal fins. Abstract

The grey fantail (Rhipidura fuliginosa) in New Zealand displays a striking plumage polymorphism. Some individuals are coloured almost entirely black (the “black morph"), while other individuals sport a contrasting brown and white plumage (the “pied morph"). The adaptive significance of plumage polymorphism in this species is unknown. We mapped the relative distribution and frequency of each morph across the entire South Island range of the fantail, and correlated the frequency of the morphs with a variety of ecological variables. The black morph comprised <5% of individuals across the South Island and, contrary to previous observations, was least frequent at the southern extremes of its range. From historical records, the frequency of the black morph also appears to have declined, although we cannot rule out a bias in reporting rates of the black morph in the literature. The relative frequency of the two morphs was not related to vegetation type, annual rainfall, altitude, or mean annual temperature. Although we could not identify an environmental variable that might explain the distribution of the two morphs over the South Island, changes in the relative abundance of each morph suggest a dynamic process that warrants further long‐term study.  相似文献

1 The walnut aphid Chromaphis juglandicola is a yellow aphid. In 2003, however, a white colour morph was discovered in the Sacramento Valley of California. The colour dimorphism occurs between clone lines and, when white morphs are present, they occur in mixed colour morph colonies on the underside of walnut leaves. 2 Laboratory experiments were undertaken to evaluate the thermal requirements for development, adult longevity and progeny production of the two colour morphs. Host instar preference of Trioxys pallidus, a parasitoid responsible for the successful biological control of the walnut aphid in California, was examined separately for each colour morph, and host colour preference was investigated for the preferred instar. 3 No differences in thermal requirements for development, adult size or mean longevity were detected between yellow and white colour morphs. A small difference in early reproduction was detected: white colour morphs produced more progeny on each of the two first days of adult reproduction than yellow colour morphs. 4 Trioxys pallidus showed a slight preference for the fourth instar of the yellow morph over the second‐ and third‐, but equal preference for second, third and fourth instars of the white morph. When offered equal numbers of fourth instars of the two colour morphs, T. pallidus did not show any colour preference. 5 The differences in early aphid reproduction and host instar preference by T. pallidus were combined in a stage‐structured matrix model. Model analysis showed a greater potential for population growth of the white morph over the yellow morph, with early reproduction having a greater influence than host instar preference.  相似文献

Concentrations of total lipid, triglyceride, soluble carbohydrate, total nitrogen and water were measured in the long-winged (LW) and short-winged (SW) morphs of the cricket, Gryllus firmus. In addition, the weights and composition of wings and oviposited eggs were compared between morphs. This was done to obtain information on the energetic cost of flight capability in the LW morph. Whole-cricket content (% dry mass) of triglyceride was significantly higher in LW vs SW individuals of both sexes. Since triglyceride is a likely flight fuel in G. firmus, the biosynthesis of elevated levels of this high energy substance in the LW morph may represent an important energetic cost of flight capability. The existence of such a cost is consistent with the elevated respiratory metabolism previously observed in LW vs SW G. firmus. A highly significant negative correlation was observed between triglycerides and non-triglycerides in LW but not SW crickets. This suggests that lipid biosynthesis may be operating under some constraint in the LW morph. Increased triglyceride biosynthesis may require a concomitant decreased biosynthesis of non-triglycerides. In contrast to the elevated triglyceride level in the LW morph, carbohydrate concentration was higher in the SW morph during early adulthood. Carbohydrate content also decreased with age in the SW but not in the LW adults. No differences were observed between morphs in (1) the total nitrogen or water contents of whole crickets, (2) the nitrogen content of wings or (3) the wet weight, dry weight, lipid content, or total nitrogen content of oviposited eggs.  相似文献

We examined components of male and female reproductive success in protogynous and protandrous sexual morphs of the heterodichogamous and largely monoecious chenopod shrub Grayia brandegei. Percentage femaleness of flowering stalks ranged from 0 to 37.6% female ( = 15.5%) for protandrous plants and from 14 to 100% female ( = 55.8%) for protogynous plants. Functional gender estimates based on ovule production at two locations ranged from 23.0 to 31.8% female for the protandrous morph, and from 65.3 to 77.0% female for the protogynous morph. Realized gender estimates based on total seed production ranged in value from 3.6 to 16.8% female for the protandrous morph and from 76.5 to 96.4% for the protogynous morph, depending on location and year. Differences in reproductive success of the two morphs were largely due to a reduction in the female function of protandrous plants. Protogynous plants produced more female flowers per stalk and had a higher percentage of seed-filled fruits than did protandrous plants. Differences between sexual morphs were more pronounced in dry areas or years in which overall seed production was minimal. Differential seed production between morphs likely reflects temporal patchiness in environmental conditions, particularly in water availability. The significance of these findings in support of heterodichogamy as an evolutionary pathway to dioecy is discussed.  相似文献

Six- and seven-band morphs have been identified in a cichlid, Cyphotilapia frontosa, that is endemic to Lake Tanganyika. These color morphs have allopatric distributions; the six-band morph is widespread in the northern half of the lake while the seven-band morph is restricted to Kigoma on the east coast of the lake. Because no specimens of the seven-band morph have been available for taxonomic study except for the holotype of C. frontosa, the taxonomic status of these morphs has not been discussed. In a recent survey at the lake, 21 specimens of the seven-band morph were collected. A comparison of these with existing collection specimens of the six-band morph showed significant differences in morphometric and meristic characters; however, because all characters largely overlapped between these morphs, they are regarded as conspecific.  相似文献

Sexual selection is one of the main processes involved in the emergence and maintenance of heritable color polymorphisms in a variety of taxa. Here, we test whether the intensity of sexual selection, estimated from population sex ratio, predicts morph diversity in Podarcis muralis, a color polymorphic lizard with discrete white, yellow, orange, white‐orange, and yellow‐orange male and female phenotypes (i.e., morphs). In a sample of 116 Pyrenean populations and 5421 lizards, sex ratios (m/f) vary from 0.29 to 2.5, with the number of morphs for each sex ranging from 2 to 5. Male‐biased sex ratios are associated with increased morph diversity as measured with Shannon's diversity index. The main factor accounting for this relationship is male morph richness (i.e., the number of morphs). In contrast, female morph diversity is not related to sex ratio. These results suggest a relationship between the intensity of male intrasexual competition and male morph diversity. While other selective forces may interact with sexual selection in maintaining the color polymorphisms in P. muralis, this evidence suggests a complex evolutionary scenario possibly involving frequency‐dependent selection of alternative reproductive tactics and/or complex balancing selection.  相似文献

The cricket, Gryllus rubens (Orthoptera, Gryllidae), exists in natural populations as either a fully-winged (LW), flight-capable morph or as a short-winged (SW) morph that cannot fly. The SW morph is substantially more fecund than the LW morph. In this study we report on the physiological basis of this trade-off between flight capability and fecundity. Results from gravimetric feeding trials indicate that LW and SW morphs are equivalent in their consumption and digestion of food. However, during the adult stage, the LW morph is less efficient in converting assimilated nutrients into biomass. This may be a consequence of the respired loss of assimilated nutrients due to the maintenance of functional flight muscles in the LW morph. In both morphs the gross biomass devoted to flight muscles does not change significantly during the first 14 days of adult growth while there is a significant biomass gain in ovarian tissue mass during the same period. SW morphs have vestigial flight muscles and gain substantially more ovarian mass relative to the LW morphs. These data are consistent with a trade-off between flight muscle maintenance in the LW morph and ovarian growth in the SW form. This is the first evidence for a life-history trade-off that has a physiological basis which is limited to the allocation of acquired and assimilated nutrients within the organism.  相似文献

Heterodichogamy is defined as the presence of two flower morphs that exhibit male and female functions at different times among individuals within a population, and is regarded as an adaptation to promote outbreeding through enhanced intermorph pollination. In highly fragmented populations in which the morph frequency is biased, heterodichogamy may hamper population growth by reducing seed sets of the more numerous morph, and enhancing seed sets of the less numerous morph. In such situations, we hypothesize that individual plants experience greater seed sets if the opposite sexual morphs are nearby, and that individuals of a less numerous sexual morph have greater seed sets. After confirming heterodichogamy by observing flowering behavior and phenology, we tested these two hypotheses in a highly fragmented population of Machilus thunbergii, a putative heterodichogamous evergreen laurel tree. Our observations confirmed that M. thunbergii is heterodichogamous, consisting of two types of protogynous and bisexual flowers: a morning female (MF)–afternoon male morph and a morning male (MM)–afternoon female morph at the individual level. Sexual expression of the two morphs was highly synchronized and reciprocal. Investigation of seed‐set rates revealed greater rates of both morphs if the opposite morph was nearby. Abstract 1. Polymorphism has been described for a number of herbivorous insects, but little is known about whether differences in body colour cause fitness differences. In Chorthippus parallelus, three main colour morphs occur, namely brown, green, and dorsally striped. 2. The present study examined colour morph abundances and morph‐related differences in body size, oviposition rate, and offspring numbers in females of C. parallelus collected in 15 montane grasslands. The study also examined the effect of plant species richness, composition, community productivity, and solar radiation on colour morph frequency and fitness. 3. The relative frequencies of the three colour morphs was 31.7% (brown), 33.1% (green), and 35.2% (dorsally striped), but the morphs were not evenly distributed across the 15 sites. 4. There was no effect of the habitat variables on the distribution of the green and the striped morph in the study sites, however 80% of the variation in the abundances of the brown morph was explained by plant species richness and composition. 5. Grasshopper size was equal among the morphs. Brown females laid significantly more egg pods than the green and dorsally striped morphs. There were no significant differences in offspring numbers among the colour morphs. 6. Body colour in C. parallelus seems to be a fitness‐relevant trait, raising the question of the evolutionary maintenance of polymorphism.  相似文献

Distyly is a floral polymorphism, characterized by a reciprocal positioning between stigmas and anthers in different flowers, where two floral morphs, long-styled (pin) and short-styled (thrum) occur within the population. Distyly is suggested as one of the routes leading to the evolution of separate sexes in plants. In this evolutionary pathway, pollinators may disrupt the complementarity of pollen transfer between morphs. Consequently, the floral morphs gradually specialize as either male or female. A key process required for gender specialization in distylous plants is a deviation of the realized functional gender (i.e. the proportion of genes transmitted to the next generation via pollen donation and seed production) from the potential functional gender (i.e. the expected contribution of male and female function to reproductive success from the number of ovules or pollen grains produced by each morph). I selected the distylous herb Arcytophyllum lavarum (Rubiaceae) to determine if asymmetry in pollen flow promotes differences in seed production, pollen donation and a discrepancy between the potential and the realized functional genders in pin and thrum floral morphs. Pollen flow in A. lavarum is asymmetric and the pin morph is more efficient at performing cross-pollination than the thrum morph. Conversely, the thrum morph produced two times more seeds than the pin morph. Male and female contributions to the potential functional gender were equivalent in both morphs. However, the pin morph transmitted more genes through pollen donation and the thrum morph more through seed production than expected from their potential functional genders. These results support the hypothesis that if pollinators consistently promote asymmetric pollen flow between morphs over generations, it is possible that gender specialization may evolve to the extreme of dioecism from an original distylous condition.  相似文献

Telmatochromis temporalis is a cichlid fish endemic to Lake Tanganyika. Two morphs of this species, normal and dwarf, form a good model for the study of ecological speciation through divergent natural selection on body size. This study reports a third morph of this species, slender morph, which was collected from deep waters off Kasenga, Zambia, whereas the normal morph inhabits shallow waters of the same locality. This study examined morphological characters and mitochondrial DNA sequences in 18 populations of the three T. temporalis morphs and two closely related species. The slender morph was morphologically similar to the normal and dwarf morphs of the same species, but clearly differed from closely related species. Genetic analyses showed that the slender morph was closest to but significantly different from the parapatric normal morph, suggesting reproductive isolation between them. Due to the lack of colour differences between morphs and of obvious geographical barriers between habitats, reproductive isolation between these morphs may be attributed to ecological factors, rather than sexual or geographical segregation. Further studies examining the evolution of the slender morph may deepen our knowledge of initial stages of speciation, like in the dwarf morph.

We investigated the role of morph‐based differences in the expression of inbreeding depression in loss of the mid‐styled morph from populations of tristylous Oxalis alpina. The extent of self‐compatibility (SC) of reproductive morphs, the degree of self‐fertilization, and the magnitude of inbreeding depression were investigated in three populations of O. alpina differing in their tristylous incompatibility relationships. All three populations exhibited significant inbreeding depression. In two populations with highly modified tristylous incompatibility, manifested as increased reciprocal compatibility between short‐ and long‐styled morphs, substantial SC and self‐fertilization of mid‐styled morphs were detected, and expected to result in expression of inbreeding depression in the progeny of mid‐styled morphs in the natural populations. In contrast, significant self‐fertility of the mid‐styled morph was absent from the population with typical tristylous incompatibility, and no self‐fertilization could be detected. Although self‐fertilization and expression of inbreeding depression should result in selection against the mid‐styled morph in the later stages of the transition from tristyly to distyly, in O. alpina selection against the mid‐styled morph in the early phases of the evolution of distyly is likely due to genic selection against mid‐alleles associated with modified tristylous incompatibility, rather than expression of inbreeding depression.  相似文献

The pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is found in red and green color morphs. Previous work has suggested that the aphidiine parasitoid Aphidius ervi Haliday preferentially attacks green pea aphids in the field. It is not clear whether these results reflect a real preference, or some unknown clonal difference, such as in immunity, between the aphids used in the previous studies. We used three susceptibility-matched pairs of red and green morph pea aphid clones to test for preferences. In a no-choice situation, the parasitoids attacked equal proportions of each color morph. When provided with a choice, A. ervi was significantly more likely to oviposit into colonies formed from green morphs when the neighboring colony was formed from red morph aphids. In contrast, red morphs were less likely to be attacked when their neighboring colony was of the green morph. By preferentially attacking green colonies, A. ervi may reduce the likelihood of intraguild predation, as it is suggested that visually foraging predators preferentially attack red aphid colonies. Furthermore, if this host choice behavior is replicated in the field, we speculate that color morphs of the pea aphid may interact indirectly through their shared natural enemies, leading to intraspecific apparent competition.  相似文献

Males of the lizard Podarcis melisellensis occur in three distinct colours that differ in bite performance, with orange males biting harder than white or yellow ones. Differences in bite force among colour morphs are best explained by differences in head height, suggesting underlying variation in cranial shape and/or the size of the jaw adductors. To explore this issue further, we examined variation in cranial shape, using geometric morphometric techniques. Additionally, we quantified differences in jaw adductor muscle mass. No significant differences in size corrected head shape were found, although some shape trends could be detected between the colour morphs. Orange males have relatively larger jaw adductors than yellow males. Not only the mass of the external jaw adductors, but also that of the internal jaw adductors was greater for the orange morph. Data for other cranial muscles not related to biting suggest that this is not the consequence of an overall increase in robustness in orange individuals. These results suggest that differences in bite performance among morphs are caused specifically by an increase in the mass of the jaw adductor, which may be induced by differences in circulating hormone levels.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 96 , 13–22.  相似文献

The geographic variation of 33 morphological characters of two morphs of the gall-forming aphid Pemphigus populitransversus is studied in 214 locality samples. Among-locality variation ranges from 1 to 69% in the elongate morph and from 0 to 44% in the globular morph. The design of the study permits separation of interlocality correlations from intralocality correlations. The former are partly a function of the latter, confirming early observations on another Pemphigus species and on ticks. Factor analyses of both correlation matrices for both morphs yield four factors. Within localities these factors agree for the two morphs; among localities only one factor corresponds. Multiple discriminant analyses among localities of the two data sets do not correspond. There is little correlation between characters of stem mother and alate morphotypes within localities but such correlations are strong among localities. Maps are furnished for characters representing the independent dimensions of variation for each morph. Patterns of variation are shown to be significant by spatial autocorrelation analysis for both morphs but are much more marked in the elongate morph. Significant positive autocorrelation occurs up to 1000 km in the elongate morph – mostly only up to 200 km in the globular morph. There are two to three geographic variation patterns in the elongate morph, whereas in the globular morph the classes of patterns are less well defined and involve few characters. The environmental factors to which the globular and elongate morphs are adapting would appear to have different autocorrelation patterns. In each morph the patterns are clearly different and cannot be explained by a single microevolutionary process. The findings are compared with an earlier study in the related and largely sympatric P. populicaulis.  相似文献
