Mark-recapture experiments showed that D. melanogaster has high dispersal capabilities. Consistent with a highly migratory species, only very low levels of differentiation were described for D. melanogaster populations from the same continent. We reinvestigated the population structure in D. melanogaster using 49 polymorphic markers in 23 natural populations. While European and American D. melanogaster populations showed very low differentiation, Asian D. melanogaster populations were highly structured. Despite the high differentiation of Asian flies, we confirm that all non-African populations are derived from a single colonization event. We propose that the availability of D. melanogaster populations with high and low population structure provides a novel tool for the identification of ecologically important adaptations by hitchhiking mapping.  相似文献

Summary Alginate and wheat gluten (Pesta) matrices were compared for the encapsulation of the white rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium. Pesta granules were not successful for formulating P. chrysosporium although control granules made with Alternaria alternata yielded viable fungal colonies; the gluten in wheat flour apparently inhibits growth of the white rot fungus. P. chrysosporium formulated in alginate with corncob grits or sawdust, and stored at room temperature, yielded over 50% viability of encapsulated mycelia after six months. Alginate encapsulation offers a promising technology for the delivery of white rot fungi to toxic waste sites.  相似文献

Abstract Long-term forecasts of pest pressure are central to the effective management of many agricultural insect pests. In the eastern cropping regions of Australia, serious infestations of Helicoverpa punctigera (Wallengren) and H. armigera (Hübner)(Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) are experienced annually. Regression analyses of a long series of light-trap catches of adult moths were used to describe the seasonal dynamics of both species. The size of the spring generation in eastern cropping zones could be related to rainfall in putative source areas in inland Australia. Subsequent generations could be related to the abundance of various crops in agricultural areas, rainfall and the magnitude of the spring population peak. As rainfall figured prominently as a predictor variable, and can itself be predicted using the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), trap catches were also related to this variable. The geographic distribution of each species was modelled in relation to climate and CLIMEX was used to predict temporal variation in abundance at given putative source sites in inland Australia using historical meteorological data. These predictions were then correlated with subsequent pest abundance data in a major cropping region. The regression-based and bioclimatic-based approaches to predicting pest abundance are compared and their utility in predicting and interpreting pest dynamics are discussed.  相似文献

Two ecotypes of the rough periwinkle Littorina saxatilis occur at different shore levels, showing assortative mating for size and partial reproductive isolation when they meet at the mid-shore. This system represents a putative case of incomplete speciation in sympatry. Two processes contribute to the assortative mating: morph-specific microhabitat aggregation and mate choice. The estimation of mate choice coefficients in nature and a simulation of the aggregation effects on sexual isolation were used to disentangle these processes as well as to test alternative mechanisms of mate choice. Mate choice significantly increased the frequency of within-morph pairs and significantly decreased the frequency of between-morph pairs, whereas those pairs including at least one hybrid morph mated randomly. These results allow us to reject a discriminant mate choice and support a model of evolution of sexual isolation as a side-effect of size-assortative mating in a context of divergent natural selection for size in the population. This mechanism is more compatible with a model of incomplete by-product ecological speciation, as suggested by previous evidence.  相似文献

Summary The production/respiration (P/R) ratios of homoeotherm populations are about one order of magnitude lower than those of poikilotherm populations. This has suggested to ecologists that homoeotherms are much less efficient converters of food energy into growth and reproduction than poikilotherms, the reason being the high cost of thermal homoeostasis. That this conclusion is wrong can be demonstrated by plotting three measures of production: individual growth rate; maximum rate of population increase; and natural rate of population increase, against rate of basal netabolism. It follows that to call the P/R ratio of communities a measure of production efficiency leads to confusion. If the P/R ratios of homoeotherm poulations are lower than those of poikilotherm populations it is not because their individual members are less efficient but because the low rate of natural increase happens to have been the most stable evolutionary solution for the organization of life cycle schedules in these animals.  相似文献

Previous studies have indicated that the expression of CCN3, a member of the CCN family of proteins, was tightly regulated during central nervous development and was associated with acquisition of cognitive functions in rats (Perbal, Mol Pathol 54(2):57–79, 2001; Su et al. Sheng Li Xue Bao 52(4):290–294, 2000) therefore suggesting that CCN3 might be involved in higher levels of physiological communication in the brain. In spite of the considerable amount of progress made into the understanding of neuronal organization and communication, reducing the knowledge gap between brain cellular biology and behavioral studies remains a huge challenge. Mind-to-mind communication has been the subject of numerous science fiction writings, intense research and emotional debates for many years. Scientists have tried for a long time to achieve transmission of messages between living subjects via non intrusive protocols. Thanks to the great progress made in imagery and neurosciences, another dimension of neuronal function in communication has now been documented. Two recent experimental demonstrations of direct brain to brain communication without physical contact (Grau et al. (2014) Conscious brain-to-brain communication in humans using non-invasive technologies. PLoS One. Aug 19;9(8)- - Rao et al. (2014) A direct brain-to-brain interface in humans. PLoS One. Nov 5;9(11)) pave the road to more sophisticated applications that could profoundly affect communications of humans with other humans, animals and machines. Although the wide use of such applications might seem a long way off, they raise quite a number of ethical, legal and societal issues.  相似文献

Evidence suggesting that small molecular-weight precursors as well as polymers such as proteins and RNA, are not homogeneously distributed in the "soluble" phase of the cell, and that there may be, on one hand, hitherto unidentified barriers to normal diffusion within the cell and, on the other, channels through which certain molecular species may move in the cell sap much faster than their diffusion coefficients will permit, is discussed. New Rural Reconstruction is an ongoing alternative development movement in China, with ties to transnational movements for “social economy,” “fair trade,” and “food sovereignty.” It consists of a diverse network of organizations and projects loosely united by the goals of reversing the rural-to-urban flow of resources and (re)constructing sustainable, self-sufficient communities based on cooperation among peasant households, supported by agroecological skill-sharing and alternative marketing. This article examines four peasant organizations in this movement, focusing on their efforts to negotiate the contradictions between their ideals and their relation to capitalism. I argue that, under present conditions, “success” at reversing the flow of resources through commercial means tends to require further integration into capitalist processes, both increasing vulnerability to global economic forces and undermining “alternative” ideals such as equality, sustainability, and participatory democracy. I thus engage critically with the interdisciplinary literature on “social economy” and cooperatives, considering how cooperative experiments might move beyond the limits of alternativism to play a role in the transformation of their socioeconomic context.  相似文献

Background

The liver stages of malaria parasites are inhibited by cytokines such as interferon-γ or Interleukin (IL)-6. Binding of these cytokines to their receptors at the surface of the infected hepatocytes leads to the production of nitric oxide (NO) and radical oxygen intermediates (ROI), which kill hepatic parasites. However, conflicting results were obtained with TNF-α possibly because of differences in the models used. We have reassessed the role of TNF-α in the different cellular systems used to study the Plasmodium pre-erythrocytic stages.

Methods and Findings

Human or mouse TNF-α were tested against human and rodent malaria parasites grown in vitro in human or rodent primary hepatocytes, or in hepatoma cell lines. Our data demonstrated that TNF-α treatment prevents the development of malaria pre-erythrocytic stages. This inhibitory effect however varies with the infecting parasite species and with the nature and origin of the cytokine and hepatocytes. Inhibition was only observed for all parasite species tested when hepatocytes were pre-incubated 24 or 48 hrs before infection and activity was directed only against early hepatic parasite. We further showed that TNF-α inhibition was mediated by a soluble factor present in the supernatant of TNF-α stimulated hepatocytes but it was not related to NO or ROI. Treatment TNF-α prevents the development of human and rodent malaria pre-erythrocytic stages through the activity of a mediator that remains to be identified.

Conclusions

Treatment TNF-α prevents the development of human and rodent malaria pre-erythrocytic stages through the activity of a mediator that remains to be identified. However, the nature of the cytokine-host cell-parasite combination must be carefully considered for extrapolation to the human infection.  相似文献

 High dimensional Leslie matrix models have long been viewed as discretizations of McKendrick PDE models. However, these two fundamental classes of models can be linked in a completely different way. For populations with periodic birth pulses, Leslie models of any dimension can be viewed as “stroboscopic snapshots” (in time) of an associated impulsive McKendrick model; that is, the solution of the discrete model matches the solution of the corresponding continuous model at every discrete time step. In application, McKendrick models of populations with birth pulses can be used to identify the state of the population between the discrete census times of the associated Leslie model. Furthermore, McKendrick models describing populations with near-synchronous birth pulses can be viewed as realistic perturbations of the associated Leslie model. The principle of competitive exclusion is investigated within the framework of the solvable model proposed earlier for two-species systems. The results elucidate the recent controversy over the interpretation of experimental data onDrosophila equilibrium. It is shown that the necessary and sufficient conditions for stable coexistence of competing species is that the product of intraspecific rate constants be greater than the product of interspecific rate constants. Inequalities between rate constants for the occurrence of stable equilibriumbelow andabove the line joining single species equilibria are derived. The availability of larger domain of coexistence suggests that the model presented here has the potential to accommodate a wider class of phenomena than the Gause—Volterra model according to which coexistence is possible only above the line of single species equilibrium.  相似文献

The tadpole shrimp Triops cancriformis (Branchiopoda, Eucrustacea) is often referred to as a “living fossil.” This term implies that the morphology of a species has barely changed for hundreds of millions of years; in the case of T. cancriformis, for about 200 million years. In 1938, Trusheim documented fossil notostracans from the Upper Triassic of southern Germany (237–200 million years) and named them T. cancriformis minor due to their small size compared to modern forms of T. cancriformis. We compared the ontogenetic sequence of the fossil forms to that of modern forms. Fossil material came from the Museum Terra Triassic in Euerdorf and originated from the same geological formation (the Hassberge Formation) as the Trusheim material, which is considered to be nearly entirely lost. The specimens were documented using cross-polarized light and processed into high-resolution images. Fluorescence microscopy was used to document exuviae and carcasses of extant representatives of T. cancriformis. Both forms showed an elongation and similar trends in the length/width ratio of the shield during ontogeny. However, differences were found in the starting point of the developmental processes. Fossil forms start out with a more roundly shaped shield, which becomes more elliptical, while extant forms already start with a more elliptical shield shape. Further differences between extant and fossil forms were found upon comparing shield to trunk ratios. All differences are highly significant statistically. These differences in ontogeny cast severe doubt on the interpretation that T. cancriformis has been static for 237 million years. While the term “living fossil” is misleading and its use should be discouraged in general, it seems to be especially inappropriate to apply it to T. cancriformis.  相似文献

Life table data for interactions between Anagasta kühniella and its ichneumon parasite Venturia canescens in two room ecosystems (A & B) have been analyzed in an attempt to explain and model each room situation. The life table data have been presented in the form of a graphical key-factor analysis, and have been further analyzed by an investigation of the density relationships between the different mortalities and the Angasta densities upon which the mortalities act.
  2. In room A (1.2 gm food per container), the parasites were present throughout the interaction. Egg and early larval mortality (k1) appeared to be directly density-dependent and was the sole stabilizing influence when introduced into the model for room A. The area of discovery of the parasite was relatively constant and its mean value was used to calculate parasitism (k3) in the model. All other mortalities were density-independent and treated as being constant at their mean values. The model predicts a series of oscillations of decreasing amplitude which are somewhat similar to those observed in the Anagasta population during the early stages of the interaction. The observed mean densities of host and parasite were very close to those predicted.
  3. In room B, the parasites were absent for the first 8 generations (1- 2gm food per container). Model B1 covers this period and includes a direct density-dependent component describing changes in k1, the remaining mortalities being constant. The observed mean densities approximate to the calculated densities. The parasites were present from the ninth generation and after the eleventh generation the food per container was increased to 7.2 gm. Model B2 covers the period in room B from generation 11. The most important component of k1 after the parasites were established is a delayed density-dependent one which appeared to be due to wounding of very small larvae by the probing activities of the parasites. Since the changes in k1 could not be suitably predicted, the observed values were used in model B2. This delayed component was not detected in room A due to the relatively small range of parasite densities in room A compared with the 600-fold change in densities in room B. The calculated area of discovery for the parasite population in each generation was found to vary inversely with searching parasite density, and this ‘interference relationship’ was used in the submodel for parasitism. Again, this relationship was not detected in room A due to the much smaller range of parasite densities there. Model B2 gives oscillations in host and parasite populations arising from parasitism being a delayed density-dependent mortality. The correspondence with the observed oscillations is partly due to the actual k1-values being used and partly because the submodel for parasitism adequately describes the observed changes in k3. The tendency for these oscillations to decrease in amplitude is due to both the damping effect of parasite interference and the direct density-dependent component of k1.

Summary Selected strains of vascular endothelial cells, grown as confluent monolayers on tissue culture plastic, generate flat networks of cellular cords that resemble beds of capillaries—a phenomenon referred to as “spontaneous angiogenesis in vitro”. We have studied spontaneous angiogenic activity by a clonal population (clone A) of bovine aortic endothelial cells to indentify processes that mediate the development of cellular networks. Confluent cultures of clone A endothelial cells synthesized type I collagen, a portion of which was incorporated into narrow, extracellular cables that formed a planar network beneath the cellular monolayer. The collagenous cables acted as a template for the development of cellular networks: flattened, polygonal cells of the monolayer that were in direct contact with the cables acquired spindle shapes, associated to form cellular cords, and became elevated above the monolayer. Networks of cables and cellular cords did not form in a strain of bovine aortic endothelial cells that did not synthesize type I collagen, or when traction forces generated by clone A endothelial cells were inhibited with cytochalasin D. In a model of cable development, tension applied by a confluent monolayer of endothelial cells reorganized a sheetlike substrate of malleable type I collagen into a network of cables via the formation and radial enlargement of perforations through the collagen sheet. Our results point to a general involvement of extracellular matrix templates in two-dimensional (planar) models of vascular development in vitro. For several reasons, planar models simulate invasive angiogenesis poorly. In contrast, planar models might offer insights into the growth and development of planar vascular systems in vivo.  相似文献

Soil water resource, together with the surface and sub-surface water resource, is essential to the regional water balance and world water cycle. A total of 90 soil samples were collected from 30 different soil profiles of dry fields throughout Chongqing, China randomly to show how soil could be a crucial part of water resources by discussing their five types of calculated soil water reservoir capacities, namely the total soil water reservoir capacity (mm) (TC), soil water storage capacity (mm) (SC), unavailable soil water reservoir capacity (mm) (UC), available soil water reservoir capacity (mm) (AC), and soil dead water storage capacity (mm) (DC) in certain layer, respectively. Overall, the total soil water reservoir capacity in 0–40 cm was about 209 mm, of which 70 mm belonged to available soil water reservoir capacity. Not all the five types of soil water reservoir capacities had significant correlations between each other. Soil structure, especially the size and quantity of soil pore was mainly determined by soil particle composition (clay, silt, and sand content). The more sand and less clay led to the more soil macropores, which provided room for soil water. Thus, clay, silt, and sand content jointly produced profound influence on soil water reservoir capacities. Nevertheless, specific water capacity and topographic factors displayed weak correlations to soil water reservoir capacities, which required further research works. Ultimately, the better regression models were achieved by multiple regression analysis coupled with “merged groups PCA” than by multiple regression analysis with “all variables PCA”. UC, SC, TC and DC could be well simulated (mostly R2 > 0.70; P < 0.05) through normal multiple regression analysis using original variables as well as multiple regression analysis with “merged groups PCA”. Only regression models of TC and DC were highly significant (mostly R2 > 0.70; P < 0.05) through “all variables PCA” method. And there were poor coefficients of determination (R2) for AC (mostly R2 < 0.40; P < 0.05) by all the three regression methods.  相似文献
