Worldwide Late Cambrian—Silurian lithofacies patterns indicate that the platforms of that time were sites of accumulation of two essentially different rocks suites: the platform carbonate rocks and the platform terrigenous rocks. Most of the platform rocks accumulated as sediments in shallow marine environments similar to those of the present but far more widely spread.Present-day marine benthic faunas are distributed in depth zones which are primarily controlled by temperature. Faunas tend to occur in substrate-related discrete clusters (communities) within each life zone; similar substrates in different depth zones commonly have different faunal associations. Individual phyletic stocks may encounter environmental optimum or near-optimum conditions in certain areas, that commonly are revealed by an abundance of species and individuals within species in each stock. Environmental optimum conditions depend upon availability of food that may be utilized, modes of feeding of the animals present, water motion, and substrate, among other factors. Organisms in past seas were distributed in patterns similar to those of the present.Carbonate platforms were particularly widespread during the latest Cambrian—Early Ordovician. Intertidal environments spread widely across those platforms during that time and characteristic faunal associations developed in them. Saukiid and related tribolites dominated latest Cambrian carbonate platform intertidal faunas. The Early Ordovician carbonate platform intertidal was dominated by archeogastropod-nautiloid cephalopod faunas. These animals were joined by tabulate corals and certain brachiopods during the latter part of the Ordovician and Silurian as prominent faunal elements in the carbonate platform intertidal—shallow subtidal. Cruziana and related trace fossils, bivalves, and certain tribolites (notably homalonotids and dalmanitids) dominated most terrigenous platform intertidal—shallow subtidal faunas of the Ordovician and Silurian.Articulate brachiopods (primarily orthoids, strophomenoids, and rhynchonelloids) appear to have been relatively prominent during the Early Ordovician in shallow subtidal environments on both carbonate and terrigenous platforms and to have spread down the bathymetric gradient into increasingly deeper subtidal areas of both platforms during the latter part of the Ordovician. Tribolites dominated faunas in relatively moderate to deep subtidal environments on both platforms during the early part of the Ordovician. They were gradually replaced by brachiopods in first the shallower, and later the deeper subtidal as dominant members of the faunas. Brachiopods (primarily pentameroids and spiriferoids) dominated nearly all Silurian warm-water subtidal environments from the shallow subtidal to the edges of the platforms.Platform uplifts in the Middle Ordovician and glacio-eustatic sea-level fluctuations in the Late Ordovician caused environmental changes across the platforms that were accompanied by marked replacements among marine benthic faunas in all environments. The distribution of Ordovician carbonate platforms and glacial deposits suggests that an Ordovician polar region may have been close to present-day equatorial Africa and that Ordovician warm temperate-tropical regions lay close to the present-day North Pole.  相似文献

A model of Early Cambrian trilobite biogeography in the North Atlantic region (Theokritoff 1979. Lethaia 12 , 281–295) is reviewed and modified in the light of new data. The presence of Wanneria in conglomerates bearing the Elliptocephala asaphoides fauna strengthens correlation of the E. asaphoides fauna as well as, by implication, the upper part of the Calluvia Zone with the middle part of the Bonnia-Olenellus Zone. The faunas of the Bastion Formation of East Greenland and of the Devil's Cove Limestone of northern Newfoundland are reinterpreted as shelf faunas. Additional occurrences of Archaeocyatha are noted in Spain and northwest Scotland but reports of Archaeocyatha in northern Norway and East Germany are not authenticated. Neither Salterella nor 'Volborthella' are now recognized as characteristic of any trilobite province. Although Ordovician acritarch provinces show congruence with trilobite provinces, available data on Early Cambrian plankton are not sufficient to support algal provincialism. Interpretation of the geological record suggests that the Early Cambrian lapetus Ocean was stratified with a well-mixed oxygenated zone overlying a phosphate-rich oxygen minimum zone and that the Elliptocephala asaphoides fauna should be reinterpreted as a warm-water fauna.  相似文献

Compilation of the marine, benthic megafossils from approximately the mid-Ashgill of the Mediterranean region, including much of Central and Southern Europe plus North Africa, and elsewhere indicates a warm interval featuring bioclastic limestone and a warm climate marine fauna. These mid-Ashgill faunas immediately precede the latest Ashgillian, Hirnantian, cool interval that featured widespread glaciation, and are underlain by typical, cold water, Mediterranean Realm, older Ordovician rocks and faunas. The cause or causes responsible for the brief warm interval are uncertain, but may have involved a warm water gateway that is geographically still not located. There is a possibility that South Africa was similarly affected by this roughly mid-Ashgillian marine situation. Early Paleozoic bauxite minerals and kaolins in northwestern Sudan and kaolins elsewhere in North Africa may represent the same time interval, which would suggest that there was a non-marine amelioration of the local climate as well as the marine effects.  相似文献

Palaeobiogeographic patterns of Early Jurassic ostracods from the northern and southern hemispheres (96 sections located in Europe, North Africa, Western Australia and North and South America) based on 243 species-level records document global patterns of distribution that can be compared to those previously published on ostracods from the European Epicontinental Sea and Tethyan and South Panthalassa areas. All described records of ostracods from both hemispheres spanning the Hettangian to Early Toarcian have been compiled and verified, and their patterns of origin and distribution have been interpreted. Jaccard coefficient of similarity was used to asses similarities among European, American and Tethyan ostracod shelf faunas. The numerical analysis shows a progressive longitudinal gradient in provincialism through the Early Jurassic, consistent with the northward drift of Tethyan ostracod faunas towards the European Epicontinental Sea and the southward movement of European taxa into Tethys and Panthalassa oceans. The spread of cosmopolitan species and extinction of endemic species, allied to the disappearance of geographical barriers, warmer climate conditions and rising sea levels can explain the reduction in ostracod diversity and the east-west provincialism throughout the Early Jurassic. Interchange between hemispheres, including bipolar distributions, are recognized from the Sinemurian time, pointing out that for most of the studied period, the climate worldwide was warm and tropical.  相似文献

Abstract: Early Ordovician conodont faunas of the Thung Song Formation on Tarutao Island, southern peninsular Thailand, consist of 14 known species belonging to 17 genera, and eight undescribed species. Utahconus tarutaoensis and Filodontus tenuis are new species. Three conodont zones: the Rossodus manitouensis Zone, the Utahconus tarutaoensis Zone and the Filodontus tenuis Zone, in ascending order, are defined in the study sections. These are coeval with the interval from the Rossodus manitouensis Zone to the Acodus deltatusOneotodus costatus Zone of the standard zonation in the North American Midcontinent. Based on the conodonts studied here and fossils previously reported from Tarutao Island, the Thung Song Formation is early Tremadocian to middle Arenig (Ibexian) in age. This formation is lithostratigraphically subdivided into the S1 to S5 members, and our study sections consist of the S1 to S3 members. These strata accumulated on a shelf in the Early Ordovician. The depositional environments of the limestones making up the S1 and S3 members were in deeper‐shelf conditions. Limestone and shale of the S2 member formed in a shallow‐water, high‐energy environment.  相似文献

In the Sand?kl? region of the Taurus Range of Turkey, greater than 3000 m in thickness metamorphosed siliciclastics and volcanics (Kocayayla Group) underlies the trilobite-and conodont-bearing Middle-Late Cambrian Hudai Quartzite and Çaltepe Formation. The Kocayayla Group, previously regarded as Infracambrian or Precambrian, is dated for the first time as Early Cambrian on the basis of trace fossils. Cruziana ?fasciculata, C. ?salomonis, ?Cruziana isp., ?Diplichnites isp., Monomorphichnus isp., Petalichnus isp., Rusophycus ?avalonensis, R. ?latus, Arenicolites isp., cf. Altichnus foeyni, Planolites isp., Skolithos isp., and ?Treptichnus isp. have been recognised. These trace fossils are considered Tommotian or younger in age but older than the overlying, trilobite and conodont bearing Middle Cambrian limestones of the Çaltepe Formation. The trace fossils were likely produced by trilobites, suspension feeding annelids and deposit feeding “worms”, probably polychaetes. Sections bearing abundant Skolithos represent the Skolithos ichnofacies, which is typical of high energy environments with loose sandy, well sorted to slightly muddy substrates in intertidal to shallow subtidal zones. The other trace fossils represent the Cruziana ichnofacies, which is typical of subtidal, poorly sorted and soft substrates, from moderate energy to low energy environments between the fairweather and storm wave base. The Kocayayla Group was deposited at an early stage in a shallow marine stable shelf condition. The shelf subsided in a later stage and was affected by normal faults along which mafic and felsic volcanic rocks erupted. The volcanic activity had ceased and a shallow marine clastic sedimentation took place in the final stage of the shelf development. The Kocayayla Group was deformed and metamorphosed before the deposition of the trilobite-bearing Middle-Upper Cambrian succession.  相似文献

During the Late Eocene two marine provinces existed in the epicontinental Europe: a West European province with a warm water foraminiferal fauna of Tethyan character and an East European province with a cold water fauna. The boundary between these provinces was situated in Poland. The main dispersion routes of the Late Eocene foraminiferal faunas coincide with some important tectonic features.  相似文献

The Bohemo‐Iberian regional scale for South Gondwana, involving the ‘Mediterranean Province’, comprises five regional stages (Arenigian, Oretanian, Dobrotivian, Berounian and Kralodvorian) plus the global Tremadocian and Hirnantian. The predominance of shallow‐water taxa in those high‐latitude faunas imposes serious difficulties for correlating the regional succession with the formal global chronostratigraphy because of the almost total absence of the key graptolites and conodonts defining the base of the standard series, stages and stage slices. Instead, the abundant benthic faunas (trilobites, brachiopods, molluscs, echinoderms) of South Gondwanan origin largely dominated in the area from the middle Darriwilian to the late Katian. The poleward faunal migration of originally Avalonian, Baltic, Laurentian and even Asiatic taxa during the Boda Event of global warming progressively ends with the endemicity in the region, where the ensuing benthic assemblages were severely affected by the Hirnantian glaciation. The regional scale significantly improves the precision of correlations between Ordovician strata from SW and central Europe, North Africa and a large part of the Middle East. An updated record of palaeontological data from areas where Mediterranean faunas remain practically unknown, or are still poorly investigated, is also included. Palaeobiogeographical relationships based on the distribution of faunas across South Gondwana are suggested as an improvement for positioning many territories in modern palaeogeographical reconstructions and offer a constructive approach to problems related to the pre‐Variscan and pre‐Alpine orogenic puzzles.  相似文献

A late Middle Cambrian fauna from Nyeboe Land, North Greenland, is described. It is demonstrated that the fauna, dominated by agnostid trilobites, belongs to the Atlantic province. The samples indicate the presence of the zones of Ptychagnostus punctuosus and Jincella brachymetopa. The distribution of the Middle Cambrian faunas is briefly discussed.  相似文献

The Early Ordovician bathyurid faunal province includes North America, Greenland, Spitsbergen, Scotland, and western Ireland and Norway. Dominant provincial lithofacies and biofacies include a Dolomite Suite with molluscan-stromatolite fossil content rimmed by Limestone Belts with dominantly trilobite-brachiopod faunas on a platform. Shale Belt rocks bearing graptolites, deposited on the platform slopes, rim the Limestone Belts. Volcanic rock-rich terrain partly borders the Shale Belts. Correlation between the lithofacies indicates that change from an expansion to contraction phase of a proto-Atlantic coincided with uplift of the carbonate platform and with tectonic activity in the Atlantic volcanic rock rich terrain. Brachiopods replaced trilobites as dominant faunal elements in more shallow platform waters at the same time. High trilobite diversity remained in deeper waters near platform margins. The changes took place in Earliest Mohawk-ian (Latest Arenig-Earliest Llanvirn).  相似文献

About 1400 otoliths were collected from a section of the Mandrikovka Beds (Priabonian) from Dnepropetrovsk (Ukraine). In this collection 35 taxa have been determined, four of them are new:Hemirhamphus sosimovichi n. sp., “genus äff.Apogon” ukrainicus n. sp.,Apogon bargi n. sp and “genus Percoideorum“andreevae n. sp. In the Mandrikovka associationApogon is the dominating genus. Together with some other warm-preferent genera the Apogonidae indicate warm water temperatures. On the other hand the common occurrence of cool-preferentRaniceps does not agree with this conclusion. The abnormal coexistence of these extremely different groups indicate a very complex hydrographical Situation during Sedimentation of the Mandrikovka beds which will be discussed. In comparison to western European Paleogene faunas the Mandrikovka association is very closely related to Late Eocene (Priabonian) faunas whereas relations to Early Oligocene faunas of the North Sea Basin remain on a markedly lower level.

A multivariate analysis was used to determine the faunistic relationships of the northwestern Argentinean graptolite faunas of Floian age to faunas from Baltica, Avalonia, Laurentia and SW China. A statistical analysis at the species level of the five geographic regions for the Lower Floian was performed with the classic Jaccard's index. The resulting affinity dendrogram shows stronger relationships between Early Floian graptolite faunas of northwestern Argentina and those from Baltica, with less obvious similarities to Great Britain (Avalonia) faunas and only weak affinities to North American (Laurentia) and Chinese (SW China) graptolite faunas. The statistical analysis confirms the paleobiogeographic relationships previously observed in other areas of the Cordillera Oriental, and supports the hypothesis that during the Early Ordovician, northwestern Argentina was located at middle to high latitudes, corresponding to the Atlantic Faunal Realm of cold water graptolite biofacies. The studied graptolite material from the Quinilicán and Agua Chica sections is preserved in shales and siltstones interbedded with fine to medium-grained sandstones corresponding to the lower part of the Acoite Formation. The biostratigraphic implications of the associated graptolites are briefly discussed, and Trichograptus dilaceratus (Herrmann), Acrograptus gracilis (Törnquist), Expansograptus latus (T.S. Hall) and Corymbograptus v-fractus tullbergi (Monsen) are described from the Argentine Cordillera Oriental for the first time.  相似文献

Sheehan, P. M.: The relation of Late Ordovician glaciation to the Ordovician-Silurian changeover in North American brachiopod faunas.
The Ordovician-Silurian changeover of brachiopod faunas in North American epicontinental seas involved the abrupt extinction of endemic Late Ordovician stocks and subsequent repopulation of North American seas by Old World taxa. The Late Ordovician Gondwanaland glaciation may have lowered sea levels sufficiently to place severe stress on the widespread shallow marine faunas in North America, resulting in their eventual extinction. The Late Ordovician depositional history in North America is not well enough known to establish the presence of a latest Ordovician regression, but the earliest Silurian was an interval of off-lap in North America. Therefore, the glacial lowering of sea level is considered to be the most likely cause of the faunal changeover.  相似文献

EARLY CAMBRIAN BRACHIOPODS FROM NORTH-EAST GREENLAND   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Abstract:  A diverse assemblage of late Early Cambrian brachiopods is described from the Bastion and Ella Island formations of North-East Greenland. The fauna includes nine species, representing all three extant brachiopod subphyla in addition to the stem group brachiopod Mickwitzia cf. occidens . Four linguliforms: Eoobolus priscus , Botsfordia caelata , Micromitra bella , Vandalotreta sp., three rynchonelliforms: Obolella crassa , Kutorgina reticulata , and an unidentified chileid plus a possible craniiform species occur. The fauna shows similarities to late Early Cambrian (Dyeran Stage) brachiopod faunas of eastern Canada and the United States, but also to faunas from the late Early Cambrian (Botomian–Toyonian equivalent) of Australia, Antarctica and Siberia.  相似文献

Two important lagerstätten of Early Triassic gastropods, the Sinbad Limestone (Utah, USA) and the Gastropod Oolite (North Italy) yield about 40% of all described Early Triassic species. This great contribution to the global diversity and the exceptional good preservation render high information content, which characterizes fossil lagerstätten. The Smithian Sinbad Limestone contains the most diverse Early Triassic gastropod fauna. At the type locality, it occurs in single, probably storm-induced shell bed within a series of high energy deposits underlain by intertidal microbial mats and subtidal oolite/peloid shoals. The main shell bed contains about 40 invertebrate taxa. Gastropods, scaphopods, and bivalves are most abundant and form an assemblage, which is dominated by small neritaemorphs, the opisthobranch Cylindrobullina convexa and the scaphopod Plagioglypta (annulated tubes). This assemblage lived on shallow, subtidal soft-bottoms based on sedimentological and ecological characteristics. The Dienerian (to Smithian?) Gastropod Oolite Member (North Italy) has extremely abundant, probably salinity-controlled gastropod faunas with low species richness. Almost monospecific assemblages of Pseudomurchisonia kokeni as well as assemblages with about four species are present in the Gastropod Oolite. Modern hydrobiid mudsnail faunas which are adapted to strongly fluctuating salinity in intertidal to shallow subtidal coastal areas form probably a suitable model for the Gastropod Oolite biota. Gastropods from the Werfen- and Moenkopi-Formation lagerstätten are well preserved compared to other Early Triassic deposits. The high contribution to the global diversity of just two sites suggests very incomplete sampling and preservational bias. However, the low richness of the major faunas reflects depauperate Early Triassic faunas and slow recovery from the Permian/Triassic crisis.  相似文献

Sediment samples from several locations in the southern part of the Vestfold Hills have been examined for their foraminiferid content. Those from Early Pliocene sediments of Marine Plain immediately east of Burton Lake contain little foraminiferid evidence of marine deposition. Those from mid-late Holocene sections in and near the lakes contain good open marine faunas of species now known to be living on the continental shelf west of Cape Darnley.Foraminiferid faunas characterized by calcareous forms are most common, the most prevalent dominated by Globocassidulina crassa. The faunas examined contrast markedly with those in the present Prydz Bay which is characterized by agglutinated forms. The results, in relation to planktonic faunas, conflict with an earlier record of a diverse fauna.  相似文献

The northern boundary of the warm temperate region of the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States is set at Cape Hatteras; the southern boundary lies at Cape Canaveral. There is some spillover of cool temperate species south of Cape Hatteras into North Carolina and spillover of warm temperate species south of Cape Canaveral toward Palm Beach. Elements of the warm temperate flora also extend into the northern Gulf of Mexico, but precise limits to the flora cannot be drawn there. Thirty-one species are endemic to the warm temperate flora. The inshore waters of North Carolina include approximately equal numbers of species with northern and southern centres of distribution; the species of the offshore waters have predominantly southern affinities, but also include most of the endemic species. Seasonal changes in the shallow water flora of North Carolina reflect eurythermal cool temperate and tropical elements in winter and summer respectively and a year-round warm temperate element. These groupings have been verified by experimental studies in which light and temperature were varied. The deep water flora is a summer flora dominated by perennial species. The inshore, eurythermal cool temperate and tropical species have a variety of cryptic stages by which they persist throughout the year.Paper presented at the Seaweed Biogeography Workshop of the International Working Group on Seaweed Biogeography, held from 3–7 April 1984 at the Department of Marine Biology, Rijks-universiteit Groningen (The Netherlands).
