A sample of 1,600 unrelated individuals in Lagos (Nigeria) were examined for attached or free ear lobes. Pedigree data were obtained for 11 families by questionnaire. The corrected proportion of attached among the progeny of free X free was 0.27 compared to an expected value of 0.25. The observed frequencies of the three types of marriages were not significantly different from the expected values derived from the frequencies of the traits in the population. Males and females in the population were equally affected by the traits. Thus, the population frequency of attached is 25.37%, a value within the range for Caucasoids but lower than for Mongoloids. 相似文献

The Marma, Tripura, and Chakma are tribal populations of South Asian countries such as Bangladesh. The populations are thought to be immigrants who started moving from their original home in the Far East toward the west and south. We randomly selected 80 Marma, 53 Tripura, and 43 Chakma to determine acetylation capacity and acetylator phenotype. The mean acetylation capacities were 63% in the Marma, 65% in the Tripura, and 70% in the Chakma. The acetylator phenotype was bimodally distributed as fast and slow acetylator. The frequencies of fast acetylator were 83% in the Marma, 89% in the Tripura, and 88% in the Chakma. According to acetylation capacity, the tribes are different from the founder nontribal populations of Bangladesh. They identify themselves as having a separate single population origin. The frequency of fast acetylator predicted served as the acetylator status of the Far East Asian population. The segregation of populations by acetylator phenotype on geographic longitude might be appropriate for geonational identification of Asian populations. 相似文献

A total of 360 randomly selected specimens of Clarias gariepinus (Clariidae) recovered from Lekki Lagoon were examined for intestinal helminth parasites. Parasite prevalence and worm burden were low; 17 (4.72%) of the specimens examined were infected with gastrointestinal helminths. The helminth worms recovered include, three cestodes Polyonchobothrium clarias, Stocksia pujehuni and Wenyonia acuminata and a nematode, Paracamallanus cyathopharynx. There was no statistically significant difference in the infection of the male and female Clarias gariepinus; the infection rates in male and female samples were 5.75% and 3.76% respectively. Parasite prevalence was related to the length and weight of the specimens. The fish samples were observed to show negative allometric growth and smaller samples recorded higher helminth infection. 相似文献

The biology of the population of Ethmalosa fimbriata occurring in the Lagos lagoon was investigated. Three size groups, 35–69 mm (Yoyo), 70–169 mm (Efolo) and 170 mm and above (Agbodo) occur in the lagoon and the spatial distribution of these size groups and the length frequency distribution of the species is given. The relationship between length, weight, age and growth is discussed and the food and feeding intra-relationship of the size groups is shown. Information on the fecundity and possible spawning periods is discussed. 相似文献

The length-weight relationship, condition factor, fecundity and food and feeding habits ofPellonula afzeliusi (Johnels) in Lagos Lagoon were investigated. The standard length of 1832 specimens examined ranged between 3.5 and 9.4 cm (total length 3.9 cm–11.4 cm) and was larger than reported elsewhere in West African man-made lakes. Specimens exhibited positive allometric growth. Their condition factor increased with individual size. Females had a slightly higher condition factor than males. The number of mature ova per female ranged between 330 and 33,649. There was a higher correlation between fecundity and weight than between fecundity and length. The major food items were crustaceans, insects and fishes. There were distinct differences in the feeding habits in relation to size. A total of 2215 specimens of Ilisha africana (Bloch) were examined for the food habits of the species off the Lagos coast, Nigeria. Their food consisted mainly of crustaceans, fish and molluscs; less important in the stomach contents were insects, annelids, chaetognaths, coelenterates, urochordates and phytoplankton. The incidence of nematodes in the stomachs was low. Monthly variation of food as well as variation with fish size and water depth were examined, as was the relationship of food composition to components of the plankton fauna. Feeding habits of I. africana were compared with those Sardinella maderensis (Lowe), Galeoides decadatylus (Bloch), Brachydeuterus auritus (Val.) and Vomer setapinnis (Mitchill); there was an overall diversity in the diets of these fish species. 相似文献

Characterization of human lymphocyte N-acetyltransferase (NAT) for specific activity, substrate specificity, inhibition, pH optimum, apparent Km, kinetic mechanism, trypsin stability, freezing stability, and heat stability was carried out in rapid and slow isoniazid (INH) acetylators. There is a statistically significant difference in the heat stability of lymphocyte NAT from rapid and slow INH phenotypes. The lymphocyte enzyme from rapid INH acetylators is less heat stable than the lymphocyte enzyme from slow INH acetylators. This is an indication of a structural, possibly polymorphic, difference in lymphocyte NAT from the two acetylator phenotypes. 相似文献

The maturation development, spawning period, oogenesis, fecundity and sex ratio of Ilisha africana off the Lagos Coast, Nigeria were investigated. Six macroscopic and seven microscopic stages of gonad maturity were identified. Maturity was attained at 12.0 cm total length. Breeding occurred throughout the year with the peak spawning between May and December. Oogenesis consisted of seven stages and breeding marks were observed in the species. Fecundity ranged between 2098 and 11 687 eggs. There was a slightly higher correlation between fecundity and weight than between fecundity and length. The egg diameter varied from 0.77 to 1.35 mm. The overall sex ratio was 1 male to 0.97 female. The females however predominated over the males during most months in the peak breeding period. 相似文献

Prevalence rates reported for malaria in pregnancy in Nigeria vary considerably. The accuracy of results of malaria diagnosis is dependent on training, experience, and motivation of the microscopist as well as the laboratory facility available. Results of training programmes on malaria microscopy have shown low levels of sensitivity and specificity of those involved in malaria diagnosis routinely and for research. This study was done to ascertain the true prevalence of malaria in pregnancy in Lagos, South-West Nigeria. A total of 1,084 pregnant women were recruited into this study. Blood smears stained with Giemsa were used for malaria diagnosis by light microscopy. Malaria infection during pregnancy presents mostly as asymptomatic infection. The prevalence of malaria in this population was 7.7% (95% confidence interval; 6.2-9.4%). Factors identified to increase the risk of malaria infection include young maternal age (< 20 years), and gravidity (primigravida). In conclusion, this study exposes the over-diagnosis of malaria in pregnancy and the need for training and retraining of laboratory staffs as well as establishing the malaria diagnosis quality assurance programme to ensure the accuracy of malaria microscopy results at all levels. 相似文献

A covalent, catalytic intermediate of cytosolic liver acetyl coenzyme A: arylamine N-acetyltransferase (EC 2.3.1.5) from rapid acetylator rabbits (III/J) was isolated and chemically characterized. The active site was further studied using two covalent inhibitors, [2-3H]iodoacetic acid and bromoacetanilide. Inhibition experiments with [2-3H]iodoacetic acid at pH 6.9 showed that the incorporation of 0.7 mol of [2-3H]iodoacetic acid/mol of N-acetyltransferase led to rapid, irreversible loss of enzyme activity. Preincubation of the enzyme with acetyl coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA) completely protected against inactivation by [2-3H]iodoacetic acid. After incubating the N-acetyltransferase with [2-3H]acetyl-CoA in the absence of an acceptor amine, an acetyl-cysteinyl-enzyme intermediate was isolated and characterized. Preincubation of N-acetyltransferase with iodoacetic acid prevented the incorporation of the [2-3H]acetyl group into the enzyme. The product analog, bromoacetanilide, caused a rapid irreversible loss of N-acetyltransferase activity. The reaction was pseudo first-order and saturated at high bromoacetanilide concentrations (KI = 0.67 mM; k3 = 1 min-1). Preincubation of the enzyme with acetyl-CoA prevented inactivation by the inhibitor. The acceptor amine 4-ethylaniline did not prevent inhibition. Incorporation of the inhibitor was directly proportional to the loss of activity showing a 1:1 stoichiometry of enzyme to inhibitor. The target amino acid was identified as cysteine by amino acid analysis of inhibitor-treated enzyme. 相似文献

Procainamide (Pa) and its active metabolite--N-acetylprocainamide (NAPA)--pharmacokinetics was studied in 12 healthy volunteers in relation to acetylation phenotype. Acetylation phenotype was determined with sulphadimidine test. Blood serum levels of PA and NAPA were determined 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 3.0; 4.0; 8.0; and 12 hours following a single oral dose of 500 mg. Blood levels of both PA and NAPA were assayed with immunofluorescence polarization technique (FPIA), using TDx apparatus manufactured by Abbott. Pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated with the aid of pharmacokinetics independent of the model principles. All results were analysed statistically (AWOA). It was found that PA and NAPA pharmacokinetics depends on acetylation phenotype. Blood serum PA levels were higher in slow acetylators during the whole follow-up whereas NAPA levels were lower. Blood serum PA levels in rapid acetylators were decreased while NAPA levels were increased. Acetylation phenotype determined in sulphadimidine test confirmed bimodal procainamide acetylation. 相似文献

Microbial induced discolorations are an unsightly feature occurring on painted walls in Lagos, the commercial hub of Nigeria. Very few studies have been carried out conventionally about the microbial community structure of discolored painted walls in Nigeria therefore, knowledge of the true microbial diversity is elusive. To further our understanding of the phylogenetic diversity of representative microbial community on 40 discolored and three clean-looking buildings, a comparative DNA sequence analysis of 16S rDNA genes was undertaken. Following DNA extraction, portions of the rDNA genes were amplified by PCR and sequenced. Resulting sequences were compared with GenBank data base sequences. Fifteen unique fungal sequences and one bacterial sequence were obtained. Majority (37.50%) of rDNA sequences analyzed, represent the genus Meyerozyma of which the novel fungus Meyerozyma guilliermondii, which to our knowledge, has not yet been implicated in painted walls was detected. Clones from the discolored painted wall isolates also produced a data set in which 31.25% of sequences were related to Fusarium proliferatum and 6.25% were Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The remaining sequences clustered with members of the genera Candida (6.25%), Aspergillus (12.5%) and Cerrena (6.25%). The study provides reliable data on microbial communities on painted walls and information for paint biocide formulation. 相似文献

Three novel human NAT2 alleles (NAT2*5D, NAT2*6D, and NAT2*14G) were identified and characterized in a yeast expression system. The common rapid (NAT2*4) and slow (NAT2*5B) acetylator human NAT2 alleles were also characterized for comparison. The novel recombinant NAT2 allozymes catalyzed both N- and O-acetyltransferase activities at levels comparable with NAT2 5B and significantly below NAT2 4, suggesting that they confer slow acetylation phenotype. In order to investigate the molecular mechanism of slow acetylation in the novel NAT2 alleles, we assessed mRNA and protein expression levels and protein stability. No differences were observed in NAT2 mRNA expression among the novel alleles, NAT2*4 and NAT2*5B. However NAT2 5B and NAT2 5D, but not NAT2 6D and NAT2 14G protein expression were significantly lower than NAT2 4. In contrast, NAT2 6D was slightly (3.4-fold) and NAT2 14G was substantially (29-fold) less stable than NAT2 4. These results suggest that the 341T --> C (Ile(114) --> Thr) common to the NAT2*5 cluster is sufficient for reduction in NAT2 protein expression, but that mechanisms for slow acetylator phenotype differ for NAT2 alleles that do not contain 341T --> C, such as the NAT2*6 and NAT2*14 clusters. Different mechanisms for slow acetylator phenotype in humans are consistent with multiple slow acetylator phenotypes. 相似文献

A nematode parasite Philometra translucida Walton (1927) was found in the ovaries of Pseudotolithus senegalensis Cuvier & Valenciennes (1833), P. typus Bleaker (1863) and P. elongatus Bowditch (1863), the most abundant and commercial sciaenid species in the Nigerian inshore waters. The parasite measured 56·0–59·0 cm in length. It occupied one-third to two-thirds of the mesenteries of the matured ovaries in severe cases of infection. The incidence of infestation, highest during peak spawning, was 10·0% in P. senegalensis , 12·0% in P. typus and 20·0% in P. elongatus . Another nematode parasite Coniracaecum sp. Ralliet & Henry (1912) was observed in the ovaries of two specimens of P. typus . 相似文献

In Nigeria, malaria causes up to 11% of maternal mortality. Our main aim was to find out the most common mosquito control measures employed by the pregnant women in Lagos and their effects on malaria infection. The study was carried out over a period of 6 months during which trained interviewers administered questionnaires to 400 pregnant women. The prevalence of malaria was 8.4%. There was no significant association between the prevalence of malaria and age, level of education, or occupation of the participants. Pregnant women in the age range 26-30 had the mean parasite density (409.9 ± 196.80). Insecticide spray (32.8%), mosquito coil (27.5%), and insecticide-treated nets (ITN) (15.5%) were the major mosquito control measures employed by the participants while the prevalence of infection among them were 2.3%, 6.2%, and 3.2%, respectively (P<0.05). Only 18.3% of the women had taken more than one dose of intermittent preventive treatment (IPT), while another 11.8% had taken a single dose. The infection rate among them was 4.1% and 6.4%, respectively. Malaria prevalence was highest among those who had not received any dose of IPT (10%). This study showed that the use of ITN and IPT among the pregnant women were still unacceptably low. It also showed that the use of insecticide spray which was the most common malaria control measure adopted by the participants was effective despite the fact that it is not a National Malaria Control Policy. We recommend that a sustained integrated mosquito management and public education should be strengthened in Nigeria. 相似文献

The metabolism of [14C]acetylisoniazid was studied in male New Zealand White rabbits. Pretreatment of the rabbits with the microsomal enzyme inducers rifampin and phenobarbital had little effect on acetylisoniazid metabolism. Rifampin appears to produce some inhibition of acetylation of the metabolite acetylhydrazine to diacetylhydrazine. Acetylation phenotype was an important factor. Covalent binding of 14C to hepatic protein increased as the acetylation rate decreased. In plasma and urine acetylhydrazine levels were negatively correlated with acetylation rate and diacetylhydrazine levels were positively correlated as one would expect. It was concluded that in the rabbit covalent binding to hepatic protein was more dependent on the acetylation rate than on induction of microsomal oxidase. 相似文献
