We present morphometric and craniometric measurements of the herb field mouse (Apodemus uralensis) from Lithuania and analyze variation of body and skull size across species range. We suppose species is characterized by high size variability, not following Bergmann’s or Murphy’s rules. Preliminary, distinct size differences have been registered in the eastern and southern edges of the distribution range, with these populations having largest individuals according to average body and skull size. In terms of tail length and condylobasal length of the skull, Lithuanian mice on the north-western edge of the species range are among the largest, but in terms of body weight, body length, zygomatic skull width and the length of maxillary toothrow, adult A. uralensis from Lithuania are small and correspond to those from populations on the western edge of the range. The relative skull width (ratio of zygomatic skull width to condylobasal length) of Lithuanian A. uralensis is the smallest across the entire range. In A. uralensis from Lithuania, sex dimorphism is weakly expressed, with hind foot length and postorbital constriction larger in adult males, while the height of the mandibula and length of the mandibular diastema is larger in adult females. Juvenile and subadult A. uralensis from Lithuania differ in body weight, but not in size.  相似文献

In Ruminantia, the lacrimal bone forms a considerable part of the facial skeleton, and the morphology of its facial facet is highly variable when compared to other mammals. In this study, we quantify the species-specific variability in size and shape of the lacrimal facial facet in species of Cervidae (deer) and relate it to systematics and various aspects of their ecology and behavior. We sampled 143 skull specimens from 10 genera; 12 Moschus and 3 Tragulus specimens were used as outgroups. We find that size and shape of the lacrimal facial facet allow differentiating most species analyzed here, except for Mazama gouazoubira and Capreolus capreolus. Size and shape of the lacrimal facial facet vary widely across Cervidae regardless of their systematic relationships, ecology or behavior. Thus, we could not detect a unique signature of adaptational criteria in lacrimal morphology. Our data indicate that the lacrimal facial facet scales allometrically with skull size, in particular, the lacrimojugal length scales positively and the lacrimomaxillar length scales negatively. However, correlation analyses did not reveal any differences in the integration of the lacrimal bone with any specific skull module in any of the species compared. Lastly, we could not ascertain any correlation between the size and position of the preorbital depression with the size and shape of the lacrimal facial facet. We conclude that the lacrimal facial facet is highly flexible and may rapidly adjust to its surrounding bones. Its allometric growth appears to be an example of exaptation: changes in size and shape in the context of the increase of the skull length provide lacrimal contacts, in particular, a lacrimojugal one, which may serve to reduce mechanical loads resulting from increasingly larger antlers in large cervids.  相似文献

2010年10月在贵州省荔波县进行翼手目动物调查过程中,于荔波县洞塘乡捕获14只鼠耳蝠,经鉴定为狭耳鼠耳蝠Myotisblythii。主要鉴别特征:体型中等,前臂长64.60(60.78~67.72)mm(n=14,SD=1.71);耳狭长;耳屏直而细长,顶端尖锐;第三指最长、第五指最短;后足长约为胫长之半;无距缘膜;尾长67.99(60.56~73.82)mm(n=14,SD=3.7);雄性个体无阴茎骨,阴茎长12.58(8.42~15.72)mm(n=5,SD=2.86);颅全长24.09(23.48~24.72)mm(n=6,SD=0.55);头骨窄长;听泡发达;矢状脊较低;上颌内门齿有1个主尖和1个小附尖,外门齿小,与上犬齿分离;第2上前臼齿(P3)稍位于齿列内侧。此种鼠耳蝠为贵州省翼手目新纪录。  相似文献

The skull of a mountain sheep (Ovis canadensis cremnobates) exhibiting osteoporosis was recovered from San Diego County, California. This specimen also exhibited lateral asymmetry of the cranium and rostrum, malocclusion of molars, and mandibular asymmetry. Investigators are cautioned about potentially confusing lesions associated with chronic frontal sinusitis with lesions of osteoporosis in mountain sheep. To our knowledge this is the first report of osteoporosis in this species.  相似文献

A sample of 84 dried skulls of Amia calva has been examined for variations in dermal bones and other parameters. One specimen was found with a single parietal and another with incomplete division of the parietals. Observations on parietal asymmetry, disposition of sutures, number and disposition of postorbitals, infraorbitals, number of dentary and premaxillary teeth, and tooth row/jaw length relations are quantified. Statistical analysis of five paired characters and dispersion analysis of 12 characters shows that the skull growth is isometric. Given a few measurements on a skull it is possible to predict several others.  相似文献

Numerous specimens of Ichthyosaurus are known, but only very few small examples (total length of <1 m) have been assigned beyond Ichthyosaurus sp. Here, we report on a very small specimen (preflexural length of 560 mm) that can be unequivocally assigned to Ichthyosaurus communis due to possessing a unique combination of diagnostic skull and postcranial characters that are found in larger examples of the species. Furthermore, the specimen is identified as a neonate because of the small size, large sclerotic ring relative to the orbital region, and poorly ossified (highly cancellous) bones of the skull and postcranium. It is not an embryo as it is not preserved within an adult specimen and stomach contents are clearly evident. This is therefore the first neonate Ichthyosaurus communis skeleton to be described. The specimen, in the Lapworth Museum of Geology, University of Birmingham, has no provenance data associated with it. A microfossil analysis of the matrix in which the ichthyosaur skeleton is preserved strongly suggests a stratigraphic range of uppermost Hettangian to lowermost Sinemurian age (Lower Jurassic), but does not provide any geographical information.  相似文献

The inner ear of the narwhal (Monodon monoceros) was investigated on the basis of a complete series of microslides of an early fetus. In this well‐preserved specimen, the cochlea is about twice as large as the vestibular apparatus. The latter exhibits a high degree of specialization. Whereas the utriculus and sacculus are of normal size in comparison with those of other mammals, the semicircular canals are miniaturized but not obliterated, as in the case of some adult toothed whales. In comparison with other mammals, there is relatively little perilymphatic space around the vestibular organ, but the inner radius of the lymphatic ducts comes close to that of the adult human. Although there are some hints that the sensitivity of the vestibular system may be high in this species, detailed analysis of the adult narwhal ear is needed to confirm this inference.  相似文献

Skull length is the measurement most commonly used as a standard against which other aspects of cranial morphology are compared to derive an index of relative size or proportions. However, skull length is composed of two different functional components, facial skull and cerebral skull, which vary independently and have different scaling relationships with body size. An analysis of carnivore skull shape with measurements standardized against basicranium length produced very different results than an analysis using skull length as the standard. For example, expressions of relative size of cranial measurements were reduced by 13% in mustelids and increased by 20% in canids, reflecting removal of jaw length (short in mustelids and long in canids) from the comparative standard (basicranial axis length). Cranial measurements scale with higher allometric exponents against basicranial axis length than against skull length.  相似文献

Secondary sexual characters have been hypothesized to signal male quality and should demonstrate a negative relationship between the size of the trait and degree of fluctuating asymmetry because they are costly to produce. We collected morphometric and antler data from 439 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Oklahoma, USA, in order to determine whether measures of antler asymmetry follow the patterns predicted for sexually selected characters. Relative fluctuating asymmetry was negatively related to antler size for all deer and within age groups up to five and a half years of age. We did not detect an association between asymmetry and antler size among deer that were six and a half years or older. When categorizing deer by antler size, we found that deer with small antlers (< or = 33rd percentile) had greater levels of relative asymmetry than deer with large antlers (< or = 67th percentile). The relative asymmetry of antlers was negatively related to age and was greatest in deer that were one and a half years old. Relative asymmetry was also negatively related to carcass mass, inside spread, skull length and body length. These data suggest that asymmetry in the antlers of white-tailed deer may be a reliable signal of quality and, as such, may be important in maintaining honesty in intrasexual advertisements during the breeding season.  相似文献

Bivariate allometric calculations were performed to quantitatively compare skulls of wild cavies with domesticated guinea pigs. Descendents of wild caught Cavia aperea from eastern regions of the species’ distribution area were used, as well as unselected domesticated breeds of guinea pigs differing in outer appearance. The individuals of both groups were kept under similar environmental conditions. Altogether 19 parameters on the skulls and the body weights were used for the analyses. These parameters were studied in relation to greatest skull length and to body size. As a general result the diverse parameters are in most cases significantly different between both groups which is interpreted as a special result of unconsciously selected and genetically determined intraspecific changes concomitant with domestication. The skull does not change in total under the domestication process but in a mosaic manner. However, for the mosaic changes of the diverse parameters in relation to skull length a different picture is valid as related to body weight. This is caused by the fact that the skull of guinea pigs is around 5% shorter independent of the body size, a common effect of domestication also described for other species. Thus, skull length is not an appropriate parameter for body size with respect to such intraspecific investigations, although normally used for the characterization of species in interspecific comparisons of museum materials.Altogether in relation to body weight most of the parameters describing the fascial portion of the skull are shorter in the guinea pig, especially the palatine, the diastema and the mandible but also the nasalia and frontalia lengths as well as the breadth of the rostrum and the zygomaticum are smaller. Most of the occipital skull measures are additionally smaller in the guinea pigs. This is clearly the case for the length and the breadth of the braincase and for the tympanic bulla. The braincase volume is 16.2% smaller, a value only slightly different when compared with the degree of brain size decrease due to domestication as reported for this species in other investigations.  相似文献

Range expansions and increases in the frequency of killer whale (Orcinus orca) sightings have been documented in the eastern Canadian Arctic, presumably the result of climate change‐related sea‐ice declines. However, the effects of increased predator occurrence on this marine ecosystem remain largely unknown. We explore the consequences of climate change‐related range expansions by a top predator by estimating killer whale abundance and their possible consumptive effects on narwhal (Monodon monoceros) in the Canadian Arctic. Individual killer whales can be identified using characteristics such as acquired scars and variation in the shape and size of their dorsal fins. Capture–mark–recapture analysis of 63 individually identifiable killer whales photographed between 2009 and 2018 suggests a population size of 163 ± 27. This number of killer whales could consume >1,000 narwhal during their seasonal residency in Arctic waters. The effects of such mortality at the ecosystem level are uncertain, but trophic cascades caused by top predators, including killer whales, have been documented elsewhere. These findings illustrate the magnitude of ecosystem‐level modifications that can occur with climate change‐related shifts in predator distributions.  相似文献

Study of a newly discovered cranial specimen of Urmiatherium polaki from Karaj Abad site in Maragheh, Iran, allows us to describe the complete skull and present a new diagnosis for this late Miocene mammal species. In the comparative study of the specimen we propose the relative position of the upper teeth as a reliable metrical method for discriminating bovids of similar size. Based on the available information, a skull reconstruction of Urmiatherium polaki is provided and its ecological profile is outlined. Both the cranial and dental features of U. polaki indicate a gregarious grazing bovid of medium size, adapted to uneven ground and exhibiting ramming as the predominant fighting behavior.  相似文献

记述了采自云南罗平晚三叠世法郎组竹杆坡段的比耶鱼一新种──刘氏比耶鱼(Birgeria liui sp. nov.),这是比耶鱼化石在中国的首次发现。刘氏比耶鱼与产自瑞士圣乔治山中三叠世边境沥青层的史氏比耶鱼最为相近,两者仅在尾柄长高之比、尾鳍长短与上下叶外缘交角、背鳍和臀鳍辐状支鳍骨的数目、臀鳍辐状骨骨板的大小、以及侧线管骨化与否等特征上略有差异。比耶鱼与软骨硬鳞鱼超目的鲟形目最为接近,两者共有一系列特征,如除尾上叶外体侧裸露,副蝶骨末端伸达头后,鳃盖骨退化;但比耶鱼同时也具有不少的特有特征,代表了软骨硬鳞鱼超目的另一类群──比耶鱼目(Birgeriiformes ord. nov.)。刘氏比耶鱼的发现进一步表明华南扬子区中、晚三叠世鱼类化石与特提斯西部的鱼群具有密切的动物地理关系。  相似文献

Morphological analysis of the skull of the subterranean rodent Ctenomys , a highly speciose genus which uses both claws and teeth when digging, shows that for a broad range of species size, scaling was associated with both variation and maintenance of shape. Our results show that the angle of incisor procumbency (AIP), a character largely viewed as an adaptation to digging with teeth, is highly variable. We found a non-significant relationship between AIP and basicranial axis (basioccipital + basisphenoid) length, a measure of overall skull size. Accordingly, both small and large Ctenomys species possess either high or low AIP. A significant relationship between AIP and diastema length, given the rostral allometry seen in Ctenomys , suggests that hypermorphosis to a certain extent influences AIP. However, the roots of the incisor are lateral to those of the cheek teeth and their position may thus shift freely. This observation supports the notion that skull structural design, and to a certain extent rostral allometry, underlies variation in AIP. On the other hand, the positive allometry of incisor width and thickness indicates that, in larger species, proportionately powerful incisors are able to resist greater bending forces. We found that the out-lever arm of the jaw adductor muscles scales with positive allometry against basicranial axis length. However, we found an isometric relationship between in- and out-lever arms. In this case, conservation of skull proportions, regardless of variation in size, is a feature possibly related to the maintenance of an effective tooth digging capability. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) plays an important role in thermoregulation in species living in cold environments, given heat can be generated from its chemical energy reserves. Here we investigate the existence of BAT in blubber in four species of delphinoid cetacean, the Pacific white-sided and bottlenose dolphins, Lagenorhynchus obliquidens and Tursiops truncates, and Dall’s and harbour porpoises, Phocoenoides dalli and Phocoena phocoena. Histology revealed adipocytes with small unilocular fat droplets and a large eosinophilic cytoplasm intermingled with connective tissue in the innermost layers of blubber. Chemistry revealed a brown adipocyte-specific mitochondrial protein, uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), within these same adipocytes, but not those distributed elsewhere throughout the blubber. Western blot analysis of extracts from the inner blubber layer confirmed that the immunohistochemical positive reaction was specific to UCP1 and that this adipose tissue was BAT. To better understand the distribution of BAT throughout the entire cetacean body, cadavers were subjected to computed tomography (CT) scanning. Resulting imagery, coupled with histological corroboration of fine tissue structure, revealed adipocytes intermingled with connective tissue in the lowest layer of blubber were distributed within a thin, highly dense layer that extended the length of the body, with the exception of the rostrum, fin and fluke regions. As such, we describe BAT effectively enveloping the cetacean body. Our results suggest that delphinoid blubber could serve a role additional to those frequently attributed to it: simple insulation blanket, energy storage, hydrodynamic streamlining or contributor to positive buoyancy. We believe delphinoid BAT might also function like an electric blanket, enabling animals to frequent waters cooler than blubber as an insulator alone might otherwise allow an animal to withstand, or allow animals to maintain body temperature in cool waters during sustained periods of physical inactivity.  相似文献

Among the famous Middle Pennsylvanian tetrapod fauna from Linton, Ohio, embolomeres are extremely rare and known only from three snout fragments which are referred to as the eogyrinid Leptophractus obsoletus. We describe herein a skull roof fragment from Linton that consists of the left orbital and cheek region and parts of the palate preserved in dorsal view, which belonged to a skull of approximately 100 mm length. Although diagnostic parts such as the tabular horn and the otic region are not preserved, it can be assigned to embolomeres by its attenuated, irregular dermal bone sculpture. The specimen can be interpreted most plausibly as an eogyrinid because of (1) the distinct, mostly continuous lateral lines that appear like a string of beads due to the subdued ridges on their bottom, and (2) the kinetic line between skull table and cheek in combination with the firm suture between the postorbital and intertemporal. The participation of the lacrimal in the anterior orbital margin is unusual for eogyrinids but might represent a juvenile character. Because the eogyrinid skull roof is derived from the same locality and strata as the eogyrinid L. obsoletus, we tentatively assign it to that genus and species.  相似文献

Estimates of leaf size and asymmetry for individual trees are often obtained using sample sizes that are too small to take into account the possibility that size and asymmetry may be affected by the position of the leaf on the tree. This issue was addressed by exploring variation in leaf size and asymmetry within an individual of Alder (Alnus glutinosa). We found differences between branches for leaf size and for signed asymmetry but not for unsigned asymmetry. We also found that the size of a leaf was not correlated with its position on a branch and that the asymmetry of a leaf was not correlated with either its position on a branch or with the asymmetry of its neighbour. Repeated subsampling of a sample of 870 leaves showed that a subsample size approaching 500 leaves was required for consistently reliable estimates of the standard deviation of unsigned asymmetry. Smaller subsamples were required for consistently reliable estimates of mean unsigned asymmetry and of the mean and standard deviation of leaf size, but subsamples of less than 100 leaves provided consistently reliable estimates only of mean leaf size. For this species, reliable estimates of an individual's level of asymmetry are obtained only if several hundred leaves are sampled over several branches, but it is not necessary to sample the same sequence of leaves from each branch.  相似文献

During a survey of bat species diversity from July 2008 to February 2009 in Songtao county of Guizhou Province, one specimen of Rhinolophus was collected from Guizhou. It was identified as a Formosan lesser horseshoe bat, based on the following features: small body size, forearm length of 36. 3mm, the greatest length of skull was 15.16 mm, the cells of lancet were shorter and appeared triangular and showed an acute angle, and forward bending, the lancet was shorter and approximately triangular and had a narrow top, the anterior median swellings of the skull were higher and more vertical, the rear of the sagittal crest was thin, the upper molars were shorter and the length of C~1 - M~3 was 5. 36 mm, the width of M~3 M~3 was 5.24 mm. Rhinolophus monoceros, which is new record in Guizhou and the first found on the Chinese mainland, supports Simmons' prediction that Rhinolophus monoceros may occur in the south of China.  相似文献
