Sesquiterpene lactones from Inezia integrifolia

Inezia integrifolia afforded, in addition to known compounds, three new eudesmanolides and a guaianolide. Two of the eudesmanolides were obtained as a mixture. The relative position of the ester groups could not be determined with certainty. The chemotaxonomy is discussed briefly.

Two eudesmanolides from Sonchus macrocarpus

The aerial parts of Sonchus macrocarpus afforded, in addition to known triterpenes, two new eudesmanolides.     

Eudesmanolides from Calea trichomata

Chemical analysis of Calea trichomata yielded, besides four known eudesmanolides, a new eudesmanolide, trichomatolide A. The structure of the new compound was established by chemical and spectral methods.     

Sesquiterpene lactones from Smyrnium cordifolium

In addition to previously obtained furanosesquiterpenes, two new eudesmanolides and a new glechomanolide were isolated from the fruits of Smyrnium cordifolium, while the roots gave two new eudesmanolides. The new compounds from the fruits were 1β-acetoxy-eudesman-4(15), 7(11)-dien-8,12-olide, 1β-acetoxy-8β-hydroxy-eudesman-4(15),7(11)-dien-8,12-olide, 1β,10α;4α,5β-diepoxy-8-hydroxy-glechomanolide, those obtained from the roots were smyrnicordiolide and the corresponding 8β-hydroxy derivative belonging to a new type of oxepine derivative.     

Neue sesquiterpenlactone aus Aster umbellatus

The investigation of Aster umbellatus afforded six new eudesmanolides and a new selina-triene and from Aster exilis a new tremetone derivative was isolated. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and by some chemical transformations. The chemotaxonomic situation is discussed briefly.

Constituents of the genus Oxylobus

The aerial parts of Oxylobus arbutifolius and O. adscendens gave eudesmanolides and labdane derivatives as well as two new euparin derivatives.     

Sesquiterpene lactones from Brachylaena species

The investigation of two Brachylaena species afforded in addition to known sesquiterpene lactones and other constituents five new lactones, a germacranolide, a guaianolide and three eudesmanolides. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods. The chemotaxonomy of this complex genus is discussed.     

Eudesmane derivatives and highly oxygenated monoterpenes from Iranian Artemisia species

The aerial parts ofArtemisia tournefortiana afforded three new eudesmanolides with a 12,6β-lactone ring and the corresponding acids which may be the precursors of the lactones. FromArtemisia aucheri six highly oxygenated geraniol derivatives were isolated. The structures were elucidated by high field NMR techniques.     

Seven germacranolides and four eudesmanolides from Tithonia rotundifolia

The aerial parts of Tithionia rotundifolia afforded, in addition to two known sesquiterpene lactones, eleven new ones, seven germacranolides and four eudesmanolides. The structures were determined by ¹H NMR spectroscopy.     

Highly oxygenated guaianolides from Bishopanthus soliceps

In addition to known compounds several highly oxygenated guaianolides and eudesmanolides, derived from 1β-hydroxyarbusculin A, were isolated from the aerial parts of Bishopanthus soliceps, a member of a new genus of the tribe Liabeae.     

Sesquiterpene lactones from Achillea micrantha

The aerial parts of Achillea micrantha afforded the eudesmanolides santamarin, reynosin, dihydrosantamarin, dihydroerynosin and the germacranolides artemorin, gallicin, dihydroparthenolide as well as a new one, dihydroparthenolide bisepoxide. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic data.     

Artegallin,a sesquiterpene lactone from Artemisia caerulescens subsp. gallica

Four eudesmanolides were isolated from Artemisia caerulescens subsp. gallica. The constitution and stereochemistry of the new eudesmanolide artegallin were determined on the basis of its spectroscopic properties and by transformation into β-santonin.     

Further eudesmanolides from Dimerostemma species

The aerial parts of a new Dimerostemma species afforded four eudesmanolides which are all derivatives of arbusculin B and an aldehyde, obviously a degradation product of syringenin. A reinvestigation of Dimerostemma asperatum gave a further dimerostemmolide.     

Four eudesmanolides from Montanoa frutescens

Chemical analysis of Montanoa frutescens afforded the known sesquiterpene lactones montafrusins A and B, as well as four new eudesmanolides which we have named montafrusins C, D, E and F. The structures of the new compounds were established by spectroscopic methods.     

Oxepine derivatives from the roots of Smyrnium rotundifolium

Besides the known eudesmanolides and oxepine derivatives we have isolated two new oxepine type sesquiterpene lactones from the roots of Smyrnium rotundifolium. The new compounds were smyrnicordi-8-enolide and isosmyrnicordiolide, its stereochemistry at C-8 and C-10 could not be established.     

Modified eudesmanolides and other sesquiterpene lactones from Wunderlichia mirabilis and Actinoseris polymorpha

Re-investigation of Wunderlichia mirabilis afforded three new modified eudesmanolides of the same type isolated previously from an Onoseris species, and minute amounts of a germacranolide for which a structure only could be proposed. Actinoseris polymorpha also contained a new germacranolide, the angetate of desacetyllaurenobiolide. Structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and by some chemical transformations. The significance of these findings is discussed briefly.     

Sesquiterpene lactones of Artemisia mexicana var. Angustifolia

Seven eudesmanolides were isolated and characterized from Artemisia mexicana var. angustifolia. These included arglanin, artemexifolin, ludalbin, santamarine and three new compounds named 8α-acetoxyarmexifolin, α-epoxyludalbin and armefolin. The structure of armexifolin is revised.
