The sub-tropical broadleaved forests dominates the foothills in Malakand division, Hindukush range mountains of northern Pakistan. Olea ferruginea is one of the major constituents of these forests having a wide distribution with no quantitative relationships between stand structural parameters and biomass carbon which renders to estimate carbon budget in the region. We investigated the forest structure, growing stock characteristics and biomass carbon stocks of the Olea ferruginea dominated forests in the foot-hills of Hindukush range mountains in Pakistan. The study highlights species diversity, tree distribution pattern and biomass carbon in respective diameter classes. We recognized five Olea ferruginea vegetation types by using an importance values (IV). Results showed that the forest comprised of 19 woody species belonging to 13 families of 10 Genera. Importance value (IV) for Olea ferruginea was ranged from 53 to 96 (mean = 69.4 ± 2.7) with a stem density of 215 to 417 ± 6.4 ha?1. Average basal area was 6.69 ± 1.3 m2 ha?1 and volume was 44.2 ± 9.8 m3 ha?1. Stem biomass and total biomass was 49.82 ± 11.1 and 100.1 ± 22.6 t ha?1 respectively whereas, the stored carbon in the living biomass was 49.54 ± 11.3 t ha?1. These findings revealed that Olea ferruginea forests has great potential to utilize and store atmospheric carbon. We concluded from our results, that the potential of carbon capturing and storage of the area can be increasesd on extensive managements of high biomass carbon density through proper scientific methods.  相似文献

Trienoic fatty acids are major components of chloroplast membranes and are also precursors of the oxylipins, such as methyl jasmonate, that play important roles in signal transduction pathways relating to plant development and responses to stress. A cDNA encoding a plastidial ω-3 fatty acid desaturase responsible for trienoic formation has been isolated from a library made from ripening fruits of Olea europaea L. The predicted protein contains 436 amino acid residues including a consensus chloroplast specific transit peptide. Alignment with other desaturase sequences showed strong homology with the plastidial ω-3 desaturases fad7 and fad8. Since fad8 is only expressed at low temperatures and the olive fruit were developing at > 20 °C, it is concluded that the isolated cDNA is most likely to be derived from fad7. Northern hybridisation showed a transient expression of the putative fad7 gene at early stages of drupe (5–7 WAF) and mesocarp (16–19 WAF) development. In situ hybridisation showed particularly prominent expression in the palisade and vascular tissue of young leaves, the embryo sac and transmitting tissue of the carpel, and the tapetum, pollen grains and vascular tissue of anthers. The distinctive spatial, temporal and environmental regulation of the putative fad7 gene is consistent with major roles, not only in thylakoid membrane formation, but also in the provision of α-linolenate-derived signalling molecules that are particularly important in plant tissues involved in transportation and reproduction.  相似文献

Seasonal changes of starch and soluble carbohydrates in leaves, bark and xylem tissues of olive tree were examined during acomplete annual cycle. Leaf starch and soluble carbohydrateswere detected at high levels during the spring and autumn metabolicallyactive periods. The low level of leaf starch in combinationwith the drastic reduction of soluble carbohydrates and mannitol, defined the summer period of the low metabolic state of thetree. The low leaf starch level in conjunction with the risensoluble carbohydrate levels in leaves in winter were associatedwith cold acclimation processes. The bark and xylem tissueswere performing as starch deposition sites, and differencesin the extent of starch accumulation in these tissues were detectedduring the seasons. The starch fluctuations in bark and xylemwere discussed in relation to the translocation of metabolitesand other physiological processes. Mannitol, the most abundantleaf carbohydrate, was examined in relation to the reducingsugars exported to the bark. The bark mannitol was examinedin conjunction with the sucrose, glucose and starch levels inthe maturing bark tissues and was correlated to the low wintertemperatures. During the winter there was a drastic reductionof mannitol circulation from the bark to xylem. Olive tree, Olea europaea, L, carbohydrates  相似文献

From the methanol extract of boron deficient Olea europaea leaves, two secoiridoid glycosides, not detected in leaf extracts of untreated plants, 6′-E-p-coumaroyl-secologanoside and 6′-O-[(2E)-2,6-dimethyl-8-hydroxy-2-octenoyloxy]-secologanoside, were isolated together with three known secoiridoid glycosides, oleuropein, oleoside dimethyl ester, and secologanoside. The structures of the isolated compounds were established by means of NMR and MS spectral analyses. The above novel secoiridoids were synthesized by the plant as a physiological response to nutrient stress.  相似文献

Microbially unexplored medicinal plants can have a genetically diverse microbial population with multi-functional plant growth promoting traits. In this aspect, 75 endophytic bacterial isolates with plant growth promoting traits were isolated from Withania coagulans Dunal and Olea ferruginea Royal. Many of these bacteria were able to solubilize phosphate, produce indole-3-acetic acid, ammonia as well as hydrogen cyanide, synthesize extracellular enzymes and show antagonistic activities against plant pathogenic fungi under in vitro conditions. These isolates were also characterized by morphological and biochemical analysis. Furthermore, four representative isolates with pronounced plant growth promoting activities were identified as Enterobacter cloacae, Enterobacter dissolvens, Enterobacter hormaechei and Cronobacter sakazakii by 16S rDNA sequencing analysis. This work for the first time, reported the isolation of endophytic bacteria, the novel association form selected plants, Withania coagulans and Olea ferruginea. The explored endophytes might have great potential in the field of biocontrol and plant growth promoting for sustainable agricultural practices.  相似文献

The effect of changes in Ca2+/Na+ ratios at the root zone has been reported in Olea europaea, a species mostly cultivated in calcareous soils. Plants were exposed to low (2.0 mM, low-Ca) or high-Ca2+ supply (9.0 mM, high-Ca) and supplied with 0 or 200 mM NaCl. Measurements were performed on water relations, gas exchange and photosynthetic performances, ion fluxes at whole-plant and leaf level, Na+ allocation at organismal level, the elemental and soluble carbohydrate concentration in the leaf. Most parameters were also measured during a period of relief from salinity stress, as Olea europaea suffers from fluctuating root zone NaCl concentrations over the whole growing season. High-Ca2+ supply decreased stomatal conductance, especially during the first two weeks of treatment. In response to salinity stress (i) leaf turgor potential was more severely depressed in high-Ca than in low-Ca plants, whereas net CO2 assimilation rate and relative growth rate were unaffected by root zone Ca2+ concentrations (ii) high-Ca plants had a markedly superior ability to both exclude Na+ from the shoot and to selectively transport K+ over Na+ than low-Ca plants; (iii) both CO2 carboxylation efficiency and maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm) were significantly smaller in low-Ca than in high-Ca plants, likely as a result of a greater accumulation of toxic ions. Consistently, when osmotic stress was relieved by supplying plants with good quality water (relief period), both photosynthetic (+44%) and growth rates (+65%) recovered to a markedly superior degree in high-Ca than in low-Ca plants which had been previously treated with 200 mM NaCl. We conclude that (1) high-Ca2+ supply expose olive leaves to a more severe dehydration, but allowed to restrict both the entry and the allocation of potentially toxic ions to sensitive shoot organs; (2) a transient restriction of water-mass flow to the shoot during salinization may be of relatively minor significance in Olea europaea, which is very tolerant to drought; (3) overall salt tolerance in Olea europaea, as in most evergreen sclerophylls inhabiting Mediterranean areas, tightly depends upon the ability to reduce water uptake and transpiration during the dry/warm period and to recover photosynthetic and growth rates when low-salinity flood water is available. Therefore, data from the present experiment allow conclude that an increase in root zone Ca2+ concentration enhances tolerance to salinity stress in olive plants.  相似文献

Polymorphism in the lengths of restriction fragments of the whole cpDNA molecule were studied in 15 taxa (species or subspecies) of the genus Olea. From restriction analysis using nine endonucleases, 28 site mutations and five length polymorphisms were identified, corresponding to 12 distinct chlorotypes. From a phenetic analysis based on a Nei’s dissimilarity matrix and a Dollo parsimony cladistic analysis using, as an outgroup, a species of the genus Phillyrea close to Olea, the ten taxa of section Olea were distinguished clearly from the five taxa of section Ligustroides which appear to posses more ancestral cpDNA variants. Within the section Ligustroides, the tropical species from central-western Africa, Olea hochtetteri, showed a chlorotype which differed substantially from those of the other four Olea taxa growing in southern Africa, supporting a previous assessment according to which O. hochtetteri may have been subjected to a long period of geographical isolation from the other Olea taxa. Within the Olea section, three phyla were identified corresponding to South and East Africa taxa, Asiatic taxa, and a group including Saharan, Macaronesian and Mediteranean taxa, respectively. On the basis of cpDNA variation, the closest Olea taxa to the single Mediterranean species, Olea europaea, represented by its very predominant chlorotype, observed in both wild and cultivated olive, were found to be Olea laperrinei (from the Sahara), Olea maroccana (from Maroccan High Atlas) and Olea cerasiformis (from Macaronesia). These three taxa, which all share the same chlorotype, may have a common maternal origin. Received: 5 December 1999 / Accepted: 30 December 1999  相似文献

Asimilobine, anonaine, noreorydine, nornantenine, (+)-reticuline and the new alkaloid, 4-hydroxyanonaine, were isolated from Laurelia philippiana bark. The biogenetically related obovanine, oxoputerine and (?)-romneine, not known as a natural product, were obtained from the bark of L. novae-zelandiae. The occurrence of (R)-norlaudanosoline-derived alkaloids in L. novae-zelandiae is a distinctive feature of this tree. Neither L. novae-zelandiae nor L. philippiana accumulate dimeric benzylisoquinoline alkaloids to any appreciable extent in the trunk bark, differing in this respect from L. sempervirens, the only other Laurelia species.  相似文献

The effect of Olea oleaster and Juniperus procera leaves extracts and their combination on thioacetamide (TAA)-induced hepatic cirrhosis were investigated in male albino mice. One hundred sixty mice were used in this study and were randomly distributed into eight groups of 20 each. Mice of group 1 served as controls. Mice of group 2 were treated with TAA. Mice of group 3 were exposed to TAA and supplemented with O. oleaster leaves extracts. Mice of group 4 were treated with TAA and supplemented with J. procera leaves extracts. Mice of group 5 were subjected to TAA and supplemented with O. oleaster and J. procera leaves extracts. Mice of groups 6, 7 and 8 were supplemented with O. oleaster, J. procera, and O. oleaster and J. procera leaves extracts respectively. Administration of TAA for six and twelve weeks resulted in a decline in body weight gain and increased the levels of serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and total bilirubin. Histopathological evaluations of hepatic sections from mice treated with TAA showed severe alterations including increase of fibrogenesis processes with structural damage. Treatment of mice with these extracts showed a pronounced attenuation in TAA induced hepatic cirrhosis associated with physiological and histopathological alterations. Finally, this study suggests that the supplementation of these extracts may act as antioxidant agents and could be an excellent adjuvant support in the therapy of hepatic cirrhosis.  相似文献

Studies were undertaken with one olive (Olea europaea L.) cultivar to identify buds with microspores competent to embryogenesis in vitro. Isolated microspore cultures were performed for the induction of gametic embryogenesis. Different pollen development stages and stress conditions (heat or cold shock) were evaluated. The correlation of inflorescence, anther morphology and the suitable stage of microspore development were analysed. The morphology of responsive buds was identified which corresponded with microspores from the late uni-nucleate to early bi-nucleate pollen stages. Symmetrical divisions of microspores as well as resulting multinucleate structures and pro-embryos were observed. In this paper, a new method of isolated microspore culture that leads to cell division and pro-embryos in olive, is reported.  相似文献

Direct addition of the bark of Saccoglottis gabonensis to fresh palm juice followed by microbial enumeration every 6 hr showed that the bark inhibited bacterial growth appreciably. The effect of various extracts of the bark on two bacterial species isolated from palm wine (Leuconostoc mesenteroides and Lactobacillus plantarum) was studied by using the paper disc method. It was observed that three of the five constituents of the bark showed inhibitory effect on the bacteria.  相似文献
