The effects of ethephon on stomatal resistance, water potential, osmotic potential, turgor potential, and ethylene production were determined on leaves of a drought-resistant (KS 65) and a drought-sensitive (IA 25) genotype of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] grown under wellwatered or drought-stressed conditions. With both sufficient and limited water supply, ethephon had no effect on the adaxial, abaxial, or total stomatal resistance of either genotype. For both water treatments, the adaxial stomatal resistance of the drought-sensitive genotype was higher than that of the drought-resistant genotype. Ethephon increased the amount of ethylene produced by the plants under both levels of water. For plants with sufficient water, water potentials of both genotypes were lowered by ethephon. Ethephon had no effect on the water potentials under drought or on the osmotic potentials under either water regime. With drought, the turgor potential of the drought-sensitive genotype, but not that of the drought-resistant, was increased by ethephon.  相似文献

Water and osmotic potentials were measured in leaves of a drought-sensitive ('Ponca') and a drought-resistant ('KanKing') cultivar of winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L . em. Thell.) to determine if the potentials of the drought-sensitive cultivar could be made similar to those of the drought-resistant cultivar through application of abscisic acid (ABA). Stomatal resistance was also measured. Plants were sprayed with ABA and grown in soil, which was watered or allowed to dry. In well-watered plants, ABA closed the stomata of both cultivars. Stomatal resistance of plants grown without added water and with ABA was less than that of plants grown without added water and without ABA. Under ample water supply, ABA decreased water and osmotic potentials of the drought-sensitive cultivar (Ponca), but had no effect on these potentials in the drought-resistant cultivar (KanKing). Under water-deprived conditions, ABA increased water and osmotic potentials of Ponca, but did not change these potentials in KanKing. The overall effect of ABA was to decrease the differences in the water and osmotic potentials between the two cultivars.  相似文献

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) plants were grown in solution culture and stressed at three rates of decreasing leaf water potential (−0.123, −0.068 and −0.029 MPa day−1) achieved by the incremental addition of an osmoticum, polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000 to the solutions. Plants were also grown in soil and given different amounts of water which resulted in rates of decreasing leaf water potentials of −0.130 and −0.073 MPa day−1. The rate of stress and the culture system influenced the accumulation of solutes in the cell, but not cell volume. A rapid stress (−0.123 and −0.130 MPa day−1) to approximately −1.6 MPa leaf water potential resulted in 0.75 and 0.16 MPa of osmotic adjustment in the PEG and soil culture respectively. At moderate stress (−0.068 and −0.073 MPa day−1) respective values were 1.68 and 0.58 MPa. There were some visual symptoms in the solution grown plants characteristic of uptake of high molecular weight PEG. However the relative growth rates of these plants were equal to or greater than those of the soil grown plants. In view of the differences in plant water status of soil and PEG solution cultured plants it was concluded that the use of the latter system would not be entirely suitable for some studies of drought resistance in sorghum, as related to crop performance in the field.  相似文献

Leaf water characteristics and drought acclimation in sunflower genotypes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

The responses of leaf water parameters to drought were examined using three sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) genotypes. Osmotic potential at full water saturation (π100), apoplastic water fraction (AWF) and bulk elastic modulus (BEM) were determined by pressure-volume curve analysis on well watered or on water-stressed plants (−1.0 MPa Ψ1 < −1.5 MPa) previously drought-pretreated or not. The drought-pretreated plants were subjected to a 7-day drought period (predawn leaf water potential reached −0.9 MPa) followed by 8 days of rewatering. In well watered plants, all genotypes in response to drought acclimation displayed a significantly decreased π100 associated with a decrease in the leaf water potential at the turgor-loss point (decrease in Ψtlp was between 0.15 and 0.21 MPa, depending on the genotype). In two genotypes, drought acclimation affected the partitioning of water between the apoplastic and symplastic fractions without any effect on the total amount of water in the leaves. As a third genotype displayed no modification of AWF and BEM after drought acclimation, the decreased π100 was only due to the net accumulation of solutes and was consistent with the adjustment of the photochemical efficiency observed previously in this genotype in response to drought acclimation. In water-stressed plants, the osmotic adjustment (OA) can increase further beyond that observed in response to the drought pretreatment. However, the maintenance of photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance at low leaf water potentials not only depends on the extent of osmotic adjustment, but also on the interaction between OA and AWF or BEM. Adaptative responses of leaf water parameters to drought are thus quite contrasted in sunflower genotypes. Poor crop stand is a common problem in saline areas. Germination and seedling emergence may be depressed as a result of impeded aeration, saline or dry conditions. In this study, we examined the effects of salinity and moisture stress and their interactions on seed germination and seedling growth of carrots. Variable soil matric and osmotic potentials were either obtained by equilibrating soil salinized to different degrees on a 0.5 MPa ceramic plate soil moisture extractor or by adding different amounts of salt solutions to the same mass of air-dried soil, based on a previously determined soil moisture release curve, and allowing to equilibrate for 1 week. Germination decreased significantly in the investigated silty soil (Aquic Ustifluvent) at soil moisture potentials higher than −0.01 MPa, whereas osmotic potentials as low as −0.5 MPa did not influence germination. Matric potentials of −0.3 and −0.4 MPa, respectively, resulted in a strong decrease (35–95%) of germination and delayed germination by 2 to 5 days in the silty soil to which different amounts (18 and 36%, respectively) and sizes (0.8–1.2 mm and 1.5–2.2 mm, respectively) of sand particles had been added. No effect of sand and grain diameter was detected. Germination was not affected by comparable osmotic potentials. Seedling growth showed a much higher sensitivity than germination to decreasing matric potentials, but was not affected by osmotic potentials ranging from −0.05 to −0.5 MPa. Optimum shoot growth occurred at matric potentials between −0.025 and −0.1 MPa. Shoot and root growth decreased markedly at matric potentials higher than −0.01 MPa. Fresh weight of shoots decreased gradually at matric potentials lower than −0.2 MPa. Root growth was significantly increased at matric potentials of −0.1 to −0.3 MPa, whereas comparable osmotic potentials did not have equivalent effects. It is concluded that germination and seedling growth are differently affected by comparable matric and osmotic stresses and that water stress exerts a more negative effect than salt stress.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine soil and plant resistance to water flow in faba bean under field conditions during the growing season. During each sampling period transpiration flux and leaf water potential measured hourly were used with daily measurements of root and soil water potential to calculate total resistance using Ohm's law analogy. Plant growth, root density and soil water content distributions with depth were measured. Leaf area and root length per plant reached their maximum value during flowering and pod setting (0.31 m2 and 2200 m, respectively), then decreasing until the end of the growing period. Root distribution decreased with depth ranging, on average, between 34.2% (in the 0–0.25 m soil layer) and 18.1% (in the 0.75–1.0 m soil layer). Mean root diameter was 0.6 mm but most of the roots were less than 0.7 mm in diameter. Changes in plant and soil water potentials reflected plant growth characteristics and climatic patterns. The overall relationship between the difference in water potential between soil and leaf and transpiration was linear, with the slope equal to average plant resistance (0.0165 MPa/(cm3 m-1 h-1 10-3). Different regression parameters were obtained for the various measurement days. The water potential difference was inversely related to transpiration at high leaf stomatal resistance and at high values of VPD. Total resistance decreased with transpiration flux in a linear relationship (r=−0.68). Different slope values were obtained for the different measurement days. Estimated soil resistance was much lower than the observed total resistance to water flow. The change from vegetative growth to pod filling was accompanied by an increase in plant resistance. The experimental results support previous findings that resistance to water flow through plants is not constant but is influenced by plant age, growth stage and environmental conditions. A more complex model than Ohm's law analogy may be necessary for describing the dynamic flow system under field conditions. Concurrent measurements of abaxial and adaxial stomatal resistance and leaf-water potentials of snap beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in the field and growth chamber show that the stomata on the 2 surfaces of the leaflet react differently to water deficit. The stomata on the abaxial surface, which are about 7 times more numerous than on the adaxial surface, are not significantly affected at leaf-water potentials greater than —11 bars, but with further decrease in leaf-water potential, the resistance rapidly increases. On the other hand, the resistance of the adaxial stomata increases sharply at a leaf-water potential of about —8 bars and is constant at higher water potentials. The average stomatal resistance for both surfaces of the leaf, which is the major diffusive resistance to water vapor, to a first approximation acts as an on-off switch and helps prevent further decline in leaf-water potential. The relation between the leaf-water potential and the stomatal resistance links the soil-water potential to the transpiration stream as needed for soil-plant-atmosphere models.  相似文献

This article reports on quantified soil water gains and their possible effects on summer water relationships in a semiarid Stipa tenacissima L. grasslands located in SE Spain. We believe that the net soil water gains detected using minilysimeters could be from soil water vapour adsorption (WVA). Our study of high water-stress showed stomatal conductance (21.8–43.1 mmol H2O m−2 s−1) in S. tenacissima leaves unusual for the summer season, and the evapotranspiration from S. tenacissima grassland, estimated by a multi-source sparse evapotranspiration model, closely corresponding to total WVA. This highlights the importance of summer soil WVA to stomatal conductance and vital transpiration in S. tenacissima. This study measured pre-dawn leaf water potential (ψ) response to sporadic light rainfall, finding that a light summer rainfall (1.59 mm day−1) was sufficient to vary ψ in S. tenacissima from −3.8 (close to the turgour loss point) to −2.7 MPa. We hypothesize that soil WVA can supply vegetation with water vital to its survival in seasons with a severe water deficit, giving rise to a close relationship between soil water dynamics and plant water response.  相似文献

Potassium deficient (−K) and potassium sufficient (+K) plants were exposed to four days of water stress. Well watered −K and +K plants had comparable rates of transpiration. But +K plants had a larger leaf area and depleted the soil moisture to a greater extent on day 1 of stress. For days 2 and 3 their transpiration rate, leaf water potential and relative water content fell below those of −K plants. Well watered −K plants had a significantly lower rate of photosynthesis than +K plants. Photosynthesis of −K plants was more sensitive to reduction in plant water potential than that of +K plants. Reduction of photosythesis in −K leaves was due to impairment of photosynthetic capacity and not to stomatal closure. Growth was significantly reduced in −K plants.  相似文献

Seasonal Changes in the Cytokinin Content of Ginkgo biloba Leaves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Young growth-chamber-grown cotton plants were subjected to a series of eight periods of soil water stress, which served as a preconditioning treatment. After preconditioning, water was withheld and changes in the stomatal resistance and leaf water potential were determined and compared with similar well watered control plants. The stomatal response of stress preconditioned plants adjusted such that the diffusion resistance of the lower surface of the leaf did not reach a value greater than 20 s cm?1 until the leaf water potential dropped 14 bars below that required to reach the same resistance on previously unstressed plants. The resistance—leaf water potential relation for the adaxial surface was unaltered by the preconditioning treatment. Adjustment of the osmotic potential of the guard cells on the abaxial surface provides at least a partial explanation of this change in response. The lack of adjustment of stomatal response on the adaxial surface of the leaves was correlated with a lack of adjustment in osmotic potential of guard cells on that surface.  相似文献

Seasonal leaf water relations characteristics were studied in fully irrigated spring barley (Hordeum distichum L. cv. Gunnar) fertilized at low (50 kg K ha−1) or high (200 kg K ha−1) levels of potassium applied as KCl. The investigation was undertaken from about 14 days before anthesis until the milk ripe stage in leaves of different position and age. Additionally, the effects of severe water stress on leaf water relations were studied in the middle of the grain filling period in spring barley (cv. Alis). The leaf water relations characteristics were determined by the pressure volume (PV) technique. Water relations of fully irrigated plants were compared in leaf No 7 with the water relations of slowly droughted plants (cv. Alis). Leaf osmotic potential at full turgor (ψ π 100 ) decreased 0.1 to 0.3 MPa in droughted leaves indicating a limited osmotic adjustment due to solute accumulation. The leaf osmotic potential at zero turgor (ψ π 0 ) was about −2.2 MPa in fully irrigated plants and −2.6 MPa in droughted plants. The relative water content at zero turgor (R0) decreased 0.1 unit in severely droughted leaves. The ratio of turgid leaf weight to dry weight (TW/DW) tended to be increased by drought. The tissue modulus of elasticity (ε) decreased in droughted plants and together with osmotic adjustment mediated turgor maintenance during drought. A similar response to drought was found in low and high K plants except that the R0 and ε values tended to be higher in the high K plants. Conclusively, during drought limited osmotic adjustment and increase in elasticity of the leaf tissue mediated turgor maintenance. These effects were only slightly modified by high potassium application. The seasonal analysis in fully irrigated plants (cv. Gunnar) showed that within about 14 days from leaf emergence ψ π 100 decreased from about −0.9 to −1.6 MPa in leaf No 7 (counting the first leaf to emerge as number one) and from about −1.1 to −1.9 MPa in leaf No 8 (the flag leaf) due to solute accumulation. A similar decrease took place in ψ π 0 except that the level of ψ π 0 was displaced to a lower level of about 0.2 to 0.3 MPa. Both ψ π 100 and ψ π 0 tended to be 0.05 to 0.10 MPa lower in high K than in low K plants. R0 was about 0.8 to 0.9 and was independent of leaf position and age, but tended to be highest in high K plants. The TW/DW ratio decreased from about 5.5 in leaf No 6 to 4.5 in leaf No 7 and 3.8 in leaf No 8. The TW/DW ratio was 4 to 10% higher in high K than in low K plants indicating larger leaf cell size in the former. The apoplastic water content (Va) at full turgor constituted about 15% in leaf No 7. ε was maximum at full turgor and varied from about 11 to 34 MPa. ε tended to be higher in high K plants. Conclusively, in fully watered plants an ontogenetically determined accumulation of solutes (probably organic as discussed) occurred in the leaves independent of K application. The main effect of high K application on water relations was an increase in leaf water content and a slight decrease in leaf ψπ. The effect of K status on growth and drought resistance is discussed.  相似文献

Adaptations of species to capture limiting resources is central for understanding structure and function of ecosystems. We studied the water economy of nine woody species differing in rooting depth in a Patagonian shrub steppe from southern Argentina to understand how soil water availability and rooting depth determine their hydraulic architecture. Soil water content and potentials, leaf water potentials (ΨLeaf), hydraulic conductivity, wood density (ρw), rooting depth, and specific leaf area (SLA) were measured during two summers. Water potentials in the upper soil layers during a summer drought ranged from −2.3 to −3.6 MPa, increasing to −0.05 MPa below 150 cm. Predawn ΨLeaf was used as a surrogate of weighted mean soil water potential because no statistical differences in ΨLeaf were observed between exposed and covered leaves. Species-specific differences in predawn ΨLeaf were consistent with rooting depths. Predawn ΨLeaf ranged from −4.0 MPa for shallow rooted shrubs to −1.0 MPa for deep-rooted shrubs, suggesting that the roots of the latter have access to abundant moisture, whereas shallow-rooted shrubs are adapted to use water deposited mainly by small rainfall events. Wood density was a good predictor of hydraulic conductivity and SLA. Overall, we found that shallow rooted species had efficient water transport in terms of high specific and leaf specific hydraulic conductivity, low ρw, high SLA and a low minimum ΨLeaf that exhibited strong seasonal changes, whereas deeply rooted shrubs maintained similar minimum ΨLeaf throughout the year, had stems with high ρw and low hydraulic conductivity and leaves with low SLA. These two hydraulic syndromes were the extremes of a continuum with several species occupying different portions of a gradient in hydraulic characteristics. It appears that the marginal cost of having an extensive root system (e.g., high ρw and root hydraulic resistance) contributes to low growth rates of the deeply rooted species.  相似文献

Low soil water potential and low or high root temperatures are important stresses affecting carbon allocation in plants. This study examines the effects of these stresses on carbon allocation from the perspective of whole plant mass balance. Sixteen-day old spring wheat seedlings were placed in a growth room under precisely controlled root temperatures and soil water potentials. Five soil water potential treatments, from −0.03 MPa to −0.25 MPa, and six root temperature treatments, from 12 to 32°C were used. A mathematical model based on mass balance considerations was used, in combination with experimental measurements of rate of net photosynthesis, leaf area, and shoot/root dry masses to determine photosynthate allocation between shoot and root. Partitioning of photosynthates to roots was the lowest at 22–27°C root temperature regardless soil water potential, and increased at both lower and higher root temperatures. Partitioning of photosynthates to the roots increased with decreasing soil water potential. Under the most favourable conditions, i.e. at −0.03 MPa soil water potential and 27°C root temperature, the largest fraction, 57%, of photosynthates was allocated to the shoots. Under the most stressed conditions, i.e. at −0.25 MPa soil water potential and 32°C root temperature, the largest fraction, more than 80%, of photosynthates was allocated to roots.  相似文献

A simple, physiologically based model was devised and used for estimating the respiration rate and the overall conversion efficiency of photosynthate into the grain dry-matter in dehydrated plants relative to well watered controls. The model described mathematically the partitioning of assimilate produced by current photosynthesis and of assimilate stored previously between the grain and those plants parts other than grain (the “straw”). Using data obtained from the dry-matter analysis and CO2 gas exchange measurements, the model gave us two independent estimates of the respiration rate and the overall conversion efficiency; one for the plants given a prolonged dark period and the other for those grown in a normal light and dark cycle. The rate of dark respiration increased with mild water stress: 4.3 mg g−1 day−1 in control plants with leaf water potential of around −0.4 MPa and 11.3 mg g−1 day−1 in dehydrated plants with leaf water potential of around −1 MPa, when both the control and dehydrated plants were left in the dark for ten days. Similar values were obtained for plants in a normal light and dark cycle: 5.6 in well watered and 8.1 mg g−1 day−1 in the stressed plants. Accordingly, the overall conversion efficiency (the ratio of grain dry-matter against the gross carbohydrate input to the construction and maintenance processes) was 0.7 to 0.8 for the well hydrated control and 0.4 to 0.5 for moderately dehydrated plants. With increasing water deficits, however, the respiration rate decreased: 4.8 mg g−1 day−1 when plants were severely stressed (below −3 MPa in midday leaf water potential). The decrease in straw dry weight alone overestimates dry-matter partition of the stored assimilate in the straw into grain by 20 to 30% in well watered plants and the error increases to 50 to 60% in more dehydrated plants.  相似文献

Leaves of drought-resistant and drought-sensitive genotypes of maize (Zea mays L.) were sprayed with ethephon to determine its effect on water and osmotic potentials. With both sufficient and limited water supplies, ethephon decreased the water potential, but not the osmotic potential, of the drought-sensitive maize. It had no effect on the water and osmotic potentials of the drought-resistant maize under either water regime. The results showed that the response of a genotype of maize to ethephon depends upon its susceptibility to drought.

Recent research has shown that many C3 plant species have significant stomatal opening and transpire water at night even in desert habitats. Day-time stomatal regulation is expected to maximize carbon gain and prevent runaway cavitation, but little is known about the effect of soil resource availability on night-time stomatal conductance (g) and transpiration (E). Water (low and high) and nutrients (low and high) were applied factorially during the growing season to naturally occurring seedlings of the annual Helianthus anomalus. Plant height and biomass were greatest in the treatment where both water and nutrients were added, confirming resource limitations in this habitat. Plants from all treatments showed significant night-time g (~0.07 mol m−2 s−1) and E (~1.5 mol m−2 s−1). In July, water and nutrient additions had few effects on day- or night-time gas exchange. In August, however, plants in the nutrient addition treatments had lower day-time photosynthesis, g and E, paralleled by lower night-time g and E. Lower predawn water potentials and higher integrated photosynthetic water-use efficiency suggests that the nutrient addition indirectly induced a mild water stress. Thus, soil resources can affect night-time g and E in a manner parallel to day-time, although additional factors may also be involved.  相似文献

Based upon two different research studies in the mediterranean regions of France and Turkey, drought resistance strategies were investigated in a broad group of species. The diurnal and seasonal patterns of the water relations of different lifeforms from the thermo-mediterranean to submediterranean lifezones were compared. Three sites near Montpellier, in Southern France, and five sites near Antalya, Turkey were used for this comparison. Xylem pressure potential and relative stomatal aperture were the key water relations parameters collected in France while these parameters as well as osmotic potential and leaf conductance were studied in Turkey. From the 26 different study species investigated in France, 7 distinct types of stomatal control were observed, with the deciduous lifeforms showing the least control, the sclerophyllous and coniferous evergreens the greatest control and the malacophyllous shrublets intermediate levels of control. Predawn water potential values provided a means of classifying species according to their temporal and spatial utilization of site water reserves. The comparison of turgor potentials (difference between water and osmotic potentials) gave an insight into leaf adaptations to site moisture. Species with high predawn water potentials generally maintain positive turgor even at midday during the summer, whereas species with low predawn values were frequently at zero turgor even at predawn. Phlomis grandiflora was the most extreme species with mid-summer predawns and midday water potentials of –6 MPa and osmotic potentials never more negative than –2.4 MPa.  相似文献

Maize plants of CPB2 and CPB8 hybrids were kept under water deficit for 22 d. In the CPB8 hybrid, leaf rolling initiated at the 9th d of water deficit period, while in CPB2 hybrid it was at the 15th d. Both hybrids showed leaf rolling initiation at the same leaf water potential, ΨW of -0.480±0.095 MPa. At leaf rolling initiation, the leaf osmotic potential, ΨS was -0.730±0.085 MPa in CPB8 and 0.630±0.110 MPa in CPB2. The leaf temperature and stomatal conductance were higher in CPB8 than in CPB2. Values of leaf ΨW, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase activity, chlorophyll content, and specific leaf area were similar in both hybrids. Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase activity and protein content were lower in the CPB2 hybrid than in CPB8. In both hybrids leaf rolling initiation was associated with: (1) higher leaf temperature, with leaf rolling effect related to leaf temperature reduction, and (2) lower leaf ΨS, related to osmotic adjustment as an additional component of drought-tolerance strategy.
