The dampwood termite genus ZootermopsisEmerson contains three recognized species with four distinct and consistent hydrocarbon phenotypes. Agonistic behaviors among nonreproductive insects from colonies of the same and different hydrocarbon phenotypes were observed in the laboratory. Various combinations of soldier versus nymphs, pseudergate versus pseudergate, and soldier versus soldier encounters were used in experimental trials. Soldiers or pseudergates seldom attack individuals of the same hydrocarbon phenotype. Z. angusticollis(Hagen) (phenotype II) is typically aggressive toward phenotype III of Z. nevadensis(Hagen) but not always aggressive against phenotype I of Z. nevadensis. The variation in response is dependent on which castes are placed in the bioassay arena: soldier versus soldier bouts result in consistent aggression, while pseudergate versus pseudergate or soldier versus nymphs contacts do not. Both pseudergates and soldiers of Z. laticeps(Banks) (phenotype IV) respond agonistically toward the other three phenotypes: Z. angusticollis (II) and Z. nevadensis(I and III). Although hydrocarbon phenotypes I and III, both Z. nevadensis, are morphologically indistinguishable, agonistic behavioral responses between phenotype I and phenotype III are not equivalent to I versus I or III versus III behavioral responses. The I versus III engagements, regardless of the castes involved, display a greater proportion of avoidance and aggressive responses than I or III intraphenotype encounters. We interpret the lack of avoidance or aggressive behavior within each of the two phenotypes of Z. nevadensisand the significant avoidance and aggressive behavior between phenotypes as definite evidence of discrimination between disparate hydrocarbon phenotypes. These agonistic bioassays along with data on distinct hydrocarbon patterns and geographic distributions serve as the basis for creating two subspecies of Z. nevadensis: Z. n. nevadensis(Hagen) and Z. n. nuttingiHaverty and Thorne, ssp. nov.

We studied the post-flight behavior and sex attraction in imagoes of the termite Prorhinotermes simplex (Rhinotermitidae, Prorhinotermitinae). Pairing is mediated by the secretion from tergal glands, exposed by females in a calling
posture and highly attractive to males. Analysis of extracts of these glands by means of gas chromatography with electroantennographic
detection indicated a chromatographic area corresponding to an intense physiological response of males. The retention characteristics
of this area proved to be identical with those of (3Z,6Z,8E)-dodeca-3,6,8-trien-1-ol. Electroantennographic and behavioral assays revealed that units of picograms of the compound represent
a stimulus qualitatively and quantitatively equivalent to one female tergal gland. Thus, we hypothesize that (3Z,6Z,8E)-dodeca-3,6,8-trien-1-ol is a major component of the female sex pheromone in P. simplex.

Summary Termite mound densities in typical guinea savanna, Detarium, and grassland (boval) habitats in northern guinea savanna were determined by random quadratting of 2–3 sites in each habitat (100, 10x10 m quadrats per habitat). Dominant species in guinea savanna were T. geminatus (46 mounds ha-1) and T. oeconomus (21 mounds ha-1), in Detarium T. geminatus (59 mounds ha-1) and C. curtatus (45 mounds ha-1) and in boval C. curtatus (72 mounds ha-1) and T. geminatus (22 mounds ha-1). Only C. curtatus densities and total densities differed significantly between sites within habitats, but all species differed significantly in abundance between habitats. The composition of each community was related to general environment but no particular environmental variable was shown to be a major determinant of termite distribution. Evidence for the limitation of termite populations was obtained from indirect evidence of competition between colonies in Detarium, and by experimental manipulation of fire regimes in the typical guinea savanna habitat. Harvester termites increased four-five fold over two years in fire-protected plots as a result of increased food supplies. Total termite densities in the fire-protected community equilibrated to the new population density (100 mounds ha-1) after only two-three years.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of2,6-dichlorophenol (2,6-DCP) as sex pheromone of Anocentornitens. Sex pheromones were extracted by submerging 150 females fed for 6 days in hexane (3 ml) for two hours and sonicating them
for15 min. The extract was analyzed by GC-MS employing the Single Ion Monitoring (SIM) method. Identification of 2,6-DCP was
based on the comparison of mass spectra with a computer search using the NIST library and by matching the mass spectrum of
the peak at the retention time of 2,6-DCP from extract sand the synthetic product. In an olfactometer, males were released
at 2.5cm from females, control rubber septa and impregnated rubber septa with increasing concentrations of 2,6-DCP (50, 500
and 5000 ng). A higher percentage of orientation and higher frequencies of angles between 0° and 10° were observed for males
tested with females than with controls. Attraction of males to dummies impregnated with 2,6-DCP was observed with highest
response (100%) at 50 ng. There was a gradual decrease of responsiveness of males with increasing concentration of 2,6-DCP
(70 to 75%).This compound stimulated a behavior of mounting and ventral positioning ofA. nitens males at the lowest 2,6-DCP concentration where as dummies impregnated with 2,6-DCP higher than 50 ng concentration inhibited
these behaviors. Therefore, we can conclude that 2,6-DCP can elicit the complete behavior sequence of orientation, location,
mounting and ventral positioning behaviors and plays a role as an attractant and, as a mounting sex pheromone in A. nitens.

Ovipositor washings from virgin female Cryptophlebia batrachopa (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) were analysed by gas chromatography (GC) linked to electroantennography (EAG) and by high-resolution GC. The major EAG-active component in ovipositor washings was shown to be (Z)-8-dodecenyl acetate with less than 0.5% of the E isomer. GC analysis of ovipositor washings from C. leucotreta confirmed the presence of approximately equal amounts of (Z)- and (E)-8-dodecenyl acetates (Persoons et al., 1977). When pure (Z)-8-dodecenyl acetate and mixtures containing up to 50% of the E isomer were tested in the field in Malawi where both Cryptophlebia species occurred, C. batrachopa male moths were caught only in traps baited with 10% or less of the E isomer and highest catches were recorded for the pure Z isomer. By contrast C. leucotretra males were caught predominantly by traps baited with more than 10% E isomer and no catches were recorded for the pure Z isomer. (Z)-8-dodecenyl acetate containing 1% of the E isomer was found to attract male moths of Opogona spp.

(Z)-3-nonenol, (Z,Z)-3,6-nonadienol and (S,S)-(-)-epianastrephin proved active as male-produced pheromones which elicited behavioral responses from virgin female Mexican fruit flies (Anastrepha ludens) (Diptera: Tephritidae) in laboratory bioassays. All three chemicals elicited attraction and/or locomotor arrest when tested individually. When tested together, (Z)-3-nonenol inhibited the behavioral effect of (Z,Z)-3,6-nonadienol but either of the alcohols synergized the effect of (S,S)-(-)-epianastrephin. Quantities of the pheromones per male abdomen were: (Z)-3-nonenol-100 ng; (Z,Z)-3,6-nonadienol-40 ng; and total epianastrephin (R,R and S,S enantiomers)-700 ng. Relative to the quantities in abdominal extract, males released these chemicals during sexual display in a blend containing a higher proportion of the alcohols.

The aim of the research reported here was to determine whether 3-ethyl-4-methylpentanol, a minor but crucial component of
the sex pheromone of the North American slave-making ant species Polyergus breviceps, was also a component of the sex pheromone of the European congener Polyergus rufescens. Thus, the contents of mandibular glands of P. rufescens virgin queen were extracted and analysed. The main component of the extracts was methyl 6-methylsalicylate and 3-ethyl-4-methylpentanol
was identified as one of several minor components. Further analyses showed that the insects produce mainly the (R)-enantiomer of the alcohol. Males’ responses to various blends of methyl 6-methylsalicylate with the racemate or the pure
enantiomers of 3-ethyl-4- methylpentanol were tested in field behavioural bioassays. The data showed that blends of methyl
6- methylsalicylate and 3-ethyl-4-methylpentanol were strongly synergistic, with the most active ratios being biased toward
the first component. The addition of other minor components to the binary blend neither increased nor decreased responses
by males. Only the (R)-enantiomer of the alcohol was biologically active; its antipode did not inhibit attraction. The results are discussed in
terms of the evolution of signals, and are compared with the results previously obtained for the allopatric species Polyergus breviceps.
