Sexually mature Biomphalaria glabrata were exposed to 12 miracidia of Schistosoma mansoni, and egg production of snails was monitored over a period of 5 weeks. During the study period, exposed snails grew at approximately the same rate as unexposed controls. Castration, as measured by a reduction in the mean number of eggs laid per snail occurred between 14 and 21 days postexposure (PE). The reduction in fecundity in infected snails coincided with the migration and establishment of daughter sporocysts in the digestive gland and gonad. Enumeration of individual oocytes in longitudinal sections of the ovotestis revealed that uninfected snails contained significantly more oocytes per section than infected snails at 27, 31, and 40 days PE. In addition, the mean area of gonadal sections of control snails increased over the 40-day experimental period, whereas there was no such increase in gonadal area of infected snails. These data suggest that there is an inhibition in gonadal growth in infected snails. When oocyte data were expressed in terms of mean gonadal area, the mean number of oocytes per mm2 of gonad of uninfected and infected snails did not differ significantly over the study period, except at Day 14 PE, when infected snails contained a significantly greater number of oocytes per mm2 of gonad than did uninfected controls. It is hypothesized that daughter sporocysts of S. mansoni are primarily responsible for the inhibition of host reproductive activity, and may be mediating their effects through mechanisms involved in the regulation of gonadal growth.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Substrate-spawning Tilapia zillii failed to spawn in crowded holding tanks but exhibited a marked tendency to spawn soon after transfer to individually partitioned aquaria. Confined conditions suppressed the levels of serum 17 β -oestradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) in females, which remained low throughout the period of confinement. Levels of both steroids rose significantly following transfer of fish to individual aquaria and were maintained at consistently higher levels than those of fish which remained confined. Proportions of stage 3 (late perinucleolar) oocytes were significantly lower ( P <0.001) in individual fish 21–30 days after transfer, coincident with significantly higher ( P <0.01) proportions of stage 6 or 7 oocytes (late vitellogenic or maturing oocytes). However, no significant differences ( P ≥0.05) were detected between individual or confined groups of fish in the relative proportions of stage 2 (early perinucleolar), stage 4 (cortical alveolar) or stage 5 (early vitellogenic) oocytes. Atresia increased as the period of confinement increased. Following return of individual fish to confined conditions, blood steroids fell rapidly to levels seen in fish that had remained confined throughout. It is suggested that the reduced sex steroid levels detected during confinement were insufficient to allow developing oocytes to complete oocyte growth and maturation. The detection of significantly lower proportions of stage 3 and significantly higher proportions of stage 6/7 oocytes soon after transfer suggest that fish were preparing one batch of oocytes for spawning (stage 6/7 oocytes) whilst recruiting from a pool of previtellogenic oocytes (stage 3) for the ensuing spawning cycle.  相似文献

The epidemiology of paramphistomosis in cattle was studied using tracer calves in a subtropical location in eastern Australia. Two species of paramphistomes were present; Calicophoron calicophorum and Paramphistomum ichikawai. The former species was the most abundant. Gyraulus scottianus and Helicorbis australiensis acted as intermediate hosts, respectively. Paramphistome burdens varied seasonally and were dependent upon the number of infected host snails. Peak fluke burdens and clinical paramphistomosis occurred in late summer in year 1 and early winter in year 2. The peak fluke burdens coincided with prolonged inundation of the grazing areas resulting in rapid multiplication and infection of host snails, and the period after the inundated areas dried out. The prevalence of infection in snails was high in both years, peaking at 98% in year 1 and 58% in year 2. The main host snail, G. scottianus, aestivated and retained infection for at least 24 weeks in soil, and in vegetable debris on the surface of the soil, resulting in rapid reappearance of host snails and infective metacercariae after the onset of seasonal rain. Metacercariae survived on herbage for up to 12 weeks, depending on the environmental conditions. Paramphistome burdens in calves could be predicted from the prevalence of infection in the host snail, the water levels and an index of surface water on the grazing site. Control of paramphistomosis during and after flooding may be achieved by removal of susceptible cattle from pasture or regular treatment during these periods. Strategic treatment during the dry season may reduce contamination of snail habitats and infectivity of the pasture in the following wet season.  相似文献

We studied the process of offspring production in queenless colonies of Acromyrmex subterraneus brunneus, and particularly evaluated the ovary development of workers as a function of their age. For this, subcolonies were set up and evaluated at different periods of isolation from the queen (2, 4 and 6 months), besides individually labeled age groups. The subcolonies were assessed according to offspring production and ovaries containing oocytes or not. The evaluations showed worker oviposition and development of males originating from worker-laid eggs. At 2 months' absence of the queen, eggs and larvae were found, with eggs in a higher proportion than larvae. After 4 months, the proportion of eggs had reduced while larvae had increased, and a pupa was found in one subcolony. At 6 months, besides a higher share of larvae, one pupa and one adult male were found. Dissection of workers revealed ovaries containing oocytes during the periods of evaluation. Only a group of medium-sized and large workers, 23.3%, 20.9% and 37.5% of the population from each period assessed in queenless subcolonies respectively, presented developed oocytes in the ovary. The same was observed in colonies with a queen, with 17.6%, 19.6% and 7.8% of the group of dissected workers from each time period, respectively. With respect to worker age, we observed by dissection of the ovary, that the greatest percentage of individuals with ovarioles containing oocytes occurred at 45 days (6 weeks) up to 90 days (12 weeks). These results probably are associated with the workers reproduction and the laying of trophic and reproductive eggs in colonies with and without a queen; these eggs have distinct functions in each situation.  相似文献

Some fundamental natural-history traits of the endangered mud snail Cerithidea rhizophorarum were investigated for three years in an open, bare, sandy tidal flat located on the east of Shikoku Island in southwestern Japan. Our study demonstrated a highly aggregated distribution of younger snails and complicated differences in vertical migration patterns between younger and older snails that might have prevented comprehensive understanding of the precise demography of C. rhizophorarum in previous studies. From late summer, juveniles of the first-year cohorts appeared patchily at 12–16 cm lower tidal heights than snails of the oldest cohorts and reached 5.0–7.5 mm in mean shell length by the first mid-autumn. In the second year, juveniles gradually moved upward and appeared at higher tidal heights. The second-year cohorts reached 15.6–19.1 mm in mean shell length by the end of the second autumn and converged into the oldest cohorts during the third year or later. Our results suggest that C. rhizophorarum matures sexually and starts reproduction from the fourth summer at the earliest. On the other hand, older snails showed a similar seasonal migration pattern every year—downward movement in summer and upward movement in autumn—probably associated with their reproductive activity and/or a seasonal change in the maximum tidal height. For conservation of C. rhizophorarum, it is very important to preserve both the higher area as a main habitat for older snails and the lower tidal flat as the nursery ground.  相似文献

In this study, we examine salinity stress tolerances of two populations of the invasive species New Zealand mud snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum, one population from a high salinity environment in the Columbia River estuary and the other from a fresh water lake. In 1996, New Zealand mud snails were discovered in the tidal reaches of the Columbia River estuary that is routinely exposed to salinity at near full seawater concentrations. In contrast, in their native habitat and throughout its spread in the western US, New Zealand mud snails are found only in fresh water ecosystems. Our aim was to determine whether the Columbia River snails have become salt water adapted. Using a modification of the standard amphipod sediment toxicity test, salinity tolerance was tested using a range of concentrations up to undiluted seawater, and the snails were sampled for mortality at daily time points. Our results show that the Columbia River snails were more tolerant of acute salinity stress with the LC50 values averaging 38 and 22 Practical Salinity Units for the Columbia River and freshwater snails, respectively. DNA sequence analysis and morphological comparisons of individuals representing each population indicate that they were all P. antipodarum. These results suggest that this species is salt water adaptable and in addition, this investigation helps elucidate the potential of this aquatic invasive organism to adapt to adverse environmental conditions.  相似文献

Susceptibility experiments were carried out with a Biomphalaria straminea-like planorbid snail (Biomphalaria aff. straminea, species inquirenda) from Espinillar, near Salto (Uruguay), in the area of the Salto Grande reservoir, exposed individually to 5 miracidia of Schistosoma mansoni (SJ2 and BH2 strains). Of 130 snails exposed to the SJ2 strain, originally infective to Biomphalaria tenagophila, 30 became infected (23%). The prepatent (precercarial) period ranged from 35 to 65 days. The cercarial output was irregular, following no definite pattern, varying from 138 to 76,075 per snail (daily average 4.3 to 447.5) and ending up with death. Three specimens that died, without having shed cercariae, on days 69 (2) and 80 after exposure to miracidia, had developing secondary sporocysts in their tissues, justifying the prospect of a longer precercarial period in these cases. In a control group of 120 B. tenagophila, exposed to the SJ2 strain, 40 became infected, showing an infection rate (33.3%) not significantly different from that of the Espinillar snail (chi 2 = 3.26). No cercariae were produced by any of the Espinillar snails exposed to miracidia of the BH2 strain, originally infective to Biomphalaria glabrata. Four specimens showed each a primary sporocyst in one tentacle, which disappeared between 15 and 25 days post-exposure, and two others died with immature, very slender sporocysts in their tissues on days 36 and 54. In a control group of 100 B. glabrata exposed to BH2 miracidia, 94 shed cercariae (94%) and 6 remained negative. Effects of serotonin or glutamate receptors antagonists on reactivation of food aversion conditioning were studied in snail Helix lucorum. Metiotepin (nonselective serotonin receptor antagonist, 0.1 mg/snail) or MK-801 (NMDA glutamate receptor antagonist, 0.005 mg/snail) were injected 24 hours after 3 days of food aversion conditioning, then reminding stimulus (banana, "conditioned" food) was presented and food aversion conditioning was tested. Long-term impairing (more then 2 weeks) of food aversion conditioning was found 3 hours after concurrent reminding and inhibitors injection. Injection of receptor antagonists without reminding stimulus did not influence on food aversion conditioning retrieval. Besides, in snails with amnesia after metiotepin/reminder, facilitation of repeated elaboration aversion conditioning on banana is revealed. The repeated training of snails with amnesia caused by MK-801/reminder did not result in food aversion conditioning. It is was suggested that 5-HT5,6,7 serotonin receptors are involved in mechanisms of memory "trace" extraction of food aversion conditioning, whereas NMDA glutamate receptor - in processes of its storage in snail.  相似文献

Histological methods were used for studying 30 ovaries of early human embryos from 7 to 11 weeks of development. It was shown that in the process of development of the ovary the number of mitotically dividing oogonia decreased from 76% in 7-8 weeks to 41% in the period of 10-11 weeks. The mototic division of oogonia was characterized by high activity from 3,6% to 6,8%. However, as early as in the ovaries of 7-8 week embryos there occurred transition of a part of oogonia into oocytes of preleptotene stages which were characterized by processes of spiralization and despiralization of chromatin in the nuclei. The amount of such oocytes increases in the process of development of the embryo. The amount of oocytes at the stage of condensation of chromatin "prochromosomes" increases from 7,6% to 14,4%, the amount of oocytes at the stage of the following despiralization increased from 2,1% to 21% when comparing the ovaries of embryos of 7-8 and 10=11 weeks of development. The size of nucleoli was found to change in the period of preleptotene transformations in the oocyte nuclei. A large-scale laboratory facility for the maintenance of several thousand gravid sea urchins (S. purpuratus) is described. Gametes of this species provide an important research resource for studies of animal development. Methods are described for culturing adult S. purpuratus for periods up to two years or more with almost no mortality after the first three to four weeks following collection. Adult females can be maintained in a fertile state in the culture system for four to six months. When spawned, gravid females living in the culture facility will routinely regenerate normal sized populations of fertile oocytes at 1 to 2-month intervals. Such females can be used repeatedly as a source of mature gametes for laboratory research. The reproductive performance of these females can be predicted approximately by the number of late vitellogenic oocytes present in their ovaries. After several months the pool of these oocytes is exhausted and no further mature oocytes can be found for a long period. We show, however, that such females are able to carry out a complete annual cycle of oogenesis if held for a long enough period of time in the culture system.  相似文献

1200 adult Biomphalaria glabrata were submitted during 6 weeks to anhydrobiosis condition. Some snails were healthy, some were previously infected 3 days or 12 days ago with 8 +/- 2 miracidia of Schistosoma mansoni, others were shedding cercariae. The snails were put on soil or buried into hermetically closed, or ventilated, plastic boxes. There was no survival of snails kept in sealed boxes, or among positive snails, but 44% of control healthy snails and 40.6% of infected (for 3 or 12 days) snails in ventilated boxes were living at the term of the desiccation stage. Survival was better for "on soil" snails than for "buried" snails, but no difference was shown between 3-days and 12-days infection. The surviving desiccated B. glabrata had a lesser death rate and a lesser cercarial production than infected snails kept in water. An inferior production of male cercariae comparatively to female and to "mixed" cercariae was demonstrated by statistical analysis of the cercarial sheddings. In all positive snails, periodic variations of cercarial production was shown, whatever the sex of those cercariae. In addition many pauses of the sheddings were established by the authors.  相似文献

By modifying the behaviour and morphology of hosts, parasites may strongly impact host individuals, populations and communities. We examined the effects of a common trematode parasite on its snail host, Batillaria cumingi (Batillariidae). This widespread snail is usually the most abundant invertebrate in salt marshes and mudflats of the northeastern coast of Asia. More than half (52.6%, n=1360) of the snails in our study were infected. We found that snails living in the lower intertidal zone were markedly larger and exhibited different shell morphology than those in the upper intertidal zone. The large morphotypes in the lower tidal zone were all infected by the trematode, Cercaria batillariae (Heterophyidae). We used a transplant experiment, a mark-and-recapture experiment and stable carbon isotope ratios to reveal that snails infected by the trematode move to the lower intertidal zone, resume growth after maturation and consume different resources. By simultaneously changing the morphology and behaviour of individual hosts, this parasite alters the demographics and potentially modifies resource use of the snail population. Since trematodes are common and often abundant in marine and freshwater habitats throughout the world, their effects potentially alter food webs in many systems.  相似文献

The effects of a mud snail, Cipangopaludina chinensis laeta (Martens) (Architaenioglossa: Viviparidae), on terrestrial arthropods through rice plant development in a paddy field were investigated in 2013 and 2014 by a field experiment. There were no significant differences between treatments in the abundance of aquatic organisms, which comprised several functional feeding groups in both years. The presence of mud snails did not significantly affect plant height and soil plant analysis development values, either, except in June 2014, when tiller number and biomass of the rice plants tended to be larger in plots with snails versus those without. Significantly higher abundances of terrestrial organisms, including phytophagous pest insects and other insects, but not natural enemies of the pest insects, occurred in plots with snails. As shown by principal component analysis, the community structure of the terrestrial organisms was significantly different between the two treatments in both years. The results of this study indicate that mud snails play an important role in the paddy field ecosystem, in which they influence the biomass production of rice plants and the abundance of organisms in terrestrial ecosystems through direct and indirect interactions at different trophic levels.  相似文献

The annual life cycle of Millerichthys robustus is described from an ephemeral pool in Veracruz, Mexico. The state of the pool can be divided into three periods: a flood period lasting from September to March when the pool was filled with water, a drought period from April to June when the pool was dry, and a humid period in July and August when the pool was intermittently filled. Soil substrate was examined in each of these three periods (flood, drought and humid), embryos were found, and the stage of embryonic diapause was determined. During the flood period embryos were in diapause I; during the drought period in diapause II; and during the humid period mainly in diapause III with a small subset in diapause II (an example of a bet-hedging strategy). Two hatching periods (separated by two weeks) were documented during the beginning of the flood period. Fish growth was analyzed in both males and females, with females showing an overall slower growth rate and smaller adult size. In females, ovarian maturity was characterized histologically to understand the reproductive cycle. The onset of sexual maturity began during the third week after hatching (21 days) with the presence of secondary sexual characteristics in females and the beginning of Secondary Growth Stage in some ovarian follicles. All stages of oogenesis, postovulatory follicles and ovulated oocytes were observed from the fourth week post hatching (28 days) until death. M. robustus appears to exhibit similar patterns of embryonic diapause compared to other annual killifish living in seasonal water bodies closer to the equator. This study characterizes (for the first time) the adaptations and life cycle of M. robustus. This information could be useful to evaluate the potential risk of these populations and, if necessary, to develop plans for their conservation.  相似文献

Hourly variations in oocyte stages were characterized by size class and histological examination inassociation to the daytime tidal cycle for the Hawaiian saddleback wrasse, Thalassoma duperrey . Stage I (previtellogenic), stage II (vitellogenic) and stage III (hydrated) oocytes were identified as distinct clutches. During the autumn the profiles of oocytes stages showed rapid, group-synchronous development from stage I to stage III. Concurrent increases in percentages of both stage III oocytes and the gonadosomatic index (GSI) were positively correlated to and occurred I h before the high tide. Increases in stage I and stage II oocytes 1 h after high tide indicated development of new clutches following a decline in stage III oocytes, and the appearance of post-ovulatory follicles. The profile of stage II oocytes always exceeded 30% of the ovary. Lower GSI and percentages of stage III oocytes reflect significantly reduced reproduction in the summer: as in the autumn, both factors were significantly correlated, but neither variable showed a statistical relationship to the tide. Nevertheless, hydrated oocytes were found almost exclusively within 2 h of the high tide. The association of developmental changes with changes in tidal heights points to the importance of the tidal cycle or its underlying lunar influence as a predominant reproductive cue. These data show that developmental changes in oocytes occur more rapidly than observed in some more commonly studied temperate species which reproduce annually.  相似文献

The effects of dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) on immature oocytes during maturation in culture and following penetration by spermatozoa were examined. Germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) was observed in all oocytes cultured in the maturation medium supplemented with 2, 4 and 8% DMSO. When the oocytes were cultured in medium with 8% DMSO, 95% (57 60 ) of them were inhibited at prometaphase-I. Cumulus cells were significantly (P<0.05) beneficial for resumption of oocyte nuclear maturation during further culture in the maturation medium for 4, 8 and 24 h after DMSO treatment. When the oocytes were additionally cultured for 4 and 8 h in the maturation medium after DMSO treatment, the proportions of oocytes reaching metaphase-II were significantly (P<0.05) higher in those cultured with spermatozoa than without (68 vs 49% and 84 vs 56%, respectively). These results indicate that 8% DMSO does not affect GVBD of oocytes, but conversely it inhibits oocytes at prometaphase-I, and that cumulus cells are important for recovery from DMSO inhibition and for the resumption of nuclear maturation of oocytes. Sperm penetration was also found to stimulate the completion of meiotic maturation of oocytes inhibited at metaphase-I with 8% DMSO.  相似文献

潮滩是海岸带湿地的主要类型之一,其中分布的底栖生物对生态环境具有重要的调节作用。潮滩底栖微藻、泥沙与水动力之间存在相互作用,影响潮滩微地貌形态,明晰底栖生物对潮滩微地貌的演化机制至关重要。以黄河三角洲潮滩湿地为研究区,通过构建潮滩微地貌动力模型,探究底栖生物对微地貌格局演化的作用机制,分析底栖生物对微地貌系统稳定性的影响。结果表明(1)底栖微藻生长与泥沙扩散、水流再分配过程交互作用驱动下,潮滩上可形成底栖微藻覆盖的高丘与积水洼地交替分布的规则性微地貌斑图;(2)微地貌斑图的形成提高了潮滩生态系统初级生产力和泥沙淤积高度;(3)底栖微藻与泥沙、水流的交互作用使得潮滩微地貌系统对侵蚀扰动呈现非线性响应行为,系统存在临界点,且在一定侵蚀率范围内存在双稳态;(4)黄河口泥螺入侵使得微地貌系统抵抗侵蚀扰动能力减小,且系统稳定性随泥螺生物量的增加而降低。  相似文献

The role of serotonin in expression of membrane properties of identified neurons was studied during defensive reflex conditioning using the neurotoxic analogue of serotonin 5,6-dihydroxytryptamine (5,6-DHT). The defensive reflex conditioning in snails was destroyed on the second day after second injection of 5,6-DHT. Through the 1st weeks after second injection of 5,6-DHT the snails were learned but worse than snails after injection of saline solution. This result shows the recovery of snail's learning ability within 2 weeks after the second injection of 5,6-DHT. It was found that injection of 5,6-DHT prevented the decrease of membrane and threshold potentials of command neurons during defensive reflex conditioning as compared with the snails injected with 5,6-DHT without learning.  相似文献

Each of 8 snails in 2 groups of Bulinus (Physopsis) globosus,1 group raised in isolation and 1 group raised in community,were paired for 14 consecutive days with a male-acting partnersnail. In each group, the experimental snails, which were notallowed to act as males, were able to copulate as females onapproximately 94% of the days paired. Two copulations as female,with the same male partner, occurred on 50% of the days thatthe snails were paired, in the 2 groups combined. Non-receptivefemale behaviour by the experimental snails occurred frequently,and copulation was prevented by such behaviour during 6 pairings,3 in each group. Young B. (P.) africanus first copulated as females when theywere 31–33 days old. The accessory sex glands of the femalereproductive tracts of these young female-acting snails containedmoderate to large amounts of secretion. B. (P.) africanus, which were raised in pairs, laidcross-fertilizedeggs in isolation for an average of 76 days, and 1559 eggs/snailwere deposited before cross-fertilization ceased. Cross-fertilizedeggs were produced for as long as 120 days. After 1 copulation as female, virgin B. (P.) africanus laidcross-fertilized eggs for an average of 78 days and deposited3654 eggs/snail before crossfertilization ceased. Cross-fertilizedeggs were produced for as long as 113 days. After 2 copulationsas female, 1 copulation on each of 2 consecutive days, virginB. (P.) africanus laid cross-fertilized eggs for an averageof 102 days and produced 4397 eggs/snail before cross-fertilizationceased. Cross-fertilized eggs were produced for as long as 123days. Snails which were homozygous for an allele governing mantlepigment pattern were raised with a partner which was homozygousfor a different pigment pattern. Young produced in a 4-day periodafter the snails were isolated were 100% heterozygous. The snailswere then rearranged into pairs with a partner of the same genotypefor 4 days, during which time 26% of the young produced werehomozygous. The snails were again isolated for 4 days, and 49%of the young produced during this 4-day period were homozygous.The results of this experiment strongly suggest that multipleoutcrossing occurred. In B. (P.) africanus, stored allosperm were used to fertilizeeggs after 1, 4 and 7 weeks of starvation; after 1 and 4 weeksof 15°C low temperature and 4 weeks of 15°C + 4 weeksof 10°C low temperature; and after 1 and 4 weeks of desiccation.After 8 weeks of desiccation, 2 of 3 surviving snails reproducedby self-fertilization and 1 snail did not reproduce. Large quantities of filamentous green algae (Enteromorpha spp.) have regularly occurred on muddy and sandy tidal flats in Königshafen, on the island of Sylt (North Sea), since 1979 — covering the sediments in thick mats during the summer months. While spores ofEnteromorpha were encountered in both mud and sand, germling formation was restricted to sand. However, mud snails (Hydrobia ulvae Pennant) were overgrown with smallEnteromorpha filaments in both habitats, about 50% of them at a muddy site and 20% at a sandy one. Filaments, several cm in length and still adhering to the snails, became tangled into clusters. At the sandy site, with abundantArenicola marina L., these clusters slid into the feeding funnels of lugworm burrows; the importance of this secondary anchorage is demonstrated by a field experiment. We suggest that the primary and secondary attachment ofEnteromorpha filaments provided by benthic fauna is an essential step in the development of green algal mats on sedimentary tidal flats.  相似文献
