In insect societies, workers cooperate but may also pursue their individual interests, such as laying viable male eggs. The case of obligatory slave-making ants is of particular interest because workers do not engage in maintenance activities and foraging. Therefore, worker egg laying is expected to be less detrimental for colony efficiency than in related, nonparasitic species. Furthermore, as slave-making workers usually do not perform brood care and thus might have little power in manipulating sex allocation, they might be more strongly selected to increase their direct fitness by producing their own sons than workers in nonparasitic species. In this study we investigated worker reproduction in four natural colonies of the slave-making ant Polyergus rufescens, using highly variable microsatellite markers. Our results show that workers produce up to 100% of the males. This study thus presents the first direct evidence of an almost complete takeover of male reproduction by workers in ants.  相似文献

We consider worker-controlled sex investments in eusocial Hymenoptera (ants in particular) and assume that relatedness asymmetry is variable among colonies and that workers are able to assess the relatedness asymmetry in their own colony. We predict that such “assessing” workers should maximize their inclusive fitness by specializing in the production of the sex to which they are relatively most related, i.e., colonies whose workers have a relatedness asymmetry below the population average should specialize in males, whereas colonies whose workers have a higher than average relatedness asymmetry should specialize in making females. Our argument yields the expectation that colony sex ratios will be bimodally distributed in ant populations where relatedness asymmetry is variable owing to multiple mating, worker reproduction, and/or polygyny. No such bimodality is expected, however, in ant species where relatedness asymmetry is known to be constant, or in cases where relatedness asymmetry is supposed to be irrelevant due to allospecific brood rearing under queen control, as in the slave-making ants. Comparative data on colony sex ratios in ants are reviewed to test the predictions. The data partly support our contentions, but are as yet insufficient to be considered as decisive evidence.  相似文献

Summary Colonies of slave-making ants have been used repeatedly to test sex allocation theory. It was suggested that workers of slave-making ants are more strongly selected to reproduce than workers of related, non-parasitic species, because they are incapable of manipulating sex allocation and the sexualization of larvae in their colonies. I show here that in slave-making Formicoxenini, worker ovaries on average consist of significantly more ovarioles than in non-parasiticLeptothorax species. Similarly, whereas in mostLeptothorax species, workers form reproductive hierarchies and lay eggs only in orphaned colonies, slave-maker workers show antagonistic interactions already in the presence of the queen and at least in some species have been observed ovipositing in queen-right colonies. Inclusive fitness theory predicts that sex investment ratios in eusocial Hymenoptera are a function of the relatedness asymmetry (relative relatedness to females and males) of the individuals controlling sex allocation. In monogynous ants (with one queen per colony), assuming worker control, the theory therefore predicts female‐biased sex investment ratios, as found in natural populations. Recently, E.O. Wilson and M.A. Nowak criticized this explanation and presented an alternative hypothesis. The Wilson–Nowak sex ratio hypothesis proposes that, in monogynous ants, there is selection for a 1 : 1 numerical sex ratio to avoid males remaining unmated, which, given queens exceed males in size, results in a female‐biased sex investment ratio. The hypothesis also asserts that, contrary to inclusive fitness theory, queens not workers control sex allocation and queen–worker conflict over sex allocation is absent. Here, I argue that the Wilson–Nowak sex ratio hypothesis is flawed because it contradicts Fisher's sex ratio theory, which shows that selection on sex ratio does not maximize the number of mated offspring and that the sex ratio proposed by the hypothesis is not an equilibrium for the queen. In addition, the hypothesis is not supported by empirical evidence, as it fails to explain ‘split’ (bimodal) sex ratios or data showing queen and worker control and ongoing queen–worker conflict. By contrast, these phenomena match predictions of inclusive fitness theory. Hence, the Wilson–Nowak sex ratio hypothesis fails both as an alternative hypothesis for sex investment ratios in eusocial Hymenoptera and as a critique of inclusive fitness theory.  相似文献

Queen-worker conflict in the social Hymenoptera has become a cornerstone of sex-ratio theory. Extending that theory to conflict over life-history decisions, however, has proven controversial. Pamilo first proposed that queen-worker conflict over reproductive allocation should be important in perennial, social insect colonies, but Bourke and Chan have questioned the generality of that claim. Here, we reexamine this problem for the simplest case of a monogynous and monandrous hymenopteran society by relaxing assumptions of Pamilo's model. In populations with monomorphic sex ratios, queens and workers agree on allocation to growth versus reproduction. However, variation in sex allocation across colonies can induce queen-worker conflict over reproductive allocation; the former is a necessary condition for the latter. We explore how conflict over reproductive allocation depends on the population-wide sex ratio, the survivorship probabilities for existing colonies, and the likelihood of establishing new colonies. We then test our theory for two ant species, each with two years of data. We find considerable support for our contention of queen-worker conflict over reproductive allocation and suggest how future studies should be structured to explore this conflict further.  相似文献

Summary Social group viability results from a trade-off between cooperation and conflict, driven respectively by group and individual interests. Workers of the slave-making ants are known to have a high egg-laying potential, leading to a potential conflict over male production. Queenright and queenless nests of the slave-making ant Protomognathus americanus show a near-linear dominance hierarchy, and dominance rank is correlated with reproductive activity. Genetic and behavioural analysis revealed that the queen, when present in the nest, is behaviourally dominant and monopolises reproduction. In queenless nests, the haploid (male) brood is produced primarily by a single worker. We suggest the dominance hierarchy regulates male production, between the queen and her workers as well as among workers. Comparison of our results to another study allows us to place our data in an ecological context. This slave-making ant species appears to fit the concession model of reproductive skew: where resources (i.e. host nests) are poor, there is strong skew and where resources are richer reproduction is more egalitarian.Received 31 July 2003; revised 7 October 2003; accepted 9 October 2003.  相似文献

The local resource competition (LRC) hypothesis predicts thatwherever philopatric offspring compete for resources with theirmothers, offspring sex ratios should be biased in favor of thedispersing sex. In ants, LRC is typically found in polygynous(multiple queen) species where foundation of new nests occursby budding, which results in a strong population structure anda male-biased population-wide sex ratio. However, under polygyny,the effect of LRC on sex allocation is often blurred by theeffect of lowered relatedness asymmetries among colony members.Moreover, environmental factors, such as the availability ofresources, have also been shown to deeply influence sex ratioin ants. We investigated sex allocation in the monogynous (singlequeen) ant Cataglyphis cursor, a species where colonies reproduceby budding and both male and female sexuals are produced throughparthenogenesis, so that between-colony variations in relatednessasymmetries should be reduced. Our results show that sex allocationin C. cursor is highly male biased both at the colony and populationlevels. Genetic analyses indicate a significant isolation-by-distancein the study population, consistent with limited dispersal offemales. As expected from asexual reproduction, only weak variationsin relatedness asymmetry of workers toward sexual offspringoccur across colonies, and they are not associated with colonysex ratio. Inconsistent with the predictions of the resourceavailability hypothesis, the male bias significantly increaseswith colony size, and investment in males, but not in females,is positively correlated with total investment in sexuals. Overall,our results are consistent with the predictions of the LRC hypothesisto account for sex ratio variation in this species.  相似文献

We aimed at identifying the causal basis of previously shown interrelations between demographic and genetic colony structure, ecological factors and split sex ratios in the ant, Leptothorax nylanderi. Colony-level variation in sex allocation was only partly explained by annual fluctuations during eight study years and by resource availability as indicated by sexual production of colonies. Allocation ratios were highly male-biased in dense populations with ephemeral nest sites and high frequencies of colonies containing several unrelated matrilines. Field observations and experimental manipulations showed that nest site limitation leads to such heterogeneous colonies. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that genetic heterogeneity directly causes male-biased investment, although relatedness asymmetry is not influenced by invasion of unrelated queens. The influence of genetic composition on allocation strategies might either be explained by negative feedback mechanisms connected with habitat saturation or by a lower efficiency of heterogeneous colonies. Our results thus demonstrate which factors other than variation in relatedness asymmetry can explain split sex ratios in ants. An empirical test of a model on reproductive allocation revealed on-going queen-worker conflict over colony growth and sexual reproduction. Workers controlled reproductive allocation, but queen-worker conflict ceased in large colonies with a high survival rate.  相似文献

Social insect colonies invest in reproduction and growth, buthow colonies achieve an adaptive allocation to these life-historycharacters remains an open question in social insect biology.Attempts to understand how a colony's investment in reproductionis shaped by the queen and the workers have proved complicatedbecause of the potential for queen–worker conflict overthe colony's investment in males versus females. Honeybees,in which this conflict is expected to be minimal or absent,provide an opportunity to more clearly study how the actionsand interactions of individuals influence the colony's productionand regulation of males (drones). We examined whether honeybeequeens can influence drone regulation by either allowing orpreventing them from laying drone eggs for a period of timeand then examining their subsequent tendency to lay drone andworker eggs. Queens who initially laid drone eggs subsequentlylaid fewer drone eggs than the queens who were initially preventedfrom producing drone eggs. This indicates that a colony's regulationof drones may be achieved not only by the workers, who buildwax cells for drones and feed the larvae, but also by the queen,who can modify her production of drone eggs. In order to betterunderstand how the queen and workers contribute to social insectcolony decisions, future work should attempt to distinguishbetween actions that reflect conflict over sex allocation andthose that reflect cooperation and shared control over the colony'sinvestment in reproduction.  相似文献

Carry-over effects describe the phenomenon whereby an animal''s previous conditions influence its subsequent performance. Carry-over effects are unlikely to affect individuals uniformly, but the factors modulating their strength are poorly known. Variation in the strength of carry-over effects may reflect individual differences in pace-of-life: slow-paced, shyly behaved individuals are thought to favour an allocation to self-maintenance over current reproduction, compared to their fast-paced, boldly behaved conspecifics (the pace-of-life syndrome hypothesis). Therefore, detectable carry-over effects on breeding should be weaker in bolder individuals, as they should maintain an allocation to reproduction irrespective of previous conditions, while shy individuals should experience stronger carry-over effects. We tested this prediction in black-legged kittiwakes breeding in Svalbard. Using miniature biologging devices, we measured non-breeding activity of kittiwakes and monitored their subsequent breeding performance. We report a number of negative carry-over effects of non-breeding activity on breeding, which were generally stronger in shyer individuals: more active winters were followed by later breeding phenology and poorer breeding performance in shy birds, but these effects were weaker or undetected in bolder individuals. Our study quantifies individual variability in the strength of carry-over effects on breeding and provides a mechanism explaining widespread differences in individual reproductive success.  相似文献

In iteroparous animals, investment in growth is compromised by investment in reproduction, especially in species with indeterminate growth. Life‐history theory predicts that growth should be favoured over reproduction, assuming size‐related fecundity or survival. Hence, increase body condition represents an increase in reproductive potential. Simultaneous hermaphrodites should adjust their resource allocation to each sex function in response to current conditions but, recently, it has been suggested that, in hermaphrodites, gender allocation should be considered as a three‐way trade‐off, including the investment in somatic growth. Due to the higher costs involved, the female function is affected to a greater extent by environmentally stressful conditions rather than the male function. To examine this, we induced stress in the hermaphroditic earthworm Eisenia fetida (Savigny, 1826) and looked for changes in resource allocation in nonreproductive and reproductive individuals. Experimental stress was induced by using tweezers to elicit contractile escape movements. We predicted that stressed earthworms would preferentially allocate resources to growth. In nonreproductive individuals, however, stress had a negative effect on growth, although weight recovery was rapid once manipulation ceased, indicating the importance of body condition, as well as the existence of mechanisms of compensatory growth for growth trajectories in this earthworm species. The response of reproductive individuals was consistent with our expectation: (1) stressed worms maintained their growth rate at the expense of current reproduction and (2) stressed earthworms laid 25% fewer cocoons, which were 30% lighter than cocoons laid by control earthworms. The present results suggest that E. fetida regulates its reproductive effort and that future reproduction has more impact on its fitness than current reproduction. The conflicts over sex allocation and male production in insect societies have long served as an important test bed for Hamilton''s theory of inclusive fitness, but have for the most part been considered separately. Here, we develop new coevolutionary models to examine the interaction between these two conflicts and demonstrate that sex ratio and colony productivity costs of worker reproduction can lead to vastly different outcomes even in species that show no variation in their relatedness structure. Empirical data on worker-produced males in eight species of Melipona bees support the predictions from a model that takes into account the demographic details of colony growth and reproduction. Overall, these models contribute significantly to explaining behavioural variation that previous theories could not account for.  相似文献

Worker‐queen conflicts over reproductive allocation (colony maintenance vs. reproduction) and sex allocation (females vs. males) were examined in two populations of the facultatively polygynous ant Myrmica ruginodis. Plasticity of social organization in the form of two co‐existing social types (microgyna and macrogyna) has a profound effect on reproductive allocation. Workers control sex allocation by biasing sex ratios towards their own interest, but local resource competition (LRC) because of restricted dispersal of microgyna females resulted in male bias in one study population. Colony sex ratios were split and followed the predictions of the split sex ratio theory: single queen colonies with higher relatedness asymmetry (RA) produced more females than multiple queen colonies with lower RA. Single and multiple queen colonies showed similar patterns in most aspects of their reproduction, and reproductive allocation could not be explained by the hypothesis tested. This suggests that reproductive allocation conflict is of minor importance in M. ruginodis.  相似文献

For more than 20 years, sex allocation in hymenopteran societies has been a major topic in insect sociobiology. A recurring idea was that relatedness asymmetrics arising from their haplodiploid sex determination system would lead to various parent-offspring conflicts over optimal reproduction. A possible weakness of existing theory is that only interests of nuclear genes are properly accounted for. Yet, a diversity of maternally transmitted elements manipulate the reproduction of their host in many solitary arthropod groups. The bacterium Wolbachia is a striking example of such a selfish cytoplasmic element, with effects ranging from reproductive incompatibility between host strains, induction of parthenogenesis and feminization of males. This paper reports on a first PCR-based Wolbachia screening in ants. Out of 50 Indo-Australian species, 50% screened positive for an A-group strain. One of these species also harboured a B-group strain in a double infection. Various factors that might explain the unusually high incidence of Wolbachia in ants are discussed. In general, Wolbachia may represent a widespread and previously unrecognized party active in the conflicts of interest within social insect colonies.  相似文献

Despite the recent interest in animal personality and behavioral syndromes, there is a paucity of explanations for why distinct behavioral traits should evolve to correlate. We investigate whether such correlations across apparently distinct behavioral traits may be explained by variation in life history strategy among individual ant colonies. Life history theory predicts that the way in which individuals allocate energy towards somatic maintenance or reproduction drives several distinct traits in physiology, morphology, and energy use; it also predicts that an individual's willingness to engage in risky behaviors should depend on reproductive strategy. We use Temnothorax ants, which have been shown to exhibit ‘personalities’ and a syndrome that may reflect risk tolerance at the colony level. We measure colonies' relative investment in growth rate (new workers produced) compared to reproductive effort (males and queens produced). Comparing sterile worker production to reproductive alate production provides a direct measure of how colonies are investing their energy, analogous to investment in growth versus reproduction in a unitary organism. Consistently with this idea, we found that behavioral type of ant colonies was associated with their life history strategy: risk‐tolerant colonies grew faster and invested more in reproduction, whereas risk‐averse colonies had lower growth rate but invested relatively more in workers. This provides evidence that behavioral syndromes can be a consequence of life‐history strategy variation, linking the two fields and supporting the use of an integrative approach.  相似文献

Sex allocation theory predicts parents should adjust their investment in male and female offspring in a way that increases parental fitness. This has been shown in several species and selective contexts. Yet, seasonal sex ratio variation within species and its underlying causes are poorly understood. Here, we study sex allocation variation in the wood ant Formica pratensis. This species displays conflict over colony sex ratio as workers and queens prefer different investment in male and female offspring, owing to haplodiploidy and relatedness asymmetries. It is unique among Formica ants because it produces two separate sexual offspring cohorts per season. We predict sex ratios to be closer to queen optimum in the early cohort but more female‐biased and closer to worker optimum in the later one. This is because the power of workers to manipulate colony sex ratio varies seasonally with the availability of diploid eggs. Consistently, more female‐biased sex ratios in the later offspring cohort over a three‐year sampling period from 93 colonies clearly support our prediction. The resulting seasonal alternation of sex ratios between queen and worker optima is a novel demonstration how understanding constraints of sex ratio adjustment increases our ability to predict sex ratio variation.  相似文献

We examined sex allocation patterns in island and mainland populationsof cooperatively breeding white-winged fairy-wrens. The markeddifferences in social structure between island and mainlandpopulations, in addition to dramatic plumage variation amongmales both within and between populations, provided a uniquesituation in which we could investigate different predictionsfrom sex allocation theory in a single species. First, we testthe repayment (local resource enhancement) hypothesis by askingwhether females biased offspring sex ratios in relation to theassistance they derived from helpers. Second, we test the malequality (attractiveness) hypothesis, which suggests that femalesmated to attractive high-quality males should bias offspringsex ratios in favor of males. Finally, we test the idea thatfemales in good condition should bias offspring sex ratios towardmales because they are able to allocate more resources to offspring,whereas females in poor condition should have increased benefitsfrom producing more female offspring (Trivers-Willard hypothesis).We used molecular sexing techniques to assess total offspringsex ratios of 86 breeding pairs over 2 years. Both offspringand first brood sex ratios were correlated with the pair-male'sbody condition such that females increased the proportion ofmales in their brood in relation to the body condition (masscorrected for body size) of their social partner. This relationwas both significant and remarkably similar in both years ofour study and in both island and mainland populations. Althoughconfidence of paternity can be low in this and other fairy-wrenspecies, we show how this finding might be consistent with themale quality (attractiveness) hypothesis with respect to malecondition. There was no support for the repayment hypothesis;the presence of helpers had no effect on offspring sex ratios.There was weak support for both the male quality (attractiveness)hypothesis with respect to plumage color and the maternal conditionhypothesis, but their influence on offspring sex ratios wasnegligible after controlling for the effects of pair-male condition.  相似文献

Sex allocation theory predicts that females should bias their reproductive investment towards the sex generating the greatest fitness returns. The fitness of male offspring is often more dependent upon maternal investment, and therefore, high‐quality mothers should invest in sons. However, the local resource competition hypothesis postulates that when offspring quality is determined by maternal quality or when nest site and maternal quality are related, high‐quality females should invest in the philopatric sex. Waterfowl – showing male‐biased size dimorphism but female‐biased philopatry – are ideal for differentiating between these alternatives. We utilized molecular sexing methods and high‐resolution maternity tests to study the occurrence and fitness consequences of facultative sex allocation in Barrow's goldeneyes (Bucephala islandica). We determined how female structural size, body condition, nest‐site safety and timing of reproduction affected sex allocation and offspring survival. We found that the overall sex ratio was unbiased, but in line with the local resource competition hypothesis, larger females produced female‐biased broods and their broods survived better than those of smaller females. This bias occurred despite male offspring being larger and tending to have lower post‐hatching survival. The species shows strong female breeding territoriality, so the benefit of inheriting maternal quality by philopatric daughters may exceed the potential mating benefit for sons of high‐quality females.  相似文献

The relative power of queens and workers at controlling sex allocation in the ant Colobopsis nipponicus is investigated in this study. Results show that C. nipponicus completely satisfies Hamilton's assumptions concerning colony social structure: monogyny, monoandry, and no worker reproduction. A genetic survey of the population structure rejects possibilities of local mate competition, local resource enhancement, and local resource competition, which all can bias population-allocation ratios from 0.5. Although these factors are absent, the observed sex-allocation ratio (male investment/total sexual investment; 0.250 ± 0.027) is significantly biased toward females and is not different from the estimated optimal ratio for workers (0.252). Thus, it appears that workers are likely to win in conflicts over sex allocation with queens.  相似文献

A crucial problem for every organism is how to allocate energy between competing life-history components. The optimal allocation decision is often state-dependent and mediated by hormones. Here, we investigated how age, a major state variable affects individuals'' hormonal response to a standardized stressor: a trait that may reflect allocation between self-maintenance and reproduction. We caught free-living house sparrows and measured their hormonal (corticosterone) response to capture stress in consecutive years. Using a long-term ringing dataset, we determined the age of the birds, and we partitioned the variation into within- and among-individual age components to investigate the effects of plasticity versus selection or gene flow, respectively, on the stress response. We found large among-individual variation in the birds'' hormone profiles, but overall, birds responded less strongly to capture stress as they grew older. These results suggest that stress responsiveness is a plastic trait that may vary within individuals in an adaptive manner, and natural selection may act on the reaction norms producing optimal phenotypic response in the actual environment and life-history stage.  相似文献
