Two Pyrenopeziza species, P. protrusa and P. nervicola known to have similar morphology, were newly reported from Japan. This study clarified that P. protrusa morphologically differs from P. nervicola in (1) more protruded outermost cells in ectal excipulum, (2) smaller ascospores, and (3) longer and thinner asci. Pyrenopeziza protrusa produces chlamydospore-like brown cells under culture while P. nervicola forms more complex, brown bulbils. These species formed distinct clades based on ITS-5.8S rDNA in the phylogenetic analysis. The two species did not share the same host.  相似文献

The spatial reconstruction of the XY pair of chromosomes from human spermatocytes has been made by the study of serial sections 1000 A in thickness. The sex pair during zygotene-pachytene forms a condensed mass of chromatin that has two filamentous, electron-opaque cores: the long and the short core. During early pachytene both cores have a common ending region, about 0.4–0.8 µ long. This common end is a synaptonemal complex, and each of the cores forms a lateral element of that complex. The cores become more convoluted during middle pachytene forming "ringlike bodies." Nucleoli from spermatocytes have three distinct regions: (a) granular; (b) dense fibrillar; and (c) clear intermediate. Occasional association of the XY pair and the heteropycnotic "basal knobs" results in apparent association of nucleoli and the sex pair in a minority of cells. The evidence presented is interpreted as a strong support of the hypothesis of homologous regions in the human XY pair.  相似文献

The putative mutualism between different host-specific Fergusobia nematodes and Fergusonina flies is manifested in a variety of gall types involving shoot or inflorescence buds, individual flower buds, stems, or young leaves in the plant family Myrtaceae. Different types of galls in the early-to-middle stages of development, with host-specific species of Fergusobia/Fergusonina, were collected from Australian members of the subfamily Leptospermoideae (six species of Eucalyptus, two species of Corymbia, and seven species of broad-leaved Melaleuca). Galls were sectioned and histologically examined to assess morphological changes induced by nematode/fly mutualism. The different gall forms were characterized into four broad categories: (i) individual flower bud, (ii) terminal and axial bud, (iii) ''basal rosette'' stem, and (iv) flat leaf. Gall morphology in all four types appeared to result from species-specific selection of the oviposition site and timing and number of eggs deposited in a particular plant host. In all cases, early parasitism by Fergusobia/Fergusonina involved several layers of uninucleate, hypertrophied cells lining the lumen of each locule (gall chamber where each fly larva and accompanying nematodes develop). Hypertrophied cells in galls were larger than normal epidermal cells, and each had an enlarged nucleus, nucleolus, and granular cytoplasm that resembled shoot bud gall cells induced by nematodes in the Anguinidae.  相似文献

Most species of Parnara and Pelopidas (Hesperiidae) are important pests of rice. In this study, the antennal morphology, types of sensilla, and their distribution of four skipper butterflies, including Parnara guttata (Bremer & Grey), Pa. bada (Moore), Pelopidas mathias (Fabricius) and Pe. agna (Moore), were observed using a scanning electron microscope. Six distinct morphological types of sensilla were found on the antennae of all of these species: sensilla squamiformia, sensilla trichodea, sensilla chaetica, sensilla auricillica, sensilla coeloconica, and Böhm sensilla. The sensilla trichodea are the most abundant sensilla among the four skipper butterflies, and the sensilla auricillica are confirmed on the antennae of butterflies for the second time. In addition, the possible functions of these sensilla are discussed in the light of previously reported lepidopteran insects, which may provide useful information for further study of the function of these antennal sensilla and for related pests control by applying sex pheromones.  相似文献

Drosophila birchii, a member of the melanogaster species group of the subgenus Sophophora, is common in the tropical rain forests of the Australia-New Guinea areas. Chromosome squashes are easily prepared from the larval ganglion cells and the sex chromosomes are readily recognizable. The species exhibits a remarkable karyotype variation. The metaphase plate figures, in general, show two pairs of V's, one pair of dots and one pair of sex chromosomes. Variations in metaphase chromosome morphology are found in the X (with four types), the Y (with three types) and chromosome IV (with two types). Chromosomal interchanges between X- and Y-chromosomes Type I are postulated to be involved in the differentiation of sex chromosome morphology while the modification of chromosome IV seems likely to be a result of the acquisition of extra heterochromatin. These chromosome types form seven distinct metaphase plate figures, all encountered in wild populations, thus giving D. birchii the most variable karyotype in the genus Drosophila.  相似文献

An attractive way to improve our understanding of sex determination evolution is to study the underlying mechanisms in closely related species and in a phylogenetic perspective. Hymenopterans are well suited owing to the diverse sex determination mechanisms, including different types of Complementary Sex Determination (CSD) and maternal control sex determination. We investigated different types of CSD in four species within the braconid wasp genus Asobara that exhibit diverse life-history traits. Nine to thirteen generations of inbreeding were monitored for diploid male production, brood size, offspring sex ratio, and pupal mortality as indicators for CSD. In addition, simulation models were developed to compare these observations to predicted patterns for multilocus CSD with up to ten loci. The inbreeding regime did not result in diploid male production, decreased brood sizes, substantially increased offspring sex ratios nor in increased pupal mortality. The simulations further allowed us to reject CSD with up to ten loci, which is a strong refutation of the multilocus CSD model. We discuss how the absence of CSD can be reconciled with the variation in life-history traits among Asobara species, and the ramifications for the phylogenetic distribution of sex determination mechanisms in the Hymenoptera.  相似文献

Blastocystis is a common protist isolated in humans and many animals. The parasite is a species complex composed of 19 subtypes, 9 of which have been found in humans. There are biological and molecular differences between Blastocystis subtypes although microscopy alone is unable to distinguish between these subtypes. Blastocystis isolates also display various morphological forms. Several of these forms, however, have not been properly evaluated on whether or not these play significant functions in the organism''s biology. In this study, we used imaging flow cytometry to analyze morphological features of Blastocystis isolates representing 3 subtypes (ST1, ST4 and ST7). We also employed fluorescence dyes to discover new cellular features. The profiles from each of the subtypes exhibit considerable differences with the others in terms of shape, size and granularity. We confirmed that the classical vacuolar form comprises the majority in all three subtypes. We have also evaluated other morphotypes on whether these represent distinct life stages in the parasite. Irregularly-shaped cells were identified but all of them were found to be dying cells in one isolate. Granular forms were present as a continuum in both viable and non-viable populations, with non-viable forms displaying higher granularity. By analyzing the images, rare morphotypes such as multinucleated cells could be easily observed and quantified. These cells had low granularity and lower DNA content. Small structures containing nucleic acid were also identified. We discuss the possible biological implications of these unusual forms.  相似文献

Occurence of sex chromatin is widespread amongLepidoptera. Somatic interphase nuclei of female larvae and adults contain a distinct heteropycnotic body which is missing in males. Two types of exceptions exist: one type in which heteropycnotic bodies not discernable from the sex chromatin in other species are formed in both sexes while in another type such chromatin bodies are absent in either sex. Absence of sex chromatin is not linked to a certain systematic entity within the Lepidoptera. In species possessing sex chromatin, the structural aspect of the heteropycnotic body varies within certain limits between different species and tissues. Chromosome analysis of 4 species, 3 of which exhibit normal chromatin bodies in females, while the 4th has no chromatin bodies in both sexes, agree with the interpretation of sex chromatin in the heterogametic females ofLepidoptera as a heteropycnotic Y-chromosome. This interpretation does not apply to those exceptional species which contain heteropycnotic bodies in both sexes.  相似文献

There are stem cells in RT4 neurotumor that undergo spontaneous differentiation into three distinct cell types in culture (cell type conversion). Stem cells (RT4-AC) and one of the differentiated cell types (RT4-D) are tumorigenic and synthesize glial-specific S100 protein, while the others (RT4-B and RT4-E) are nontumorigenic and demonstrate some neuronal function. Interrelationships between cell surface proteins and differentiation of RT4 cells were analyzed. The surface proteins are radioiodinated by a lactoperoxidase method, separated by gel electrophoresis in two dimensions, visualized by autoradiography, and quantitated according to the relative radioactivity associated with each protein species. Integral surface proteins are compared in the present study which remain associated with plasma membrane after the extraction of radioiodinated cells with 0.1 N NaOH. The extraction also helps to remove serum proteins in the medium which are absorbed on cell surfaces and may be artifactually recognized as surface proteins. All RT4 cell types are complex in cell surface protein composition and nearly 100 integral surface proteins have been identified when all RT4 cell types are combined. Many unique proteins as well as common proteins have been identified. Considerable similarity exists between RT4-AC and RT4-D and between RT4-B and RT4-E. The two cell types of each pair are distinct yet share some common neurological and tumorigenic characteristics. In contrast, little similarity exists in other combinations of the two cell types, e.g., RT4-AC and RT4-E, etc. The results support the notion that the pattern of cell surface protein expression is a stable differentiation property and a characteristic set of proteins corresponds to each stage of differentiation.  相似文献

Salamanders of the Plethodon glutinosus-P. jordani complex were tested for the ability to distinguish conspecific, sex-specific, and heterospecific chemical cues. Male and female P. glutinosus preferred substrates previously occupied by conspecifics over their own, but randomly chose between substrates marked by male or female conspecifics. This suggests that while these salamanders are able to distinguish between their own and conspecific substrate odours, they are unable to identify sex by means of substrate odours. Experiments using an olfactometer showed that male P. jordani, male and female P. glutinosus, and an electrophoretically distinct and non-hybridizing sympatric phenotype in the P. glutinosus complex (here called species A), all preferred female airborne odours over male airborne odours. This demonstrates that these salamanders can identify sex by means of airborne odours. Male P. glutinosus and species A both preferred conspecific female odours over heterospecific female odours in olfactometer experiments. These results suggest an important role for olfaction in the sexual and social behaviour of these salamanders, particularly as a pre-mating isolating mechanism.  相似文献

Fourteen morphologically putative populations of X. krugi were clearly separated into four different profiles by RFLP analysis (Alu I and Hinf I), sequencing of the ITS-1 region, and subsequent Maximum Likelihood phylogenetic analyses. These four profiles were further supported by a principal component analysis of morphometric characters that yielded four taxonomic clusters matching those produced by the molecular data. Sequence homology was greater amongst populations that represented the same RFLP profile than between profiles and similar both between representative populations of the RFLP profiles and putative closely related Xiphinema species. This study suggests that X. krugi is a potential species complex comprised of at least four distinct genotypes.  相似文献

Summary An ultrastructural study of the mucous cells of the intestinal epithelium of four lacertilian species (Lacerta lepida, Lacerta hispanica, Psammodromus algirus and Acanthodactylus erythrurus) is here reported. Two types of mucous cells have been found in these species: common mucous cells and granular mucous cells. Immature and mature forms of both types have been observed. The common mucous cells or typical goblet cells have the same characteristics in all four species. The granules of the granular mucous cells of the two species of Lacerta are similar but differ from those of the other two species.  相似文献

The taxonomy of treeshrews (Order Scandentia) has long been complicated by ambiguous morphological species boundaries, and the treeshrews of the Palawan faunal region of the Philippines are no exception. Four named forms in the genus Tupaia Raffles, 1821, have been described from four island groups based on subtle qualitative morphological characters, and as many as three distinct species have been recognized. A recent molecular phylogenetic study of relationships among Tupaia species suggests that the two currently-recognized treeshrew species from the Palawan faunal region diverged very recently relative to other sister-species divergences within the genus and may not represent species-level taxonomic entities. Here we review the taxonomic and biogeographic histories of the Tupaia taxa from this region. We also collected craniodental data from 133 skulls of all four named forms, representing five island populations, and conducted univariate and multivariate analyses on these data. Our morphometric results are consistent with molecular results, further suggesting that there is insufficient evidence to recognize T. moellendorffi Matschie, 1898, as a separate species from T. palawanensis Thomas, 1894. Our analyses also revealed a craniodentally divergent population from the island of Balabac, which has never been considered a distinct subspecies (or species) from the population on Palawan. These results have conservation implications for the island populations in our analyses, but additional surveys and molecular evidence will be required to fully assess conservation priorities for the treeshrews of the Palawan faunal region.  相似文献

Invasive species can have complex invasion histories, harbor cryptic levels of diversity, and pose taxonomic problems for pest management authorities. Roof rats, Rattus rattus sensu lato, are common invasive pests of the San Francisco Bay Area in California, USA. They are a significant health risk and pest management efforts impose a large financial investment from public institutions and private individuals. Recent molecular genetic and taxonomic studies of black rats in their native range in Asia have shown that the species is a complex of two karyotypic forms and four mitochondrial genetic lineages that may represent four distinct species. We used mtDNA sequences and nuclear microsatellite variation to identify which mitochondrial lineages of the R. rattus group are present in the San Francisco Bay Area and to test for gene flow among them. We recovered specimens with mtDNA sequences representing two of the major mtDNA lineages of the R. rattus group. Microsatellite variation, however, was not structured in concordance with mtDNA lineages, suggesting a more complex history involving hybridization and introgression between these lineages. Although Aplin et al. (2011) and Lack et al. (2012) reported R. rattus Lineage II in North America, this is the first detailed examination of possible gene flow amongst lineages in this region.  相似文献

The integument of ribbon worms in the order Heteronemertea is distinct from the integuments in the other taxa of nemerteans due to the presence of a special subepidermal glandular layer, the cutis. Among heteronemerteans, the ultrastructure of the cutis has been studied only in the Lineus ruber species complex. In the current study, ultrastructural (transmission electron microscopy) and histochemical studies of the epidermis and the cutis of Micrura bella from the basal Lineage A of the family Lineidae were performed. The epidermis consisted of ciliated and serous gland cells and is separated from the cutis by a layer of the subepidermal extracellular matrix; the basal lamina was not detected. The cutis comprised musculature, two types of mucous and four types of granular gland cells, and pigment cells with four types of granules. In the cutis of juvenile worms, type II granular gland cells and type II mucous cells were not observed. The integument of the caudal cirrus consisted of ciliated and serous gland cells and two intraepidermal lateral nerve cords; the cutis was absent. The compositions of the integument glands of M. bella and the L. ruber species complex are similar, except for the presence of type IV granular gland cells with narrow rod-shaped and lamellated granules exhibiting an alternating dark and light transverse layers and type II mucous cells found only in M. bella.  相似文献

Lipooligosaccharide (LOS) is a complex surface structure that is linked to many pathogenic properties of Acinetobacter baumannii. In A. baumannii, the genes responsible for the synthesis of the outer core (OC) component of the LOS are located between ilvE and aspS. The content of the OC locus is usually variable within a species, and examination of 6 complete and 227 draft A. baumannii genome sequences available in GenBank non-redundant and Whole Genome Shotgun databases revealed nine distinct new types, OCL4-OCL12, in addition to the three known ones. The twelve gene clusters fell into two distinct groups, designated Group A and Group B, based on similarities in the genes present. OCL6 (Group B) was unique in that it included genes for the synthesis of L-Rhamnosep. Genetic exchange of the different configurations between strains has occurred as some OC forms were found in several different sequence types (STs). OCL1 (Group A) was the most widely distributed being present in 18 STs, and OCL6 was found in 16 STs. Variation within clones was also observed, with more than one OC locus type found in the two globally disseminated clones, GC1 and GC2, that include the majority of multiply antibiotic resistant isolates. OCL1 was the most abundant gene cluster in both GC1 and GC2 genomes but GC1 isolates also carried OCL2, OCL3 or OCL5, and OCL3 was also present in GC2. As replacement of the OC locus in the major global clones indicates the presence of sub-lineages, a PCR typing scheme was developed to rapidly distinguish Group A and Group B types, and to distinguish the specific forms found in GC1 and GC2 isolates.  相似文献

The ascospores of 21 species ofEupenicillium were examined for surface ornamentation by means of the scanning electron microscope. Two groups of species could be distinguished: one with, and another without distinct equatorial ridges. The former group was further subdivided into four types according to wall ornamentation: reticulate, ribbed, spinulose, and smooth. Surface ornamentation details may come to range among the most important features to distinguish species that are hardly discernible otherwise.  相似文献

The D. bipectinata complex contains four species which are sympatric over parts of their range. They are morphologically identical and hybridize in no-choice mating situations. They have similar but distinct courtship patterns and males of all species sing two songs, long song early and short song late in courtship. Each species has a unique song profile due to differences in at least one song parameter. This is circumstantial evidence that sounds function to maintain sexual isolation within the complex.  相似文献

The involucres in the Hymenophyllaceae were studied morphologically. Comparisons were made among the various forms of mature involucres found in species throughout the family. Histological and organogenetic observations were made on three forms of involucres exhibited by the bivalvate involucres inHymenophyllum polyanthos andH. badium, the obconic involucres with bilabiate mouths inTrichomanes tosae, and the typically tubular involucres inT. orientale. The involucres of the Hymenophyllaceae consist of two parts, i.e. the basal cup-shaped portion and unistratose indusial flaps. These observations led to the conclusion that there are not two distinct types of involucres supporting a bigeneric system of classification. The sori of the Hymenophyllaceae are morphologically similar to those of the Dicksoniaceae except for the unistratose construction of the indusial flaps.  相似文献
