The mature spermatozoon of Cricocephalus albus is filiform, tapered at both ends and shows the following features: 2 axonemes of different lengths presenting the 9 + “1” trepaxonematan pattern, 2 bundles of parallel cortical microtubules, a mitochondrion and a nucleus. Nevertheless, the particularity of the spermatozoon of C. albus is its anterior extremity with an apical electron-dense material associated with extramembranar ornamentation, a cytoplasmic dorsolateral expansion and spine-like bodies. To our knowledge, such an anterior extremity of the spermatozoon has not previously been described from a species of the superfamily Pronocephaloidea. Our study provides new data on the mature gamete of C. albus in order to improve our understanding of the pronocephaloidean phylogenetic relationships.  相似文献

To add to our understanding of dendrocoelid spermatozoa and to describe additional phylogenetic characters, the ultrastructure of the testis was investigated in the subterranean freshwater planarian Dendrocoelum constrictum. This is the first study investigating spermatogenesis and spermatozoon ultrastructure in a subterranean freshwater planarian species. We found that the basic structure of spermatozoa in D. constrictum is similar to that of other Tricladida that have been studied previously. In fact, D. constrictum spermatozoa possess an elongated nucleus, one giant mitochondrion, and two subterminal flagella with a 9 + ‘1’ pattern. The flagella emerge together from one side of the spermatozoon. However, D. constrictum has some characteristics that have not yet been described for other freshwater planarians. In fact, the number of cortical microtubules reaches the maximum number in the anterior and middle part of region I, and then decrease until they disappear towards the posterior extremity of the spermatozoon. The extreme tip of the anterior region of the spermatozoon exhibits a specific external ornamentation of the plasma membrane.  相似文献

The mature spermatozoon of Anomotaenia quelea exhibits an apical cone of electron-dense material and two helicoidal crest-like bodies. The apical cone near its base is surrounded by a lucent cytoplasm and a spiraled layer of cortical microtubules. The crest-like bodies are of different lengths, spiraled and make an angle of 30–40° to the hypothetical spermatozoon axis. The axoneme is of the 9 + ‘1’ trepaxonematan pattern and is surrounded by a periaxonemal sheath of electron-dense material. The cytoplasm contains in regions III and IV numerous electron-dense granules situated between the periaxonemal sheath and the cortical microtubules. The posterior extremity of the spermatozoon of A. quelea exhibits a nucleus and a disorganized axoneme and cortical microtubules. This type of posterior extremity of the mature spermatozoon has never been described previously in a Dilepididae. Similarly, two crest-like bodies have not been observed before in a dilepidid cestode.  相似文献

This paper describes the ultrastructure of the male gamete of Glossobothrium sp. (Bothriocephalidea: Triaenophoridae). The mature spermatozoon of Glossobothrium sp. is filiform and possesses two axonemes, a single helicoidal crested body, a parallel nucleus, parallel cortical microtubules and granules of glycogen. In Glossobothrium sp. we describe for first time a 200-250 nm thick crest-like body in the Bothriocephalidean. The anterior part of the spermatozoon exhibits a ring of 27 electron-dense cortical microtubules encircling the first axoneme. This structure persists until the appearance of the second axoneme. When the ring of electron-dense cortical microtubules disappears, the spermatozoon exhibits two bundles of thin cortical microtubules. The posterior part of the spermatozoon contains the posterior extremity of the second axoneme, the posterior extremity of the nucleus and few cortical microtubules. Soon nucleus disappears and the axoneme is disorganized. Thus the posterior extremity of the spermatozoon of Glossobothrium sp. exhibits only singlets produced by the disorganization of the doublets of the second axoneme and few cortical microtubules. This type of posterior extremity of the mature spermatozoon has never been described previously in the Triaenophoridae.  相似文献

In Pronocephaloidea, the spermatozoa of only two species have been studied today. Because of this, we present in this work data concerning to a third specie, Pleurogonius truncatus Prudhoe, 1944. The mature spermatozoon of P. truncatus possesses two axonemes with the 9+"1" pattern typical of Trepaxonemata, mitochondrion, nucleus, parallel cortical microtubules, spinelike bodies, cytoplasmic expansion and an external ornamentation of the plasma membrane. A particularity of the spermatozoon of P. truncatus is in the ultrastructure of the anterior spermatozoon extremity with only cortical microtubules and ornamentation of the plasma membrane. This type of anterior extremity has never been described until today in Pronocephaloidea. On the other hand, the ultrastructure of the posterior extremity of the spermatozoon confirms that already described in Pronocephalidae.  相似文献

The mature spermatozoon of Sclerodistomum italicum is filiform, tapered at both ends and shows the following features: 2 axonemes of the 9 + “1” pattern of the Trepaxonemata, mitochondrion, nucleus and parallel cortical microtubules. The specific features of the spermatozoon of S. italicum include the simultaneous presence of two types of extramembranous ornamentations, the presence of short cortical microtubules in the anterior part of the spermatozoon and the presence of only one bundle of cortical microtubules in the median part of the spermatozoon. Thus far these structures are known only in the Hemiuroidea. The presence of filamentous ornamentation in the anterior extremity of the spermatozoon has not previously been described in the Sclerodistomidae. Similar to spermatozoa of other hemiuroideans, S. italicum lack spine-like bodies described in spermatozoa of many digenean taxa. The posterior extremity of the spermatozoon exhibits the same ultrastructural characteristics typical of the Hemiuroidea.  相似文献

Spermiogenesis in the proteocephalidean cestode Barsonella lafoni de Chambrier et al., 2009 shows typical characteristics of the type I spermiogenesis. These include the formation of distal cytoplasmic protrusions forming the differentiation zones, lined by cortical microtubules and containing two centrioles. An electron-dense material is present in the apical region of the differentiation zone during the early stages of spermiogenesis. Each centriole is associated to a striated rootlet, being separated by an intercentriolar body. Two free and unequal flagella originate from the centrioles and develop on the lateral sides of the differentiation zone. A median cytoplasmic process is formed between the flagella. Later these flagella rotate, become parallel to the median cytoplasmic process and finally fuse proximodistally with the latter. It is interesting to note that both flagellar growth and rotation are asynchronous. Later, the nucleus enlarges and penetrates into the spermatid body. Finally, the ring of arching membranes is strangled and the young spermatozoon is detached from the residual cytoplasm. The mature spermatozoon presents two axonemes of the 9 + ‘1’ trepaxonematan pattern, crested body, parallel nucleus and cortical microtubules, and glycogen granules. Thus, it corresponds to the type II spermatozoon, described in almost all Proteocephalidea. The anterior extremity of the gamete is characterized by the presence of an apical cone surrounded by the lateral projections of the crested body. An arc formed by some thick and parallel cortical microtubules appears at the level of the centriole. They surround the centriole and later the first axoneme. This arc of electron-dense microtubules disorganizes when the second axoneme appears, and then two parallel rows of thin cortical microtubules are observed. The posterior extremity of the male gamete exhibits some cortical microtubules. This type of posterior extremity has never been described in proteocephalidean cestodes. The ultrastructural features of the spermatozoon/spermiogenesis of the Proteocephalidea species are analyzed and compared.  相似文献

This study presents the ultrastructure of the mature spermatozoon of Opechona bacillaris, a digenean belonging to the family Lepocreadiidae. The sperm cell of O. bacillaris exhibits the general pattern described in most of the Lepocreadioidea: two axonemes of the 9 + ‘1’ pattern of the Trepaxonemata, mitochondria, a cortical mitochondrion, a nucleus, electron‐dense material in the anterior extremity of the spermatozoon, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane with associated spinelike bodies, and granules of glycogen. However, particularities of O. bacillaris are the simultaneous presence in the anterior extremity of the spermatozoon of the electron‐dense material, a mitochondrion, and the absence of cortical microtubules. In the Lepocreadiidae, we describe for the first time in O. bacillaris spinelike bodies associated with the external ornamentation of the plasma membrane and two mitochondria. The first mitochondrion is moniliform and composed of a mitochondrial cord with joined mitochondrial bulges. The second mitochondrion shows a regular form. The posterior tip of the spermatozoon has only singlets to owing to the disorganization of the second axoneme and granules of glycogen as occurs in Hypocreadium caputvadum, the other studied species of the family Lepocreadiidae.  相似文献

Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate the fine structure of the sperm of the sparid fish Pagellus bogaraveo. The spermatozoon of P. bogaraveo belongs, like that of the other sparid fish, to the teleostean “type I” spermatozoon with the flagellar axis insert perpendicular to the nuclear fossa. It has an ovoidal head, a short, cylindrically shaped midpiece and a long tail region. The nucleus reveals a deep invagination (nuclear fossa), in which the centriolar complex is located, and a satellite nuclear notch shaped like a golf club. The two centrioles are perpendicular to each other and show a conventional “9+0” pattern. The distal centriole is attached to the nuclear envelope by means of basal feet and radial fibers made of electron-dense material. Below the basal plate, plasma membrane pinches in, and the necklace, a specialized connection joining axonemal doublets to the plasma membrane, is visible. The short midpiece houses one mitochondrion. The flagellum is perpendicularly and eccentrically with respect to the nucleus and contains the conventional “9+2” axoneme.  相似文献

Germinoma is a gonadal neoplasm originating from progenitor cells in germinal epithelium. Frequently described in some populations of bivalve molluscs, to our knowledge, germinoma has never been reported in gastropods so far. In this paper we describe the histopathological findings of some atypical cellular masses, originating in the undifferentiated germ cell layer in the male gonads of a limpet (Patella coerulea), whose morphological appearance resembled that of a germ cell tumor. The abnormal, and independent growth with no evidence of maturation of the undifferentiated and atypical germ cells, the limited number of follicles involved (n < 10%) and the absence of tissue invasion, supported a diagnosis of Stage 1 germinoma.  相似文献

The new species Polhillia ignota Boatwr. is described. This species is known only from two collections, one between Vredenburg and Saldanha and the other close to Porterville. The new species is most similar to P. obsoleta, which is known only from a few localities around Worcester, in its narrow, sericeous leaflets and flowers of equal size, but differs in its flattened mature leaves with larger leaflets (up to ± 12 mm long), longer pseudo-peduncles (up to ± 15  mm long), denser inflorescences (with up to four flowers), shorter pedicels (1–2 mm long) and non-auriculate wing- and keel petals.  相似文献

The mature spermatozoon of Aponurus laguncula, a parasite of the unicorn leatherjacket Aluterus monoceros, was studied by transmission electron microscopy. The spermatozoon possesses 2 axonemes of the 9 + “1” trepaxonematan pattern, attachment zones, a nucleus, a mitochondrion, external ornamentation of the plasma membrane and cortical microtubules. The major features are the presence of: 1) external ornamentation in the anterior part of the spermatozoon not associated with cortical microtubules; 2) one mitochondrion; and 3) cortical microtubules arranged as a single field in the ventral side. The maximum number of microtubules is in the nuclear region. The extremities of the axonemes are characterized by the disappearance of the central core and the presence of microtubule doublets or singlets. This study is the first undertaken with a member of the Lecithasteridae and exemplifies the sperm ultrastructure for the superfamily Hemiuroidea.  相似文献

The structures of the solvated iron(II) and iron(III) ions have been studied in solution and solid state by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) in three oxygen donor solvents, water, dimethylsulfoxide (Me2SO), N,N′-dimethylpropyleneurea (DMPU), and one sulfur donor solvent, N,N-dimethylthioformamide (DMTF); these solvents have different coordination and solvation properties. In addition, the structure of hexakis(dimethylsulfoxide)iron(III) perchlorate has been determined crystallographically to support the determination of the corresponding solvate in solution. The hydrated, the dimethylsulfoxide and N,N-dimethylthioformamide solvated iron(II) ions show regular octahedral coordination in both solution and solid state with mean Fe-O, Fe-O, and Fe-S bond distances of 2.10, 2.10, and 2.52 Å, respectively, whereas the N,N′-dimethylpropyleneurea iron(II) solvate is five-coordinated, d(Fe-O) = 2.06 Å. The compounds vary in color from light green (hydrate) to dark orange or red (DMPU). The hydrated iron(III) ion in aqueous solution and the dimethylsulfoxide solvated iron(III) ions in solution and solid state show the expected octahedral coordination, the Fe-O bond distances are 2.00 Å for both, whereas the N,N′-dimethylpropyleneurea iron(III) solvate is found to be five-coordinated with a mean Fe-O bond distance of 1.99 Å. The N,N-dimethylthioformamide solvated iron(III) ion in the solid perchlorate salt is tetrahedrally four-coordinated, the mean Fe-S bond distance is 2.20 Å. Iron(III) is reduced with time to iron(II) in N,N-dimethylthioformamide solution. The compounds vary in color from pale yellow (hydrate) to blackish red (DMPU).  相似文献

The iron(II) compound of formula [Fe(NCS)2(dena)2]n (dena = N,N′-diethylnicotinamide) has been prepared by the reaction between iron(III) thiocyanate and dena in ethanol solution. The complex was characterized by elemental analysis, spectral and magnetic measurements. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods show that the complex, crystallizing in the triclinic space group, undergoes a phase transition between 220 K and 230 K, connected with the doubling of cell volume. Crystal structures at 230 K (1a; HT phase) and 150 K (1b; LT phase) are described and a transition mechanism is discussed. In both phases the compound has an extended chain structure, in which the neutral molecule of N,N′-diethylnicotinamide acts as a bridging ligand binding through pyridine N atom to one centre and through amide O atom to the neighbouring Fe centre. The Fe2+ ion has a slightly distorted trans-octahedral environment with FeO2N4 chromophore, and all Fe-O and Fe-N bonds in the typical for high-spin iron(II) compounds range. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data in the temperature range 1.8-300 K show that iron(II) is high-spin S = 2(5T2g) and as a result effects due to zero-field splitting are anticipated at low temperatures. The IR spectrum suggested the coordination of N,N′-diethylnicotinamide to the central atom of iron(II) as a bridging ligand and NCS group as a monodentate ligand.  相似文献

Dimensions of oospores such as length, width, fossa-breadth, length-to-width ratio and number of striae were considered for morphological identification of the members of Charales. Oospores were collected from natural stands of three species, viz. Chara braunii, C. corallina and C. wallichii in ponds in West Bengal (India). Oospore dimensions (length, width and fossa-breadth) correlated well: though the fossa breadth–length relation of C. braunii showed lower correlation coefficient (r2 = 0.076, p < 0.001), all other five breadth or width–length relationships showed r2 ≥ 0.23, p < 0.001. These bivariate patterns were significantly different among the species (one-way ANCOVA of length–width ratio to fossa-breadth: adjusted means and slopes both p < 0.001), C. braunii and C. corallina has similar length to width ratios, C. wallichii and C. corallina were similar in width, whereas the species differed in breadth and length in the order C. braunii, C. wallichii, and C. corallina.  相似文献

Raoiella indica (Acari: Tenuipalpidae) is a phytophagous mite that recently invaded the Neotropical region. A predatory mite Amblyseius largoensis (Acari: Phytoseiidae) has been found associated with R. indica in Florida. This study evaluated A. largoensis by determining its likelihood of consuming eggs and larvae of R. indica and Tetranychus gloveri (Acari: Tetranychidae) under no-choice and choice conditions. To detect variations in the response of A. largoensis to R. indica, four populations of predators were examined: (1) predators reared exclusively on R. indica in the laboratory for 2 years, (2) predators reared on T. gloveri in the laboratory for 2 months but reared on R. indica for 2 years previously, (3) predators collected from a field infested with R. indica, and (4) predators collected from a field that had never been infested with R. indica. Results of this study suggest that A. largoensis is likely to accept and consume high numbers of R. indica eggs regardless of their previous feeding experience. In contrast, all populations consumed relatively fewer R. indica larvae than the other prey tested. Predators previously exposed to R. indica were more likely to consume R. indica larvae. By contrast, predators not previously exposed to R. indica showed the lowest likelihood of choosing to feed on this prey item. Plasticity in the response of A. largoensis to R. indica larvae could be associated to selection, learning, or a combination of both. The possible implications of the observed differences in terms of biological control of R. indica are discussed.  相似文献

The repellent activity of the essential oil of the catmint plant, Nepeta cataria (Lamiaceae), and the main iridoid compounds (4aS,7S,7aR) and (4aS,7S,7aS)-nepetalactone, was assessed against (i) major Afro-tropical pathogen vector mosquitoes, i.e. the malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae s.s. and the Southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus, using a World Health Organisation (WHO)-approved topical application bioassay (ii) the brown ear tick, Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, using a climbing repellency assay, and (iii) the red poultry mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, using field trapping experiments. Gas chromatography (GC) and coupled GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of two N. cataria chemotypes (A and B) used in the repellency assays showed that (4aS,7S,7aR) and (4aS,7S,7aS)-nepetalactone were present in different proportions, with one of the oils (from chemotype A) being dominated by the (4aS,7S,7aR) isomer (91.95% by GC), and the other oil (from chemotype B) containing the two (4aS,7S,7aR) and (4aS,7S,7aS) isomers in 16.98% and 69.83% (by GC), respectively. The sesquiterpene hydrocarbon (E)-(1R,9S)-caryophyllene was identified as the only other major component in the oils (8.05% and 13.19% by GC, respectively). Using the topical application bioassay, the oils showed high repellent activity (chemotype A RD50 = 0.081 mg cm−2 and chemotype B RD50 = 0.091 mg cm−2) for An. gambiae comparable with the synthetic repellent DEET (RD50 = 0.12 mg cm−2), whilst for Cx. quinquefasciatus, lower repellent activity was recorded (chemotype A RD50 = 0.34 mg cm−2 and chemotype B RD50 = 0.074 mg cm−2). Further repellency testing against An. gambiae using the purified (4aS,7S,7aR) and (4aS,7S,7aS)-nepetalactone isomers revealed overall lower repellent activity, compared to the chemotype A and B oils. Testing of binary mixtures of the (4aS,7S,7aR) and (4aS,7S,7aS) isomers across a range of ratios, but all at the same overall dose (0.1 mg), revealed not only a synergistic effect between the two, but also a surprising ratio-dependent effect, with lower activity for the pure isomers and equivalent or near-equivalent mixtures, but higher activity for non-equivalent ratios. Furthermore, a binary mixture of (4aS,7S,7aR) and (4aS,7S,7aS) isomers, in a ratio equivalent to that found in chemotype B oil, was less repellent than the oil itself, when tested at two doses equivalent to 0.1 and 0.01 mg chemotype B oil. The three-component blend including (E)-(1R,9S)-caryophyllene at the level found in chemotype B oil had the same activity as chemotype B oil. In a tick climbing repellency assay using R. appendiculatus, the oils showed high repellent activity comparable with data for other repellent essential oils (chemotype A RD50 = 0.005 mg and chemotype B RD50 = 0.0012 mg). In field trapping assays with D. gallinae, addition of the chemotype A and B oils, and a combination of the two, to traps pre-conditioned with D. gallinae, all resulted in a significant reduction of D. gallinae trap capture. In summary, these data suggest that although the nepetalactone isomers have the potential to be used in human and livestock protection against major pathogen vectors, intact, i.e. unfractionated, Nepeta spp. oils offer potentially greater protection, due to the presence of both nepetalactone isomers and other components such as (E)-(1R,9S)-caryophyllene.  相似文献

A family of complexes containing the {VO(OMe)}2+ motif with the O,N,S-donor Schiff bases (H2tbhsR) derived from thiobenzhydrazide and 5-substituted salicylaldehydes has been reported. Reactions of [VO(acac)2] with H2tbhsR in methanol provide the complexes having the general formula [VO(OMe)(tbhsR)] (R = H, OMe, Cl, Br and NO2) in 40-53% yields. Microanalytical, various spectroscopic (IR, UV-Vis and NMR) and electrochemical measurements have been used for the characterization of the complexes. All the complexes are redox active and display a near reversible metal centred reduction in the potential range 0.20-0.47 V (versus Ag/AgCl). The trend in these potential values reflects the polar effect of the substituent on the salicylidene fragment of tbhsR2−. The X-ray crystal structures of all the complexes have been determined. In each of the complexes where R = H, OMe, Cl and Br, the metal ion is in a distorted square-pyramidal O3NS coordination sphere assembled by the O,N,S-donor tbhsR2−, the methoxo and the oxo groups. The complex where R = NO2, crystallizes as a hexacoordinated species due to coordination of a methanol O-atom at the vacant sixth site. The bond parameters associated with the metal ions and the physical properties of the complexes are consistent with the +5 oxidation state of the metal ion in all the complexes. Scrutiny of crystal packing reveals dimeric, one-dimensional and two-dimensional self-assembled structures via intermolecular C-H?O and O-H?O interactions. The two-dimensional network contains the cyclic tetramer of methanol.  相似文献
