There was a pronounced decline in activity of young pool-dwelling Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, and brown trout, Salmo trutta, as the water temperatures dropped in the autumn and early winter, and the fish switched from a predominantly diurnal towards a nocturnal activity pattern. Such a switch in activity pattern has previously been observed in young brown trout, but the present study is the first documentation for juvenile Atlantic salmon under natural conditions. Juvenile fish fed actively even when water temperatures were below 0°C, although foraging behaviour at near-freezing temperatures was recorded exclusively during night surveys. This indicates that other proximate factors, in addition to water temperature, affect the activity of young salmon and trout in rivers. Trout kept feeding positions significantly higher above bottom than salmon in August and September, but both species reduced the height above bottom at the onset of winter, possibly due to reduced swimming performance and lowered food availability in the upper part of the water column.  相似文献

We studied egg‐pecking behaviour in males and females of three cowbird species: the shiny cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis), a host generalist brood parasite, the screaming cowbird (M. rufoaxillaris), a host specialist brood parasite, and the bay‐winged cowbird (Agelaioides badius), a non‐parasitic species. We conducted three experiments in which we offered each bird an artificial nest with two plaster eggs and recorded whether egg pecking occurred and the number of pecks on each egg. In expt 1, we tested if there were species and sex differences in egg‐pecking behaviour by offering the birds two spotted eggs of similar pattern. Shiny and screaming cowbirds responded in 40.3% and 44% of the trials, respectively, with females and males presenting similar levels of response. In contrast, bay‐winged cowbirds did not show any response. In expt 2, we tested if shiny cowbirds responded differentially when they faced a choice between one host and one shiny cowbird egg, while in expt 3, we tested if screaming cowbirds responded differentially when they faced a choice between one shiny and one screaming cowbird egg. Shiny cowbirds pecked preferentially host eggs while screaming cowbirds pecked more frequently shiny cowbird eggs. Our results show that egg‐pecking behaviour is present in both sexes of parasitic cowbirds, but not in non‐parasitic birds, and that parasitic cowbirds can discriminate between eggs of their own species and the eggs of their hosts or other brood parasites.  相似文献

Predation experiments in tanks with the two-banded bream fish Diplodus vulgaris and the sandhopper Talitrus saltator demonstrated that: 1. some specific behaviours; and 2. crypsis of the back have an antipredator function. They reduced by one-half the predatory attacks in the water, under artificial conditions.  相似文献

The effect of predation threat on behaviour and habitat use by brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) juveniles were studied in four indoor and six outdoor experimental channels. Northern pike (Esox lucius L.) was used as a predator. Brown trout were more active during the night compared to day, but in the presence of pike the increase in activity was less than in treatments without predator. Aggressive interactions between trout were higher during the day when pike was absent. In the presence of pike trout tended to use more coarse substrate classes as subdominant habitat suggesting increased use of cover and also higher or lower water depths. Our results increase knowledge of the effects of predation threat on habitat selection and behaviour by brown trout.  相似文献

Dimensionless numbers and life history variation in Brown Trout   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary Dimensionless numbers, made up from components of life history as defined by growth, mortality and maturation, may provide fresh insights into life history evolution. Most studies have previously shown that these numbers are more or less constants within taxa. The variation between taxa may clarify the evolution of different life histories. We examine the variation in three dimensionless numbers using data from 29 populations of Brown TroutSalmo trutta from Norway, and find that the dimensionless numbers are not constants for the Brown Trout populations. We find that the relationship betweenK of the von Bertalanffy growth equation and the mortality rate (M) increased with increasing growth rate. Also, relative length at maturity (L /L inf) increased with increasing asymptotic length (L inf). We suggest that more such data should be collected from a large number of species and taxonomic groups, to allow a more detailed assessment of why these dimensionless numbers appear to be constants in some taxa and not in others.  相似文献

In a field experiment, we studied how levels of aggression in males and females in established pairs of the Banggai cardinalfish were influenced by the sex of an experimentally introduced individual larger and more attractive than its resident counterpart. Contrary to previous studies on other cardinalfish species, and contrary to expectations in a sex role reversed species, the male was the main aggressor towards an intruder. Moreover, residents were more aggressive towards an intruder of the same sex as themselves. Furthermore, even though females often courted introduced, larger males, no intruder managed to take over the partnership of any resident. We suggest that our findings imply relatively equal sex roles in the Banggai cardinalfish and we discuss the evolution of sex specific territory defence and its significance in the Banggai cardinalfish as well as the implications of such behaviour in the interpretations of sex roles in general.  相似文献

In field studies between 2002 and 2004 in southern Brazil, we recorded antipredatory behaviors (N=9) of brown howlers (Alouatta guariba clamitans) under attack by the black hawk-eagle (Spizaetus tyrannus). We observed 2 types of behavioral responses: the descent to the understory followed by the dispersion of the group and immobility and silence. Brown howlers displayed behaviors specific to evading aerial predators, which are similar to the ones in other Neotropical primates. The article is contribution number 1578 of Departamento de Zoologia, Universidade Federal do Paraná  相似文献

Most anurans of the species-rich community of the Comoé National Park (Ivory Coast) use ephemeral savannah ponds to spawn. Owing to the great risk of desiccation and the large number of predators, the mortality for tadpoles is very high in these ponds. Therefore, colonization of other spawning habitats might be highly advantageous. Such spawning sites are presented by the Comoé river, which is characterized by frequent and unpredictable changes of the water level. Only Bufo maculatus (Anura: Bufonidae) and one other bufonid species breed in small and shallow inlets and puddles created by the rising and falling of the predator-rich Comoé river. We observed that predatory fish advanced to the spawning sites of the toads, when the water level rose. If the toad larvae were attacked by these predators, they formed dense aggregations of up to several thousand individuals. These aggregations were maintained for longer periods on one place at the river's edge where they are inaccessible to the larger predators. In field experiments we ascertained that this aggregation behaviour in tadpoles was caused by a combination of two stimuli: first, a chemical cue from injured tadpoles and second, a mechanical stimulus caused by rapid movements of aquatic predators. Initial trials indicated that tadpoles aggregating at the bank were, however, disadvantaged compared with free-swimming larvae in having slower growth and an increased risk of desiccation. This is presumably why aggregations broke up within 24 h after the predators had left these puddles, as the water level fell. At this point these tadpoles either spread out or formed loose swarms near the bottom of the puddles. This swarming behaviour differed considerably from that induced by aquatic predators.  相似文献

Predator diet is known to influence antipredator behaviour in prey. Yet, it is not clear how antipredator behaviour is affected by diet changes of the predator. We studied the effect of previous and present diet of a predatory mite Typhlodromips swirskii on the antipredator response of its prey, the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. An earlier study showed that adult female whiteflies that had experienced predators, had learned to avoid ovipositing on plants with predators whose previous and present diet consisted of whitefly eggs and immatures. Here, we investigate whether adult whiteflies also avoid plants with predators whose present and/or previous diet consisted of a non-whitefly food source. Adult whiteflies were found not to avoid plants with predators whose present diet consisted of pollen and whose previous diet had consisted of either pollen or whitefly eggs and larvae. They did avoid plants with predators whose present diet consisted of whiteflies and whose previous diet had consisted of pollen, but to a lesser extent than when previous and present diet consisted of whiteflies. In a choice experiment, whiteflies discriminated between plants with predators whose present diet consisted of whiteflies, but that differed in previous diet. Our results show that both previous and present diets of predators are important in eliciting antipredator behaviour.  相似文献

(1) The individuals in the densely populated stock of brown trout, Salmo trutta L., living in Lake Lane and Stranda River, are small, mature at an early age, and have a relatively short life span. Such a demographic strategy appears favourable for populations having a large, but physically unstable spawning and nursery area, intense competition for food, and little vertebrate predation except for human exploitation. (2) For females, the age of sexual maturation appears largely dependent on growth-rate, size, and survival-rate of the fish. Males do not appear to have the advantage of a corresponding large body size. They mature when smaller and at more varying ages than the females, although the two sexes have almost identical growth-rates. (3) Sexually mature fish have higher condition coefficients than immature ones, which is probably an adaptation to ensure gonadal development and enhance the prospect of reproductive success. (4) Mortality appears to be largely dependent on the age when the fish achieve sexual maturation. Most individuals seem to die after their first spawning season. Females show a delay of one year in their sexual maturation relative to males. This adaptation gives protection to the females.  相似文献

Synopsis Stocking of fish from other populations has been commonly employed for enhancement of wild brown trout, Salmo trutta, populations in north Spain. Young hatchery reared brown trout of central European origin were introduced into some Asturian rivers every year since 1984. Based on variation at the isozyme locus LDH-C1* and at the microsatellite locus BFRO 002, two genetic markers race-specific in Salmo trutta, we detected introgression of foreign genomes into native gene pools in some Spanish trout populations where only pure native individuals were present 10 years ago. We strongly suggest development of alternative management policies for conservation of Spanish natural brown trout populations without endangering the traditional recreational fisheries. Jorge I. The detection of vitellogenin, a yolk precursor protein, may serve as a biomarker for exposure to environmental oestrogens as its induction by xenobiotic oestrogens in the immature and male fish has been reported repeatedly. In the present work, juvenile brown trout were injected with oestradiol (5 g g–1 body weight oestradiol benzoate) in order to assess the induction and organ distribution of vitellogenin by means of immunohistochemistry. In addition, brown trout collected from Swiss rivers were analysed. Vitellogenin was detected in the oestradiol-injected juvenile trout but not in uninjected controls. The presence of vitellogenin was also demonstrated in a male and an immature feral brown trout from one of two locations downstream of three sewage treatment plants. In contrast, no positive staining was found in livers of trout upstream of the respective plants. The results demonstrate the suitability of immunohistochemistry for monitoring feral fish fo r the presence of vitellogenin production.  相似文献

I studied inter- and intraspecific competition in two hatchery stocks: landlocked salmon with long-hatchery background and a heterogenic brown trout stock. These species are potential competitors in the natural environment when landlocked salmon is being restored to wild by stocking hatchery juveniles. Behavioural responses were studied in four indoor laboratory flumes (400 cm long and 37 cm wide) and habitat use in six semi-natural outdoor streams (26 m long and 1.5 m long). Video recordings were used to monitor fish behaviour and electrofishing for fish positioning in the outdoor channels. The study design included five treatments: two densities of brown trout and salmon in solitary and both species together. The results of the study demonstrated that juvenile brown trout changed their behaviour in laboratory streams in response to presence of the landlocked salmon and the density of the conspecifics also tended to alter the habitat use by brown trout in semi-natural streams. Landlocked salmon juveniles showed no response to treatments. I conclude that possible poor adaptive ability to conditions outside hatchery by the hatchery salmon together and more competitive brown trout stocks may limit the success of management action in restoring landlocked salmon back to their natural streams of stocking.  相似文献

Prey fishes, like many organisms under fluctuating predation threat, rely on multiple sources of information to accurately gauge current risk. This includes the use of chemical cues such as alarm cues from damaged conspecifics or familiar heterospecifics, as well as the odour of known predators. While each fish is well equipped with its own array of sensory abilities, they should also be alert to the behaviours of nearby neighbours who may have information they lack. In the present study, we tested the ability of fathead minnows to use social cues in combination with the odour of damaged conspecifics and heterospecifics to mediate the assessment of predation risk. Specifically, we tested whether the presence of a shoal of conspecifics or familiar heterospecifics would significantly change a minnow's antipredator behaviour when exposed to the odour of a damage‐release cue from a conspecific or ecologically similar heterospecific. The results of our study showed a significant interaction between the damage‐release cues to which the minnows were exposed and the presence/absence of shoalmates. These findings have important implications for the design of future investigations of antipredator responses because most studies of group‐living prey have been conducted on solitary subjects.  相似文献

The development of the olfactory rosette in parr, smolt and adult sea trout is investigated by means of different fixation and staining techniques. The rosette consists of primary laminae which are folded in four types of secondary laminae. These are here called initial, cuneiform, filiform and fungiform laminae. At least initially secondary folding seems to be an interplay between a blood capillary and the sensory epithelium external to it. The ecological adaptations of folded olfactory organs are discussed.  相似文献

In this study, we assessed whether juvenile brown trout are able to discriminate between, and swim towards, water containing unrelated conspecifics and blank stream water. In a second stage we investigated the behavioural response to sibling-scented vs. nonsibling conspecific-scented water, and how the social environment could affect growth. All the six families (full sibs) tested showed an overall preference to blank water instead of water scented by unfamiliar fish of similar age and size. This result reveals that juvenile brown trout are able to detect chemical water components released by conspecifics, and show a biased behaviour based on this ability. When trout were given the choice between water scented by sibs and unfamiliar nonsibs, results were variable, some families spent more time in the sibling-scented water channel (only significant for one of six families) while others showed the opposite trend. Large within-family variation was also observed in the responses of individual fish towards water scented by siblings and nonsiblings. When fish from three of the families were reared with either siblings or nonsiblings, we obtained results that were only partially consistent with the hypothesis that fish growth could be enhanced in the preferred social environment (which had been predicted from the results of the choice tests).  相似文献
