Flagellar length regulation provides a simple model system for addressing the general problem of organelle size control. Based on a systems-level analysis of flagellar dynamics, we have proposed a mechanism for flagellar length control in which length is set by the balance of continuous flagellar assembly and disassembly. The model proposes that the assembly rate is length dependent due to the inherent length dependence of intraflagellar transport, whereas disassembly is length independent, such that the two rates can only reach a balance point at a single length. In this report, we test this theoretical model by using three different measurements: 1) the quantity of intraflagellar transport machinery as a function of length, 2) the variation of flagellar length as a function of flagellar number, and 3) the rate of flagellar growth as a function of length. We find that the quantity of intraflagellar transport machinery is independent of length, that flagellar length is a decreasing function of flagellar number, and that flagellar growth rate in regenerating flagella depends on length and not on the time since regeneration began. These results are consistent with the balance-point model for length control. The three strategies used here are not limited to flagella and can in principle be adapted to probe size control systems for any organelle.  相似文献

2018年6—8月,测量采自云南省昆明市金殿水库后山的71只(47♂,24♀)大蹼铃蟾Bombina maxima成体的体长、头长、头宽等15项形态特征指标并检验该物种的两性异形。结果表明:雄性平均体长为53.54 mm±1.14 mm,雌性平均体长为52.74 mm±1.45 mm,雄性与雌性平均体长比为1.015,两性异性指数为0.01;大蹼铃蟾的体长、体质量与性别之间的差异无统计学意义;除了雌性的眼间距外,其余13项形态特征与体长均有极显著相关性;以体长为协变量的协方差分析结果显示,大蹼铃蟾的头长、吻长、前臂宽、腿或后肢全长、胫长、胫宽和跗足长在两性间的差异有高度统计学意义;雄性的这7项形态特征随体长的生长速率大于雌性。性选择假说能解释大蹼铃蟾的两性异形现象。  相似文献

动物中普遍存在雌雄个体身体大小的性二态现象。了解近缘种之间身体大小性二态现象的差异,可为深入探讨身体大小性二态现象的潜在驱动机制提供证据。国外对欧亚大山雀(Parus major)的研究发现,其喙长、跗跖长、翅长等 6 项身体大小指标存在着明显的性二态,且喙长的性二态存在季节间差异。大山雀(P. cinereus)曾被作为欧亚大山雀的一个亚种,其形态和行为与欧亚大山雀存在着诸多相似之处。为探讨大山雀是否也存在身体大小性二态及季节性差异,本研究分析了 2018 至 2020 年间在河南董寨国家级自然保护区捕捉的 226 只(雌性 96 只和雄性 130 只)大山雀的喙长、头喙长、跗跖长、翅长、尾长和体长这 6 项体征指标的两性差异及其季节变化。结果显示,大山雀上述 6 项身体大小指标均存在不同程度的性二态现象,且雄性个体仅喙长与雌性的差异不显著,其余 5 项指标均显著大于雌性。此外,身体大小指标的两性差异不随季节显著变化,但两性的跗跖长在秋季均显著短于冬季和繁殖季,尾长在繁殖季均显著长于秋季和冬季。上述结果表明,大山雀身体大小的性二态及其季节性差异与欧亚大山雀并不完全相似。无论其身体大小存在性二态和季节变化的原因,还是其与欧亚大山雀在身体大小性二态模式上的差别,都有待今后进一步的研究。  相似文献

Rat gastrocnemius medialis (GM) and semimembranosus (SM) muscles have a very different morphology. GM is a very pennate muscle, combining relatively short muscle fibre length with sizable fibre angles and long muscle and aponeurosis lengths. SM is a more parallel-fibred muscle, combining a relatively long fibre length with a small fibre angle and short aponeurosis length. The mechanisms of fibre shortening as well as angle increase are operational in GM as well as SM. However, as a consequence of isometric contraction, changes of fibre length and angle are greater for GM than for SM at any relative muscle length. These differences are particularly notable at short muscle lengths: at 80% of optimum muscle length, fibre length changes of approximately 30% are coupled to fibre angle changes of 15 degrees in GM, while for SM these changes are 4% and 0.6 degrees, respectively. A considerable difference was found for normalized active slack muscle length (GM approximately 80 and SM approximately 45%). This is explained by differences of degree of pennation as well as factors related to differences found for estimated fibre length-force characteristics. Estimated normalized active fibre slack length was considerably smaller for SM than for GM (approximately 40 and 60%, respectively). The most likely explanation of these findings are differences of distribution of optimum fibre lengths, possibly in combination with differences of myofilament lengths and/or fibre length distributions.  相似文献

This study investigated length–weight and length–length relationships of three Clupeonella species: C. caspia, C. engrauliformis and C. grimmi captured in the southern Caspian Sea, Iran. Using a lantern net, 206 specimens were collected from July to August 2016. Presented for two of the species are the length–weight and the length–length relationships as well as the first reference on length–weight and length–length relationships for C. caspia in its distribution range.  相似文献

【目的】为明确麦长管蚜Sitobion avenae (Fabricius)虫龄鉴别特征, 达到快速鉴别的目的。【方法】在成像观察的基础上, 测定无翅型和有翅型个体不同虫龄的体长、 体宽、 头壳宽、 触角长、 腹管长和后足胫节长6项指标。【结果】麦长管蚜不同翅型个体的体长、 体宽、 头壳宽、 触角长、 腹管长和后足胫节长在虫龄间均存在显著差异, 其中体长、 体宽、 头壳宽和触角长在相邻虫龄之间重叠程度大, 后足胫节长的重叠百分比极小或无重叠; 除有翅型个体4龄若蚜和成蚜之间存在13.93%的重叠外, 腹管长在不同翅型的其他相邻虫龄之间重叠百分比均极小或无重叠, 说明后足胫节长和腹管长可作为虫龄鉴定的主要特征。翅、 触角和尾片的其他外部形态特征在虫龄间也存在一定差异: 3-4龄有翅型若蚜和成蚜虫个体前胸的膨大程度及其翅的长度明显大于同一龄期的无翅型个体, 可用于蚜虫翅型的分辨以及3-4龄有翅若蚜和成蚜的鉴别; 麦长管蚜1和2龄若蚜触角均为5节, 3-4龄若蚜和成蚜的触角均为6节; 同时, 除了成蚜具有完整的尾片外, 1-4龄若蚜尾片均不发达, 说明触角的节数和尾片的发达程度可作为麦长管蚜不同龄期形态鉴别的辅助特征。【结论】以腹管和后足胫节作为麦长管蚜虫龄鉴别的主要特征, 配合其他辅助特征, 如翅的大小、 触角的节数以及尾片的发达程度等, 可达到快速鉴别不同翅型不同龄期蚜虫的目的。  相似文献

Variation in singing behaviour between males can involve fixed differences such as the song type composition of repertoires, as well as more flexible effects such as matched counter-singing (Krebs & Kroodsma, 1980; Section III. 4), differences in bout length (the number of songs in a period of song) and changes in strophe length. Short-term strophe length changes seem to be related to the willingness and ability of males to respond strongly to playback. Whether this is because strophe length indicates motivation or the degree of exhaustion of the neuromuscular song-production system, or both, is currently unclear.  相似文献

Contraction of individual sarcomeres within the living mite Tarsonemus sp. was observed by polarized light microscopy. In unflattened animals the usual range of contraction was such that the minimum sarcomere length approximated the length of the A region, and the maximum sarcomere length was about twice the length of the A region. The central sarcomeres of the dorsal metapodosomal muscles were observed in detail. The A band length increased slightly with increasing sarcomere length since the regression of I region length on sarcomere length had an average slope of 0.91. When the A band length in a sarcomere which was shortening was compared with the length when the same sarcomere lengthened, no significant difference was seen. The A band of each sarcomere seemed to act as a not too rigid limit to further shortening; this agreed with the reversible shortening of a muscle in which the A band had been experimentally shortened. An H region was visible at long sarcomere lengths and was not visible at short sarcomere lengths, even when the muscle was actively shortening. The rate of change of H region length with sarcomere length suggested that I filament length may increase as sarcomere length increases. Despite this effect and the small increase in A length with sarcomere length, the results are considered to be consistent with a model in which shortening occurs by the relative movement of A and I filaments, with little or no change in length of either set of filaments. Sarcomere shortening was clearly associated with an increase in the retardation of the A region.  相似文献

Skull length is the measurement most commonly used as a standard against which other aspects of cranial morphology are compared to derive an index of relative size or proportions. However, skull length is composed of two different functional components, facial skull and cerebral skull, which vary independently and have different scaling relationships with body size. An analysis of carnivore skull shape with measurements standardized against basicranium length produced very different results than an analysis using skull length as the standard. For example, expressions of relative size of cranial measurements were reduced by 13% in mustelids and increased by 20% in canids, reflecting removal of jaw length (short in mustelids and long in canids) from the comparative standard (basicranial axis length). Cranial measurements scale with higher allometric exponents against basicranial axis length than against skull length.  相似文献

We examined foreleg length and body size variation in two species of oil-collecting bees (Rediviva; Melittidae) in southern Africa. Oil-collecting bees harvest oil from host flowers by rubbing their forelegs against oil-secreting trichomes. Significant differences in foreleg length occur among populations of both species. Rediviva “pallidula” populations vary significantly in mean foreleg length (11.34 ± 0.42 mm to 12.67 ± 0.36 mm), but not in body length (10.59 ± 0.74 to 10.80 ± 0.64), and foreleg length and body size are not significantly correlated. Instead, foreleg variation appears to be a function of host plant spur length. Ninety-two percent of the variance in foreleg length of R. “pallidula” is explained by mean Diascia spur length. Rediviva rufocincta populations vary significantly in mean foreleg length (10.12 ± 0.70 mm to 12.34 ± 0.68 mm) and in body length (9.03 ± 0.26 mm to 10.56 ± 0.24 mm). Foreleg length scales allometrically with body size in this species as 90.5% of the variance in foreleg length can be explained as a function of body length. Body size appears to be constrained by the morphology of the oil-secreting host plant. Both bees collect floral oil with specially modified setae on the tarsi of their forelegs. The length of the disti- + mediotarsus (refered to here as “tarsus”) in relation to the entire foreleg is shorter in R. rufocincta and does not increase as rapidly with increasing foreleg length as for R. “pallidula.” These differences in variation can be attributed to differences in position of oil within the flowers of the respective host plants. Rediviva “pallidula” collects oil from Diascia species that have the oil deeply situated in narrow floral spurs of varying length, while R. rufocincta collects oil from the broadly saccate flowers of Bowkeria verticillata and B. citrina.  相似文献

Relative finger lengths, especially the second-to-fourth finger length ratio, have been proposed as useful markers for prenatal testosterone action. This claim partly depends on an association of relative finger lengths in adults with related sex differences in children and infants. This paper reports the results of a study using serial radiographs to test for both sex differences in the fingers of infants and children and for a relationship between sex differences in the children and infant finger and adult finger length ratios. This is the first study using long-term serial data to evaluate the validity of finger length ratios as markers. We found not only that sex differences in finger length ratios arise prior to puberty, but that sex differences in the fingers of children are highly correlated with adult finger length ratios. Our results strongly encourage the further use of finger length ratios as markers of perinatal testosterone action.  相似文献

Normal cilia length and motility are critical for proper cellular function. Prior studies of the regulation of ciliary structure and length have primarily focused on the intraflagellar transport machinery and motor proteins required for ciliary assembly and disassembly. However, several mutants with abnormal length flagella highlight the importance of signaling proteins as well. In this study, an unbiased chemical screen was performed to uncover signaling pathways that are critical for ciliogenesis and length regulation using flagella of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii as a model. The annotated Sigma LOPAC1280 chemical library was screened for effects on flagellar length, motility, and severing as well as cell viability. Assay data were clustered to identify pathways regulating flagella. The most frequent target found to be involved in flagellar length regulation was the family of dopamine binding G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). In mammalian cells, cilium length could indeed be altered with expression of the dopamine D1 receptor. Our screen thus reveals signaling pathways that are potentially critical for ciliary formation, resorption, and length maintenance, which represent candidate targets for therapeutic intervention of disorders involving ciliary malformation and malfunction.  相似文献

Two new genera and species from Kenyan tidal areas,Polkepsilonema mombasae gen. et sp.n. andPternepsilonema servaesae gen. et sp.n., are described. Both are characterized by the presence of at least fourteen subcephalic setae and by thick thorns on the ventral body region of males. In the first genus, eight to ten subcephalic setae are situated anterior to the amphid, and the ambulatory setae are bisinuous. Length–weight and length–length relationships are presented for three species of butterflyfish endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. From specimens collected within the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (PMNM), the weight–length relationships were determined for Chaetodon fremblii as W  = 0.029SL3.17, Chaetodon miliaris as W  = 0.042 SL3.00, and Chaetodon multicinctus as W  = 0.029SL3.19 where weight, W , is reported in grams and standard length, SL, in centimeters. We determined the effects of increasing the length of the ferret trachealis muscle on smooth muscle membrane potentials recorded on successive impalements by microelectrodes. The preparation included the paratracheal ganglion nerve plexus as well as trachealis muscle. With sustained increases in muscle length over the range 0.5-0.8 to 1.2 maximal length (Lmax), depolarization occurred, which was related to the amplitude of the length increase. Membrane depolarizations were also evoked after stretching to lengths approximately 1.1 Lmax and returning to the control length. Stretch-induced membrane depolarizations developed after the stretch maneuver was complete; were slowly reversible; were not influenced by tetrodotoxin or atropine; were related to stretch rather than to maintained increase in muscle length; were not transmitted to adjacent nonstretched segments of the trachea; and were often associated with slow waves which appear to be secondary to membrane depolarization rather than stretch per se.  相似文献

To account for cytoskeleton remodeling as well as smooth muscle length adaptation, here we represent the cytoskeleton as a two-dimensional network of links (contractile filaments or stress fibers) that connect nodes (dense plaques or focal adhesions). The network evolves in continuous turnover with probabilities of link formation and dissolution. The probability of link formation increases with the available fraction of contractile units, increases with the degree of network activation, and decreases with increasing distance between nodes, d, as 1/d(s), where s controls the distribution of link lengths. The probability of link dissolution decays with time to mimic progressive cytoskeleton stabilization. We computed network force (F) as the vector summation of link forces exerted at all nodes, unloaded shortening velocity (V) as being proportional to the average link length, and network compliance (C) as the change in network length per change in elastic force. Imposed deformation caused F to decrease transiently and then recover dynamically; recovery ability decreased with increasing time after activation, mimicking observed biological behavior. Isometric contractions showed small sensitivity of F to network length, thus maintaining high force over a wide range of lengths; V and C increased with increasing length. In these behaviors, link length regulation, as described by the parameter s, was found to be crucial. Concerning length adaptation, all phenomena reported thus far in the literature were captured by this extremely simple network model.  相似文献

The aggregation properties of column-purified rabbit skeletal myosin at pH 7.0 were investigated as functions of ionic strength, protein concentration, and time. Filaments prepared by dialysis exhibited the same average length and population distribution at 0.10 and 0.15 M KCl at protein concentrations greater than 0.10 mg/ml; similar results were obtained at .0.20 M KCl, although average filament length was approximately 0.5 micrometer shorter. Once formed, these length distributions remained virtually unchanged over an 8-d period. At and below 0.10 mg/ml, average filament length decreased as a function of protein concentration; filaments prepared from an initial concentration of 0.02 mg/ml were half the length of those prepared at 0.2 mg/ml. Filaments prepared by dilution exhibited a sharp increase in average length as the time-course increased up to 40 s, then altered only slightly over a further period of 4 min. Addition of C-protein in a molar ratio of 1-3.3 myosin molecules affected most of these results. Average filament length was affected neither by ionic strength nor by initial protein concentration down to 0.04 mg/ml or over an 8-d period. Filaments formed by dilution in the presence of C-protein exhibited a constant average length and hypersharp length distribution over variable time courses up to 7 min. It is possible that C-protein acts to stabilize the antiparallel intermediate during filamentogenesis, and may also affect subunit addition to this nucleus.  相似文献
