The physiological ecology of Prasiola stipitata was examined in situ from two supralittoral sites in the Bay of Fundy (Nova Scotian, Canada) during November 2011, when the population was undergoing major expansion. Photosynthetic parameters (effective quantum yield, ΦPSII, maximum quantum yield, Fv/Fm, and relative electron transport rate, rETR) were evaluated using chlorophyll fluorescence of PSII. A largely shaded and continuously moist population showed no change in ΦPSII from one hour after sunrise to sunset in which natural irradiance varied between 3 and 300 μmol photons m?2 s?1. High irradiance (up to 1800 μmol photons m?2 s?1) had no apparent negative impacts on either quantum yield or rETR, but high desiccation in the field reduced quantum yield to almost zero. When thalli were brought into the laboratory, no change in Fv/Fm was observed up to 60% dehydration; however, there was a steep decline in Fv/Fm between 60% and 85% dehydration. Thalli showed complete recovery of Fv/Fm within one hour of reimmersion in seawater after 2 days of desiccation. After 15 days of desiccation full recovery required 24 h and after 30 days of desiccation thalli showed only partial recovery. These observations confirm the adaptation to photosynthesis in high irradiances and the rapid recovery following extreme desiccation observed in other Prasiola species.  相似文献

In view of predicted climatic changes for the Mediterranean region, study of high temperature and drought impacts on physiological responses of endangered species regains relevance. In this context, micropropagated plants of Tuberaria major, a critically endangered species, endemic of Algarve, were transferred to a controlled-environment cabinet with day/night temperatures set at 25/18°C (Reference) or 32/21°C (HT). After 15 days of HT acclimation, some plants were subjected to progressive drought followed by rewatering. The enhancement of temperature alone did not affect water relations and photosynthetic rates (P N) but the stomatal conductance (g s) exhibited a 3-fold increase in comparison with reference plants. The maximum quantum yield of photosystem (PS) II (Fv/Fm), the effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII), carotenoid (Car) and anthocyanin content enhanced, whereas the quantum yields of regulated (ΦNPQ) and nonregulated (ΦNO) energy dissipation decreased. Drought combined with HT reduced predawn leaf water potential to values of about ?1.3 MPa, which had adverse effects on gas exchange and PSII activity. Values of P N and g s were 71 and 79% lower than those of HT plants. An impairment of photochemical activity was also observed: the decrease in ΦPSII and the increase of ΦNPQ. However, an irreversible photoinhibitory damage had not occurred. Carotenoid and anthocyanin content remained elevated and soluble sugars (SS) increased twice, whereas proline and MDA accumulation was not detected. On the first 24 h after water-stress relief, g s, P N, ΦPSII, and ΦNPQ did not recover, but SS returned to the reference level. Overall, T. major acquired an adequate capacity for a protection against the development of oxidative stress during drought and water recovery under HT. These findings suggest that T. major is prepared to deal with predicted climate changes.  相似文献

Winter cold limits temperate plant performance, as does summer water stress in drought‐prone ecosystems. The relative impact of seasonal extremes on plant performance has received considerable attention for individual systems. An integrated study compiling the existing literature was needed to identify overall trends. First, we conducted a meta‐analysis of the impacts of summer and winter on ecophysiology for three woody plant functional types (winter deciduous angiosperms, evergreen angiosperms and conifers), including data for 210 records from 75 studies of ecosystems with and without summer drought across the temperate zone. Second, we tested predictions by conducting a case study in a drought‐prone Mediterranean ecosystem subject to winter freezing. As indicators of physiological response of leaves and xylem to seasonal stress, we focused on stomatal conductance (gs), percent loss of stem xylem hydraulic conductivity (PLC) and photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm). Our meta‐analysis showed that in ecosystems without summer drought, gs was higher during summer than winter. By contrast, in drought‐prone ecosystems many species maintained open stomata during winter, with potential strong consequences for plant carbon gain over the year. Further, PLC tended to increase and Fv/Fm to decrease from summer to winter for most functional types and ecosystems due to low temperatures. Overall, deciduous angiosperms were most sensitive to climatic stress. Leaf gas exchange and stem xylem hydraulics showed a coordinated seasonal response at ecosystems without summer drought. In our Mediterranean site subjected to winter freezing the species showed similar responses to those typically found for ecosystems without summer drought. We conclude that winter stress is most extreme for systems without summer drought and systems with summer drought and winter freezing, and less extreme for drought‐prone systems without freezing. In all cases the evergreen species show less pronounced seasonal responses in both leaves and stems than deciduous species.  相似文献

Eucalyptus plantations are among the most productive forest stands in Portugal and Spain, being mostly used for pulp production and, more recently, as an energy crop. However, the region's Mediterranean climate, with characteristic severe summer drought, negatively affects eucalypt growth and increases mortality. Although the physiological response to water shortage is well characterized for this species, evidence about the plants' recovery ability remains scarce. In order to assess the physiological and biochemical response of Eucalyptus globulus during the recovery phase, two genotypes (AL‐18 and AL‐10) were submitted to a 3‐week water stress period at two different intensities (18 and 25% of field capacity), followed by 1 week of rewatering. Recovery was assessed 1 day and 1 week after rehydration. Drought reduced height, biomass, water potential, NPQ and gas exchange in both genotypes. Contrarily, the levels of pigments, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (Fv/Fm and φPSII), MDA and ABA increased. During recovery, the physiological and biochemical profile of stressed plants showed a similar trend: they experienced reversion of altered traits (MDA, ABA, E, gs, pigments), while other parameters did not recover (φPSII, NPQ). Furthermore, an overcompensation of CO2 assimilation was achieved 1 week after rehydration, which was accompanied by greater growth and re‐establishment of oxidative balance. Both genotypes were tolerant to the tested conditions, although clonal differences were found. AL‐10 was more productive and showed a more rapid and dynamic response to rehydration (namely in carotenoid content, φPSII and NPQ) compared to clone AL‐18.  相似文献

We examined the effect of light emitting diode (LED) lighting in greenhouse facilities on growth, chlorophyll fluorescence and pigmentation in Phalaenopsis ‘Vivien’ and ‘Purple Star’ under purpose‐built LED arrays yielding c. 200 µmol m?2 s?1 at plant height for 14 h per day and 24/18°C day/night temperature, respectively, from January to April 2013. The light treatments were (1) 40% blue in 60% red (40% B/R), (2) 0% blue in 100% red (0% B/R) and (3) white LEDs with 32% blue in white (32% B/W, control), with background daylight under shade screens. The plants were harvested twice for leaf growth and pigmentation. There was no clear pattern in the spectral effect on growth since the order of leaf size differed between harvests in March and April. Fv/Fm was in the range of 0.52–0.72, but overall slightly higher in the control, which indicated a permanent downregulation of PSII in the colored treatments. The fluorescence quenching showed no acclimation to color in ‘Purple Star’, while ‘Vivien’ had lower ETR and higher NPQ in the 40% B/R, resembling low light acclimation. The pigmentation showed corresponding spectral response with increasing concentration of lutein while increasing the fraction of blue light, which increased the light absorption in the green/yellow part of the spectrum. The permanent downregulation of PSII moved a substantial part of the thermal dissipation from the light regulated NPQ to non‐regulated energy losses estimated by ΦNPQ and ΦNO and the difference found in the balance between ΦPSII and ΦNPQ in ‘Vivien’ disappeared when ΦNO was included in the thermal dissipation.  相似文献

The effects of irradiance, temperature, thermal‐ and chilling‐light sensitivities on the photosynthesis of a temperate alga, Sargassum macrocarpum (Fucales) were determined by a pulse amplitude modulation (PAM)‐chlorophyll fluorometer and dissolved oxygen sensors. Oxygenic photosynthesis–irradiance curves at 8, 20, and 28°C revealed that the maximum net photosynthetic rates (NP max) and saturation irradiance were highest at 28°C, and lowest at 8°C. Gross photosynthesis and dark respiration determined over a range of temperatures (8–36°C) at 300 μmol photons m?2 s?1 revealed that the maximum gross photosynthetic rate (GPmax) occurred at 27.8°C, which is consistent with the highest seawater temperature in the southern distributional limit of this species in Japan. Additionally, the maximum quantum yields of photosystem II (F v/F m) during the 72‐h temperature exposures were stable at 8–28°C, but suddenly dropped to zero at higher temperatures, indicative of PSII deactivation. Continuous exposure (12 h) to irradiance of 200 (low) and 1000 (high) μmol photons m?2 s?1 at 8, 20, and 28°C revealed greater declines in their effective quantum yields (Φ PSII) under high irradiance. While Φ PSII under low irradiance were very similar with the initial F v/F m under 20 and 28°C, values rapidly decreased with exposure duration at 8°C. At this temperature, F v/F m did not recover to initial values even after 12 h of dark acclimation. Final F v/F m of alga at 28°C under high irradiance treatment also did not recover, suggesting its sensitivity to photoinhibition at both low and high temperatures. These photosynthetic characteristics reflect both the adaptation of the species to the general environmental conditions, and its ability to acclimate to seasonal changes in seawater temperature within their geographical range of distribution.  相似文献

Kalanchoë daigremontiana, a CAM plant grown in a greenhouse, was subjected to severe water stress. The changes in photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry were investigated in water‐stressed leaves. To separate water stress effects from photoinhibition, water stress was imposed at low irradiance (daily peak PFD 150 μmol m?2 s?1). There were no significant changes in the maximal efficiency of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), the traditional fluorescence induction kinetics (OIP) and the polyphasic fluorescence induction kinetics (OJIP), suggesting that water stress had no direct effects on the primary PSII photochemistry in dark‐adapted leaves. However, PSII photochemistry in light‐adapted leaves was modified in water‐stressed plants. This was shown by the decrease in the actual PSII efficiency (ΦPSII), the efficiency of excitation energy capture by open PSII centres (Fv′/Fm′), and photochemical quenching (qP), as well as a significant increase in non‐photochemical quenching (NPQ) in particular at high PFDs. In addition, photoinhibition and the xanthophyll cycle were investigated in water‐stressed leaves when exposed to 50% full sunlight and full sunlight. At midday, water stress induced a substantial decrease in Fv/Fm which was reversible. Such a decrease was greater at higher irradiance. Similar results were observed in ΦPSII, qP, and Fv′/Fm′. On the other hand, water stress induced a significant increase in NPQ and the level of zeaxanthin via the de‐epoxidation of violaxanthin and their increases were greater at higher irradiance. The results suggest that water stress led to increased susceptibility to photoinhibition which was attributed to a photoprotective process but not to a photodamage process. Such a photoprotection was associated with the enhanced formation of zeaxanthin via de‐epoxidation of violaxanthin. The results also suggest that thermal dissipation of excess energy associated with the xanthophyll cycle may be an important adaptive mechanism to help protect the photosynthetic apparatus from photoinhibitory damage for CAM plants normally growing in arid and semi‐arid areas where they are subjected to a combination of water stress and high light.  相似文献

The impact of the plant pathogen Phytophthora cinnamomi and the fungicide phosphite on species assemblages, richness, abundance and vegetation structure was quantified at three sites in Kwongkan communities in the Southwest Australian Floristic Region. Healthy and diseased vegetation treated with phosphite over 7–16 years was compared with non‐treated healthy and diseased vegetation. After site differences, disease had the greatest effect on species assemblages, species richness and richness within families. Disease significantly reduced cover in the upper and lower shrub layers and increased sedge and bare ground cover. Seventeen of 21 species assessed from the families Ericaceae, Fabaceae, Myrtaceae and Proteaceae were significantly less abundant in non‐treated diseased vegetation. In diseased habitats, phosphite treatment significantly reduced the loss of shrub cover and reduced bare ground and sedge cover. In multivariate analysis of species assemblages, phosphite‐treated diseased plots grouped more closely with healthy plots. Seven of 17 susceptible species were significantly more abundant in phosphite‐treated diseased plots compared with diseased non‐treated plots. The abundance of seven of 10 Phytophthora‐susceptible species was significantly higher along transects in phosphite‐treated vegetation. Comparison of the floristics of healthy non‐treated with healthy‐treated plots showed no significant differences in species assemblages. Of 21 species assessed, three increased in abundance and only one decreased significantly in phosphite‐treated healthy plots. In three Kwongkan communities of the SWAFR, P. cinnamomi had a profound impact on species assemblages, richness, abundance and vegetation structure. There was no evidence of adverse effects of phosphite treatment on phosphorus‐sensitive species, even after fire. Treatment with phosphite enhanced the survival of key susceptible species and mitigated disease‐mediated changes in vegetation structure. In the absence of alternative methods of control in native communities, phosphite will continue to play an important role in the protection of high priority species and communities at risk of extinction due to P. cinnamomi.  相似文献

To investigate whether brassinosteroids (BRs) could be used to alleviate chill-induced inhibition of photosynthesis in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L) during chilling and subsequent recovery, the effects of exogenously applied 24-epibrassinolide (EBR) on gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, and antioxidant enzyme activity were studied. Cucumber plants were exposed to chilling under low light (12/8°C and 100 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD) for 3 days and then recovered under normal temperature and high irradiance (28/18°C and 600 μmol m−2 s−1 PPFD) for 6 days. Chilling significantly decreased the net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s), and increased rate of O2 ·− formation and H2O2 and malondialdehyde (MDA) content in cucumber leaves, but did not influence the optimal quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm). Chilling also decreased the effective quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (ΦPSII) and photochemical quenching (qP), but induced an increase in nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ), and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX). High irradiance (600 μmol m−2 s−1) further aggravated the decrease in P N, g s, ΦPSII and qP, and enhanced the increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and accumulation in the first day of recovery after chilling. However, high irradiance induced a sharp decrease in Fv/Fm and NPQ, as well as the activities of SOD and APX on the first day of recovery. EBR pretreatment significantly alleviated chill-induced inhibition of photosynthesis during chilling stress and subsequent recovery period, which was mainly due to significant increases in g s, ΦPSII, qP and NPQ. EBR pretreatment also reduced ROS generation and accumulation, and increased the activities of SOD and APX during chilling and subsequent recovery. Those results suggest that EBR pretreatment alleviates the chill reduction in photosynthesis and accelerated the recovery rate mainly by increasing of the stomatal conductance, the efficiency of utilization and dissipation of leaf absorbed light, and the activity of the ROS scavenging system during chilling and subsequent recovery period.  相似文献

We determined the effect of irradiance and temperature on the photosynthesis of two heteromorphic life‐history stages of an endangered freshwater red alga, Thorea gaudichaudii (Thoreales) by laboratory and field measurements. Net oxygenic photosynthesis–irradiance models of macroscopic and microscopic life‐history stages revealed similar low irradiance‐adapted responses, with a compensation irradiance (Ec) of 6.71 and 2.56 μmol photons m?2 s?1 (4.30–9.13 and 0.13–7.19, 95% Bayesian prediction interval, BPI) and saturating irradiance (Ek) of 26.6 and 30.0 μmol photons m?2 s?1 (19.0–37.4 and 12.1–63.0, BPI), respectively. A temperature‐dependent model of net photosynthesis and dark respiration in macroscopic and microscopic stages also showed similar temperature responses, and the gross photosynthetic rate (GPmax), 3.54 and 6.34 μg O2 gww?1 min?1 (3.10–3.99 and 5.31–8.21, BPI), was highest at 32.1 and 35.7°C (29.8–34.0 and 29.5–48.6, BPI). The maximum quantum yields (F v/F m) in macroscopic and microscopic stages were also similar in response with respect to temperature; however, it was somewhat steady at low temperatures with the highest value of 0.54 and 0.62 (0.54–0.55 and 0.61–0.63, BPI) at 17.8 and 15.0°C (16.7–18.8 and 12.3–17.1, BPI). The effective quantum yield (Φ PSII) in macroscopic and microscopic stages was also negatively correlated with irradiance, which decreased after 12 h of continuous exposure to 50 (low) and 1000 (high) μmol photons m?2 s?1 at 12 and 22°C. Large declines of Φ PSII and subsequent failure of F v/F m recovery were particularly enhanced at high irradiance, signifying photoinhibition. Diurnal change of Φ PSII and incident irradiance of the macroscopic stage under the field measurement revealed the midday depression of Φ PSII; however, there was little direct sunlight due to shading by the trees, and algae were occurring in the shaded locations in the freshwater spring.  相似文献

In this study, the gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, and antioxidant activity in eight tall fescue cultivars were investigated under aluminum stress. The results showed that the net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) were decreased, while the intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) was stable or increased under Al stress conditions. The efficiency of excitation capture by open PSII reaction centers (Fv/Fm), the maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (F v/F m), the quantum yield of PSII electron transport (ΦPSII), and the photochemical quenching (qP) were also decreased after Al stress, while the non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) was increased. Moreover, Al stress increased the antioxidant activities and MDA contents in each tall fescue cultivars. However, there was a lot genotype differences between the Al-tolerant and Al-sensitive cultivars. Cv. Barrington was the most sensitive cultivar and cv. Crossfire 2 was the most tolerant cultivar. The excessive excitation energy could not be dissipated efficiently by antenna pigments, and reactive oxygen species could not be scavenged efficiently, thereby resulting in membrane lipid peroxidation in cv. Barrington under Al stress conditions.  相似文献

Linear electron transport depends on balanced excitation of photosystem I and II. Far‐red light preferentially excites photosystem I (PSI) and can enhance the photosynthetic efficiency when combined with light that over‐excites photosystem II (PSII). The efficiency of different wavelengths of far‐red light exciting PSI was quantified by measuring the change in quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII) of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) under red/blue light with narrowband far‐red light added (from 678 to 752 nm, obtained using laser diodes). The ΦPSII of lettuce increased with increasing wavelengths of added light from 678 to 703 nm, indicating longer wavelengths within this region are increasingly used more efficiently by PSI than by PSII. Adding 721 nm light resulted in similar ΦPSII as adding 703 nm light, but ΦPSII tended to decrease as wavelength increased from 721 to 731 nm, likely due to decreasing absorptance and low photon energy. Adding 752 nm light did not affect ΦPSII. Leaf chlorophyll fluorescence light response measurements showed lettuce had higher ΦPSII under halogen light (rich in far‐red) than under red/blue light (which over‐excites PSII). Far‐red light is more photosynthetically active than commonly believed, because of its synergistic interaction with light of shorter wavelengths.  相似文献

Changes in climate, land management and fire regime have contributed to woody species expansion into grasslands and savannas worldwide. In the USA, Pinus ponderosa P.&C. Lawson and Juniperus virginiana L. are expanding into semiarid grasslands of Nebraska and other regions of the Great Plains. We examined P. ponderosa and J. virginiana seedling response to soil water content, one of the most important limiting factors in semiarid grasslands, to provide insight into their success in the region. Photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII, maximum carboxylation velocity, maximum rate of electron transport, stomatal limitation to photosynthesis, water potential, root‐to‐shoot ratio, and needle nitrogen content were followed under gradual soil water depletion for 40 days. J. virginiana maintained lower Ls, higher A, gs, and initial Fv/Fm, and displayed a more gradual decline in Vcmax and Jmax with increasing water deficit compared to P. ponderosa. J. virginiana also invested more in roots relative to shoots compared to P. ponderosa. Fv/Fm showed high PSII resistance to dehydration in both species. Photoinhibition was observed at ~30% of field capacity. Soil water content was a better predictor of A and gs than Ψ, indicating that there are other growth factors controlling physiological processes under increased water stress. The two species followed different strategies to succeed in semiarid grasslands. P. ponderosa seedlings behaved like a drought‐avoidant species with strong stomatal control, while J. virginiana was more of a drought‐tolerant species, maintaining physiological activity at lower soil water content. Differences between the studied species and the ecological implications are discussed.  相似文献

The epiphytic fern Platycerium bifurcatum grows in different habitats characterized by drought and high irradiance stress. The plant shows diurnal malate oscillations, indicative for CAM expression only in cover leaves, but not in sporotrophophyll. In P. bifurcatum cover leaves exposed to high irradiance and desiccation, the decrease in both CO2 assimilation (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) was accompanied with occurrence of diurnal malate oscillations. Exogenously applied abscisic acid (ABA) induced the decrease in P N and g s, but no clear change in malate oscillations. The measurements of the maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem 2 (Fv/Fm) under high irradiance showed distinct photoinhibition, but no clear changes in Fv/Fm due to desiccation and ABA-treatment were found.  相似文献

Seedling performance may determine plant distribution, especially in water-limited environments. Plants of Caragana korshinskii commonly grow in arid and semiarid areas in northwestern China, and endure water shortage in various ways, but little is known about their performance when water shortage occurs at early growth stages. The water relations, photosynthetic activity, chlorophyll (Chl) content and proline accumulation were determined in 1-year-old seedlings growing in a 1:1 mixture of Loess soil and Perlite and subjected to (1) a water deficit for 20 days and (2) kept adequately watered throughout. The water deficit induced low (−6.1 MPa) predawn leaf water potentials (LWP), but did not induce any leaf abscission. Stomatal conductance (g s), leaf transpiration rate (E), and net photosynthetic rate (P N) decreased immediately following the imposition of the water deficit, while the maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) (Fv/Fm) and the effective quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII) decreased 15 days later. An early and rapid decrease in g s, reduced E, increased Chl (a+b) loss, increased the apparent rate of photochemical transport of electrons through PSII (ETR)/P N, as well as a gradual increase in non-photochemical quenching of fluorescence (NPQ) and proline may have contributed to preventing ΦPSII from photodamage. C. korshinskii seedlings used a stress-tolerance strategy, with leaf maintenance providing a clear selective advantage, considering the occasional rainfall events during the growing season.  相似文献

Attention should be paid to ozone (O3) sensitivity of greening plant since ground-level O3 concentrations are increasing especially in urban and suburban area. We studied the ecophysiological responses to elevated O3 of four shrub species [Euonymus bungeanus Maxim. (EB), Photinia × fraseri (PF), Chionanthus retusus Lindl. & Paxt. (CR) and Cornus alba L. (CA)], which are often used for garden greening in China. Saplings of those species were exposed to high O3 concentration (70 nmol mol−1, 7 h d−1 for 65 d) in open-top growth chambers. Responses to O3 were assessed by gas exchanges, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence and dry mass. We found that elevated O3 significantly decreased lightsaturated net photosynthetic rate (P Nsat), transpiration rate (E) and stomatal conductance (g s). The ratio of intercellular CO2 to ambient CO2 concentration (C i/C a) did not reduce under O3 fumigation which suggested that the O3-induced depressions of P Nsat under O3 fumigation were probably due to limitation of mesophyll processes rather than stomatal limitation. High O3 exposure also significantly depressed the maximum efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry in the dark-adapted state (Fv/Fm) which meant the O3-induced photoinhibition. Both root dry mass and root/shoot ratios were significantly decreased under ozone fumigation, but the total mass was unchanged. The responses of gas exchange such as P Nsat in these four shrubs to O3 exposure were species-specific. Highest loss of P Nsat was observed in EB (−49.6%), while the CR had the lowest loss (−36.5%). Moreover, the O3-exposed CR showed similar g s as CF, reflecting that its O3 flux might be unchanged under elevated O3 environment. Ozone drastically decreased actual quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII) and electron transport rate (ETR) in EB while increased ΦPSII and ETR in CR. Furthermore, the relative losses in P Nsat positively correlated with the relative decreases in ΦPSII and ETR which indicated that the impairment of photosynthesis was probably affected by the light reaction process. The light reaction of EB was impaired most seriously but that of CR was not damaged. All results indicated that EB was probably the most sensitive shrub species to O3 while CR the most tolerant one. Therefore, CR might be an ideal choice for greening in ozone-polluted areas.  相似文献

Forty two-month-old plants of Dalbergia sissoo and D. latifolia were subjected for 56 d to water deficit induced by withholding water. Drought stress caused a significant reduction in plant height, stem diameter, net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (g s) in both species, but the reduction was greater in D. sissoo than in D. latifolia. Water use efficiency (P N/E) was adversely affected due to water stress only in D. latifolia, and intrinsic water use efficiency (P N/g s) was increased in both species. There was a slight effect of water stress on variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) (quantum yield of photosystem 2) in both species, but the species did not differ significantly in this attribute.  相似文献

Information on the photosynthetic process and its limitations is essential in order to predict both the capacity of species to adapt to conditions associated with climate change and the likely changes in plant communities. Considering that high‐mountain species are especially sensitive, three species representative of subalpine forests of the Central Catalan Pyrenees: mountain pine (Pinus uncinata Mill.), birch (Betula pendula Roth) and rhododendron (Rhododendron ferrugineum L.) were studied under conditions associated with climate change, such as low precipitation, elevated atmospheric [CO2] and high solar irradiation incident at Earth's surface, in order to detect any photosynthetic limitations. Short‐term high [CO2] increased photosynthesis rates (A) and water use efficiency (WUE), especially in birch and mountain pine, whereas stomatal conductance (gs) was not altered in either species. Birch showed photosynthesis limitation through stomatal closure related to low rainfall, which induced photoinhibition and early foliar senescence. Rhododendron was especially affected by high irradiance, showing early photosynthetic saturation in low light, highest chlorophyll content, lowest gas exchange rates and least photoprotection. Mountain pine had the highest A, photosynthetic capacity (Amax) and light‐saturated rates of net CO2 assimilation (Asat), which were maintained under reduced precipitation. Furthermore, maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm), thermal energy dissipation, PRI and SIPI radiometric index, and ascorbate content indicated improved photoprotection with respect to the other two species. However, maximum velocity of carboxylation of RuBisco (Vcmax) indicated that N availability would be the main photosynthetic limitation in this species.  相似文献

Chronic photoinhibition in seedlings of tropical trees   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Seedlings of five canopy species of tropical trees from Costa Rica and Puerto Rico were grown in full shade (midday range of photosynthetic photon flux density [PPFD], 100–140 μmol m?2 s?1), partial shade (midday PPFD, 400–600 μmol m?2 s?1) and full sun (midday PPFD, 1 500–1 800 μmol m?2 s?1) for 3 months. The species were Ochroma lagopus (Bombacaceae), a pioneer species; Inga edulis (Fabaceae), found in secondary forest; and Dipteryx panamensis (Fabaceae), Hampea appendiculata (Malvaceae), and Manilkara bidentata (Sapotaceae), three species characteristic of primary forest. After the plants were placed in the dark overnight, chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics were measured for recently expanded and mature leaves. The ratio of variable fluorescence to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) was used to estimate the degree of chronic photoinhibition. Only individuals of one species, Dipteryx panamensis, showed significant depression of Fv/Fm after long-term exposure to full sun. The depression was highly correlated with quantum yield of O2 evolution which also declined after exposure to full sun. The decline may have been related to foliar N concentration. Although all plants were supplied with ample nutrients, foliar N did not increase significantly for Dipteryx seedlings in full sun, whereas it did for Ochroma and Inga. Leaf age affected Fv/Fm only in the cases of Manilkara, where it was slightly lower in recently expanded leaves, and of Dipteryx where it interacted with the effects of light regime. We conclude that chronic photoinhibition is not common in seedlings of canopy trees of tropical rain forests except when availability of mineral nutrients may be limiting.  相似文献

The effects of 10 mM putrescine (Put) treated by spraying on leaves on growth, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic gas-exchange characteristics, and chlorophyll fluorescence were investigated by growing cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L. cv. ChangChun mici) using hydroponics with or without 65 mM NaCl as a salt stress. Salt stress caused the reduction of growth such as leaf area, root volume, plant height, and fresh and dry weights. Furthermore, net photosynthesis rate (P n), stomatal conductance (g s), intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), and transpiration rate (T r) were also reduced by NaCl, but water use efficiency (WUE; P n/T r) showed a tendency to be enhanced rather than reduced by NaCl. However, Put alleviated the reduction of P n by NaCl, and showed a further reduction of C i by NaCl. The reduction of g s and T r by NaCl was not alleviated at all. The enhancement of WUE by NaCl was shown to have no alleviation at day 1 after starting the treatment, but after that, the enhancement was gradually reduced till the control level. Maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (F v/F m) showed no effects by any conditions based on the combination of NaCl and Put, and in addition, kept constant values in plants grown in each nutrient solution during this experimental period. The efficiency of excitation energy capture by open photosystem II (PSII) (F v′/F m′), actual efficiency of PSII (ΦPSII), and the coefficient on photochemical quenching (qP) of plants with NaCl were reduced with time, and the reduction was alleviated till the control level by treatment with Put. The F v′/F m′, ΦPSII, and qP of plants without NaCl and/or with Put showed no variation during the experiment. Non-photochemical quenching of the singlet excited state of chlorophyll a (NPQ) showed quite different manner from the others as mentioned above, namely, continued to enhance during the experiment.  相似文献
