Otolith microstructure of Oxygymnocypris stewartii collected from the Lhasa River was examined and described with regards to the early life history events. The monthly changes in the number of microincrements on the margin of the otolith were examined to validate the approximately daily periodicity of otolith increment formation. The microstructure of otoliths was used to detect changes in microincrement deposition patterns corresponding with events during early life. The annuli, microincrements and checks including the hatch check, yolk absorption check and several recurrent patterns in the otolith were described. Periodicity of the recurrent patterns was weekly, fortnightly and monthly. Through counting the number of the microincrements, it was confirmed that the primary growth of O. stewartii was in a period of 7 or 8 months from late March to October; it was estimated that O. stewartii might hatch between April and May.  相似文献

Ptychobarbus dipogon is an endemic fish in the Yarlung Tsangpo River, but its biology is poorly known. We sampled 582 specimens (total length, TL, between 70.6 and 593.0 mm) from April 2004 to August 2006 in the Lhasa River, Tibet. We estimated ages based on the counts of alternating opaque and translucent zones (annuli) in thin transverse sections of lapilli otoliths. Ages ranged from 1+ to 23+ years for males and 1+ to 44+ for females. The observed 44+ years was the oldest reported for schizothoracine fishes. Females attained a larger size than males. The TL–weight relationship was W?=?7.12?×?10?6 TL 3.006 for combined sexes. The growth parameters fitted von Bertalanffy growth functions were $L_\infty = 598.66\,{\text{mm}}$ , k?=?0.0898 year?1, t 0?=??0.7261 year and $W_\infty = 1585.38\;{\text{g}}$ for females and $L_\infty = 494.23{\text{ mm}}$ , k?=?0.1197 year?1, t 0?=??0.7296 year and $W_\infty = 904.88{\text{ g}}$ for males. The longevities of 32.7 year for females and 24.3 year for males were similar to the observed ages. Using an empirical model we estimated the instantaneous rate of total mortality (Z) at 0.28 per year in the lower reaches. Z in the upper and middle stocks was close to the M because of unexploited or lightly exploited stock. Protracted longevity, slow growth, low natural mortality and large body size were typical characteristics of P. dipogon. The current declining trend of P. dipogon could be prevented by altering fishing regulations.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships and length–length were evaluated for three fish species (Schizopygopsis younghusbandi Regan, 1905; Ptychobarbus dipogon Regan, 1905 and Oxygymnocypris stewartii Lloyd, 1908) from the Yarlung Zangbo River in Tibet. Specimens were captured monthly using floating gillnets (mesh size 7.5 cm), bottom gillnets (mesh size 6.5 cm), and trap nets (mesh size 1.5 mm) from August 2008 to August 2009, March to August 2012, and March to April 2013. Regression coefficient (b) values of length–weight relationships (LWRs) ranged from 3.045 for P. dipogon to 3.193 for O. stewartii, whereas the a values ranged from 0.0040 to 0.0168 for O. stewartii and P. dipogon, respectively.  相似文献

A sample composed of 4973 specimens of the spotted goatfish, Pseudupeneus maculatus (4.5–29.2 cm fork length) was collected off northeastern Brazil from 1999 to 2002. Sagittae (398) were analyzed for age and growth estimation using both annuli and microincrements. For the first approach, the mean monthly marginal increment ratio analysis suggested that one band is formed annually from May to June. With the microincrements analysis, 15 specimens were reared (3–71 days) for validation of periodicity using oxytetracycline. Fluorescent dyes were observed in 10 specimens (7.5–16.9 cm). After testing, one microincrement was found to form daily. Otolith sections were polished and analyzed using a light microscope (100–1200× magnifications). Individuals larger than 22.6 cm (4 years) showed heavily overlaid increments on the otolith edge, which hampered the counts. There was agreement on the size from counts on an annual and daily basis. The von Bertalanffy function provided the following parameters: L = 33.23 cm; K = 0.265; t0 = 0.0883 year. The sample was composed of 0+ to >5‐year‐old specimens. Age at first maturity was 3.6 years (20 cm), whereas the recruitment age for fisheries was 3.9 years. Juveniles represented about half of the catch (48.7%), which may have implications for population equilibrium.  相似文献

Commercial beach‐seine (30–50 mm cod‐end mesh) catches of Gerres subfasciatus in Lake Macquarie southeast Australia were sampled monthly between December 2000 and April 2002 to investigate species age, growth and mortality characteristics using sectioned sagittal otoliths. Inclusion of fishery‐independent length data of young‐of‐the year collected from littoral seagrass beds with fine meshed beach seines augmented growth analyses. Fifty otoliths each month (total 448 female and 402 male) were examined with sections displaying alternating opaque and translucent zonation. Formation of otolith opaque zones occurred annually between August and December as determined by monthly marginal increment analyses. Spawning occurred between October and February, and a universal birth date of 1 December was assigned that allowed counts of opaque zones to be converted to age estimates in years and months (decimal ages). The von Bertalanffy growth function identified that both genders grew fast for their initial 2 years, but thereafter slowed. Females grew faster, had a greater mean fork length‐at‐age, estimated L and an observed greater maximum fork length in samples compared to males. Nevertheless, observed longevity was 10+ years for both genders. Commercial catches of both genders were dominated by the 2+ and 3+ year age classes. Catch curve analyses identified the instantaneous rate of total annual mortality to be ~0.8 and an exploitation rate of <0.5 for both genders. The data form a basis for developing assessment and management strategies of G. subfasciatus fisheries.  相似文献

Transverse sections of otoliths from Atlantic cod Gadus morhua from the Baltic Sea revealed narrow growth increments. The widths of these increments corresponded to daily increments from fish with known otolith growth rates and were therefore assumed to be daily increments. They exhibited a distinct pattern with increasing distance from the primary primordium. A series of zones with clearly distinguishable increments, first with increasing then with decreasing widths in a dome‐shaped pattern, were separated by zones where no regular increment structure was visible. Increment width seemed to be tightly coupled to the annual cycle in environmental temperature at a depth of 30–60 m, where G. morhua predominantly reside. Between 135 and 200 increments occurred within the different zones, with a non‐significant trend towards lower increment numbers and widths with distance from the primary primordium of the otolith. Increment formation apparently ceased at temperatures < 5–6° C, but growth during the cold months corresponded closely with estimated growth rates. The increment patterns seemed to reflect annual cycles in environmental temperature, and the count of the increment cycles may thus be a promising tool for the determination of the true age of Baltic G. morhua.  相似文献

 Age and growth of a paralepidid, Lestrolepis japonica, were determined from sagittal otoliths of specimens collected from April 2001 to February 2002 in Kagoshima Bay, southern Japan. Marginal growth increments indicated that the annulus was formed once a year, in August and September. Four groups were recognized, having none, one, two, or three annuli, respectively. Age in months was assigned to each individual on the basis of August as the birth month. The maximum recorded age was 48 months. Growth was expressed by von Bertalanffy's equation, L t  = 171.91{1 − exp[−0.148(t + 0.403)]}, t being the age in months and L t the standard length (mm) at age t. Macro- and microstructures of the sagitta, asteriscus, and lapillus of juveniles of Malawian characid Hemigrammopetersius barnardi were observed. The sagittae were arrowhead shaped and showed development of rostra. Increments in the sagitta were observable until the bases of the rostra but were invisible in the rostra. The asteriscus had an irregular shape with an ambiguous core and notches at the margin. The ambiguous core of the asteriscus led to difficulty in discerning the first increment. The lapilli were round and fan shaped. Increments in the lapilli were distinct from the core to the margin. The daily increment deposition was validated by alizarin complexone treatment, and the increments increased at the rate of 1 day−1 after hatching. These features suggested that in this species the lapillus is most appropriate for daily increment analysis. The hatching months were estimated based on the lapillus increment counts, and the results showed that this species continuously hatched in the rainy season for 6 months from November to April. The growth trajectory indicated that H. barnardi attains a total length of 50 mm within 4 months of hatching.  相似文献

 Features of otoliths in Opsaridium microcephalum juveniles were observed, and the increment formation pattern was validated using Alizarin Complexone (ALC). The sagitta was arrowhead shaped with an obvious core and rostra, the latter being fragile and easily destroyed by extracting and grinding processes. Increments around the core were readable but not in the rostra. The asteriscus was oval shaped with an ambiguous core leading to difficulty in discerning the first increment. The lapillus was round and fan shaped with an obvious core. Increments in the lapillus were clearly deposited from the core to the margin. These features made the lapillus the most appropriate for reading otolith increments. Increments counts in the lapillus formed after ALC treatment agreed with days elapsed, showing the daily formation of increments. Consequently, the lapillus is only appropriate for daily increment analysis in Opsaridium microcephalum. The relationship between pelagic larval duration (PLD) and population connectivity in marine fishes has been controversial, but most studies to date have focused on tropical taxa. Here, we examine PLD in 11 species of triplefin fishes from a temperate environment in the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand, to describe daily increment patterns and settlement marks in the otoliths. The formation of daily increments was validated using larvae of known age and tetracycline marking of settled juveniles. Settlement mark identity was verified by comparing total increment counts from otoliths of recently settled fishes with PLD counts from post-settlement fishes. A similar pattern of three groups of increments across the otolith was found in all specimens examined. The settlement mark was similar in all species and occurred as a sharp drop in increment width within the area of transition in optical density. PLD was lengthy, compared to species of triplefins from elsewhere, and ranged between 54.4 ± 1.7 SE days in Bellapiscis lesleyae to 86.4 ± 2.6 SE days in Forsterygion malcolmi. Variation in PLD within species was high but did not mask interspecific differences. PLD was not phylogenetically constrained, as sister species differed significantly in PLD. PLD was compared with genetic population connectivity for eight of the study species using mitochondrial gene flow data from Hickey, Lavery, Hannan, Baker, Clements. Mol Ecol 18:680–696 (2009). The observed lack of correlation between PLD and gene flow suggests that dispersal is limited by other factors, such as larval behaviour and the availability of settlement habitat.  相似文献

Age and growth of the Black Sea turbot, Psetta maxima, were determined from a total of 1445 individuals collected along the eastern Black Sea coast between 1990 and 1996. Age was estimated by interpreting growth rings in whole and broken sagittal otoliths. The former method underestimated the age over 5 years, and a maximum age of 11 years was observed by the latter. Marginal increment analysis clearly showed that a single annulus is formed in early summer each year. Growth in length differed between sexes, and females attained a larger size than males at the same age. No significant difference was found between the mean observed total length (TL), the back‐calculated TL derived from radius measurements and the TL estimated from otolith size–fish size relationship. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters estimated by the length‐at‐age data were: L = 96.24 cm; K = 0.119 year?1; t0 = ?0.01 year for the entire population.  相似文献

To investigate coupled, charge-translocating transport, it is imperative that the specific transporter current-voltage (IV ) relationship of the transporter is separated from the overall membrane IV relationship. We report here a case study in which the currents mediated by the K+-H+ symporter, responsible for high-affinity K+ uptake in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. cv. Columbia roots, are analyzed with an enzyme kinetic reaction scheme. The model explicitly incorporates changes in membrane voltage and external substrate, and enables the derivation of the underlying symport IV relationships from the experimentally obtained difference IV data. Data obtained for high-affinity K+ transport in A. thaliana root protoplasts were best described by a 1:1 coupled K+-H+ symport-mediated current with a parallel, outward non-linear K+ pathway. Furthermore, the large predictive value of the model was used to describe symport behaviour as a function of the external K+ concentration and the cytoplasmic K+ concentration. Symport activity is a complex function of the external K+ concentration, with first-order saturating kinetics in the micromolar range and a strong activity reduction when external K+ is in the millimolar range and the membrane depolarises. High cytoplasmic K+ levels inhibit symport activity. These responses are suggested to be part of the feedback mechanisms to maintain cellular K+ homeostasis. Otolith increment structure is widely used to estimate age and growth of marine fishes. Here, I test the accuracy of the long-term otolith increment analysis of the lemon damselfish Pomacentrus moluccensis to describe age and growth characteristics. I compare the number of putative annual otolith increments (as a proxy for actual age) and widths of these increments (as proxies for somatic growth) with actual tagged fish-length data, based on a 6-year dataset, the longest time course for a coral reef fish. Estimated age from otoliths corresponded closely with actual age in all cases, confirming annual increment formation. However, otolith increment widths were poor proxies for actual growth in length [linear regression r 2 = 0.44–0.90, n = 6 fish] and were clearly of limited value in estimating annual growth. Up to 60 % of the annual growth variation was missed using otolith increments, suggesting the long-term back calculations of otolith growth characteristics of reef fish populations should be interpreted with caution.  相似文献

The sharpbelly Hemiculter leucisculus, an invasive species, has expanded its range throughout much of Asia and into the Middle East. However, little is known of its adaptive changes regarding life history traits such as age, growth and mortality that could possibly explain its success as an invasive species. A detailed study of the invasive sharpbelly was conducted based on 4539 samples collected from July 2009 to June 2011 in Erhai Lake, China. Standard length ranged from 4.3–19.1 cm for females and 4.6–12.3 cm for males. Length–weight relationships for females and males were significantly different and described as W = 0.0076SL3.2608 and W = 0.0084SL3.1901, respectively. Otoliths are ideal for age determination because of the single annulus formed each year. Based on marginal increment analysis, the total mean CV for age estimate between two readings was 3.55%. The von Bertalanffy growth curves computed by observed length‐at‐age data were expressed as Lt = 25.6 (1 ? e?0.176 (t + 1.347)) for females and Lt = 16.4 (1 ? e?0.354 (t + 0.819)) for males. According to the age, growth and mortality data, there are three possible reasons for H. leucisculus attaining such dominance within a short time in Erhai Lake. First, because of the simple age structure of this species: 97.58% of males were 1–2 years old with a maximum age of only 3 years; 93.14% of females were 1–3 years old, with a maximum age of 6 years. Second, females grew larger than males at any age. Third, instantaneous mortality rates were much higher for males (4.22 year?1) than for females (1.17 year?1).  相似文献

Marginal increment analysis is a common technique for validating formation of a single annual growth ring on an ageing structure. False annuli can form on ageing structures when environmental variables affect growth of a fish, potentially resulting in age estimation bias. Therefore, validating ageing structures is essential to ensure that accurate and precise age estimates are collected when assessing fish population dynamics. Saugeye (Sander vitreus, [Mitchill, 1818]) and S. Canadensis, [Griffith and Smith, 1834]) are highly valued sport fish that are stocked across the Midwest United States. Using marginal increment analysis, we confirmed that a single annulus was formed yearly in otoliths of juvenile saugeye, however two annuli formed in dorsal spines in a single year. Timing of the first annulus formation in both otoliths and dorsal spines was completed after a slow growth period during winter (otoliths forming in April; dorsal spines forming in March). The second annulus (false annulus) that formed during August in dorsal spines did not form in otoliths. To understand what environmental factors may influence the false annulus to form, we collected monthly water temperatures and percent empty stomachs of juvenile saugeye. The highest water temperatures of the year occur during July and August, which resulted in saugeye seeking thermal refuge and affecting feeding habits. Mean monthly temperature and percent empty stomachs were positively correlated, so during times of high temperatures foraging rates declined, suggesting the formation of false annulus on dorsal spines of juvenile saugeye. This study demonstrates how thermal stress affected accuracy of non‐lethal aging structures and further emphasizes the need for age validation studies prior to using non‐lethal ageing structures to estimate age for a particular species from different aquatic systems.  相似文献

In this study, the population structure, growth and reproduction characteristics of 414 chub (Leuciscus cephalus L., 1758) from the ?kizcetepeler dam lake were investigated monthly between January and December 2000. Age groups ranged between I and VI for this species in the reservoir, with the second and third year‐classes dominating. Sex ratio was 1 : 1.4 (M : F), corresponding to 58.4% males and 41.6% females. Females attained greater size and age than males. The largest female captured was 24.8 cm FL, the largest male was 24.1 cm FL, both age VI. The von Bertalanffy growth equations and length–weight relationships were found as: Lt = 28.89[1 ?e?0.224(t+1.55)] for females, Lt = 26.71[1 ? e?0.259(t+1.55)] for males; Wt = 347.386[1?e?0.224h (t+1.55)]2.86 for females, Wt =286.48[1?e?0.259 (t+1.55)]2.92 for males; W = 0.0227 × L2.87 for females and W = 0.0194 × L2.92 for males. Significant statistical differences in condition factors between age classes and sexes were not found (P > 0.05, t‐test). Spawning period of this species in the lake was between April and May.  相似文献

A detailed study was made of the scales on the golden grey mullet Liza aurata in the lagoon of Messolonghi (W. Greece), in order to examine the suitability of scales for ageing. From a total of 1048 specimens of 9–59 cm total length (TL), the estimated ages ranged from 0+ to 8+ years, with only females at ages 7+ and 8+. The scale reading was reliable, the annuli recognizable and each annulus radius easily measured. There was a great overlapping in the annulus radius between the ages 1+ and 4+, indicative of extended spawning time and differences in growth of yearly recruits. The scale radius (Rmax) was strongly related with TL by the pooled equation: TL = 1.5501Rmax0.77, with no significant differences between the sexes. From examination of the monthly variation in the distance of the outermost annulus from the scale margin, it was determined that the annulus is formed in February. No annuli were detected in fish of less than 20 cm TL.  相似文献

In this study, laboratory reared Cirrhinus molitorella from hatching through to the juvenile stage were used to validate daily increment deposition. Lapilli were suitable for ageing C. molitorella. The slope of the linear relationships between increment counts and age was not significantly different from 1 (n = 258, P > 0·05), indicating that growth increments are deposited daily. The first increment following the first‐feeding check formed 3 days post hatch (dph). One hundred and twenty‐three juveniles, ranging from 36·4 to 84·7 mm in body length (LB), were collected in the Pear River estuary from July to January in both 2014 and 2015 and used to estimate growth rate. The core in the lapillus, consisting of a single primordium, a diffuse area and the first‐feeding band, was followed by 20 narrow and poorly contrasted daily increments. Thereafter, increments were wide and well‐defined, and, finally became less distinct, but still homogenous after c. 53 dph. The mean increment width increased to the 29th increment and stayed relatively constant up to the 35th increment and then, gradually declined to the edge of the otolith. Wild juveniles were aged from 69 to 178 dph and hatched from the 15 February to 2 September. Growth rate was estimated from the adjusted linear regression of LB on age: LB = 4·37 + 0·44A (r2 = 0·60), where A = age. The radius of the core and the regularity and resolution of the increments showed some differences between reared and wild fish. These results are of value for the further study of early life traits and recruitment of C. molitorella.  相似文献

The lower and upper incisors has been studied in striped field mice (Apodemus agrarius), yellow-necked mice (A. flavicollis), and migratory hamsters (Cricetulus migratorius) trapped in the Volgograd Region from April to March. The incisors of all animals have been found to have a striated surface, with series of slight ridges and grooves. As shown by analyzing the incisors of animals labeled with tetracycline, these are daily increments of dentin. The total numbers of increments (the period of complete tooth renewal) in the upper and lower incisors of the same animal are similar, but the degrees of their distinctness can be different. The number of daily increments increases but their width (daily growth rate) decreases with age even in adult animals and, in addition, varies by seasons. These two trends—the decrease in tooth increment with age and its seasonal variation—have proved to mask each other when an uneven-aged sample of animals trapped over several months is studied. Therefore, the season of death of an animal cannot be reliably estimated from the width of daily tooth increment unless the age of this animal is taken into account. The increment width in young animals in autumn may be the same as in older animals in spring and summer. In attempts to use the incisor surface sculpture for determining the season of animal death, it is necessary to separate the young from adults (at least by the criterion of incisor length). The decrease of increment width with age and its seasonal variation in the absence of obvious changes in the diet and pattern of incisor attrition indicate that the incisor growth rate is subject to age-dependent and seasonal changes, as is the growth rate of the organism as a whole. The distinctness and internal structure of daily increments also vary depending on animal age and species, which is due apparently to differences in the circadian rhythms of incisor growth. The presence of one or, less frequently, several grooves within a daily increment, which has occurred in all species studied, is evidence for not only circadian but also ultradian rhythms in the growth of incisors.  相似文献
