The immune system is essential for health and survival of vertebrates, yet still little is known about the ontogeny of the immune system in wild birds. The southern rockhopper penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome chrysocome) is a semi-altricial seabird with a long developmental period and reversed hatching asynchrony, favouring the survival of B-chicks. We compared leucocyte counts and baseline corticosterone levels of southern rockhopper penguin chicks under different preconditions such as sex and origin from an A- or B-egg from 4 to 51 days of age. We conducted an experiment to compare leucocyte profiles and baseline corticosterone levels in A- and B-chicks in single-egg clutches as well as in B-chicks from normal two egg-clutches (one A- and one B-egg). None of these treatments influenced leucocyte counts or corticosterone levels, indicating a similar investment in the immune system. Our main finding was an increase of leucocytes/10,000 erythrocytes with age, which was mainly caused by an increase in lymphocyte numbers. This suggests differential investment into acquired immunity at this stage of development. As the granulocyte/lymphocyte (G/L) ratio did not change with age or body condition, G/L ratios seem not to reflect stress caused by poor provisioning of penguin chicks. This was also reinforced by the decrease of plasma corticosterone levels with age. Body condition was negatively correlated with monocyte numbers, suggesting a poorer health status of penguin chicks in poorer body condition. Yet, there was no link between body condition and other leucocyte parameters, indicating that chicks in a good body condition did not additionally invest into their immune system.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to clarify whether salivary cortisol secretion in dogs had a circadian rhythm. Saliva sampling during a 24-hour period was performed in 4 non-consecutive days. Eight adult beagle dogs (4 males and 4 females) were divided into 4 groups, and 2 dogs (1 male and 1 female) were used for each repetition. Saliva samples were taken at 1 h intervals from 9:00 a. m. to 9:00 a. m. of the following day. Salivary cortisol concentrations were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. No circadian rhythm was detected for salivary cortisol, and the differences among salivary cortisol concentrations measured every hour were not demonstrated during a 24-hour period in dogs.  相似文献

Capsule Crèches formed early in the season lasted longer than those formed later, but a longer crèching period did not appear to confer higher chick survival.

Aims To investigate the ecological factors influencing the benefit to parents of crèching behaviour by measuring chick survival.

Methods Mark–recapture was used to model apparent daily survival of 505 chicks during the crèching period in three different crèches. We contrasted models with different tipping points to assess possible differences across crèches in chick survival during the first week and in the moment at which chick departures began.

Results We did not find a clear difference across crèches on daily chick survival during the first stages of the crèche. By modelling chick apparent survival as a linear function of time we showed that the latest formed crèche dispersed more rapidly.

Conclusions The two crèches formed early in the season lasted longer than the one formed later but chicks did not appear to have a higher survival over the first week of crèching. We suggest that a longer period at the crèche should result in a higher survival in the period soon after fledging because chicks leave the crèche 4–7 days older than other chicks. Furthermore, early crèches are synchronous with those of other species breeding in the same area, thus perhaps diluting predation. We discuss the limitations of our analysis and the possible implications for the community of waterbirds breeding at our study site.  相似文献

The carry-over effect of a pre-starter diet (0 to 3 days of age) deficient in lysine on subsequent growth and body composition (3 to 10 days) was examined in two experiments on male broiler chicks raised in cages. In experiment 1, lysine deficiency was applied from 3 to 10 days after providing a balanced pre-starter control feed (D+, 1.40% lysine) or a lysine deficient feed (D−) during the first 3 days. Three levels of deficiency (A = 0.63%, B = 0.72%, C = 0.82%) were tested. Growth and feed intake were higher in D+ than in D− chicks ( P < 0.001). However, the feed conversion ratio from 3 to 10 days of age was higher in D+ chicks ( P < 0.001); pre-starter and starter feeds interacted ( P < 0.04) with the feed conversion of treatment D+/A = 2.07 being better than treatment D+/A = 2.61 ( P < 0.05). This suggests that chicks deficient from hatching exhibit a relatively lower sensitivity to lysine deficiency than chicks started on a control diet. In experiment 2, performance, slaughter parameters and body composition were analysed at 3 and 10 days of age, in chicks having received a lysine deficient feed (D0, 0.72% lysine), a control feed (D+, 1.40% lysine) or having been pair fed with control feed adjusted to D0 intake (PF) from 0 to 3 days of age, and then fed D0 ad libitum from 3 to 10 days of age. At 3 days, PF chicks had a higher body weight ( P < 0.05) than D0, and thus a better feed conversion. Body composition in relative values was little or not affected by dietary treatments, but the breast muscle weight at 3 days was higher in D+ and PF chicks compared with D0 ( P < 0.05) and this effect was even accentuated at 10 days of age. The present work confirms that early nutrition can have subsequent consequences on the adjustment of fast growing broiler chicks to their nutritional conditions. It also suggests that breast muscle development is a more reactive parameter than whole body composition in this kind of experiments.  相似文献

The human circadian timing system has previously been shown to free run with a period slightly longer than 24 h in subjects living in the laboratory under conditions of forced desynchrony. In forced desynchrony, subjects are shielded from bright light and periodic time cues and are required to live on a day length outside the range of circadian entrainment. The work schedule used for most personnel aboard American submarines is 6 h on duty alternating with 12 h off duty. This imposed 18-h cycle is too short for human circadian synchronization, especially given that there is no bright-light exposure aboard submarines. However, crew members are exposed to 24-h stimuli that could mediate synchronization, such as clocks and social contacts with personnel who are living on a 24-h schedule. The authors investigated circadian rhythms of salivary melatonin in 20 crew members during a prolonged voyage on a Trident nuclear submarine. The authors found that in crew members living on the 18-h duty cycle, the endogenous rhythm of melatonin showed an average period of 24.35 h (n = 12, SD = 0.18 h). These data indicate that social contacts and knowledge of clock time are insufficient for entrainment to a 24-h period in personnel living by an 18-h rest-activity cycle aboard a submarine.  相似文献

AIMS: The purpose of these experiments was to determine whether the heart and lungs of young chicks harboured bacteria. METHODS AND RESULTS: Samples of the heart and lungs were aseptically removed from chicks on scheduled sampling days. Experiment 1 showed that of the 360 birds evaluated during the late embryonic and early post-hatching periods, only 10.8% harboured bacteria in the heart, lungs, and heart and lungs simultaneously. Experiment 2 suggested that bacteria in these organs were transient. Twenty-three bacterial species were found in the hearts whereas 30 were found in the lungs. Experiment 3 showed that only 1.4% of embryos harboured bacteria in the yolk, albumen, heart and lungs whereas 12.9% of the embryos had bacteria in the air cell. CONCLUSIONS: During the post-hatching period, there was a higher incidence of bacterial isolation in the heart and lungs, whilst during the embryonic development period, there was a lower incidence of bacterial isolation from these two organs. Results suggested that the heart and lungs do not have a residual bacterial flora; rather, opportunistic bacteria occasionally pass through these tissues. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: These experiments proved that bacteria could be isolated in the heart and lungs of healthy chicks reared from E17 to 3 weeks of age.  相似文献

A knowledge of diel variation and the vertical distribution of phytoplankton communities may contribute to a better understanding of the driving factors of key species. Applying functional-group classification provides important information on the causes of species selection in the pelagic community. The diel variation of phytoplankton functional groups was analysed during an autumnal stratification period with the aim of understanding their changes in the vertical position related to light, mixing regime and grazing pressure. Phytoplankton and zooplankton communities were sampled every 4 h during a 24-h period in a vertical profile in a subtropical meso-eutrophic reservoir. Strong stratification during a 24-h cycle and a mixed clear epilimnion with partial atelomixis marked the autumn season in the Faxinal reservoir, southern Brazil. The highest phytoplankton densities and biomass were found during the second part of the day, a general pattern reported in the literature, and may be explained by zooplankton dynamics. During the 24-h cycle, phytoplankton functional groups lacking a self-regulating capacity and those able to regulate their vertical position were vertically segregated in the lake. The diel behaviour of both groups was driven by the mixing regime (including atelomixis), light and zooplankton grazing pressure.  相似文献

A group of nuclear submariners was studied to examine whether an 18-h routine (6-h on, 12-h off watch) during a 10-week submerged patrol affected the 24-h circadian rhythm in oral temperature, Thayer's activation, Mood 'Activity' (MA) and Mood 'Happiness' (MH). They were observed during three phases of the patrol: Phase 1, the beginning 8-day period; Phase 2, the middle of the voyage; and Phase 3, the last 7-8 day period. The group-synchronized 24-h rhythm in oral temperature disappeared during Phase 3. The group-synchronized 24-h rhythms in Thayer's activation and in MA and MH disappeared during Phases 2 and 3. A group-synchronized 18-h rhythm was not produced in any of the variables in any phase, except MH during Phase 2. Periodicity analysis of the individuals' data showed that a loss of 24-h rhythmicity in oral temperature was due not only to reduced circadian amplitude but also to a dispersion of Time of Peak (TOPs). Loss of 24-h rhythm in 'Activation', 'Happiness', and 'Activity' was predominantly due to a wider dispersion of TOPs. The 18-h routine did appear to exert a small modulating effect on rhythmic activity in the variables examined in this study. Since the sleep/wakefulness cycle was well entrained by the 18-h routine, the submariners experienced a spontaneous internal desynchronization between the activity cycle and the cycles or oral temperature and psychological states. The performance and health consequences of this chronic dyschronism have yet to be explored. We suggest further research to determine the usefulness of an index of synchronization among the physiological and psychological variables, and the relationship of the desynchronizing effects to performance.  相似文献

Blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) are influenced by the sleep-wake cycle, with relatively abrupt falls occurring in association with sleep onset (SO). However, the pattern and rate of fall in BP and HR during SO and the processes that contribute to the fall in these variables have not been fully identified. Continuous BP and HR recordings were collected beginning 1 h before lights out (LO) until the end of the first non-rapid eye movement sleep period in 21 young, healthy participants maintained in a supine position. Five consecutive phases were defined: 1) the 30 min of wakefulness before LO; 2) LO to stage 1 sleep; 3) stage 1 to stage 2 sleep; 4) stage 2 sleep to the last microarousal before stable sleep; and 5) the first 30 min of undisturbed stable sleep. The data were analyzed on a beat-by-beat basis and reported as 2-min periods for phases 1 and 5 and 10% epochs for phases 2, 3, and 4 (as participants had variable time periods in these phases). The level of baroreflex (BR) activity was assessed by the sequence technique and an autoregressive multivariate model. Furthermore, during phases 3 and 4, the BP and HR responses to arousal from sleep were determined. There were substantial falls in BP and HR after LO before the initial onset of theta;-activity (phase 3) and again after the onset of stable sleep after the cessation of spontaneous arousals. During phases 3 and 4 when there were repeated arousals from sleep, the fall in both variables was retarded. Furthermore, both the rate and magnitude of the fall in BP were negatively associated with the number of arousals during phases 3 and 4. There was a small increase in the sensitivity of the BR and indirect evidence of a substantial fall in its set point.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of repeated thermal conditioning (RTC) at an early age on physiological and behavioral responses in chicks.MethodsBirds were assigned to one of the four treatments in which the RTC was exposure to 40 °C for 15 min daily. The treatments were 1) no thermal conditioning (control); 2) early exposure group (EE; RTC from 2 to 4 days of age); 3) later exposure group (LE; RTC from 5 to 7 days of age); or 4) both early and later exposure (BE; RTC from 2 to 7 days of age). All groups of chicks were challenged with high ambient temperature (40 °C for 15 min) at two weeks of age.ResultsDuring heat challenge, initiation times of dissipation behaviors (panting and wing-drooping) were measured. Rectal temperature and respiration rate were measured after and before heat challenge. Hypothalamic samples and blood were collected at the end of heat challenges. Initiation times of dissipation behaviors and rectal temperature were not affected by the treatments. Increases in respiration rate in response to heat challenge were suppressed by early RTC treatment. There was no clear pattern of glucose levels in relation to thermal conditioning, whereas plasma corticosterone levels were decreased by early treatment (EE and BE groups). Hypothalamic thyrotropin releasing hormone gene expression was suppressed by early and later thermal conditioning and suppressed further by both early and later exposure. Neuropeptide Y gene expression in the BE group was lower than in the other groups, with a similar trend for corticotropin releasing hormone expression.ConclusionOur results suggest that the effect of repeated thermal conditioning on the central thermoregulatory system depends on the number of times that chicks experienced conditioning. In addition, repeated thermal conditioning has greater effects on the acquisition of thermotolerance when conditioning occurs in chicks of two to four days of age in comparison with chicks of five to seven days of age.  相似文献
