Although the trade-off between reproductive effort and longevity is central to both sexual selection and evolutionary theories of aging, there has been little synthesis between these fields. Here, we selected directly on adult longevity of male field crickets Teleogryllus commodus and measured the correlated responses of age-dependent male reproductive effort, female lifetime fecundity, and several other life-history traits. Male longevity responded significantly to five generations of divergent selection. Males from downward-selected lines commenced calling sooner and reached their peak calling effort at a younger age. They called more per night and, despite living less than half as long, called more overall than males selected for increased longevity. Females from the downward-selected lines lived significantly shorter lives than females from the upward-selected lines but still produced the same number of offspring. Nymph survival, development time, and body size and weight at eclosion did not show significant correlated response to selection on male longevity, despite evidence for substantial genetic variation in each of these traits. Collectively, our findings directly support the antagonistic pleiotropy model of aging and suggest an important role for sexual selection in the aging process.  相似文献

The immunocompetence handicap hypothesis predicts that male sexual trait expression should be positively correlated with immunocompetence. Here we investigate if immune function in the cricket, Teleogryllus commodus, is related to specific individual components of male sexual signals, as well as to certain multivariate combinations of these components that females most strongly prefer. Male T. commodus produce both advertisement and courtship calls prior to mating. We measured fine-scale structural parameters of both call types and also recorded nightly advertisement calling effort. We then measured two standard indices of immune function: lysozyme-like activity of the haemolymph and haemocyte counts. We found a weak, positive relationship between advertisement calling effort and lysozyme-like activity. There was, however, little evidence that individual structural call components or the net multivariate attractiveness of either call type signalled immune function. The relationships between immunity and sexual signaling did not differ between inbred and outbred males. Our data suggest that it is unlikely that females assess overall male immune function using male calls.  相似文献

During the first 2 h following injection of 0.02 μCi of [14C]-prostaglandin E2 into the abdomen of adult virgin female crickets, T. commodus, the concentration of radioactivity in the circulating hemolymph decreases. The reduction is associated with the increase in radioactivity in the Malpighian tubule/hindgut complex, ovaries, fat body, and, to a much smaller extent, ventral nerve cord and flight muscles. The finding that most, but not all, of the radioactivity in the hindgut is located in the contents of the lumen suggests that a high proportion of prostaglandins circulating in the hemolymph of T. commodus is eliminated by the usual excretory pathway. We suggest that the differential uptake of label from the circulating hemolymph by various tissues may be related to possible physiological functions that remain to be discovered.  相似文献

Abstract. We investigate maintenance of quantitative genetic variation at mutation-selection balance for multiple traits. The intrinsic strength of real stabilizing selection on one of these traits denoted the "target trait" and the observed strength of apparent stabilizing selection on the target trait can be quite different: the latter, which is estimable, is much smaller (i.e., implying stronger selection) than the former. Distinguishing them may enable the mutation load to be relaxed when considering multivariate stabilizing selection. It is shown that both correlations among mutational effects and among strengths of real stabilizing selection on the traits are not important unless they are high. The analysis for independent situations thus provides a good approximation to the case where mutant and stabilizing selection effects are correlated. Multivariate stabilizing selection can be regarded as a combination of stabilizing selection on the target trait and the pleiotropic direct selection on fitness that is solely due to the effects of real stabilizing selection on the hidden traits. As the overall fitness approaches a constant value as the number of traits increases, multivariate stabilizing selection can maintain abundant genetic variance only under quite weak selection. The common observations of high polygenic variance and strong stabilizing selection thus imply that if the mutation-selection balance is the true mechanism of maintenance of genetic variation, the apparent stabilizing selection cannot arise solely by real stabilizing selection simultaneously on many metric traits.  相似文献

The prevalence and evolutionary consequences of cryptic female choice (CFC) remain highly controversial, not least because the processes underlying its expression are often concealed within the female reproductive tract. However, even when female discrimination is relatively easy to observe, as in numerous insect species with externally attached spermatophores, it is often difficult to demonstrate directional CFC for certain male phenotypes over others. Using a biological assay to separate male crickets into attractive or unattractive categories, we demonstrate that females strongly discriminate against unattractive males by removing their spermatophores before insemination can be completed. This results in significantly more sperm being transferred by attractive males than unattractive males. Males respond to CFC by mate guarding females after copulation, which increases the spermatophore retention of both attractive and unattractive males. Interestingly, unattractive males who suffered earlier interruption of sperm transfer benefited more from mate guarding, and they guarded females more vigilantly than attractive males. Our results suggest that postcopulatory mate guarding has evolved via sexual conflict over insemination times rather than through genetic benefits of biasing paternity toward vigorous males, as has been previously suggested.  相似文献

Mate choice may impose both linear (i.e., directional) and nonlinear (i.e., quadratic and correlational) sexual selection on advertisement traits. Traditionally, mate recognition and sensory tuning have been thought to impose stabilizing (i.e., negative quadratic) sexual selection, whereas adaptive mate choice effects directional selection. It has been suggested that adaptive choice may exert positive quadratic and/or correlational sexual selection. Earlier, we showed that five structural components of the advertisement call of male field crickets (Teleogryllus commodus) were under multivariate stabilizing selection under laboratory conditions. Here we experimentally estimate selection on these five traits plus a measure of calling activity (the number of repeats in a looped bout of calling) in the field. There was general support for multivariate stabilizing selection on call structure, and calling activity was under strong positive directional selection, as predicted for a signal of genetic quality. There was, however, also appreciable correlational selection, suggesting an interaction between male call structure and calling effort. Interestingly, selection for short interbout durations of silence favored longer intercall durations in the field, in contrast to results from continuous looped call playback in the laboratory. We discuss the general importance of nonlinear selection in the honest signaling of genetic quality.  相似文献

Summary The most crowded individuals in a population often compete for space and develop a regular pattern of spacing. Such regularity is not normally recognized because it occurs within high-density regions of a populated area showing overall aggregation. Thus competition for space, as reflected by spatial pattern, often goes undetected when standard tests for spatial randomness are used. The test described in this paper makes use of truncated samples of nearest-neighbour distances arranged in ascending order, so that only the pattern of spacing of the most crowded individuals is analysed. This is the basis of Pielou's test (1962, 1977) for spatial competition. An advantage of the approach described is that the density of the most crowded individuals is determined graphically. The graphical method also provides a means for choosing an appropriate, non-arbitrary, truncation point for the test. The test was applied to two samples of singing crickets to demonstrate the procedure. The biological significance of the spacing patterns identified is discussed.  相似文献

Sexual selection can target many different types of traits. However, the relative influence of different sexually selected traits during evolutionary divergence is poorly understood. We used the field cricket Teleogryllus oceanicus to quantify and compare how five traits from each of three sexual signal modalities and components diverge among allopatric populations: male advertisement song, cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profiles and forewing morphology. Population divergence was unexpectedly consistent: we estimated the among‐population (genetic) variance‐covariance matrix, D , for all 15 traits, and Dmax explained nearly two‐thirds of its variation. CHC and wing traits were most tightly integrated, whereas song varied more independently. We modeled the dependence of among‐population trait divergence on genetic distance estimated from neutral markers to test for signatures of selection versus neutral divergence. For all three sexual trait types, phenotypic variation among populations was largely explained by a neutral model of divergence. Our findings illustrate how phenotypic integration across different types of sexual traits might impose constraints on the evolution of mating isolation and divergence via sexual selection.  相似文献

Several studies suggest that females mate multiply so that they can preferentially fertilize eggs with the sperm of genetically more compatible males. Unrelated males are expected to be genetically more compatible with a female than her close relatives. We tested whether black field crickets, Teleogryllus commodus, can bias sperm usage toward unrelated males by comparing egg hatching success of females mated to two of their siblings (SS), two sibling males unrelated to the female (NN) or to one unrelated male and a sibling male (NS or SN). Egg hatching success was highly repeatable. Hatching success varied significantly among females of the three mating types (P = 0.011, n = 245 females). The estimated mean hatching success of 36.8% for SS females was significantly less that the 43.4% of NN females, indicating an effect of inbreeding on hatching success. If females preferentially use the sperm of a less closely related male, the hatching success of NS/SN females should be closer to 43.4% than 36.8%. It was, in fact, only 34.9%. This does not differ significantly from the value expected if the two males contributed an equal amount of sperm that was then used randomly. Although polyandry may confer indirect genetic benefits, our results provide no evidence that female T. commodus gain these benefits by biasing paternity toward genetically more compatible males through postcopulatory mechanisms.  相似文献

Ultrastructural changes to the midgut epithelium of nymphs of the black field cricket (Teleogryllus commodus) after ingestion of potato protease inhibitor II (PPI-II) (0.6% (w/v) in artificial diet) were determined by light and electron microscopy. Crickets fed diet containing PPI-II grew more slowly than those fed control diet and changes observed to the PPI-II-fed nymphs included reduction of midgut wall depth, vacuolisation of the epithelial cells, swelling of the microvilli, cellular protrusions into the midgut and eventual rupture of individual or small groups of epithelial cells. These changes were first seen 2 days after PPI-II ingestion. Complete disintegration of the midgut to the basement membrane was not seen during the 27-day observation period and repair and regeneration of pockets of epithelial cells was observed. Immunocytochemistry revealed that PPI-II was localised within the ectoperitrophic matrix space of the gut. The location of the peritrophic matrix was determined by labelling with wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), but no rupture of this structure was observed in PPI-II-fed nymphs.  相似文献

Growth and survival responses were determined for black field crickets Teleogryllus commodus (Walker) (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) on artificial diets containing a range of levels of dietary protein, and protease inhibitors (PI's) at 0.33% (weight volume, w:v). The effect on cricket gut enzyme activities of adding PI's to a high protein diet was measured. All PI's which had in vitro binding activity against either trypsin or elastase (the two major cricket gut endopeptidases) reduced growth, but those which bound to both enzymes had the greatest effect. None of the PI's acted as a source of nutritional protein. Cricket growth rate increased with the addition of casein up to 3% w:v, but not with a similar addition of wheatgerm. The impact of PI's on growth was greatest on a 1.5% casein diet. On a high protein (3% casein) diet, the gut activity of trypsin was increased by potato proteinase inhibitors 1 and 2 while the activity of elastase and leucine amino peptidase were increased by soybean trypsin inhibitor and potato proteinase inhibitor 2. Increasing dietary casein up to 3.3% improved cricket survival. The potential of PI's as plant resistance factors against crickets was confirmed.  相似文献

Debates about how coevolution of sexual traits and preferences might promote evolutionary diversification have permeated speciation research for over a century. Recent work demonstrates that the expression of such traits can be sensitive to variation in the social environment. Here, we examined social flexibility in a sexually selected male trait—cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profiles—in the field cricket Teleogryllus oceanicus and tested whether population genetic divergence predicts the extent or direction of social flexibility in allopatric populations. We manipulated male crickets’ social environments during rearing and then characterized CHC profiles. CHC signatures varied considerably across populations and also in response to the social environment, but our prediction that increased social flexibility would be selected in more recently founded populations exposed to fluctuating demographic environments was unsupported. Furthermore, models examining the influence of drift and selection failed to support a role of sexual selection in driving population divergence in CHC profiles. Variation in social environments might alter the dynamics of sexual selection, but our results align with theoretical predictions that the role social flexibility plays in modulating evolutionary divergence depends critically on whether responses to variation in the social environment are homogeneous across populations, or whether gene by social environment interactions occur.  相似文献

The Emma field cricket, Teleogryllus emma (Ohmachi & Matsuura), distributed between 43°N and 30°N in the Japanese archipelago, is univoltine and overwinters in the egg stage. Its eggs hatch on the slope of the Oishi Dam (38.03°N, 139.57°E, 160–170 m a.s.l.) in late June, adults begin emerging from late August, and oviposition lasts until early October. Oviposition is limited to the period when the water level of the Oishi Dam is low. The period from egg hatching to adult emergence is approximately 1 month shorter than that of the T. emma population on the Arakawa riverside (38.09°N, 139.57°E, 29 m a.s.l.), which is approximately only 7 km from the Oishi Dam. The egg and body sizes of T. emma on the slope of the Oishi Dam were smaller than those of T. emma on the Arakawa riverside, and the egg and nymphal periods were shorter; these variations were inherited by the next generation of T. emma. The egg period, nymphal period and head width of T. emma on the dam slope correspond to those of the populations near 40°N. Several traits of the T. emma population on the dam slope were naturally selected by adapting to the isolated environment, resulting in the genetic variations. However, their variations were small and the period after isolation is short, suggesting that it is in the early stages of speciation.  相似文献

The outcome of mate choice depends on complex interactions between males and females both before and after copulation. Although the competition between males for access to mates and premating choice by females are relatively well understood, the nature of interactions between cryptic female choice and male sperm competition within the female reproductive tract is less clear. Understanding the complexity of postcopulatory sexual selection requires an understanding of how anatomy, physiology and behaviour mediate sperm transfer and storage within multiply mated females. Here we use a newly developed molecular technique to directly quantify mixed sperm stores in multiple mating females of the black field cricket, Teleogryllus commodus. In this species, female postcopulatory choice is easily observed and manipulated as females delay the removal of the spermatophore in favour of preferred males. Using twice‐mated females, we find that the proportion of sperm in the spermatheca attributed to the second male to mate with a female (S2) increases linearly with the time of spermatophore attachment. Moreover, we show that the insemination success of a male increases with its attractiveness and decreases with the size of the female. The effect of male attractiveness in this context suggests a previously unknown episode of mate choice in this species that reinforces the sexual selection imposed by premating choice and conflicts with the outcome of postmating male harassment. Our results provide some of the clearest evidence yet for how sperm transfer and displacement in multiply mated females can lead directly to cryptic female choice, and that three distinct periods of sexual selection operate in black field crickets.  相似文献

The major proteases of the black field cricket, Telleogryllus commodus, digestive system have been identified, partially purified and characterized. Classification of proteases into different classes of endo- and exopeptidases was made on the ability to hydrolyse specific synthetic substrates, pH optima and their interaction with a range of specific chemical and proteinaceous inhibitors. The major activities detected were trypsin, elastase, an uncharacterized proteinase (proteinase Tc), leucine aminopeptidase and carboxypeptidases A and B. Chymotrypsin activity was very low and neither cysteine endopeptidase nor metalloendopepitidase activities were found. Elastase is a newly discovered protease activity for insects.Trypsin, elastase and proteinase Tc have molecular weights of 24,300, 19,500 and 23,600, respectively; show alkaline pH optima and chemical inhibition indicative of serine endopeptidases; and interact most strongly with their characteristic class of proteinaceous inhibitors. Elastase and proteinase Tc are inhibited by a very similar spectrum of specific inhibitors, but the latter lacks activity against all specific synthetic substrates tested. Leucine aminopeptidase and carboxypeptidase A have molecular weights of 94,000 and 39,700, respectively, and show optimum activity at pH 8 and pH 9, respectively. The equilibrium dissociation constants for trypsin, elastase and proteinase Tc with 25 serine proteinase inhibitors were measured. Values spanning a 1000-fold range were obtained in each case.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. When injected into the haemolymph of newly emerged adult males of the field cricket, Teleogryllus commodus (Walker), [3H]arachidonic acid is incorporated into tissue phospholipids. Two reproductive tissues, testes and accessory glands, incorporate and preserve the labelled arachidonic acid for at least 49 days. With onset of circadian rhythm-controlled spermatophore production, radioactive arachidonic acid is incorporated into spermatophore phospholipids. After mating with untreated females, radioactivity was detected in spermathecae and in haemolymph from females. Some of the transferred radioactive arachidonic acid is subsequently converted into prostaglandins. Hence, males of T. commodus transfer prostaglandin synthetase activity and substrate by way of spermatophores during mating  相似文献

A functioning immune system is crucial for protection against disease and illness, yet increasing evidence suggests that species living in urban areas could be suffering from immune suppression, due to the presence of artificial light at night (ALAN). This study examined the effects of ecologically relevant levels of ALAN on three key measures of immune function (haemocyte concentration, lytic activity, and phenoloxidase activity) using a model invertebrate species, the Australian black field cricket, Teleogryllus commodus. We reared crickets under an ecologically relevant daily light‐cycle consisting of 12 hr bright daylight (2600 lx) followed by either 12 h darkness (0 lx) or dim environmentally relevant ALAN (1, 10, 100 lx), and then assessed immune function at multiple time points throughout adult life using haemolymph samples. We found that the presence of ALAN had a clear negative effect on haemocytes, while the effects on lytic activity and phenoloxidase activity were more complex or largely unaffected by ALAN. Furthermore, the effects of lifelong exposure to ALAN of 1 lx were comparable to those of 10 and 100 lx. Our data suggest that the effects of ALAN could be large and widespread, and such reductions in the core immune response of individuals will likely have greater consequences for fitness and survival under more malign conditions, such as those of the natural environment.  相似文献

In quantitative genetics, there are two basic "conflicting" observations: abundant polygenic variation and strong stabilizing selection that should rapidly deplete that variation. This conflict, although having attracted much theoretical attention, still stands open. Two classes of model have been proposed: real stabilizing selection directly on the metric trait under study and apparent stabilizing selection caused solely by the deleterious pleiotropic side effects of mutations on fitness. Here these models are combined and the total stabilizing selection observed is assumed to derive simultaneously through these two different mechanisms. Mutations have effects on a metric trait and on fitness, and both effects vary continuously. The genetic variance (V(G)) and the observed strength of total stabilizing selection (V(s,t)) are analyzed with a rare-alleles model. Both kinds of selection reduce V(G) but their roles in depleting it are not independent: The magnitude of pleiotropic selection depends on real stabilizing selection and such dependence is subject to the shape of the distributions of mutational effects. The genetic variation maintained thus depends on the kurtosis as well as the variance of mutational effects: All else being equal, V(G) increases with increasing leptokurtosis of mutational effects on fitness, while for a given distribution of mutational effects on fitness, V(G) decreases with increasing leptokurtosis of mutational effects on the trait. The V(G) and V(s,t) are determined primarily by real stabilizing selection while pleiotropic effects, which can be large, have only a limited impact. This finding provides some promise that a high heritability can be explained under strong total stabilizing selection for what are regarded as typical values of mutation and selection parameters.  相似文献
